A peculiar and frustrating aspect of our current political moment is that, while the public is perhaps more informed than ever regarding the corrupt behavior of the ruling class, there is rarely anything that can be done about such behavior. All of this is to say that we must enthusiastically take note of and celebrate the rare occasions on which elements of our corrupt regime actually suffer accountability. As it so happens, one of the most notorious censorship think tanks, the Stanford Internet Observatory, is shutting down in the aftermath of months of devastating exposés detailing the organization’s collusion with the federal government to illegally censor First Amendment-protected speech.

The Stanford Internet Observatory, which published some of the most influential analysis of the spread of false information on social media during elections, has shed most of its staff and may shut down amid political and legal attacks that have cast a pall on efforts to study online misinformation.

Just three staffers remain at the Observatory, and they will either leave or find roles at Stanford’s Cyber Policy Center, which is absorbing what remains of the program, according to eight people familiar with the developments, some of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.

The Election Integrity Partnership, a prominent consortium run by the Observatory and a University of Washington team to identify viral falsehoods about election procedures and outcomes in real time, has updated its webpage to say its work has concluded.

The Stanford Cyber Policy Center has attempted to minimize the public disgrace, assuring the public that the Stanford Internet Observatory has not shut down but merely “faces funding issues.” Nice try, but there’s simply no way to sugar-coat the fact that the Observatory is in shambles after the departure of two of its most disgraced operatives, Alex Stamos and Renee DiResta, both of whom the Washington Post piece makes clear have been buried in lawsuits for their nefarious and potentially illegal censorship activity during their tenure at the Observatory.

For those who need a little refresher, one of the dirty little secrets that came to light over the past year is the extent to which the censorship industry was not simply propelled by censorious left-wing radicals within the private sector tech companies, though that of course was part of the story. At times, the government also tried its hand directly in the censorship business, the most notorious example of which must be the Department of Homeland Security’s ill-fated Disinformation Governance Board led by disgraced Nina Jankowicz.

There has been a great deal of (seemingly warranted) scrutiny directed at Texas Children's Hospital since reports emerged two weeks ago of the Department of Justice going after whistleblower Dr. Ethan Haim, a resident at Baylor College of Medicine, on charges of improperly accessing and disclosing patient information in violation of HIPAA.

In 2023, Haim told journalist Christopher Rufo that the hospital was continuing to perform "gender-affirming" surgeries on minors — a practice that was outlawed by Texas Lawmakers in September 2023.

The uproar over Haim's targeting was followed by reports of a visit from FBI agents to a nurse from the hospital who claimed that doctors in the hospital's child sex-change program had committed Medicaid fraud.

On Thursday afternoon, Rufo shared to his X account reports that the hospital has temporarily closed its pediatric sex-change clinic.

This follows reports that the office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is opening an investigation into the allegations of Medicaid Fraud. Additionally, Texas State Representative Brian Harrison (R) has called for the Texas House to hold hearings and investigate federal officials and hospital leadership over the matter.

The US has permitted Ukraine to strike targets on Russian territory using American-made weapons anywhere across the front line – not just in the Kharkov Region, Politico has reported.

This doesn’t represent a change to Washington’s policy on the use of US-supplied weapons by Kiev, anonymous sources told the outlet in an article published on Thursday.

In late May, media reported that the administration of President Joe Biden had quietly greenlighted Ukrainian attacks using American weapons inside Russian territory for “counterfire purposes in the Kharkov region.” The ban on long-range strikes deep inside Russia remained unchanged, according to the reports.

In an interview with ABC News earlier this month, Biden clarified that Ukraine could use US-made arms “only in proximity to the border [with Russia] when [Russian weapons] are being used on the other side of the border to attack specific targets in Ukraine.” Washington is “not authorizing strikes 200 miles into Russia and we’re not authorizing strikes on Moscow, on the Kremlin,” he clarified.

Officials who talked to Politico confirmed the statement made by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan earlier this week, in which he said Kiev’s ability to fire US-supplied weapons wasn’t limited to Kharkov Region.

“It extends to anywhere that Russian forces are coming across the border from the Russian side to the Ukrainian side to try to take additional Ukrainian territory,” Sullivan said in an interview with PBS on Tuesday.

Russian forces are now advancing in Kharkov Region, but if they move across the border in some other area, “it would apply there as well,” Sullivan explained. “This is not about geography. It’s about common sense. If Russia is attacking or about to attack from its territory into Ukraine, it only makes sense to allow Ukraine to hit back against the forces that are hitting it from across the border.”

Russia has repeatedly warned against the use of weapons supplied to Kiev by the US and their allies to strike deep inside its territory, arguing that such attacks would amount to direct Western participation in the conflict, as the Ukrainian military is unable to fire foreign long-range systems without assistance from NATO states.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday thatMoscow would not rule out supplying weapons to other countries, including North Korea, in response to the West providing long-range systems to Ukraine.

It’s an election year. Donald Trump and other Republican Party leaders have refused to commit to accepting November’s results. Trump has referred to those who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 as “warriors.”

There is growing concern that this year’s elections could lead to — or even be decided by — political violence. My colleagues and I treat violence, including political violence, as a health problem. That’s not a conceptual stretch. Political violence on a large scale could kill and injure thousands of people and have a broad array of adverse effects on American society that would persist for generations.

The best approach to intervening in such problems starts with getting into the field and understanding them better. Beginning in 2022, our group has conducted a large, annual, nationally representative longitudinal survey of Americans’ support for and personal willingness to engage in political violence.

Many of our findings are deeply concerning. In 2022, nearly one-third of participants (32.8 percent) considered violence to be usually or always justified to advance at least one political objective. Some groups were much more likely than others to endorse political violence: Republicans and MAGA-supporting Republicans in particular;those who endorse QAnon, the white supremacy movement, Christian nationalists and other extreme right-wing organizations and movements; and firearm owners — but only by a small margin, unless they owned assault-type rifles, had bought firearms during the COVID pandemic or regularly carried loaded firearms in public.

With 2023’s results, the list grew to include racists, sexists, xenophobes, homophobes, transphobes Islamophobes and antisemites.

In most cases, participants who were more supportive of political violence were also more willing to commit it themselves. Here’s just one example: 8.8 percent of firearm owners who regularly carried loaded firearms in public, but only 0.5 percent of owners who never carried, thought it very likely or extremely likely that, at some time in the future, they would shoot someone to advance a political objective.

Doorbell camera footage showed the Boeing 737 MAX-8 then hovering above houses, before it flies out of frame. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident and SouthWest has confirmed they are working with them to address any 'irregularities'.

A resident was startled awake by the plane's engine and wondered if the aircraft was set for a collision. 'It woke me up and I thought it was gonna hit my house,' the resident wrote on the Yukon Happenings Facebook page, according to The Oklahoman.
