Fast-Moving Wildfire Threatens Major Marine Corps Base Near San Diego

A major Marine Corps base in southern California is under emergency evacuation orders as a wildfire has grown out of control and is now encroaching on the area.

Marine base Camp Pendleton, which is home to the 1st Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force, infantry training schools and many other key units, is under threat by the Creek Fire.

The fast-moving brush fire resulted in the overnight emergency evacuation of about 7,000 residents. The fire is said to be burning entirely on Camp Pendleton, which given its vast mountainous training areas includes a lot of brush areas.

The fire has scorched some 3,000 acres of the base's about 125,000 total acres. The base lies along the coastline in northwestern San Diego County.

The fire is said to be at least 35% contained as of Thursday morning.

1000s Of Trucks Still Stranded In UK As French COVID-Testing Rules Spark "Chaos"

France announced the reopening of its borders with the UK late on Tuesday, ending a two-day closure prompted by fears of a fast-spreading coronavirus mutation in England.

As a result of the border shut down, thousands of truck drivers remain stranded in the UK, while France's new public health measures require drivers to be tested before entering the country.

France and Britain agreed on a rapid PCR (polymerase chain reaction) COVID-19 test that takes about 30 minutes, but that doesn't necessarily mean the thousands of stranded truck drivers waiting to cross the channel will be resolved in a day's time.

Despite the reopening of the borders, FT notes the backlog of trucks on Wednesday was in the thousands.

The situation was chaotic at the Port of Dover entrance, which was blocked throughout much of Wednesday by lorry drivers unable to board ferries because they did not have the tests demanded by the French government.

The UK government set up the main testing operation 20 miles away from Dover at Kent's Manston airport, a disused facility where most of the stranded lorries were being held. -FT

Drivers parked their trucks at Manston International Airport this week as they waited for coronavirus testing.

While BBC News said 3,000 trucks were in holding areas, the Department for Transport said the figure could be upwards of 5,000 trucks waiting to cross the English Channel.

According to the Road Haulage Association, the estimate could be as high as 10,000.

Manston Airport, which is becoming a lorry park for Dover, is where Brexit and UKIP began. The party took control of Thanet council in 2015 - a major foothold - after the airport was shut.

The transport department told the haulage industry that it has the capacity at the moment to test 300 drivers per hour, and the backlog could be cleared up in the coming days.

Testing of the drivers is so massive that the UK government called in the military.

"This is a mammoth task and clearing the backlog will take time and patience," said transport secretary Grant Shapps.

Even as the Channel Tunnel between the UK and France reopened early Wednesday morning, automobiles started flowing through, but it wasn't until the afternoon when truck volumes started to increase.

"It's only late this afternoon that volumes have picked up significantly," Getlink, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel, said.

Getlink expects freight volume through the tunnel will rise as trains will operate through the holiday session to reduce the backlog.

The chaotic situation at the Channel Tunnel has not been limited to just the UK side.

Weeks ago, we reported backlogs and other delays formed in France as companies rushed goods into the UK before Britain leaves the European Union Customs Union on Jan. 1.

Supply chains in some of Europe's largest economies are a complete mess at the moment, aiding in the view that a robust economic recovery is nowhere to be found.

At some point this year (for me it was March 12) life began feeling like a dystopian novel of your choice.

Well, now I have another piece of evidence to add to the mile-high pile of fishy mess. The World Health Organization, for reasons unknown, has suddenly changed its definition of a core conception of immunology: herd immunity. Its discovery was one of the major achievements of 20th century science, gradually emerging in the 1920s and then becoming ever more refined throughout the 20th century.

Herd immunity is a fascinating observation that you can trace to biological reality or statistical probability theory, whichever you prefer. (It is certainly not a “strategy” so ignore any media source that describes it that way.) Herd immunity speaks directly, and with explanatory power, to the empirical observation that respiratory viruses are either widespread and mostly mild (common cold) or very severe and short-lived (Ebola).

Why is this? The reason is that when a virus kills its host, it cannot migrate. The more aggressively it does this, the less it spreads. If the virus doesn’t kill its host, it can hop to others through all the usual means. When you get a virus and fight it off, your immune system encodes that information in a way that builds immunity to it. When it happens to enough people (and each case is different so we can’t put a clear number on it) the virus loses its pandemic quality and becomes endemic, which is to say predictable and manageable. Each new generation incorporates that information through more exposure.

This is what one would call Virology/Immunology 101. It’s what you read in every textbook. It’s been taught in 9th grade cell biology for probably 80 years. Observing the operations of this evolutionary phenomenon is pretty wonderful because it increases one’s respect for the way in which human biology has adapted to the presence of pathogens without absolutely freaking out.

Brexit Deal Signed: EU Boasts of a ‘Good Deal’ In Their Interest

The Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union concluded on Thursday, Christmas Eve, with the EU’s Ursula von der Leyen calling a press conference and boasting the EU got a “good deal” out of the years of negotiations.

Speaking from Downing Street on Christmas Eve, Prime Minister Johnson announced the agreement of what he terms a “comprehensive, Canada-style free-trade deal” — an agreement that Mr Johnson has been seeking since the beginning of negotiations, which the European Union had said was impossible to strike.

“I’m very pleased to tell you that we have completed the biggest trade deal yet, worth £660 billion a year,” he said, continuing that the deal would protect British jobs by allowing “UK goods to be sold without tariffs and without quotas in the EU market, which will if anything allow our companies to do even more business with our European friends.”

Mr Johnson implied that the deal, which he said was 500 pages long — not 2,000 as previously claimed — and which as yet must be passed in the House of Commons, fulfils completely the June 23rd, 2016 vote to leave the European Union.

