North Korea's Arsenal Has Grown Rapidly. Here's What's in It.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea test-launched what it called a newly developed tactical guided missile ​Thursday, violating international sanctions.

It was the country’s first ballistic missile test in a year and its first provocation to the Biden administration, prompting President Joe Biden to warn that there will be “responses” if North Korea continues to escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

A senior North Korean official, Ri Pyong Chol, replied defiantly Saturday, warning that if the United States keeps making “thoughtless remarks without thinking of the consequences, it may be faced with something that is not good.”

The United States has tried both sanctions and dialogue to persuade North Korea to ​give up its ​nuclear ​weapons programs.

Neither has worked.

Instead, North Korea​ has rapidly expanded its nuclear program and modernized its missile fleet under Kim Jong Un, the country’s young leader. The expansion of the arsenal is a growing threat to the United States and allies​ in the region. ​Here’s what’s in it.

There are nuclear warheads and more.

North Korea’s ballistic missiles can carry nuclear warheads, and the country conducted six increasingly sophisticated underground nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017. The last four of them happened under Kim.

Its last and most powerful nuclear test was conducted in September 2017, when North Korea claimed to have detonated ​a thermonuclear​, or hydrogen, bomb. ​Estimates of the device’s explosive power ranged from 50 to 300 kilotons.

A mere 100 kilotons would make the test six times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.​

North Korea has extracted plutonium, an atomic bomb fuel, from its Soviet-designed nuclear reactor in Yongbyon, north of Pyongyang. It also runs centrifuges to produce weapons-grade enriched uranium, another bomb fuel.

As of January 2020, North Korea had 30 to 40 nuclear warheads and could produce enough fissile material for six or seven bombs a year, according to an estimate by the Arms Control Association.

Although the world is preoccupied with the North’s nuclear weapons, the country has also stockpiled thousands of tons of chemical and biological​ weapons​ ​agents​ that it can deliver with its missiles​​. When Kim’s estranged half brother, Kim Jong Nam, was assassinated in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, North Korea ​used the internationally banned VX nerve agent in the operation.

​Its missiles can fly longer ranges.

In 2017, North Korea made big strides in its weapons capabilities.

That year, the country fired its intermediate-range ballistic missile, Hwasong-12, over Japan and threatened an “enveloping” strike around the U.S. territory of Guam. It also test-fired Hwasong-14 and Hwasong-15, the country’s first intercontinental ballistic missiles.

By the end of the year, Kim claimed that his country had the ability to launch a nuclear strike against the continental United States.

After 2017, Kim stopped testing nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, but threatened to end his moratorium when talks with President Donald Trump collapsed in 2019.

Wow. If this is correct, VAERS is tens of thousands of reports behind.

The reason I find this theory plausible is that the European database now has more than 100,000 reports for the @pfizer

vaccine alone - even though it has been given far more in the US.

MIT scientists have found that wind enhances St. Elmo's Fire on the ground, but tames it in the air.

The "corona discharge" skims harmlessly over airplanes, trees, and tall buildings.

A controlled field could protect airplanes from much more destructive lightning strikes.

St. Elmo’s Fire may have been a career hazard, but the real St. Elmo’s Fire could help cushion airplanes from dangerous lightning strikes during flights. In new research, scientists from MIT show the special kind of electrical charge can be used to place a protective and preemptive charge around airplanes in flight, and wind affects flying versus grounded vehicles in opposite ways.

St. Elmo’s Fire is an age-old weather phenomenon first observed thousands of years ago and eventually named for the patron saint of sailors, St. Erasmus of Formia. Its technical name is corona discharge, and, as Britannica explains with surprising poetry, it appears as “luminosity accompanying brushlike discharges of atmospheric electricity.” It’s related to lightning, and both are plasmas, which in this case means electricity accumulates and travels rapidly along a glowing cloud of ionized air.

During the right storm conditions, St. Elmo’s Fire is finally catalyzed into glowing strands of surface quasi-lightning because items like airplane wings or church steeples point into and disrupt an ionized cloud. This is when the strands appear to crawl and drift along the surface like self-adhesive lightning. The blue-purple color is due to the composition of our atmosphere, the same way different gases make different “neon” light colors.

The charge and discharge is often harmless, although more so in the sailing-ship days before anything was electrical on board. In 1980, St. Elmo’s Fire knocked out the telephone lines and weather radar in the Buffalo, New York region during a severe storm. Researchers grew especially concerned when they learned that windy conditions intensified St. Elmo’s Fire on grounded objects like buildings and trees. Anyone who’s seen a tree with lightning damage knows the “grounding” doesn’t do trees any big favors.

