“Sweden has gone from being the country with the most infections in Europe to the safest one”

As the rest of Europe and the world remains under the grip of draconian rules and the threat of new lockdowns, Sweden, which allowed its citizens to remain free throughout the entire pandemic, has pretty much declared victory over the coronavirus.

The country now has one of the lowest infection rates on the planet, and it’s difficult not to admire how it has handled the past year, with no strict lockdown or compulsory face mask rules. All businesses, schools and public places remained open in Sweden for the duration.

“Sweden has gone from being the country with the most infections in Europe to the safest one,” Sweden’s senior epidemiologist Dr. Anders Tegnell commented to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“What we see now is that the sustainable policy might be slower in getting results, but it will get results eventually,” Tegnell clarified.

“And then we also hope that the result will be more stable,” he added.

Tegnell previously warned that encouraging people to wear face masks is “very dangerous” because it gives a false sense of security but does not effectively stem the spread of the virus.

“The findings that have been produced through face masks are astonishingly weak, even though so many people around the world wear them,” Tengell has urged.

Last week, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control confirmed Sweden’s drop in infection rate, with only 12 cases per million, compared to 18 in neighbouring Denmark and 14 in nearby Norway.

At the peak of the Sweden’s outbreak, it was seeing 108 new infections per million people, as it pursued a “herd immunity” strategy.

The figures also show that out of 2500 randomly selected and tested people in Sweden, none tested positive, compared to 0.9 percent positive in April, and 0.3 percent in May.

“We interpret this as meaning there is not currently a widespread infection among people who do not have symptoms,” said Karin Tegmark, deputy head of the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

When compared to the rest of Europe, Sweden’s death rate sits somewhere in the middle. However, officials are confident that playing the long game will see this improve drastically.

Microsoft News used a “good news” tag for the report, which said that as the United States “continues to confront the toxic legacy of slavery and Jim Crow,” the women want to create “a tight-knit community for our people to just come and breathe”:

They are calling it Freedom, Georgia, and draw their inspiration fromWakanda, the fictional comic-book country that was the setting for the movie “Black Panther.”

Ashley Scott, a realtor from Stonecrest, Georgia, who was driven to seek therapy by her reaction to the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man jogging in a white neighborhood, said that after several sessions she realized that her problem was 400 years of racial oppression and trauma dating back to the establishment of slavery in North America.

With her friend Renee Walters, an entrepreneur and investor, she founded the Freedom Georgia Initiative, a group of 19 Black families who collectively purchased 96.71 acres of rural land in Toomsboro, a town of a few hundred people in central Georgia, with the intention of developing a self-contained Black community. The space will have small homes for vacation use and will host weddings, retreats and recreational functions, and may eventually evolve into an incorporated, self-sustaining community.

Former Clinton campaign adviser Dick Morris predicted during a Sunday interview that the 2020 presidential election is going to drag out because of mail-in voting and end up being decided by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

As Breitbart reported, Morris told “The Cats Roundtable” host John Catsimatidis that while he believes it will appear that Trump wins in a landslide on Election Night, Democratic officials in swing states will manage in subsequent days to discover millions of mail-in ballots in favor of Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Regarding whether the election’s fallout will lead to civil war, Morris said, “Well, there certainly will be major conflict. I hope there won’t be civil war and it’s serious enough that I don’t take your question metaphorically.”

“The blue state governors are mailing out tens of millions of ballots, and they’re going to be returned with a vote on them, probably for Biden,” Morris continued. “And those people will not go to the polls to vote on Election Day. So what you’re probably looking at is that you’re going to have on election night a report that Trump carried […] all of the potential swing states.”

“And they’ll say that Trump has 330-350 electoral votes and won a landslide,” Morris went on. “And then, day after day, week after week, you’re going to find another million ballots counted here, another half-million there, another quarter of a million in another place. And gradually, these Democratic liberal secretaries of state who are in charge of the election in most of these blue states will say, ‘Oh, well, we’re sorry. It turns out Biden carried Wisconsin, not Trump.'”

Morris foretold that, “Then, the Trump people will sue. But that suit will have to be in state court. The state court judges are largely liberal, largely Democrat. And they are going to say, ‘Oh, we rule in favor of the state: Biden carried it.’ Then … they’ll probably go up to the federal courts. And the U.S. Supreme Court eventually will make the decision. And then the entire election will be in the hands literally of John Roberts. And we’ll see what he’ll do.”

“Dick Morris, this is a serious situation,” Catsimatidis interjected. “Me and you have been in politics for 30, 40 years. We know local politics. Nobody cross-checks mail ballots versus actual voting. There’s not enough people in the country to cross-check the difference.”

