European Investment Bank Issues €100 Million In Digital Bonds Using Ethereum

The European Investment Bank will use blockchain technology to issue two-year digital bonds, the latest sign of growing mainstream adoption for crypto only this time Ethereum is taking the spotlight courtesy of the EIB.

In an article published earlier on Tuesday, Bloomberg detailed the European Investment Bank’s plans to use Ethereum to register €100 million (~$120M) worth of digital notes. Goldman Sachs, Banco Santander, and Société Générale will manage the sale. According to a Bloomberg the source the notes may be priced as soon as today.

As CryptoBriefing notes, the European Investment Bank using Ethereum to register digital bonds would help reinforce Ethereum’s value proposition as a “global settlement layer.” The project’s biggest evangelists have long discussed Ethereum’s potential to act as the base layer for transactions of various forms. Ethereum processes its transactions using smart contracts; it’s the biggest and most used smart contract platform today, recording about 1.5 million transactions daily.

In recent years, the network’s activity has been characterized by the DeFi and NFT booms, but Ethereum still has to earn wider recognition among institutions like banks. If the European Investment Bank and other financial giants are to start issuing payments on Ethereum, mass adoption may be on the horizon.

Though Ethereum is not as widely known as its predecessor, Bitcoin, it has had its fair share of mainstream attention recently. CME Group, the world’s largest derivatives exchange, launched ETH futures in February. Like BTC, ETH is now supported by PayPal. This year’s NFT explosion has also inspired digital creators and major pop artists like Eminem and Kings of Leon to start using the network.

ETH jumped this afternoon, possibly in response to the Bloomberg report. It traded as high as trading at $2,651 at publication, a new record high, before retracing to $2,625. It has gained over 20% in the past three days, and is up 267% YTD, vastly outperforming bitcoin.

JOHN KERRY’S POSSIBLE DEFENSE IN IRAN LEAK UPROAR COULD SHOW HE UNDERMINED TRUMP

In any case, Trump’s national security brain trust has been simmering about the Kerry team’s interregnum contact with Iranian officials since 2018, when then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo faulted him for meeting Zarif at the Munich Security Conference. “I am reasonably confident that he was not there in support of U.S. policy,” Pompeo said that September.

Kerry denied “coaching” Zarif on how to respond to Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. “What I have done is tried to elicit from him what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East for the better,” he told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Pompeo’s team suspects that Kerry and the former officials stiffened Iran’s resolve not to negotiate under pressure from Trump, with the expectation that a Democratic president elected on a platform of restoring the nuclear deal would end the pressure campaign.

“It definitely negatively impacted one of our goals, which was to get Iran to the negotiating table as a result of our sanctions, because Iranians felt they had a possible out coming to them in November 2020,” former State Department official Gabriel Noronha said.

Noronha, a liaison between the State Department and Congress during Pompeo’s tenure, believes that Iranian officials regarded Trump’s overtures to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as a sign that a conversation may be fruitful. “There was very much a [sense that if] you call Donald Trump on the phone … you never know what kind of deal he’s going to be in the mood for, and if it’s right before the election and he wants an election win, in their minds, they could get a good deal out of it.”

That complaint encompasses not only Kerry but other Obama administration alumni who now hold high office.Current Deputy Secretary of StateWendy Sherman acknowledged in 2018 that she had met with Zarif but added she gave the Pompeo team advance notice. “The criticism of us is ludicrous on so many levels,” Sherman, a top negotiator of the Iran deal under Kerry, said in response to Pompeo’s criticisms.

Another senior member of Obama’s national security team, Robert Malley, who is now Biden’s special representative for Iran at the State Department, also met with Iranian officials in his capacity as International Crisis Group president.

Former Ambassador Dan Shapiro, who represented the U.S. in Israel during Obama’s tenure, defended the meetings as “completely legitimate” when Jewish Insider revealed them in 2019, with the caveat that his colleagues should “guard against giving Iranian officials the impression that they are an alternative outlet to debate U.S. policy. We have one government and one president at a time.”

