Israel imposes Covid restrictions after highest daily increase in Covid cases since January

New Covid restrictions requiring a health pass to access public spaces came into effect across Israel on Wednesday, amid a spike in cases that saw the country report its highest daily increase in infections since January.

Afghanistan’s embassy in Tajikistan has demanded that Interpol detain ousted president Ashraf Ghani, accusing him of “stealing” from the Afghan people after he reportedly fled Afghanistan on a helicopter filled with cash.

The Afghan ambassador to Tajikistan said in a press statement on Wednesday that he “demands” the “thieves” who stole from the Afghan people be arrested, including Ghani. The envoy said that he asked the Interpol to pay attention to the case.

The ambassador, Mohammad Zahir Aghbar, insisted that the former Afghan officials, including the ousted president, should be brought to an “international court” so that they could be tried and “the people’s wealth and finances can be returned.” The envoy said that the president and some other officials “stole” from Afghanistan’s treasury.

Ghani left Afghanistan as the Taliban closed in on the capital last weekend, and later posted on Facebook to explain that he left his presidential post in an effort to thwart the “massacring” of civilians and avoid heavy bloodshed in Kabul.

According to the Russian Embassy in Afghanistan, Ghani arrived at the Kabul airport with several cars laden with cash and valuables. On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed that the ousted Afghan president and his family were allowed into the country “on humanitarian grounds.”

The Afghan embassy in Tajikistan also stated that First Vice President Amrullah Saleh was “officially the acting president” after Ghani’s “escape” from Afghanistan. The embassy also posted photographs of Ghani’s framed image being replaced with that of Saleh.

Saleh declared himself Afghanistan’s new, legitimate leader in a tweet on Tuesday. He also said he was currently in the country and vowed not to give in to the Taliban militants, whom he described as “terrorists” and said he would not work with the Islamist regime.

It is unclear if Saleh wields any real power on the ground, despite his declarations on Twitter, since the Taliban is now in firm control of all major cities, including Kabul.

BlackBerry stayed quiet for months on software backdoor that could let hackers CRIPPLE 200mn cars & hospital ventilators – reports

BlackBerry reportedly tried to cover up a critical software flaw that could potentially allow hackers to target nearly 200 million cars and sensitive hospital devices like ventilators – months after the vulnerability was spotted.

On Tuesday, the Canadian tech firm finally issued an alert that widely-used versions of one of its premier products – an old operating system called QNX – were affected by the flaw called ‘BadAlloc’. Other tech companies had gone public with their own warnings about the issue in May.

The same day, the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) announced the company’s QNX Real Time Operating System (RTOS) could be compromised by “malicious actor(s).”

Due to the “wide range of products” using the software, the alert warned that the loss of “highly sensitive systems” posed a “risk to the nation’s critical functions.”

The operating system is also embedded in train controls, factory automation systems, medical robots, hydroelectric plants and even the International Space Station’s “mission-critical command and data handling subsystem.” The CISA urged “critical infrastructure organizations” to patch their products immediately.

Despite the ominous warning and potential danger, however, both the CISA and BlackBerry had apparently sat on the info for months while privately discussing how best to disclose the information.

A Politico report cites two unnamed sources “familiar with [these] discussions” as claiming the company had first denied the problem existed and then “resisted making a public announcement.”

Even after the CISA had confirmed its products were impacted, the sources said BlackBerry officials only acknowledged the problem after months of official prodding.

But the company told the agency it would “reach out privately” to its direct customers and warn them – instead of making a public alert.

“Their initial thought was that they were going to do a private advisory,” a CISA employee told Politico, adding that BlackBerry “realized that there was more benefit to being public” over time.

The outlet accessed a CISA presentation that showed many BlackBerry customers would not come to know about the potential danger unless informed by the company, the government or the various equipment manufacturers that embedded the RTOS in their devices.

The CISA apparently even noted that the US Defense Department was helping to find “acceptable timing” for BlackBerry’s announcement. However, the outlet noted that the company only agreed to issue a public statement “a few weeks ago.”

New Mexico Sets New Mask Mandate, COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements

New Mexico is reinstating a statewide mask mandate for all public indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) announced on Tuesday.

The new rule, issued by Acting Health Secretary David R. Scrase, applies to everyone in the state aged 2 and older. Masks have to be worn in all indoor public settings—except when eating or drinking, according to a statement issued by the governor’s office.

“We all have a role to play. No one wants to go backward. No one wants to see our recovery endangered by another—and preventable—surge of serious illness,” said Grisham. “So mask up indoors to stop the spread,” she added.

Prior to the mandate, officials only recommended vaccinated individuals to continue wearing a mask in indoor spaces, while those not vaccinated were required to wear them in indoor public settings.

In addition, Grisham’s office also announced that more people will be mandated to get a COVID-19 vaccine, such as workers at hospitals, nursing homes, juvenile justice facilities, among other places.

“Given the slowing of vaccination rates since a peak several months ago … the state will issue a requirement for all workers in certain medical close-contact congregate settings—including hospitals, nursing homes, juvenile justice facilities, rehabilitation facilities, state correctional facilities and more—to be vaccinated against COVID-19,” the statement reads.

All staff at private, public, and charter schools in the state are also required to get either vaccinated or submit to weekly testing, it added.

The Democratic governor’s latest public order was announced as health officials said COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state have risen to a 6-month high as of Aug. 16 and some state facilities have reached, or exceeded 100 percent capacity.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, 75 percent of New Mexicans aged 18 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 66 percent of the state’s population over 18 has been fully vaccinated.
