Masked NIH Employees Storm Out Of Meeting After Director Bhattacharya Questions Agency's Role In COVID-19 Origins

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sparked a mass walkout of NIH employees after suggesting that COVID-19 may have originated from a Wuhan lab and that NIH helped fund it.

During a staff town hall meeting on Monday, Bhattacharya told NIH employees, “It’s possible that the pandemic was caused by research conducted by human beings, and it’s also possible that the NIH partly sponsored that research.”

That comment prompted dozens of NIH employees to walk out of the meeting.

As the NIH employees, some wearing masks, stormed out of the meeting, Bhattacharya called after them, “Nice to have free speech. You’re welcome, you guys.”

Bhattacharya told the remaining employees, “If it’s true that we sponsored research that caused the pandemic — and if you look at polls of the American people, that’s what most people believe, and I’ve looked at the scientific evidence and I believe it — [then] what we have to do is make sure that we don’t engage in research that is any risk…to human populations.”

The U.S. has faced growing scrutiny for the NIH’s participation in controversial virus manipulation experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology where the FBI and CIA both believe the COVID-19 virus originated.

As the new director of NIH, Bhattacharya has also faced a $2.7 billion cut in funding from the federal government as well as the layoffs of more than 1,200 staff members.

Bhattacharya has argued that the cuts are necessary since, “There’s been a line of research supported by the NIH that I don’t actually fundamentally believe is scientific and that is ideological in nature.”

The new NIH director became well known during the pandemic for his support of the Great Barrington Declaration, which called for ending lockdowns for all but the most vulnerable.

A brigade idealized by French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, trained and equipped in France, has become an endless source of scandal.

Ukrainian and French media report on the mass desertion in the 155th Ukrainian mechanized brigade ‘Anne de Kyiv’, where almost a quarter has deserted.

“This unit was intended to be a successful combat force of the Ukrainian army. But since its deployment to the front, it has been multiplying controversies over equipment shortages, including drones, and mass abandonment of posts among its soldiers.

The Ukrainian army announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, that it was launching an inspection of the “Anne of Kiev” brigade, trained and equipped by France to support Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, but which has been at the heart of scandals concerning embezzlement and desertions for months.”

The brigade was hailed by Macron and Zelensky as ‘a symbol of military cooperation between Kyiv and Paris’.

Ukrainian magazine Ukrainska Pravda revealed on Monday (19) that Colonel Tarass Maksimov was involved in a case of false payments and extortion of money from his troops.

“The brigade is also facing some 1,200 abandonments of posts, while its numbers include less than 5,000 soldiers, about half of whom were trained in France. ‘After the publication of the article in Ukrainska Pravda, I ordered an additional official inspection of the facts revealed by the journalists’, the commander of the ground forces Mykhailo Drapaty was quoted as saying by the newspaper.”

The ‘Anne of Kiev’ Brigade has been criticized since its deployment to the front, with the Ukrainian General Staff using its soldiers to ‘plug holes’ in other units.

“About 2,300 of the brigade’s soldiers were trained on French soil and equipped with French VAB transport vehicles, AMX-10 tanks and Caesar self-propelled guns, as well as ammunition and anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles. Emmanuel Macron had visited the soldiers of the Ukrainian 155th Brigade in October 2024 during their training in France.”

The Trump administration came to the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning, once again asking the justices to take action on their emergency docket.U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer urged the court to temporarily pause an order by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., that would require the Department of Government Efficiency to provide information in a lawsuit filed under the Freedom of Information Act. Sauer told the justices that requiringDOGE as a “presidential advisory body” to respond to the plaintiffs’ requests, a process known as discovery, “clearly violates the separation of powers” and “will significantly distract” from DOGE’s “mission of identifying and eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse in the federal government.”

Chief Justice John Roberts instructed CREW to file a response to the government’s request by noon on Friday, May 23.

President Donald Trump created DOGE on Jan. 20 to “further the President’s agenda by ‘modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.’”DOGE is not a cabinet-level departmentbut has had sweeping involvement in the president’s efforts to shrink the federal government across agencies since he took office.

The Trump administration’s request on Wednesday stems from a Jan. 24 request made under FOIA by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government watchdog group.CREW sought, among other things, communications between the DOGE administrator, Amy Gleason, and DOGE staff, as well as financial disclosures submitted by DOGE personnel.

On Feb. 20, CREW filed a lawsuit under FOIA in federal court in Washington, D.C. It sought documents that, according to CREW, it wanted before Congress passed a bill to fund the federal government.

As the case comes to the court on Wednesday, it centers on CREW’s request for expedited discovery to determine whether DOGE is an “agency” that must comply with FOIA. CREW asked to depose Gleason as well as for a list of government contracts and grants that DOGE recommended be canceled, a list of employees and positions that DOGE recommended be terminated, and a list of current and former DOGE employees.

U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper largely granted CREW’s request, including the request to depose Gleason, and instructed DOGE to respond quickly.

In an order on May 14, the U.S.Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit declined to pause Cooper’s order, calling the discovery order “narrow” and “modest.”

Sauer came to the Supreme Court one week later, asking the justices to intervene. He told them that Cooper had “granted expedited, intrusive discovery into a presidential advisory body to address whether that advisory body is exempt from FOIA.” Such an order, he emphasized, gives CREW “a significant part of the information it would obtain were it to prevail on the merits of its FOIA arguments,” andit “offends the separation of powers by compromising the ‘necessity’ for confidentiality that allows presidential advisors to provide ‘candid, objective’ advice and communication.”

The justices are already considering another emergency appeal involving DOGE: On May 2, the Trump administration asked the justices topause an order by a federal judge in Baltimore that temporarily restricts DOGE team members from accessing the records of the Social Security Administration, access which challengers argue could expose the personal data of millions of Americans. The court has not yet acted on that appeal.

How white nationalists infiltrated the wellness industry

The Mighty White Soap Company appears to be run out of a rural home in Michigan, in the US Midwest.

The marketing images they've posted online have an earthy, back-to-the-land appearance. Owls, antique fonts, and autumn leaves complete the quaint theme.

But to the right audience, the product names of Mighty White mean much more than they first appear. Take, for instance, one recent product called Day of the Rope Soap.

"There is a political manifesto written by an American neo-Nazi called The Turner Diaries that advocates what's called accelerationism: the idea that you can create enough low-level chaos as individual actors to destabilise a national government to the point that it collapses and white nationalists can fill the political void," Mark Hay, a freelance journalist covering extremism and niche subcultures tells ABC Radio National's Late Night Live.

"And in that novel, The Day of the Rope is the day that they execute all of the 'race traitors'… the people within the white community who worked against the supposed white interests."

Hay says Mighty White soaps are often named with references to far-right memes or tropes, or with openly racial names like its Caucasian Abrasion body scrub.

Mighty White is one of the companies that Hay has documented as part of a small but growing wellness subculture that uses ideas of purity, health and fitness to spread white nationalism. It's one of the oldest examples that he found, as it has been selling its soaps since 2015.

The connection between soap and white supremacy is cropping up all over the place, as Hay revealed in a major investigation for Al Jazeera published in February. He identified more than 20 companies in the US and United Kingdom that were active while reporting on the story from November 2022 to January this year.

He discovered hateful ideologies that have infiltrated the wellness movement and uncovered what they say about a new phase in white nationalism.

Soap and supremacy

Hay came across the story by chance while trying to learn more about white supremacist communities, researching in neo-Nazi forums and chat rooms. He had grown accustomed to mostly seeing "disaster prepper" or racist literature, but in recent years, a new type of post caught his attention.