Biden to Nominate Former Pentagon Official Frank Kendall to Top Air Force Post

President Joe Biden plans to nominate Frank Kendall, a former top Pentagon official, to be the next Air Force secretary, the White House announced Tuesday.

Defense News first reported the news of Kendall's expected nomination.

Gina Ortiz Jones, a former Air Force captain, has also been nominated to be the under secretary of the service, the White House said. Jones, an intelligence officer who deployed to Iraq and is openly gay, ran as a Democrat for Congress in 2018 and again in 2020.

John Roth is currently the acting Air Force secretary. Barbara Barrett, who served as the fourth female Air Force secretary and succeeded Heather Wilson, was the last person to officially fill the role.

Kendall currently holds a number of positions, including senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and senior adviser to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the White House said.

"Frank Kendall is exactly the kind of public servant we need at the helm of the Air Force at a time when the service is navigating so many unique challenges, including effective acquisition to meet our nation's future threats," Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. "With more than 40 years of experience in defense and national security, and with a particular focus on acquisition policy during his tenure in the Obama administration, I cannot think of a better, more equipped leader to tackle these issues head on."

Smith also praised Biden's nomination of Jones, who would be "the first woman of color to serve as Under Secretary of the Air Force, marking yet another historic nomination as the Biden-Harris administration continues to prove their commitment to building a diverse Department of Defense that reflects the American population."

Kendall spent 10 years on active duty and retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Army Reserve. Under the Obama administration, he served as the under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics at the Pentagon between 2012 and 2017. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and also received a degree in aerospace engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a law degree from Georgetown University.

Kendall was instrumental in facilitating an expensive overhaul of the Pentagon's military health system in 2015. The Defense Department that year awarded a $4.3 billion contract to a team that included Leidos Inc. and Cerner Corp. to modernize the military's digital medical records system.

Former Obama White House advisor Seth Andrew arrested, accused of stealing from charter school he founded

A former advisor in the Obama White House has been arrested on charges of scheming to steal $218,005 from a charter school network he founded, federal authorities said. Seth Andrew, who also worked in the Education Department, is due to appear in Manhattan federal court, where a complaint says he used funds from Democracy Prep Public Schools to get a favorable home mortgage interest rate. The husband of CBS News anchor Lana Zak is charged with wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements to a financial institution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Seth Andrew, who served as an education advisor in the Obama White House, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of scheming to steal $218,005 from a public charter school network that he founded, federal authorities said. Andrew, 42, was busted in New York City, where he and his wife, CBS News anchor Lana Zak, have a residence valued at more than $2 million. The founder of Democracy Prep Public Schools is accused of using more than half of the allegedly stolen money from that network to maintain a bank account minimum that gave him a more favorable interest rate for a mortgage on his and Zak’s Manhattan residence. Zak was not charged in the case.

Prosecutors said Andrew in 2019 — more than two years after severing ties with Democracy Prep — looted a series of escrow accounts he had previously set up for individual schools within Democracy Prep’s network, and then used their funds to open a business account in the name of one of the schools at a bank. A surveillance photo from a bank, which was included in a criminal complaint, show Andrew at that bank, where he was closing one of the schools’ escrow account there in October 2019. Andrew is seen in that photo wearing a yellow hat, which an FBI agent noted in the complaint “is essentially Andrew’s ‘calling card,’” as it signifies a connection to Democracy Prep “and his leadership of it.” Andrew is charged with wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements to a financial institution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which is prosecuting the case.

At an appearance in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, a judge ordered Andrew released today on a $500,000 personal recognizance bond, which will have three co-signers. As a condition of that bond, both Andrew and Zak must surrender their passports, and Andrew’s travel was restricted to New York City, several counties north of the city, Long Island, and Vermont. Andrew next is due in court on May 27. Zak, who has three children with Andrew, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
