Biden Administration Doles Out $250K to Wuhan Lab-Linked Group

EcoHealth Alliance's founder waged a secret campaign to disprove the lab-leak theory

The Biden administration awarded more than $250,000 to an organization whose founder waged a secret campaign last year to undercut the theory that the coronavirus originated in a Chinese lab.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency granted $253,279 to EcoHealth Alliance in July to conduct research to thwart the use of viruses as weapons of mass destruction. EcoHealth Alliance worked closely with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the lab that many U.S. officials believe was ground zero for the coronavirus outbreak. The group's founder, Peter Daszak, secretly organized a group of scientists early in the pandemic to publicly undermine the theory that the pandemic sprung from a leak at the Wuhan lab.

The U.S. intelligence community is divided on whether the virus came from the lab or naturally spilled over from animals to humans. One intelligence agency assessed with moderate confidence that an accident at the Wuhan lab resulted in the first coronavirus infection, according to a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Four other intelligence agencies assessed with only low confidence that the first infection came through natural exposure. Though the lab-leak theory was widely dismissed in 2020, a growing number of scientists now say it is the most likely explanation for the outbreak.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which operates within the Defense Department, has awarded $37 million to EcoHealth since 2013, though the July grant was the first given during the Biden administration. The Trump and Biden administrations have investigated whether the Chinese government covered up evidence of a 2019 lab accident at the Wuhan Institute that may have caused the pandemic. Republicans in Congress have called for investigations into EcoHealth Alliance’s relationship with the Wuhan Institute.

Daszak, a British-American zoologist, organized a group of scientists in February 2020 to sign a letter published in the Lancet, the prominent British medical journal, which cast doubt on the lab-leak theory, according to emails released last year. Undisclosed in the letter was that the EcoHealth Alliance had received grants from the U.S. government to conduct research at the Wuhan Institute. The EcoHealth Alliance gave $600,000 in grants to the Wuhan Institute between 2014 and 2019, the Daily Caller reported.

One watchdog group investigating the origins of the virus called on the government to cut its funding for EcoHealth Alliance, citing the group’s refusal to cooperate with congressional documents requests.

"Taking tax dollars appropriated by Congress and thumbing your nose at oversight investigations into the origins of COVID-19 is unacceptable," said Jason Foster, a former investigative counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and founder of Empower Oversight.

"The government should stop funding those who refuse to be transparent about how they use the money," Foster told the Washington Free Beacon.

Daszak was the only American scientist on the World Health Organization team that investigated the origins of the virus in China earlier this year. While Daszak insisted the virus did not originate from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute, other scientists on the mission have acknowledged that Chinese authorities withheld information that would have aided the investigation.

Daszak’s opposition to the lab-leak theory has earned him praise from Chinese state-run news outlets. The scientist has appeared for multiple interviews with Beijing-controlled propaganda outlet CGTN.

The Defense Department and EcoHealth Alliance did not respond to requests for comment.

For two days in a row, Doreen Geiger joined a handful of others holding signs demanding a forensic audit in front of the Tarrant Regional Water District headquarters. Some cars slowed. Some honked.

Each day, they went inside the building to reiterate this demand as the board considered setting its tax rate and other matters.

“My comments today are not about the tax rate, but they are about money,” Geiger told the board during the public comment portion of the meeting. “TRWD does need an audit done every year like most other organizations have. This year, in particular, it needs a forensic audit so this board can make sure the new general manager makes all the needed changes to put a stop to waste and fraudulent spending of taxpayers’ money.”

Geiger felt this was necessary after the district’s previous general manager almost retired with what amounted to an additional year’s salary without the full board’s approval.

A statewide public integrity unit based out of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office used to investigate and prosecute cases such as the one Geiger is protesting at the water district.

Since the Texas Rangers took over that responsibility in 2015, 564 public integrity and corruption investigations have resulted in 67 prosecutions, according to a Texas Observer analysis.

Experts interviewed by the Austin-based publication said that this is because the Rangers often have to get permission from a local DA before they can launch a probe. The experts said some local DAs knew the accused and shielded them.

