Margaret Noodin was initially found to violate UWM’s code of conduct for reportedly faking having Indigenous ancestry, but was cleared after a review conducted by one of her supporters.

One of her former colleagues described her as a ‘con artist’ and expressed disappointment for having worked with her.

A professor who allegedly faked having Native American ancestry was recently cleared of accusations, despite facing widespread criticism.

Margaret Noodin, professor of English and American Indian studies at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee (UWM), was recently cleared of allegations that she had falsely claimed to have Indigenous ancestry.

Noodin, who used to direct the school’s Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education, was previously found guilty of violating the school’s code of conduct for making apparently erroneous claims about her ancestry.

Following allegations surrounding the veracity of her identity claims, Noodin released a “positionality statement” in 2022 in whichshe stated that “I am not, and have not claimed to be, an enrolled citizen of a tribal nation. Like many Americans, my understanding of my own race and ethnicity has evolved over time and there are many ancestors I look forward to meeting when I leave this world.”

Doug Kiel, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and a curator at the Chicago Field Museum, which featured Noodin’s art as part of an Indigenous art exhibit,expressed frustration with Noodin’s conduct.

Referencing her “positionality statement,” he said: “It’s really quite rambling babble about, ‘I know a person and I was in a ceremony,’ and it’s like, ‘No, no, no, no. This is not how this works at all.’”

Kiel also wrote directly to Noodin, telling her: “No matter how you slice it, you have made very big, inexcusable mistakes that legitimately call into question whether you can be trusted to work with Native people and communities.”

“You have years of amends to start making,” he wrote.

Howard Kimewon, who worked together with Noodin in the past on research related to the Ojibwe language, described her as a “con artist,” expressing disappointment in relation to their previous collaborations.

“She did enough damage to me. I can’t forget it,” he said.

UWM agreed to re-open Noodin’s case after she requested an additional review. The school appointed Mark Freeland – one of Noodin’s most vocal supporters – to lead the review. Freeland is also allegedly a friend of Noodin’s.

Freeland cleared Noodin of the charges, an assessment that the university accepted but that faced opposition from others.

One student who had enrolled in some of Noodin’s courses told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “It is interesting that the university had her hand-picked successor be the so-called expert on Indigenous identity. [Noodin and Freeland] are personal friends and knew each other prior to his hiring—talk about a conflict of interest.”

Noodin told Campus Reform: “I believe in putting students first and am eager to get back to teaching this fall. I understand that I am a public servant and can be investigated and held accountable for following all policies and guidelines. It is my hope that I will be allowed to maintain my personal beliefs about who I am as taught to me by members of my family and community.”

“However, I also believe there is no need to make discussion of myself part of my role at the university. I think it is important that I create neutral and safe spaces in my classes so that all students can seek an education free of any bias as they each form their own character and find their future,” she added.

The U.S. intelligence community recently reaffirmed its conclusion that senior officials in Russia were behind hacks during the 2016 presidential campaign into the Democratic National Committee and emails belonging to associates of Hillary Clinton.

But what exactly is the “intelligence community?” It’s not just an amorphous term for all U.S. intelligence officials. It’s a veritable alphabet soup of 17 agencies and offices. The group includes agencies strictly focused on intelligence as well as the intelligence arms of other government agencies and of the military. Its total budget in 2015 was $66.8 billion.

Here are the 17 offices:

1. Office of the Director of National Intelligence

Created by Congress in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the office coordinates intelligence collection and sharing among U.S. intelligence agencies. The director is the head of the intelligence community and the principal advisor to the president, National Security Council and Homeland Security Council on intelligence matters related to national security.

2.Central Intelligence Agency

The CIA is the most recognized intelligence agency, known for spying on foreign governments and conducting covert operations, including funneling money to opposition groups in other countries to sway elections or oust certain foreign leaders.

3. National Security Agency

Once so secret it was referred to as “No Such Agency,” the NSA is the largest and perhaps most technologically sophisticated of all the intelligence agencies. It focuses on signals intelligence — monitoring, collecting and processing communications and other electronic information — and cracking secret codes. It also protects U.S. information systems from outside penetration. The NSA oversees PRISM and other mass surveillance programs revealed by Edward Snowden in 2013. It is believed to employ more mathematicians than any other organization in the country — a fact not all math whizzes are happy about.

In fact, 2020 is the first milestone envisioned by World One. That’s when the quality of life is supposed to drop dramatically. The broadcaster presented this scenario and how it would lead to the demise of large numbers of people:

“At around 2020, the condition of the planet becomes highly critical. If we do nothing about it, the quality of life goes down to zero. Pollution becomes so seriously it will start to kill people, which in turn will cause the population to diminish, lower than it was in the 1900. At this stage, around 2040 to 2050, civilised life as we know it on this planet will cease to exist.”

Alexander King, the then-leader of the Club of Rome, evaluated the program’s results to also mean that nation-states will lose their sovereignty, forecasting a New World Order with corporations managing everything.

