NGC 6072: A Complex Planetary Nebula from Webb

Why is this nebula so complex? The Webb Space Telescope has imaged a nebula in great detail that is thought to have emerged from a Sun-like star. NGC 6072 has been resolved into one of the more unusual and complex examples of planetary nebula. The featured image is in infrared light with the red color highlighting cool hydrogen gas. Study of previous images of NGC 6072 indicated several likely outflows and two disks inside the jumbled gas, while the new Webb image resolves new features likely including one disk's edge protruding on the central left. A leading origin hypothesis holds that the nebula's complexity is caused or enhanced by multiple outbursts from a star in a multi-star system near the center.

Thirteen years since Curiosity landed on Mars, engineers are finding ways to make the NASA rover even more productive.

The six-wheeled robot has been given more autonomy and the ability to multitask — improvements designed to make the most of Curiosity’s energy source, a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG).

Increased efficiency means the rover has ample power as it continues to decipher how the ancient Martian climate changed, transforming a world of lakes and rivers into the chilly desert it is today.

Curiosity recently rolled into a region filled with boxwork formations. These hardened ridges are believed to have been created by underground water billions of years ago.

Stretching for miles on this part of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain, the formations might reveal whether microbial life could have survived in the Martian subsurface eons ago, extending the period of habitability farther into when the planet was drying out.

Carrying out this detective work involves a lot of energy. Besides driving and extending a robotic arm to study rocks and cliffsides, Curiosity has a radio, cameras, and 10 science instruments that all need power.

So do the multiple heaters that keep electronics, mechanical parts, and instruments operating at their best.

Past missions like the Spirit and Opportunity rovers and the InSight lander relied on solar panels to recharge their batteries, but that technology always runs the risk of not receiving enough sunlight to provide power.

Instead, Curiosity and its younger sibling Perseverance each use their MMRTG nuclear power source, which relies on decaying plutonium pellets to create energy and recharge the rover’s batteries.

Providing ample power for the rovers’ many science instruments, MMRTGs are known for their longevity (the twin Voyager spacecraft have relied on RTGs since 1977).

But as the plutonium decays over time, it takes longer to recharge Curiosity’s batteries, leaving less energy for science each day.

The team carefully manages the rover’s daily power budget, factoring in every device that draws on the batteries.

While these components were all tested extensively before launch, they are part of complex systems that reveal their quirks only after years in the extreme Martian environment.

Dust, radiation, and sharp temperature swings bring out edge cases that engineers couldn’t have expected.

“We were more like cautious parents earlier in the mission,” said Reidar Larsen of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which built and operates the rover.

Larsen led a group of engineers who developed the new capabilities. “It’s as if our teenage rover is maturing, and we’re trusting it to take on more responsibility. As a kid, you might do one thing at a time, but as you become an adult, you learn to multitask.”

The Perseids are one of the most plentiful showers with about 50 to 100 meteors seen per hour.

This year, visibility will be hampered by an 84%-full Moon on the peak night. A few bright meteors may still be seen in the pre-dawn hours, but viewing conditions are not ideal.

NASA’s Artemis Crew Trains in Moonbound Orion Ahead of Mission

The first crew slated to fly in NASA’s Orion spacecraft during the Artemis II mission around the Moon early next year entered their spacecraft for a multi-day training at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Crew donned their spacesuits July 31 and boarded Orion to train and experience some of the conditions they can expect on their mission.

NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen participated in a suited crew test and crew equipment interface test, performing launch day and simulated orbital activities inside Orion.

“In about six months, Artemis II astronauts will journey around the Moon for the first time in 53 years,” Duffy said.

“America rallied behind Apollo because it represented the best of us – now it’s Artemis’ turn. They’re not just carrying a flag – they’re carrying the pride, power, and promise of the United States of America.”

With Orion powered on, the suited crew test was a close representation of what the crew can expect on launch day.

The crew began the day by suiting up inside the spaceport’s Multi-Operation Support Building, donning their Orion crew survival system spacesuits, boarding the zero-emission crew transportation vehicles, and entering Orion, which is currently inside the Multi-Payload Processing Facility, where engineers have loaded its propellants over the course of several weeks.

Once in Orion, the crew performed several launch day activities, including communications checkouts and suit leak checks.

For the first time, the crew was connected to the spacecraft and its communications and life control systems, and all umbilicals were connected while the spacecraft operated on full power.

Teams simulated several different ground and flight conditions to give the crew more experience managing them in real time.

Some of the activities simulated scenarios where the crew was challenged to address potential issues while in space such as leaks and failure of the air revitalization system fan, which is needed to provide oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the cabin.

Getting this hands-on experience and learning how to act fast to overcome potential challenges during flight helps ensure the crew is ready for any scenario.

The test provides astronauts the ability to train on the actual hardware they will use during flight, allowing them and support teams the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the equipment in configurations very close to what will be experienced during flight.

It also allows teams to verify compatibility between the equipment and systems with flight controller procedures, so they can make any final adjustments ahead of launch.

“It signifies the immense amount of work that our operations and development teams put into making sure we are ready for launch.” Quinn said.

“They have meticulously planned each operation, timing them to perfection – and now we put it to the test.”

Exchanging their spacesuits for cleanroom garments for the crew equipment interface test, and with the spacecraft powered off, the crew also performed many of the activities they are likely to do in flight and conducted additional equipment checks.

The crew practiced removing and stowing the foot pans on the pilot and commander seats, which will allow them to have more open space in the cabin after launch.

They also accessed the stowage lockers and familiarized themselves with cameras, associated cables and mounts, and the environmental control and life support system hardware.

