Massive Oil Slick Spotted Off Iran's Kharg Island, Cause Unknown

An apparent large oil spill spanning dozens of square miles of sea has been spotted off of Iran's main oil hub of Kharg Island, according to open source satellite imagery and reporting in both the NY Times and Reuters on Friday.

The reports cite images from Copernicus's Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3 satellites taken from monitoring May 6 through 8 which show a huge grey-and-white slick extending out to the west of Kharg Island.

The slick appears visually consistent with oil," said Leon Moreland, a researcher at the Conflict and Environment Observatory, to Reuters. He believes it to be covering an area of approximately 45 square km (or nearly 18 sq miles).

While it's unclear what may have caused it, or the extent of possible damage to Kharg Island infrastructure or possibly docked tankers, the island has been attacked by US aerial forces in the recent post.

One regional source provides the following commentary:

It could be the result of a leak. Other claims have suggested oil was pumped into the sea because storage space had run out due to the blockade. In newer images, the oil slick appeared to be moving south.

Social media users expressed concern over what appeared to be an oil spill in the satellite images.

“This must be dealt with quickly before the oil reaches the coasts of other Gulf states,” a Saudi influencer wrote on X, where he has more than 750,000 followers.

And separately a regional monitor and expert explains the following:

Synthetic aperture radar imagery shows a large surface slick emanating from the waters around Kharg Island, Iran's primary crude oil export terminal responsible for roughly 90% of the country's oil exports.

At the time of detection, multiple tankers were simultaneously loading at the Kharg Island terminal. It is not yet clear whether the spill originated from a loading operation, a vessel, subsea infrastructure, or the terminal itself.

The center boasts “multiculturalism, small classroom sizes, healthy eating and a warm, loving environment that feels like home” and staff with degrees in “education, accounting, biology, pharmacology, science, nursing and mathematics from their home countries.”

As we celebrate Victory Day for World War II –- we celebrate America’s monumental triumph over tyranny and evil in Europe, led by the might of our Armed Forces and those of our Allies. On May 8, 1945, the iron grip of Nazi Germany shattered, and news of victory swept across our great Nation and the world, marking a decisive turning point in the history of freedom.

From the legendary storming of the beaches of Normandy to the frigid, hard-fought defense during the Battle of the Bulge, the courage of countless American soldiers carried the Allied cause across the deserts of North Africa and the forests of western Europe until the forces of the Nazi regime collapsed in ruin. Their sacrifice, together with the unwavering resolve of millions of men and women on the home front, drove tyranny to its knees and paved the way for the Allied powers to secure their resounding victory against Imperial Japan nearly 4 months later.

The fight for liberty came at a staggering cost. More than 250,000 Americans laid down their lives in the fight against the Nazi regime. Their heroic sacrifice reminds us that the sacred freedoms we cherish are forged in sacrifice and must be fiercely defended both at home and abroad. Spencer Pratt won the LA mayoral debate. Could he actually win the race?

Could Spencer Pratt be Los Angeles' next mayor? The ex-reality TV villain and first-time Republican politician stunned political experts and plenty of observers when he barreled through the first mayoral debate on Wednesday night and wiped the floor with his opponents.

"The reality is no matter how many beds you give these people, they are on super meth. They are on fentanyl," Pratt thundered in an attack on his opponent Nithya Raman's ineffectiveness on the homeless problem. "The DEA statistics says 90% of this is a drug addiction problem. Councilman Raman's plan for treatment first? I will go below the Harbor Freeway tomorrow with her and we can find some of these people she's going to offer treatment for. She's going to get stabbed in the neck."

"I actually thought that [Pratt] had a strong performance," Mike Bonin, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs, told TheWrap. "I'm sure the debate organizers were worried, going in, about how the reality TV star bad boy would behave. Would he keep interrupting? But he came across as serious and passionate and funny at times."

Kamy Akhavan, managing director of USC's Center for the Political Future, said that between incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Raman, Pratt was a candidate who was "really not taken seriously" before Wednesday.

"The expectations of him were the lowest, so he had the most to gain and the least to lose," he told TheWrap.

An open NBC4 online survey, which did not require respondents to watch the debate, found the Republican candidate crushing his opponents with more than 80% support, far ahead of Bass and Raman.

Pratt's appearance underscored how outsider personalities with built-in online audiences are testing whether internet attention can disrupt traditional politics. He seemed to make a strong impression for both broadcast viewers and social media scrollers, and experts told TheWrap that, while social engagement alone won't win a mayoral race, "The Hills" star effectively tapped into voter frustrations around L.A. leadership, public safety and Hollywood's ongoing production slowdown.

Two people familiar with the case said the search of a lawmaker’s business office was related to a Biden-era investigation of possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensaries.

