The film postulates a fictional war between NATO forces and the Warsaw Pact countries that rapidly escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange

between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The action itself focuses on the residents of Lawrence, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, and of several family farms near nuclear missile silos.[4]

The cast includes JoBeth Williams, Steve Guttenberg, John Cullum, Jason Robards, and John Lithgow.

The film was written by Edward Hume, produced by Robert Papazian, and directed by Nicholas Meyer.

Does the adage “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” apply to high tech?

Blake Resnick, CEO of BRINC, a company in the chase to sell drones to police, has developed a drone equipped with stun guns, according to The Intercept. Resnick is a 21-year-old entrepreneur who recently received $25 million in venture capital from Silicon Valley investors. Resnick was recently inducted into Forbes’ “30 under 30” list and is a recipient of a Thiel Fellowship.

Resnick appears to be an impressive young man.

According to The Intercept, Resnick told Stuart Varney of Fox Business his company’s drones are now helping police defuse dangerous hostage situations on a near-daily basis. In the interview, Resnick repeated the claim that he created the company “in large part” as a response to the 2017 Las Vegas massacre. Resnick wanted to help law enforcement to save lives with nonviolent robots equipped with artificial intelligence.

Resnick looks to be a rising star in the world of high tech. According to BRINC’s Values and Ethics page, the company will “Never build technologies designed to hurt or kill.” This falls in line with its commitment to “save lives” and its promise not to “build dystopia.”

Resnick may be dreaming of a highway to heaven but could the road he is paving lead to hell?

BRINC faced backlash when a 2018 promotional video showed that a “Wall of Drones” would be used to “attack migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.”

Three years later, Resnick told The Interceptor in emails that the promotional video for the drones “is immature, deeply regrettable and not at all representative of the direction I have taken the company in since.” The Wall of Drones, Resnick said, was “never fully developed, sold, or used operationally.” The program was discontinued in 2018 because it is “prone to disastrous misuse.”

Well said, Mr. Resnick. The notion “with great power comes great responsibility,” dates back at least to the parable of the sword of Damocles, popularized by Roman politician and philosopher Cicero in 45 B.C.

The sword was given to Damocles by powerful King Dionysius who was sick with worry over being assassinated. Dionysius, you see, kept order in his kingdom by the use of an iron fist. Damocles thought he was flattering Dionysius one day when he told him how blissful his life must be as king.

Irritated, Dionysius invited Damocles to trade places. Damocles accepted and took a seat on the king’s golden couch. Damocles was just getting used to being fed succulent meats by servants when he noticed a razor-sharp sword hanging over his head. The sword was attached to the ceiling by a single horsehair.

Fast forward to 1961. In a speech to the United Nations, then-President John F. Kennedy said, “Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness.”

For Kennedy, the sword of Damocles was technology itself, nuclear bombs. The idea that technology can solve all of our problems is like the golden couch upon which Damocles sat. It is comfortable. It feels safe. But it’s not.

Take heed, young Mr. Resnick. The nuclear bombs weren’t yet equipped with AI.

Transhumanism has been defined as “the science of improving the human population through technologies like genetic engineering and artificial intelligence.” Jeffery Epstein, alleged sex-trafficker par excellence, was a big believer in transhumanism, according to The New York Times. Epstein wasn’t planning on using technology to save the world from itself. He was planning on having the world for himself. And his appetite, apparently, was insatiable.

AI, whether it is used to enforce the law or enhance human intelligence, will not impact human morality. Humans haven’t progressed much on that account, and we’ve produced a lot of technology since inventing the wheel.

A company that implants neural computer interfaces into the brain says a patient with a nervous system disease that left him motionless was able to share a post on social media by just thinking it.

A 62-year-old man in Australia diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – a disease that causes paralysis – is now able to communicate thoughts with others with no muscle activity involved. On Thursday, he published a post on social media “using only direct thought,” the company that enabled him to do so, Synchron, announced.

“I created this tweet just by thinking it” – the tweet read, said to be posted by Philip O’Keefe to the account of Synchron CEO Thomas Oxley.

The ‘first direct-thought tweet’ was created wirelessly from O’Keefe’s brain, according to the company. Following progressive paralysis caused by ALS, the man had a brain computer interface called ‘Stentrode’ installed last year. The implant, “designed to enable patients to wirelessly control digital devices through thought,” was inserted via the jugular vein to avoid drilling into the skull.

