Trump hopeful for Russia-Ukraine talks

The US president mentioned the possibility of taking part in the Moscow-proposed talks himself

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his hopes that direct talks between Moscow and Kiev as proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place and suggested he could even take part in them.

Trump delivered the remarks during a press conference on Monday, describing the proposed meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, as “very important.” He even floated the possibility that he might participate in the negotiations.

“I think you may have a good result at the Thursday meeting in Türkiye between Russia and Ukraine.I believe the two leaders are going to be there. I was thinking about flying over. I don’t know where I’m going to be on Thursday, I’ve got so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying over there,” Trump stated.

The suggestion was swiftly welcomed by Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, who called it a “right idea” that could “change a lot.”

Early on Sunday, Putin proposed resuming direct peace negotiations with Kiev without any preconditions, stating that the talks could ultimately yield “some kind of new truce” and a ceasefire. “We are set on serious negotiations with Ukraine. Their aim is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and to achieve a long-term lasting peace for a historical perspective,” the president stressed.

The proposal received a mixed reaction from Kiev and its Western backers, all of whom reiterated their demand to establish a 30-day truce before beginning any negotiations. Trump, however, urged Kiev to “immediately” accept the proposal and engage in talks.

It was not immediately clear on what basis Trump concluded that the Russian and Ukrainian leaders would be meeting on Thursday. After Trump urged Ukraine to agree to the proposal, Zelensky claimed he would be waiting for Putin in Türkiye “personally” but reiterated the 30-day ceasefire demand.

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that Russia remains committed to “resuming direct talks in Istanbul without any preconditions” but did not comment on the prospect of Putin participating in the talks.

• The Order directs the U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce to take action to ensure foreign countries are not engaged in practices that purposefully and unfairly undercut market prices and drive price hikes in the United States.

• The Order instructs the Administration to communicate price targets to pharmaceutical manufacturers to establish that America, the largest purchaser and funder of prescription drugs in the world, gets the best deal.

• The Secretary of Health and Human Services will establish a mechanism through which American patients can buy their drugs directly from manufacturers who sell to Americans at a “Most-Favored-Nation” price, bypassing middlemen.

• If drug manufacturers fail to offer most-favored-nation pricing, the Order directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to: (1) propose rules that impose most-favored-nation pricing; and (2) take other aggressive measures to significantly reduce the cost of prescription drugs to the American consumer and end anticompetitive practices.

GETTING A BETTER DEAL FOR AMERICANS: President Trump is once again taking action to keep pharmaceutical manufacturers from charging Americans high drug prices while giving steep discounts to other wealthy nations.

• According to recent data, the prices Americans pay for brand-name drugs are more than three times the price other OECD nations pay, even after accounting for discounts manufacturers provide in the U.S.

• The United States has less than five percent of the world’s population, yet funds roughly 75% of global pharmaceutical profits.

• Drug manufacturers discount their products to gain access to foreign markets and then subsidize those discounts through high prices charged in America—in essence, Americans are subsidizing drug-manufacturer profits and foreign health systems, despite drug manufacturers benefiting from generous research subsidies and enormous healthcare spending by the U.S. Government.

• In his first term, President Trump took historic action to keep Medicare and seniors from paying more for drugs than economically comparable countries, which the Biden Administration rescinded before it could take effect.

• Instead of fixing this problem, the Biden Administration’s greatest achievement was to negotiate prices that were, on average, 78 percent higher than in 11 comparable countries as part of Biden’s effort to “beat Medicare.”

DELIVERING ON PROMISES TO PUT AMERICAN PATIENTS FIRST: President Trump is delivering on his promise to once again put America first by furthering efforts to get American patients and taxpayers a fair deal for prescription drugs.

Algeria accuses France of bypassing diplomatic protocol, including failing to notify Algiers before appointing personnel

Algeria has ordered the immediate dismissal of a number of French diplomatic personnel whose appointments by Paris did not follow established protocols, the North African state’s press service (APS) reported on Sunday.

According to the outlet, France did not comply with required procedures in the appointments of at least fifteen employees who were assigned to diplomatic or consular positions in Algiers.

On Sunday, Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a senior French embassy official to protest “serious and repeated” breaches of international conventions governing diplomatic appointments.

“These employees, who previously held mission passports, have been granted diplomatic passports to facilitate their entry into Algeria… The same list included two employees from the French Ministry of the Interior, who were intended to perform part of the duties of those recently declared persona non grata,” APS reported, citing sources.

The alleged diplomatic breach comes as relations between the two countries remain strained on several fronts.Algeria has accused France of repeatedly denying entry to holders of Algerian diplomatic passports. The accreditation process for the former French colony’s newly appointed Consuls General in Paris and Marseille, as well as seven other consular officials, has reportedly also been stalled for over five months.