"A few years ago I started seeing ads for soap, and it struck me as odd," he says.

"And I decided to look into it. And after a little bit of time, I realised … this is perfectly logical. It's new, but it's an extension of trends that have existed within white nationalism for decades."

Report: Tallahassee prosecutor now looking into $10M tied to Casey DeSantis charity

Tallahassee-area State Attorney Jack Campbell reportedly has opened aninvestigation into the $10 million from a Medicaid settlement given to a charity connected to First Lady Casey DeSantisthat made its way into the coffers of a political committee. And Gov. Ron DeSantis isn’t happy about it.

“Based on what?” DeSantis said May 20 when a reporter asked about the probe, which was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald Tallahassee Bureau. “Everything that’s been thrown at (Hope Florida) is pure politics,” DeSantis said. “I believe in this program deeply and stand by it 100%.”

Campbell, a Democrat who first took office in 2017, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Last month he told the USA TODAY NETWORK - FLORIDA he wasn’t investigating the Hope Florida payment. "As for (an) investigation, the only source of information I have received is from members of the press," Campbell said in an email. "The Florida Legislature has many good lawyers including some former prosecutors. I am sure they would refer any evidence of crimes to me if they found them.”

In a recent response to a request by the Herald/Times for Hope Florida Foundation-related records, however, the records custodian for Campbellsaid the information couldn’t be released because it was “part of an open, on-going investigation.”

As state attorney for the 2nd Judicial Circuit, he is the capital region's top elected law enforcement official, responsible for prosecuting crime in six counties: Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Liberty, Wakulla and Leon, which includes Tallahassee.

News of the investigation came as DeSantis had finished lauding the Hope Florida program at an event in Tampa, highlighting its work to connect low-income Floridians with social services provided by nonprofits, including churches. As the brainchild of Casey DeSantis,Hope Florida began in 2021, using state employees in several agencies as “Hope navigators” to get those in need in touch with non-governmental entities to provide support.

But an inquiry led by House Republicansdiscovered a $10 million payment to the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity set up in2023to raise money for the program,was passed through other nonprofits before ending up in a political committee. The payment was part of a settlement between Centene, a provider under the state’s Medicaid Managed Care program, and the state.

Under the settlement, which was brought by overpayments made to Centene, the state received $57 million and the Hope Florida Foundation received a $10 million “donation.” (How does a state overpay for $67 million dollars)

State Attorney Jack Campbell took questions from reporters on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, about the surprise continuance that came two days earlier in the trial of Donna Adelson, who's accused of helping orchestrate the 2014 murder of law professor Dan Markel.

Days later, the Hope Florida Foundation gave two $5 million grants to two nonprofits.Those nonprofits then gave $8.5 million to Keep Florida Clean, a political committee.

That committee was run by James Uthmeier, who in October 2024 – when the payment was made – was DeSantis’ chief of staff and is now Florida's attorney general. The committee used the money to oppose Amendment 3 on the November ballot, which would have legalized recreational marijuana.

"We aren't aware of and haven't received any inquiries from the state attorney," Jeremy Redfern, a spokesman for Uthmeier, stated in a post on X. "Looks like more lawfare driven by the fake news media and those politically motivated to hurt Gov. Ron DeSantis."

House Health Care Budget Subcommittee Chair Alex Andrade, R-Pensacola, led the initial probe into the payment.He has previously said he thinks a crime was committed but it wasn’t his responsibility to conduct a criminal investigation or charge anyone.

Casey DeSantis is still considering running for governor in 2026 to succeed her term-limited husband, but a criminal probe into her signature initiative – even though Andrade and no one investigating the payment has suggested she was involved with any criminal activity –could complicate her entry into the race.

"This is not about politics. This is about doing good on behalf of the people who deserve a chance for someone to fight for them," Casey DeSantis said of Hope Florida during the event. Amid published reports that she may be reconsidering a run, the first lady also told the crowd she's in no hurry to make a decision:

“I've got to save the Free State, but we literally just went through an election cycle, right? We’re 100 days into the presidency. And you talk to a lot of people around the state, and they are so tired of politics.”

As for Andrade, he told the USA TODAY Network – Florida, "I’m not in a position to comment on what law enforcement is or isn’t doing.I’m convinced that crimes occurredand I believe those engaged in public corruption should face justice. Whether they ever face justice is up to law enforcement."

He confirmed that he turned over documentshis committee gathered to the State Attorney's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice.

"I spoke with the DOJ, and I wouldn't expect them to talk to me about it ever again (because) I told them everything I knew," he said. "Turned over every document to them, and that was it."

"From my perspective, I'm confident that a crime occurred, public corruption occurred," he added, "and that James Uthmeier committed money laundering and wire fraud. I'm confident enough to say that publicly ...."

Uthmeier has said previously that he wasn't involved in settlement negotiations related to the Hope Florida contribution "and looking at it, everything looks legal." Andrade says the matter is out of his hands.

"It's always premature to overreact to an investigation because one result of an investigation is that no criminal charges are brought. So when I stopped having hearings, I sent everything I had over to the State Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice, and after that, as far as collecting new evidence, it's pretty much up to them."

Sounds like a lot of the lawmakers and law enforcement are afraid of the DeSantis’s. This doesn’t sound like the only thing they did while he was Governor.

"How do we continue moving forward when we are no longer in the White House?"

Dubbed a White House-in-waiting during his exile, the America First Policy Institute now seems nearly like another White House campus – almost half of President Trump’s Cabinet is expected to address the AFPI policy summit this week in Washington, D.C.

The roster of speakers reflects not just the rising influence of the new think tank but also the stunning reversal in Republican political fortunes. AFPI was born from failure. After the 2020 election, founder and then-CEO Brooke Rollins was looking to salvage the “Trump 2.0” policy portfolio, the detailed plans for a second presidential term that never came, or rather, one that was delayed.

Her motivating question at the time: “How do we continue moving forward when we are no longer in the White House?” The answer will be on full display when assorted MAGA dignitaries kick off the summit Tuesday at the Kennedy Center by toasting “the America First Moment.” After decamping to a nearby Beltway hotel for the next two days, they will celebrate the crowning achievement of the young institute.

Over 86% of the 196 federal policies that AFPI drafted and recommended in 2022, while Republicans were still in the wilderness, have been advanced or enacted during the first 100 Days of the Trump administration, RealClearPolitics is first to report.

“President Trump has kept his promises. His administration’s speed and clarity in acting on these priorities is not just impressive, it’s historic,” said Greg Sindelar, who took over as interim CEO earlier this year. “The America First Agenda was always rooted in the needs of real people, not the whims of Washington. What we’re seeing now is the natural result of a movement that's aligned with the public, led by conviction, and governed with urgency.”

Some of the policies now implemented were already standard GOP boilerplate, like border security and economic deregulation, when AFPI made their recommendations. Others directly mirror institute white papers, like the plan to reclassify the employment status of thousands of civil servants, lay off large portions of the federal workforce, and remake the bureaucracy in Trump’s own image.

Known as “Schedule F,” the expansion of executive authority was an Institute brainchild. Its mastermind, a policy wonk named James Sherk, went with Trump into the White House. So did many of the AFPI staff, and while some in the beltway will quibble over who originated what policy idea, what is undeniable is that the Trump think tank maxed out the maxim that personnel is policy.

