US soldier sentenced to nearly 4 years in Russian penal colony for theft

A U.S. Army spokesperson said Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was not authorized to travel to Russia when he was taken into custody.

A Russian court has sentenced a United States soldier to nearly four years in a penal colony after he was convicted of theft.

Army Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was arrested in the eastern city of Vladivostok, Russia, early last month and was charged with theft after allegedly stealing about $100 from a woman he was visiting. Black reportedly said he needed the money to pay for food and a hotel, but paid her back the next day.

Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith informed Scripps News that Black was most recently stationed in South Korea and was scheduled to return home to Cavazos, Texas, while on permanent change-of-station leave. However, instead of returning to the U.S., Smith said Black traveled through China into Russia for "personal reasons."

Smith added that Black did not receive permission from the military to go to China or Russia and that travel to both countries is currently restricted under the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide. Smith said the Army notified Black's family of his arrest shortly after Russian officials informed the U.S. embassy in Moscow.

Dem-majority FCC helping George Soros fast-track takeover of nationwide radio network: ‘This is scary’June 18, 2024

Left-leaning billionaire George Soros is trying to recruit the Democrat-controlled Federal Communications Commission to help fast track his takeover of the nation’s second-biggest radio network. Soros, 93,pumped $400 million into Audacy in February, a network which reaches 165 million monthly listenersand includes a handful of conservative shows from hosts including Sean Hannity, Dana Loesch, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and Erick Erickson.

But their influence is likely to be muted if the billionaire takes over and imposes his agenda, as has happened with other media acquisitions. A source with knowledge of the deal told The Post: “The idea that George Soros is buying hundreds of local radio stations right before a national election and will keep broadcasting Sean Hannity and other conservative talk radio hosts on Audacy is not credible.”

However, to take control Soros Fund Management needs help from the FCC as the money funneled into buying the bankrupt network comes from abroad.

Under existing FCC rules, foreign company ownership of US radio stations is not allowed to exceed 25% — but a filing acquired by The Post details Soros’ asking the commission to make an exception. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr is raising an alarm that was first set off by Texas Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas) in April.

“The FCC should not create a special Soros shortcut,” Carr told The Post this week. “When it comes to a broadcast station acquisition of this size and magnitude – hundreds of radio stations across more than 45 markets – the FCC needs to run its full and normal review process. “The FCC should not be skipping steps or waiving required agency processes.”

Roy had earlier written the Soros group would usually petition to get its foreign funding sources vetted by the FCC first, but that they are trying to waive that process and put it off “until sometime down the road — indicating that those foreign stakeholders will be given ‘special warrants’ in the meantime,” Roy wrote in late April. The FCC did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

In the past two years, Soros Fund Management — a rep for which said they do not comment on ongoing transactions — has made big moves into American radio. It brokered Univision’s $60 million sale in 2022 of 18 mostly conservative Hispanic radio stations including right-wing powerhouse Radio Mambi. That same year, Soros invested another chunk of cash into the liberal podcast network Crooked Media, home of “Pod Save America.”

Audacy is the nation’s second-biggest radio network after the iHeart network with 220 stations including New York’s WFAN and 1010 WINS, as well as Los Angeles-based KROQ, according to bankruptcy filings. Sources told The Post Soros’s stake is equal to about 40% of the company’s senior debt — a massive chunk which, although not a majority, could yield effective control of the media giant when it emerges from bankruptcy.

The timing of the deal, just months before the 2024 presidential election, has raised eyebrows. One insider, noting he is a Republican, said he felt it possible Soros was buying the stake to exert influence on public opinion in leading up to the election.

“This is scary,” the source said at the time.

In June 2022, the Soros-backed Latino Media Network bought Mambí — a mainstay of Miami’s hardline anti-Communist Cuban exile community for decades — and 17 other Spanish-language radio stations from TelevisaUnivision in an estimated $60 million deal.

The newly-formed network was run by two former Democratic operatives, Stephanie Valencia and Jess Morales Rocketto, who worked on Barack Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s political campaigns. Valencia also worked in the Obama White House.