In addition to getting practical experience with the actual hardware they’ll use in space, they also prepared for life in deep space, reviewing cabin labels, sleep arrangements and checklists, and the hygiene bay.

Through the Artemis campaign, NASA will send astronauts to explore the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build the foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars – for the benefit of all.

NASA plans to intercept fastest known interstellar comet

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) aims to intercept the fastest known interstellar comet. also known as 31 Atlas. that is hurling through the solar system at the speed of 58km/s.

Discovered in Chile by the NASA-funded project, Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on July 1, 2025, the comet has a diameter of 11.2km.

This icy visitor is the third confirmed interstellar object after Oumuamua (2017) and Borisov (2019).

Unlike the previous one, there are rare chances of conducting a close-up study as it approaches its perihelion (closest point to the Sun) on October 29, 2025, passing through 1.356 astronomical units from the Sun.

While intercepting 31 Atlas can be highly significant, it can pose unprecedented challenges.

According to the University of Michigan, the launch of the comet from Earth needs a delta-V (velocity change) of around 24km/s that almost matches the energy of NASA’s Dawn mission that was powered by NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory that enabled the spacecraft to orbit and explore the two bodies i.e., protoplanet Vesta and the dwarf planet Ceres in a single mission.

As the deadline approaches, this can be unfeasible to achieve. However, a launch from Mars where the comet will pass closely in early October can reduce the required delta-V to 5km/s, making it achievable with current technology.

Exclusive high-resolution images can be captured with existing Mars orbiters such as MAVEN and ESA’s Mars Express. Upon executing a successful mission, the understanding of interstellar chemistry and planetary formation can be revolutionized.

With this, scientists aim to assess organic molecules that can hint at life’s building blocks, isotopic signatures that can reveal comet’s origin, and insights into how comets have seeded Earth with water.

In the words of an astrobiologist, Dr. Sarah Johnson, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, 3I Atlas carries pristine material from another star system—studying it could reshape our knowledge of the cosmos.”

With the comet’s rapid exit expected after perihelion, NASA faces a race against time to finalize mission plans. The deadline is short but the rewards can be revolutionary.

To accurately segment plumes, the researchers developed two innovative methods: FSDINet, a dual-domain network architecture that integrates spectral features in both frequency and spatial domains for joint global-local modeling, and kMetha-Mamba, a hybrid approach that combines spectral derivative-based clustering with state-space modeling to improve weak plume detection and noise suppression.

This work lays a solid technical foundation for the data processing and emission retrieval applications of next-generation imaging carbon satellites in China. It marks a key step forward in high-resolution satellite-based monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and contributes an innovative solution to global carbon tracking and scientific mitigation efforts.

3 powerful solar flares erupt in less than 24 hours, ending weeks of calm on the sun

After more than three weeks without a powerful solar flare, the sun has suddenly ramped up its activity, firing off three M-class solar flares in less than 24 hours.

While the sun has been popping off plenty of smaller C-class flares lately, Sunday's M2.9 eruption at 10:01 a.m. EDT (1401 GMT) on Aug. 3 was the first M-class flare since July 12, according to space weather website SolarHam.com's post on X.

The flare marked the end of a 22-day lull in moderate solar flare activity.

Two more followed in rapid succession: an M2 flare at 1:05 a.m. EDT (0505) on Aug. 4 and an M1.4 peaked just 16 minutes later at 1:21 a.m. EDT (0521 GMT).

All three eruptions came from sunspot region AR 4168, which rapidly developed a more complex magnetic structure over the weekend.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation from the sun's atmosphere, caused by sudden releases of magnetic energy near sunspots.

They're classified by strength into five categories: A, B, C, M, and X. Each level represents a tenfold increase in energy output. While C-class flares are generally minor, M-class flares are moderate and can sometimes disrupt radio communications.

The most intense, X-class flares, have the potential to trigger widespread radio blackouts and even impact satellites and power grids on Earth.

According to Spaceweather.com, both active regions 4168 and 4167 now harbor unstable "delta-class" magnetic fields, an arrangement known to power strong solar eruptions, including potential X-class flares and Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

So far, no major space weather impacts have been confirmed, but the M2.9 flare may have launched a weak CME toward Earth.

Vincent Ledvina, an aurora chaser and space physics student, noted on X that modeling suggests the CME could arrive around midnight UTC on Aug. 7, with only a 12% chance of impact.

Ledvina added that Monday morning's M2 flare may have triggered a second weak CME, possibly a stealth CME, a slow and faint solar ejection that's notoriously hard to spot.

"This now marks the second Earth-directed CME from this region with potentially more to follow," he wrote.

Space weather forecaster Sara Housseal declared "Flare drought is over!" in a post after Sunday's flare.

While the eruptions are "likely nothing significant," she added later in another post that they "could result in a bump in activity in a few days," highlighting the challenges space weather forecasters face when working with "little to no data."

A limitation that stems from the lack of dedicated satellites and limited real-time imagery available to monitor faint, slow-moving CMEs.

Space weather forecasters are keeping a close eye on sunspot region 4168. Its growing complexity and flaring activity suggest the region may still have more surprises in store.

Republicans in the House Oversight Committee are pushing forward with their investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein case, issuing subpoenas this week to compel testimony from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Rocket Lab launches private Japanese radar satellite to orbit from New Zealand

Rocket Lab launched a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite for the Japanese Earth-imaging company iQPS early Tuesday morning (Aug. 5).

An Electron rocket carrying the QPS-SAR-12 satellite, nicknamed Kushinada-I, lifted off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand site on Tuesday at 12:10 a.m. EDT (0410 GMT and 4:10 p.m. local New Zealand time).

