Gen. Mattis just testified in one of the largest court cases in Silicon Valley history

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, a retired U.S. Marine Corps general, resurfaced on Wednesday to testify in the Silicon Valley fraud case against Elizabeth Holmes and her blood-testing tech startup, Theranos.

During the trial, Mattis testified that he had been interested in Theranos’ claimed technological breakthrough, which hoped would help save troops on the battlefield, the Associated Press reported.

Mattis ultimately joined Theranos’ board of directors in 2013, just a few months after retiring from the Marines after serving as a four-star general. He personally invested $85,000 of his own money into the start-up.

According to evidence submitted by Holmes’ lawyers, Theranos paid Mattis a $150,000 annual salary as a board member. Mattis testified he told Holmes he would serve on the company’s board for free because “I believe in what you are doing.”

Emails dating as far back as 2011, which were presented during the trial showed Mattis repeatedly referred to Holmes, then 27, as “young Elizabeth.” During the trial, Mattis said Holmes impressed him for being “sharp, articulate, committed.”

In August 2017, Holmes said she added Mattis to the Theranos board because “He’s one of the most brilliant strategists I’ve ever met.”

Mattis said that while he was impressed by Holmes “that didn’t take the place for having the device prove itself.”

In a 2011 email, Mattis said he wanted to get Theranos devices on military vessels on a trial basis

Theranos billed its lab technology as having the ability to perform more than 240 tests, ranging from cholesterol to cancer screenings, from just a few drops of blood.

Mattis ultimately left Theranos’ board in 2016, a year after the Wall Street Journal reported the company’s technology could not handle the wide range of blood tests it said it could and alleged the accuracy of those tests remained in doubt.

“There became a point where I didn’t know what to believe about Theranos anymore,” Mattis said, though he could not say specifically when he began to lose faith in Holmes.

CNN reported Holmes faces a dozen federal fraud and conspiracy charges and faces up to 20 years in prison if she is convicted.

Mattis is one of several high-profile investors in the start-up. Other investors have included former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Wells Fargo Bank CEO Richard Kovacevich, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and the Walton family, which founded Wal-Mart. Prosecutors have listed some of these high-profile figures as potential witnesses they may call upon during the trial.

Mattis is the seventh overall witness to be called to the stand in the case.

What is CRISPR-Cas9?

CRISPR-Cas9 is a unique technology that enables geneticists and medical researchers to edit parts of the genome? by removing, adding or altering sections of the DNA? sequence.

The CRISPR-Cas9 system consists of two key molecules that introduce a change (mutation?) into the DNA. These are:

an enzyme? called Cas9. This acts as a pair of ‘molecular scissors’ that can cut the two strands of DNA at a specific location in the genome so that bits of DNA can then be added or removed.

a piece of RNA? called guide RNA (gRNA). This consists of a small piece of pre-designed RNA sequence (about 20 bases long) located within a longer RNA scaffold. The scaffold part binds to DNA and the pre-designed sequence ‘guides’ Cas9 to the right part of the genome. This makes sure that the Cas9 enzyme cuts at the right point in the genome.

The guide RNA is designed to find and bind to a specific sequence in the DNA. The guide RNA has RNA bases? that are complementary? to those of the target DNA sequence in the genome. This means that, at least in theory, the guide RNA will only bind to the target sequence and no other regions of the genome.

The Cas9 follows the guide RNA to the same location in the DNA sequence and makes a cut across both strands of the DNA.

At this stage the cell? recognises that the DNA is damaged and tries to repair it.

Scientists can use the DNA repair machinery to introduce changes to one or more genes? in the genome of a cell of interest.

How was it developed?

Some bacteria? have a similar, built-in, gene editing system to the CRISPR-Cas9 system that they use to respond to invading pathogens? like viruses,? much like an immune system.

Using CRISPR the bacteria snip out parts of the virus DNA and keep a bit of it behind to help them recognise and defend against the virus next time it attacks.

Scientists adapted this system so that it could be used in other cells from animals, including mice and humans.

