Dengue Fever spikes in vacation hotspots

Spring breakers are being warned over a fast-spreading disease that could be life-threatening.

In an emergency notice, the CDC raised the alarm over dengue fever — saying the US and Americas region is seeing high transmission, with nearly 1,000 cases reported across 21 states already this year.

A record number of infected travelers - nearly 4,000 - returned to the US in 2024.

And just as the spring travel season kicks off, popular destinations like the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Mexico, are experiencing high transmission of the illness, with Mexico recording 20,000 cases already this year.

The disease is spread when infected mosquitoes bite people, and it causes fever, headache and rash in most cases.

In severe cases, the disease develops into dengue shock syndrome, which can trigger heavy bleeding from the nose, gums or under the skin and pain behind the eyes.

It is rare for dengue to turn into a severe disease, but when it does about one in 100 patients do not survive. This rises to 20 percent if someone does not get treatment.

There's no specific medicine for dengue fever, with treatment instead relying on keeping patients hydrated and relieving pain.

The CDC issued a warning to avoid mosquito bites, such as wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing and told doctors to be 'suspicious' for the virus in patients who had recently returned from abroad and were suffering from a high fever.

In the emergency notice, officials said: 'Dengue virus transmission remains high in the Americas region, including in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

'Spring and summer travel coincide with the peak season for dengue in many countries, increasing the risk of both travel-associated and locally acquired cases in the United States.'

About 173million Americans travel for spring break in March and April.

In Puerto Rico, infections have surged this year compared to the same period last year — with 861 cases already recorded.

In the US Virgin Islands, 30 people have already tested positive for the disease.

Across the US, 985 cases of dengue fever have been reported in 24 states and jurisdictions.

And there have been 97 cases reported in the continental US associated with travel.

Florida has reported the most cases at 42, followed by California with 10 cases and New York with six cases.

It was not clear where the infected travelers had returned to the US from.

The CDC said in its alert: 'This trend is expected to continue with increased dengue activity in endemic areas in 2025.'

Experts say dengue cases are rising due to the El Niño phenomenon — which leads to unusually hot sea surface temperatures causing more rainfall and a longer mosquito breeding season in the Americas.

Climate change leading to longer periods of warmer weather is also thought to be driving the increase in cases and allowing mosquitoes to spread to new areas.

Officials warn approximately just one in four dengue patients are symptomatic, with their infection diagnosed via a PCR test.

The virus is particularly dangerous for infants under one year old, pregnant women and adults over 65 years old.

Worldwide, there were 13million cases reported in 2024, nearly three times the tally for 2023, and 8,200 deaths, up 240 percent over the previous 12 months.

As of March 6 this year, there were 760,000 dengue cases globally — a 15 percent increase compared to the five-year average.

Musk-hating hackers release names and addresses of every Tesla owner in the US

Elon Musk-hating hackers have doxxed Tesla owners in the United States, releasing an interactive map showing their names, addresses, phone numbers and emails.

The disturbing website, called DOGEQUEST, also provides the locations of every Tesla showroom, charging station and the known residences of Department of Government Efficiency employees.

It even lists FBI Director Kash Patel's home and uses a symbol of a Molotov cocktail as its cursor.

The site's operators said they will only remove identifying information about Tesla drivers if they provide proof that they sold their electric vehicle amid a national boycott of the car maker.

It is unclear where the hacker got the information about the Tesla owners, but it has caused a lot of concern - with Musk labeling it 'extreme domestic terrorism.'

'Encouraging destruction of Teslas throughout the country is extreme domestic terrorism!!' he wrote on X Tuesday night.

The website says it 'neither endorses nor condemns any actions.'

'If you're on the hunt for a Tesla to unleash your artistic flair with a spray can, just step outside - no map needed,' it reads. 'At DOGEQUEST, we believe in empowering creative expressions of protest that you can execute from the comfort of your own home'

Under the heading 'I want my information removed,' the website says 'Absolutely! Just provide us with proof that you've sold your Tesla.'

It also links to a website called the No Trace Project, which says it is 'a collection of tools to help anarchists and other rebels understand the capabilities of their enemies, undermine surveillance efforts and ultimately act without getting caught.'

Some online have called for FBI Director Patel to act to take down the website and go after the cyber group behind it after President Donald Trump declared anyone enacting violence against Teslas and its dealerships would be labeled 'domestic terrorists.'

The president's remarks last week came amid fiery mass protests at showrooms across the world as leftists hit out at Musk for his efforts to slash government spending.

Last weekend, roughly 250 activists gathered outside a showroom in New York City, holding anti-Musk placards that read 'Block Fascism Now and 'Musk Must Go' as they shouted 'Elon Musk is not elected! Democracy must be protected!'

Five protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct at the Manhattan demonstration and one was taken into custody for resisting arrest, obstruction and violation of local law, The New York Daily News reported.