The Electron deployed Kushinada-I into a circular orbit 357 miles (575 kilometers) above Earth about 54 minutes after launch as planned, Rocket Lab announced via X.

The satellite will now "join the rest of the QPS-SAR constellation in providing high-resolution synthetic aperture radar images and Earth-monitoring services globally," Rocket Lab wrote in a description of the mission, which it called "The Harvest Goddess Thrives."

(The name is a reference to Kushinada, a Japanese goddess of harvest and prosperity.)

As its formal name suggests, QPS-SAR-12 is the 12th iQPS satellite to reach orbit. The Japanese company aims to operate a constellation of 36 SAR spacecraft, which can peer through clouds and study Earth's surface at night as well as during the day.

"The data gathered by QPS-SAR constellation has the potential to revolutionize industries and reshape the future," Rocket Lab wrote in the mission's press kit, which you can find here.

"By leveraging insights from moving object data, iQPS can unlock new economic value, enhance urban safety and security, and provide predictive analytics for agriculture, national economies, and regional markets when integrated with weather, market, and economic data," the company added.

"The Harvest Goddess Thrives" was Rocket Lab's fifth mission for iQPS and the 69th overall flight to date for the 59-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) Electron, which gives small satellites dedicated rides to orbit.

Rocket Lab also operates a suborbital version of Electron called HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron), which serves as a testbed for hypersonic technology.

And the company is developing a larger rocket called Neutron, which could debut later this year.

Space Force Zeroes in on Targeting from Orbit, but Timeline Unclear

The Space Force will finish an analysis of alternatives for how to do airborne moving target indication from orbit this fall, said Lt. Gen. Deanna M. Burt, USSF’s deputy chief for operations, cyber, and nuclear.

Burt said it will take time to develop the needed technologies to execute targeting effectively from space. “We are working with the variety of commercial entities and industry partners on, ‘What are the different phenomenologies that would allow us to [accomplish] air moving target indicators?’”

Burt said Aug. 4 during an event with AFA’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.

An analysis of alternatives for air moving target indication is “supposed to deliver this fall,” Burt said.

Pentagon officials want to leverage space for both ground and airborne moving target indication, and even zeroed out the E-7 Wedgetail airborne battle management and targeting platform in the proposed 2026 budget, rather than complete the planned purchase to replace aging E-3 AWACS jets.

But others have pushed back on that plan. Nearly 20 former general officers signed a letter urging Congress to restore funding for the Wedgetail program, arguing that space-based targeting is not ready for prime time.

“Maybe we will one day, but the challenges there are quite difficult,” said retired Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, former head of Air Force Space Command and U.S. Strategic Command, during an AFA roundtable last month.

“You not only have to provide the fighter pilot or the bomber pilot position of the threat, velocity of the threat, direction of the threat, but altitude of the threat. And that’s a lot tougher mission than GMTI, where you’re just tracking movement of vehicles on the ground.

And so I’m not sanguine that we’re going to quickly field an AMTI capability that we definitely need to enhance our ability to gain and maintain air superiority and to deter an adversary from thinking they can do the same by putting that capability into space.”

Asked if the Space Force can field an AMTI capability in the next two years, Burt demurred, but reiterated the need to develop different methods of targeting.

“I think the important part here is the analysis of alternatives that will be delivered this fall, I think, [is] going to be very telling,” she said. “As I said earlier, we believe it’s multiple phenomenologies. There’s no one silver bullet of a phenomenology that’s going to do this.”

Congress is ready to fund a solution. Lawmakers included $2 billion in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for “air moving target indicator military satellites.”

Burt said the “additional funding was really about how to do the [research and development] of these various capabilities, and how to flesh them out and see how they would operate,” Burt said.

Guardians across the U.S. Space Force are lacing up and locking in as regional competitions are now underway in preparation for Guardian Arena III – the service’s premier test of strength, mental agility and cohesive teamwork.

Set to take place Dec. 8-9 at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, the third annual Guardian Arena will bring together 35 elite three-person teams from Space Force units across the country.

“This competition is designed to forge stronger, more resilient Guardians,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna.

“It’s a test of strength, endurance and mental sharpness – demanding a commitment to push your team’s limits and master your physical and cognitive abilities.”

Regional tryouts began July 28 and run through Aug. 15, with each unit hosting its own selection events. The goal is to identify and elevate top-performing Guardians who will represent their units at the December finals.

Inspired by the grit of Roman gladiators, Guardian Arena is more than a competition, it’s a showcase of the Guardian Spirit.

The event strengthens Space Force culture, sharpens operational readiness, and fosters a sense of unity and purpose across the ranks.

I write to encourage the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) to take any appropriate steps to aid in Texas state law enforcement efforts to locate or arrest potential lawbreakers who have fled the state. As a maneuver to avoid legislative responsibilities, on August 3, 2025, many members in the Texas House of Representatives absconded from the state. Their stated goal was to prevent the legislature from properly meeting, in violation of their oath of office.1 By leaving the State of Texas, these legislators intend to prevent the existence of a quorum in the Texas House of Representatives. Without a quorum, no legislative activity can proceed.

In a representative democracy, we resolve our differences by debating and voting, not by running away. Some Texas legislators have fled to New York, and others have fled to Illinois. 2 Since these state legislators are currently outside of Texas, the Texas Department of Public

Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers. Out-of-state actors have made public comments about protecting the Texas legislators who are currently hiding out of state from any accountability for their actions.3 I request the FBI’s assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law. The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime.4 Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses.5

This is a time-sensitive matter. The Texas Legislature is currently in a special session, called by Governor Abbott, with around two weeks left. As Governor Abbott noted, when the Governor calls a Special Session, the “[l]egislature shall meet.”6 The absence of a quorum prevents key votes on important areas of concern for Texans. For example, the recent Kerrville floods, which caused unbearable tragedy and destruction, is just one issue that needs to be addressed in this legislative session.

