U.S. Funds Ukrainian Former Bioweapons Facility Handling ‘Dangerous Materials… With Windows Wide Open’.

The lab’s scientists said they work without Western-style safety equipment.

A Ukrainian biolab receiving funds from the U.S. government was formerly a bioweapons factory under the control of the Soviet Union, with experts recently reporting a “lack of modern biosafety equipment” as well as “lethal microbes that in the West would be locked away in high-containment laboratories,” the National Pulse can reveal.

An article published by the Washington Post on August 30th, 2005 – “U.S. to Aid Ukraine in Countering Bioweapons” – reveals a lab now receiving U.S. government funds formerly “supplied highly lethal pathogens to Soviet bioweapons factories”:

“One lab to receive funding is the I.I. Mechnikov Antiplague Scientific and Research Institute, in the Black Sea port city of Odessa. The institute was part of a Cold War network of “antiplague” stations that supplied highly lethal pathogens to Soviet bioweapons factories.”

In 2008, researchers from the James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Studies in Monterey California noted of the the Mechnikov facility:

“…its management claimed in 2003 that it knew nothing about either the Soviet offensive or defensive [bioweapons] program. We question the second since it was in effect a closed facility until the late 1980s and worked on highly dangerous Group II pathogens and, probably, at least at time on some Group I pathogens since at least 1965. It would make sense if at least one of its laboratories worked on Problem 5 projects.

“Problem 5” was the codename given to the Soviet bioweapons program.

Another report by the James Martin Center revealed disturbing practices at the U.S.-funded facility (emphases added):

The lack of modern biosafety equipment is also raising concern among U.S. officials about the potential for an accidental release of deadly bacteria and viruses. In Odessa, where 44 scientists and about 140 support staff carry out research in the I.I. Mechnikov Anti-plague Scientific and Research Institute, scientists wearing cotton smocks and surgical masks work with lethal microbes that in the West would be locked away in high-containment laboratories and handled only by scientists in spacesuits. The lab’s scientists said their training in handling dangerous materials allowed them to work safely with pathogens without Western-style safety equipment—which they viewed as unnecessary and which in any case they cannot afford. “Many of the institutes are located in downtown areas, and some work with pathogens with windows wide open,” said Sonia Ben Ouagrham, who coauthored the Monterey study with Zilinskas and Alexander Melikishvili.

The news follows Biden State Department official Victoria Nuland telling the U.S. Senate that the American government is concerned about biological research facilities falling into Russian hands as a result of the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe, despite the department appearing to correct her testimony the following day.

The unearthed article also confirms a previous National Pulse report revealing how former President Barack Obama spearheaded negotiations leading to the lab eventually receiving U.S. government funds as part of a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Defense.

“The agreement, the result of more than a year of negotiations, was announced by Sens. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) during a visit to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev,” notes The Washington Post.

A separate article from The Irish Times – “Odessa Labs Host Deadly Legacy” – explains the Odessa-based laboratory’s former connections to the Soviet Union’s biological weapons programs.

Dubbed a “repository of knowledge, equipment and lethal pathogens that could be useful to bioterrorists,” the lab Obama negotiated to receive U.S. funds was highlighted for its inadequate safety precautions.

Birdbrained! Kremlin Now Casts Self As Victim Of Avian Conspiracy To Justify New Attacks

Days before Russia invaded Ukraine, all the Kremlin and its proxies could talk about was potential aggression from Kyiv.

“The armed forces of the enemy are in combat formations and are ready for the forceful capture of Donbas,” Denis Pushilin, a Russian proxy leader operating in Ukraine, claimed on Feb. 16. “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky will soon issue a decree to the military to go on the offensive and implement a plan for the invasion of the territory.”

Ukraine, of course, never did invade.

But one week after Pushilin’s remarks, Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine’s territory, claiming to be on a peace-keeping mission.

That move — accusing an enemy of an act that you are about to or have committed — is a familiar tactic from Putin. In 2017, Putin himself remarked that the “U.S. has always interfered in Russia’s elections.”

