Moderna COVID vaccine could receive emergency authorization for children ages 12 to 15 within ‘weeks’

After months of clinical trials examining how Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine affects children 12 to 15 years old, Dr. Robert Finberg of UMass Medical School in Worcester anticipates emergency authorization for the population within weeks.

UMass Medical School researchers began enrolling adolescents ages 12 through 17 in February. The trials were expected to enroll 3,000 adolescents at up to 15 sites nationwide.

They are now fully enrolled and researchers are waiting for the data to return.

“So far the clinical trials have been very successful,” Finberg said. “I think we’re confident that they will continue to be. These vaccines look like they are very safe and very efficacious.”

Last November, Moderna announced its vaccine offered a 95% efficacy rate during its phase three clinical trials, with 100% effectiveness at preventing hospitalizations as a result of the virus.

Preliminary data from the trials at UMass Medical School suggest that the vaccine could be even more effective with fewer side effects for children 12 to 15 years old. Emergency authorization by the United States’ Food and Drug Administration could be just weeks away, Finberg said.

“So far, at least, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine, appear to be equally effective in young people,” Finberg said. “If anything, they have fewer adverse events. There have been no big differences. We don’t expect that there will be problems with young people. If anything, they’ll do better.”

Finberg said generally speaking it’s common for young people’s immune systems to respond better to vaccines. The COVID-19 vaccines appear to be no different according to early clinical trials.

Due to the success of the trials, Finberg expects emergency authorization soon.

“It should be weeks. Everybody thinks we can get this done before the fall,” Finberg said. “That would be the goal.”

Finberg said the goal would be to immunize children ages 12 to 15 before school resumes in the fall. Children ages 3 to 11 could potentially receive the vaccine after that.

Finberg said it’s common for clinical trials to be separated into age groups. Although the trials individually aren’t all that different whether it’s for children ages 3 to 11 or adults over the age of 75.

“They’re not much different,” Finberg said. “Obviously, the parents are involved in a pediatric trial, but it’s done in very similar ways, both with close follow-up and monitoring very carefully of side effects.”

Deutsche Boerse to de-list Coinbase from Xetra and Frankfurt trade

Deutsche Boerse said on Wednesday it would de-list the shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global from its Xetra trading system and the Frankfurt stock exchange by end of Friday’s trading session.

“The reason for the de-listing is a missing reference data for these shares,” Deutsche Boerse said, adding the de-listing would apply until further notice.

When Coinbase trading started at Deutsche Boerse’s platforms, a wrong reference code - a so-called LEI code - was used by mistake, Deutsche Boerse said. It was not clear whose mistake it was.

Such an individual reference code is needed for identification and a regulatory requirement for admission to trading. “The only way for Coinbase to resume trading is for the issuer to apply for an LEI,” Deutsche Boerse said.

Coinbase did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment outside U.S. business hours.

The U.S. cryptocurrency exchange made its Nasdaq debut last week, its direct listing marking a major milestone in the development of bitcoin and other digital assets.

The listing of the San Francisco-based firm is by far the biggest yet of a cryptocurrency company, with its market capitalisation briefly topping $100 billion on its first day of trading. As of Tuesday, its market cap stood at $63.9 billion.

Wisconsin City Clerks Weigh in on Green Bay Colleague Who Quit Job Over Outside Election Help

MADISON, Wis.—Former Green Bay City Clerk Kris Teske has been called a “superhero” for standing up against the pressures of city officials and outside election activists interfering in her office.

Teske’s fellow municipal clerks also see the long-time public servant as a cautionary tale.

“Before what happened in Green Bay, this wasn’t even a thought. After reading about what went on there, a lot of clerks went, ‘Holy cow!’ Mostly they are saying, ‘Thank God it wasn’t me,’” Kelly Michaels, master municipal clerk for the city of Brookfield, said.

Michaels is past president of the Wisconsin Municipal Clerks Association and chairwoman of the group’s Legislative Communications and Advocacy Committee. She said Green Bay’s beleaguered former clerk has been a topic of grave concern in recent weeks.

Tempting offers

As a Wisconsin Spotlight investigation uncovered, Teske grew so frustrated with third-party groups and city officials meddling in her office and bullying her and her staff that she resigned.

A complaint filed last week with the Wisconsin Elections Commission alleges Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich, his chief of staff, and other city officials “allowed private activist groups to control significant aspects of the 2020 (presidential) election, including ballot ‘curing’ and vote counting.”

The Chicago-based Center for Tech and Civic Life handed out more than $8 million in “election safety and security” grants to Wisconsin’s five largest and most heavily Democratic cities—Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Kenosha, and Racine. The center received $350 million from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife to “help” local elections offices administer elections.

Emails obtained by Wisconsin Spotlight show Teske voicing concerns about being cut out of election administration decisions. The $1.6 million in grant funding Green Bay received included strings attached that required the clerk’s office to work with the Center for Tech and Civic Life’s left-leaning partners, including a long-time Democratic operative who Teske warned the city about.

At one point, the clerk felt it necessary to tell her superior that she would not break election laws.

“There is one more thing I want to say: If I am ever asked to do anything against the law the answer will be NO!” Teske wrote in an Aug. 26 email to Diana Ellenbecker, Green Bay’s finance director and Teske’s immediate supervisor.

Green Bay received a lot of money from Center for Tech and Civic Life grants—more than four times its total elections budget for 2020. Too much money for cash-strapped cities to resist.

“The comments from our committee members were that this could really happen anywhere—for the right dollar amount,” Michaels said. “While everyone thinks it could never happen here, you start thinking about $1.6 million … What would be the price tag in my community where it would be worth it to sidestep the gatekeeper, the municipal clerk?”

Michaels said Brookfield, a suburban Milwaukee city of about 40,000 people, received a $14,000 grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life. It was chump change compared to the hefty funding the “Wisconsin 5” cities received, and it didn’t come with the same strings attached.

Michael Spitzer-Rubenstein, Wisconsin state lead for the National Vote at Home Institute, a Center for Tech and Civic Life partner, reached out several times with offers to help Brookfield with its November election.

Spitzer-Rubenstein, with an impressive record in Democratic and liberal politics, offered a long list of election administration services, but Michaels, a 30-year municipal clerk veteran, said she wasn’t interested in the kind of “help” the activist was offering for “free.”

The tweet from the Pohlad family opens with a trope about how “toxic and prevalent systemic and individual racism are to our community.”

They then explain they’re “horrified and ashamed that this keeps happening to Black people in our community.”

The Pohlads, worth several billion dollars, also listed money they’ve donated to “racial justice,” along with “BIPOC” businesses, nonprofits and communities.

The statement concludes with a plea to “treat each other with respect and compassion.”

Several hundred comments below were mixed, with some fans offering praise and others asking why the team is again bringing politics into sports, rather than focusing on winning baseball games.

The Twins’ rhetoric comes on the heels of similar calculated statements from President Joe Biden and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

Target Field has posted “End Racism” and “Justice for George Floyd” signs on stadium walls since last summer, and the team canceled a game last week due to the Daunte Wright shooting.
