Pavel Durov: Russia calls Telegram founder a 'political prisoner' after arrest in France

Telegram founder Pavel Durov is a "political prisoner" after his arrest in France, a Russian official has said. The 39-year-old Russian-born billionaire behind the encrypted messaging app was detained after his private jet landed at Le Bourget airport on the outskirts of Paris on Saturday. It is unclear what Mr Durov was arrested for but BFMTV reported the warrant concerned a lack of moderators on Telegram and potential criminal activity, including the app's possible use in money laundering, drug trafficking or sharing of child sex abuse content. Russian lawmakers have condemned his arrest, with Maria Butina - who spent 15 months in a US prison for acting as an unregistered Russian agent - accusing Europe of trying to seize control of Telegram. "Pavel Durov is a political prisoner - a victim of a witch-hunt by the West," she said. "The arrest of Pavel Durov means there is no freedom of speech - it means that freedom of speech in Europe is dead. "Now basically they have a hostage and they will try to blackmail Russia, they will try to blackmail all the users of Telegram and not only try to get control but also try to block the network here in Russia."

Mr Durov left Russia in 2014 after losing control of his previous social media company Vkontakte (VK). He refused to comply with government demands to shut down opposition groups on the platform and would not hand over data on Ukrainian protesters to security agencies. He moved to Dubai in 2017 and became a French citizen in August 2021. The Russian embassy in France has also called for consular access to Mr Durov and demanded his rights be ensured, according to Russian state news agency TASS. France has so far "avoided engagement" on the situation with Durov and Russian diplomats are in contact with his lawyer, the embassy said.

Local reports suggest Mr Durov could face an indictment on Sunday. The French interior ministry, police and Paris prosecutor's office had no comment on his arrest. Telegram is one of the most downloaded apps in the world, with close to one billion users. It offers end-to-end encryption - effectively protecting data from being intercepted - and has a strong focus on privacy.

Then, when a predictably awful debate performance precipitated a palace coup against President Biden, the same shadowy DNC operatives appointed his successor, also without an election. They installed a candidate who was so unpopular with voters that she dropped out in 2020 without winning a single delegate.

Everything Kennedy says in that searing assessment is true.= He is also right that the media, once thought to hold power to account, have become creatures of the ruling consensus, “stenographers for the organs of power.”

Kennedy noted that he and Trump were not in agreement on every issue. But, he said, they were at one about several important policies, including “ending the Forever Wars, ending the childhood disease epidemics, securing the border, protecting freedom of speech, unraveling the corporate capture of our regulatory agencies, and getting the U.S. intelligence agencies out of the business of propagandizing, censoring, and surveilling Americans, as well as interfering in our elections.” That’s a good bit to be getting on with.

Kennedy’s indictment of his former party=, along with his endorsement of Donald Trump, ==has sent shock waves through the chambers of the self-appointed elite who would rule us.

The timing of Kennedy’s announcement—he spoke mere hours after Kamala’s acceptance speech—could not have been more deadly. Tony Fabrizio,Trump’s chief pollster, noted later on Friday that in every battleground state, Kennedy’s endorsement shifted votes to Trump. For example, “the net vote gained in a state like Arizona based on just a 2020 turnout model would be over 41,000 votes, nearly 4 times Biden’s winning margin.”

Republican pollster Frank Luntz signaled that independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s backing of former President Trump could help him win battleground states in 2024.

Luntz said that while Kennedy’s poll numbers have dropped since Vice President Harris ascended to the top of the Democratic Party presidential ticket, his remaining supporters could provide enough backing to tip some swing-state results in Trump’s favor.

“It’s probably worth about 1 percent for Trump and that 1 percent could be everything if it’s in the swing states,” Luntz said during his Friday appearance on NewsNation’s “On Balance” with Leland Vittert.

“In the end, the reason why Kennedy was drawing 10, 12, even as high as 14 percent is because he was taking votes away from Joe Biden,” he continued. “Joe Biden’s gone. Kamala Harris has replaced him, and [Kennedy’s] vote collapsed down to about 4 or 5 percent and what’s left is a Trump vote.”

“Some of them are simply not going to participate in November, roughly two to one, the ones who are remaining will vote for Trump over Harris, and that’s worth a single percent, and a single percent can make the difference in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.”

A poll from Cook Political Report Swing State Project released in mid-August found that Harris was leading or was tied with Trump in six of the seven swing-states. The survey found that she had a 1-point lead over Trump in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Kennedy, who began his White House run as a Democrat, switched his affiliation to run as an independent in October. He garnered double-digit support in the polls. Recently, those numbers dipped to single digits. On Friday, he announced a suspension of his campaign and that he would endorse Trump. He said he would remove his name from ballots in battleground states to avoid being a spoiler, but would still be on the ballot in the majority of red and blue states.