F.B.I. agents on Wednesday searched the business office of a powerful Democratic state legislator in Virginia who had played a key role in a high-stakes congressional redistricting fight.

The legislator, L. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, is a senior leader in the State Senate, where she has served for more than 30 years. Two people familiar with the case said the search was related to an investigation opened during the Biden administration that has continued, examining possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensary businesses.

The F.B.I. agents executed a search warrant at an office in Portsmouth, Va., for businesses that Ms. Lucas owns including a network of group homes for older adults and at a neighboring marijuana dispensary she owns, according to several people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Other locations were also searched, the people said.

Federal agents served Ms. Lucas with the search warrant as she entered a massage parlor on Wednesday morning, according to two people who spoke with her.

“Today’s actions by federal agents are about far more than one state senator; they are about power and who is allowed to use it on behalf of the people,” Ms. Lucas said in a statement on Wednesday night. “What we saw fits a clear pattern from this administration: When challenged, they try to intimidate and silence the voices who stood up to them.”

She added, “I am not backing down.”

The F.B.I. search sent shock waves through the insular world of Virginia politics. Democrats expressed a mixture of surprise and suspicion, while Republicans stayed publicly quiet even as they privately celebrated. Few in either party had many details about what was happening with Ms. Lucas.

Still, some Democrats were quick to express skepticism, nodding to the way that the increasingly politicized Justice Department has pursued inquiries into Mr. Trump’s domestic opponents and liberal organizations during his second term.

Ms. Lucas has long been a leading proponent of legal marijuana in Virginia. This year, she introduced legislation to create a regulatory framework for retail marijuana sales. The bill passed and is awaiting a signature or veto from Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat.

Ms. Spanberger declined to comment on the raid, a spokeswoman said. Jeff Ryer, the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, also declined to comment.

Ms. Lucas’s influence was crucial to the recent battle over congressional redistricting. A vocal backer of the most aggressive map possible, she insisted in public and private on a map with a 10-to-1 partisan split.

She and other Democrats argued that the new district lines were needed because of efforts by Mr. Trump and his supporters to redraw boundaries in Republican-dominated states before the midterm elections. That G.O.P. effort has come at a time when the war with Iran and high gas prices are hurting the party’s popularity.

In Virginia, Democrats currently hold six of 11 House seats, but the new map could tilt that to 10 to 1 in their favor. Republicans have appealed the new maps to the Supreme Court of Virginia, which is expected to rule on their legality soon.

In February, after Republicans complained that the proposed Virginia political map was unfair to their voters, Ms. Lucas was characteristically blunt on social media.

“You all started it,” she replied to Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas. “We,” she said, using an expletive, “finished it.”

Longtime Dem Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to resign months into new term

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, 73, said Thursday she will resign effective June 30, a surprise move less than six months after the five-term Democrat won reelection to lead the nation’s 14th-largest city.

"Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life," Lyles, 73, said in a statement Thursday. "I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth."

"As in all things politics, I am sure there will be speculation as to why I am making this decision now," the statement continued. "Simply put, I am going to spend time with my grandchildren. Like many of us, I have missed some moments with them and intend to not miss anymore."

Lyles easily won reelection in 2025 after facing questions over whether she would run again, and there were growing questions about her recent visibility and active leadership of the city.

The Charlotte Ledger reported that Lyles had been missing more City Council meetings than usual after years of regularly presiding over them. She also had not attended most monthly zoning meetings for several months — possibly longer.

WFAE reported that some in the community, private sector and city government had raised concerns about Lyles’ health and whether she could continue carrying out the responsibilities of the office. The outlet reported that Lyles had appeared confused at times during procedural discussions, including at one recent council meeting when she had to be reminded that she needed to cast a tiebreaking vote.

Asked Monday at the Government Center by a WFAE reporter whether she intended to complete her term, Lyles declined to answer directly.

"We will see," she said, just days before her resignation.

The station reported that Lyles was then escorted away from the reporter by an assistant and later by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.

Her resignation will leave the Charlotte City Council to decide who completes the remainder of her term. Critics on social media are decrying the early resignation after reelection, saying giving the council the power to pick the mayor now undermines the democratic voting process and hands power to few.

"I am very proud of my record as mayor, but I also firmly believe that true leadership includes knowing when it is time to let the next generation of leaders take over," Lyles statement added. "By leaving early, the voters will have more time to learn about their candidates. Our city is strong, our trajectory is positive, and now is the right moment for someone else to build on our progress from the past few years."

Lyles has served as Charlotte’s mayor since 2017 after previously serving on the City Council.

