JFK & ONI

Navy Ensign John F. Kennedy was assigned to the ONI and was working as an ONI officer when he met his sister’s college roommate Inga Arvad of Denmark. As Miss Denmark 1931 Arvad attended the propaganda tinged 1936 Olympics in Berlin where she “charmed Adolph Hitler and his cohorts so much that she gained access to their inner circle, and was Hitler’s guest” at the Olympics.

As a 1940 student at the Columbia School of Journalism [which later received funding from the CIA front Catherwood Foundation], Arvad lived with JFK’s sister Kathleen when they both worked for the New York Times Herald. At the time JFK dated Arvad, she worked for the ubiquitous North American Newspaper Alliance (NANA), which also employed Ernest Hemingway when he liberated Paris with the OSS, Priscilla Johnson McMillan when she interviewed Oswald in Moscow and Virginia Prewett when she covered Alpha 66 operations in Cuba.

Kennedy and Arvad spent some time together in a Charleston, South Carolina hotel that was bugged by the FBI, and when Arvad’s background as a possible spy was established, Kennedy was transferred out of ONI to the PT boat squadron in the Pacific.

We do know that the ONI played a major role in the study of assassination and various ways, means and methods to accomplish it. At a NATO conference in Norway on the subject of stress in combat, U.S. Navy Lt. Commander (LCDR) Thomas Narut was quoted in the London Sunday Times as saying that such research is continuous, on going and operational.

According to Narut, “...combat readiness units…include men for commando-type operations and...for insertion into U.S. embassies under cover,…ready to kill in those countries should the need arise….U.S. Navy psychologists specially selected men for these commando tasks, from submarine crews, paratroops, and some were convicted murderers from military prisons...Research on those given awards for valor in battle [ie. Audie Murphy] has shown….that the best killers are men with ‘passive-aggressive’ personalities...Among the tests used is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. This consists of hundreds of questions, and rates personality on many traits including such things as hostility, depression, psychopathy...” The Times reported that, “The men selected were brought either to the Navy’s neuropsychiatric laboratory in San Diego, California (which also trains spys in techniques to counter interrogation), or to the laboratory where Narut works in the U.S. Naval Medical Center in Naples.”

OSWALD & ONI

Gerald Posner’s “Case Closed” (Random House, 1993), noted that when Oswald was tested by Dr. R. Hartog as a New York City delinquent, “Hartog’s diagnosis [of Oswald] was that of a ‘personality pattern disturbance….and passive-aggressive tendencies,” - just what the Navy psychs were looking for in potential assassins.

Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Lee Harvey Oswald joined the USMC as soon as he was legally of age, and was twice stationed in San Diego, California, home of the Navy’s “neuropsychiatric” lab where they taught counter-intelligence and interrogation resistance techniques.

Trained as a radar operator, Oswald was also stationed at Atsugi, Japan, where he occasionally stood guard duty at the U2 hanger. In 1956, Edwin P. Wilson was assigned to a sixty man detachment responsible for U2 security, which was based at North Las Vegas, Nevada, abut assigned overseas under cover of the Maritime Survey Associates, of 80 Boylston St., Boston, Mass. For some time Wilson served in Japan but he also was stationed at Adana, Turkey when Francis Gary Powers was flying out of there. Wilson would later, in 1971, serve in ONI’s Task Force 157, which was established by RA Rufus Taylor, who was director of ONI at the time of the assassination.

Oswald may have become involved in ONI counter-intelligence operations in Japan, (when DONI Rufus Taylor was also there) and where he is said to have been the target for recruitment by KGB assets. Although the Navy has refused to even admit that such a program existed, and some, like Otto Otepka of State Dept. Security, lost their jobs over it, there apparently was a Navy run defector program that included Oswald.

When Oswald left the USMC he returned to his hometown of New Orleans, from where he obtained, from a travel agency at the World Trade Mart, passage on a tramp steamer to Europe, the first leg of his journey to Russia. On his passport was stamped his occupation: “Import-Export Agent.”

In New Orleans at the same time, and the only time and place their careers and travels have thus far shown to overlap, Col. Jose Rivera, USAR was teaching at a local medical college. When Oswald was stationed at San Diego before his defection, although in the Army Reserves, Rivera was stationed at a Naval Research Center near San Francisco, California.

After Oswald defected, his honorable discharge was changed to “undesirable,” which infuriated him once he learned of it, and indeed, how could he be declared “undesirable” after he had already left the service. Another Catch-22.

Writing a letter to the Secretary of the Navy John Connally, Oswald compared his trip to Minsk was “like Hemingway went to Paris.” Now Priscilla Johnson McMillan, who knew Oswald in Moscow, wrote that Oswald compared his stay in Russia to when Hemingway went to Paris in the 1920s. But Oswald didn’t say the 1920s, when Hemingway lived there with the Lost Generation. He could have instead been referring to Hemingway’s liberation of Paris in 1944.

While working in liaison with the ONI in the Caribbean, Hemingway kept watch for Nazi subs and ships while fishing aboard his boat the Pilar, the fuel for which was supplied by the ONI. After D-Day however, Hemingway went to England, where his son was a British Special Operations trained JEDBERG. He was dropped behind the lines where he was captured and held prisoner until the war’s end. After D-Day, Hemingway obtained correspondent credentials and went to France, where he hooked up with an OSS contingent led by Col. David Bruce. Bruce would later become Hemingway’s best man and serve as John F. Kennedy’s ambassador to the Court of St. James (UK). After the fight for Paris was mainly over, Hemingway, Bruce and their commandos liberated the bar of the Ritz Hotel, which had been occupied by the German General command earlier that morning. Hemingway took a head count of his party and ordered sixty vodka martinis, shaken-not-stirred.

@POTUS

mentions an F-47 prototype has been flying secretly for 5 years. Wonder if moving to full-rate production will lower production demand for F-35 or if this is additive demand. Also, will there be a naval version?