I am encouraged by the strong leadership from Governor Abbott on this matter. Governor Abbott and Texas state law enforcement officers are doing what they can within the confines of the law, but federal help may be necessary. These legislators have committed potential criminal acts in their rush to avoid their constitutional responsibilities and must be fully investigated and held accountable. I urge you to work with Texas public officials to provide them the support they need.

Ukraine is set to introduce a national program of military instruction targeting teenagers as young as 14, a senior Defense Ministry official revealed on Monday, amid struggles to maintain recruitment levels.

Ukraine’s armed forces rely on mass compulsory conscription, but the campaign has faced growing public resistance and complaints about its abusive execution.

The authorities, meanwhile, are pushing for early-stage education to instill what they describe as a nationwide culture of resistance.

Igor Khort, the acting head of the Defense Ministry department overseeing Ukraine’s national resistance policy, outlined the plan at a forum in Kiev.

He said students will begin instruction through a required curriculum titled ‘Defense of Ukraine’, and take part in organized paramilitary games.

University students will be expected to complete more in-depth coursework to prepare them mentally for eventual conscription. ”This is not about developing combat skills. It’s about instilling motivation,” Khort stated.

“The course Basics of National Resistance will be mandatory for both boys and girls. If someone doesn’t want to participate, they can leave the college.”

Khort noted that basic training will be required for all Ukrainians under 61, with programs made broadly accessible.

Paramilitary education for Ukrainian youth has existed in various forms since the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, with far-right organizations often taking the lead in shaping ideological and tactical instruction for children.

In April, German journalists published footage of what the report described as a covert “military-style boot camp” for Ukrainian teens, one of several of its kind.

One teen participant was seen wearing insignia in the style of Nazi Germany, a recurring theme among Ukraine’s ultranationalist factions and some military units.

ExxonMobil has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) to restart operations that have been suspended for a decade in the conflict-ridden North African nation.

In a statement on Monday, NOC said the deal will enable ExxonMobil to carry out detailed technical studies of four offshore blocks near Libya’s northwest coast and the Sirte Basin.

“This MoU establishes a geological and geophysical study to identify the hydrocarbon resources in these blocks,” the corporation stated, adding it “paves the way for cooperation and the resumption of the partnership between NOC and ExxonMobil, which aims to restart its activities in Libya after a decade-long hiatus.”

The US company had previously signed an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement with Libya in 2007 to explore four offshore blocks in the Sirte Basin, covering approximately 2.5 million acres.

However, in 2013, they scaled back operations, citing security risks and unreliable returns amid escalating instability.

The oil-rich country has remained fractured and volatile since the NATO-backed 2011 uprising that ousted and killed longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya holds Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, with an estimated 48 billion barrels – representing 41% of the continent’s total as of 2024 – according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Last month, NOC launched an energy exploration tender – its first major licensing round in nearly 18 years – in a bid to revive its oil sector, which has faced repeated disruptions from militia violence and political rivalries.

An official told Bloomberg that 37 international oil majors, including US multinational Chevron, French energy giant TotalEnergies, and Italy’s Eni, were participating in the public licensing round.

On Monday, NOC confirmed that ExxonMobil was among those that expressed interest in the bid, which include 22 offshore and onshore blocks for exploration.

Masoud Suleman, chairman of the NOC Board of Directors, said the terms of the latest deal with the world’s largest publicly traded energy company are now “more favorable” than in the past.

Russian agents have arrested a man accused of plotting to assassinate a general director of a defense industry enterprise on behalf of Ukraine, the Federal Security Service (FSB) has said.

The suspect also reportedly admitted he had been spying on the Russian army since last summer.

In a statement on Tuesday, the FSB said that a Russian national had made contact with a representative of an unnamed pro-Ukrainian terrorist group via Telegram.

He was ordered to travel to Bryansk Region which borders Ukraine, to recover a drone-dropped cache containing firearms and explosives, the agency said.

The weapons were intended for use in an assassination attempt on the head of a defense industrial facility in Belgorod, the FSB said. The suspect is now charged with high treason and faces up to life in prison.

The FSB also released a video in which the man confesses that since June 2024, while serving with Russian forces on the conflict frontline in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, he relayed to Kiev data on the whereabouts of Russian army personnel and hardware as well as positions of electronic warfare and air defense systems.

In addition, he confessed to coordinating Ukrainian missile and artillery attacks and transmitting photographs and contact information of Russian military personnel.

The footage released by the FSB also shows the agency’s operatives driving up to the suspect in a minivan in a rural area. Within moments, the man, who is carrying a large backpack, is seen being pinned to the ground.

Another part of the video shows a forest stash containing what appears to be explosives and a handgun.

Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of organizing multiple sabotage and assassination attempts on Russian territory in recent months, including attacks targeting military commanders and other high-profile figures.

A video showing Russian air defense troops using assault rifles against Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been obtained by RT. The footage was recorded during an attack on a freight train in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region.

Russian drone operators intercepted a signal from the Ukrainian drone and reported its location and designated targets to an air defense unit, one of the soldiers who took part in the defensive operation told RT’s Vlad Andrysta.

The air defense troops took up defensive positions and met the incoming UAVs with gunfire. The video provided by the military shows a large black craft flying at low altitude exploding midair after being hit by bullets. A second drone is seen sharing the same fate.