Morris, who agreed, said, “The Democrats, certainly if they feel they’re legitimately losing the election, are going to use the excuse of the COVID virus — nobody can come out and vote in person, they claim — and to mail-in ballots, and they’re going to deliberately game the system by sending in millions and millions of mail-in ballots for people that don’t exist or have already voted.”

“And the states will not verify the signatures, because they are under the control of Democrats,” Morris added. “And the courts will validate that process because they’re controlled by Democrats.”

During a Monday press conference on the North Portico of the White House, President Donald Trump predicted the fight over mail-in ballots is going to be “the dirtiest fight of all.”

West Australian iron ore magnate Andrew Forrest's Minderoo Foundation has bought 90 tonnes of medical supplies from Chinese suppliers, which will be flown into Perth to be distributed across the state and then Australia.

Mr Forrest said the foundation put $160 million "on the table" to secure the supplies, which had to be paid for with cash in advance, but the WA government would be buying the goods at cost.

He said a cargo plane was leaving Shanghai on Wednesday, with another due in in Perth on Friday and Saturday.

The Minderoo Foundation had secured 1 million N95-equivalent face masks, 400,000 surgical masks, 2.3 million medical-grade gloves, 100,000 nasal swabs, 200,000 medical coveralls, 10,000 medical goggles, 5000 touchless thermometers and 31 intensive care ventilators.

Mr Forrest said the money had to be put on the table to ensure suppliers they were serious about securing the equipment and to ensure supply lines remained open.

"We've been introduced by very powerful people in China to those suppliers," he said.

"They know there'll be instant repercussions if they don't [provide the supplies]."

The billionaire said China had been "great mates" to Australia.

"You've been our mates and I thank the People's Republic of China for protecting our critical medical orders in the face of intense pressure from other nations," he said.

China's consul-general to WA Dong Zhihua said the process of securing the supplies had been overseen by Chinese Ambassador Cheng Jingye.

"You can't imagine how many technical hurdles they had to overcome," she said.

"This outbreak of COVID-19 has caught us by surprise, which proves once again in a no less than tragic way that all mankind lives in a community of a shared future.

"In the face of the pandemic, to help others is to help oneself.

"The Chinese people will never forget that Mr Andrew Forrest and FMG has given us valuable support and assistance during the most difficult period of China's fight against COVID-19.

Whether it’s bagpipe flame-throwers, spear-wielding umbrellas or sports cars that turn into submarines, everyone has a favourite James Bond spy gadget, courtesy of the ever-resourceful ‘Q’ Branch.

While it has long been assumed that novelist Ian Fleming used an MI6 department as the inspiration for 007’s brilliantly bonkers gadgets — exploding shark capsule, anyone? — credit should actually go to MI9, or ‘Military Intelligence 9’, as revealed in a new book, MI9: A History Of The Secret Service For Escape And Evasion In World War Two, by Helen Fry.

A department so top secret that most people have never even heard of it, it relied heavily on the inventions of a prematurely balding maverick called Christopher Clayton Hutton.

‘Clutty’, as he was known, was a former soldier, airman and journalist, who had been obsessed with escapology and illusions since boyhood.

He was once described as ‘mad and brilliant’, and would have given today’s Q a run for his money when it came to inventiveness.

Set up in 1939 and run by Major Norman Crockatt (later Brigadier) and Clutty, MI9 was responsible for helping airmen and prisoners find their way home from behind enemy lines.

To this end, it supported resistance networks and encouraged a philosophy of ‘escape-mindedness’, drumming into every soldier that it was their duty to try to escape.

A single airman took three months to train at a cost of £15,000, so the War Office needed them back.

In turn, the boffins at MI9 did everything they could to support them, designing and supplying countless gadgets including pencil cameras, daggers hidden in pens, wire saws hidden in shoe laces and playing cards containing maps of Europe.

Clutty, in particular, was relentless in his task. He hired a magician to help devise hidden compartments and built himself an underground bunker in the middle of a field — in the grounds of the MI9 headquarters in Wilton Park, Beaconsfield — so he could work undisturbed.

Such was his disregard for protocol that he was frequently in trouble with the police and authorities for helping himself to Army stocks without permission, and would have given today’s Health and Safety executives multiple coronaries.

But he was a genius.

It was he who persuaded Waddington to adapt their Monopoly sets into escape kits, complete with maps of Europe and compasses. He also helped design the standard issue maps, nearly half a million of which were printed on non-rustling silk with non-running ink, which could be hidden inside a chess piece.

Naturally, it was also Clutty who came up with a compass concealed in a jacket button with reverse screw threads, on the basis that it would never occur to the ever-orderly German mind that something might unscrew the wrong way.