Oswald’s letter to Connally that mentioned “Hemingway in Paris” was received by the new Secretary of the Navy, Fred Korth, a Fort Worth attorney who knew Oswald’s family. Korth had to resign as Navy Sec in the weeks before the assassination because he was entwined with the controversial TFX jet fighter contract negotiations with General Dynamics and the Continental National Bank of Fort Worth. Korth was also present at the Hotel Cortez meeting when JFK and LBJ hashed out the details of the Texas trip.

When Oswald returned to Texas with his Russian wife, he met George DeMohrenschildt, who became a close friend. One of the more bizarre incidents between Oswald and DeMohrenschildt is the story of how DeMohrenschildt tried to get Oswald a job at Collins Radio by introducing him to a Collins executive - retired US Navy Admiral Chester Bruton.

DeMohrenschildt came knocking at Bruton’s door saying that he knew the previous owners of the house, and using his well-honed charm, managed an invitation to use Bruton’s pool, and invited Marina to use it as well. One day, while Marina and DeMohrenschildt were lounging by the pool with Bruton, Oswald arrived unannounced and stayed for lunch. Oswald didn’t get along very well with the Admiral, an officer and “lifer” and needless to say, he didn’t get a job at Collins. DeMohrenschildt tried to sell him on the fact that after all, Oswald did work in a radio factory in Russia. But the Collins Radio connections would later multiply and require closer examination [See: The Collins Radio Connections http://jfkcountercoup.blogspot.com/2008/01/collins-radio-connections.html].

Bruton was a former nuclear submarine commander who was hired by Collins after he retired from the Navy. He was reportedly working on a new electronics system for communicating with nuclear submarines at sea. Operating under the code names “Binnacle” and “Holystone,” the ONI began using nuclear subs, not only for nuclear Polaris missile deterrent, but for electronic espionage. As mentioned in “Blind Man’s Bluff -- The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage” (By Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew, Harper, 1998), “Congress okayed these popular proposals and offered up funding that caught the attention of the Office of Naval Intelligence. The Navy might have been promising an era that mirrored Jules Verne, but a few submarine espionage specialists now saw the means to launch a new age of spying that would be much closer to James Bond.”

“In addition to these operations off the Soviet Coast, some diesel subs carried Russian émigrés back to the Soviet Union to spy for the United States, and other diesel subs were landing commandos in places like Borneo, Indonesia and the Middle East to track the expanding Soviet influence. [Shortly after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, Navy commandos used diesel submarines to engineer the escape of prominent Cubans from Castro’s regime. Over several weeks, commandos slipped from the subs and rowed to shore in inflatable rafts. The Cubans who were piloted back to the subs often had to dive 15 to 30 feet through dark waters to enter the submerged craft through special pressurized compartments. May of those rescued likely would have been jailed or executed for plotting to overthrow Castro, according to former U.S. sailors involved in the operation.”

“Couriers met returning submarines at the dock, ready to whisk the intelligence directly to NSA headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland,” so it is interesting that Oswald met and leafleted the crew when the USS Wasp put into port at New Orleans.

After the shooting of Gen. Edwin Walker Lee Harvey Oswald took a bus from Dallas, Texas to his hometown of New Orleans, where through the efforts of an old family friend, Mrs. Myrtle Evans, he obtained an apartment on Magazine Street and then got a job at the Riley Coffee Company.

Two weeks earlier, in Washington, D.C., Dr./Col. Jose Rivera, USAR, gave Adele Edisen Oswald’s New Orleans Magazine street phone number - that’s two weeks before Oswald himself knew where he would be living. At the time, Dr./Col. Rivera, although in the U.S. Army Reserves, was officially stationed at the U.S. Naval Biological Lab at the University of California, Berkeley.

The ONI offices in New Orleans were in the same building where Oswald kept his Post Office box, just across the street from 544 Camp Street, the central base of various nefarious operations run by Guy Bannister. Although his record does not indicate he ever served in the Navy, Bannister is said to have worked with the FBI in New York when they were working with the Mafia in liaison with the ONI.

Bannister did have a friend, Guy Persac Johnson, served in ONI in the Pacific and later became Jim Garrison’s law partner and for awhile, Clay Shaw’s attorney. Guy P. Johnson was alleged to have a copy of the elusive “Homme Report” that ostensibly proves that RFK had a contract out to kill Castro.

Garrison mentions in a footnote to On The Trail of the Assassins, that the Louisiana State Police found a book in Guy Bannister's office on Naval Intelligence, by Admiral Ellis Zacharias.

One of Zacharias' literary collaborators was Ladislas Farago, who wrote a series of articles in 1963 on the woeful state of U.S. anti-submarine warfare preparation. He said they were lacking Congressional backing which hampered weapon research and the improving of technology and that the cautious spending would also result in mechanical deficiencies. About two months after Farago's material was published, the Thresher went down.

From New Orleans, Lee Harvey Oswald returned to Texas, via Mexico City around the same time that three men visited Sylvia Odio and her sister, one of whom was “Leon Oswald, an ex-Marine who could kill anyone, like the Secretary of the Navy.”

Around the same time, Edward Bray was visited by three men in suits who claimed to represent JFCOTT -- Justice for the Crew of The Thresher, the nuclear sub that went down with all hands, ostensibly because of faulty hardware made by the Bendix corporation, for whom Bray worked. Like Odio’s visitors the JFCOTT visiters to Bray also threatened the President and Governor Connally, the former Secretary of the Navy. Bray even wrote to Connally to warn him of the threats. After the assassination, some people, like James Reston, Jr., son of the NY Times reporter, speculated that Oswald actually intended to shoot Connally rather than Kennedy.