Venezuelan-born former Radio Mambí host Lourdes Ubieta quit the station after she learned of the takeover that summer. Ironically, Ubieta now hosts a conservative Spanish-language radio show, “En Este Pais con Lourdes Ubieta,” on Radio Libre 790 on the Audacy network in Miami, created after the demise of the old Radio Mambi. Ubieta cannot comment on her current job but told The Post the Latin Media Network, which did not respond to The Post’s request for comment, essentially neutralized Radio Mambi by shutting down all the political content at the station. “They kept the name Radio Mambi but they made it all soft shows like sports and entertainment,” Ubieta told The Post. “Everything was hard-core anti-Communism politics on Radio Mambi before. That’s all gone now.”

New York Copper Market Tightens Again, Piling Pressure on Shorts

Spot copper prices are again trading at a steep premium to later-dated futures in New York, putting fresh pressure on holders of short positions after a historic squeeze last month.

The July-delivery Comex copper traded at a 7.4 cent-per-pound premium to the September contract, in a condition known as backwardation that typically signals a supply shortage. The spread traded in an unprecedented 29.25-cent backwardation last month, putting huge pressure on commodity traders and investors with short positions in the July contract. The global copper market is comfortably supplied overall, and equivalent spot contracts in Shanghai and London are trading at deep discounts to futures.But inventories in Comex warehouses have fallen to a 15-year low, and last month’s squeeze has forced traders to scramble to find and ship the select brands of copper that can be delivered into the US to settle their exposure. If they can’t find the material, they may need to buy themselves out of their contracts, and risk driving the July contract to an even higher premium in the process. With less than six weeks to go until the expiry of the contract, the re-emergence of the steep backwardation is a sign that many short-position holders are yet to cover their exposure. For investors without the means to deliver metal, the backwardation means that they’d face losses buying back their shorts and rolling them forward to later dates. And to get out of the contracts, they’ll be at the mercy of holders of long positions who stand to profit taking the opposite side of the trade.

NASA delays Starliner return a few more days to study data

NASA and Boeing will take an additional four days to review all available data about the performance of the Starliner spacecraft before clearing the vehicle to return to Earth, officials said Tuesday.

Based on the new schedule, which remains pending ahead of final review meetings later this week, Starliner would undock at 10:10 pm ET on Tuesday, June 25, from the International Space Station (02:10 UTC on June 26).

This would set up a landing at 4:51 ET on June 26 (08:51 UTC) at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico.

During a news conference on Tuesday, the program manager for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, Steve Stich, said the four-day delay in the spacecraft's return would "give our team a little bit more time to look at the data, do some analysis, and make sure we're really ready to come home."

Working two major issues

NASA is still trying to clear two major hardware issues that occurred during the spacecraft's flight to the International Space Station nearly two weeks ago:

five separate leaks in the helium system that pressurizes Starliner's propulsion system and the failure of five of the vehicle's 28 reaction-control system thrusters as Starliner approached the station.

Since then, engineers from NASA and Boeing have been studying these two problems.

They took an important step toward better understanding both on Saturday, June 15, when Starliner was powered up for a thruster test.

During this test, engineers found that helium leak rates inside Starliner's Service Module were lower than the last time the vehicle was powered on.

Although the precise cause of the leak is not fully understood—it is possibly due to a seal in the flange between the thruster and manifold—the lower leak rate gave engineers confidence they could manage the loss of helium.

Even before this decrease in the leak, Starliner had large reserves of helium, officials said. The test of the reaction control system thrusters also went well, Stich said. Four of the five thrusters operated normally, and they are expected to be available for the undocking of Starliner later this month.

These thrusters, which are fairly low-powered, are primarily used for small maneuvers. They will also be needed for the de-orbit burn that will set Starliner on its return path to Earth. Starliner can perform this burn without a full complement of thrusters, but Stich did not say how many could be safely lost.

First operational mission when?

NASA is being cautious about Starliner because this is the first crewed flight of the vehicle, which NASA funded to provide transportation services to the International Space Station.

