The Florida Department of Education on Friday sent a scathing letter to Alachua County School Board Chair Sarah Rockwell in response to her now-deleted social media post celebrating the death of Hulk Hogan as “one less MAGA,” and the board’s attempt to silence a parent at Thursday’s school board meeting.

“That concern has now been reaffirmed by your decision to allow the rights of a parent defending a conservative position to be violated at the July 31, 2025, Alachua County School Board Meeting,” he continued. “Your conduct during this meeting was inexcusable. You should be ashamed of your failure as a board member, let alone the board chair,”

At the meeting, a parent — now identified as Jeremy Clepper — called on Rockwell to resign over her comments about WWE superstar Hogan. Rockwell made a comment saying: “Oh, did Hulk die? I didn’t even know. Good. One less MAGA in the world.” The comment went viral before she deleted it, and Rockwell has since issued an apology for her “cruel and flippant comment.”

“Rockwell, you cheered for the death of MAGA. You don’t have to be a member of MAGA. I’m not a member of MAGA. I have loved ones and friends that are — and you cheered for that,” Clepper said, according to a video of the meeting post to social media. “You didn’t apologize, that’s such back-stepping. You’re a PhD. Aren’t you highly educated woman that knows the exact meaning behind her words? Aren’t you? You know what you said, and you should step down. You’re a disgusting, vile human being.”

After Clepper criticized Rockwell, another board member appeared to call on law enforcement to remove him from the meeting. As an officer approached Clepper, the school board backtracked and said their attorney advised them to not have him removed.

For students in Illinois, mental health screenings will soon be required alongside annual vision and hearing exams.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Thursday that will require public school students in grades 3 through 12 in the state to undergo a mental health screening each year.

The change will go into effect in the 2027-2028 school year with at least one screening per student required annually,according to a press release from Pritzker's office.

Pritzker also said the new legislation makes Illinois the first state to mandate universal mental health assessments for public school students.

"At a time when our kids are struggling with anxiety and depression more than ever before, it's our responsibility to ensure that young people have all the support that they need to get the help that they deserve," Pritzker said in remarks at the signing ceremony.

"Our goal is an integrated, comprehensive approach to quality mental and behavioral health services for young people across the state," Pritzker added, saying the legislation will pave the way for schools to receive resources and support to implement the new push for screenings.

The bill, SB1560, encourages schools to connect student caregivers and parents with the Behavioral Health Care and Ongoing Navigation or BEACON Portal, a tool launched in January that can provide information about available mental health resources and services.

Illinois' move comes two months after the Trump administration pulled funding for about $1 billion in mental health grants. The Department of Education said in May that the grants would be discontinued because the money was going to "race-based actions" instead of mental health services in schools.

This year that makes post-midnight, mostly moonless skies in early August very popular with late night skygazers. How can you tell a Delta Aquariid from a Perseid meteor? The streaks of Perseid meteors can be traced back to an apparent radiant in the constellation Perseus. Delta Aquariids appear to emerge from the more southerly constellation Aquarius, beyond the top left of this frame. The letter to recently-installed Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy condemns the President and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought’s illegal impoundment of funding approved by a bipartisan Congress for the current fiscal year, and highlights that even proposed cuts from the President’s Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget request have further imperiled jobs and American competitiveness in space innovation in states across the U.S.

“Amidst the threat of looming cuts, NASA has already lost over 2,000 senior-level employees at NASA centers in Maryland, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Alabama, and Ohio.

These losses will deprive NASA of key expertise on science, human space flight, and mission support. In blatant violation of law and complete disregard for the authority of Congress, the President’s budget request has already done significant damage to American space exploration and innovation,” the Senators wrote.

The letter comes as the Senate has advanced in recent weeks its bipartisan NASA funding bill which rejects the deep cuts proposed by President Donald Trump in his FY26 budget.

The President’s proposed budget would have slashed NASA’s overall funding by 25 percent, including a 47 percent cut to NASA Science funding, the smallest proposed NASA operating budget since 1961.

Despite the controversies, Pelosi has consistently claimed she is not involved in her husband’s investment decisions. She also supports a proposed bill to ban stock trading by members of Congress.

“The American people deserve confidence that their elected leaders are serving the public interest — not their personal portfolios,” Pelosi said.

