Putin Puts American “Mercenaries” in Ukraine on Blast

On Monday afternoon the Russian president and Donald J. Trump shared yet another telephone call on which Putin expressed disappointment that American “mercenaries” in Ukraine are fighting on behalf of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and, by proxy, the bioterrorists, child traffickers, and pedophiles under his protection, said a Mar-a-Lago-source familiar with Trump and Putin’s conversation.

Putin shared with Trump a March 5 intelligence assessment that put the number of American paramilitary forces in Ukraine at approximately 575. He would not say how exactly the FSB, Russia’s Federal Security Service, arrived at that figure but claimed to have irrefutable evidence that they were committing atrocities against Russian forces.

When Trump asked Putin to expound on at least some evidence, the Russian president said four men, obviously American, were killed in battle while attempting to thwart Russian soldiers from isolating and eliminating an Israeli bioweapon engineer who had been holed up in a Kyiv townhouse.

“According to Putin, and I’m only relaying what he told Trump, not attesting to the veracity of his statements, his men entered the building and were heading up the stairs to the apartment of the bioweapon guy when they were ambushed from behind. Three Russians fell almost immediately, and the rest whirled around and returned fire. In all, six Russians and four Americans died, and Putin’s target got away,” our source said.

“President Trump, I understand these men have been tricked by Joseph Biden into defending the criminal Zelenskyy. I have no wish to harm Americans, but they cannot be running around wild or interfere with our sensitive operation. I know your military respects you, and you speak for them, so perhaps you–,” Putin reportedly began.

“President Putin, if they’re ex-military or law enforcement, you’re right, they don’t really know what’s going on over there. They were told you’re an invading force. I can’t speak for them. This is a huge problem, I get it. I understand you must do what you have to do,” Trump said.

Then Putin dropped another bombshell, saying his military had captured two American mercenaries who were in the midst of rigging explosives to the front and rear vehicles of a “peacekeeping” convoy tasked with delivering food, water, and medical supplies to both Russian troops and displaced Ukrainians caught in the crossfire. When interrogated, the mercenaries, who had no identification, refused to identify themselves or declare an allegiance, but said they were “freedom fighters” and “patriots.”

“These men, I can have them executed; they are saboteurs,” Putin said.

“How can you be sure they’re American?” Trump asked.

“President Trump, we know they are. Europeans do not speak with deep American southern accents,” Putin said.

“If true, President Putin, they’re not freedom fighters. They’re not patriots. I can’t speak for them, and if I could, I would in a big way, but I can’t stop ex-military from doing whatever they’re doing, even if it’s very wrong. I can tell you this: Our active duty won’t enter the conflict illegally. That’s all I can say on that matter,” Trump replied. “I can’t speak for all of NATO, but it’s a safe bet they won’t fight unless Americans do.”

In closing, Putin thanked Trump for his time and said he hoped for a swift end to the conflict, but put the onus on Zelenskyy to make peace a reality.

I have covered plenty of U.S. Presidents in my 35-year career as a photojournalist. Since the days of Ronald Reagan, I’ve captured the Commander in Chief in moments from the steps of Air Force One to the local putting greens.

These intersections of my job and theirs is typically scripted: They show up in town and, handed the assignment, I seek a perch from which to take a picture.

But I was doing one of the more mundane parts of my job, hunting for a slice-of-life photo for the next day’s paper, when I crossed paths with the man who would become the nation’s 45th president.

It was a sticky Monday morning in July 1995, when I pulled out of The Palm Beach Post parking lot and headed south on Dixie Highway.

I was in a Toyota Tercel that had outlived its air-conditioning and ahead of me was a factory-fresh Lemans blue Lamborghini Diablo Roadster.

Eager to pass the slow moving sports car worth some 10 times my ride, I pulled ahead only to realize my photo hunt could be over with the man seated behind the Lamborghini’s wheel: Palm Beach part-timer Donald Trump.

What was his glamorous destination?

I followed him.

His first stop? The Mobil gas station at the corner of Forest Hill Boulevard and Dixie.

Before my eyes an international business tycoon renown for ‘The Art of the Deal’ was about to execute his next purchase: gas.

I approached him, identifying myself as a Palm Beach Post photographer, and asked permission to take his picture.

His polite reply: No problem, but I bet this will end up in the tabloids.

It appeared in the July 4, 1995 edition of The Palm Beach Post.