The latest move follows a similar expulsion in April, when Algeria ordered 12 French embassy staff to leave the country over what it described as “hostile acts” and interference in internal affairs. The decision came shortly after the arrest of an Algerian consular official in France, who is one of three Algerians charged with kidnapping government critic Amir Boukhors in 2024.

The arrest sparked outrage in Algiers, which condemned it as a violation of diplomatic immunity.Tensions have since worsened, fueled by disputes over visa policies, unresolved colonial-era grievances, and France’s support for Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara issue.

McDonald’s, on Monday, announced plans to hire up to 375,000 workers this summer at a news conference that included U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

During Monday’s event, McDonald’s and Chavez-DeRemer celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the company’s “Archways to Opportunity” program, which provides tuition assistance and helps employees achieve education goals, like earning a high school degree.

McDonald’s and the broader restaurant industry typically embark on hiring sprees to meet higher demand during the summer. Monday’s announcement set McDonald’s biggest hiring target in years. In 2020, as it was reopening its dining rooms, the chain said it was looking to hire just 260,000 restaurant employees.

Through its company-owned and franchised restaurants, McDonald’s is one of the nation’s largest private employers. McDonald’s claims that 1 in 8 Americans have worked in one of its restaurants at some point.

Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Trump regularly mocked Vice President Kamala Harris’ claim to have been a McDonald’s alum; McDonald’s tried to stay out of the fight, saying in a statement that it wasn’t a political brand and didn’t have all of its employment records dating back to the 1980s.

Anyone who owned an Apple device over the last decade may be able to claim part of a $95 million class action lawsuit against the tech giant.

According to the lawsuit, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and MacBooks dating back to 2014 may have secretly recorded their users' private conversations after the devices unintentionally activated Apple's voice assistant Siri.

A notice about the case, Lopez v. Apple, has advised anyone who believes Siri spied on their confidential or private calls between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024 to submit a claim for damages.

Apple's iMacs, Apple TV streaming boxes, HomePod speakers, and iPod Touches are also included in the lawsuit.

Although Apple has denied that their devices spied on users, the $3 trillion company reached a settlement in the case, agreeing to give users up to $20 per Siri device in their claim.

However, that amount could end up being less depending on the number of people making claims against Apple.

Each customer can also only claim up to five Apple devices, meaning that the most a person can recover from the alleged spying case is $100.

Apple users have until July 2, 2025 to enter their claim in the settlement, which can be done by on the Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website. https://lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com/submit-claim

Some Apple customers may have received an email or letter in the mail that provided them with a claim identification code and confirmation code that allowed them to enter the settlement right away.

However, you don't need to have received a notice to make a claim. For those filing on the settlement website, you'll have to swear under oath that you experienced an unauthorized activation of your Siri voice assistant while having a private conversation.

If Apple users are not sure if that actually happened, they can find out if they're eligible for the settlement by speaking with the lawsuit's administrators on their website or over the phone.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in 2021 after some Apple users claimed that recordings of their private conversations were obtained by Apple and shared with third parties after the Siri feature on their devices was unknowingly turned on.

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit, including lead plaintiff Fumiko Lopez, alleged that they received targeted ads based on the topics discussed in their private conversations near Siri-enabled devices.

Two plaintiffs claimed they saw ads for Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden after discussing those brands aloud. Another person received an ad for a medical treatment after talking about the procedure privately with their doctor.

Moreover, an Apple whistleblower came forward in 2019, revealing to The Guardian how Apple third-party contractors listened to recordings to assess Siri's accuracy.

The whistleblower revealed that contractors regularly heard private recordings, including medical discussions, criminal activities, and intimate moments, captured due to accidental activations of the Siri voice assistant.

After the bombshell report, Apple issued a statement defending their practice of reviewing audio samples taken using Siri.

They added that only an extremely small number of Siri recordings were studied and the recordings were anonymized, not linked to Apple IDs, and that contractors were bound by strict confidentiality agreements.

'Our process involved reviewing a small sample of audio from Siri requests — less than 0.2 percent — and their computer-generated transcripts, to measure how well Siri was responding and to improve its reliability,' Apple stated in 2019.

Despite their defense of the tactics, Apple would suspend the program just days after the whistleblower report.

For those who decide to join the settlement, there is a catch to taking the small payout from Apple.

'Unless you exclude yourself with an opt-out request, you cannot sue, continue to sue, or be part of any other lawsuit against Apple arising out of or related to the claims in this case,' the settlement website explained.

A final settlement hearing is scheduled for August 1, which will decide whether to approve the agreement between Apple and its customers.

The time it takes for those payments to reach Apple users will depend on whether anyone files an appeal to the settlement decision.