Stock trading by lawmakers has long been a bipartisan issue, especially as many have seen their wealth grow while in office. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it emerged that several members of Congress traded stocks based on privileged information before it became public.Existing insider trading laws don’t always apply to the kinds of briefings and updates lawmakers receive.

The proposed legislation would immediately prohibit elected officials—including the president—from buying stocks. It would also bar them from selling stocks for 90 days after the law is enacted. However, full divestment from covered investments would only be required at the start of the official’s next term—effectively exempting a term-limited president from this requirement.

NASA unveils 9 stunning snapshots of the cosmos in X-ray vision: Space photo of the week

This new collection of images from NASA's Chandra space telescope — which launched in 1999 — shows what different objects in space look like with an added layer of X-ray vision.

While the Hubble Space Telescope images the cosmos in mostly visible light and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) relies on infrared light that's beyond the limits of human vision, Chandra focuses only on high-energy X-ray light.

Each of these space telescopes therefore sees the universe through a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and combining these enables researchers to study the cosmos in greater detail.

Chandra's ability to see in X-ray light means it can detect hot, energetic regions like black holes, supernova remnants and pockets of super-hot gas. In the newly released images, these energetic X-rays are shown in pink and purple hues.

The top row shows N79 (left), a region of star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is a small satellite neighbor galaxy to the Milky Way. In Chandra's image, N79 blazes with hot gas shaped by energetic stars.

NGC 2146 (middle) is a spiral galaxy bursting with X-ray-emitting phenomena like supernova remnants and winds from giant stars. And IC 348 (right) is another star-forming region that shimmers with reflective interstellar wisps and scattered young stars.

The middle row shows two spiral galaxies: the Milky Way-like M83 (left) and NGC 1068 (right).

The latter galaxy's core is illuminated by high-energy X-rays generated by winds from its black hole, which blow at 1 million mph (1.6 million km/h).

Meanwhile, M82 (center) is a starburst galaxy, featuring plumes of superheated gas produced as stars form at an extraordinary rate.

On the bottom row is NGC 346 (left), a young cluster home to thousands of newborn stars scattered among the glowing debris of an exploded star.

IC 1623 (center) shows two galaxies merging, which is triggering the formation of new stars that glow in X-ray light.

And Westerlund 1 (right), the largest and closest super star cluster to Earth, contains thousands of stars showering the cluster with powerful X-rays.

Senate confims new top Navy leader, vice chief for Space Force

Senators confirmed a flurry of senior military leadership posts, including the new top uniformed leader of the Navy and the new head of U.S. Special Forces Command, amid a rush of confirmation votes on Thursday evening.

In contrast to a series of contested nomination votes this week, the military confirmations were done by a simple voice vote without objection.

The moves fill several top Pentagon and military service slots ahead of the congressional summer break, allowing the leaders to step into their roles in the coming days.

Adm. Daryl Caudle, who has been the commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command since 2021, was approved as the next chief of naval operations, ending a nearly six-month vacancy in that role.

The Trump administration had dismissed previous CNO Adm. Lisa Franchetti without a stated reason on Feb. 21. Adm. James Kilby has been filling in as acting CNO since then.

Caudle testified at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on July 24 that America is “in the midst of a crucial era, defined by global competition, technological saturation and unpredictable threats that challenge our American dream.”

He addressed issues of environmental remediation at Red Hill, issues with a bloated budget for the dry dock replacement at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Navy accountability for late deliveries and mistakes made in defense programs, among other issues.

Caudle has also criticized manning shortages, a sentiment that aligns with the Trump administration’s intention to overhaul the maritime industrial base.

Also on Thursday, Lt. Gen. Shawn Bratton was confirmed as vice chief of the Space Force, replacing Gen. Michael Guetlein.

Last month, Defense Department officials announced Guetlein would step aside from the role in order to lead the new Office of Golden Dome for America, coordinating efforts for that defense project.

Vice Adm. Frank Bradley was named the next head of U.S. Special Forces Command. Lt. Gen. Dagvin Anderson was confirmed as the first Air Force general to lead U.S. Africa Command.

Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David Bligh, who currently serves as the staff judge advocate to the commandant of the Marine Corps, will take over as the judge advocate general of the Navy, the first Marine to hold that post in more than a century.

And Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte was confirmed as the next superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy. He’s the first Marine to hold that post, although his appointment comes amid controversy.

Vice Adm. Yvette Davids, the school’s first female superintendent, had led the academy since January 2024 but was fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth amid a host of reforms at the school.