4. Defense Intelligence Agency

The Pentagon’s top spy agency, the DIA is the primary entity responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence on foreign militaries, with support from the intelligence offices of all the military branches. 6. Department of State – Bureau of Intelligence and Research

This bureau collects and analyzes intelligence on global affairs and advises the secretary of State and other diplomats. It conducts foreign opinion polls and tracks and analyzes issues that may undermine U.S. foreign policy objectives, such as weapons proliferation, human trafficking and drug smuggling. Though it’s one of the smallest intelligence agencies, its assessment on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was not as inaccurate as that of other agencies.

7. Department of Homeland Security – Office of Intelligence and Analysis

The scope of “homeland security” includes emergency preparedness, border control, transportation security and biodefense (Ebola and SARS, for example), among other issues. The Office of Intelligence and Analysis is charged with gathering intelligence in these areas and sharing it with state, local, tribal, territorial and private sector partners through a network of “fusion centers.”

8. Drug Enforcement Administration – Office of National Security Intelligence

The DEA is the government’s watch guard for drugs that are illegally manufactured, distributed or dispensed. It is also responsible for the seizure and forfeiture of assets connected with illicit drug trafficking. The Office of National Security Intelligence assists law enforcement with investigations and prosecutions. Most recently it has focused on the threat posed by a surge in heroin and counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl.

9. Department of the Treasury – Office of Intelligence and Analysis

Intelligence gathering at the Treasury dates back to its beginning, when Secretary Alexander Hamilton sent a tax official in disguise to investigate the “whiskey rebellion” underway in western Pennsylvania. Today the Office of Intelligence and Analysis sits within the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, which works to prevent sanctioned countries, money launderers, terrorists, drug kingpins and purveyors of weapons of mass destruction from parking or moving their money through the U.S. financial system.

10. Department of Energy – Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence

Even the Department of Energy has an intelligence office. It traces its origin to the Manhattan Project, when the Atomic Energy Commission was charged with analyzing the Soviet Union’s atomic weapons program. Today the office’s role is to provide technical intelligence on foreign nuclear weapons, energy security, science and technology, and nuclear energy, safety and waste.

11. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency

Supporting the Defense Department, this agency is the principal provider of geospatial intelligence – analysis and information about Earth’s natural and man-made features and geo-tagged activities. This “GEOINT” is used for combat, humanitarian and disaster relief, border and transportation security and security planning for special events. One of the agency’s claims to fame is pinpointing the Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound where Osama bin Laden was hiding; another is operating the reference system for GPS.

12. National Reconnaissance Office

The NRO was a secret agency for 31 years, until its existence was declassified in 1992. The office designs, builds and operates the nation’s reconnaissance satellites, providing the Pentagon, CIA and others precision navigation, early warning of missile launches and near real-time imagery to support anti-terrorism activities. On the civilian side, the satellites help survey damage from natural disasters and support environmental research.

13. Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance

The Air Force’s intelligence branch, organized into the 25th Air Force, uses airplanes, drones and satellites to identify hideouts, bunkers, mobile launchers and weapons caches. It is also responsible for code-breaking activities within the Air Force. All that surveillance takes up a lot of digital space – in 2013, one wing alone received 20 terabytes of data daily, processed 460,000 hours of video and disseminated 2.6 million images.

14. Army Military Intelligence

The Army’s intelligence branch intercepts electronic communications and provides maps, ground imagery and information on foreign forces to assist fighters in the battlefield.

15. Office of Naval Intelligence

The Navy’s intelligence branch keeps tabs on foreign scientific and technological research, analyzes the structure, tactics and readiness of foreign naval forces, and tracks merchant shipping to identify illicit activity.

16. Marine Corps Intelligence

The Marine Corps’ intelligence officers create military maps, intercept and translate radio and electronic signals, analyze images collected from sensors and carry out counterintelligence.

17. Coast Guard Intelligence

The Coast Guard, part of the military and the Department of Homeland Security, protects and defends more than 100,000 miles of coastline and inland waterways. On an average day, the Coast Guard conducts 45 search-and-rescue cases, seizes 874 pounds of cocaine, interdicts 17 migrants and helps move $8.7 billion worth of goods, according to its website. Its intelligence office helps with criminal investigations and provides other national agencies with intelligence from domestic and foreign ports, coastal waters and offshore.

Japan's space agency ends Moon probe operation

Japan's space agency said on Monday it had ended its Moon lander operation after losing communication with the uncrewed spaceship last week.

The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), dubbed the "Moon Sniper" for its landing precision, touched down eight months ago—making Japan only the fifth nation to achieve a soft lunar landing.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) wrote on X there was no response from the SLIM after trying to communicate last week following three frigid lunar nights or six cold weeks.

"We judged that there was no prospect of restoring communication with SLIM, and at around 22:40 (1340 GMT) on August 23, we sent a command to stop the SLIM activity," JAXA said, nearly a year after launching the operation.

"SLIM continued to transmit information on its status and the surrounding environment for a much longer period than expected."

"At the time of launch, no one imagined that the operation would continue this long," it said.

The touchdown of the unmanned lander in January was a success, but it landed at a wonky angle that left its solar panels facing the wrong way.

