Illinois Supreme Court Rules Tax On Guns & Ammo Unconstitutional
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled on Oct. 21 that two taxes on guns and ammunition in Cook County violate the state’s constitution because they affect law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment right to acquire firearms for self-defense.
Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis wrote in a 6–0 decision that the taxes violate the constitution’s uniformity clause, while also pointing out that the revenue from the generated tax isn’t directed toward funds or programs that reduce gun violence.
“While the taxes do not directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to use a firearm for self-defense, they do directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to acquire a firearm and the necessary ammunition for self-defense,” Theis wrote in a 14-page opinion (pdf) filed on Thursday.
“Under the plain language of the ordinances, the revenue generated from the firearm tax is not directed to any fund or program specifically related to curbing the cost of gun violence,” she noted. “Additionally, nothing in the ordinance indicates that the proceeds generated from the ammunition tax must be specifically directed to initiatives aimed at reducing gun violence.”
The justice concluded that the case will be remanded to the circuit court “for entry of summary judgment in favor of plaintiffs.”
In 2012, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a $25 tax on the retail purchase of a firearm within the county. The county’s Firearm Tax Ordinance was enacted in April 2013.
A separate county tax was enacted in 2015, which added $0.05 per cartridge for centerfire ammunition and $0.01 per cartridge for rimfire ammunition. Americans who fail to pay those taxes are subject to a $1,000 fine for the first offense and a $2,000 fine for subsequent offenses.
The trade group and gun-rights organization, Guns Save Life, challenged both taxes in a lawsuit against the county, saying they violate the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
A spokesman for Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle said on Thursday they are disappointed in the ruling and will work to determine the next steps.

The White Coat Waste Project, the nonprofit organization that first pointed out that U.S. taxpayers were being used to fund the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology, have now turned its sights on Anthony Fauci on another animal-testing-related matter — infecting dozens of beagles with disease-causing parasites to test an experimental drug on them.
House members, most of whom are Republicans,want Fauci to explain himself in response to allegations brought on by the White Coat Waste Project that involve drugging puppies.
According to the White Coat Waste Project, the Food and Drug Administration does not require drugs to be tested on dogs, so the group is asking why the need for such testing.
White Coat Waste claims that 44 beagle puppies were used in a Tunisia, North Africa, laboratory, and some of the dogs had their vocal cords removed, allegedly so scientists could work without incessant barking.
Leading the effort is Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), writing a letter to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) saying the cordectomies are “cruel” and a “reprehensible misuse of taxpayer funds.”

U.S. oil price passes $85 as OPEC wary to increase crude supply
Oil in the U.S. rallied above $85 a barrel for the first time since 2014, another landmark in a surge in global energy prices, while an eye-watering rally in market structure deepened.
West Texas Intermediate rose as much as 1.6%, while global benchmark Brent also rallied. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told Bloomberg Television at the weekend that producers shouldn’t take the increase in prices for granted. That conservative stance was echoed by both Nigeria and Azerbaijan.
The most recent leg higher in the market has been led by the market’s structure, which has been rallying even faster than headline crude prices. WTI for immediate delivery was trading more than a dollar higher than the next month as traders pay premium prices to secure supplies, a bullish structure known as backwardation. The closely watched spread between the nearest two December contracts was the strongest since 2013 and trading at beyond $12 a barrel.
Oil has more than doubled over the past 12 months, and coupled with a global energy crunch it is fanning inflationary concerns. So far, there appears to be little end in sight for the rally, and Wall Street has been steadily upping its views of the market, expecting prices to trade higher for longer. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. says consumption is on the cusp of returning to pre-Covid levels, while the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies have been restrained in easing the draconian supply cuts imposed in 2020 to salvage prices.
“Continuous global stock drawdowns are still widely anticipated in the coming months and only a dent in demand growth could change the underlying sentiment,” said Tamas Varga, an analyst at brokerage PVM Oil Associates.
Prince Abdulaziz said that demand may increase 500,000-600,000 barrels a day if the Northern Hemisphere’s winter is colder than normal and companies switch from gas to crude, he also cautioned that more barrels from OPEC+ would do little to curb costs of gas in Europe and Asia or gasoline in the U.S.

Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow Says U.S. Third Quarter Growth Was Almost Nil at 0.5 Percent; Wall Street Economists Are Forecasting Over 3 Percent
This coming Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m., the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) will release its advance estimate for U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the third quarter. Some folks are going to have a lot of egg on their face at 8:31 a.m. That’s because the Wall Street crowd of economists has remained wildly optimistic on how the U.S. economy behaved in the third quarter, despite an upsurge in the Delta variant of COVID-19 hobbling consumer confidence and spending. Most economists on Wall Street are forecasting real GDP growth in the third quarter of more than 3 percent.
That Wall Street optimism has not been experienced by the number crunchers on the GDPNow Team at the Atlanta Fed. As of this morning, the AtlantaFed’s GDPNow crew can barely find a pulse for U.S. growth in the third quarter. They are predicting real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the third quarter of just 0.5 percent. That forecast comes with the following caveat: “GDPNow is not an official forecast of the Atlanta Fed. Rather, it is best viewed as a running estimate of real GDP growth based on available economic data for the current measured quarter….”
As the chart above indicates, the GDPNow Team’s number for third quarter GDP has been melting away faster than a snow cone in July. On August 2, it stood at 6.3 percent.
The AtlantaFed’s GDPNow Team will have one last chance to tweak its forecast this Wednesday, after it evaluates the data releases on durable goods orders for September and advance economic indicators. Regardless of who is right on their number, there is no debate that GDP growth fell off a cliff from its reading in the second quarter, which came in at 6.7 percent.
The plunge in third quarter GDP versus second quarter GDP follows a similar plunge in consumer confidence. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell further in September, after declines in both July and August. The Index now stands at 109.3 from a reading of 128.9 in June – a 15 percent drop. The report on September 28 noted the following: “Consumer confidence dropped in September as the spread of the Delta variant continued to dampen optimism. Concerns about the state of the economy and short-term growth prospects deepened, while spending intentions for homes, autos, and major appliances all retreated again.” The U.S. consumer has now had 19 months of hunkering down in their homes, cutting their own hair, while avoiding vacations, dining out and gatherings with friends. The consumer is becoming downright snarly.

Monkeys had parts of their brains destroyed with acid in order to increase their capacity for terror, and were then tormented with simulated spiders, snakes and other things they instinctively fear. These experiments have been ongoing for more than four decades.

Puerto Rico Bankruptcy Judge Threatens Dismissal of Case Without Plan
The judge overseeing Puerto Rico’s record bankruptcy threatened to consider dismissing the island’s more than four-year case if she is unable to confirm a debt restructuring plan soon, U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain said during a hearing Monday.
The judge’s comments came in a hearing Monday to discuss an impasse that has delayed the passage of legislation that would allow for a debt-restructuring plan to move forward. “I will be frank with you, my patience is wearing thin,” Swain said during the hearing. “I’m not convinced that further delays are at the interest of Puerto Rico.”
A dismissal of Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy would upend years of negotiations with bondholders, insurance companies and labor groups to find a way to resolve $33 billion of bonds and other obligations, including $22 billion of general obligations and debt backed by the commonwealth. It would allow investors to sue Puerto Rico for repayment of bonds as a stay on such actions would be lifted without bankruptcy protection. The debt-cutting agreement struck with major bondholders has been imperiled by the territory’s legislature, which failed to approve a measure that would allow Puerto Rico to issue new debt to implement it. Under the deal, investors would exchange their debt for a lesser amount of new bonds, reducing what the government owes.
Puerto Rico’s legislative leaders late Sunday, however, reached an agreement that could end the stalemate. Puerto Rico has been in bankruptcy since May 2017, after years of population loss, economic decline and borrowing to pay for operating expenses.

