Inflation is surging across America, led by the exploding price of gasoline, which is at its highest price ever in many places.

The average now is well over $4 a gallon, and in some places it's $7, after Joe Biden took office with prices at $2.40.

And the "pain" that Americans are feeling is something that Democrats in Congress urged the oil industry to inflict just a matter of months ago.

The Free Beacon reported that while Joe Biden's White House claims it is doing "nothing" to discourage oil companies from producing energy the nation needs, Democrats in Congress did just that.

They, according to the report, "pressured oil executives to decrease outputs because of climate change, raising questions about the Democratic Party's strategy to lower prices for consumers."

"You can draw a direct line from how the Democrats marauded energy production yesterday to the unprecedented pain Americans are feeling at the pump today," CounterPoint Strategies president Jim McCarthy, a policy adviser for energy companies, explained in the report.

It was just last October that the House Oversight and Reform Committee, run by Democrats, ordered the top officers for Exxon, BP, Shell, and Chevron to show up "to explain what steps they are taking to produce less oil and gas," the report said.

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., claimed then, when gasoline prices along with virtually all other consumer items were surging in prices because of inflation under Biden's policies, that the world "can't wait." ..

Police detain "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler after teller believed he was trying to rob bank

"Black Panther" and "Creed" director Ryan Coogler was briefly detained by police in Atlanta in January after he was mistaken for a bank robber, video footage released by Atlanta police on Wednesday shows.

Coogler, 35, was detained by police before being released on Jan. 7 after he went into a Bank of America branch to make a withdrawal.

The director handed the bank teller a withdrawal slip with a note written on the back that reportedly read, "I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet," the Variety report said.

The bank teller misinterpreted the situation as an attempted robbery when the transaction amount exceeded $10,000 and informed her boss, who then called police.

"From we got the call, sounded like someone was trying to rob the bank," one of the officers says in the bodycam footage.

Coogler was released after police were able to clear up the confusion.

California Army National Guard Commander on Ukraine: We Must Stand Ready

The California Army National Guard commander on Sunday sent a memorandum to soldiers serving in the California Army National Guard — which is partnered with Ukrainian forces under the State Partnership Program — asking them to “stand ready.”

The subject of the memorandum, obtained by Breitbart News, and issued by Army Maj. Gen. Laura L. Yeager, was “Letter to the Field — Ukraine.”

“We cannot predict what our role may be at home or abroad, therefore we must stand ready. We ask each of you to self-assess and seize the initiative to improve your personal readiness,” Yeager wrote.

The memorandum said in full:

As we watch the war unfold in our partner nation of Ukraine, our role as defenders of democracy is highlighted and increased in importance. Democracy can coexist with all peaceful nations but the actions of President Putin prove that oppressive states choose not to respect the sovereignty of democratic free countries.

I am proud of our lasting partnership with Ukraine and their valiant fight to protect their freedom and their nation is inspiring. We are working diligently with our state and federal partners to help facilitate getting the Ukrainian military and citizens the equipment and humanitarian assistance they need to continue their defense.

We cannot predict what our role may be at home or abroad, therefore we must stand ready. We ask each of you to self-assess and seize the initiative to improve your personal readiness. I encourage each of you to ensure you are continually working to increase your physical fitness, further your military education and train hard to be ready when needed. Speak to your friends and connect them with a local recruiter if they choose to serve to strengthen the readiness of our formations.

California Military Department Public Affairs Office Director Lt. Col. Brandon Hill confirmed the memo was authentic.

“I can confirm that is a memorandum sent by Maj Gen Yeager to the California Army National Guard component and personnel serving under her command. Her statement illustrates the importance of our motto or ‘Always Ready, Always There’ for National Guard service members. It also highlights our special relationship with the armed forces of Ukraine through the State Partnership Program in the 30 years we have partnered and trained with them,” he said in a statement.

He noted that the California Military Department recently published an e-newsletter on its partnership with Ukrainian forces.

