Been visiting with many friends over the past few days. Been trying to answer some of their questions but am struggling with some as well as some of my own.

Has anyone dug on the damage at the capitol? What few videos I’ve seen there doesn’t look like much. A few broken windows. As far as theft, Pelosi’s laptop apparently is missing but her podium was recovered. Did the podium even make it out of the building? I/we advocate no vandalism or theft. But I just thought it would be interesting to know of any actual damage. I mean, they were back in session in less than 12 hrs right?

I’m surprised there were any videos at all in or around the capitol. Many probably were there (elipse to capitol) since 5am. It was cold. How did anyone’s smart phone still have any battery left?

Another theory I have is if one were in the crowd standing outside, dead phone, cold, you see from a distance the police opening the gate, you’d be like, hey, let’s go in and get warmed up and see what’s going on? Maybe we can listen and watch the counts and debate since my phone is dead?

Vaccine scepticism may already be impacting healthcare in parts of Germany. On Tuesday, Bodo Ramelow, head of the state of Thuringia, cited one clinic in the city of Eisenach that stopped taking Covid-19 patients — not because it was short on hospital beds, but because 100 employees were themselves sick or in quarantine.

“This leads to a real problem, because we want to make sure that these people, who work so very close to the virus, have the highest protection,” Mr Ramelow told MDR television. “I plead to everyone to go get it.”

Germany, which is struggling to contain a second surge in Covid-19 infections, has imposed no legal requirement to take the vaccine, though some lawyers specialising in labour rights say medics could potentially face dismissal should their employers argue they were posing a health risk to patients.

In Italy, authorities are investigating 13 doctors accused of anti-vaccine propaganda or playing down the severity of the virus.

“I am perplexed when I hear of fellow doctors or nurses reluctant to get the vaccine,” said Pierpaolo Sileri, Italy’s deputy health minister. “I can understand it regarding a member of the public who perhaps does not have the scientific understanding, but frankly, I think that those doctors and nurses, if they still have doubts after seeing everything that’s happened, are probably in the wrong job.”

Markus Söder, head of Germany’s state of Bavaria, said on Tuesday that a public campaign was needed “to drum up support, not only for more vaccines, but also willingness to accept this vaccine. This will be a subject of tense debate.”

The latest polls on vaccine acceptance however, suggest that the public is not growing more confident. In the spring, 79 per cent of respondents to Germany’s University of Erfurt survey were willing to be vaccinated, while in September that number had dropped to 56 per cent. Last month, a YouGov poll suggested 32 per cent of Germans were immediately willing to be inoculated, while another 33 per cent wanted to see how the first round of vaccination went.

In France, amid a slow rollout of the vaccination campaign, only 40 per cent of French people polled by Ipsos last week said they planned to be vaccinated, down from 54 per cent in October and 59 per cent in August.

Despite the wariness, Dr Janssens said he believed the tide will turn among medics after the first round. “I am hopeful then others will follow,” he said. “But it’s a very important signal that we need to give these people information now.”

Iranian-Flagged Ship Arrives in Venezuela Again Despite US Pressure, Tracking Data Suggests

Venezuela and Iran, two nations which have been heavily targeted by US sanctions, have maintained their close cooperation in the fuel sector. Tehran has been sending ships to the South American nation to bring gasoline supplies or load them with Venezuelan crude for future exports.

An Iranian-flagged ship made its way to the Venezuelan port of La Guaira this week, Reuters reported, citing vessel tracking data provided by Refinitiv Eikon analytical firm.

The Golsan, a cargo ship which had reportedly entered port on Thursday, was spotted leaving Iran in November. However, it remains unclear what is on board the vessel, which is owned by Mosakhar Darya Shipping Co.

The information was not confirmed by Venezuela’s ministry of information when approached by the media.

Back in July, the Golsan came to Venezuela from Iran loaded with food in a bid to supply the country’s first Iranian supermarket. It later made its way back to the Republic with alumina powder on board, a substance used to produce aluminium metal.

The two countries, both members of OPEC, have been in close commercial cooperation over the past year. Iran has been sending its fuel-loaded tankers to Venezuela in exchange for gold and also to load them with Venezuelan crude oil, for shipment to other countries.

In December, it was reported that National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) had sent a Palau-flagged vessel to Jose, a Venezuelan port, to load it with 1.9 mln bbl of oil from Venezuela's state-owned PdVSA that was designated as a shipper in the transaction.

Both Iran and Venezuela have been under extreme sanctions pressure from Washington. In January 2019, the US Treasury Department subjected PdVSA to sanctions, effectively prohibiting American firms from engaging in transitions with the company.

In 2020, Washington punished Russia’s Rosneft Oil Company and four other foreign shippers for conducting business with the oil giant. But Iran, which has long been a target of American economic pressure and an arms embargo, has only been ramping up ties with Venezuela, in defiance of US sanctions.