He was right.

And in 1942, every invention was carefully recorded in a large red leather-bound catalogue entitled Per Ardua Libertas — Liberty through Adversity — for the benefit of visiting American intelligence officers.

Of course, unlike 007’s flaming bagpipes and killer umbrella, everything MI9 created was small enough to be hidden inside something else.

Clutty’s gadgets might not have been quite as flamboyant as Bond’s bullet-proof Aston Martin or ski pole gun, but they actually worked.

Of the 35,000 British and Allied troops who escaped and made it to safety during the war, more than half were carrying one of his silk maps, and most were aided by at least one of the following inventions.

A call to pardon Edward Snowden has appeared on President Donald Trump’s Twitter page, courtesy of a presidential retweet of Glenn Greenwald and some creative renaming of the journalist’s account.

Greenwald won a George Polk Award and a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the global mass electronic surveillance by US intelligence, which was based on documents leaked by Edward Snowden in 2013. On Monday, he managed to deliver a call to pardon the whistleblower to the 85.8 million followers of the US President.

It started with CNN national security reporter Ryan Browne lashing out at Trump for suggesting that US military commanders had a vested interest in perpetrating wars and keeping US taxpayer money flowing to defense contractors. Browne called it “an unprecedented public attack” on the Pentagon by a sitting US president only to be confronted by Greenwald, who called him a “drama queen” and said he was obviously wrong…

…This gave the journalist a chance for a bit of advocacy on behalf of his former source. He changed the name of his Twitter account into “Pardon Snowden”. Trump earlier floated the idea of stopping US attempts to prosecute the NSA whistleblower, who currently lives under political asylum in Russia, but never acted on it. Snowden himself apparently appreciated the gesture, wondering if Trump keeping the retweet meant he “made up his mind”.

Greenwald is not the first person to slide some activism into Trump’s feed. Fellow journalist Max Blumenthal used the same trick in June to deliver to the President’s followers a barrage of slogans like “Defund the police”, “Free Julian Assange” and “Free Palestine, Fire Jared.” That exercise was stopped short by Trump un-retweeting his post.

Ohio Gov. DeWine, 5 other governors join first ever bipartisan multi-state coronavirus testing drive

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) announced Tuesday that Ohio is entering into a multi-state purchasing agreement with the Rockefeller Foundation to expand the use of rapid point-of-care tests for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

DeWine joins a bipartisan group of five other governors to form the first coordinated testing strategy in the nation, including Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D), Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R), and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D).

“Over the past week, we have conducted an average of 22,334 COVID-19 tests a day with Ohio’s current testing procedure, but rapid point-of-care tests are faster, simpler, and less expensive,” DeWine said.

By banding together, the states are demonstrating to private manufacturers that there is significant demand to scale up the production of these tests, which deliver results in 15-20 minutes, according to the Rockefeller Foundation. With today’s agreement, the states are in discussions with Becton Dickinson and Quidel—the U.S. manufacturers of antigen tests that have already been authorized by the FDA—to purchase 500,000 tests per state, for a total of three million tests.

More rapid point-of-care testing will help Ohio detect outbreaks sooner with faster turnaround time, expand testing in congregate settings, and make testing more accessible for the most high-risk and hard-hit communities, according to DeWine.

The interstate cooperative purchasing agreement will provide a unique platform to purchase tests and associated supplies in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. In addition, the states will coordinate on policies and protocols regarding rapid antigen testing technology.

“Expanding the use of this testing will serve as an important screening tool and a critical addition to our plan to limit the spread of COVID-19,” DeWine added. “Time is of the essence, which is why I am pleased to join with my fellow governors to work together to expand the use of rapid, point-of-care antigen tests in order to help to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our states.”

'Abducted' protest leader Kolesnikova 'ripped up passport' to prevent deportation from Belarus to Ukraine - conflicting reports

Around 24 hours after she was apparently abducted in broad daylight on the streets of Minsk, confusion reigned on Tuesday morning about the exact whereabouts and status of Belarusian protest leader Maria Kolesnikova.

Belarusian border guards say she was detained at the Belarus-Ukraine border on Tuesday morning, but that two of her associates, Anton Rodnenkov and Ivan Kravtsov, crossed into Ukraine. Earlier, it had been reported that all three opposition activists had left Belarusian soil. Officials claimed that, after passing the checkpoint, Kolesnikova was "pushed" out of the car, but she did not need medical assistance.

However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kiev reported that Rodnenkov and Kravtsov were forcibly expelled from their homeland. Also, a source apparently told Interfax-Ukraine that Kolesnikova remained in Belarus due to the fact she tore her passport when security services attempted to deport her…