In his book “Reasonable Doubt” Henry Hurt attributes some shady “bagman” activities in New Orleans to an unnamed former Navy man and Notre Dame alumni, while former D.A. Jim Garrison recalled being approached and threatened about his investigation into the Kennedy assassination and by Colorado oilman John Miller, who had attended the U.S. Naval Academy.

A number of Oswald’s former USMC shipmates return to action in the drama, including G.P. Hemming in San Diego, Kerry Thornley and A. Hiedell in New Orleans and Roscoe White in Dallas. Roscoe White, who sailed to Japan with Oswld, and later worked for the Dallas Police Department, allegedly worked under cover for ONI. According to documents obtained by his son, he received ONI typed orders:

While this document has been questioned by some, it is very similar to two other documents that I have confirmed were official ONI documents, without a logo or official masthead, and a former Navy officer named C. Bowers was located living in New Orleans.

Two days after the assassination Det. Paul Bently of the Dallas Police Department received a letter from Robert D. Steel, Commander, USNR-R, of 7960 June Lake Drive, San Diego, California. Steel wrote Bently, “Perhaps you are aware that ONI has quite a file on Oswald, which no doubt has been made available on the Washington level. If not, I am certain that this information can be obtained for you through our resident special agent in charge of the Dallas office, A. C. Sullivan, who is a wonderful agent, and whom I hope you know. As a personal friend, I congratulate you, wish you continued success, and pray that your guardian angel will remain close at hand and vigilant, always.”

Paul Bentley was the chief operator of the department's polygraph unit. He and Allan Sweatt headed up the Texas Association of Polygraph Examiners. Bentley was of Oswald's arresting officers, had searched Oswald's wallet on way back to station and in his report stated, "On the way to City Hall, I removed the subject's wallet and obtained his name." No mention of "Hidell whatsoever. Ditto the other four cops in the car, who never called to testify by Warren Commission.

As for A. C. Sullivan, his full name is Arthur Carroll Sullivan, Jr. , who was in ONI 27 years, and also worked for the FBI and as an investigator for the Dallas DA.

During its investigation the HSCA learned from a former officer that the USMC sent a special investigations team to San Diego and Japan. According to an officer who flew on the same plane, they wrote a report on Oswald’s activities when he was there. The USMC investigators reportedly concluded that Oswald was incapable of committing the assassination alone. But that report has never been acknowledged let alone released, even though the officials were supplied with the plane’s tail numbers, flight data and the names of others aboard. The Assassination Records Review Board’s Final Report merely notes that, “the Marine Corps did not locate evidence of any internal investigations of Lee Harvey Oswald, other than correspondence already published in the Warren Report.”

Oswald had used A. Hidel and J. Evans as references on a document, and in the same page of the Warren Report they deny that either person exists, yet acknowledge that Oswald served with a Heindell in the USMC who lived in New Orleans at the time. And there was a Hidel bartender in Baton Rouge who knew the McCurley brothers, two of the guys who helped Oswald hand out FPCC literature. Then there was Julian - J. Evans, the husband of the women who knew the Oswald family for many years and helped Oswald find the Magazine St. apartment.

At 1:30 a.m. on 11/24/63, Mr David Kerr Office of Naval Intelligence, contacted SAIC Rice (New Orleans) by telephone, advising that a thorough search had been made of the Marine Corps records with the following results: There are four persons on active duty by the name of J. Evans, and twelve on inactive duty . . . He said that there was only one officer, Lieutenant John Stewart Evans . . . who might be associated with Oswald's reference. He further advised that there is no record of a "Hidell" either on active duty or inactive; and that the only similar name is John R. Heindel, age thirty-eight, born in Louisiana, who is not active, his record being available at the Federal Records Center, St. Louis. CE.” Heindel had served with Oswald in the Marines.

Adele Edisen had called New Orleans Secret Service SAIC Rice before the assassination to warn him about the threats Col. Jose Rivera had made against the President, and called again afterwards. She was interviewed by Rice and FBI liaison to the Secret Service Orrin Bartlett, but no records of this interview are known to exist.

Lamar Waldron and Tom Hartmann (in Ultimate Sacrifice/Legacy of Secrecy) have numerous confidential sources, one of whom they identify as a former ONI officer. (Ultimate Sacrifice p. 164)

"...Our confidential Naval Intelligence source - who had helped to compile the reports resulting from the 'tight surveillance' of Oswald since his return to this US from Russia - said that 'on the day of the assassination,' he and a coworker 'were called back to their office in Washington.' After receiving the orders from their commander, they 'destroyed and sanitized lots of the Oswald file.' Confirmation for such document destruction comes from FBI memos, which describe their own interviews with Marines who had served with Oswald. However, the FBI agents discovered that some of the Marines had earlier been interviewed by Navy Intelligence - but those Naval Intelligence reports are all missing, leading an FBI agent to say in a memo, 'Perhaps they have been destroyed.'"

The Naval Intelligence file our source handled in the fall of 1963 concerned only the close surveillance of Oswald, not any operational duties Oswald might have had. Those were apparently being handled by, or coordinated with, the CIA. Our source said there was 'a note on the top of the file jacket [that] said to contact the CIA if Oswald was arrested or got into trouble. There was a name and some sort of code given for someone at the CIA.' 43. The one person at the CIA who is alleged to have been in contact with Oswald is David Atlee Phillip. In his later autobiographical novel outline, Phillips wrote that Oswald was part of the effort to assassinate Castro and had 'used [against JFK] precisely the plan we had devised against Castro."

"Naval Intelligence and its close counterpart, Marine Intelligence (G-2) were components of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) headed by General Joseph Carroll. A journalist told former Senate investigator Bernard Fensterwald that 'Oswald had connections to an 'intelligence service...called the Defense Intelligence Agency...The General who...supposedly made the arrangements [was] General Joe Carroll, founder of the DIA...The Arm was going nuts over Oswald's part in the assassination.' Army Intelligence destroyed its entire Oswald file in 1973."