There have also been more than a dozen acts of vandalism against Tesla vehicles, dealerships and charging stations since Donald Trump's inauguration, according to police and local reports.

In one instance, a New York City man said he watched as a man jumped out of his Subaru and defaced his Cybertruck with a swastika.

On Tuesday, an arsonist even used Molotov cocktails to fire bomb five Teslas before firing rounds into the burning vehicles at a dealership in Las Vegas.

Police said the unknown suspect, who was seen at the scene in all black, managed to completely burn out two of the cars while damaging three others.

Video from the incident shows large sparks flying from the hood of one of the vehicles, as strong flames and thick black smoke consume the vehicles.

Officers in Sin City also said that the word 'resist' had been painted on the door of the facility, with three gunshots also fired into the vehicles.

Those conducting the vandalism - as well as those who are more peacefully demonstrating at the dealerships - are hitting out at Musk for his efforts to fire thousands of federal workers, including veterans, in his plan to downsize the government.

Those efforts are also being targeted by federal judges - one of whom ordered the Trump administration to stop dismantling USAID.

Maryland District Judge Theodore Chuang granted a preliminary injunction on Tuesday to block the administration from closing the agency, ruling that DOGE's effort to shut it down likely violated the US Constitution.

He also ordered it be partially restored including some computer systems be reinstated and the agency be able to reoccupy its headquarters in Washington, DC.

US District Judge William Alsup, a Bill Clinton nominee, also previously required that the Trump administration rehire thousands of fired 'probationary' employees.

Amid the backlash, Tesla's shares plummeted 53 percent since reaching a record high in December and its market value plunged by more than $800 billion during the same time period, according to Business Insider.

Four top executives at the company have even sold more than $100 million worth of shares since early February, ABC News reported on Tuesday.

As the company continues to spiral, Ross Gerber - one of Tesla's early investors - called on Musk to step down as the head of the company.

'I think Tesla needs a new CEO and I decided today I was going to start saying it, and so this is the first show that I'm saying it on,' Gerber told host Darren McCaffrey on Sky's Business Live on Tuesday.

'It's time for somebody to run Tesla,' he continued, arguing that Musk has stretched himself too thin across his work at DOGE and at X.

'There are too many important things Tesla's doing, so either Elon should come back to Tesla and be the CEO of Tesla and give up his other jobs, or he should focus on the government and keep doing what he is doing, but find a suitable CEO of Tesla.'

He went on to say the DOGE chief 'destroyed' the electric vehicle maker's reputation due to his work in the federal government.

'The company's reputation has just been destroyed by Elon Musk,' he argued. 'Sales are plummeting, so yeah, it's a crisis.

'You literally can't sell the best product in the marketplace because the CEO is so divisive.'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Amid a tense political climate, a Canadian airline says it is canceling flights between Canada and a Tennessee city already targeted by the country’s tariffs.

In response to tariffs enacted by President Trump, Canadians have made their opinion of the U.S. clear, booing the country’s national anthem at NHL and NBA games and removing American-made goods — including Tennessee whiskey — from their store shelves.

Recent reports show Canadians are also avoiding any trips to the U.S. According to the Canadian Press, they have been canceling travel plans. Data from travel agency Flight Centre Travel Group Canada showed leisure bookings to U.S. cities dropped 40 percent in February over last February, with one in five customers canceling U.S. trips over the previous three months.

Canadian airlines have taken note. One in particular, Flair Airlines, recently announced it would end flights to Nashville.

“I can confirm that Flair won’t be flying to Nashville this summer,” said Kim Bowie, director of communications for Flair Airlines. According to Flair’s website, the airline’s flights to Nashville are its only route to Tennessee.

During a Monday meeting of the Tennessee House Finance, Ways and Means Committee, Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Mark Ezell said it’s a loss of about 18,000 seats.

“We see travelers quickly react to political news and then we see that great marketing overcomes that traveler settlement,” said Ezell, who expressed concern about the cancelations but confidence that the challenge will be overcome because of Tennessee’s great assets.

“Do you really want to miss seeing the Smoky Mountains,” said Ezell. “Do you really want to miss getting to go to Graceland?”

Air Canada has also said it would reduce flights to Arizona, Florida, and Las Vegas starting this month, while WestJet told the Canadian Press that it had seen bookings shift from the U.S. to places like Mexico and the Caribbean. Sunwing Airlines has dropped all of its U.S. flights while Air Transat has reduced service to the country, the outlet reported.

Another Canadian airline, Porter Airlines, told the National Post it was pulling back on its advertising of American destinations because “some Canadians may view this negatively.”

Amid economic turmoil, high-profile plane crashes, and consumer uncertainty, major U.S. airlines like Delta, Southwest, and American Airlines have issued warnings about falling travel demand.