As the sun's angle shifted, it came back to life for two days and carried out scientific observations of a crater with a high-spec camera.

The SLIM was not designed for the freezing, two-week-long lunar nights, when the temperature plunges to minus 133 degrees, but it worked up for a third time in April.

The spacecraft carried two probes, one with a transmitter and a mini-rover that moves like a turtle around the lunar surface beaming images back to Earth.

The SLIM's mission aims to examine a part of the Moon's mantle—the usually deep inner layer beneath its crust—believed to be accessible at the crater where it landed.

You are correct. The Greek word pharmakeia is used in Galatians 5:19.

However, if you were told that this word means “the use of or the

administrating of drugs” then you were misinformed. The word is a fairly

general one. My Greek dictionary defines it as: “witchcraft, magic, the

use of spells and potions of magic, often involving drugs–a magic

spell. It is a fact that witchcraft and magic in the Greek world often

involved the use of drugs–either by the witch or the one on whom the

magic is worked. I have heard the same thing taught that you quote. It

is not absolutely false, but it is not good use of the Greek. Probably,

whoever gave you this bogus definition also told you that we get the word

pharmacy from this Greek root word. That, of course, is true, but this

does not mean that the meaning of the word has not changed! Put it this

way, if one were to use and administer drugs for the sole purpose of

creating a mind-altered state, then one could probably be judged to have

violated the commandment not to be involved in pharmakiea. Probably

whoever told you this got the definition second hand and did not bother to

Rare Milky Way star cluster is packed with red supergiants 1 million times brighter than the sun

In the past, map makers often placed monsters on their maps to mark unexplored regions and potentially dangerous regions.

A famous example is the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' map, created in 1570, which features sea serpents and other sea monsters.

Fast forward to today , and an unexplored Milky Way star cluster suggests that astronomers should adopt this tradition, too.

The cluster is known as Barbá 2 and is found just 24,000 light-years or so away from Earth.

An investigation using the star-surveying Gaia space telescope revealed that the Barbá 2 is packed with red supergiant stars, stars that can be hundreds of times wider than the sun and up to 1,000,000 times as luminous as the sun.

"There are many open clusters in the galaxy.

However, not all open clusters have the same level of interest to astronomers," Ignacio Negueruela, a researcher at the Universidad de Alicante who was part of the team behind the discovery of supergiants in Barbá 2, told Space.com.

"Clusters rich in red supergiants are very rare and tend to be very far away, but they play a crucial role in understanding key aspects in the evolution of massive stars."

The intimidating size and power of supergiants means these monster stars burn through their nuclear fuel much faster than stars like the sun.

Whereas our star will exist in its main sequence lifetime for around 10 billion years, supergiants are estimated to last just a few million years.

The short lifetime of supergiants means that while open clusters like Barbá 2 are common, with over 1,100 already discovered in the Milky Way alone, finding one packed with red supergiants is extremely rare.

Negueruela added that the study of open clusters like Barbá 2 that are rich in monster-sized stars could be important in discovering how they become red supergiants or fail to do so and how this influences their ultimate fate.

"In the Milky Way, there are only a handful of clusters rich in red supergiants," he said. "Finding a cluster like Barbá 2, which can be observed with a mid-sized telescope, is a significant and exciting discovery for astronomers.

Being so far away and affected by moderate extinction, the cluster does not look like much in optical images."

Barbá 2 was actually discovered around a decade ago by astronomer Rodolfo Barbá, but after he passed away in 2021, the discovery has not been published until now.

Hence, it is only fitting the cluster that now carries his name. "Rodolfo was well-known among his peers for being slow to publish.

He made many significant discoveries that he shared at meetings or discussed with colleagues but often didn’t get around to publishing," Negueruela said.

"After Rodolfo passed away, his close collaborator Jesús Maíz took on the task of ensuring that his work would be published."

Nothing lasts forever, and that's certainly true even for the most monstrous of stars, but just as is the case with distinguished scientists like Barbá, what is left behind is of vital importance.

Though stellar bodies of all sizes have lifetimes that make ours look truly insignificant in terms of duration, these stellar lives still grind to a halt when stars exhaust the fuel for nuclear fusion in their cores.

The life of any star is a delicate balancing act between the outward force of radiation pressure generated by nuclear fusion in its cores and the inward push of its own gravity.

Whether this battle rages for millions or billions of years, gravity inevitably wins, but the outcomes of this victory vary.

For instance, stars with sizes similar to the sun give up their war with gravity when they exhaust the supplies of hydrogen in their cores and can't continue to convert it to helium.

The gravitational collapse of these smaller-sized stars creates a stellar remnant called a white dwarf, which is prevented from further collapse by a quantum phenomenon called "electron degeneracy pressure," which essentially stops electrons from all occupying the same state.

If a star begins this process while at least eight times the mass of the sun and can hang on to at least 1.44 times of the sun's mass during its initial collapse (the so-called Chandrasekhar limit), when it collapses it can generate enough pressure in its core to fuse helium to heavier elements, giving the star a new bout of life.