Luntz also dinged the media, saying that Kennedy would have been portrayed differently had he endorsed Harris, not Trump.

“If he had endorsed Harris, I do think he would be regarded as a hero but because he endorsed Trump, the people who are communicating that are not giving him the credit that he deserves, and I think we have to be careful in the last 73 days of this election campaign to understand the motivations of the people providing us information like what I’m doing right now, because I am dedicated to getting this election correct,” he said.

The pollster argued later that if Trump would campaign on issues like immigration and inflation, he would have an advantage, but if the 2024 election is about character traits, the vice president has the upper hand.

“If it is about attributes, if he continues to attack Harris and the way that he is done, and he gets away from inflation, which is really affordability, stops talking about paycheck-to-paycheck voters, which is better than working class or middle class, the language does matter here, if he does that, he is in the driver’s seat.”

Harris Nabs CIA Endorsement as Democrats Promise More War, Foreign Intervention

A former chief of the controversial intelligence agency voiced his support for the vice president at the Democratic National Convention Thursday.

US Vice President Kamala Harris signaled she would continue her predecessor’s hawkish foreign policy in Gaza and Ukraine Thursday as an ex-CIA director publicly endorsed the Democratic presidential candidate.

“As president I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies,” Harris declared during her acceptance speech, voicing strong support for Kiev’s US-backed proxy war against Russia.

Former intelligence chief Leon Panetta also delivered a speech praising Harris during which the controversial figure claimed he was “proud” to have served in the US Army and as CIA director. US military aggression throughout the Middle East during the so-called “War on Terror” is estimated to have caused the deaths of at least 4.5 million people while the CIA has been implicated in numerous human rights violations.

“The Democrats really showed that this is a hawkish party and really neoconservatives are in charge of the party,” noted CovertAction Magazine managing editor Jeremy Kuzmarov on Sputnik’s The Final Countdown program. “I mean, they brought out Leon Panetta earlier tonight. He's a former CIA director who was a key mastermind of the drone war and a key figure behind Russiagate and a key supporter of Hillary Clinton and chief of staff in the Bill Clinton White House.”

“In her speech [Harris] was talking about how [former US President Donald] Trump supposedly coddled [foreign leaders] like Putin, and that's totally false,” he continued. “Trump had a pretty hardline policy toward Russia. In June, it was revealed that Western military-grade weapons supplied to Ukraine have been sold on the black market, ending up in the hands of terrorists and European drug cartels.

Various neoconservative figures such as Iraq War architect Bill Kristol have shifted allegiances to the Democratic Party in recent years as Republicans have become increasingly critical of foreign intervention under the banner of Trump’s “America First” ethos. Recent polling shows increasing numbers of Americans believe the US has spent too much money funding Ukraine’s quixotic proxy war on Russia.

Netanyahu Vows More 'Surprising Blows' After Preemptive Hezbollah Attack: "Not The End"

"What happened today is not the end of the story," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement posted on X. Early morning 'preemptive' strikes included over 100 Israeli fighter jets simultaneously attacking thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers and drone sites across southern Lebanon.

"We are hitting Hezbollah with surprising blows. Three weeks ago we eliminated their chief of staff and today we thwarted their attack," Netanyahu said further.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later said Hezbollah had launched 210 rockets and some 20 drones on northern and central Israel.

In follow-up IDF Spokesman Rear Adm Daniel Hagari announced that at least six Hezbollah operatives were killed in Sunday's major preemptive operation. This brings the tally to 30 Hezbollah operatives killed in just the last week.

Hagari declared Sunday's operation to be a success: "Contrary to Hezbollah’s claims, there were no impacts in IDF bases, not in the north and not in the center [of the country]," he said, rejecting claims made by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Interestingly, Israel has disclosed that it gave Washington a warning ahead of the major escalation. The Times of Israel details:

Israel gave the Americans "considerable" advance notice of its pre-dawn preemptive strike on Hezbollah’s rocket and missile launchers, Channel 2 news reports.

It says the US administration gave its backing to the attack, but warned both before and after it took place that Israel should be careful to avoid escalating the conflict toward all-out war.

The TV report said the message from the US was conveyed in several interactions with Jerusalem and broadly stated: "We support the operation to avert the specific threat, but be careful in your actions; don’t do anything that is likely to lead to a regional war."

So far, there doesn't appear to be runaway escalation as a result of Sunday's exchange of fresh fire

Who is Kamala Harris? (What is Kamala Harris?)

What does she believe?

It’s hard to know.

She won’t take questions from reporters.

Instead, she reads from a teleprompter and gives the same speech again and again.

So, now that she has the nomination, let’s look at who Harris really is.