If there are no appeals to the $95 million deal, the checks are excepted to start rolling out shortly after the court closes the case this summer.

When I first read the headlines on social media claiming the Episcopal Church had announced it was against the doctrine of their faith to help white refugees, I will admit I thought the headlines were clickbait and over blown. However, then I went to read the actual announcement and press release from the Church…. It’s true.

The Episcopal Church has announced, publicly, they were contacted by the federal government as part of an ongoing contract for refugee resettlement, to assist in the transition of white Afrikaner farmers who are fleeing racial violence and given refugee status by the Trump administration.

Specifically, because of the color of their skin, the Episcopal Church is now saying, “in light of our church’s steadfast commitment to racial justice … we are not able to take this step.”

The Church notes their business model using refugee settlement payments from the United States Government has been disrupted by theTrump administration’s pause on funding, and as a result of their no longer getting paid– in combination with the racial profile of the refugees they are now being asked to assist, they will shut down all refugee settlement efforts. It is a stunning statement:

Obviously, if we drop all pretending, the decision of the Church is based on their superseding doctrine of money, which, in this clear example, outweighs their doctrine of faith.

If there was ever a racial discrimination lawsuit teed up for the Dept of Justice Civil Rights Division, it would be this one. The Episcopal Church receives government funds for refugee settlement. The Episcopal Church is admitting the color of the refugee skin is a determining factor in their decision-making of who to assist. There is not a clearer example of self-admitted discrimination than this one.

Unfortunately, the DOJ Civil Rights Division is now headed by Deputy AG Harmeet Dhillon, I strongly doubt she will take any action.

CTH has long outlined the “faith-based” motives behind the business end of illegal immigration and refugee settlement. {GO DEEP} Factually, there are many national religious organizations who operate the business of “human trafficking” under the guise of immigration settlement services. {GO DEEP #2} It is an unfortunate reality of the corrupt world we live in.

However, that said, I have not before witnessed a well-known religious denomination so openly proclaim their need to retain racism as a critical variable within their business model.

Perhaps the congregation size within the Episcopalian faith might suffer as a consequence of these admissions.

A few drops of saliva can now reveal what used to require a scalpel, a syringe or a scan. Scientists have developed ways to analyze spit for the tiniest traces of illness – from mouth cancer to diabetes, and even brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Unlike blood tests or biopsies, saliva is easy to collect, painless and inexpensive. During the COVID pandemic, some countries used saliva-based testing for rapid screening.

This isn’t entirely new. Scientists first noticed the diagnostic potential of spit decades ago. In the 1980s, researchers used saliva to detect hormones and drug use. By the 1990s, it was being explored as a way to detect HIV.

What’s new is the speed and precision.Today’s techniques can detect subtle molecular shifts that would have been impossible to measure just a few years ago.

Saliva holds a surprising amount of information. It’s full of tiny fragments of DNA, RNA, proteins and fats – many of which change when disease takes hold. Researchers have already shown that saliva can be used to detect changes linked to diabetes, Parkinson’s, heart disease and some cancers.

A recent study even showed saliva could help distinguish between healthy people and those with mild cognitive impairment, a possible early sign of Alzheimer’s.

In dentistry, spit science is being studied for early signs of gum disease and even the risk of tooth decay.

A light-based technique called Raman spectroscopy is one of the latest tools being used to scan saliva for hidden chemical changes. It works by bouncing harmless light off molecules in a spit sample and reading the pattern it sends back – a kind of fingerprint for what’s happening inside your body.

It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is already being used in labs to detect early signs of cancer and other diseases often before symptoms appear.

This could be a gamechanger for oral cancer, which often starts with small, painless changes inside the mouth that are easy to miss. Early detection is vital, but many people don’t realize they have a problem until it’s much harder to treat.

A simple spit test during a regular dental check-up could help find cancer early, before it spreads.

It’s not just about cancer, either.Saliva is being trialed as a tool to monitor everything from stress levels to infections. Saliva tests could monitor stress levels.

Simplicity

What makes saliva so appealing is its simplicity – no needles, no specialist clinics. Samples can often be collected at home, posted to a lab and analysed within hours. This could make a huge difference in places with limited access to healthcare or for people who avoid doctors out of fear, cost or time.

Of course, not every disease leaves a clear marker in spit and researchers are still working out which conditions saliva can reliably detect. But the idea of using what’s already naturally produced by the body to give an early warning is a powerful one. It could help catch disease when it’s most treatable, save lives and make healthcare faster, cheaper and more comfortable for everyone.

There’s still work to be done before spit tests become part of routine check-ups. Larger clinical trials are needed and researchers are still fine tuning the best ways to analyse and interpret the data. But the direction of travel is clear: the days of saliva being seen as just drool are over.