The goal is to provide regular flights of four astronauts to the space station for six-month rotations. This initial test flight, carrying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, is intended to provide data to certify the vehicle for operational missions.

The first opportunity for Boeing to fly one of these operational missions is early 2025, likely in February or March. NASA will soon need to decide whether to give this slot to Starliner or SpaceX's Dragon vehicle for the Crew-10 mission—NASA's 10th operational flight on Dragon.

Given the technical problems that cropped up on the current test flight, it seems likely that NASA will push Starliner's operational mission to the next available slot, likely in August or September of 2025.

However, Stich said Tuesday no decision has been made and that NASA needs to study the results of this test flight. "We haven't looked too much ahead to Starliner-1," he said.

"We've got to go address the helium leaks. We're not gonna go fly another mission like this with the helium leaks, and we've got to go understand what the rendezvous profile is doing that's causing the thrusters to have low thrust, and then be deselected by the flight control team."

Although Starliner's first crewed flight has challenged NASA and Boeing, Stich said the process has not been frustrating. “I would not characterize it as frustration," he said Tuesday. "I would characterize it as learning.”

Bogus Russian dossier peddler and Democrat Party problem fixer Marc Elias has again injected himself into a key election integrity case to “defend the broken status quo.”

Swing-state Nevada’s dirty voter rolls include hundreds of suspect addresses, at bars, strip clubs, empty parking lots, and other commercial addresses, according to an investigation by the Public Interest Legal Foundation. Doing so is clearly against the law.

“In Nevada, by the state law, you are required to be registered where you actually live, where you sleep. Not where you work, not at a P.O. Box. So we’re trying to get elections officials to enforce the law,” Lauren Bis, PILF’s director of communication and engagement, says in a video tracking bad addresses in the Las Vegas area.

To that end, the foundation has filed a petition in Washoe County, Nevada’s second-most populous county, to force elections officials to investigate and fix commercial addresses on the voter roll. PILF investigators found addresses on the rolls reported as liquor stores, empty lots, and even the Nevada Gaming Control Board, among others.

Elias Law Group and a band of leftists have sought to intervene in PILF’s petition for a writ of mandamus, arguing that forcing Washoe election administrators to follow the law and clean up the county’s dirty voter rolls will “threaten” voting rights.

The would-be intervenors claim that their members and constituents would be forced to “expend substantial resources to educate voters and protect them from baseless attacks on their eligibility.”

As The Federalist recently reported, Bis was greeted with a lot of quizzical looks from employees at the casinos, fast-food restaurants, retailers, post offices, funeral homes, strip clubs, tattoo parlors, and jails where registered voters — at least according to Nevada’s dirty voter rolls — “resided.” What PILF found was equal parts sad and hilarious, foundation President J. Christian Adams told me on “The Federalist Radio Hour.”

The election integrity public interest law firm tracked data from the Nevada secretary of state’s office, which in the 2022 midterm elections reported 95,556 ballots sent to undeliverable, or “bad,” addresses. PILF investigators documented commercial addresses purported to be the residences of registered voters, confirming on video that the individuals did not live where they reported residing.

“We’ve been to all of the locations. It’s not some data exercise we see sitting at a computer in Chicago. We’ve actually got boots on the ground looking for the voters, and they don’t exist,” Adams said.

It’s almost as amusing as Elias and friends’ apparent efforts to stop election officials from following the law under the absurd premise of voter rights. Their court filing offers a dire warning about what will happen if Washoe County is required to do what PILF has done: Washoe County’s job.

“If the Court grants such relief, Respondent Burgess — and other clerks and registrars across the state — will be flooded with third-party demands to investigate all manner of alleged peculiarities in the voter rolls, based on unsourced, unverified, and unsworn information,” the court filing admonishes. “Petitioners are not the only ones making such demands. Nevada is in the midst of a storm of baseless efforts by third parties to force election officials to undertake a rushed purge of registered voters before the November election.”