Only three of the 564 public integrity cases the Texas Rangers investigated involved officials from Tarrant County.

Because the Tarrant cases did not result in prosecutions, there are few public details about them.

Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson, who took office in in 2015, but after the change, said she has never turned away the Texas Rangers. Her office has a white collar/public integrity team that accepts cases from the Rangers and other law enforcement agencies. The team has been around since the 1980s and consists of three attorneys, three investigators and two financial analysts. It has about 211 pending cases, 15 of which involve a current or former elected official or person in a place of public trust….

US Treasury Department authorizes aid transactions with the Taliban

The US Treasury Department has permitted the export of food, medicine, and vital humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. Though the Taliban will be handling this aid, the group remains heavily sanctioned.

“The Treasury is committed to facilitating the flow of humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and other activities that support their basic human needs,” Andrea Gacki, director of the department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, said in a statement on Friday.

Though US sanctions on the Taliban remain in place, the department released two licenses on Friday, with the first authorizing the US government, UN, and multiple NGOs to deliver humanitarian aid to Afghanistan via the country’s new Taliban government, the members of which the US spent 20 years fighting.

The second license authorizes aid organizations and individuals to export food, animal feed, medicine, and medical devices to Afghanistan, where the US predicts that, by next year, 97% of the population may fall below the poverty line.

While the licenses will allow the flow of aid to resume, the Taliban remains a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group, and several of its ministers are sanctioned by both the US and UN Security Council. One senior official, Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, the leader of the feared Haqqani network, is wanted by the FBI, which is offering a reward of $5 million for information leading to his capture. The State Department, through its Rewards For Justice Program, is offering $10 million.

The US, along with much of the international community, has not yet formally recognized the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate government. Secretary of State Tony Blinken referred to the militant group as the “de facto government” of Afghanistan when he appeared before Congress last week, but Washington has insisted that official recognition will depend on the Taliban forming a more moderate and inclusive government than in the past.

US sanctions are currently preventing billions of dollars of Afghanistan’s foreign reserves from falling into Taliban hands. ‘Parent’s worst nightmare’: Brett Callaghan jailed over rape of girl, 12

A man who was jailed today for repeatedly raping a 12-year-old girl during a 9.5 hour ordeal made up an disgraceful lie to police when he was caught.

A man who lured a 12-year-old girl into his car, gave her an ice pipe to smoke and then repeatedly sexually assaulted her will spend at least nine years behind bars.

District Court Judge Robert Sutherland described the girl’s 9.5 hour ordeal as “undoubtedly a parent’s worst nightmare” as he sentenced Brett Callaghan, 39, to prison on Friday afternoon.

The girl was waiting for a friend in Thornleigh about 3.30pm on April 28, 2020, when Callaghan approached and convinced her into his car with the promise of a charger for her phone, which had run out of battery.

She would not be discovered by police until the early hours of the morning, hiding under a blanket at Callaghan’s Dural granny flat after spending several terrifying hours in his grasp.

“I didn’t know she was 13. She looks 19, easy,” Callaghan told police just before he was arrested.

The girl’s mother told the court in August her daughter had fundamentally changed since she was assaulted, her once “happy, free-spirited child” now serious and afraid.

“Although she has good days here and there, the impact has been catastrophic,” the woman said.

Callaghan claimed in a letter to the judge his life took a downward spiral when his teenage dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer were dashed with a failed drug test.

“I was competing at high levels of national swimming,” the father and former landscaper wrote, explaining he had been set to trial for the Commonwealth Games before testing positive to cannabis and being booted from the team.

“There was pressure to perform … I have gone from an elite athlete to someone with no direction or career prospects,” he wrote.

The girl told Callaghan she was 12 before getting into his car at Thornleigh, Judge Sutherland said.

He then drove her to his parents’ home in Dural, where he lived in the granny flat, and got out a glass pipe and small bag of meth, describing it as “the good stuff” and telling the girl how to smoke it.