Russian troops shot down a total of six drones in the engagement, including four large drones, according to a soldier with the nickname ‘Dushman’. None of the Ukrainian UAVs reached the target and the freight train left the area safely, according to the military.

The incident took place near Tokmak, Zaporozhye Region. According to ‘Dushman’, who serves with a Russian anti-aircraft missile battalion, Ukrainian drones increasingly target trains and gas stations in the area, endangering the civilian population.

Earlier on Monday, regional officials in Volgograd Region, southern Russia, reported that Ukrainian drone attacks had disrupted passenger rail traffic and caused a power outage in the area overnight.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow said 61 fixed-wing drones had been downed during the raid, with around half intercepted over the Black Sea and Voronezh Region.

Officials in Kiev have described Ukrainian drone operations as an attempt to increase pressure on Moscow and force an unconditional ceasefire.

The Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, insisting their own strikes are aimed strictly at military-related targets.

Several senior Ukrainian officials have been detained on suspicion of receiving up to 30% in kickbacks from military contracts, anti-corruption agencies have announced.

The arrests came just days after Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky was forced to abandon his attempts to restrict the independence of the anti-graft agencies.

In a statement on Saturday, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) said they had uncovered a “large-scale” corruption scheme involving contracts for the purchase of drones and electronic warfare systems for the Ukrainian army.

Ukrainian media has identified three of the four suspects – Aleksey Kuznetsov, an MP with Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, former Lugansk Governor Sergey Gayday, and Rubezhansky district head Andrey Yurchenko.

Between 2024 and 2025, the group allegedly created a scheme to steal budget funds allocated by local governments for defense needs.

One part of the scheme involved awarding a contract for electronic warfare systems at an intentionally inflated price, with the group receiving illegal benefits worth 30% of the contract amount.

A separate contract for FPV drones, worth around $240,000, was allegedly overpriced by around $80,000, with the company’s officials later handing over kickbacks to members of the group, the investigators said.

The same day, Zelensky stated that he had met with the heads of NABU and SAPO to discuss the scandal, calling it “absolutely immoral” and thanked the agencies for their good work.

Two weeks earlier Zelensky had attempted to bring both bodies under government control only for street protests to force him to sign off on their independence last week.

Russian Special Ops Forces Capture Three British “Soldiers”

If true, this adds a new twist to the war in Ukraine. I first heard this claim a couple of days ago on BORZZIKMAN’s channel… The Russians captured three Brits in a small town west of Odessa. I was leery of reporting it without additional confirmation.

Then I found another source… the Eurasia Daily, which reported that Lieutenant Colonel Richard Carroll, and Colonel Edward Blake, both active-duty officers of the British Army, along with an as-yet-unidentified agent of British MI-6 (Intelligence) were captured during a daring raid by Russian Special Forces, in the city of Ohakiv. That city is shown on the scalable map below:

My longtime intelligence colleague, whom I know from working in the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) and whom I fully trust, told me that Russian special forces landed from several ships and infiltrated the command center of the Ukrainian armed forces. They captured British soldiers who coordinated the use of British missiles and drones against Russian troops and civilian targets.

While I cannot rule out the possibility that this is circular reporting, I think the information is credible.

Trump’s golf buddy, Steve Witkoff, was supposed to go to Moscow for talks on Saturday, but the trip was pushed back, with no explanation. Now there are reports that Witkoff’s mission is to try to get the Russians to release the three British operatives. If I was Putin I would tell Witkoff something along these lines:

Putin: Mr. Witkoff, if the Mexican drug cartels were launching drones into Texas and killing civilians in San Antonio and Austin, would the United States take steps to eliminate that threat?

Witkoff: Yes Mr. President, we would not permit those attacks to go unanswered.

Putin: And what would Mr. Trump’s reaction be if, after he ordered Delta Force to raid the headquarters of the drug cartel, your soldiers captured two Chinese military officers and one Chinese intelligence officer, and that they possessed detailed documents outlining plans for future attacks inside the United States?

Witkoff: Well… uhh, umm… I am pretty sure that President Trump would want to make an example of them in order to send a strong message to the Chinese to cease all actions that threaten the lives of American citizens.

Putin: Precisely. Now you understand our position with respect to these British terrorists. They were not operating under the protection of the Geneva Convention, they are terrorist instigators and will be punished according to Russian law. However, there is a way out of this dilemma for both Britain and NATO: End your financial and military support for Ukraine immediately; recognize Russia’s sovereignty over the Republics of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporhyzhia and Kherson; withdraw your missiles from Poland and Romania, which present a potential existential threat to my country; end the economic sanctions the West has unjustly imposed on Russia; return our stolen assets, including the properties in the United States that President Obama wrongfully seized; and agree to sit down and negotiate, using the draft treaty I presented to President Biden in December 2021.

Witkoff: (Gulp and stuttering) Mr. President… I… uh… I’m not empowered to make any of those concessions. I must consult with President Trump.

Putin: Good. Make sure he understands our position and thank you for your attention to this matter. Have a safe trip home.

One can dream, can’t one? I am inclined to believe that the report of the capture of the three British terrorist spies is genuine because both the UK and Trump have not been issuing belligerent threats against Russia for the last couple of days. Russia holds some very valuable trump cards.

Two analysts who helped Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan discredit President Donald Trump through weak or phony intelligence on Russian election interference continue to cash paychecks from the agency, according to a former CIA operations officer.

“At least two still do work there. That doesn’t mean that all of the other people have left. Those are just the two that I’m aware of,” former CIA Operations Officer Bryan Dean Wright told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

One of former authors remains in possession of a “blue badge,” meaning they remain a CIA employee, while another possesses a “green badge” and continues to do work for the agency as a contractor, Wright said. Others may retain their security clearances.