Russia investigates use of conscripts in Ukraine operation

A number of conscripted soldiers have been taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces, Russia’s Defense Ministry has confirmed

Russia’s military acknowledged involvement of conscripted troops into the ongoing operation in neighboring Ukraine on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, we have discovered several facts of the presence of conscripts in the units of the Russian Armed Forces participating in a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, has said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that only professional soldiers have been involved into the operation. Ukrainian officials and Western media alike, however, have claimed that the invasion force had a vast number of conscripts in its ranks.

Nearly all the conscripted troops have already been withdrawn from Ukraine, Konashenkov said, adding thatthe military is currently investigating how they ended up participating in the operation in the first placeto make sure that it would not happen again. He also admitted that the conscripted troops sustained casualties during the conflict, with some of the servicemen ending up captured by the Ukrainian troops.

“A saboteur group of a nationalist battalion attacked one of the units performing the logistical support tasks.A number of servicemen, including conscripts, were captured,” Konashenkov stated without providing any specific figures.

Russia launched its large-scale military operation in neighboring Ukraine in late February, explaining it was the only option left to protect Donetsk and Lugansk. President Putin also outlined that the aim was to “denazify” and “demilitarize” the country. Kiev branded the attack “unprovoked”, claiming it had no plans to re-take the regions by force.

Donetsk and Lugansk split from Ukraine back in 2014 following the Maidan coup in Kiev, which ousted the country’s democratically elected government. The new Ukrainian leadership launched a military operation to quell the rebellion that ultimately devolved into years violence in Ukraine’s east.

The champagne and caviar days in Davos are over. Or at least the caviar.

The World Economic Forum has put on ice its relationships with Russia, including strategic partnerships with conglomerates run by oligarchs. A Kremlin-backed research center in Moscow and an advisory council led by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic adviser have also been torpedoed.

“We are not engaging with any sanctioned individual and have frozen all relations with Russian entities,” Amanda Russo, a WEF spokesperson, told POLITICO.

Frozen perhaps, but not dead: WEF is leaving open the possibility of serving as a bridge-builder between Russia and Ukraine once active conflict is over.

The 800-pound gorilla of the elite global conference circuit has walked a tightrope for decades when it comes to Russia: basking in the Kremlin’s attention while cringing over oligarch antics.

The Forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab, prides himself on making his annual meeting in Davos open to all comers, including via a personal relationship with Putin dating back to the early 1990s.

Putin and his predecessor as president, Dmitry Medvedev, have addressed WEF five times from 2007 to 2021. Putin was even invited to speak in January 2015, in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, but he turned down the invitation.

Introducing Putin to a virtual Davos gathering in January 2021, Schwab called Putin’s voice “essential” in world affairs, echoing a comment from 2009 that he could not think of a single issue of global importance that could be solved without Russia’s involvement. The pair last met in mid-2021, when Schwab told Putin of the “particular importance” he attaches to Russian representatives taking part in Davos events.

Schwab, via a spokesperson, chose not to directly comment on his relationship with Putin.

But the tides have turned. Not only is sucking up to Putin suddenly déclassé, but WEF is now forced to comply with U.S., EU and Swiss sanctions against Russia, which not only means cutting ties with Russian banks and oil companies — but juggling the sensitivities of the Belgium-based SWIFT international finance transfer system (a WEF six-figure “partner”), from which Russian entities are now banned.

SWIFT did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The dancing bears

Even before Putin’s presidency, Davos loomed large in the minds of Russian elites. An invitation to WEF was the ultimate stamp of global legitimacy for post-Soviet business leaders — and a chance to throw their weight and euros around.

The star turn of Gennady Zyuganov, the head of Russia’s Communist Party, at the 1996 WEF annual meeting, prompted Russian business leaders including Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Boris Berezovsky to form the “Davos Pact” — a plan to finance the presidential campaign of Boris Yeltsin, then polling in single digits, to prevent Communists returning to power.

Throughout the ‘90s, Russians partied hard in Davos, and the Russian delegation ballooned. By the time Putin and Medvedev began to speak on stage, it was common to find a dozen or more billionaire oligarchs in Davos.

Chrystia Freeland, deputy prime minister of Canada, sits on WEF’s board and led the push to eject Russian banks from SWIFT. A spokesperson for Freeland told POLITICO: “Canada will continue to work in lockstep with our partners to sanction President Putin and his hangers-on for their unprovoked and barbaric invasion of Ukraine,” adding “we encourage international organizations to do everything they can to support these efforts.”