The Senate could approve more senior defense posts in coming days. Lawmakers were expected to debate through the weekend on clearing a backlog of nominations pending in the chamber, and Trump has suggested cancelling the Senate’s planned August recess altogether to finish the work.

President Donald Trump has said his 2016 election rival Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, and others involved in the so-called “Russiagate” affair should pay a “big price” for orchestrating what he described as a deliberate attempt to sabotage his presidency.

In an interview Friday with Newsmax host Rob Finnerty, Trump commented on newly declassified material from the annex to Special Counsel John Durham’s 2023 report on the Russiagate hoax, which ties Clinton’s 2016 campaign and senior Obama-era officials to a coordinated effort to link Trump to Russia.

“I think they should pay a price. By the way, it’s a very big price,” Trump said. “For that to have gone on – it’s one of the great scandals, I think, in the history of our country. I know it is.”

Trump accused Obama of personally approving and encouraging Clinton’s plan to fabricate claims of Russia collusion, citing declassified documents released this week by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

“[Obama] knew about it. We have it cold. [Durham] has it in writing,” Trump said. “You could almost say that [Obama] was more of the mastermind. He heard what she was doing, and then he approved it – and not only approved it, he pushed it.”

Trump described the campaign as a “totally fake” conspiracy that inflicted immense damage on innocent people and on the country itself.

When asked whether Clinton should face consequences, Trump recalled choosing not to pursue criminal charges after his 2016 victory, despite pressure from supporters to “lock her up.”

“I had her right under the sights, and I told the people, ‘Look, you can’t do this to a ex-president’s wife.’ And I let Hillary off the hook,” he said. “And then I come in, and they did the same thing to me. The difference is, they meant it.”

Despite his calls for accountability, Trump emphasized that he would not interfere with the legal process. He said the decision on potential indictments would rest with Attorney General Pam Bondi, whom he praised as doing “a terrific job.”

The interview follows the declassification of documents by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, which allege that Clinton operatives, with assistance from George Soros-linked organizations, orchestrated the Trump-Russia narrative and expected the FBI to play an active role in advancing it.

A mass protest has erupted in the Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa against Kiev’s increasingly violent – and sometimes deadly – mobilization drive, after draft officers reportedly corralled dozens of men at a stadium.

The unrest began late Friday after eyewitnesses claimed that around 100 local men had been taken earlier to Lokomotiv Stadium by officers from Ukraine’s controversial Territorial Recruitment Centers (TRC), which operates as a press gang, mobbing victims and dragging them into vehicles off the streets.

As news spread, their relatives – mainly women – gathered at the site, demanding their release.

“They started catching them on the central bridge, brought them here, and locked them behind the gates. We came running because the guys we know asked for help.

When we approached, the police began dousing people with tear gas,” local resident Anna Tetervak told Ukrainskaya Pravda.

Videos circulating on social media show protesters shouting “Shame!” at police and attempting to break through the stadium gates.

Police reportedly deployed pepper spray and detained several demonstrators, according to local outlets and Telegram channels.

The situation remained tense well into the night, with new clashes reportedly breaking out after the start of the 11:00pm curfew.

Police urged residents to disperse, but many refused. Authorities allegedly blocked bridges leading to the stadium to prevent more people from joining the demonstration when the curfew ends at 5:00am.

Additional footage from the scene shows officers using police vehicles to block access roads leading to the stadium, while unmarked minibuses were driven inside the gates.

In a desperate attempt to stop the buses from taking the detained men away, relatives laid down on the asphalt in front of the vehicles, prompting police to forcibly clear the path.

Kiev’s general mobilization, requiring all able-bodied men aged 25 to 60 to serve, has not been enough to offset continued frontline losses.

Numerous social media posts show uniformed press gangs chasing men, dragging them into unmarked minibuses, and assaulting both recruits and bystanders – who increasingly defend the victims – in a practice now widely dubbed “busification.”

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has not commented on the Vinnitsa incident. However, opposition lawmakers and watchdog groups say thousands are being unlawfully detained.

One lawmaker, Georgy Mazurashu, recently described the mobilization effort as a “shameful hunt” and said soldiers are treated like “slaves.”

Laos plans to gift a pair of elephants to Russia as a symbol of peace and prosperity, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith said on Thursday during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Sisoulith said the gesture would be in recognition of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“On behalf of the government and people of Laos, we wish to present the Russian Federation with a pair of elephants, which are a symbol of peace, friendship and well-being,” he said.