And so Western policymakers have been alarmed in recent days to see the the Kremlin begin making insane noises about a potential chemical or biological attack in Ukraine, supposedly launched out of U.S.-sponsored biolabs.

“Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false-flag operation using them,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday. “It’s a clear pattern.”

As if on cue, on Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused the U.S. of trying to manufacture birdborne viruses to attack Russia … in Ukraine.

Conveniently, in the Ministry’s telling, the newly discovered labs are in cities where Russia has focused much of its military attention: Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa.

It’s a trolling, bizarro-world, ex post facto echo of the U.S. claims about weapons of mass destruction that were never found in Iraq. But after weeks of war in Ukraine without a smidgen of a causus belli, the Kremlin appears to have seized on a fantasy that may appeal to germaphobes and American conservatives alike: birds, and the biolaboratories supposedly devoted to weaponizing them.

The Russian announcement is straight out of central casting, replete with a secret project code name and strategically located Ukrainian cities. The Kremlin calls it “Project UP-4,” allegedly involving labs in the three major Ukrainian cities in the crosshairs of the ongoing Russian offensive.

The core of the allegation is that the labs were to create a mutated bird flu virus with a 50 percent kill rate. The virus could, in the Kremlin’s telling, then spread via birds with migratory patterns across Russia.

“From all the U.S.-produced means of destabilizing the epidemiological situation, this is one of the most reckless and irresponsible, as it does not allow for the situation to be controlled further,” Russia’s Ministry of Defense said in the statement.

It’s a narrative that plays on Western conspiracy mongering around the origins of COVID-19, with some on the right still insisting that the virus was intentionally released by a U.S.-funded Chinese bioweapons lab.

In Russia’s iteration, it’s U.S.-funded research in Ukrainian biolabs that, two weeks after the war began, suddenly necessitates some form of Russian intervention.

Apart from the White House, other Western officials are raising the alarm about a potential biological or chemical weapons attack by Russia in Ukraine.

An unnamed NATO official told the Wall Street Journal that Russia seems to be creating a pretext for one, while British officials said at a briefing this week that “we’ve got good reason to be concerned about possible use of non-conventional weapons” in Ukraine.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet told the U.N. Human Rights Council on Monday her staff recorded 304 deaths caused by military airstrikes in northern Ethiopia since November 2021 “apparently carried out by the Ethiopian Air Force.”

Bachelet’s allegation implies Ethiopia’s federal government supported lethal air attacks on its own civilians over the past four months. Ethiopia’s envoy to the U.N. Human Rights Council, Mahlet Hailu Guadey, dismissed Bachelet’s statement on March 7, saying it “was at variance with the facts on the ground,” according to Reuters.

“Ethiopia abides by its national and international human rights obligations,” Mahlet said.

Ethiopia’s federal government has been engaged in a civil war with separatist forces from northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region since November 4, 2020. The conflict began when militants allied with the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) — which formed in 1975 based on Marxist ideology — attacked federal military bases in Tigray. In response, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered an air and ground offensive against the TPLF and allied forces in Tigray. The civil war spread beyond northern Ethiopia and threatened to penetrate the national capital of Addis Ababa — located in the heart of the country — by November 2021.

While Abiy has openly ordered the Ethiopian Air Force to conduct airstrikes on locations within Tigray directly tied to the TPLF, Ethiopia’s federal government has repeatedly denied targeting civilians during the 16-month-long civil war.

“Aid workers say civilians have been killed in several air strikes, including a bombing on the night when Ethiopian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas Eve in the town of Dedebit, in northwest Tigray near the border with Eritrea in January [2022],” Reuters noted on March 7.

Abiy has led Addis Ababa in its civil war against Tigray fighters despite his reputation as a broker of peace prior to the conflict. Abiy won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize in part for his efforts to successfully end a war between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea. In an extraordinary turn of events, Abiy personally led Ethiopian federal troops on the “frontline” of a battle against TPLF forces in November 2021.

“[Ethiopian] Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the army Abiy Ahmed who is now leading the Ethiopian National Defense Forces from the frontline announced that the army has successfully taken control of Asagita in Afar Region,” Ethiopia’s state-run Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) reported on November 26, 2021.