She’s eager to spend other people’s money.

As the Biden administration spent America further into debt, Vice President Harris cast tiebreaking votes to spend more.

Last election, my team compared the candidates’ proposed spending.

We were surprised that the biggest spending plans came from Harris.

Trump proposed spending $267 billion more. Biden, $297 billion.

The socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders wanted to spend an astonishing $3.976 trillion.

But Harris was even worse! $4.162 trillion in new spending.

Biden’s big spending ignited nasty inflation.

Imagine how much prices would have increased had Democrats selected Harris back then.

Last week, in her first policy speech, she proposed $1.7 trillion in new spending.

At least that’s not as bad as what she wanted during COVID: She thought government should give every American $2,000 a month.

That would have cost taxpayers $21 trillion!

Her love for big government dominates her thinking.

A few years ago, she endorsed eliminating private health insurance — having government take it over completely.

Now her campaign says she “no longer supports [entirely government-run] health care.”

Who is the real Kamala Harris?

In 2019, she said she wanted to ban fracking.

Now that Harris needs votes in Pennsylvania, where fracking provides jobs, her campaign claims she won’t ban fracking, and Republican claims that she would are “false . . . an obvious attempt to distract.”

But what’s false?

She told CNN, “I’m in favor of banning fracking.”

She also wanted to force gun owners to sell their guns to the government.

Now, a Harris spokesperson says, “The vice president would no longer require this.”

She used to brag about being a tough prosecutor, even taking pride in “prosecuting parents for truancy.”

But then, when progressives criticized harsh policing, she flip-flopped.

During the George Floyd riots, as people looted and set fires, Harris tweeted, “help post bail for those protesting.”

Now the policing pendulum has swung back. Harris again brags about locking people up.

During a Democratic presidential debate in 2019, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard pointed out her hypocrisy: “She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

Harris had no answer.

Shortly after that, she dropped out of the presidential race.

Today, legacy media protect Harris, because they hate Trump so much.

For years, the supposedly “non-partisan” website GovTrack ranked senators on a liberal/conservative scale.

They labeled Harris the most liberal.

But once it looked like Harris would be the nominee, GovTrack deleted their page.

They suddenly decided they didn’t have sufficient data “to create a reliable portrait of the activity of legislators.”

Harris needs this media cover, because she says radical things, like wanting “equity” over equality and equal opportunity.

“There’s a big difference,” she says in an animated video.

“Equality suggests everyone should get the same amount. Equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place.”

Everyone must end up at the same place?

So, we need even more government redistribution?

Harris is a big-government, flip-flopping opportunist.

It’s upsetting that the main presidential contenders are a cackling, economically ignorant big spender and a crass, self-absorbed bully.

Even Trump supporter Ann Coulter calls him an “awful, awful man.”

Although most of his policies would be better than hers . . .

The best news is that America’s founders wisely created checks on executive power.

Foolish people often say the president “runs the country.”

Thankfully, that’s not true.

We the people run the country.

The president runs only one of three branches of government.

Each is designed to be able to stop the other from imposing tyranny.

The founders wanted limited government because they’d seen the damage oppressive rulers did.

If our next president must be Trump or Harris, I’m sure glad there are limits on their power.

Trump Special Counsel Opts Against Mini-Trial Before Election

(Bloomberg) – Special Counsel Jack Smith has decided against seeking a major hearing to present evidence in the election-interference case against Donald Trump before voters go to the polls Nov. 5, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move means that it’s unlikely a so-called mini-trial, which would include evidence and testimony from possible blockbuster witnesses like former Vice President Mike Pence, would take place before the presidential election.

Such a hearing would have been the best chance for voters to review evidence about Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election result as he campaigns to regain the White House.

The decision is a win for Trump and his lawyers, who have fought efforts to reveal the substance of allegations against the former president. If Trump wins the election, the case would collapse as the Justice Department has a policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. Trump could also order the department to throw it out.

Instead, Smith and his team are carefully revising the case against Trump, according to the people familiar, who asked not to be named discussing a confidential matter. The case has no chance of going to a jury trial before the election as a result of delays stemming from the Supreme Court’s ruling last month that he has some presidential immunity from criminal charges. If Democratic nominee Kamala Harris wins the election, Smith could still proceed with prosecuting Trump.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung didn’t comment on Smith’s plan. He said Trump’s team will continue to fight the cases against him, calling them “witch hunts” that should be dismissed in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The special counsel’s office declined to comment. Trump’s lawyers didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Landmark Ruling

The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling held that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution over conduct related to their official duties, but not for private acts. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, who is overseeing the case, had been expected to hold hearings before the fall to examine which alleged conduct are official acts that can’t be prosecuted and which are private acts that can still be charged following the high court’s ruling.