The elephants, Sisoulith added, would be sent to St. Petersburg, the city where he studied at the Herzen State Pedagogical Institute.

Putin responded with a smile, saying, “Thank you, they’ll come in handy.”

During the talks, Putin highlighted growing trade ties between the two countries, noting that bilateral trade increased by 66% last year. In the first five months of 2025 alone, he said, trade volumes had risen by a further 20%.

Elephants have a long history in St. Petersburg, dating back to 1714, when the Persian Shah gifted the first one to the newly founded imperial capital.

It was transported by sea to Astrakhan and then led on foot to St.Petersburg, reportedly wearing specially made slippers to protect its feet.

Throughout the 18th century, additional elephants were gifted by Persian rulers, housed near the city center, and occasionally walked along what is now Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s main avenue.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, trained elephants performed in St. Petersburg Zoo, attracting large summer crowds.

Some were later transferred to Moscow due to financial difficulties, while others perished during periods of war and famine – including one that starved to death during the 1918 food crisis and another in 1941, during World War II, when a bombing raid by Nazi forces destroyed the elephant house during the Siege of Leningrad.

St. Petersburg Zoo has long awaited the return of elephants, with several generations of residents growing up without ever seeing one. The last elephant to live at the zoo, a male named Xun, died in 1982.

Several Russian cities, as well as occupied Crimea, were attacked by drones early on Saturday morning, August 2.

According to Russian Telegram channels, explosions were heard in the Lipetsk, Ryazan, Taganrog, Penza, Voronezh, and Samara regions, as well as in occupied Crimea.

The SHOT Telegram channel reported that at least four explosions occurred in different areas of Lipetsk. Before that, locals heard an air raid siren, followed by apparent air defense activity targeting drones.

Soon after, videos began circulating on other Telegram channels allegedly showing footage of the drone attack and the explosions. Some sources claimed a military airfield was the target.

Ryazan was also reportedly targeted. Photos and videos published online show at least one fire and visible smoke after the attack. Later, local Telegram channels claimed that a fire had broken out near the oil refinery in Ryazan.

The Baza Telegram channel also reported that explosions were heard early in the morning over the Diaghilev Airfield in Ryazan.

The pro-Ukrainian “Crimean Wind” Telegram channel reported that the Crimean Bridge was blocked, and a series of explosions was heard in Feodosia, Crimea.

Footage circulating on social media allegedly shows a fire near an oil depot in Feodosia. Reports indicated that the city had been under drone attack for several hours.

At approximately 00:34 Kyiv time, SHOT wrote that more than five explosions were heard in Taganrog, Rostov region. Flashes were seen in the sky, and air defenses were reportedly engaged.

There were also reports of explosions in the Voronezh region, where an unknown drone allegedly damaged a kindergarten building. It was also claimed that the windows of an office building were shattered.

Meanwhile, drones attacked the Penza and Samara regions, causing fires near an oil refinery and on the premises of two defense-related enterprises.

Russian Telegram channels reported that a drone threat alert was issued in the Samara region at 02:40. Temporary flight restrictions were introduced in the area.

Around 05:00, residents of Novokuibyshevsk in the Samara region reported loud noises in the sky. The Telegram channel Exilenova+ published a video allegedly showing drones striking the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery.

Between five and eight explosions were heard in Penza. Local residents reported that at least one drone was downed by air defenses over a forest, with smoke seen rising from the wreckage.

Eyewitnesses also filmed drones striking JSC “Production Association Electropribor” in Penza.

This facility is linked to the defense industry and involved in state military contracts. It reportedly manufactures:

Cryptographic communication protection devices, secure modems, and multiplexers;

Switches and equipment for digital networks in military command systems;

Hardware for aircraft, armored vehicles, ships, and spacecraft;

Systems for secure transmission of voice, graphics, and documents.

Drones also reportedly struck the Penza Radiozavod plant again.

In its morning update on Telegram, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that between 20:00 on August 1 and 04:40 on August 2 (Moscow time), Russian air defenses destroyed or intercepted 112 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones:

34 over the Rostov region

31 over Krasnodar region

12 over Voronezh region

11 over Ryazan region

5 over Samara region

4 over Penza region

2 over Belgorod region

1 each over occupied Crimea and Lipetsk region

11 over the Azov and Black Seas

As of now, the Ukrainian side has not issued an official comment on the attack.

