Hush-hush military satellite ready to ride Pegasus rocket into orbit

June 12, 2021

A small U.S. military satellite named Odyssey, designed and built in less than a year by a secretive new Space Force special projects unit, is set to launch early Sunday from an aircraft off the coast of California aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus rocket.

The mission’s goal is to demonstrate how the military can develop and launch satellites on faster timescales. The small spacecraft, which a Space Force spokesperson said is named Odyssey, is buttoned up inside the nose cone of a Pegasus XL rocket.

The solid-fueled Pegasus launcher is mounted under the belly of an L-1011 carrier jet awaiting takeoff from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The triple-engine aircraft is expected to take off about an hour before launch time, which the Space Force said is set for 4:11 a.m. EDT (1:11 a.m. PDT; 0811 GMT) Sunday.

Northrop Grumman and the Space Force do not plan to provide a live webcast of the launch.

There is a 60% chance of acceptable weather for Sunday’s launch opportunity, primarily driven by a thick marine cloud layer at Vandenberg that could prevent the L-1011 aircraft, named “Stargazer,” from taking off.

The 55-foot-long (17-meter) Pegasus XL rocket is capable of placing a payload of up to 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms) into low Earth orbit, according to Northrop Grumman. The rocket consists of a winged first stage and two additional solid-fueled motors.

The L-1011 carrier jet, crewed by two pilots, a flight engineer, and two launch operators, will head west from Vandenberg to the Pegasus drop box about 150 miles (250 kilometers) off the coast.

“At this point, we’re pretty much ready to go,” said Kurt Eberly, director of Northrop Grumman’s launch vehicles division. “We are monitoring the weather. The marine layer has been moving in at night, and this launch is scheduled for early morning. So we’ll be monitoring that for some of the aircraft constraints in terms of ceiling minimums and visibility minimums, and hopefully we can get clear on that.”

The mission launching Sunday is known as TacRL-2, and is part of the Space Force’s “Tactically Responsive Launch” program.

Military officials have released few details about the Odyssey satellite.

Federal judge blocks Biden’s pause on new oil, gas leases

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Biden administration’s suspension of new oil and gas leases on federal land and water was blocked Tuesday by a federal judge in Louisiana, who ordered that plans be resumed for lease sales that were delayed for the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.

U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty’s ruling came in a lawsuit filed in March by Louisiana’s Republican attorney general, Jeff Landry and officials in 12 other states. Doughty’s ruling granting a preliminary injunction to those states said his order applies nationwide.

The 13 states said the administration bypassed comment periods and other bureaucratic steps required before such delays can be undertaken. Doughty heard arguments in the case last week in Lafayette.

The moratorium was imposed after Democratic President Joe Biden on Jan. 27 signed executive orders to fight climate change. The suit was filed in March. The states opposing the suspension said it was undertaken without the required comment periods and other bureaucratic steps.

Federal lawyers also argued that the public notice and comment period doesn’t apply to the suspension, that the lease sales aren’t required by law and that the Secretary of the Interior has broad discretion in leasing decisions.

Although Landry and the lawsuit’s supporters said the moratorium has already driven up prices and endangered energy jobs, Biden’s suspension didn’t stop companies from drilling on existing leases.

“No existing lease has been cancelled as a result of any of the actions challenged here, and development activity from exploration through drilling and production has continued at similar levels as the preceding four years,” lawyers for the administration argued in briefs.

A long-term halt to oil and gas sales would curb future production and could hurt states like Louisiana that are heavily dependent on the industry that has contributed to global warming.

The lawsuit notes that coastal states receive significant revenue from onshore and offshore oil and gas activity. Stopping leases, the lawsuit argues, would diminish revenue that pays for Louisiana efforts to restore coastal wetlands, raise energy costs and lead to major job losses in oil-producing states.

Twitter Becomes First American Platform to Lose its Coveted ‘Legal Shield’ in India

Twitter became the first American platform to lose its legal shield in India for 3rd party content.

Twitter failed to appoint statutory officers under the new IT rules by May 25 and ignored the “one last notice” issued on June 5.

The Times of India reported:

NEW DELHI: Twitter has lost the coveted “safe harbour” immunity in India over its failure to appoint statutory officers on the company’s role in line with the new IT rules, and its top executives, including the country managing director, could now face police questioning and criminal liability under IPC over ‘unlawful’ and ‘inflammatory’ content posted on the platform by any user.

With this, Twitter becomes the only American platform to have the protective shield – granted under Section 79 of the IT Act, even though others such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram remain protected, official sources said.