“We won’t give in until we bury the enemy,” Abiy told FBC. “All Ethiopians at home and abroad have shown their solidarity to us. Similar victories will continue. We are in a better position to claim full victory soon and pass on a free and prosperous Ethiopia to coming generations.”

“What we want to see is an Ethiopia that stands on our sacrifices — either to be Ethiopian or to be Ethiopia,” the prime minister affirmed.

The ABC understands Senator Kitching, 52, died of a suspected heart attack on Thursday afternoon.

She began feeling unwell while driving between two meetings and pulled over before calling her husband, Andrew Landeryou.

An ambulance was called but she could not be resuscitated and died near to where her vehicle was parked.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese said the party was "in shock" over her sudden death and she would be "deeply missed by us all".

"All of us in the Labor family are in shock tonight at the sudden death of our friend and colleague, senator Kimberley Kitching," Mr Albanese said.

"We have lost one of our own, far too young."

"Kimberley gave so much. She had so very much ahead of her.

"Kimberley had such a larger-than-life personality that it is tragic that her bright light has gone out far too early.

"Our thoughts now are now with her family and all who loved her, especially her husband Andrew."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Senator Kitching was "a parliamentarian in the truest sense" and "deeply respected by the Coalition".

"She demonstrated that her passion for her country was always greater than any partisan view," he said.

"She clearly loved her country and it genuinely showed."

Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles said: "Nothing can describe the shock and sadness of this news."

"I have known Kimberley as a friend for over 30 years. Words cannot express the sadness of this moment," he said.

"The Labor Party, the Senate and the country have lost a unique power."

Former Labor leader Bill Shorten said Senator Kitching's passing was "an immense loss to Labor and the nation".

"To know Kimberley was to be touched, not just by her serene intellect, but her incredible warmth and vivacity," Mr Shorten said in a statement.

"As a Labor senator she was relentlessly energetic and conscientious, recently resulting in international recognition for her human rights work.

"As well as her innumerable accolades she has been a wonderful friend to myself, my wife Chloe, and our family."

Australian politician Kimberley Kitching who passed away in Melbourne on Thursday, March 10, 2022, had lost a considerable amount of weight over the years.

After being elected as the city’s senator in 2016 the politician had been following a strict diet plan and disciplined lifestyle. She had no illness or any health condition.

Kitching died unexpectedly of a heart attack, and she was known for being extremely loyal to her job and the people of Victoria.

She was serving as the Labor Senator for Victoria since October 2016. Before turning into politics, she worked as a lawyer and a trade unionist.

The news of her demise has been confirmed by Labor Leader Anthony Albanese.

“The Labor family is in shock tonight at the tragic news that our friend and colleague Senator Kimberley Kitching has died suddenly in Melbourne. My sincere condolences to her family. Kimberley will be missed by us all”, the politician wrote on his Twitter.

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — More than three months after Seth Rich was gunned down in Northwest Washington— his killer(s)were still on the loose.

We're calling upon the DC police department, the DC Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, the Bloomingdale Civic Association to continue to work with us to ensure that we bring to justice the individual or individuals responsible for murdering Seth,” said DNC Chairperson Donna Brazile.

On Monday, at the DNC headquarters senior staff, including chairperson Donna Brazille, dedicated a bike rack to the former avid cyclist.

"This dedication is important to us not as a memorial, but as a dedication and celebration of who Seth was and how Seth lived," DNC director of voter expansion Pratt Wiley said.

Prior to his death, Rich was a Voter Expansion Data Director at the DNC. Most days he rode his bike to work. In July, he parked his bike at the rack in DC for the last time.

"To be reminded each and every day when we come in the huge task that we have to do, and to be reminded every night before we go home as just one last check to say did we do everything we could today to make the world better,” Wiley said.

Since the week of his death, conspiracy theories swirled around Rich's murder. WikiLeaks continues to offer a $20,000 reward. A GOP Lobbyist is also offering more than $100,000 for information. DC Police don't believe it was anything but a robbery gone wrong.

This plaque will now stay here in Rich's honor. Each day its designed to remind staff of the legacy Rich left behind and the battle to find his killer moving forward.