For months, the conventional wisdom inside Republican circles has been settled and simple: JD Vance is next. He defended the war in Iran before a press corps not exactly known for its generosity toward administration officials — and walked away with his standing improved. The room, by most accounts, was notably less adversarial than it tends to be when Leavitt or Trump takes the podium. Rubio was fluid and measured, giving the journalists little to sharpen their teeth on.

Messier Craters in Stereo

Many bright nebulae and star clusters in planet Earth's sky are associated with the name of astronomer Charles Messier from his famous 18th century catalog. His name is also given to these two large and remarkable craters on the Moon. Standouts in the dark, smooth lunar Sea of Fertility or Mare Fecunditatis, Messier (left) and Messier A have dimensions of 15 by 8 and 16 by 11 kilometers respectively. Their elongated shapes are explained by the extremely shallow-angle trajectory followed by an impactor, moving left to right, that gouged out the craters. The shallow impact also resulted in two bright rays of material extending along the surface to the right, beyond the picture. Intended to be viewed with red/blue glasses (red for the left eye), this striking stereo picture of the crater pair was recently created from high resolution scans of two images (AS11-42-6304, AS11-42-6305) taken during the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon.

Just weeks before the first Artemis 2 launch window, astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy had a last-minute idea: What if he could get the Artemis 2 astronauts to shoot the moon the same way he shoots the moon?

So McCarthy slid into the DMs (direct messages) of Artemis 2 commander and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman. He knew getting a response at such a late date was a long shot, but he couldn't pass up the chance for a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration. And the long shot came through.

"He was immediately onboard," McCarthy told Space.com in an interview. "It was a dream come true, obviously, for me, but I saw it as this very unique opportunity."

NASA's Artemis 2 mission launched on April 1, flying four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the far side of the moon that captivated people across the world.

The astronauts snapped breathtaking photos of the moon, which showed beautifully haunting views of the lunar far side that Artemis 2 crew member Christina Koch of NASA described as "the most ominous thing I've ever loved."

On Earth, McCarthy combines hundreds to thousands of photos of the moon to bring out details you can't see in a single image.

The results are colorful landscapes that look more like paintings than the gray orb we're used to seeing hang in the night sky, but the diversity he presents in his images come down to lunar spectroscopy rather than artistic interpretation.

"It's very true life in a sense that everything you're seeing is real features on the surface that your eyes just simply don't have the color sensitivity to make out on their own," McCarthy said. He explained that his approach to astrophotography is all about showing you the things your eyes can't see.

"I don't want to show you something the way your eyes see it. I want to show you something as if you had superhuman vision …

I want to show you the moon as if you had cyborg eyes, because your cyborg eyes can actually pick out the color differences," McCarthy said. "The camera becomes cyborg eyes for our vision."

"The color is naturally there, just much more subtle to your eyes," he added. Some color differences on the moon are possible to see with your eyes, using binoculars or a telescope, and there are ways to trick your eyes into noticing more of the contrast than you realize.

"If you take a normal photo of the moon with a DSLR and just completely desaturate it, you can tell the difference," McCarthy explained. "When you return it to regular saturation, it suddenly seems a little more colorful."

For his collaboration with Wiseman, McCarthy wanted to see if he could get the same colorful results with a camera from the lunar far side.

"Usually you can't get very high-fidelity color data from the far side of the moon," McCarthy said. "We've got LRO [NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter], which has some color data, but … it's too low fidelity to do the kind of saturation pumps that show the really granular geological differences in the regolith."

McCarthy outlined a plan with Wiseman and NASA's lunar photography team, which was responsible for teaching the Artemis 2 crew how to use the cameras they brought aboard the Orion capsule during their mission.

"They worked it in where he would shoot bursts in different exposures and different times, depending on where they were during the flyby," McCarthy explained.

Stacking is the key to McCarthy's lunar imagery, enabling him to turn the subtle variations of color in an image of the moon into the rich browns and blues seen in his edits.

The technique isn't a new one in the astrophotography world, but no one had ever tried it before using photos from the far side of the moon.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) reported that a Chinese citizen was detained for complicity in an attempted espionage operation, the likely target of which may have been the Andøya spaceport.

Two other suspects are abroad, likely in China. This was reported by NRK.

As part of the investigation, police conducted searches at two addresses — on the island of Andøya in Nordland and in Otta in Innlandet. PST prosecutor Thomas Blom informed the publication of this.

“The operation is linked to suspicions that a company registered in Norway served as a front for Chinese intelligence, which was attempting to obtain satellite data capable of harming Norway’s security if it fell into the hands of a foreign state,” he stated.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) also reported that two other individuals involved in the case are abroad, presumably in China. Additionally, one company is implicated in the case.

“We believe that a state actor is behind this, operating under the cover of a company registered in Norway, which in turn is owned by a company registered in Singapore, where one individual serves as the executive director,” he added.