After an appeal to the public by the HSCA, Louie Steven Witt came forward in 1978 and claimed to be the "umbrella man".[6] He claimed to still have the umbrella and did not know he had been the subject of controversy. He said that he brought the umbrella simply to heckle Kennedy, whose father, Joseph, had been a supporter of the Nazi-appeasing British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Kennedy, who wrote a thesis on appeasement while at Harvard, Why England Slept, might have recognized the symbolism of the umbrella. Black umbrellas had been used in connection with protests against the President before. At the time of the construction of the Berlin Wall, a group of schoolchildren from Bonn sent the White House an umbrella labeled Chamberlain.[9]

Testifying before the HSCA, Witt said "I think if The Guinness Book of World Records had a category for people who were at the wrong place at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing, I would be No. 1 in that position, without even a close runner-up."[6][10]

Witt died on November 17, 2014.[11]

A former TVNZ presenter and doctor has had her medical registration cancelled and been ordered to pay more than $148,000 after posting Covid-19 misinformation to her YouTube channel which racked up around 18 million views.

While the Health Practitioner’s Disciplinary Tribunal (HPDT) issued Samantha Bailey with its ruling last year, the outcome of the years-long investigation into her conduct was only publicly released yesterday.

Christchurch’s Bailey, who was previously one of four presenters on the TVNZ health series The Checkup, posted videos to her channel commenting on the “mythology” of the vaccine’s efficacy while touting her medical and science education.

The vice chief of the U.S. Space Force said Chinese satellites have been observed rehearsing "dogfighting" maneuvers in low Earth orbit, a display of the communist nation's ability to perform complex maneuvers in orbit.

The maneuvers, referred to as rendezvous and proximity operations, involve not only navigating around other objects but also inspecting them, the Air Force Times reported Tuesday.

"With our commercial assets, we have observed five different objects in space maneuvering in and out and around each other in synchronicity and in control," Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. Michael Guetlein said Tuesday at the McAleese Defense Programs Conference in Washington, D.C.

"That's what we call dogfighting in space. They are practicing tactics, techniques, and procedures to do on-orbit space operations from one satellite to another."

A Space Force spokesperson told the Air Force Times the observation occurred in 2024 and involved three Shiyan-24C experimental satellites and two other Chinese experimental spacecraft, the Shijian-605 A and B. The Shijian-6 systems were believed to be on a signals intelligence mission, which could be used to determine the geolocation of a signal's origin, which helps in identifying the location and movements of adversaries, according to the American Military Institute.

Guetlein’s comments came as the Space Force intensifies efforts to establish dominance in space, both by defending its satellites from enemy attacks and through offensive measures of its own, according to the Air Force Times.

For reference, there are approximately three million federal civilian workers. Those of us in the private sector managed to not to firebomb the cars of federal employees, who are still collecting a cushy paycheck from home long after most of us went back to the actual office.

There is no victimization to be had here. Deficit spending is running at an alarmingly large percent of GDP, and this is resulting in exponential interest rate payments. DOGE is merely applying the same solution as every business in the private sector facing similar financial straits: layoffs for the sake of future financial sustainability.

I would propose it is YOUR moral compass that is broken, such that you prioritize a fraction of federal workers over the financial health of the entire nation. Particularly when contextualized that this is something quite normal which the private sector experiences day in-day out.

I thanked him for a good and productive start to the work of the Ukrainian and American teams in Jeddah on March 11—this meeting of the teams significantly helped in moving toward ending the war. We agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue working together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace. We believe that together with America, with President Trump, and under American leadership, lasting peace can be achieved this year.

President Trump shared details of his conversation with Putin and the key issues discussed. One of the first steps toward fully ending the war could be ending strikes on energy and other civilian infrastructure. I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it. Our teams discussed this step in Jeddah. The American side also proposed an unconditional ceasefire on the frontline, and Ukraine accepted this proposal as well. We will continue working to make this happen. We believe that such steps are necessary to create the possibility for a comprehensive peace agreement to be prepared during the ceasefire.

I also provided an update on the battlefield situation and the consequences of Russian strikes. We spoke about the situation in the Kursk region, touched on the issue of the release of POWs, and the return of Ukrainian children who were taken by Russian forces. We also discussed the state of Ukraine’s air defense and the possibility of strengthening it to protect lives.

We instructed our teams to resolve technical issues related to implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire. Ukrainian and American teams are ready to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to continue coordinating steps toward peace. We instructed our advisors and representatives to carry out this work as quickly as possible. We noted the positive work of our advisors and representatives—Rubio, Waltz, Kellogg, Yermak, Sybiha, Umerov, and Palisa. In further meetings, the teams can agree on all necessary aspects of advancing toward lasting peace and security guarantees.

I thanked President Trump and the American people for their support. I stressed that Ukrainians want peace, which is why Ukraine accepted the proposal for an unconditional ceasefire. I highlighted the importance of President Trump’s concept of peace through strength. We agreed to maintain constant contact, including at the highest level and through our teams.