Among the ONI records requested by the ARRB, and located in ONI files by LCDR T. Pike were ONI records on American defectors to Communist block countries. Among those records should be files on Oswald and two NSA code clerks who had been based at Fort Meade defected to Russia. Before their joining the ranks of NSA Vernon F. Mitchell and William H. Martin served together in the Navy. Just after their defections, NSA Director Lt. Gen. John Samford retired citing health problems. He was replaced by the then Director of Naval Intelligence, Laurence Frost.

But those ONI defector records were never turned over to the ARRB.

It is also interesting to note that in the course of their defections Mitchell and Martin traveled to New Orleans and then on to Mexico and to Cuba where they boarded a Soviet fishing boat out of Havana, all familiar locations to assassination researchers.

In his Washington Post article on the dissolution of the ARRB, George Lardner, Jr. wrote a story headlined “JFK Assassination Board Closes on Critical Note.” (September 29, 1998)

“The Assassination Records Review Board, created out of a broad public conviction that the government was hiding important information, winds up its work this week after collecting and releasing thousands of previously secret records about President John F. Kennedy's murder - and concluding that aggressive efforts are needed to pursue still more.”

“Required by law to close its doors Sept. 30, the small but independent agency said in a final 236-page report that its aggressive efforts frequently paid off, but that it is still worried that "critical records may have been withheld" from its scrutiny. The agency said it did not secure "all that was 'out there.’ The board also scolded the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board for insisting that ‘unique information’ in its files was not ‘assassination-related’ and demanding an ‘unnecessary [and] burdensome’ document-by-document justification.”

“The Kennedy presidential library in Boston was ranked as a disappointment for delays in sought-after papers from Robert F. Kennedy's files, even though they contain ‘a wealth of Cuba material,’ wrote Lardner, especially noting that, “The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) was described as a puzzle, if not a black hole.”

“Oswald was a Marine before he defected to the Soviet Union and the board said a former naval intelligence specialist recalled how ONI conducted a post-defection investigation that produced at least a dozen reports about Oswald that crossed his desk. The specialist, Frank Reeves, said ‘the primary concern of the reports he read on Oswald was to ascertain what damage had been done to the national security by Oswald's defection.’ The board said it was unable to locate any such documents. Apparently the only ONI document on Oswald that the board mentioned was a Sept. 21, 1964, affidavit in the files of then-ONI Director Rufus Taylor, declaring that ONI ‘never utilized Lee Harvey Oswald as an agent or an informant.’”

But according to ARRB records, their official contact with ONI had reported to them that she had located defector records, reviewed them page by page and placed them in a special box marked for the ARRB, but the ONI officer was replaced, reprimanded and the records never released to the Review Board.

When the CIA director Richard Helms was asked by the HSCA about their interests in Oswald after his defection, Helms said that, “It would have been considered a Navy matter,” and recommended they talk to Rufus Taylor, who just happened to have died two weeks previous.

In the Final Report of the Assassinations Records Review Board it is noted “for the record” that ONI couldn’t locate any dcouments whatsoever of Admiral Taylor when he was director and that: “ONI stated that it conducted an extensive review of ONI records held at the Federal Records Centers throughout the country. ONI did not identify any additional assassination records. ONI was unable to find any relevant files for the Director of ONI from 1959 to 1964. ONI also acknowledged that there were additional ONI records that were not reviewed for assassination records, but these records would be reviewed under Executive Order 12958 requiring declassification of government records. The Office of Naval Intelligence submitted its Final Declaration of Compliance dated May 18, 1998.”

US Army Deploys GOBLN Drone for Military Mine Clearance Operations during Project Convergence-Capstone 5

21 Mar, 2025 - 13:51

During the Project Convergence-Capstone 5 (PC-C5) exercise, held in March 2025 at Fort Irwin, California, the U.S. Army tested several advanced technologies aimed at improving interoperability and operational effectiveness on the battlefield.

The Ground Obstacle Breaching Lane Neutralizer (GOBLN) was demonstrated in multiple scenarios, as shown in drone images released by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Designed to neutralize mines and other ground obstacles remotely, the GOBLN reduces risks for combat engineers tasked with mine clearance and obstacle-breaching operations.

The Advanced Multi-Mission UAS R80D SkyRaider, an integral part of the GOBLN system, provides reconnaissance and detection capabilities with electro-optical and infrared sensors, enabling precise threat classification and remote mine clearance operations (Picture source: US DoD)

GOBLN is a modular system integrating multiple technologies. It consists of three main components: an 81mm automatic mortar system, a reconnaissance and detection drone, and a neutralization munition.

These elements work together to identify, target, and eliminate mines or other barriers while maintaining a safe distance for ground forces.

Ezoic

The first component is the 81mm automatic mortar system, mounted on a specialized vehicle. It is designed to fire high explosive (HE) rounds capable of neutralizing mines and other obstacles.

During tests at the Yuma Test Range in March 2024, military analysts observed three possible outcomes: direct impact damaging the mine’s fuze, immediate detonation upon impact, or ignition and combustion of the explosive charge, the latter being considered the most effective neutralization method.

The second key component is the Advanced Multi-Mission UAS R80D SkyRaider, a reconnaissance and detection drone.

This VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) UAV, developed for U.S. defense and federal agencies, combines agility with the capability to carry Group 2-3 payloads.

Equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors, it scans terrain for obstacles, minimizing risk to personnel. Its networked data integration allows for precise threat classification and optimized neutralization solutions.

The open-architecture design, via the Payload Development Kit (PDK), supports payloads of up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs), enhancing mission flexibility.

Additionally, its onboard artificial intelligence (AI) processing system enables semi-autonomous operation and effective function in GPS- or communication-denied environments.