24 December 1944

What’s Merry about all this, you ask? We’re fighting — it’s cold, we aren’t home.

All true but what has the proud Eagle Division accomplished with its worthy comrades the 10th Armored Division, the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion and all the rest?

Just this:

We have stopped cold everything that has been thrown at us from the North, East, South and West.

We have identifications from four German Panzer Divisions, two German Infantry Divisions and one German Parachute Division.

These units, spearheading the last desperate German lunge, were headed straight west for key points when the Eagle Division was hurriedly ordered to stem the advance.

How effectively this was done will be written in history; not alone in our Division’s glorious history but in World history.

The Germans actually did surround us, their radios blared our doom. Their Commander demanded our surrender in the following imprudent arrogance:

December 22nd 1944

“To the U. S. A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne.

The fortune of war is changing. This time the U. S. A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units.

More German armored units have crossed the river Ourthe near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompres-Sibret-Tillet.

Libramont is in German hands.

There is only one possibility to save the encircled U. S. A. Troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town.

In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note.

If this proposal should be rejected the German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U. S. A. Troops in and near Bastogne.

The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hour’s term.

All the serious civilian losses caused by this Artillery fire would not correspond with the well known American humanity.

Direct electrical stimulation of the brain can alleviate symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, depression, epilepsy and other neurological disorders. However, access to the brain requires invasive procedures, such as the removal of a portion of the skull or the drilling of a burr hole. Also, electrode implantation into tissue can cause inflammatory tissue responses and brain trauma, and lead to device failure. Here, we report the development and application of a chronically implanted platinum electrode array mounted on a nitinol endovascular stent for the localized stimulation of cortical tissue from within a blood vessel. Following percutaneous angiographic implantation of the device in sheep, we observed stimulation-induced responses of the facial muscles and limbs of the animals, similar to those evoked by electrodes implanted via invasive surgery. Dolly the sheep, no relation to Shaun, was the world’s first cloned mammal and an overnight sensation in 1997.

International TV crews descended on the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh as news of the scientific breakthrough was leaked – one US network wanted to book Dolly for a chat show, which would have been interesting (or not).

And Dolly was apparently a diva. “She would literally fluff herself up for the cameras,” said embryologist Karen Walker, who also described how, lacking incubators to transport eggs and embryos, she would tuck them under her bra straps.

No wonder better-resourced American labs reacted with disbelief when Dolly was unveiled. This delightful BBC Scotland documentary was full of such characterful details, and any screenwriters looking for the next feel-good British (or Scottish) movie should look it up on iPlayer.

Meanwhile, an animal anaesthetist rather sheepishly (sorry) explained how Dolly’s name stuck after his throwaway remark about Dolly Parton and their animal’s creation from mammary gland cells. No doubt social media would have something to say about that today, but in 1997 the nearest Roslin came to being cancelled was by way of fire-bombing animal rights activists.

Misguided concerns over animal welfare aside, the film reminded us of the ethical worries about potential human cloning that fuelled TV discussion programmes at the time. But Dolly’s legacy – the hope for an era of “four-legged drug factories” to treat genetic diseases – is still largely unfulfilled, although it did boost the fruitful area of stem-cell research.

Dolly herself died young, overweight from being fed treats by her admirers, and now resides, stuffed by taxidermists, on a plinth at the National Museum of Scotland. But this colourful documentary was more a celebration of the painstaking brains behind this woolly icon.

Contrary to popular belief, Dolly the Sheep was not actually the first animal to be cloned.

But the reason was she was so famous is probably because she was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.

She's the subject of a documentary which airs on Wednesday on BBC Two, called Dolly: The Sheep that Changed the World.

Dolly was created in 1996 at the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, by a team led by Professor Ian Wilmut, as part of their research to find treatments for genetic disorders.

It was a controversial lab, with animal rights campaigners pointing out that genetically modifying animals and using them for scientific gain was causing them immense suffering.

Two fires broke out in separate animal research centres on the same day - with fire chiefs warning it might have been the work of activists.

Other critics refused to believe Dolly had really been cloned, while religious figures condemned the scientists for "playing God".

Dolly was the only surviving lamb from 277 cloning attempts and was created from an udder cell taken from a six-year-old Finn Dorset sheep.