Saliva may not seem glamorous, but thanks to the rise of spit science, it’s fast becoming one of the most promising tools in the fight against disease. A future where your dentist, doctor, or even you could spot health problems early with nothing more than simple spit.

A Utah oil magnate was arrested along with his wife in a dramatic raid on their opulent 27,000-square-foot mansion after allegedly smuggling more than $300 million worth of oil from Mexico to the US with the help of drug cartels, according to reports.

James and Kelly Jensen were arrested on April 23 by US Marshals, who used battering rams to bust through the doors of the couple’s $9.2 million mansion in outside Salt Lake City, KSLTV reported.

“They were unwilling to come out,” Assistant US Attorney Michael Hess said of the family, which has deep political ties — Kelly’s father, Gordon Walker, worked in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Ronald Reagan, while her mother, Carlene Walker, was a Utah state Senator, according to KVEO.

Just days earlier on April 17, the Jensens were indicted on charges they conspired to buy and smuggle more than 2,800 shipments of stolen oil from Mexico into the US as part of an alleged scheme that began three years ago, according to the feds.

The Jensens’ company made payments for the crude oil to “businesses in Mexico that operate only through the permission of Mexican criminal organizations,” according to the feds.

The feds alleged the family used their ill-gotten gains to buy a new home and cars — and have moved to seize them.

Their sons Zachary and Max, were also allegedly in on it and were also indicted, though it is unclear if they were arrested at the mountainside mansion with their parents.

The family owns and operates Arroyo Terminals, a Texas company that buys and sells crude oil at a property just miles from the US border in Rio Hondo.

The U.S. Department of Defense on May 8 confirmed that approximately 1,000 service members who have identified as having gender dysphoria will begin the voluntary separation process under new guidance that reinstates a ban on military service for those diagnosed with or exhibiting symptoms of gender dysphoria.

“Today, the Department will issue guidance to the Military Departments and Services ending the accession of individuals with a current diagnosis or history of, or symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria and all non-medically necessary treatment,” said Defense Department spokesman Sean Parnell. The new policy marks a significant shift in military personnel standards and reflects President Donald J. Trump’s directive issued earlier this year. "Approximately 1,000 Service members who have self-identified as being diagnosed with gender dysphoria will begin the voluntary separation process."

The decision comes days after the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6–3 vote, granted a stay of a lower court ruling that had blocked the policy. The majority did not issue an opinion, nor did the three dissenting justices. The stay allows the Department of Defense to enforce the new policy as litigation continues in a case brought by a group of transgender service members.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the move as necessary for maintaining military readiness and cohesion. “This is the president’s agenda, this is what the American people voted for, and we’re going to continue to relentlessly pursue it,” Hegseth said in a video statement. In a memorandum dated May 8, he wrote that “service by individuals with a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibiting symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria is not in the best interest of the Military Services and is not clearly consistent with the interests of national security.”

Under the new guidance, troops who self-identify by June 6 (active duty) or July 7 (reserves) will be eligible for voluntary separation and may receive separation pay. The deadline was extended from previous guidance by 30 and 60 days, respectively. Those seeking to remain in the military must obtain a waiver demonstrating that their continued service supports a compelling government interest and enhances warfighting capabilities. Among other requirements, waiver applicants must show they have not pursued gender transition and have demonstrated 36 consecutive months of psychological stability without significant distress.

Hegseth, speaking at a recent conservative conference in Florida, signaled a broader cultural shift within the military: “No more pronouns, no more climate change obsessions, no more emergency vaccine mandates, no more dudes in dresses,” he said.

Founded 54 years ago, Amtrak set out on a bold adventure to see if passenger trains could be profitable.

Fast forward to today, this experiment has been unsuccessful. Politicians have often crafted routes to win votes rather than attract riders.

As a result, Amtrak has been squandering taxpayer money since its start in 1971.

Take, for instance, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. It allocated a monumental $66 billion to bolster passenger rail. Yet, even with this backing, Amtrak’s losses soared from $1.12 billion in FY2019 to $2.12 billion in FY2024. This financial drain isn’t new; America’s passenger trains have lost money for 79 years.

Amtrak asserts that it is “on-track to reach operational profitability.”

Yet, this is a bald-faced lie.

While Amtrak reported a loss of $705.2 million for FY2024, it didn’t include:

$966.2 million in depreciation;

$447.3 million in “Project Related Expenses”;

$314.1 million in state subsidies, which it classified as “revenue”;

$26.9 million in Office of Inspector General funding

By omitting these costs, Amtrak paints an optimistic view of its financial health. In reality, Amtrak needs larger subsidies than ever before. In fact, Amtrak has been deceiving Congress with its “path to profitability” since 1990.