Mastercard expands cryptocurrency services with wallets, loyalty rewards
Mastercard Inc said on Monday it would allow partners on its network to enable their consumers to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrency using a digital wallet, as well as reward them with digital currencies under loyalty programs. The credit card giant said it would offer these services in partnership with Bakkt Holdings Inc, the digital assets platform founded by NYSE-owner Intercontinental Exchange.
Founded in 2018, Bakkt went public earlier this year through a $2.1 billion merger with a blank-check company. Shares of the company were up 77% at $16.19 on Monday. Mastercard said its partners can also allow customers earn and spend rewards in cryptocurrency instead of loyalty points. The company had said in February here it would begin offering support for some cryptocurrencies on its network this year. Last year, rival Visa Inc had partnered here with cryptocurrency startup BlockFi to offer a credit card that lets users earn bitcoin on purchases. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, touched a record high of $67,016 last week after the debut of the first U.S. bitcoin futures-based exchange traded fund. It has more than doubled in value this year.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST MANDATING EXPERIMENTAL GENE THERAPIES, ESPECIALLY FOR MINORS
* No citizen of the any nation - and certainly, a citizen of the United States - should be compelled to have an experimental drug injected into their body by a government mandate - "my body, my choice."
* Children in particular should not be compelled to serve as subjects in experimental trials.
* In the case of Covid-19 injections, these are not like any other previous vaccines, not only in content but in the very mechanism by which they work. They were created in haste. They do not function the way that normal vaccines function and are therefore completely new in every sense of the term.
* It is now well-known that children seldom if ever become severely ill with Covid-19 - and are not 'superspreaders' of the disease, despite initial media claims to the contrary. The small number of deaths in children occurred almost (or possibly entirely) in those with other serious pre-existing conditions.
* Whatever numbers so exist regarding "cases", these are grossly overstated due to the use of the PCR test, which is objectionable for many reasons (its inventor said "don't use for diagnosis"; the cycle rates were initially set way too high; the cycle rates are never published and so can be easily manipulated to achieve desired stats; PCR failed its FDA approval test at the end of July 2021 and is due to be retired by Dec 31).
* Whatever numbers exist regarding deaths are also grossly inflated, commonly including deaths from anyone with a positive PCR test, even if they died of something completely unrelated, sometimes even ACCIDENTS. Hospitals are given financial incentives to report deaths as Covid deaths, even in the case of patients with longstanding illnesses who happen to test positive for PCR but as asymptomatic. Parents are also given incentives in the form of government payments to cover burial costs - but only if the death is officially covid. Also, the inclusion of asymptomatic people as "covid cases" is highly questionnable, as the viral load would be too low to cause either illness or the ability to transmit the disease.
* Supposing a person - and especially a child - did become genuinely afflicted with Covid-19:
There are clinically-tested treatment protocols that have been highly successful in preventing disease progression, hospitalization or death now used by countries such as Mexico, Peru, India, and Japan that include commonly available, safe, and cheap medications such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, HCQ, Ivermection, Budesonide, and Aspirin or other anti-clotting meds. * In the specific case of mandating the injection of children 5-11 with experimental gene threrapy "vaccines":
this is not only unnecessary, cruel, and anti-scientific, it is criminal in my opinion. The risks so outweigh the benefits that by any standard, either moral or legal, it is completely unjustified. It is unthinkable to force young children with developing immune systems to undergo such a procedure, especially in the absence of data on the longterm effects of these experimental treatments on adults.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the ambassadors of 10 countries, including the U.S., France, and Germany, be declared "persona non grata" after calling for the release of jailed Turkish businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala.
Persona non grata literally means "an unwelcome person."
"I gave the necessary instructions to our minister of foreign affairs," Erdogan said in a speech Saturday. "I told him what to do. I said that you will deal with these 10 ambassadors being declared persona non grata as soon as possible."

