Josh Frydenberg’s “world-first” media reform a hand-out to billionaire mates

Josh Frydenberg sallied forth with a fulsome pat on the back this week … for himself.

“The Coalition’s ‘world-first’ Media Bargaining Code was a ‘success’,” pronounced the former Treasurer. A success indeed; a terrific success for the Coalition’s media mates Rupert Murdoch, Peter Costello and Kerry Stokes.

To be fair to Josh, he was only repeating what was in the press. Josh’s “media reforms” had forced Google and Facebook to pay millions in cash (secretly) to Big Media. In return, the News Corp, Nine, Guardian Australia and so forth sang the praises of Josh’s “world-first”. Manufacturing consent is a breeze, you just have to pay people.

This “official Treasury review” is an embarrassment to a once proud institution known for its rigorous analysis and political independence. Either the sharp minds of Treasury don’t know how the internet works or they are wilfully ignorant.

Moreover, the “official report” looks like it has been tampered with, its introductory page glossed up with the words “success”, “world-first” and “performed well”. The rest of this skimpy document touches on some of the problems with the Code but mostly misses the mark.

“We held our nerve, took on the digital giants, and won!” said Josh. No you didn’t, you got played by Rupert Murdoch in return for unctuous news coverage to make you look good, keep you in office.

A world-first joke

Josh’s heroes Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan would be giggling in their graves. This Media Bargaining Code is corporate welfare for billionaires. Worse, it is secretive, anti-competitive, anti-innovation, a world-first joke.

For those who are not au fait with this “world-first”, here it is in dot-points:

Murdoch and Nine whined that Google and Facebook were “stealing our content”. (They weren’t; they don’t publish the content, they publish links to the content, free advertising.)

Josh and co pull out all stops to force Google and Facebook to make cash payments to Big Media. All secret, no effective law or regulatory framework.

Big Media says it’s great.

Google, which had finally begun to pay some tax in Australia, then said forget that, we’ve been extorted.

Treasury issues Code review this week.

A Thatcher or Reagan purist would espouse a policy with free markets, competition, innovation. The Code simply subsidises old media. There has been no “designation”, no “arbitration”, no transparency, no public interest outcome. Just corporate welfare.

And the three greatest challenges of media reform – delivering competition to the Big Media oligopoly, addressing the creeping menace of surveillance capitalism by digital giants Google and Facebook, and defamation reform, remain neglected.

I think maybe the baddies and their slaves will go underground thinking they are set for the "event" and that they've "taken care of" the remaining surface dwellers to as to eliminate the competition in the aftermath. However, in a massive head fake, the ones hiding underground are the actual ones targeted for destruction and will wish they HAD died. Jesus takes His Bride (the church also called the ekklesia) out of harms way.

I am not sure of this, of course, but it might reconcile the obvious impending earth changes with why some folks want to destroy all of us.

I plan to do some more research on this subject because I think Ben has a lot of credibility and the censorship of the Chan Thomas book(I think that's the author) supports this. However, there is something supernatural about what is happening that I can only address with God's help through Jesus.

On this day in history, December 4, 1783, General George Washington said:

The Revolutionary War had come to a successful end.

Washington, then-commanding general of the Continental Army, rallied his military officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City, according to History.com.

There, he informed his troops that he would be stepping down from his commission to return to civilian life.

The account continues: "After the officers had taken a glass of wine General Washington said, ‘I cannot come to each of you but shall feel obliged if each of you will come and take me by the hand.’ General Knox, the closest officer to Washington, walked up to the General and the two hugged and kissed with tears running down their faces." 

"In the same affectionate manner every officer in the room marched up and parted with the general in chief. Such a scene of sorrow and weeping I had never before witnessed and fondly hope I may never be called to witness again."

Washington embraced about 30 of his soldiers one by one — and then left for Annapolis, Maryland.

The general officially resigned his commission on Dec. 23 in front of the Continental Congress, delivering an emotional address.

He remarked that "having now finished the work assigned me, I retire from the great theatre of action, and bidding an affectionate farewell to this august body, under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission, and take my leave of all the employments of public life."

Washington then returned to Mount Vernon, Virginia, with the expectation of retiring as a gentleman farmer.

But in 1789, Washington was persuaded back into politics — and was elected as America’s first-ever commander-in-chief.

He would remain president until 1797.

Today we can fuel up at almost any corner at a choice of fuel stations. Less than 5 min from home in most cases. Short lines 98% of the time.

In EV world there will be a shortage of charging stations and many will not have home lines (low-mid income homes, apartment/ condos complexes etc.).

Further, it something happens or someone decides to cut power to a wide area - it's 'off the grid' for a time.

Of course the generation of green electricity could never power EVs let alone industrial operations and public needs (Subways lights in any city).

We have brown outs and black outs as it is with today's fossil fuels generating electricity.

Back to the key point - in a green energy landscape it will be easier to 'shut down' mobility - for those fortunate enough to be able to own an EV.