Ezoic

The third component is the neutralization munition, deployed via the 81mm mortar system. During tests in Arizona, researchers analyzed strike effectiveness against strategically placed mines.

After each firing sequence, data was reviewed to adjust launcher positioning and improve targeting precision. This approach refines the system’s ability to neutralize obstacles with maximum accuracy.

The development and testing of GOBLN align with efforts to address persistent threats posed by landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on modern battlefields.

These hazards continue to cause significant casualties among military personnel and civilians.

The U.S. Army is seeking to enhance force protection while maintaining high operational tempo through solutions that improve clearance efficiency and minimize exposure to explosive threats.

Ezoic

The PC-C5 exercise serves as a critical platform for evaluating and integrating emerging technologies.

By focusing on interoperability between communication, detection, and weapon systems, the event enhances coordination between U.S. and allied forces.

It also demonstrates how systems like GOBLN can be incorporated into combined operations, improving decision-making speed and overall battlefield effectiveness.

The inclusion of GOBLN in PC-C5 highlights the Army’s growing focus on autonomous and semi-autonomous capabilities for modern operations.

The integration of advanced UAVs like the R80D SkyRaider with precision-guided mortar systems not only enhances clearance effectiveness but also reduces risks for personnel.

This development represents a shift in combat engineering tactics and may see operational deployment in future conflict zones.

The testing of GOBLN at PC-C5 marks a significant step in the evolution of obstacle clearance technology.

By incorporating AI, automation, and interoperability, the system demonstrates how the armed forces are adapting to emerging challenges and preparing for future engagements.

>Peter Navarro Explains Trump’s "3D War on Inflation" and "Bullish" Economic Outlook

Navarro: Trump Is Fixing the Real Drivers of Inflation

Peter Navarro didn’t mince words when it came to the battle against inflation. In an exclusive interview at the White House with The Alex Marlow Show podcast, hosted by Breitbart Business Digest co-author Alex Marlow, Trump’s senior trade and economic adviser laid out exactly how the administration is thinking about inflation and why the media is getting it all wrong.

Navarro describes inflation as an economic war that the administration is fighting on three critical fronts, a strategy he calls “Trump’s 3D War on Inflation.”

“This is a three-dimensional battle,” Navarro explained. “We’re going after inflation with deregulation, domestic energy, and defunding Biden’s overspending. That’s how we win.”

“Inflation is not primarily about tariffs,” Navarro insists. “That’s the red herring the media wants you to focus on. The real drivers are government overreach, energy costs, and reckless spending. That’s what Trump is fixing.”

Trump’s Three-Dimensional Fight Against Inflation

For Navarro, cutting government red tape is key to lowering costs across the economy. He argues that overregulation has suffocated businesses and driven up prices for consumers. “Every dollar a business spends on unnecessary regulations is a dollar that can’t go to hiring workers, raising wages, or lowering costs for consumers,” he explains. Trump’s approach is simple: “Cut the red tape, let businesses thrive, and prices will come down.”

He points to fertilizer costs as an example. “You can’t grow food without fertilizer, and fertilizer is made from petroleum. Biden’s energy policies drove those costs through the roof, and guess who paid for it? Every single American at the grocery store.” Lower energy prices, he argues, will have a ripple effect across the entire economy.

But Navarro doesn’t stop there. He is blunt about the role of reckless government spending in fueling inflation. “Biden’s multi-trillion-dollar spending spree threw gasoline on the inflation fire. We’re going to put that fire out.” Trump’s strategy, he explains, is to rein in federal spending, reduce deficits, and bring down borrowing costs. “Less spending means lower interest rates, lower mortgage rates, and lower credit card rates. We’re taking the weight of Washington off the economy.”

The Media’s ‘Gloom and Doom’ Narrative on Inflation Is Wrong

Navarro dismisses the mainstream media’s alarmism about inflation, accusing them of trying to “destabilize the Trump administration.” He argues that their obsession with tariffs is designed to mislead the public. “They don’t want you to focus on how Biden wrecked the economy. They just want to scare you about Trump’s policies,” he said.

He points out that Trump’s approach worked before. “In the first term, we saw real wages rise, especially for the working class. Biden reversed that. But we’re going to fix it again,” Narvarro said.

Navarro’s message is clear: the economic outlook under Trump is bullish. “When you cut the cost of doing business, cut the cost of energy, and cut out wasteful spending, inflation comes down, and wages go up,” he explained.

The administration sees this as a long-term structural fix, not just a short-term reaction. “This isn’t about reacting to inflation---it’s about winning the war against it once and for all.”

Trump Isn’t Playing Defense on Inflation---He’s Attacking It

Navarro is adamant that the mainstream media is pushing a false narrative. “They want you to think tariffs are the issue. They aren’t. Inflation is about energy, regulation, and spending---and Trump is tackling all three.”

This interview, conducted inside the White House, provides a critical insight into how Trump’s team is thinking about economic policy. As Navarro’s words make clear, the administration isn’t playing defense. It’s on the attack.

Nvidia will spend hundreds of billions on US manufacturing, says CEO

Chipmaker’s promise is a sign that Trump’s ‘America First’ policy is affecting investment

Kalyeena Makortoff Thu 20 Mar 2025 05.59 EDT

The boss of the world’s biggest computer chipmaker,Nvidia, has promised that the company will shell out “several hundred billion” dollarsto make semiconductors and other electronics in the USover the next four years.

The comments from Jensen Huang illustrate how the California-headquarteredAI chipmaker is remodelling its supply chain away from Asiaamid unpredictable tariff threats by Donald Trump.

The chief executive, who also co-founded Nvidia, told the Financial Times: “Overall, we will procure, over the course of the next four years, probably half a trillion dollars worth of electronicsin total.

And I think we caneasilysee ourselves manufacturingseveral hundred billion of it here in the US.”