But now, scientists have found that windy conditions lessen the effect of St. Elmo’s Fire on ungrounded objects—primarily airplanes. In MIT’s now-decommissioned wind tunnel, the scientists fitted an artificial airplane wing and an artificial source of corona discharge. What explains the different results for grounded and ungrounded items?

MIT explains in a statement:

“In both cases, the wind is blowing away the positive ions generated by the corona, leaving behind a stronger field in the surrounding air. For ungrounded structures, however, because they are electrically isolated, they become more negatively charged. This results in a weakening of the positive corona discharge.”…

In 2016, the organization received $890,000, while, in 2018, it garnered another $410,000. This was the only one of the three Jesuit institutions to recognize the Soros Foundations as a “partner.”

…When WikiLeaks revealed the emails of the Democratic National Committee and various allied groups in advance of the 2016 presidential election, it found that the president of Voices for Progress, Sandy Newman, conspired in 2012 with John Podesta of the Soros-funded Center for American Progress to promote contraception as a “revolution” to overthrow the “middle ages dictatorship” of the Catholic Church.

Podesta wrote, “We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good [CACG] to organize for a moment like this.” According to its Facebook page, “Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good promote the social justice mission of Pope Francis and the Catholic Church in U.S. politics, media and culture.”

CACG was prominent in pushing for national health care legislation that became known as Obamacare, which Catholic bishops criticized for lacking conscience provisions to prevent Catholic hospitals from performing abortions.

Also, CACG was one of some 16 others to receive $4.5 million in Soros funds. Podesta served as chief of staff in the Clinton administration and, later, as a counselor in the Obama administration.

US Makes Large Military Hardware Delivery To Ukraine's Army After Biden Pledged "Crimea is Ukraine"

Russian state sources are alleging that Washington under the Biden administration is ramping up military aid to Ukraine after local media observed a US cargo ship delivering 350 tonnes of military equipment - including tactical vehicles - to Ukraine's Odessa port.

Local media reported the delivery which began late Wednesday and which is said to still be in process Friday. Ukraine's Dumskaya news agency said the American vessel carried at least 35 US military humvees for Ukrainian national forces.

"Dry-cargo ship Ocean Glory under the American flag entered the port of Odessa last night," the report indicated.

"The bulk carrier Ocean Glory specializes in military transportation. Built in 2015, length 171 meters, width 25 meters, deadweight about 20 thousand tons," it added according to a translation.

The delivery follows last year's US DoD announcement of an additional $125 million military assistance package for Ukraine (unveiled in March) which involves equipment, training, and military advisory support, with an additional $150 million waiting for Congressional and Pentagon approval.

Iran & China ink 25-year strategic partnership accord as both nations face US pressure

A cooperation deal between Iran and China covering a quarter of a century has been signed in Tehran, furthering Iran’s role in the Chinese global infrastructure initiative. Both nations are being targeted by US sanctions.

The landmark document was signed during a televised ceremony by visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif. The document was described by the Iranian side as “a complete roadmap with strategic political and economic clauses covering trade, economic and transportation cooperation.”

The Chinese minister hailed Iran’s independence of foreign policy, according to Iranian media, saying that it “is not like some countries that change their position with one phone call.”

Wang arrived in Iran on Friday for a series of meetings with top Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani and Ali Larijani, the ex-speaker of the parliament and a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The visit marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Beijing and is part of a larger tour across the Middle East by the top Chinese diplomat.

The Sino-Iranian Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was first announced in January 2016 during a visit to Tehran by Chinese President Xi Jinping. In another Facebook missive from last July, Torres-Estrada shared a meme of the then-president featuring quotes from former Trump officials deeming him “a f**king moron,”“an idiot surrounded by clowns” and “a dope,” with the newly-hired official adding a caption: “I just have to post this…”

Detractors online took aim at both Torres-Estrada’s apparent partisanship, as well as the notion that a military force meant to tap only the most elite and qualified troops would now recruit based on “inclusion,” rather than merit.

“Quiet professionals filling quotas and purifying the ideology to make sure SOF [Special Operations Force] is palatable to a political party?” one critic asked. “I thought SOF just recruited the biggest, most athletic, baddest, most intelligent soldiers.”