Although Amtrak touted a “ridership record” for FY2024, this figure is misleading too. Ridership numbers don’t reflect the average length of each passenger’s trip. A more insightful metric is passenger-miles, which measures how far people are traveling. In fact, Amtrak only transported 6.54 billion passenger-miles in FY2024. This is a decrease of 3.40 percent since FY2013.

Amtrak often attributes its financial struggles to its long-haul routes. Yet, the outlook is even bleaker for its short-haul, state-supported routes. Amtrak reported a $251.5 million loss for these routes in FY2024. Yet, with $314.1 million in state subsidies included, the true loss hits $565.6 million. This represents a shocking 94 percent increase from the $291.7 million lost in FY2019.

Amtrak’s advocates often cite highway “subsidies” to explain its financial debacles. But Amtrak guzzles about 39 times more subsidies per passenger-mile than highways do.

Amtrak asserts that freight trains “interfere” with its passenger services. However, Amtrak often makes questionable route choices despite having legal priority over freight. Between Chicago and Los Angeles, the Desert Wind lost less money than the Southwest Chief. Despite this, Amtrak favored the Southwest Chief, which passed through more congressional districts. It discontinued the Desert Wind in 1997, leaving Las Vegas with no train service.

Despite its competitor’s demise, the Southwest Chief still loses money. Its operating losses grew from $56.1 million in FY2019 to $83.3 million by FY2024. It also uses a lower-quality track than freight trains from Chicago to Los Angeles. Since 2014, taxpayers have spent over $45 million on track repairs for the Southwest Chief.

On February 27, 2023, 36 Attorneys General (AGs), wrote to Congress expressing their concerns with the Polaris Project, which has been the sole contractor operating the National Human Trafficking Hotline (NHTH) since 2007. This letter noted that Polaris, which is funded by taxpayer dollars, “is not reporting tips of adult trafficking to state law enforcement except under the limited circumstance where the victim self-reports and affirmatively consents to the Hotline making the report.” More recently, on April 15, 2025, 41 AGs sent you a letter regarding the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the grant to operate the NHTH. This letter raised multiple concerns about Polaris’s operation of the hotline. Specifically, the AGs stated that Polaris was “no longer sharing tips from concerned citizens and distressed family members with local law enforcement.” These alleged failures by Polaris to report instances of human trafficking are deeply concerning and, if they are accurate, changes to the operation of the NHTH must be made.

Additionally, according to reports, Katherine Chon, the co-founder of Polaris, is a “senior adviser at [the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)] and its director of the Office on Trafficking in Persons [OTIP],” the office awarding the grant. Given the importance of the NHTH, you must not allow conflicts of interest to affect the contracting process.

Legally protected whistleblower disclosures provided to my office appear to confirm the allegations that Polaris is not reporting instances of potential human trafficking to law enforcement. For example, according to an internal Polaris case file, in March 2025, an anonymous “signaler” contacted the NHTH and reported a “possible [sex trafficking (ST)] situation.” Polaris staff marked “Yes” for the case referencing potential minors and deemed the “Level of Trafficking Indicators” as having “High Indicators.” The case file also noted that the estimated age range of potential victims were “15-17; 18-21; 22+,” and that the potential victim indicated to the signaler she wanted police involvement. The case file further indicates that, according to the signaler, the potential victim is afraid “[s]he’s going to be physically hurt by the pimp running this company. She’s being forced to escort for sex and money.”

President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is on a mission to “fix” the despised start/stop technology in newer cars that shuts down a vehicle’s engine when stopped in traffic or at a red light in the name of conserving fuel and saving the planet.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said on Monday that his agency would begin looking into how it can modify the start/stop feature. The EPA currently incentivizes car manufacturers to make cars with the start/stop system. The technology can give vehicles anywhere between a 3% to 10% fuel economy boost.

“Start/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy. EPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it,” Zeldin wrote on X.

Zeldin did not elaborate on specific plans to change the feature.

Start/stop technology was first used by European car manufacturers on hybrids, but over the past decade, most automakers began implementing the system in many of their new vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks. By 2019, however, more automakers began giving drivers the option to shut off the start/stop system as people began to complain. Buick first gave drivers that option with its 2019 Envision based on “customer feedback,” according to Car and Driver. Ford, GM, Volvo, and Lincoln also began including the shut-off option in their start/stop vehicles between 2017 and 2018.

While most cars with start/stop technology allow drivers to deactivate the system, they can’t turn it off permanently, and owners of start/stop cars who don’t want to use the tech still have to turn it off every time they get back in the car. The EPA’s fuel-economy test results for vehicles with the start/stop system are affected if drivers turn the system off. According to Car and Driver, “If a vehicle’s stop/start system can be permanently turned off, then the vehicle’s fuel economy is tested both when stop/start is active and when it’s off. The EPA then averages the two tests for a resulting fuel-economy rating found on the car’s window sticker—which is certain to be lower.”