The remarks are thelatest example of how Trump’s “America First” policyis having an impact on business investment, even forcing groups such as Nvidia -- which is among the world’s most valuable companies – to rethink their global footprint.

The Silicon Valley company, founded in 1993, has been the engine of the AI market boom, with hype around the technology propelling its valuation to a stratospheric $2.9tn (£2.2tn). But in recent years it andother big US tech companies, such as Apple, have become increasing dependent on chipmaking facilities in Taiwan run by TSMC and Foxconn -- a supply chain now under threat from trade wars and from China’s territorial designs on its neighbour.

Huang said he was confident that Nvidia was well-positioned to deal with any worsening situation inTaiwan, which is also vulnerable to earthquakes. “At this point, we know that we can manufacture in the US, we have a sufficiently diversified supply chain,” he added.

He added that theTrump administrationcould bein a position to bolster the US AI industryat a time of growing competition from China.

Huawei, for example, had become the “single most formidable technology company in China”, having “conquered every market they’ve engaged”. Huang argued US efforts to constrain the Chinese company had.

For now,“having the support of an administration who cares about the successof this industryand not allowing energy to be an obstacleis a phenomenal result for AI in the US”, Huang said, referring to the large amount of electricity needed to power its chips in datacentres.

Efforts to onshore manufacturing have beenhelped by a recent $100bn US investment by TSMC. The Taiwanese semiconductor firm’s investment means that Nvidia’s Blackwell chips -- its top-of-the-line graphics processing unit – are being produced in the US, providing for “a substantial step up in our supply chain resilience”.

Stealth Technology Breakthrough By Navy Researchers Could Revolutionize Underwater Drone Capabilities

March 21, 2025

In the dark, crushing silence of the deep ocean, a new kind of sonar could soon be making waves---not with high-powered acoustic blasts or flashy emissions but with the barely perceptible hum of a stealth underwater drone’s propeller.

In a breakthrough that could revolutionize underwater exploration and military surveillance, research funded by the U.S. Navy demonstrated that autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can use their self-generated noise to “see” beneath the ocean floor.

This novel approach, called through-the-sensor (TTS) sub-bottom imaging, eliminates the need for bulky and power-hungry sonar sources typically used in undersea mapping.

Instead, this new approach uses the low-frequency self-noise generated by an AUV’s propeller as a “source of opportunity” to reveal buried sediment layers, seafloor structures, and subsurface objects. No sonar pings.

No external emitters. Just the soft, mechanical thrum of an underwater drone on patrol---turned into a stealthy acoustic eye.

The research, recently published in JASA Express Letters, opens the door to stealthier, more energy-efficient, and potentially more autonomous operations beneath the waves.

Researchers demonstrated their proof-of-concept during field tests at the New England shelf break, a region known for its complex undersea topography.

A modified REMUS 600 AUV, outfitted with a short horizontal hydrophone array, gathered data as it cruised about 155 feet (35 meters) above the seabed.

The results showed that the passive images generated using the self-noise method closely matched those produced by the AUV’s active sonar system and reference scans conducted by the R/V Neil Armstrong using a Kongsberg multibeam profiler.

Despite operating at lower frequencies and with less power, the passive method successfully identified key geological features, including a deep basement layer buried approximately 105 feet ( 32 meters) beneath the seafloor.

“A potential advantage of this TTS method, besides being totally passive, is that it provides a means for performing low-frequency sub-bottom imaging using an AUV,” researchers wrote.

“Hence, this could potentially enable geoacoustic surveys with larger depth penetration, without the need to instrument the AUV with a separate active low-frequency source, which is typically associated with unique engineering challenges and payload requirements.”

A New Kind of Sonar

Sonar, or sound navigation and ranging, traditionally involves emitting sound waves into the water and recording their echoes to build images of the seafloor or underwater objects.

While effective, this approach has one major drawback: it’s loud. Active sonar can quickly reveal the presence of the vessel emitting it---a problem for submarines or AUVs operating in contested or clandestine environments.

However, this new method flips that model on its head. Instead of actively generating sonar pulses, the AUV uses its own mechanical sounds---specifically the low-frequency noise from its propeller—as a passive source of acoustic energy.

That noise, typically considered a nuisance, becomes a tool for sensing the environment.

The technique, called Through-the-Sensor (TTS) sub-bottom imaging, involves towing a short horizontal line array of hydrophones behind the AUV. As the AUV moves along, its propeller emits a consistent stream of low-frequency sound.

As the sound travels downward, it reflects off the seabed and layers beneath it and is picked up by the trailing hydrophones.

Using advanced signal processing algorithms---specifically, a variation of ray-based blind deconvolution—the system can infer the structure of the ocean floor and even what lies beneath it, like buried sediments or rock layers.

To make this work, the team focused on a frequency band between 100 Hz and 1 kHz. This range is characteristic of propeller noise and well-suited for penetrating below the seabed.

“This method is derived from the RBD [ray-based blind deconvolution] algorithm and thus potentially alleviates the need to instrument the AUV platform with a separate low-frequency active source,” researchers explained.

“Additionally, the AUV’s propeller effectively acts as a compact low-frequency source, which indeed enables the use of the RBD algorithm.”

Why It Matters for Future Stealth Underwater Drones

The implications are significant from a defense perspective. Submarine warfare, undersea surveillance, and reconnaissance missions depend heavily on staying hidden.

While powerful, active sonar risks exposing the vehicle’s location to enemy sensors. Passive sonar systems---those that listen without transmitting—offer stealth but have traditionally required large, sensitive arrays and often rely on environmental noise or external signals.

What makes this TTS approach unique is its ability to transform a drone’s unavoidable emissions into a powerful imaging tool---repurposing the vehicle’s own acoustic signature without adding any new noise.

That dual-use aspect---converting waste into a sensor—makes the system stealthy and potentially more efficient.