Last month the Delhi Police Special Cell raided offices of Twitter in Delhi and Gurgaon in connection with their “Toolkit” probe.

Police sent a letter to Twitter India after the social media giant labeled BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra’s tweet as “manipulated media.”

The BJP party (right-wing) is one of the two major political parties in India.

“We want to know what information Twitter has about the toolkit and why they chose to give the ‘manipulated media’ label. Our team is conducting raids at their Delhi office in Mehrauli and their Gurgaon office on Golf Course Road,” said the officer.

Lawsuits Filed Against Seven Airlines And TSA Over Mask Mandates

44-year old Washington, D.C. man Lucas Wall has filed a lawsuit against seven different airlines and a separate lawsuit against TSA challenging mask mandates on airplanes. Wall is suing the airlines Frontier, Spirit, Delta, JetBlue, Allegiant, Alaska and Southwest in Orlando, Florida’s U.S. District Court, seeking over $300,000 in damages. Wall struggles to breathe in masks due to his generalized anxiety disorder, according to the plaintiff.

“The evidence is indisputable that all seven defendants for the past year or so during the COVID-19 pandemic have illegally discriminated against potentially millions of flyers with disabilities,” Wall said in a statement. “By refusing to grant any mask exemptions and/or requiring such an onerous exemption process that travelers such as myself with a medical condition that makes it impossible for them to cover their face are essentially banned from using the nation’s commercial aviation system.”

Mike Pompeo: Wuhan Lab Still Operational, Next Virus Could ‘Kill not Three Million, but 30 Million’

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is still operational and likely still undertaking gain-of-function research to develop coronaviruses that are more lethal and contagious, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow, author of Breaking the News: Exposing the Establishment Media’s Hidden Deals and Secret Corruption.

Identification of the novel coronavirus’s origin should be a priority of the U.S. government from both global health and national security perspectives, Pompeo held.

“We shouldn’t forget this lab is still up and running,” he said. “There [are] no increased safety measures that I’m aware of. I’m sure they are still conducting viral research, probably gain-of-function research inside this lab, making these viruses more lethal and more transmissible. This risk is not gone. This is a serious and urgent matter. We have to confront it in a way that reflects that.”

Pompeo noted that “unanswered questions” remained about the outbreak’s origins.

He stated, “I’m confident that we will conclude that this came from the virology lab, but put that aside. [We] know that the Chinese Communist Party allowed this virus to escape from Wuhan. They allowed folks to travel to Milan and outside of Hubei province and foisted this virus that killed three million people around the world upon us all. [They] continue to cover it up to this day.”

Schiller told staffers in a memo she’s leaving next month, “It’s time to take a break and look forward to the

future and other opportunities in my career.” Schiller added, “I have agreed to stay on and help through the transition which will give me the opportunity to thank each of you personally for your commitment and friendship.”

Schiller has been with CBS for more than 40 years. Before coming to KYW, she was a producer of the Eye on America segments and was medical producer for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. She’s also worked on CBS This Morning, at WCAU (when it was a CBS station) and KMOX in St. Louis.

Kodak’s CEO, Top Lawyer Must Testify in NY Insider Trading Probe

Eastman Kodak Co.’s chief executive officer must testify publicly in an investigation of whether his sale of company shares last year constituted insider trading, a judge ordered.

CEO James Continenza and General Counsel Roger Byrd must answer questions this fall and produce documents this month in the probe by New York Attorney General Letitia James, New York state judge Barbara Jaffe ordered on Tuesday. James asked the court this month to order Kodak and the executives to provide evidence, saying she had “determined to commence an action” against Kodak and Continenza. James alleges that Kodak and Continenza violated New York securities law when the CEO bought 46,737 shares of the company’s stock on June 23, 2020. The trades came about a month before the stock soared on an announcement by Donald Trump’s White House of a deal to lend Kodak $765 million to produce drug ingredients amid the coronavirus pandemic. The deal was later put on hold. “Today’s order will force Mr. Continenza and Kodak’s general counsel to testify in open court, where the facts will be exposed before the American people,” James said in a statement. Kodak had no immediate comment on the ruling.

In a statement on June 1, the Rochester print and chemicals company denied that Continenza had inside information and said his trades had been approved by Byrd and later by outside lawyers who conducted an independent investigation. Jaffe’s order requires Byrd to testify on Sept. 24 and Continenza on Oct. 1. Kodak must turn over relevant documents by the end of June.

The case is James v. Eastman Kodak Co., 451652/2021, New York State Supreme Court (Manhattan).