Wright has not held back his opinion about his former boss: He said in a recent op-ed that he should “rot in prison” for undermining the integrity of the Republic.

“These men thought they knew what was best for America, and they didn’t give a damn what voters like you thought,” he wrote.

Brennan — whose tenure at CIA spanned decades — likely cultivated generations of like-minded CIA employees, Wright said. The former CIA director’s influence probably continues to shape the agency’s culture by way of mentorships, friendships, promotion panels and hiring offices.

The CIA did not respond to requests for comment. A request for comment from Brennan through his consulting firm WestExec Advisors did not receive a reply.

Documents declassified by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in recent days have revealed that President Barack Obama’s intelligence chiefs spun, cherrypicked and in some cases wholly manufactured raw intelligence reports to support the narrative — predetermined in leaks to the media — that Russian President Vladimir Putin had a “clear preference” for Trump and “aspired to help his election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton.”

Britain’s Secret War: Russian commando seizes high ranking British agents in Ukraine War

A Spetsnaz commando from the “Alfa” and “Vympel” special forces units reportedly carried out a daring nighttime operation behind enemy lines in Ochakov, in the Nikolaev region, and “abducted” several British officers involved in the attacks on Crimea and Russia.

About 10 days ago, shrouded in thick fog, a commando from the “Alfa” and “Vympel” units

—the elite FSB Special Forces, whose primary mission currently lies in the fight against terrorism and organized crime, the rescue of hostages, and the protection of nuclear power plants

—stealthily entered the Ukrainian area of Kinburn Spit, south of Nikolaev, aboard three speedboats, quickly reaching one of the most strategic bases of the Ukrainian naval forces, located near Ochakov.

The primary objective of the operation codenamed “SKAT-12,” carefully prepared for nearly two months, was to capture key figures and obtain irrefutable evidence of foreign control of the war against Russia.

Russian intelligence conducted intensive monitoring before launching the operation: using sophisticated espionage tools aimed at the Ukrainian fleet base, they recorded the movements of figures whose profiles did not match those of Ukrainian military personnel.

Increased radio communication in English and nighttime helicopter patrols with their transponders turned off would later confirm and reveal the presence of foreign specialists.

The FSB had known for months about the presence of British officers and special forces in the area.

As early as April 2024, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officially declared that the British Special Boat Service had been operating in Ukraine and had assisted Ukrainian forces in carrying out sabotage attempts and operations against Russian forces (Reuters, April 11, 2024).

After the recent massive NATO/Kiev attacks using British Storm Shadow missiles on Crimea and the Kerch Bridge, Russia began preparing retaliation—an asymmetric, unexpected, and harsh response.

Thus, on the night of July 18, around 2:40 a.m., three speedboats carrying Russian commandos reached the designated stretch of coast.

The weather conditions, with low clouds, strong winds, and the complete absence of moonlight, made for an ideal penetration.

The group consisted primarily of veterans of the legendary Alpha Special Forces, commanded by a reserve colonel known by the call sign “Scarface,” who had extensive experience conducting Special Operations in Chechnya, Syria, and Donbass.

The first phase—penetration and clearing of the outer perimeter—took no more than five minutes.

The Russian Spetsnaz silently eliminated the Ukrainian guards and opened access to the command bunker, where they captured three British Army officers.

The names of these three prisoners have been released. They are reportedly:

– Colonel Edward Blake, an officer in the 77th PsyOps (Psychological Operations) special unit, a specialist in strategic destabilization;

– Lieutenant Colonel Richard Carroll, a representative of the British Ministry of Defense who had previously participated in operations in the Middle East;

– an unidentified MI6 (British intelligence) agent who accompanied the British delegation under the guise of a cybersecurity consultant.

The British officers were reportedly stunned and tied up within seconds, without a single shot being fired.

Within 15 minutes of the operation, the Spetsnaz had fled the area, leaving false trails and evading Ukrainian UAV systems.

In addition to the “abduction” of the three British officers, compromising intelligence materials, diplomatic passports, organizational charts of subordinate Ukrainian units, and plans for further sabotage and terrorist attacks on Russian soil were also reportedly seized.

London reportedly appealed to the Russian Ministry of Defense, demanding the return of the British officers “missing” in Ukraine, claiming that the arrested were in Ukraine privately as tourists and that their presence in Ochakov was entirely accidental.

The three “supposedly only wanted to visit some sites on the coast, the scene of World War II battles.”

However, the Russians are NOT aware that the detained British “tourists” were equipped with beach towels and cameras, while maps marking strategic targets in Crimea, diagrams of defense systems, and other items were found as documents marked “Secret,” including sensitive instructions on cooperation with Ukrainian UAV operators.

The United States could soon ease its rules for flying commercial drones beyond an operator’s direct line of sight, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed Tuesday at a press briefing.

The 731-page proposed regulation would eliminate the current case-by-case, waiver-based process needed to fly a drone Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS).

The shift could “unleash American drone dominance” and have wide-reaching affects on the manufacturing, farming, energy production, filmmaking, delivery and medical industries, Duffy said.

Remotely piloted drones could travel over longer distances to deliver packages, inspect infrastructure and assist in multi-acre farming tasks.

“Industry needs this rule to make sure they can use this technology that’s going to allow them to do business more efficiently and effectively,” he said.

Aircraft would fly at or below 400 feet above ground level, and some could weigh up to 1,320 lbs.

Detection technology would prevent drones from interfering with “operations and traffic patterns at airports, heliports, seaplane bases, space launch” and more sites, the proposal’s fact cheek says.