Long-range drones operated by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) struck the Radiozavod plant in Penza – a key facility within Rostec that produces automated combat systems and mobile command centers for the Russian military on July 31, a Kyiv Post source in the SBU confirmed.

At least 11 explosions were recorded during the strike, followed by a large fire that reportedly destroyed a new production complex and critical component warehouses.

The plant, already under international sanctions, supports command systems for Russian air defense, artillery, and strategic forces.

The local governor acknowledged a fire at an industrial site but denied casualties or serious damage. Authorities also temporarily restricted mobile internet access, citing support for counter-drone systems.

For The First Time In 40 Years, The Federal Government Can Judge Applicants By Merit

A decades-old court order that blocked the federal government from using tests to measure job applicants’ skills was terminated by a D.C. judge on Friday, setting the stage for an overhaul of the federal workforce that could be one of President Donald Trump’s most lasting achievements.

In 1981, Angel Luevano sued the federal government over the Professional and Administrative Career Examination, a test that helped identify the best and brightest out of the tens of thousands who apply for government jobs each year. Luevano argued that the test kept too many blacks and Hispanics out of government, and, in the waning days of President Jimmy Carter’s administration, OPM agreed to pause the test for five years.Forty-four years later, the “Luevano Consent Decree” was somehow still intact. In January, the Trump administration filed a brief challenging the agreement — a feat which required reopening a decades-closed court case in which the original judge had died. The administration argued that it was doubtful the decree was ever appropriate, and that, with Supreme Court case law outlawing affirmative action, it was certainly not now.

A Miami jury decided that Elon Musk’s car company Tesla was partly responsible for a deadly crash in Florida involving its Autopilot driver assist technology and must pay the victims more than $200 million in damages.

The federal jury held that Tesla bore significant responsibility because its technology failed and that not all the blame can be put on a reckless driver, even one who admitted he was distracted by his cell phone before hitting a young couple.

Tesla has previously faced criticism that it is slow to cough up crucial data by relatives of other victims in Tesla crashes, accusations that the car company has denied. In this case, the plaintiffs showed Tesla had the evidence all along, despite its repeated denials, by hiring a forensic data expert who dug it up. Tesla said it made a mistake after being shown the evidence and honestly hadn’t thought it was there.

The Israel Defense Forces defeated Hamas’s Beit Hanoun battalion, the military declared on Saturday, after three of the terror group’s operatives surrendered to troops of the Givati Brigade in the northern Gaza town.

The operatives emerged from a tunnel and surrendered to the forces in the area, the IDF said, adding that they told the troops they had sought to flee the area after another gunman with them was killed during a previous exchange of fire with the military.

The Hamas gunmen also led the forces to a weapons depot near the tunnel from which they emerged, where the IDF said the troops found numerous weapons and equipment.

The military stated that troops also discovered food, water, and other supplies inside the tunnel, suggesting it could be used for long-term underground residence.

The IDF said the three operatives were taken for further interrogation, the weapons were seized, and combat engineers are mapping out the tunnel ahead of its demolition.

“The Beit Hanoun Battalion, which posed a threat to Nir Am and Sderot, has surrendered and been defeated by Givati Brigade troops,” the IDF said.

Defense Minister Israel Katz posted footage of the operatives surrendering on X. “Hamas terrorists are surrendering in Beit Hanoun.

They are emerging from the burrows into the destroyed city,” he wrote. “The IDF is destroying both the above and the underground [infrastructure] to defend the city of Sderot.”

Last week, during a tour of Beit Hanoun, the commander of the Givati Brigade told reporters that there were just four or five remaining gunmen in the area.

The IDF has operated in Beit Hanoun five times since the beginning of the war, slowly degrading Hamas’s battalion there, which, before October 7, 2023, consisted of over 1,000 operatives.

The majority of the Hamas gunmen in the Beit Hanoun Battalion were either killed during the fighting or fled, like the battalion commander, Hussein Fayyad.

The IDF’s declaration on Beit Hanoun followed a Channel 12 news report, which stated that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir had pleaded with cabinet ministers this week to present a strategy for how they wanted the army to proceed amid the standstill in hostage talks.