The AFPI people are everywhere in the White House and in key positions across the administration. By their count – and reported here for the first time – no less than 73 institute alumni now work for the president. The most prominent can be found seated next to Trump in the Cabinet Room.

Rubio accuses Biden of being ‘irresponsible’ on Russia

The US secretary of state has said the “two biggest nuclear powers” must never stop talking, however different their positions

The administration of the previous US president, Joe Biden, acted irresponsibly by effectively shutting off communication with Russia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.

Testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, the diplomat said that Russia possesses the “largest strategic weapon stockpile in the world and one of the largest [in] tactical nuclear weapons.”

With this in mind, “there has to be some level of communication between the United States and Moscow,” irrespective of Ukraine, he insisted.

According to Rubio, “it’s frankly irresponsible to not have the two biggest nuclear powers on the planet communicating, which was the case for three years” under the Biden administration. He added that themere fact that Washington and Moscow talk to each other does not automatically mean that the two are “going to be allies or friendly.”

However, communication between major players in the international arena is keyin order to “prevent miscalculation and war,” the US secretary of state concluded.

Despite being repeatedly pressed by Democratic representativeBill Keating to call Russian President Vladimir Putin a war criminal, Rubiorefused to do so, explaining that “we can’t end the war [in Ukraine] without talking to Mr Putin.” (If they only could admit Ukraine did more war crimes to their own people since 2014.)

In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity in early March, the top diplomat acknowledged that the Ukraine conflict is a “proxy war between nuclear powers – the United States, helping Ukraine – and Russia.” The Kremlin has long described the conflict in similar terms.

In another interview the previous month, Rubio pointed out that“even in the worst days of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union maintained communication.”

“Whether we like it or not, Russia is a power, a global power,” he stated, emphasizing that dialogue is absolutely necessary to prevent “dangerous confrontations.”

Trump responds to Zelensky’s call for tougher Russia sanctions

The US president has said any decision on additional restrictions will be made solely by him

US President Donald Trump has pushed back on calls by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky for tougher sanctions on Russia,saying the decision is his alone.

Zelensky has continued to press for additional restrictions, accusing the Kremlin of failing to follow through on peace overtures. Western nations have imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 – measures Moscow has repeatedly condemned as illegal and ineffective.

Asked by reporters on Wednesday whether he was considering new measures,Trump said it would be “my determination” and “nobody else’s.”

He recalled a two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, followed by a conversation with EU leaders. “We’ll see how Russia behaves. We’ll see what’s going to happen,” Trump said, adding,“We have a pretty critical time right now.”

Both Putin and Trump described Monday’s call as productive. Trump said he believed Putin was interested in ending the conflict andwarned that additional economic pressure could hinder Washington’s mediation efforts.

Putin has said Moscow and Kiev should negotiate a formal memorandum outlining a detailed path to a broader peace agreement, and that a ceasefire could be part of the proposed road map.

Trump said he expects progress within two weeks but acknowledged that reaching a deal would be difficult.

On Tuesday, the EU and UK introduced new rounds of sanctions targeting Russia. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, a vocal critic of Moscow, said further measures were “in the works.”

In a series of posts on X on Tuesday and Wednesday, Zelensky welcomed the move by Kiev’s European supporters, calling it “a step in the right direction.” He also emphasized the need to work closely with the US so that “at some point,” it will impose appropriate sanctions as well.

Last week, delegations from Russia and Ukraine met in Istanbul for their first direct talks since Kiev unilaterally withdrew from the peace process in 2022. Russia’s top negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, later said that both sides had agreed to conduct a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 POWs each and to continue contacts once both had prepared detailed ceasefire proposals.

Kiev previously demanded an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Russia before entering direct negotiations – an idea that Moscow said amounts to asking for time for the Ukrainian military to regroup.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Moscow and Kiev would each draft their own version of the proposed memorandum,after which “difficult” negotiations would follow to agree on a single text.

(The EU and Zelensky has been pushing this for months, Zelensky was their ploy to destroy Russia, it’s not going to work. Once the war is settled Zelenskyy and the EU will be left out in the cold. They will have to take care and fund Europe instead a war they could never win. And they know it. The U.S. will never be their tool.)

Protesters gathered outside Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s house to demand justice for Laquan McDonald and an end to the ethnic cleansing of Chicago vis-à-vis gentrification on Oct. 20, the anniversary of McDonald’s murder by Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke.

The event, organized by the People’s Congress of Resistance, ANSWER Chicago and Black Lives Matter Women of Faith, gathered in front of Mayor Emanuel’s Ravenswood home in response to the $2.25 billion bid for an Amazon headquarters in the city of Chicago.

Despite what the city’s political and economic elites may say, an Amazon headquarters would not benefit the vast majority of Chicagoans. In fact, it would disproportionately impact Chicago’s Black community just as it has in Seattle, where recently an ordinance was passed to prevent the city’s racist landlords from prioritizing tech workers over working class families.

The protest started off with militant chants of, “16 Shots and a Cover Up!” and “No Justice, No Peace, No Racist Police!” Before the speakers started, protesters took a knee in front of the mayor’s house to express solidarity with the movement against racist police terror.

John Beacham, Coordinator of ANSWER Chicago, opened up the evening by explaining what exactly an Amazon headquarters would mean for Chicago’s Black community.

“We just had to be at Rahm’s house on the anniversary of Laquan’s lynching. We are also here because the city is gearing up to possibly give billions of dollars to a corporation that’s going to escalate a gentrification that will disproportionately impact the Black community of Chicago,” Beacham said.

Elias Rodriguez from the Party for Socialism and Liberation argued that the murder of Laquan McDonald and the Chicago bid for an Amazon headquarters are not two separate issues, but rather they are both connected.

The DEA released their National Drug Threat Assessment this week highlighting Mexican cartels and transnational gangs recently designated as FTOs.

A key takeaway is regarding the shift in alliances and cartel factions. Most notably the cooperation between the Los Mayos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and CDN.

The DEA reports that Los Mayos supplies CDN with fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine which CDN then smuggles northbound into the United States. The CDN facilitates the sale and distribution of these drugs using routes under control of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Historically, as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, Los Zetas did not have their hands directly in drug manufacturing or smuggling directly from South American sources but rather acting as protection for CDG operations.

Extortion, kidnapping, human smuggling and other organized crime staples were used by the Zetas in order to fund their expansion when breaking away from the Gulf Cartel. As a part of that expansion, Los Zetas began operating in other countries including Colombia to source cocaine and facilitate human smuggling. It has been reported that CDN took over Colombian connections from Los Zetas.

Last year, former CDN leader Juan "El Huevo" Treviño-Chavez pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to import and distribute marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine in Texas.

Longtime Rivals

When Osiel Cardenas, Gulf Cartel leader was arrested in 2003, the Sinaloa Cartel saw it as an opportunity to take territory from them with plazas and routes into eastern Texas at stake. Their battles helped militarize the cartels and created an arms war in Mexico.

This also gave rise to Los Zetas as their own cartel and other cartels around the country that formed in response to the expansion of Los Zetas, many initially allied with Sinaloa.

In 2021, Mayo Zambada gunmen showed support for "El Rodo" for an independent cartel in Nuevo Leon, seperate from CDN. The cartel group, led by Joel Rodolfo Ramones Barda had said to be working with Mayo for years. The independent group has threatened the Gulf Cartel factions and CDN alike.

In October 2023, Los Chapitos released a video threatening Cartel del Noreste while interrogating a captured rival in Doctor Arroyo, Nuevo León. Last year, an armed group of CDN, "Chukys" threatened to rid the Nuevo Leon area of "rats" from the Sinaloa Cartel, CJNG, Gulf Cartel, and other groups.