Prosecutors Seeking Sex Trafficking Victims Who Were Advertised On Website That Replaced Backpage

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas is seeking individuals who were trafficked on CityXGuide, a commercial sex website shut down by the federal government in June 2020, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Prerak Shah.

Prosecutors are requesting that victims — who are afforded rights under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (CRVA) and may be eligible for restitution — visit https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/united-states-v-wilhan-martono-cityxguide to submit their information.

The U.S. Attorney’s questionnaire will allow victims to outline any physical or mental health injuries they sustained as a result of human trafficking (information that is critically important to request court-ordered victim compensation at sentencing) and to share their thoughts on the sentence the judge should impose CityXGuide owner Wilhan Martono.

Mr. Martono, 47, was arrested on June 19, 2020, the same day his websites were seized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 24, 2021 to one count of promotion of prostitution and reckless disregard of sex trafficking and one count of conspiracy to engage in interstate transportation in aid of racketeering enterprises – facilitating prostitution. His plea is the first ever entered under the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), a 2018 law that allows the federal government to prosecute websites that facilitate sex trafficking.

In plea papers, Mr. Martono admitted that he created, owned, and operated CityXGuide and a suite of related websites. He registered the domain names for several of the sites on April 8, 2018 — just one day after the feds shut down Backpage.com, then the internet’s leading source of commercial sex advertisements. Like Backpage, Mr. Martono’s sites allowed users, including traffickers, to post hundreds of thousands of commercial sex advertisements worldwide.

Mr. Martono admitted that he turned a blind eye to the illegal sex trafficking occurring on CityXGuide. Despite receiving numerous emails from federal, state, and local law enforcement informing him that CityXGuide and its companion websites were being used to facilitate sex trafficking and child exploitation, he continued to operate those sites in the United States and around the world. The Ottawa Hospital is the second Ottawa hospital to implement a mandatory vaccination policy for visitors.

As of Sept. 22, CHEO is requiring all visitors to be fully vaccinated to enter the facility. All CHEO entrance screens include a question about vaccination status.

Kingston’s research and teaching hospital has placed 136 employees on two-week, unpaid leave for failing to comply with the hospital's new COVID-19 vaccination policy.

The new policy at Kingston Health Sciences Centre requires all staff, physicians and learners to provide proof of having received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, or a documented medical reason for not being vaccinated, by Wednesday.

Ninety-five per cent of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre's employees have met the first dose requirement, and fewer than 10 employees have been granted a medical exemption.

"As of September 22, 136 KHSC employees are in non-compliance with our immunization policy and have been placed on an unpaid two-week administrative leave," said KHSC in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

"Following those two weeks, further disciplinary may be taken, up to and including termination, if those individuals cannot show proof of vaccination or cannot produce a valid medical exemption."

The Kingston Health Sciences Centre did not say how many of the 136 employees suspended are nurses or physicians.

KHSC COVID-19 incident commander Elizabeth Bardon says the policy to suspend without pay is necessary to avoid an outbreak like the Kingston General Hospital faced earlier this summer.

“Having staff who have to go off work because they’ve been exposed, or worse are bringing COVID in and exposing their patients and our co-workers is just not something that we feel we can manage during COVID, and so this the way we’re going as many other hospitals in the province are," said Bardon on Thursday afternoon.

Bardon says the employees placed on leave will have two weeks to show their proof of vaccination or provide a medical exemption. Those who don't comply could be terminated.

"We have informed people that they will go into a disciplinary stream for failing to abide by a policy. And we will work out the next steps with our people services team over the next couple of weeks," said Bardon.

There are 5,000 employees at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre, including nurses and doctor.

The Kingston Health Sciences Centre includes Kingston General Hospital, the Hotel Dieu Hospital and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

"As an organization, we strongly believe that vaccination is the top preventive strategy against COVID-19, in conjunction with screening, wearing personal protective equipment such as masks, and physical distancing," said KHSC.

"As health-care providers, we have an ethical and professional obligation to take all necessary steps to keep our patients, families and each other safe from COVID-19."