Zamir reportedly emphasized that the government lacks a clear game plan, as Jerusalem’s diplomatic standing has plummeted due to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

On Friday, Zamir told troops inside Gaza he estimates “that in the coming days we will know whether we will be able to reach a partial deal to release our hostages,” otherwise “the fighting will continue unabated.”

According to the nationalist politician, the European Union has “completely degenerated,” does not represent nation states or sovereign peoples, and has now become a machine run by overpaid bureaucrats that only causes harm.

Weidel says Germany’s economic decline is rooted in domestic decisions. High energy prices, the green transition, and the phase-out of nuclear power have made German industry uncompetitive, especially the automotive industry, which she says is being deliberately destroyed by Brussels regulations.

“All the bad rules were made in Brussels,” she said, emphasizing that the ban on internal combustion engines and environmental sanctions benefit China and American companies, not European workers. According to Weidel, Germany and Europe need a free market where everyone can produce and buy what they want.

Weidel also said the German government was playing politics against the population, lying to people, and doing the opposite of what it promised.

On Angela Merkel, the AfD leader said that she was “the first Green Chancellor, not the conservative leader of the CDU.” She also called current Chancellor Friedrich Merz a representative of the “losing side.”

Weidel contrasted Germany with Hungary, praising Viktor Orbán for his “common sense” and as a role model for national sovereignists. “I can only congratulate Viktor Orbán, Hungary is doing much better,” she said.

“Hungary is the only one that clearly stands out and says: this cannot be done with us,” she said. According to Weidel, in Germany, on the other hand, there is an unstable government that is deliberately worsening the financial situation of the population in order to make people vulnerable.

Weidel further stated that she believes Hungarians live relatively better than Germans, compared to the country’s economic performance.

According to Weidel, “Everyone should leave the EU.”

Revolutions sometimes come in small steps. For those of us born before 1995, turning 16 had a small coming of age moment: a blue and red card would arrive in the post. Squished in bulging wallets, between various receipts, loyalty, debit and credit cards, our National Insurance card would later invariably be lost, or buried in a drawer. A minor panic would then ensue each time a new employer asked for your number.

But today, as wallets have shrunk and new payment forms such as Apple Pay arisen, a major transformation can take place, giving people greater control of the identity and information and nations a greater control of their borders. Through our own digital ID – a self-sovereign identity – wide reforms can also be put in place to reboot government and citizenship for the 21st Century.

The introduction of ID cards in the UK has long been a politically fraught issue. But such cards are common across Europe and, in digitally pioneering countries like Estonia, encrypted IDs allow people to authenticate themselves online, so that they can vote, submit tax claims, or manage medical prescriptions without leaving the house. Citizenship is intertwined with the nation state and we need to be smarter in how we manage this.

Two challenges need to be overcome.

The first is finding an acceptable balance between the state’s desire to have an authoritative view of what is happening, and the right of individuals to go about their lives without undue monitoring. Any approach that involves building a national identity database runs two big risks: that it is used by the state either now or in the future to profile the activities and behaviour of individual citizens, and that it is compromised on an industrial scale by hackers with malicious or criminal intent.[1]Link to footnote

The second is more prosaic. Despite advances in production methods, it remains possible to create counterfeit physical identity documents that will pass a cursory examination. And because the data printed on the documents is in plain sight, people often share far more information than warranted. In the UK these challenges apply to the documents we use for identification, such as passports, birth certificates and driving licences. All of these are routinely requested, copied or transcribed in ways that take our data well outside of our control.

Fortunately, new technologies can help address these. By putting individuals in control of their personal data and securing it with digital signatures, individuals can credibly assert their identity or status without mediation by the state. And because digital data is more flexible than physical documents, it would be possible to share only the information required in any given circumstance.

Such an approach, broadly characterised as self-sovereign identity, could work as follows:

Users would install a digital wallet to their smartphone, and use this to generate a unique pair of digital keys (the basis of modern cryptography). Unlike traditional username / password combinations where credentials are stored on a central server, the user’s private key will never be known to anyone else.

Users would then provide their public key to identity authorities, and receive digitally signed attestations that would be stored in their digital wallet. This would be the digital equivalent of the safe place where you currently store your passport and other important papers; the difference is that digital versions cannot be altered or counterfeited.

Users would share these digitally signed attestations with third parties as required (e.g. to prove eligibility to work), and use their private key to sign any related documents. The digital signatures involved would give the counterparty confidence in what is being asserted without requiring a central system to intermediate the interaction.