Z-40, the founder of CDN and former Los Zetas leader, in a WhatsApp message supposedly sent from prison threatened the Sinaloa Cartel as well in the area.

The DEA has finally acknowledged that the Gulf Cartel is no longer a single entity, even though it is listed among those designated as terrorist groups. "As of 2025, CDG is no longer a unified cartel, having split into multiple factions. The two most powerful factions are Los Metros and Los Escorpiones."

It is noted that the Los Metros faction is aligned with CJNG for protection from Los Mayos, CDN, and other CDG factions. The Los Metros faction has effectively become an enforcement arm of CJNG in northeastern Mexico and assists in protecting and transporting CJNG-owned shipments across the border.

In addition, Los Metros traffics cocaine acquired from Colombia and methamphetamine sourced from LNFM across the US Mexico border

Possible CJNG/Chapitos Alliance

The DEA report also noted a possible alliance between Los Chapitos and the CJNG citing Mexican news sources.

"CJNG could capitalize on the conflict between the Los Mayos and Los Chapitos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, essentially by choosing sides in favor of their former rivals, Los Chapitos, against Los Mayos. A strategic alliance between CJNG and Los Chapitos has the potential to expand these groups’ territories, resources, firepower, and access to corrupt officials, which could result in a significant disruption to the existing balance of criminal power in Mexico and could serve to increase northbound drug flow and southbound weapons trafficking at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Should all of this play out as the DEA suspects, there could be an alliance amongst Mexican cartels not seen since the time of the Sinaloa Federation some 20 years ago. The Mayito Faction allied with CDN and the Guasave/BLO Cartel against the CJNG, Los Chapitos and Los Metros could reshape the landscape of Mexican organized crime and drug cartels.

First-term Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego from Arizona emerged as a potential 2028 presidential contender this month after unveiling his own border plan and traveling for an appearance in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

The newcomer has not formally announced plans to run for president, with the next election still over three years away, but he has begun making moves that presidential candidates normally make. One local news outfit, YourBasin.com based in Texas, says that an exploratory committee has been created.

Gallego, who is considered by many a moderate Democrat, only recently stepped into the national spotlight. The border-state liberal defeated conservative firebrand Kari Lake for the Senate last year and has since shown a willingness to work across the aisle to pass legislation.

The 45-year-old senator, an Illinois native, served for 10 years in the House of Representatives before being elected to the upper chamber after which he became the highest ranking Latino Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. He is also a Marine Corps veteran who was deployed to the Iraq War, according to his Senate page.

Gallego reveals a moderate border plan

The senator unveiled his border security plan last week, which includes calls to increase the number of Border Patrol agents, reform the immigration and asylum system, and create pathways to citizenship for migrant children whose parents brought them into the country illegally.

Gallego’s reform plan also seeks to end the abuse in the immigration system, increase the speed that asylum requests are processed and streamline the system in general.

“This is a very moderate approach,” Gallego told Vanity Fair. “We’re not trying to make 12 million people US citizens. We’re saying, ‘hey, we understand where the American public is … The American public doesn’t want families separated. The American public doesn’t want chaos in our communities. They don’t want children to be deported. We can still fight for that, while also saying, You know what? I’m for a secure border.”

The senator said that the difference in his approach to the border compared to President Donald Trump’s is that he wants to hire more Border Patrol agents and immigration judges instead of sending military troops to the border.

“I’m saying, send the Marines back and hire more Border Patrol, hire more trained officials, hire more asylum judges to keep this going,” Gallego said. “Because he hasn’t solved the problem. He’s going to eventually run out of money. He hasn’t solved the problem if you’re still going to have 8 million to 12 million people hiding in the shadows.”

The Arizonan urged his fellow lawmakers to strengthen their message on the border, because it was one of the reasons that the Democratic Party as a whole lost in 2024. Republicans now oversee the executive and legislative branches of the government after flipping the White House and Senate red last year.

“Denying reality does not change reality,” he said. “The Democrats ran a campaign that they wanted to run that would make them feel good, but not necessarily win … Instead of showing that they are sincere about closing the border, they were afraid to piss off this imaginary voter base of Latinos that is for open borders, which doesn’t f***ing exist.”

Conservative firebrand Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., on Wednesday filed a resolution to expel New Jersey Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver, after the Justice Department charged her on Monday with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

McIver allegedly assaulted and impeded the law enforcement officer during a protest at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark. Two other Democratic lawmakers were at the protest but were not charged.

Footage of the protest showed the three lawmakers engaged in a "scuffle" with law enforcement, according to the New Jersey Globe, including McIver, who appeared to try to protect Newark Mayor Ras Baraka during his arrest. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Mace said she would introduce the measure to the House Ethics Committee instead of forcing a House vote on the resolution for the time being.

The three-page resolution accuses McIver of failing to meet the standards of conduct for a lawmaker, and states she "must be held accountable ... in order to safeguard the public's faith in this institution."

McIver responded to the resolution in a post on X, stating "In the South I think they say, 'bless her heart.'"

Other House Republicans have also sought to punish McIver and the other two lawmakers for their conduct at the protest. Fellow South Carolina GOP Rep. William Timmons has introduced a resolution to censure McIver, and Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter has moved to strip all three lawmakers of their committee assignments.

Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Narrowly Passes in House, Heads to Senate

The Republican-led House narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill late early Thursday morning, sending the package to the Senate where it is likely to be revised.

The vote was 215-214, and came after a key House committee voted late Wednesday evening to advance the bill, clearing a major hurdle after days of internal Republican infighting and setting the stage for the floor vote.

That breakthrough was the product of frenzied, late-night negotiations that yielded just enough concessions to bring key GOP holdouts on the House Rules Committee back on board, despite deep divisions over the bill’s cost and proposed changes to Medicaid. In the end, all but one Republican voted the bill out of committee—Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, who skipped the vote—ending the committee’s debate that began about 22 hours earlier.

“I’m convinced we’re going to pass this bill tonight,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the committee vote, signaling that he plans to quickly bring it to the floor. “It may have one or two nos, you never can be certain,” he said, but added: “I think we’re going to get this job done, and we’re going to do it by Memorial Day.”

Around 2:30 a.m. early Thursday, the Speaker moved one step closer to that goal when the House passed a procedural resolution by 217-212 to set up the floor vote on the reconciliation bill. In a sign of likely eventual passage of the bill, only one Republican—Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who has vocally opposed Trump’s megabill—joined Democrats in opposing the resolution, while two Republicans, Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona and Rep. Neal Dunn of Florida, did not vote.

“We’re not rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic tonight—we’re putting coal in the boiler and setting a course for the iceberg,” Massie addressed the floor during debate on the procedural resolution. “If something is beautiful, you don’t do it after midnight.”

Passing the bill out of the House marked a major win for Trump, who has been lobbying aggressively for the Congress to pass his “One Big, Beautiful Bill” to cement a host of conservative priorities central to his second-term agenda. Trump had grown increasingly impatient with Republican holdouts, labeling some of them as "grandstanders" who should leave the party.

The White House and Republican leaders ultimately decided to revise the bill late Wednesday to address concerns from members of the House Freedom Caucus, who were demanding faster, larger spending cuts and energy tax-credit phaseouts. Trump had invited Speaker Johnson and key holdouts to meet at the White House to bridge their differences. Several of those holdouts emerged from that meeting saying it helped them get on the same page as Trump.