The pioneering technique the Roslin team used involved transferring the nucleus of an adult cell into an unfertilised egg cell whose own nucleus had been removed.

An electric shock stimulated the hybrid cell to begin dividing and generate an embryo which was then implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother.

The result was a newborn animal that was a genetic copy of the original cell donor.

She was named after country singer Dolly Parton, with Wilmut explaining at the time: "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's." kek

It was an "off the cuff" joke - but the name stuck.

As the news of Dolly's successful creation spread, scientists at the lab were bombarded by requests from grieving people, desperate for their loved ones to be cloned and brought back from the dead.

Dr Ron James, former managing director of PPL Therapeutics, the firm that helped make Dolly, said: "We had a letter which said that a chap's girlfriend had died a couple of weeks before he was due to get married, and could we clone her?

"The answer is, theoretically it might be possible, but you're going to get a tiny baby that's going to be 18 or 20 years younger than your girlfriend was."

It would also potentially take hundreds of embryos to get one successful human clone, all of which would need to be carried by a surrogate who would know it was unlikely they would be able to carry to term.

Dolly was bred with a Welsh Mountain ram and produced six lambs in total - Bonnie, twins Sally and Rosie, and triplets Lucy, Darcy and Cotton.

But in late 2001, at the age of four, she developed arthritis and began to walk stiffly.

This was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs at first, but eventually Dolly was euthanised aged six when she also developed lung disease - living just half her expected lifespan.

It was commonly thought that the disease was due to her being cloned, but actually Roslin scientists insisted this wasn't the case - it was fairly common in sheep and other sheep in the same flock had died from the same affliction.

However, it particularly affects sheep who are kept indoors - and mega-star Dolly always slept indoors for security reasons.

After her death, Dolly's body was preserved via taxidermy and is currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

I keep hearing that more Dems than usual are choosing not to run again. Digging in to test the significance of that versus norms.

This image shows the RETIREMENT related turnover for the last 11 years. We also know the average total service for all US House Reps is 8.9 years.

With 435 Reps / 8.9 years there will be total average annual turnover of 48.9 Reps/year.

Statistically there should be 13 Dem retirements this year, and 12 Republicans. 23 Dems & 12 Reps have announced so far... so that is 178% of normal, or 10 extra so far for the Dems.

So the rumors appear to be true. At least 10 extra Dems are bailing early from the US House of Representatives in 2022... so far.

Fauci vows more testing as Covid’s Omicron hammers US

December 26, 2021

Top US pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci on Sunday acknowledged a Covid “testing problem” as the Omicron strain overwhelms the nation, and he vowed to make more tests available to Americans next month.

“One of the problems is that that’s not going to be totally available to everyone until we get to January, and there are still some issues now of people having trouble getting tested,” Fauci told ABC talk show “This Week.”

“But we’re addressing the testing problem,” he added, saying it should be corrected “very soon.”

Covid cases have skyrocketed across the United States in recent weeks as the highly infectious Omicron variant became the dominant strain, overwhelming hospitals and Covid testing sites as Americans rushed to get tested for holiday travel.

Authorities have recorded an average of over 175,000 new daily cases over the recent period, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Omicron has forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights in the United States as crews called in sick or had to quarantine after exposure to the virus and airlines scrambled to rebook frustrated passengers who had hoped to spend Christmas with their families.

Fauci said the administration was ramping up in order to cope.

“The president’s multi-part component of the response is to make sure that we have adequate backup for hospitals with military personnel, doctors, nurses and other health care providers, making sure that there’s enough PPE (personal protective equipment) and that if needed, there’s enough ventilators in the national strategic stockpile,” he said.

The White House adviser also stressed that Omicron was “extraordinarily contagious.”

At the same time, Fauci noted that recent studies in South Africa and Britain indicate that Omicron was less likely to lead to hospitalization than the previous strains of the virus and that the duration of hospital stays and oxygen needs for patients were lower.

But Fauci also warned that Omicron’s apparent lower severity is likely to be neutralized by how fast it is spreading.

“The issue that we don’t want to get complacent about… is that when you have such a high volume of new infections, it might override a real diminution in severity,” Fauci said.

On Tuesday, the White House announced its new Covid response plan, which includes additional aid to hospitals and ramping up vaccination and testing, but no new restrictions ahead of the end-of-year holidays.
