Finance ministers from wealthy G7 nations on Saturday endorsed a global minimum corporate tax rate of at least 15 percent,

Regarding the commitment on taxation, Britain's Treasury noted that "the largest and most profitable multinationals will be required to

pay tax in the countries where they operate and not just where they have their headquarters".--

Welcoming the move, Facebook's vice president of global affairs Nick Clegg tweeted that the company wanted

"the international tax reform process to succeed and recognise this could mean... paying more tax, and in different places".

British finance minister Rishi Sunak, who chaired the talks held in person after an easing of Covid-19 restrictions,

expressed delight at "a historic agreement to reform the global tax system".

Sunak said the G7 had agreed to make the system "fit for the global digital age",

as he thanked his counterparts for striking "a deal of historic significance".

The landmark move comes as governments seek

to repair finances battered during the pandemic by slashed tax receipts plus vast spending and borrowing.

The London gathering has also prepared the ground for a summit of G7 leaders in Cornwall, southwest England,

Momentum has grown behind the US-led plans to limit the ability of multinationals such as tech giants

to game the tax system to boost profits,

German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz on Saturday said the commitment was "very good news for justice and fiscal solidarity".

"Enterprises can no longer shy away from their fiscal obligations by cunningly transferring their profits to countries

with opaque tax structures," he said, calling the move "bad news for tax havens".

Biden had called for a unified minimum corporate tax rate of 15 percent in negotiations with

the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and G20.

OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann called the G7 agreement

"a landmark step toward the global consensus necessary to reform the international tax system".

British charity Oxfam said the agreed minimum rate was not high enough.

"It's about time that some of the world's most powerful economies force multinational corporations,

including tech and pharma giants, to pay their fair share of tax," said Gabriela Bucher, executive director of Oxfam International.

"However, fixing a global minimum corporate tax rate of just 15 percent is far too low.

It will do little to end the damaging race to the bottom on corporate tax and curtail the widespread use of tax havens."

Yellen, holding a press conference following the G7 meet, identified Ireland and China as having concerns regarding a global minimum rate.

"The post-pandemic world must be fairer in particular with regard to international taxation," she added.

French prosecutors open probe into Lebanese bank governor

French prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into money laundering allegations against Lebanon’s central bank governor, Agence France-Presse reported on Sunday.

Riad Salameh is under investigation in relation to possible conspiracy and organised money-laundering, AFP said, citing a source with knowledge of the case. Salameh’s French lawyer Pierre-Olivier Sur dismissed the allegations as a politically motivated “communications operation” in a statement sent to Reuters by the bank governor on Sunday. Responding last month to the underlying legal complaint against him by anti-corruption group Sherpa, Salameh said he had demonstrated that his wealth had been acquired before he took up his bank post in 1993. The French financial prosecutor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sherpa filed the complaint against Salameh in April, citing investments including millions of euros in property. Lebanon opened its own investigation in April following a Swiss legal request alleging that more than $300 million had been embezzled from the central bank via a company owned by Salameh’s brother. Salameh had no comment at the time when asked by Reuters about the opening of that investigation and actions related to it, including the sealing of his brother’s office and the confiscation of files.

Lebanon’s financial and political elite have long been under scrutiny over allegations of mismanagement, corruption and obstructing efforts to unlock international aid.

Phoenix fire crews still working to extinguish recycling yard fire

FOX 10's Steve Nielsen spoke with Captain Todd Keller with the Phoenix Fire Department to learn about what crews are doing to fully extinguish the massive fire that broke out near 35th Avenue and Buckeye on Saturday.

PHOENIX - Phoenix fire officials say a sixth alarm fire at a recycling yard near 35th Avenue and Buckeye prompted the largest response in the department's history on June 5.

"I can't remember the last time we had a sixth alarm," said Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller. "We've had a couple two, three alarms in the last couple of months, but this is a big one."

The fire was originally a first alarm early Saturday afternoon, but it quickly escalated, maxing out the alarm system and triggering the type of response that would normally only be seen with wildfires.

Residents say that the smoke could be seen from as far as Mesa and Ahwatukee. Meanwhile, fire officials say 150 residential and commercial customers were without power for about 10 hours.

Fire officials say multiple businesses adjacent to the recycling yard were lost, including a recycling center, a lumbar company, and a tire shop.

The smoke plume from the fire was so large, it even showed up on National Weather Service radar and could be seen from space.

According to Phoenix Fire officials, the fire started at around 12:30 p.m.

By the time firefighters arrived, Officials say they found multiple pallets of cardboard and paper on fire.