A review of the amendments shows that the revised bill would accelerate new Medicaid work requirements to December 2026; end many tax credits for wind energy, solar energy, and battery storage by 2028; nix a tax on gun silencers; formally lock in a $40,000 cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction; and provide $12 billion in funding to reimburse states for assisting with border security since January 2021.

The bill's narrow passage was expected, as Speaker Johnson is operating under very tight margins: House Republicans have one of the thinnest majorities in history at 220-212, meaning Johnson can only afford to lose three members of his caucus if all Democrats are opposed.

Trump and congressional leaders have set July 4 as the deadline for final approval of the legislation, with the Speaker insisting the House must pass the bill before Memorial Day, which is Monday. Some of the holdouts had taken issue with the timeline, saying they won’t be rushed into a deal without concessions.

Trump’s legislation, at more than 1,100 pages, would permanently extend his 2017 tax cuts set to expire at the end of this year while introducing new policies like tax exemptions for tips and overtime wages. It also boosts spending on defense and border security, while reducing spending on Medicaid and food stamps. The measure would also roll back green energy tax credits from the Biden Administration, including the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit incentive.

[STORY HERE] “Tucker Carlson was far from Qatar’s only target in its quest to influence conservative media. Established right-of-center outlets like Fox News Digital, Just The News, the New York Post, the Daily Mail, and the Washington Examiner were all targeted to varying degrees by Qatari foreign agents in the months following Trump’s election, records show.”

Things certainly make a lot more sense now. As the saying goes, “it tracks.”

That said, if Qatar had a media strategy to enhance a foreign policy agenda with the Trump administration, well, that wouldn’t be a surprise; it’s just how things are done. A massive police presence could be seen early Thursday at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and the entrance is closed, sources told Breitbart News.

“There was a security incident that law enforcement responded to outside CIA Headquarters. The main gate is currently closed, employees should seek alternative routes. Additional details will be made available as appropriate,” a CIA spokesperson told Breitbart News.

The CIA announced the entrance closure on X:

NBC Washington reported that Fairfax County officers responded to reports of someone being shot “on CIA property” around 4 a.m.

The shooting was “non-fatal” and an investigation is under way.

CIA headquarters was locked down on March 19, 2025, “after a man brandished what appeared to be a handgun outside the building,” according to ABC News.

=That confrontation morphed into a “barricade incident,” with the March 19, 2025, gunman surrendering after hours of negotiation.

Executives with Disney and ABC News have reportedly asked The View hosts to tone down their bashing of Presdient Donald Trump and political rhetoric overall.

While The View hosts have never shied away from bashing Trump and Republicans in general,executives within the company have reportedly grown weary with the show’s over-emphasis on politics, feeling that it has strayed from its original inception as a talk show for women. According to the Daily Beast, two sources confirmed that Disney CEO Bob Iger and ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic recently held a meeting with The View hosts and executive producer Brian Teta asking them to shift the conversation away from politics.

“Karamehmedovic highlighted episodes with celebrity guests that he said were highly rated, one source said, and encouraged them to lean into such coverage moving forward,” noted the outlet.

While the Iger and Karamehmedovic did not go far to demand a change,the suggestion still upset the hosts, with Ana Navarro reportedly telling them that their audience tunes into the show for political perspectives.

“‘This is what our audience wants. Isn’t it gonna look kind of bad if we’re all of a sudden not talking about politics?’”Ana Navarro reportedly told the two executives.

Other hosts reportedly found the suggestions “silly” and vowed to “keep doing their thing.” During Disney’s Upfront presentation to advertisers last week, Navarro reportedly confronted Iger about the suggestion, per the Daily Beast:

Navarro thanked Iger for allowing the hosts to continue doing their jobs in a politically turbulent environment, the sources said. Iger confirmed he supported the show—but he also reaffirmed that the show needed to tone down its political rhetoric, the sources said.

Another source familiar with the matter said ABC will “constantly have conversations with talent based on viewer feedback, and this instance was no different,” suggesting the show’s viewers have indicated that they want the show to be less political.

Executives asking The View to tone down the political rhetoric comes months after the hosts were forced to issue several legal notes for exaggerated statements about Trump’s cabinet picks on air.It also comes after CBS News and its parent company, Paramount Global, have been working to reach a settlement with President Trumpfor alleged election interference over a heavily edited interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris during a 60 Minutes segment last year.

Republicans have called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the tech conglomerate Google for censorship and email suppression.

In a joint formal letter to FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson released on Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) said that Google has engaged in “Big Tech suppression of conservative speech,” attesting that emails sent to their supporters were immediately sent to “spam folders.”

“In recent election cycles, the national party committees had a substantial number of the emails we send to our supporters routed to the recipients’ spam folders where they are never viewed,” the letter said. “This problem is particularly evident when the committees attempt to send emails to usersof Google’s Gmail service, which routinely delivers fewer emails to inboxes than do other email service providers.”

“These emails are not spam; the committees that we lead only send emails to individuals who have voluntarily opted in to receive emails from us, and we respect every opt-out request that we receive,” the letter added. The letter further stressed that party members should be able to communicate with their supporters via email without having their messages sent to spam folders. The letter also charged that suppressing those email messages also hurts the party’s ability to fundraise. “The cost of Google’s suppression should therefore be calculated not only in dollars never raised, but in votes never cast,” the letter said.

As noted by the EconoTimes, the Republican Party previously filed a lawsuit against Google for “allegedly suppressing conservative content was dismissed by the courts.”

“The renewed allegations underscore ongoing tensions between conservative lawmakers and Silicon Valley giants, particularly over data handling, algorithm transparency, and content moderation policies,” noted the outlet. “The outcome of the FTC’s investigation could have wide-reaching implications for political campaigns and digital communication practices ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.”

A federalmagistrate judgeon Wednesday blasted US Attorney Alina Habba for criminally charging Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and then dismissing his charges nearly a week later.

The Mayor of Newark was arrested for criminal trespass earlier this month after storming the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility.

US Attorney Alina Habba on Monday evening announced her office dropped a misdemeanor trespass charge against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

The charge against Baraka was related to his riotous activity at the Delaney Hall ICE detention center earlier this month.

“After extensive consideration, we have agreed to dismiss Mayor Baraka’s misdemeanor charge or trespass,” Alina Habba said in a statement posted to X on Monday evening.

“In the spirit of public interest, I have invited the mayor to tour Delaney Hall. The government has nothing to hide at this facility, and I will personally accompany the mayor so he can see that firsthand,” Habba said.

Habba also announced her office charged Democrat Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for assaulting ICE agents.

Judge Andre Espinosa, who previously warned US Attorney Alina Habba against making public statements about Ras Baraka, held a virtual hearing on the matter on Wednesday afternoon.

During the hearing, Judge Espinosa blasted Alina Habba and said the arrest and swift decision to dismiss charges against Ras Baraka “suggests a worrisome misstep.”

The judge scolded prosecutors and said they must “operate with a higher standard…”

The “hasty arrest” and swift dismissal of a trespassing charge against Mayor Ras Baraka “suggests a worrisome misstep” by interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba, a federal judge said Wednesday afternoon.

U.S. Magistrate Judge André M. Espinosa granted what he called the “embarrassing retraction” of the misdemeanor charge following a May 9 incident at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark that unfolded in a tussle between federal authorities and three members of Congress and resulted in the arrest of the city’s Democratic mayor, who is also running for governor.