Montana affiliate was "underwhelmed" by evidence National School Boards Association used to justify FBI intervention.
Anational education group that implied some parental activism is tantamount to "domestic terrorism" owes nearly $20 million to the IRS, according to tax forms reviewed by Just the News.
Most of that comes from "accrued pension liability," as disclosed by the National School Boards Association's 2017 and 2018 Form 990 filings. Unlike those two, the 2019 form — the most recently filed — does not include an itemized list under the federal income taxes subheading for "other liabilities."
Its liabilities have exceeded its assets by around two to one in recent years, and up to seven to one in the first half of the 2010s, according to rundowns by ProPublica.
Just the News couldn't find any IRS action seeking recovery of that money. The only federal legal action against NSBA in its own jurisdiction was an employee lawsuit alleging racial discrimination, which a judge dismissed about a year ago.
NSBA director of communications Jason Amos noted it's a tax-exempt nonprofit but didn't respond when told the liabilities are listed on its own federal tax forms.

The financial problems exacerbate the revolt NSBA is facing from at least 21 state members after it asked President Biden to use the Patriot Act in response to "the growing number of threats of violence and acts of intimidation" against school board members, citing both physical altercations and heated rhetoric at public meetings.
Its board of directors issued a memo to members Friday saying "we regret and apologize for the letter … there was no justification for some of the language" NSBA used. "[T]he voices of parents … should and must continue to be heard" when it comes to decisions about their children's education, health, and safety."
The board said it failed to properly consult members, which caused them "strain and stress," and promised to launch a "formal review" and announce "specific improvements soon" on consultation and coordination.

Following weeks of rising tensions between civilian and military members of a state council attempting to guide Sudan to Democracy two years after the fall of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir, the Sudanese military has decided to end Sudan's Democratic experiment - arresting the prime minister and a large number of senior cabinet members and pro-grovernment party leaders, and shutting off the Internet - with a coup, per reports from Reuters and the AP.
In response, thousands of Sudanese citizens have taken to the streets in Khartou and its twin city of Omdurman to protest the military's decision to seize power from a fragile government that had only just barely made the transition to civilian rule. The coup is hardly a surprise for the US and EU; a failed coup attempt last month infuriated progressive Sudanese who pushed for the overthrow of al-Bashir, while the country's more conservative Islamists support a military-led government.
Access to the Internet was "widely disrupted" during the coup, while the country’s state news channel started playing patriotic traditional music. Military forces even reportedly stormed the TV station's office in Omdurman and arrested a few employees.
This latest coup comes less than one month before the powerful Sudanese Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan was expected to turn over leadership of the Sudan's Sovereign Council, a transitional committee including both military and civilian members that was supposed to steward the transition to democracy,
According to the AP, a military takeover "would be a major setback for Sudan, which has grappled with a stop-and-go transition to democracy since long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was toppled by mass protests two years ago."
Reports of a coup attempt emerged before dawn on Monday in Sudan. By mid-morning the country's information minister confirmed that Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had been detained and moved to an undisclosed location. Several other senior officials were detained, and all of their whereabouts were unknown, according to a statement from the country's information ministry posted to Facebook.
Gen. Burhan hinted that he might not willingly turn over command of the state council last month during a TV interview:
Burhan, who leads the council, warned in televised comments last month that the military would hand over power only to a government elected by the Sudanese people. His comments suggested he might not stick to the previously agreed timetable, which called for the council to be led by a military figure for 21 months, followed by a civilian for the following 18 months. Under that plan, the handover was to take place sometime in November, with the new civilian leader to be chosen by an alliance of unions and political parties that led the uprising against al-Bashir.
The Sovereign Council was supposed to lead Sudan to elections by the end of 2023.
As tensions mounted, the Biden Admin's envoy to the region, Jeffrey Feltman, said he met with Sudanese officials over the weekend in an attempt to fix the growing rift between the civilians and the military.