As well as addressing the centralisation and oversharing challenges of traditional identity systems, this approach also opens up the potential for other uses of technology to streamline processes and reduce bureaucracy. In cases where the individual is physically present, it would be possible to for bank managers, landlords or employers for example to check facial biometrics against a digitally signed photograph shared from the user’s digital wallet, significantly reducing the risk of identity theft. And for online transactions, a personally controlled digital identity could be the foundation for reorienting public services around the citizen. Estonia has led the way on this front. For example, digital health records belong to citizens, are walled off from other data unless the citizen chooses otherwise, while there is an indelible record of anyone else that has accessed them.

Smartphones also make it possible to leapfrog some of the costs associated with cards and card readers in traditional electronic ID systems. However, digital inclusion remains a relevant factor, and there may be a need to issue devices to individuals who are unable to provide their own. It would also be relatively easy for new residents to get set up, although a requirement would remain for existing identity authorities to issue digitally signed attestations, and the process for this would need to be properly staffed and resourced.[2]Link to footnote

In the context of migration to the UK, a system like this could provide the infrastructure that ensures people are only employed when they have a legal right to work, and have access only to the public services that they are entitled to. Individuals would simply need to acquire the relevant digitally signed attestations (and there is no reason why this could not be done before entering the country). For existing citizens, the same attestations could be issued when setting up basic identity attributes for the first time.

This would not be a silver bullet for controlling illegal immigration. It would not track individual activity and there will be some element of non-compliance. But by making it far harder to operate under false pretences, it would radically shift the incentives for anyone contemplating gaming the system. It could also restore the public’s confidence that the system and our national borders are not being abused, address many of the concerns that drove Brexit.

But it also part of the major revolution that should be taking place in Britain today, to ensure that we are a modern, imaginative and innovation nations, ready to give people control in the right ways.

As they spin, comet nuclei often show periodic variations of their brightness over timescales of order hours. Astronomers expect that to apply also to the new interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, since it was classified by the Minor Planet Center as a comet.

The first interstellar object, 1I/`Oumuamua was spinning with a period of about 8 hours, but its spin did not evolve as expected from a comet with its measured non-gravitational acceleration.

Even more paradoxically, deep observations by the Spitzer space telescope did not find carbon-based molecules or dust in a cometary tail around 1I/`Oumuamua.

As in Hans-Christian Andersen’s folktale, this “emperor” had no visible clothes but the astronomers pretending to be the adults in the room insist in a recent paper that 1I/’Oumuamua is a dark comet with invisible clothes.

As of now, there is no spectroscopic evidence for atomic or molecular gas around 3I/ATLAS either (see the papers here, here and here). In addition, data from the new Rubin Observatory on 3I/ATLAS shows no variability on hourly timescales.

Why isn’t the flux from 3I/ATLAS changing periodically? Either 3I/ATLAS is not rotating or the rotation of its nucleus is hidden from view deep inside a thick cloud of dust.

Another interesting fact gleaned from images of 3I/ATLAS is that it has a leading glowing halo rather than a trailing tail. Why is there a glow ahead of 3I/ATLAS? One possible explanation is that the object does not spin and so its dayside is hot and its nightside is cold.

As a result, any ice that accumulated on its surface during its freezing interstellar travel evaporated only at the front of the object facing the Sun. This would mean that the object’s surface is not hidden behind a veil of dust and so its diameter must be 10–20 kilometers to explain its brightness.

This brings back the argument from my published paper that 3I/ATLAS cannot be a 10–20 kilometer rock because the available rocky material in interstellar space can only deliver a 10–20 kilometer rock to the survey volume of the ATLAS survey telescope once per 10,000 years rather than once per 10 years as required.

If 3I/ATLAS is not a 10–20 kilometers rock, then what is the origin of this object?

One way to avoid the mass budget problem is by delivering 3I/ATLAS to the inner solar system through a fine-tuned trajectory. As it turns out, the trajectory of 3I/ATLAS has indeed rare features.

It lines up with the orbital plane of the inner planets (with a likelihood of 0.2%) and comes unusually close to Jupiter, Mars and Venus (with a likelihood of 0.005%). Is 3I/ATLAS alien technology?

This was the title of my second paper on 3I/ATLAS, in collaboration with Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl from the Initiative for Interstellar Studies.