Espinosa said an arrest is a “severe” step, not part of an investigation, and he said prosecutors must not try to secure convictions at all cost, satisfy public clamor or advance political agendas.

“Your office must operate with a higher standard than that,”he said.

Small plane crashes into San Diego neighborhood of Tierrasanta

Police said a small Cessna aircraft crashed around 4 a.m. in the area of Sample and Salmon Street, just east of Interstate 15 and Aero Drive.

SAN DIEGO — A small plane crashed into a neighborhood in Tierrasanta early Thursday morning, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Police said the incident happened around 4 a.m. in the area of Sample and Salmon Street. At least 15 homes were affected by the crash, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. CBS 8 crews on the scene reported seeing large plane parts and heavy smoke around the neighborhood where the plane crashed.

As of 5:30 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue said no one had been transported from the scene, and there had been no distress calls. SDFD has evacuated multiple neighborhoods around the impacted area. The department is working to go through every home the plane had impacted, to ensure no one was hurt.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, it was a privately owned Cessna aircraft, which was on its way to Montgomery Field. SDFD is actively searching for the pilot and other people who may have been on board. SDFD is working in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration, California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Police Department, the National Transportation Safety Board and the military.

SDFD said the incident is now a HAZMAT situation, due to the flow of plane fuel going down neighborhood streets.

Hancock Elementary and Miller Elementary are closed. Miller Elementary will provide childcare.

A traffic alert was issued for a nearby freeway. The off-ramp from Northbound I-15 to Aero Dr. is closed. Restrictions are in place on Sample Street.

Moscow has repeatedly raised concerns that Kiev could exploit a truce to rearm and replenish its ranks

US President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected demands by EU officials that negotiations on the Ukraine conflict should result in an unconditional ceasefire, the Wall Street Journal has reported citing sources.

Following a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Trump held phone calls with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British PM Keir Starmer.The European leaders reportedly insisted that Trump should apply more pressure on Putin and demanded that the next round of talks on resolving the conflict must end with an unconditional truce.

Trump, however, reportedlyindicated that he did not like the use of the term “unconditional,”particularly in the context of discussing measures to resolve the Ukraine conflict. The WSJ claimed that theEuropean leaders “eventually agreed to drop their insistence on the adjective.”

Over the past few weeks, Russia has announced several limited ceasefires, specifically to observe holidays such as Orthodox Easter and Victory Day. Moscow and Kiev also relaunched direct peace talks in Istanbul, Türkiye last week, marking the first time the two sides sat together since Ukraine unilaterally abandoned negotiations in 2022.

However, Kiev, as well as itsWestern backers, has continued to insist on a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Moscow has repeatedly rejected the demand, arguing that a number of issues have to be addressed before such a measure can be agreed.

The Kremlin has indicated that it is open to the idea of a ceasefire in general, but has demanded guarantees that Ukraine wouldn’t exploit the truce to rearm and regroup its forces only to resume hostilities at a later date.

Russian officials have also stressed that Moscow would prefer to work towards establishing a long and just peace that would resolve the root causes of the conflict rather than negotiating short-term tactical pauses in the fighting.

Damage extensive after small plane crashes into San Diego neighborhood

A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood during foggy weather early Thursday, setting about 15 homes on fire as well as vehicles, and forcing evacuations along several blocks, authorities said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna 550 went down around 3:45 a.m. near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in the Tierrasanta community, specifically in the area of Sculpin Street and Santo Road.

Authorities have not yet released information on how many people were aboard the aircraft or if there were any injuries. San Diego Police and other first responders were on scene, and residents were advised to avoid the area, KSWB-TV reported.

“We have jet fuel all over the place,” Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy said during a news conference. “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.”

He said “there is a direct hit to multiple homes” and described “a gigantic debris field” in a dense neighborhood.

Christopher Moore, who lives one street over from the crash site, said he and his wife were awakened by a loud bang and saw smoke when they looked out the window.

They grabbed their two young children and ran out of the house. On their way out of the neighborhood, they saw a car engulfed in flames.

“It was definitely horrifying for sure, but sometimes you’ve just got to drop your head and get to safety,” he said.

Eddy said it was very foggy at the time the private plane crashed. “You could barely see in front of you,” he said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, with the NTSB leading the probe, officials said.

Romania’s top court rejects complaint about presidential election interference

Similar claims following an anti-establishment candidate’s first round win last year resulted in the vote being scrapped

Romania’s Constitutional Court hasrejected an election challenge filed by presidential candidate George Simion, ruling on Thursday that his claims of foreign interference were “unfounded.”Months earlier, the same court had annulled the first round of a vote, citing “irregularities” and intelligence claims of external meddling.

On Sunday, the conservative EU critic lost a run-off vote against pro-Brussels Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan by a single-digit margin. Simion contested the outcome on Tuesday,alleging “external interferences by state and non-state actors,” but the court unanimously rejected his petition.

The ruling is final, the court said in a statement, pledging to provide a full explanation at a later date. In response, Simion, who has accused several nations, including France, of orchestrating interference,labeled the court’s decision a “continuation of a coup d’état” and vowed to continue his political fight.

Last year, independent right-wing presidential candidate Calin Georgescu secured an unexpected lead, which the government attributed to foreign voter manipulation. Investigative journalists later suggested the campaign that triggered the annulment may have been orchestrated by a Romanian political party to divide the conservative electorate. Georgescu was disqualified from the re-run.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov claimed last week that the head ofFrance’s foreign intelligence agency, the DGSE, had asked him to suppress conservative voices on the platform during Romania’s campaign season. The agency publicly denied the allegation. Durov in turn accused French authorities of deflecting criticism by linking him to unrelated criminal investigations involving users of his platform.

Following Simion’s challenge, Durov offered to testify before Romanian authorities about the interactions with French officials, saying he would do so “if it helps Romanian democracy.”

Ahead of the run-off vote, Romania’s Foreign Ministry accused Russia of attempting to influence the outcome. Moscow ridiculed the allegations, calling the process a “mess” and stating that it shouldn’t even count as a proper vote.

Two Israeli embassy staff shot dead outside Jewish Museum in Washington DC

US authorities are investigating a fatal shooting near an American Jewish Committee event in the capital

Two Israeli Embassy staff members were shot dead near the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday evening, in what Israeli officials have condemned as a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.”

The attack occurred during an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) at the museum. Authorities confirmed that two individuals connected to the Israeli Embassy were gunned down just outside the venue, but their names have not yet been released.

“Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC,” US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem posted on X. “We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share.”

The incident took place near 3rd Street and F Street Northwest,directly across from the FBI’s Washington Field Office. North Korea reports ‘serious incident’ during naval destroyer launch

Leader Kim Jong-un has demanded the damaged ship’s restoration before June, according to state media

North Korean state media reported a “serious accident” during the attempted launch of a 5,000-ton naval destroyer on Wednesday.

The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, attended the side-launch ceremony at the Chongjin Shipyard.He observed the incident and issued a stern rebuke, news outlets said.

According to reports,the slide system beneath the ship’s stern activated prematurely, resulting in a failure of the slides to move in parallel and damage to the vessel. Officialsattributed the incident to “inexperienced command and operational carelessness.”

Kim condemned the mishap as an unacceptable act of criminal negligence and ordered immediate repairs. He instructed that the warship be fully restored before a major meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in June.The government reportedly views the failure as a political embarrassmentwith implications for the country’s global image.

No photos or video footage of the incident have been released by Pyongyang.

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill has PASSED the House of Representatives — without a single Democrat voting to cut taxes, secure the border, or protect taxpayer-funded benefits for Americans who need them.