He said: “And yet, what it achieves is something that the people of this country instinctively knew was doable but which they were told was impossible: we’ve taken back control of our laws and our destiny, we’ve taken back control of every jot and tittle of our regulation in a way that is complete and unfettered.”

Johnson continued that “from January 1st, we are outside the Customs Union and outside the Single Market,” pledging that “British laws will be made solely by the British parliament, interpreted by UK judges sitting in UK courts, and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice will come to an end.”

“We will be able to set our own standards,” the prime minister added. “We will be able to decide how and where we will stimulate new jobs and new hope with freeports, new green industrial zones.”

Much of the obstruction on the agreement of a new deal with the bloc hinged on the EU’s demands for continued, permanent access to Britain’s lucrative fishing waters. Mr Johnson said that the UK will regain full control of her waters, after some five-a-half-years of what appears to be another transition period for European fishermen.

Mexican Border State Police Officer Caught Leading Gulf Cartel Cell

Last week in General Bravo, Nuevo Leon, state police officers arrested one of their own during an operation targeting cartel cells, U.S. law enforcement sources operating in Mexico revealed to Breitbart Texas. Authorities were carrying out sweeps in response to a series of high-profile shootouts involving armored vehicles. The gunfights are part of an turf war where the Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) faction of Los Zetas is trying to take territories previously held by the Gulf Cartel.

During one of the sweeps, Nuevo Leon’s Fuerza Civil arrested German Cordero Romo, who identified himself as a high ranking law enforcement official and tried to intimidate the arresting officers by claiming connections with even higher officials. Breitbart Texas confirmed that Cordero Romo is no longer employed with Fuerza Civil, however, it remains unclear when his relationship with the agency ended.

At the time of the arrest, authorities also caught Jose Manuel “El Meny” Vaca Leyva and Ivan Collazo Vaquera who were carrying radios, drugs, and weapons. The group was apparently checking on their lookouts and cells spread out through the northern region of Nuevo Leon.

Following the arrest, the gunmen confirmed information previously published by Breitbart Texas about the Gulf Cartel working to recruit local and state police officers from Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. The gunmen also revealed that the criminal organization switched tactics to keep a lower profile.

Instead of using large 4-door SUVs and luxury vehicles during the day, the Gulf Cartel now drives small work trucks known as “estaquitas” and gunmen wear orange workmen vests to blend with highway cleanup and construction crews.

Former upstate New York politician, 71, is found limping along an Ohio road 23 years after skipping town before jail sentencing for illegally selling guns

A former upstate New York politician who fled before his 1997 sentencing for illegally selling eight handguns has been found 23 years later by police limping down an Ohio street.

William Jones, 71, once the supervisor for the town of Mentz in Cayuga County, has been living the past two decades under a fake identity in Ohio, officials said.

Jones was out on a $20,000 bail when he failed to appear for his sentencing in 1997 after he was convicted of selling eight handguns when his pistol permit was suspended by a County Court judge.

But on Sunday, 23 years later, the long-time fugitive was found by an unassuming police officer in Waverly, Ohio, who stopped to assist a man who was limping down the side of the road, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said.

The officer took the unidentified man - who we now know to be Jones - to a local hospital but he became concerned when he did not have any photo identification to hand. He was also unable to identify himself.

An investigation revealed that the man was William Jones, who was a wanted fugitive out of the state of New York. Jones is now being held at a jail in Butler County, Ohio, to await extradition.

Jones had already served a jail sentence by the time of his disappearance in 1997.

As the Town Supervisor for Mentz in Cayuga County, he was convicted in 1996 of Official Misconduct stemming from his official role. He had failed to pay two highway department workers in October 1996, reports Syracuse.

While awaiting trial in that case, Jones went rogue for a month before surrendering himself to authorities.

He was eventually sentenced to one year in the Cayuga County Jail and served eight months.

After this first conviction, his pistol permit was suspended by County Court Judge Peter Cornings. But in 1997, he refused to relinquish his permit and eight handguns. He instead sold the guns and was subsequently charged.

He then went on the run after failing to appear for his sentencing - only to be found on Monday by an officer, 23 years later.

German nuns accused of enabling child sex abuse by priests

Nuns in the city of Speyer "dragged" children to be sexually abused by priests and politicians, a survivor told a German court. His explosive testimony is the latest abuse scandal to rock the German Catholic Church.

Catholic nuns who ran a former children's home in the German city of Speyer allegedly aided in the sexual abuse of the children who were under their care, according to a newly-surfaced court decision.

The latest scandal came to light after a victim filed a case to claim compensation from the Catholic church, prompting the Darmstadt Social Welfare Court to investigate.

Although the court ruled on the case in May this year, it was not made public until now.

Protestant news agency EPD and Catholic news agency KNA acquired copies of the court's decision, which detailed claims of horrific abuse that children suffered at the hands of clergy members in the 1960s and 1970s.

Nuns were key in aiding the abuse, regularly bringing boys and girls to predatory priests and even receiving money to do so, the man testified in court.

On Thursday, the Bishop of Speyer, Karl-Heinz Wiesemann, went public with the allegations of abuse for the first time in an interview with Catholic magazine Der Pilger. He said that "several" abuse allegations had been filed.

Years of abuse at children's home

The court testimony in the court case stems from a 63-year-old man who lived at the nun-run children's home in Speyer for several years.

Much of the alleged abuse centered on one priest in particular — identified by the Bishop of Speyer as a now-deceased vicar named Rudolf Motzenbäcker.