The State Partnership Program pairs states’ National Guard forces with other nations’ military for training.

The program stems from a 1991 U.S. European Command decision to pair up American reservists with former Soviet Bloc nations and is administered by the National Guard Bureau. California National Guard troops have been matched with Ukrainian forces since 1993.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even visited Moffett Air Field in California last September.

Massachusetts health department admits 'significant overcount' of COVID-19 deaths — and the number could still be much too high

The Massachusetts Department of Health announced this week that it would be tweaking its health tracking methodology after the approach led to a "significant overcount" in COVID-19 deaths in the state.

In a press release Thursday, the department acknowledged it would be retroactively removing 4,081 deaths from the state's overall count while adding 400 deaths, making the net change a decrease of roughly 3,700.

The overcount was reportedly the result of a faulty criterion for inclusions that logged deaths as resulting from COVID-19 if the individual had a confirmed positive test within a certain timeframe prior to their passing.

WHDH-TV reported that under the old methodology, Massachusetts deemed a fatality COVID-related if it met at least one of three criteria:

A case investigation determined the virus "caused" or "contributed" to the death;

The death certificate listed COVID-19 or an "equivalent term" as the cause; or

The deceased individual had a COVID-19 diagnosis within 60 days of death.

In accordance with guidance from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the department decided to cut that timeframe in half. Moving forward, the state will log a COVID-19 death insofar as the individual had a confirmed positive test within 30 days of their passing.

"This strategy worked well at the beginning of the pandemic," Public Health Commissioner Margret Cooke told the outlet. "But over time, our approach proved to be too expansive and led to a significant overcount of deaths in Massachusetts. People who had gotten COVID earlier in 2020 and died for other reasons ended up still being included in COVID-associated death counts."

Critics will note that the state's new methodology — though an improvement — will likely still produce inflated results since, remarkably, it continues to log deaths as COVID-19 deaths so long as the deceased merely presented with an infection before they passed away, regardless of whether the virus could be determined as an actual cause of death.

Notwithstanding, state epidemiologist Dr. Catherine Brown said the update will "make sure that what we are capturing is the acute impact of COVID."

"People who are seriously ill and hospitalized for longer and end up dying after that 30 days have almost invariably had COVID listed on their death certificate, so they end up being counted under another method," she explained.

As of the time of this article's publication, more than 23,000 COVID-related deaths had been reported in Massachusetts. The department has not made clear how many COVID-19 deaths out of the whole have been counted using the infection timeframe criterion.

In her hotel suite at the Intercontinental in San Francisco last weekend, Jill Biden spontaneously scrapped a prepared fundraising pitch she was set to give later that day.

But there was something else on her mind – Biden had awoken that morning to the news in Ukraine, growing ever more concerning as Russia escalated its attacks against civilians. She reached for a pencil, grabbed a pad of paper and started to write down her thoughts, according to two people familiar with Biden's activities.

The words she wrote down later ended up in a speech to benefactors at a private home in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood that was raw with the uncertainty of the moment.

"We don't know where it's going to go. We just don't know. And we're all just holding our breath, aren't we? That something, some answer will come so that we don't get into this world war. It's unbelievable, right? To think that that could happen in our lifetime," she said, the paper in front of her dabbled with handwritten margin notes and cross-throughs. "I just have to turn on the TV every morning and pray that Zelensky is still alive."

A White House official tells CNN Biden has yet to initiate one-on-one contact with Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska due to deep security concerns but would not confirm whether any communication had already occurred from Zelenska to Biden.

CNN has reached out to the East Wing for comment on this story.

In Biden's San Francisco remarks at the private event, she expressed her concern for the people of Ukraine, and for her husband as he balances incoming information, decisions and negotiations.

"The phone just never stops ringing, all through the night," she said of the wee hours in the White House Executive Residence. "And Joe is up, trying to help solve this crisis."

Biden has the only 24/7 perspective on how the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his invasion is affecting President Joe Biden. Unlike their predecessors, the first couple share a bedroom in the White House, and when there is a so-called "3 a.m. phone call," the first lady is up, too.