Here are only a few of the policies Democrats just unanimously opposed:

The largest tax cut in history.

This means $13,300 more for American families and wage increases up to $11,000 for workers with a double-digit percent decrease to their tax bills — plus NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME, a tax cut on seniors’ Social Security benefits, an expanded child tax credit, and a tax deduction on American-made vehicles.

Americans making between $30,000 and $80,000 per year will see their taxes cut by 15% next year.

Raising wages. American workers will see wage increases of up to $11,600; a typical family with two kids will see take-home pay rise by up to $13,300.

Strong border security. This makes President Trump’s border crackdown permanent with the largest investment ever — funding AT LEAST one million illegal immigrant deportations per year, thousands of miles of new border wall and barriers, 18,000+ new immigration officials, and pay raises for our great ICE and Border Patrol agents.

Protecting Medicaid for American citizens who need it. This ENDS taxpayer-funded benefits for at least 1.4 million illegal immigrants who are gaming the system and requires able-bodied Americans to work if they receive benefits.

Pay raises for troops. This increases special pay for servicemembers and gives them higher allowances for housing, healthcare, and family assistance.

Ending taxpayer-funded chemical castration and mutilation. It reverses the Biden-era mandate that Medicaid cover so-called “gender transition” procedures.

Modernizing air traffic control. This will allow President Trump to act where the Biden Administration failed by completely overhauling the systems that keep Americans flying safely and efficiently.

Revolutionizing the nation’s defense. This funds President Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense shield, restocks America’s arsenal, expands our naval fleet, and improves military readiness to meet the needs of a changing world.

Protecting family farmers. The bill prevents the greedy death tax from hitting two million family-owned farms that would otherwise see their exemptions cut in half and cuts taxes on farmers by over $10 billion.

Implants 3D-printed in space could enable nerve regeneration

After 3D printing implantable medical devices aboard the International Space Station, Auxilium Biotechnologies has enrolled the first patient in a clinical trial of its technology for nerve regeneration.

San Diego-based Auxilium Biotechnologies designed the investigational NeuroSpan Bridge device to accelerate nerve regeneration and nerve targeting after debilitating nerve injuries to extremities.

About 3% of civilian trauma cases and 30% of military trauma cases involve nerve injury, said Auxilium Biotechnologies CEO Jacob Koffler.

“Nerves don’t regenerate where they need to go. They do that very randomly, sometimes even going backward towards the proximal end,” he said in a Medical Design & Outsourcing interview.

“What we have is a technology that is able to organize this regeneration, keep them in the same pathway and bring them to the original target that was denervated due to the injury.”

The NeuroSpan-1 pivotal study is for an anticipated FDA 510(k) clearance submission.

It will include 80 patients with upper or lower extremity nerve injuries to compare the Auxilium Biotechnologies NeuroSpan Bridge against the Integra LifeSciences NeuroGen Nerve Guide and nerve autograft repair.

The NeuroSpan Bridge implants range from 1 cm to 3 cm in length and are made from what Koffler described as a biocompatible, degradable material that has been “known in biomedical research for many years.”

He declined to name the material for competitive reasons. Integra LifeSciences makes its NeuroGen Nerve Guide out of an absorbable Type 1 bovine collagen tube, and the NeuroSpan-1 study will exclude patients who are allergic to bovine products.

The clinical trial’s primary endpoints will measure the change in static two-point discrimination (2PD) at 12 months along with complications and adverse events.

Secondary endpoints will measure motor function, sensory function, moving 2PD and Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) scores. The study will also compared surgery times, pain scores and readmission rates.

About 2,000 museums are offering free admission to currently serving military personnel and up to five family members now through Sept. 1, Labor Day.

Participating museums, large and small, can be found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

They include history, art and children’s museums; historic sites; botanical gardens; zoos; aquariums; and more.

“For 15 years, Blue Star Museums has opened doors for military families to explore, connect, and feel at home in their communities,” said Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families, in an announcement of this year’s launch.

A spot check of participating museums finds interesting nuggets, like the Kansas Barbed Wire Museum in LaCrosse.

The “Barbed Wire Goes to War” exhibit displays military wire and tools. Concertina wire — rolls of twisted barbed wire — first came into widespread use in World War I.

One of their more unusual exhibits is a massive raven’s nest built mostly out of hundreds of bits of barbed wire, lined with grass as a cushion for their eggs. A railroad engineer discovered it in a tree in Greeley County in the 1960s.

Some museums offer free admission to the general public all year, and some may offer special discounts for military and veterans. For example, admission is free at the Barbed Wire Museum, but donations are encouraged.

A pair of taikonauts have completed their first spacewalk aboard China's Tiangong space station, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

Two Shenzhou-20 crewmembers performed the mission's first extravehicular activity (EVA) on Thursday (May 22).

The duo worked outside the Chinese low-Earth orbit laboratory for eight hours, wrapping up at 4:49 a.m. EDT (0849 GMT; 4:49 p.m. local time in Beijing).

Chinese astronauts Chen Dong and Chen Zhongrui served as the EVA's assigned spacewalkers, while their crewmate Wang Jie assisted from inside Tiangong with mission operators coordinating on Earth.

Dong and Zhongrui exited the space station through the node cabin of the Tianhe module, marking the first time that airlock has been used for an EVA since Tiangong became operational.

This was the 19th time taikonauts aboard Tiangong have conducted an EVA; many of these spacewalks have focused on installing debris shields to the station's exterior.

With assistance from the station's robotic arm, Dong and Zhongrui successfully positioned a protective sheet on a designated exterior location on Tiangong. The pair also performed routine station maintenance and equipment inspections.

The Shenzhou-20 crew arrived at Tiangong on April 24, and are just about one month into their six-month-long mission. The trio replaced China's Shenzhou-19 astronauts, who returned to Earth on April 30.

China has at least one more crewed mission planned for 2025. Shenzhou-21 is expected to launch sometime this fall.

The Tiangong space station was completed in 2022 and has a continual occupancy planned for at least the next decade. The station presently consists of three main modules, but allows for China to launch more should they wish to expand the orbiting lab.

Pentagon boosts budget for Palantir’s AI software in major expansion of Project Maven

The Pentagon is dramatically increasing spending on artificial intelligence for military operations, raising the contract ceiling for Palantir Technologies’ Maven Smart System to nearly $1.3 billion through 2029.

The Defense Department announced May 21 it is upping the spending limit for software licenses under Maven by $795 million, compared to a ceiling of $480 million just a year ago.

The new funding is specifically for U.S. combatant commands, which oversee military operations across geographic regions.

Project Maven, launched by the Pentagon in 2017, was designed to accelerate the adoption of AI and machine learning across the U.S. military.

The program uses artificial intelligence to analyze massive volumes of imagery and data from sources like satellites, drones and other sensors, enabling rapid detection, identification and tracking of objects of interest.

In 2022, operational control of the geospatial intelligence aspects of Maven was transferred to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which coordinates intelligence gathering from satellite imagery and other location-based sources.

Palantir has separate contracts with NGA and for Maven Smart System software licenses for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Space Force.

“Adoption by the U.S. combatant commands for the first year has been far greater than expectations,” according to a report from William Blair investment firm analysts.

The much higher contract ceiling reflects the “mass adoption of the Maven Smart System for geospatial awareness and targeting.”

NGA Director Vice Adm. Frank Whitworth said the agency recently awarded Palantir a $28 million contract to expand access to Maven Smart System for the agency’s analysts.