Both recreational pilots and commercial operators are currently required to keep their drones within either the pilot’s or a visual observer’s unaided line of sight, per FAA guidance.

The proposed rule would scrap that. Industry leaders have 60 days for comment before it is put into effect. “Today we have drones in operation in our skies. It’s not as regulated perhaps as it should be.

It’s done on an ad hoc basis, which makes it very, very difficult to manage, and it makes for an uneven playing field as well which is frankly a headwind,” FAA Administrator Brian Bedford said.

The FAA and DOT will partner with TSA to ensure that operations supervisors and flight coordinators are properly vetted, Duffy said.

DHS added Israel provision for funding grants in April

FEMA maintains its own set of terms and conditions for Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) recipients. These apply, however, in addition to the DHS’s own terms and conditions as FEMA is a part of DHS.

The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed to Just the News that the agency added a contentious provision to its terms and conditions requiring that funding recipients not support boycotts of Israeli companies in April 2025.

A Reuters report on Monday stated that the Trump administration had linked $1.9 billion in disaster aid to the Israel requirement, leading to widespread outcry.

DHS on Monday stated that the Federal Emergency Management Agency did not include any requirements related to Israel in its notices of funding opportunities (NOFO).

“There is NO FEMA requirement tied to Israel in any current NOFO. No states have lost funding, and no new conditions have been imposed,” DHS posted on X. “FEMA grants remain governed by existing law and policy and not political litmus tests. DHS will enforce all anti-discrimination laws and policies, including as it relates to the BDS movement, which is expressly grounded in antisemitism. Those who engage in racial discrimination should not receive a single dollar of federal funding.”

FEMA maintains its own set of terms and conditions for Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) recipients. These apply, however, in addition to the DHS’s own terms and conditions as FEMA is a part of DHS. The DHS statement is accurate in that FEMA’s terms and conditions did not include an Israel provision, though the overarching DHS terms did, meaning that the Israel provision would have theoretically applied to FEMA grants.

At issue was a part of the DHS terms and conditions that included an Israel boycott provision under its anti-discrimination clause. The statement read as follows:

“Discriminatory prohibited boycott means refusing to deal, cutting commercial relations, or otherwise limiting commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies or with companies doing business in or with Israel or authorized by, licensed by, or organized under the laws of Israel to do business.”

The former spy chief who organized and co-authored the infamous Hunter Biden laptop letter ahead of the 2020 election also played a key role in helping Hillary Clinton in 2016 smear Donald Trump by tying him to Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Mike Morell, the former acting CIA director, injected into the American political bloodstream the idea that Trump was an “agent” of Putin and Russia, a refrain that would be repeated over and over again by the Clinton campaign.

Similar to recruiting 51 ex-spies in 2020 to falsely claim the laptop was somehow tied to Russia, Morell also led a letter in 2016 signed by over 50 former national security officials who insinuated Trump had nefarious links to Putin’s Russia.

Morell’s claims would be heavily relied upon by the Clinton campaign throughout the summer and fall of 2016, and Clinton would personally and repeatedly tout Morell’s endorsement and his claims about Trump and Putin.

Newly declassified evidence shows the FBI was alerted to intelligence in 2016 indicating Clinton planned to smear Trump by linking him to Russia in an effort to distract from her scandal surrounding the sending of classified emails on an illicit email server.

That same intelligence, gathered from Russia, also suggested the FBI's leaders played right into the campaign's strategy by conducting a sweeping investigation into false claims of Trump-Russia collusion.

Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri strongly implied in a 2017 Washington Post article that the Clinton campaign had sought Morell out in the summer of 2016 to encourage him to weigh in publicly about Trump and Russia, and Clinton herself also hinted at this in her 2017 campaign memoir, What Happened.

Morrell told the New York Times that he decided to weigh in in 2016 on his own and not due to outside considerations.

As reported by Just the News, public records show Clinton herself, in coordination with Palmieri, her campaign general counsel Marc Elias, campaign manager Robby Mook, campaign chairman John Podesta, campaign policy adviser Jake Sullivan, and others launched an effort to link Trump to Putin as the 2016 battle for the White House raged.

The Clinton campaign also funded through its law firm British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s now-discredited dossier and spread the false claims of a secret communications channel between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank.

Newly declassified evidence dubbed the "Clinton Plan intelligence" included purported intercepted communications from a George Soros ally suggesting that Clinton’s 2016 campaign against Trump was plotting an effort to demonize the Republican nominee by connecting him to Putin, and that the Clinton campaign expected the FBI would put more fuel on the fire.

Since the founding of Hamas in 1987, Israeli, American and Palestinian officials have repeatedly acknowledged that Israel did indeed help create and fund the Islamist group.

The point made by many of these officials is not that Israel “allowed” the rise of Hamas or that Hamas emerged in response to Israeli “occupation” of Palestine. Rather, their point was and is that Israel’s intelligence agencies actively helped create and finance the Hamas group.

As the officials cited below make clear, the overall goal of supporting Hamas has been to thwart the creation of a Palestinian state and avert the implementation of a two-state solution to the Palestine question. From Israel’s perspective, a two-state solution would reduce Israel’s territory to the internationally recognized pre-1967 borders, prohibit any future territorial expansion, and prevent the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.

More specifically, supporting the Islamist Hamas group has served several Israeli objectives at once: first, it undermined Yasser Arafat’s secular nationalist PLO; second, it helped prevent the implementation of the 1993 Oslo Accords; third, it undermined the Palestinian National Authority and isolated Gaza from the Westbank; fourth, it impeded Western support for the Palestinian cause; and fifth, it justified Israeli (counter-)attacks on Palestinian territory.