In recent days, I was independently asked by dozens of podcasters and reporters for my opinion on the probability that 3I/ATLAS is an object under intelligent control. I replied that it is difficult to assign a probability to the technological origin.

It is natural to expect 3I/ATLAS to be a comet with a compact nucleus surrounded by a large dust cloud. Yet, 3I/ATLAS follows an exceptionally rare trajectory. And so, the final verdict depends on the significance assigned to the trajectory’s peculiarities.

We will have a better assessment of this probability within a month or two, once 3I/ATLAS gets brighter and easier to observe as it approaches the Sun.

Former special counsel Jack Smith, who headed two criminal investigations into President Donald Trump, faces a probe by the Office of Special Counsel for alleged election interference, the agency confirmed to Forbes, after a top Republican accused Smith of attempting to “damage” Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The OSC, an independent agency of the federal government, is investigating Smith for alleged violations of the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activities, the agency told Forbes (the New York Post was first to report on the probe).

Earlier this week, Senate Intelligence Committee chair Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., requested an investigation into Smith by the OSC for “unprecedented interference” in the recent presidential election, claiming Smith’s investigations into Trump were “nothing more than a tool for the Biden and Harris campaigns.”

Cotton alleges Smith fast-tracked a trial and jury selection in Trump’s election interference case, which was dropped by Smith weeks after the 2024 election, and accused Smith of failing to “articulate a legitimate reason” why the court should grant his requests to fast-track.

Cotton also claimed Smith violated the DOJ’s “60-day rule,” which prevents prosecutors from taking steps in a case that could influence an upcoming election, alleging Smith aimed to “help [Kamala Harris] and hurt Trump,” adding, “These actions were not standard, necessary, or justified.”

Smith has not publicly commented on Cotton’s allegations.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris was criticized on a Friday CNN panel for delivering vague answers during her interview with host Stephen Colbert the night before.

During the "Late Show" interview, Harris spoke about her choice not to run for the governorship of California,making broad generalizations about how, "Just for now, I don‘t want to go back in the system. I think it‘s broken."

On CNN, NOTUS White House Correspondent Jasmine Wright, who covered the Harris campaign,=objected to Harris using "amorphous phrasing" like "the system," and doubted whether Americans could grasp what she was talking about.

"I think what people want are solutions, and she has not said a single one," Wright said. "And consistently, people want her to be descriptive about what she says is wrong. And I don‘t think that that interview, she was able to do that. And it‘s a shame because she‘s had six months to figure it out."

"She hasn‘t said anything really for six months," panel host Manu Raju agreed.

CNN senior reporter Aaron Blake commented on how there are multiple other prominent Democrats,like former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, talking about how America’s institutions are under attack, or how American democracy is in particularly dark times, but there is one key flaw.

"But we don‘t see, like, a very consistent message from Democrats on this," Blake said. "Maybe that‘s because they don‘t have somebody with kind of the heft and the constant presence in our daily lives to drive that message.But it seems like something where they pop up every once in a while and say, ‘Hey, this situation is pretty bad.’ And then they kind of fade awayand it just doesn‘t seem like Democrats have been able to drive that message very well."

"You know, she was so guarded last night. I mean, I was a bit surprised because she had been gone. She‘s now not running for office, at least at the moment.And she was not, perhaps, as forthcoming about some of the issues with the campaign than maybe what I personally expected," Raju said, before playing a clip of Mark Cuban saying Harris is far more charismatic behind closed doors.

AP White House reporter Michelle Price argued that Thursday night’s interview stood out because "she was especially robotic, but that is a longstanding problem for her. She even looked physically uncomfortable, like her shoulders seemed up into her neck most of that interview, which was just striking because, you know, she has nothing to lose right now. She could be energetic or much more candid than she was."

Price added further that the interview "seemed more like a lament for where things went last year, where the party is now.There was no message of leadership or moving forward, or even clarity on what, again, like Jasmine said, what is the system? Is she talking about the California gubernatorial system, the election system?"

Wright argued that Harris is falling uniquely short of her responsibility to candidly explain what went wrong with the election.

"I think that after how damaging 2024 was, not just for her personally, but for the Democratic Party, I think that what is required of her is to really be honest about what went wrong in her campaign, what went wrong with the party, and what she wants to do," she said. "And yes, maybe that happens on that listening tour that she‘s going to go on in December. But I think people want those answers from her now. And she had the time to create them."