There are now more than 20,000 active users of Maven across more than 35 military service and combatant command software tools. The user base has more than quadrupled since March of last year and more than doubled since January alone.

“Maven Smart System is designed to speed up detection, identification and characterization of features and objects in drone and satellite imagery,” Whitworth said May 21 at the GEOINT Symposium in St. Louis.

From hours to minutes

The AI system is transforming how quickly military units can identify and engage targets.

Whitworth said Maven helps decrease targeting workflow timelines by a substantial amount, with one unit reporting that its intelligence-operations timelines during a recent exercise dropped from hours to minutes from sensing to target engagement.

“Army leaders, specifically, are trying to leverage Maven to meet a new vision for units to make a thousand high-quality decisions — choosing and dismissing targets on the battlefield—in one hour,” Whitworth said.

He described Maven as “our marquee targeting program of record,” adding: “We embrace the speed and scale AI brings to our tradecraft.”

Under the Maven program there is close collaboration between government agencies and private contractors, Whitworth said. He described targeting operations using AI and geospatial intelligence as a “team sport.”

“Everyone dives in on this … our own experts, Palantir’s experts, even experts from the combatant commands,” he said. About a dozen subcontractors also support the Maven Smart System.

Palantir, founded in 2003 in Palo Alto, California, specializes in big data analytics and has become a major Pentagon contractor.

The company’s Maven Smart System uses AI algorithms and machine learning to scan, identify, and prioritize enemy systems and objects by fusing data from various intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance sources.

An antisemitic violent attack has been carried out against the Swedish Member of the European Parliament Alice Teodorescu Måwe @alicemedce.

A staffer with Middle Eastern roots of the Swedish Left Party (their name was ”Left Party - The Communists” until 1990”) assaulted Alice in a hallway in the European Parliament.

Alice is one of the main Israeli allies in Sweden and said earlier this week that recognising the right to a Jewish homeland in Israel should be a prerequisite for foreigners wanting to obtain Swedish citizenship.

Security guards rushed to the scene to stop the attack and the European Parliament says CCTV footage supports Alice’s claim that she was attacked.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 10th Delta Operations Squadron, a unit under Space Delta 10, held a change of command ceremony May 2, 2025, at Patrick Space Force Base, ushering in a new phase for the squadron as it deepens its focus on operational wargaming and expands its presence in Florida.

Lt. Col. Sheena Mira relinquished command to Lt. Col. Justin Jones during a ceremony attended by U.S. Space Force and Air Force personnel, Space Launch Delta 45 leadership, mission partners, and community leaders.

Col. S. Shannon DaSilva, commander of Space Delta 10, highlighted the squadron’s evolving role and the strategic significance of its mission realignment.

“While this guidon is still the emblem of the 10th Delta Operations Squadron, the original purpose of this unit has changed dramatically over the last year,” she said.

“Originally a unit stood up to provide traditional S-staff functions to Delta 10, the 10 DOS mission has now shifted into one of only two wargaming squadrons tasked to support the Chief of Space Operations’ direction to evaluate operational concepts and shape the future force.”

Now headquartered at Patrick SFB, 10 DOS is growing to meet the demands of its expanded mission. The squadron is adding new personnel and increasing coordination with joint, allied, interagency, and academic partners to support the Space Force’s enterprise-level wargaming efforts.

Under Lt. Col. Jones’ leadership, the squadron will continue to strengthen collaboration with industry and academia, leveraging modeling and simulation expertise in the region to advance Space Force wargaming capabilities.

“We are in a pivotal position to influence the Space Force's structure and capabilities through wargame operations. Our tactical decisions will have strategic impacts, directly shaping the development and application of combat power for our Nation,” said Jones.

10 DOS is responsible for executing the Space Force’s external wargaming mission, which includes advancing the Service’s role in joint and allied wargames, managing the first-ever Space Force wargame education course, and designing whole-of-government wargames to educate senior decision-makers on space capabilities.

The squadron also plays a critical role in ensuring the success of the Schriever Wargame Series—the Space Force’s premier Title 10 wargame involving allied and partner nations—with this year’s capstone event scheduled for August.

“This is a rare moment of opportunity,” DaSilva said. “10 DOS is poised to shape how the Space Force trains, integrates, and innovates through wargaming on a global scale.”

Space Delta 10 is the Space Force’s organization for wargaming, field experimentation, concept evaluation, and doctrine development. It also facilitates the Service’s lessons learned program and is responsible for wargame assessments.

Currently aligned under Space Training and Readiness Command, Space Delta 10 prepares Guardians to be space warfighters while forging critical partnerships across the joint force, industry, academia, and numerous allied and partner nations.

St. Louis, Mo. (AFNS) - As delivered by U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman on May 21, 2025.

Thank you for having me! You know, the last time I spoke at a GEOINT Symposium, it was April 2022. Russia had demonstrated an antisatellite capability, and China had tested a hypersonic glide vehicle.

Later that year, I was promoted to Chief of Space Operations… and—just like magic—all that bad behavior STOPPED… I’m just sayin’.

Seriously, though, so much has happened in the last three years, and there’s no sign of a slowdown. So, I’m really excited to have this opportunity to speak with such an important audience.

But first, let me start by thanking Ronda Schrenk and Robert Cardillo for inviting me. Thanks to Sue Gordon for moderating.

And thanks to the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation as a whole for sponsoring this event. The world of GEOINT is evolving rapidly—every day, we see new requirements, new technology, new challenges.

That’s why it’s so important to get together like this. To talk and, more importantly, to listen to each other.

That’s why it’s such a pleasure to be here today with so many friends from across the GEOINT community. In particular, I want to recognize Vice Admiral Whitworth.

NGA has been a wonderful partner to the Space Force. And as Director, I’ve appreciated Trey’s expertise as an Intelligence Officer and his deep passion for GEOINT.

He is immensely proud of the work that NGA and its partners have done, and he has every right to be.

On that note, let me congratulate NGA on the construction of its new campus! Next NGA West will provide an exceptional platform for partnership and collaboration long into the future.

You know, I’ve had the opportunity to work across the Interagency for many years, including as Commander of the Aerospace Data Facility in Colorado.

And to some degree, I was trained in GEOINT by NIMA at Sunnyvale. So I’ve worked hand-in-glove with GEOINT professionals.

There is great power in people from different organizations sitting side-by-side in pursuit of the same mission.

When you break down the barriers between organizations—when you set aside tribalism and organizational orthodoxy—what you’re left with is singular focus on mission... and the creative solutions that focus inspires.

It doesn’t matter if your badge reads Space Force, Air Force, NGA, NRO, or whatever else… all that matters is that you have a job to do, and that job is delivering quality Intelligence to the customer.

Collaboration across agencies is vital… it’s the key to solving problems bigger than any single entity could solve alone. That’s why I’m excited for the unveiling of Next NGA West, and I have no doubt that we’ll all be better for it.

As a student of History, I also have to take a moment to applaud the choice of St. Louis as the campus’ home.

After all, NGA’s history in the city dates back to WWII, when the Army Map Service opened its doors at the St. Louis Arsenal. The Map Service was the Department of Defense’s military cartographic agency from World War Two until 1968.

For decades, it compiled, published, and distributed topographical maps and related materials for use by the U.S. Armed Forces… including on D-Day and during the Korean War.

It might surprise you to learn that the Army Map Service even supported space exploration. It mapped the moon for use during the Apollo missions, and it contributed to the development of our modern GPS system, which remains a critical Space Force mission to this day.