The response to Zeldin’s announcement was overwhelmingly positive on social media, with many people calling the objective “common sense.”

Saliva test can now detect cancer

A few drops of saliva can now reveal what used to require a scalpel, a syringe or a scan. Scientists have developed ways to analyze spit for the tiniest traces of illness – from mouth cancer to diabetes, and even brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Unlike blood tests or biopsies, saliva is easy to collect, painless and inexpensive. During the COVID pandemic, some countries used saliva-based testing for rapid screening.

This isn’t entirely new. Scientists first noticed the diagnostic potential of spit decades ago. In the 1980s, researchers used saliva to detect hormones and drug use. By the 1990s, it was being explored as a way to detect HIV.

What’s new is the speed and precision. Today’s techniques can detect subtle molecular shifts that would have been impossible to measure just a few years ago.

Saliva holds a surprising amount of information. It’s full of tiny fragments of DNA, RNA, proteins and fats – many of which change when disease takes hold. Researchers have already shown that saliva can be used to detect changes linked to diabetes, Parkinson’s, heart disease and some cancers.

A recent study even showed saliva could help distinguish between healthy people and those with mild cognitive impairment, a possible early sign of Alzheimer’s.

In dentistry, spit science is being studied for early signs of gum disease and even the risk of tooth decay.

A light-based technique called Raman spectroscopy is one of the latest tools being used to scan saliva for hidden chemical changes. It works by bouncing harmless light off molecules in a spit sample and reading the pattern it sends back – a kind of fingerprint for what’s happening inside your body.

It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is already being used in labs to detect early signs of cancer and other diseases often before symptoms appear.

This could be a gamechanger for oral cancer, which often starts with small, painless changes inside the mouth that are easy to miss. Early detection is vital, but many people don’t realise they have a problem until it’s much harder to treat.

A simple spit test during a regular dental check-up could help find cancer early, before it spreads.

It’s not just about cancer, either. Saliva is being trialled as a tool to monitor everything from stress levels to infections.

What makes saliva so appealing is its simplicity – no needles, no specialist clinics. Samples can often be collected at home, posted to a lab and analysed within hours. This could make a huge difference in places with limited access to healthcare or for people who avoid doctors out of fear, cost or time.

Of course, not every disease leaves a clear marker in spit and researchers are still working out which conditions saliva can reliably detect. But the idea of using what’s already naturally produced by the body to give an early warning is a powerful one. It could help catch disease when it’s most treatable, save lives and make healthcare faster, cheaper and more comfortable for everyone.

There’s still work to be done before spit tests become part of routine check-ups. Larger clinical trials are needed and researchers are still fine tuning the best ways to analyse and interpret the data. But the direction of travel is clear: the days of saliva being seen as just drool are over.

Saliva may not seem glamorous, but thanks to the rise of spit science, it’s fast becoming one of the most promising tools in the fight against disease. A future where your dentist, doctor, or even you could spot health problems early with nothing more than simple spit.

Senator Tom Cotton's legislation seeks to "prevent advanced American chips from falling into the hands of adversaries like Communist China."

Last week, a U.S. congressman announced a plan to introduce a bill that would mandate producers of high-performance AI processors to track them geographically in a bid to limit their usage by unauthorized foreign actors, such as China. Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas then introduced a legislative measure later in the week. The bill covers hardware that goes way beyond just AI processors, and would give the Commerce Secretary power to verify the location of hardware, and put mandatory location controls on commercial companies. To make matters even more complicated, geo-tracking features would be required for high-performance graphics cards as well.

The bill covers a wide range of products classified as 3A090, 4A090, 4A003.z, and 3A001.z export control classification numbers (ECCNs), so advanced processors for AI, AI servers (including rack-scale solutions), HPC servers, and general-purpose electronics of strategic concern due to potential military utility or dual-use risk. It should be noted that many high-end graphics cards (such as Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 5090) are also classified as a 3A090 product, so it looks like such add-in-boards will also have to add geo-tracking capabilities.

The first and central provision of the bill is the requirement for tracking technology to be embedded in any high-end processor module or device that falls under the U.S. export restrictions. This condition would take effect six months after the legislation is enacted, which will make the lives of companies like AMD, Intel, and Nvidia harder, as adding a feature to already developed products is a tough task. The mechanism must allow verification of a chip's or device's physical location, enabling the U.S. government to confirm whether it remains at the approved endpoint. Yet, exporters would be obliged to keep track of their products.