Without bulky or power-hungry active sonar systems, stealth underwater drones can carry less hardware, save energy, and extend mission duration.

Moreover, the hardware requirements are refreshingly simple. All that’s needed is an AUV with a towed hydrophone array and a processor capable of running the RBD algorithm.

This significantly reduces the vehicle’s payload burden and simplifies deployment in tight or unpredictable environments.

For military applications, this means smaller, more autonomous stealth underwater drones capable of quietly mapping the seabed, identifying mines, or detecting submarine cables while remaining undetected.

The REMUS 600 tests conducted by researchers demonstrated that even though the passive images had lower resolution than those from an active sonar system, they were still accurate enough to reveal critical details like the shape of the seafloor and the presence of deeper, more reflective layers---useful markers in tactical or scientific operations.

From Ocean Science to Tactical Advantage

While the defense benefits are clear, the technique also has promising civilian and scientific applications.

Oceanographers, geologists, and environmental researchers often require sub-bottom imaging to understand sediment layers, tectonic structures, or undersea resources.

Traditional methods require either large ships towing active sonar or long vertical arrays, both of which are costly and limited in maneuverability.

This new TTS method sidesteps many of those issues. Because the AUV can operate independently and passively, it could be deployed in sensitive environments where noise pollution or disturbance of marine life must be minimized.

It could also help reduce the logistical burden of deep-sea surveys, making them more accessible to researchers and smaller institutions.

Notably, this approach aligns with a growing trend in robotics and autonomous systems: designing smarter machines that efficiently use their own data and byproducts.

Just as some spacecraft now recycle waste heat for energy, and animals like bats and dolphins use bioacoustics to navigate, this technique embodies a biomimetic philosophy---treating the machine not merely as a tool but as a self-contained ecosystem of signals.

What’s Next: Toward Smarter, Stealthier Underwater Drones

Despite its promise, the current technique has limitations, and researchers note that improvements are needed before it becomes operational.

Chief among the challenges is that the self-noise signal is inherently weaker than active sonar pulses, requiring more extended data collection periods to build a clear image. Balancing the AUV’s movement, array stability, and environmental variability becomes crucial.

During testing, the team conducted a sensitivity study showing how shorter averaging times (2 seconds) yield lower-resolution images, while longer times (24 seconds) can wash out important spatial details if the terrain is highly variable. This could be a limitation in dynamic environments or faster-moving missions.

However, future work may address this by taking advantage of the full bandwidth of the AUV’s self-noise, potentially expanding beyond the 100 Hz to 1 kHz range.

Better understanding the vehicle’s acoustic “fingerprint”---how its noise radiates at different angles and frequencies—could also help improve resolution and reduce artifacts.

Another frontier involves enhancing the signal processing techniques themselves.

With more powerful onboard computing or cloud-based post-processing, future AUVs could adaptively tune their imaging strategies in real time, steering their listening arrays or changing course to optimize data collection.

Despite these challenges, for the U.S. Navy, this breakthrough represents a tantalizing step toward fully autonomous stealth underwater drones that can explore the depths in near silence, uncovering vital information all while remaining hidden from view.

Tesla owners are trading in their EVs at record levels, Edmunds says

Published Thu, Mar 20 20257:38 PM EDT (the bury the lead at the last sentence. CNBC gloating)

• Data from Edmunds shows that Tesla owners have been trading in their vehicles at record levels since CEO Elon Musk joined Trump’s White House.

• March represented “the highest ever share” Edmunds had seen for Tesla trade-ins toward new or used cars from brands sold at auto dealerships.

• “Shifts in Tesla consumer sentiment could create an opportunity for legacy automakers and EV startups to gain ground,” Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds, wrote in an email.

As Elon Musk wraps up his second month in the White House, Tesla owners are trading in their electric vehicles at record levels, according to an analysis by national car shopping site Edmunds.

The data from Edmunds published on Thursday said that March represented “the highest ever share” it had seen for Tesla trade-ins toward new or used cars from dealerships selling other brands.

Since heading to Washington, D.C., in January as a central figure in the second Trump administration, Musk, who is CEO of Tesla, has been slashing the federal workforce and government spending, and has gained access to sensitive government computer systems and data, though his efforts have been repeatedly challenged in court.

Before assuming leadership of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, Musk spent around $290 million last year to help propel President Donald Trump back to the White House.

While investors snapped up Tesla shares after Trump’s victory in November, they’ve been rushing for the exits of late, pushing the stock’s price down by 42% this year. Waves of protests have targeted Tesla facilities in the U.S. and beyond. Other criminal acts of vandalism and arson have targeted Tesla stores, vehicles and charging stations across the U.S.

In addition, Tesla is facing increased competition from EV makers. In January, S&P Global Mobility found Tesla sales declined about 11% year over year in the U.S., while Ford, Chevrolet and Volkswagen bolstered their sales of EVs, picking up market share.

“Shifts in Tesla consumer sentiment could create an opportunity for legacy automakers and EV startups to gain ground,” Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds, wrote in an email. “As Tesla brand loyalty and interest wavers, those offering competitive pricing, new technology, or simply less controversy could capture defecting Tesla owners and first-time EV buyers.”

The Tesla brand, more than that of any other automaker, is tightly tied to its CEO. In August 2024, Edmunds surveys found that just 2% of car shoppers in the U.S. were unfamiliar with Musk.

Edmunds also said that shopping for new models of Tesla vehicles on its platform dropped to its lowest level last month since October 2022 after peaking as late as November.

Even before Musk began heading up DOGE, Tesla’s brand was suffering. Its brand value fell by 26%, or about $15 billion, in 2024, a second straight annual decline, according to research and consulting firm Brand Finance.

Many car shoppers trade in their Tesla EVs for a newer model Tesla. Edmunds data didn’t account for those transactions.