Adams called Elias’ latest lawfare stunt a “cry wolf exercise.”

“He does this all over the country. He spools up these progressive astroturf organizations and they file a legal brief, which they have done in our case, which we have to respond to, that says, ‘Oh, if you listen to these evil conservatives, there will be eligible people improperly removed from the rolls.’ Nonsense,” said Adams, who formerly served in the Voting Section at the U.S. Department of Justice and was appointed to President Trump’s Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

Air Force Civilian Employees at Cyber Command Transfer to the U.S. Army

On June 2, the United States Army assumed the Combatant Command Support Agent (CCSA) role for the USCC, and as a result, about 350 Air Force civilian employees at the USCC will now become Army civilians working for the U.S. Army Cyber Command (ARCYBER). Since its inception in 2017 as a united of the U.S. Air Force, the USCC has been responsible for the administrative and logistical support of a combatant command. Its civilian workforce is expected to grow to more than 700 Army civilians working for the combatant command.

According to a report from DefenseScoop, the civilian employees will maintain their current positions and even pay grades, while the Army will become responsible for the administration of USCC.

“This was a monumental effort by the U.S. Cyber Command, Army and ARCYBER teams. Our top priority during this entire effort was to ensure we did everything we could to take care of the civilian workforce,” said ARCYBER Deputy to the Commanding General Jeffrey R. Jones.

The full moon of June, also called the Strawberry Moon, will occur on June 21 at 9:08 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (0108 UTC June 22), according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Observers in Oceania will see a nearly full moon pass in front of the star Antares, Alpha Scorpii, the brightest star in Scorpius, the Scorpion, on June 20.

In New York City, moonrise will occur at 8:49 p.m. EDT on June 21. The sun will set at 8:31 p.m. EDT on that day.

This full moon happens on the day after the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year; full moons occur within a day of the solstices about every 19 to 20 years.

There's some dispute about what counts as a full moon falling "on the solstice" – it depends on how close in time one wants the two phenomena to be.

For example, the Summer Solstice in 2024 is counted as occurring at 4:05 p.m. EDT on June 20, and the full moon is a little more than 30 hours later.

The moon will pass in front of – or occult – Antares the day before the full moon, but the event won't be visible from New York.

North American sky watchers will see a very close pass of the moon just to the south of, or "below," Antares.

A full moon happens when the moon is opposite the sun with the Earth between the two. On the night side of Earth, that's when viewers can see a fully illuminated moon.

Full moons are reckoned relative to the positions of the moon and Earth; the timing of a full moon is the same all over the world, meaning any perceived differences in such timing are solely due to one's time zone.

While the moon turns full at 9:08 p.m. EDT in New York, for a London-based sky the full moon occurs at 1:08 a.m. local time the next day, and a Japan-based observer would see it happen at 9:08 a.m. local time.

While many around the world will only see the moon closely passing Antares, those located in a swath of the Pacific Ocean will see the moon pass in front of the star, which is the brightest in the constellation Scorpius, the Scorpion.

One of the larger cities this occultation will be visible from is Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea, where one can see the moon touch Antares on June 21 at 8:10 p.m. local time, according to In-the-sky.org, and Antares will appear to emerge from behind the moon at 8:34 p.m.

Other places where one can see the occultation include Suva, in Fiji, where Antares passes behind the moon June 21 at 11:04 p.m. local time and emerges at 12:21 a.m. local time on June 22.

Unlike lunar phases, spotting occultations is affected by one's location. In the case of occultations by the moon, our natural satellite is close enough that moving from one part of the Earth's surface to another can alter the moon's apparent position against the stars by up to two degrees.

So, an observer in Honolulu, which is further north than Fiji or the Solomon Islands, will see the moon pass just to the south of Antares, in close conjunction at about 1:33 a.m. local time on June 21;

the moon will pass about 0.3 degrees south of the star, less than a single lunar diameter (the moon is so bright that Antares can be hard to spot so close by).

Other regions will be on the day side of Earth, so the Moon wouldn't have risen yet or will have set already when the occultation occurs.