The bill authorizes the Secretary of Commerce to verify the ownership and location of regulated processors and systems after export and maintain a centralized registry of current locations and end-users. Nvidia, as well as other exporters, would also be obligated to inform the Bureau of Industry and Security if there is evidence that a component has been redirected from its authorized destination. Additionally, any indications of tampering or manipulation must be reported.

The bill, if supported by lawmakers, will mandate a one-year study to be conducted jointly by the Department of Commerce and the Department of Defense, which will identify additional protective measures that could be introduced in the future. Beyond the initial study, the same two departments are required to conduct yearly assessments for three consecutive years following the bill's enactment. These reviews must evaluate the most current advancements in security technologies applicable to products under export control. Based on these assessments, the departments may determine whether new requirements should be imposed.

If the assessment concludes that additional mechanisms are appropriate, the Commerce Department must finalize rules within two years requiring covered chips and systems to incorporate these secondary features. A detailed implementation roadmap must also be submitted to the relevant congressional committees. All development and deployment of these mechanisms must preserve the confidentiality of sensitive commercial technologies.

Finally, the legislation emphasizes confidentiality in all stages of developing and applying these new technical requirements. Any proposed safeguards or tracking features must be designed and implemented in a way that protects the proprietary information and trade secrets of American developers, such as AMD, Intel, and Nvidia. This condition ensures that while national security is strengthened, industrial competitiveness is not undermined.

Also, the senator takes into account the lengthy development cycle of AI and HPC processors. While the goal is to tighten security (which is why chip developers will be obliged to add location tracking to their products six months after the bill's enactment), the structure of the bill deliberately stretches out decision-making and compliance timelines to accommodate industry realities. The call for gradual adoption of future safeguards acknowledges the slow pace of chip development cycles, meaning that full compliance could take years depending on what mechanisms are eventually required. Meanwhile, annual export control reform recommendations may introduce further changes or exceptions over time, adding to the complexity.

Staff members at the Library of Congress denied access on Monday to two Justice Department officials who had been tapped for top positions there as part of a shake-up initiated by President Trump, according to two people familiar with the situation. The lockout led to a brief standoff on Capitol Hill.

The episode at the library, an agency of the legislative branch, became the latest tension point in a battle over where Congress’s authority ends and the White House’s begins. The people who described it did so on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment.

It unfolded after Mr. Trump on Monday named Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, who was the lead defense lawyer in his criminal trial in Manhattan last year, to be librarian of Congress, succeeding Carla Hayden, whom Mr. Trump abruptly fired last week. The library’s staff is recognizing Robert Newlen, the principal deputy librarian who was Ms. Hayden’s No. 2, as acting librarian until they get direction from Congress, one of the people familiar with the situation said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Capitol Police said that officers “did not escort anyone out” and that Library of Congress personnel did not ask them to “turn anyone away.”

Representative Joe Morelle of New York, the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration and a member of the Joint Committee on the Library, said the move to fire Ms. Perlmutter and Ms. Hayden amounted to a power grab by the executive branch and criticized Republicans for not speaking out against the overreach.

“This action once again tramples on Congress’s Article One authority and throws a trillion-dollar industry into chaos,” Mr. Morelle said in a statement after Ms. Perlmutter was fired from the Copyright Office, referring to Article One of the Constitution, which describes the powers of Congress. “When will my Republican colleagues decide enough is enough?”

Mr. Morelle led five other House Democrats in calling for an investigation into whether the library had given the Department of Government Efficiency or other executive branch agencies unauthorized access to congressional or library data.

FRENCH actor Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women by a Paris court.

The disgraced movie legend, 76, has been convicted of groping the women during filming of the 2021 film Les Volets Verts.

The victims were a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant for the movie which was filmed during 2021.

Both women said they had been scared to speak out at the time and had been intimidated by the actor.

His victims said he would use obscene and explicit language towards them before sexually assaulting them.

One, named only as Amélie, said the actor had trapped her between his legs and ran his hands over her body.

"He terrified me - he looked like a madman," she said.

She said he grabbed her hips then started palpating her behind and in front, around.

To show what she had experienced, she ran her hands near her buttocks, hips and pubic area.

She told the court that the actor's attitude during the trial bore no resemblance to his behaviour at work.

The other plaintiff said Depardieu groped her during three separate incidents on the film set.

Depardieu rejected the accusations during the four-day trial in March.

He acknowledged that he had used vulgar and sexualised language on set and that he grabbed the set dresser's hips during an argument.

However, he denied that his behaviour was sexual.

The case was seen as a major post-#MeToo test in France.

During the trial, Depardieu admitted that he had initially denied ever touching her - before then saying he grabbed her hips to stop himself from falling over, and then that he had done so to get her attention.

She described his account as "obviously completely false" - and added that she was mentally scarred by the incident.