"Went out to get the mail and we just pretty much saw, like, a cloud of smoke," said Cindy Ramirez.

"I could see it from miles away out my window, and I’m like ‘I better go check that out,’" said Jason Feder.

At one point, fire officials say the fire jumped 35th Avenue, causing multiple cars at a small junk yard to catch fire.

Over 200 firefighters battle recycling yard fire in West Phoenix

Phoenix Fire officials say the 6th alarm fire prompted the largest response in the fire department's history. FOX 10's Irene Snyder reports.

Phoenix Fire officials say 35th Avenue will be closed until further notice from Buckeye to Van Buren. Officials also say over 200 firefighters and 10 different agencies were involved in firefighting efforts. One of the firefighters suffered a leg injury, and is now in the hospital in stable condition.

Besides the massive blaze, firefighters also had to deal with 108°F temperatures.

"We have to layer our resources. we keep upgrading assignments so we can recycle our crews. Our firefighters train for situations like this. This is not their first time in the summer," said Cpt. Keller.

By 7:12 p.m. on Saturday, Phoenix Fire officials say crews will remain on scene throughout the night to extinguish remaining hotspots.

Several pallets reignited overnight, and firefighters have remained at the yard to ensure that the scene is under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

But Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton insists that voting abuse cases should not be a Right-Left death match. “If you’re a Leftist Democrat trying to take on an incumbent in a corrupt jurisdiction, voter fraud can keep you from gaining traction as well,” he says. Judicial Watch recently investigated such a case in New Jersey.

In April, we sued Pennsylvania for failing to make reasonable efforts to remove ineligible voters from their rolls, as required by the NVRA. Earlier this month, Pennsylvania offered a limited capitulation: it admitted it had reported incorrect information to a federal agency on the removal of ineligible voters.

The Pennsylvania numbers were pathetic. The state initially claimed that in one county of 457,000 registrants, it had found only eight inactive names eligible for removal under the NVRA; in another county of 357,000 registrants, five such names had been removed; in a third county of 403,000 registrants, four such names removed. The state has since revised its numbers, but even the new numbers are too small. Pennsylvania now admits that in eighteen other counties—which together contain twenty-five percent of the entire state’s registered voters—it removed a grand total of fifteen inactive, ineligible voters.

Judicial Watch is keeping the pressure on Pennsylvania. “Pennsylvania’s voting rolls are such a mess that even Pennsylvania can’t tell a court the details of how dirty or clean they are,” Tom says. “The simple solution is to follow the federal law and take the necessary and simple steps to clean up their voter rolls.”

We’ve also gone to court in Colorado to clean up voter rolls. Authoritative studies in recent years show that a majority of Colorado counties have registration rates that exceed 100% of the voting-age population. (Read more about the studies in the Judicial Watch lawsuit, here.) In fact, Colorado leads the nation in percentages of counties with more than 100% of eligible voters registered to vote.

Our lawsuit charges “an ongoing, systemic problem with Colorado’s voter list maintenance obligations” and asks the court to order the state to “implement a general program that makes a reasonable effort to remove the registration of ineligible registrants” from voter rolls.

In April, we filed suit against North Carolina for the same reason—large numbers of ineligible voters on the state voter rolls. Our lawsuit argues that North Carolina has about one million inactive voters on its rolls. That’s about seventeen percent of the state’s total voter registration.

The state has a terrible voter registration record, one of the worst in the nation. In nineteen North Carolina counties, twenty percent of the registrations were inactive. In three other counties, twenty-five percent or more were inactive.

We told the court that North Carolina failed to clean up its voter rolls. In addition, we say, the state violated the National Voter Registration Act by not providing Judicial Watch with public records related to registration numbers.

Public records are something we know a lot about. Judicial Watch is famously at the forefront of freedom of information efforts around the nation. He was suppressing the science. But rather trying to silence anything that disagreed with the political narrative that was convenient that he was pushing at that moment…

…If you went out and posted the facts that led, a year ago, to the very strong likelihood that the coronavirus escaped from a Chinese government lab in Wuhan, China. If you posted that a year ago and they took it down, I think there is a very good argument you have a cause of action against Facebook. And, Facebook would ordinarily say, “We’re a private company. We’re not liable.” Well, you know, when they act at the behest of the government. When they contact Fauci. When they say, “Should we censor this and Fauci says, “Yes.” And they censor it for the federal government. And then magically when the government changes its mind and says, “Oh, all those facts that were there a year ago, now you’re allowed to talk about it.” They stop censoring it with the flip of a switch. That lays a very strong argument that Facebook is operating as a state agency and that opens very seriously legal liability.