Ironically, this latest coup in the Middle East-North Africa region occurred right around the 10th anniversary of the 'Arab Spring', which saw nearly half a dozen governments in Sudan's region - including nearby Tunisia, Libya and Egype - overthrown during Democratic uprisings with decidedly mixed results.
While coups (or attempted coups) aren't uncommon in the developing world, Sudan's (now former) leader should probably count himself lucky: At least he's still alive, unlike some other former third-world leaders we could name.
Well, at least for now, anyway.

Cryptocurrencies post record inflows in latest week -CoinShares data
Cryptocurrency products and funds had record inflows last week to the tune of $1.5 billion, their 10th straight week of investments, as optimism soared with the trading of bitcoin exchange traded funds, a report from digital asset manager CoinShares showed on Monday.
Inflows so far this year hit $8 billion, far exceeding the record set for the whole of 2020 of $6.7 billion, the data showed as of the week ended Oct. 22. Total assets under management also hit a new record of $79.2 billion, although it ended the week at $76.7 billion. The bulk of inflows for the sixth straight week went to Bitcoin, with $1.45 billion, data showed. Inflows to the world’s largest cryptocurrency year-to-date amounted to $6.1 billion. The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF and the Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF debuted last week, a defining moment for the crypto industry that is expected to lure more inflows from big institutional investors.
That pushed bitcoin to an all-time peak of $67,016.50. It was last up 4.6% at $63,682.
Ethereum, meanwhile, saw outflows for a third consecutive week totaling $1.4 million. CoinShares believed that the outflows were due to minor profit-taking as the price approaches record highs. Ether, the currency for the Ethereum blockchain, last exchanged hands at $4,224.30, up 3.5%. Other altcoins saw inflows. Solana, Cardano and Binance posted inflows totaling $8.1 million, $5.3 million and $1.8 million, respectively. Assets under management at Grayscale and Coinshares, the two largest digital asset managers, climbed last week to $54.6 billion and $5.2 billion, respectively.

Marine Corps Makes It Clear: Get The Vaccine or Get Out
The Marine Corps didn't mince words Monday about what will happen to Marines who refuse to get the COVID-19 vaccine by its Nov. 28 deadline: You will be kicked out.
A new message to the force said, "Marines refusing the COVID-19 vaccination, absent an approved administrative or medical exemption, religious accommodation or pending appeal, shall be processed for administrative separation."
Plus, Marines who are considered to have refused the shot already will have their promotions put on hold and will not deploy, and officers will be relieved of command.
The Corps does not consider a Marine to have "refused the vaccine" until any administrative, medical or religious exemptions are considered and decided - though the branch says that, as of Oct. 20, no religious exemptions have been approved for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The deadline should come as little surprise to Marines as the branch's leaders, as well as those of the Navy, have been laying out guidance and deadlines for vaccination for months. In September, leaders in both sea services announced that sailors and Marines would have 90 days to get vaccinated.
A message that followed on Oct. 6 noted that Marines had until Oct. 17 to get the first of the Moderna or Pfizer shots in order to make the deadline, since the branch will consider a Marine fully vaccinated 14 days after their final shot. At this point, Marines who are looking to stay in the service need to get the Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine before Nov. 14.
The Marine Corps said that 83% of its active force was fully vaccinated as of Oct. 20; the figure rises to 92% when factoring in partial vaccinations. By contrast, the Navy announced that 93% of active-duty sailors are fully immunized, and 98% have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
The message notes that Marines who are separated for refusing the shot "will not be eligible for involuntary separation pay and will be subject to recoupment of any unearned special or incentive pays and advance educational assistance."
The new message also states that Marine leaders will "retain authority to take any additional adverse administrative or disciplinary action they deem appropriate" in addition to administrative separation.
The Corps' policy follows that of the Navy, which released its own message two weeks ago.