In other words, by secretly supporting a group that does not recognize the existence of the state of Israel and does not accept a two-state solution, Israel does not have to accept the existence of a Palestinian state and does not have to support a two-state solution, either.

It is sometimes argued that while Israel initially supported the creation of Hamas, the Islamist group got out of control and Israeli officials came to regret their support (the “blowback theory”).

While this is certainly true for some Israeli officials and for the Israeli population affected by Hamas rockets and terrorist attacks, it is not true for Israeli grand strategists, as the quotes below make clear: for them, Hamas has continued to serve its intended purpose even after the Oslo Accords in 1993 and after Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005.

For the grand strategists, the presence of Hamas in the remaining Palestinian territories might provide, one day, the necessary pretext for a “final solution” to the Palestinian question.

In an interview with L’Espresso, Arafat stated:

“Hamas was constituted with the support of Israel. The aim was to create an organization antagonistic to the PLO. They received financing and training from Israel. They have continued to benefit from permits and authorizations, while we have been limited, even to build a tomato factory. Rabin himself defined it as a fatal error. Some collaborationists of Israel are involved in these [terror] attacks,” he said. “We have proof, and we are placing it at the disposal of the Italian government.”

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Arafat stated:

“We are doing everything to stop the violence. But Hamas is a creature of Israel which at the time of Prime Minister [Yitzhak] Shamir [the late 1980s, when Hamas arose], gave them money and more than 700 institutions, among them schools, universities and mosques. Even [former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak] Rabin ended up admitting it, when I charged him with it, in the presence of [Egpytian President Hosni] Mubarak.”

The New York Times published never-before-seen photos from inside Jeffrey Epstein's erie seven-story Upper East Side townhouse on Tuesday, revealing surveillance cameras placed in bedrooms and a first edition of "Lolita" prominently displayed throughout the New York City mansion.

Among the bizarre scenes is a macabre sculpture of a woman in a bridal gown dangling from a rope greeting visitors in the entryway, alongside dozens of framed fake eyeballs in a display that raises serious questions about what really went on behind closed doors.

A copy of “Lolita,” the 1955 novel where a deviant repeatedly rapes a 12-year-old girl with whom he has become obsessed, was also spotted in an office.

Ehud Barak, former prime minister of Israel, and his wife noted the great diversity of guests. “There is no limit to your curiosity,” they wrote in their message, which was compiled with others in January 2016. “You are like a closed book to many of them but you know everything about everyone.”

The media mogul Mortimer Zuckerman suggested ingredients for a meal that would reflect the culture of the mansion: a simple salad and whatever else “would enhance Jeffrey’s sexual performance.”

And the director Woody Allen described how the dinners reminded him of Dracula’s castle, “where Lugosi has three young female vampires who service the place.”

The freshly published photos have slowly emerged over the years as part of the mountain of evidence that came to light when Epstein was finally arrested in 2019 on child sex-trafficking charges.

The photos are the latest development in the ongoing Epstein saga, which continues to generate controversy after the Department of Justice and the FBI released a joint memo last month claiming that an "exhaustive review" of evidence from Epstein's death definitively ruled out murder.

"After a thorough investigation, FBI investigators concluded that Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on August 10, 2019," the memo reads.

The agencies also denied the existence of a "client list" tied to Epstein, directly contradicting earlier remarks by Attorney General Pam Bondi. Bondi had previously suggested on Fox News that such a list was "sitting on my desk" for review, igniting speculation about Epstein's possible blackmailing of globalist elites.

Four years later, then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s COVID-19 shot mandate still stirs emotions from all those affected. While there are now avenues for some service members to be reinstated, few have expressed interest when compared to the tens of thousands no longer serving.

After examining the COVID-19 reinstatement process for service members affected by the now-rescinded shot mandate, Stuart Scheller took to social media to share his observations. Scheller currently serves as Senior Adviser to the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.

In the July 26 post, one of the comments Scheller wrote has been an ongoing topic of concern…and debate. He said:

…many who exited the service because of poor treatment over the shot refusal want retribution. I get tagged every day with posts questioning when commanders at every level of the military will be thrown in jail for “illegally enforcing the COVID vaccine.” That’s not going to happen. Time to move forward.

On July 28, J.M. Phelps reached out to Scheller, offering him the opportunity to clarify his comments. A public statement has not been returned.

Several current and former service members were also taken aback, having strongly advocated for the past few years that many senior military leaders be held accountable for forcing the shot. Dr. Chase Spears, a retired U.S. Army public affairs officer, writer, and host of the Finding Your Spine podcast, was one of those who pushed back.

Dr. Spears’ post resonated with many who agreed. And after several exchanges of opinion on the topic, Timothy Parlatore, the founder and managing partner of Parlatore Law Group, chimed in. One of his posts initiated a debate about the relationship between military commanders and military lawyers, as it relates to the previous enforcement of the COVID-19 shot mandate.

Air Force Col. (Ret.) Rob Maness took a strong objection to Attorney Timothy Parlatore’s defense of commanders, expressing in an opinion piece Commanders Must Face Accountability for the Unlawful Vaccine Mandate.”

Maness, a former bomber squadron commander, host of the Rob Maness Show, and signer of the Declaration of Military Accountability, spoke to The Gateway Pundit. “When I saw Mr. Parlatore’s comment about the legal advice being required to be followed by commanders, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “That’s not even close to the truth and is the opposite of what most commanders should believe and is the opposite of what the reality is.”

“Commanders decide, lawyers advise,” he shared, saying “that’s the reality we’re taught as commanders.”