Carine Diebolt, the lawyer representing one victim, told the court the actor had targeted women who did not have a high profile.

"He is strong with the weak, and weak with the strong," she said.

Diebolt told Sky News: "These women were put in danger.

"This is about a line of offences that he committed over many years that were tolerated by the world of cinema because it was Gérard Depardieu.

"Because the financial benefits he brings to the industry are so substantial.

"He did make some excellent films, but all men are equal before the law."

Depardieu, who has appeared in more than 200 movies, has been accused of misconduct by more than 20 women.

Some other cases were dropped due to lack of evidence or the statute of limitations.

This trial was widely seen as a landmark moment for the French film industry in seeing victims of abuses' claims taken seriously.

A French parliamentary report found last month that sexual violence and sexual harassment are "endemic" in the country's entertainment industry.

Emmanuelle Dancourt, president of MeToo Media, told Sky News: "Depardieu is a man with a lot of money around him.

"Everybody could see Depardieu talking badly to women, putting his hand in the wrong place on a woman's body and saying things that are wrong.

"But Gerard Depardieu's best friend is silence.

"In France, you have a wall of silence, and this means impunity. If you are a man with a lot of power and a lot of money, you can do whatever you want."

Everyone knows that Justice Sotomayor is one of the liberal justices on the nation’s highest court, but Supreme Court justices traditionally have tried to at least appear as if they’re above partisan politics.

This comes just as Chief Justice Roberts made some questionable comments of his own.

“Our job is to stand up for people who can’t do it themselves. And our job is to be the champion of lost causes,” she said. “But right now, we can’t lose the battles we are facing. And we need trained and passionate and committed lawyers to fight this fight.” Sotomayor didn’t mention the president as she spoke at an event in the nation’s capital hosted by a section of the American Bar Association, which has also been targeted by Trump.

The liberal justice’s remarks come a day after conservative Chief Justice John Roberts defended judicial independence as necessary to “check the excesses of the Congress or the executive” at an appearance in Buffalo, New York.

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley commented on this: The “we” left many surprised and concerned that the jurist was rallying the left as a type of constituency. She declared “We need trained and passionate and committed lawyers to fight this fight. For me, being here with you is an act of solidarity.”

Clearly, such comments are subject to different interpretations. Newspapers like the New York Times made the obvious connection, stating that it was made “against the backdrop of immense stress on lawyers and the legal system from the Trump administration.”

The message was not lost on activists who heralded “Justice Sotomayor’s support for the aggressive pro-democracy movement is so important at this critical time.” Court-sanctioned lawyer and Democratic activist Marc Elias added, “She understands that while we must bring difficult cases and be willing to lose, we must always fight to win. And by lending her voice in ‘solidarity,’ she affirmed that it is ‘our time to stand up and be heard.’”

President Donald Trump's administration has requested the Supreme Court's permission to deport nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants detained in Texas, asking the court to lift the injunction it issued last month that temporarily blocked the deportation of the migrants under the Alien Enemies Act.

In a filing on Monday, the Trump administration said that the 176 alleged members of Tren de Aragua "have proven to be especially dangerous to maintain in prolonged detention."

According to a sworn declaration, an official for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that a group of 23 migrants "threatened to take hostages and injure facility contract staff and ICE officers."

In the declaration, Johnson said the group of migrants were moved from Bluebonnet Detention Facility to Prairieland Detention Center last week.

On 11 November 1992, Jeff Steinberg, the counter-intelligence editor for Lyndon LaRouche’s Executive Intelligence Review (“EIR”), interviewed Colonel Fletcher Prouty (Ret.). He was a distinguished career military officer, historian, author and expert on the international railroad industry. His books include ‘The Secret Team’ (1973) and ‘JFK, the CIA, and the Plot’(1992). Col. Prouty died in 2001.

Republishing the 1992 interview with Col. Prouty in 2013, LaRouche commented: “This 1992 interview has excellent insights into the ongoing fight against oligarchy that we are involved in. Colonel Prouty gives us a look at the inner workings of the US intelligence community from the inside. What does our Milky Way Galaxy look like from the top? Because we are on the inside, humanity can’t get an actual picture. Recently, however, just such a map has been made using location data for over a billion stars from ESA’s Gaia mission. The resulting featured illustration shows that just like many other spiral galaxies, our Milky Way has distinct spiral arms. Our Sun and most of the bright stars we see at night are in just one arm: Orion. Gaia data bolsters previous indications that our Milky Way has more than two spiral arms. Our Galaxy's center sports a prominent bar. The colors of our Galaxy's thin disk derive mostly from dark dust, bright blue stars, and red emission nebula. Although data analysis is ongoing, Gaia was deactivated in March after a succession mission.