"Her biggest role is being his sounding board," said another person with knowledge of the Bidens' relationship, and his reliance on her advice and counsel.

The couple talk every morning, no matter where they are, often by telephone. The calls, the person said, can last several minutes and no topic is off-limits. Married for more than 40 years, those familiar with the first couple confirm to CNN that Joe Biden does not like to be apart from his wife for more than two consecutive nights; a three- or four-night stretch is sometimes unavoidable, but not preferable.

When she has to be away, the first lady is often serving as the President's emotional emissary, as she was in San Francisco, attending the memorial service of Richard Blum, longtime friend of the Bidens and husband to California Sen. Dianne Feinstein. However, on a three-day domestic trip this week, which took the first lady to Arizona, Nevada and Kentucky, Biden made a pivot to political and policy messenger, reiterating the themes of the President's State of the Union address.

She talked up the American Rescue Plan, childcare, education, job training and the cancer Moonshot. But Ukraine crept in.>>15831214

Near Reno, Nevada, while touring a community college, Biden said during her remarks that she had constant concern for the people of Ukraine.

"This has just been so shocking to all of us," Biden said, before shifting back to her hype-woman role for her husband. "In the face of uncertainty, he is unshakable, and I hope you saw that in the State of the Union and when he was on yesterday when he was talking about the oil embargo."

But by Wednesday night, at her last stop of the trip at Fort Campbell the Army base in Kentucky that is home to the 101st Airborne Biden had almost entirely given up the pretext she should, or could, talk to the assembled military and their families about anything other than the war waging in Ukraine.

The first lady had tacked on the Fort Campbell stop as the finale of her trip at the last minute, after realizing many of the troops the President was planning to send to Poland, shoring up an eastern NATO ally, could come from this base. Many of the people she was speaking to at the barbeque event which attempted a festive mood, offering mac 'n cheese, pulled pork and chicken, green beans and salad had recently seen off loved ones for a deployment no one yet knows how long will last.

"You're doing the hard stuff. Sure, they're doing the hard stuff … but you're keeping it all together for your loved one," Biden said. "You didn't have time to say that lengthy goodbye."

She also vocalized her distaste the Russian President.

"We are holding Putin accountable for his war through diplomacy with crippling sanctions. We are providing Ukraine with economic, humanitarian, and security assistance. And the Screaming Eagles are there in Europe, standing with our allies and welcoming Ukrainian refugees," she said, using the nickname and motto for the base's airborne division. "When you want it done, ask the 101!"

Biden's emotional and political pleas for support for her husband's policies and decisions as world watches in horror at the bloody invasion are just another curveball in her tenure as first lady. One year in and Biden has had to deal with almost unprecedented catastrophe: a global pandemic, a country divided over vaccine and mask mandates, economic decline and the slow trudge back to fiscal and functioning normalcy.

And now, war.

"There are moments when we suddenly realize that history is being written in front of us – when we can almost feel ourselves cross the line that will divide our world into 'before' and 'after,'" said Biden at Fort Campbell. "This is one of those moments."

-In mid-February, hackers gained access to computers belonging to current and former employees at nearly two dozen major natural gas suppliers and exporters, including Chevron Corp., Cheniere Energy Inc. and Kinder Morgan Inc., according to research shared exclusively with Bloomberg News.

The attacks targeted companies involved with the production of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, and they were the first stage in an effort to infiltrate an increasingly critical sector of the energy industry, according to Gene Yoo, chief executive officer of Los Angeles-based Resecurity Inc., which discovered the operation. They occurred on the eve of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when energy markets were already roiled by tight supplies.

Resecurity’s investigation began last month when the firm’s researchers spotted a small number of hackers, including one linked to a wave of attacks in 2018 against European organizations that Microsoft Corp. attributed to Strontium, the company’s nickname for a hacking group associated with Russia’s GRU military intelligence service.