Dramatic drone footage captures huge wildfire burning above Glasgow as smoke seen for miles

12:58, 21 MAR 2025

Drone footage shared with Glasgow Live shows a large wildfire over the city.

Emergency services rushed to the Kilpatrick Hills, north of Clydebank, on Thursday afternoon.

Crews remained on scene battling the blaze until the evening when poor light hampered their efforts.

The fantastic footage from Pix by Pedro shows the flames burning away on Thursday night, with Glasgow in the backdrop.

Plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the fire, with the flames spotted from as far away as East Kilbride during the peak.

In an update on Friday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze had been extinguished overnight and the area was now safe.

A spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 2.13pm on Thursday 20 March, to reports of a wildfire in the Kilpatrick Hills, near Old Kilpatrick in Dunbartonshire.

"Operations Control initially mobilised one appliance to the scene and on arrival crews called for the additional attendance of another three appliances.

“Firefighters worked to bring the wildfire under control and had to leave due to diminishing light.

Firefighters revisited at first light on Friday, 21 March and found that the fire had extinguished. They left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The wildfire came after the fire service issued an "extreme" warning for fires across Scotland, as temperatures finally begin to rise.

Loch Lomond rangers have also warned visitors not to light barbecues this week in the national park due to the fire risk.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a court filing Friday that Cabinet secretaries are considering invoking the state secrets privilege to avoid answering a judge’s questions about the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador.

"I understand that Cabinet Secretaries are currently actively considering whether to invoke the state secrets privilege over the other facts requested by the Court's order,” Robert Cerna, an acting field director of enforcement and removal operations for ICE wrote in a declaration filed by Blanche. “Doing so is a serious matter that requires careful consideration of national security and foreign relations, and it cannot properly be undertaken in just 24 hours."

Judge James Boasberg had ordered the Trump administration to provide more details about the fight or assert state secrets. A hearing on the issue was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The state secrets privilege, established through a series of Supreme Court decisions, allows the government to protect sensitive national security information from being disclosed in civil litigation. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit after Trump's proclamation of the Alien Enemies Act and the deportation flights began.

"The Government again evaded its obligations," Boasberg wrote in a filing Thursday, noting the filing from the ICE official included the same information about the flights. "This is woefully insufficient. To begin, the Government cannot proffer a regional ICE official to attest to Cabinet-level discussions of the state-secrets privilege."

Last week, Boasberg ordered the government turn around or halt flights carrying Venezuelan migrants removed under the Alien Enemies Act. The DOJ argued it complied with Boasberg's written order, suggesting they did not have to comply with the oral order, according to The Hill. The DOJ also has argued the matter was irrelevant because the flights were already out of U.S. territory by the time Boasberg's order landed on the docket.

The White House said Boasberg has no oversight over national security matters.

"The President is well within his Article II power and his authority under the Alien Enemies Act to make these decisions," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. "And we think it's egregious that a single district judge is trying to tell the president of the United States who he can and cannot deport from our soil, especially when it comes to designated foreign terrorists."

Also, was against sending troops to Viet Nam.

That policy was buried afterward to make pretend that nothing changed with his death, and there was, therefore, no political motive.

Seizing Russian assets would be ‘an act of war’ -- Belgian PM

The move would trigger retaliation from Moscow, Bart De Wever has warned

Confiscating Russian assets frozen in the EU would be considered “an act of war,” Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has warned, according to Politico. He cautioned that the move would likely provoke a response from Moscow.

Western countries froze an estimated $300 billion worth of Russian sovereign funds following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Around $213 billion of that is held by Euroclear, a Brussels-based clearing house. The frozen funds have already accrued billions in interest, of which Euroclear transferred €1.55 billion ($1.63 billion) to Kiev last July.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday,De Wever warned that seizing Russian assets would pose “systemic risks to the entire global financial system” and could trigger retaliation from Moscow.

“We’re not living in a world of fantasy. We’re in the real world, where if you take €200 billion from somebody there will be consequences,” the outlet quoted the Belgian prime minister as saying on Thursday.

De Wever’s warning comes as some EU countries including France and Spain have been pushing to confiscate Russian frozen assets as they seek to use the funds to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and improve its negotiating position in any future peace talks with Russia, the article noted.

Earlier this month, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that Paris will use interest accrued on Russian assets frozen in European banks to buy weapons for the Ukrainian military, a move condemned by Moscow.

While proceeds generated from the frozen funds are already being used to back a $50 billion loan for Ukraine provided by the G7,most Western nations have stopped short of directly confiscating the assets.

According to Politico,Belgium has a major stake in the issue as Euroclear is based in Brussels.

The country is reportedly concerned that handing over the funds to Kiev could expose Euroclear to additional legal claims from asset holders. Euroclear is already entangled in legal battles with several parties, many of whom have turned to Russian courts to challenge the asset freeze and demand compensation.

The International Monetary Fund has also warned that seizing the funds without a clear legal framework could erode global trust in Western financial institutions.

The Kremlin has condemned any attempts to confiscate Russian assets, labeling them “theft” and warning of serious legal repercussions. Russia has also hinted at potential retaliatory measures against Western investments in the country.

Shocking drone footage from 'massive explosion' that forced Heathrow Airport to shut down

13:07 21 Mar 2025 GMT

Shocking drone footage has revealed the extent of the blaze at an electrical substation near Heathrow Airport.

Earlier today (21 March), it was confirmed that the UK's busiest airport would be closed after a fire ripped through North Hyde electrical substation in West London.

The blaze has caused a power outage in the area, with thousands of homes also believed to be impacted by the power cut.

Meanwhile Heathrow is currently expected to remain closed until midnight, causing major travel disruption across the UK as 200,000 air passengers have their flights cancelled.

Nearby residents reported that they'd heard a 'massive explosion' before the power station went up in flames.

"We saw a bright flash of white and all the lights in town went out," one local told PA, while a second added heard the explosion just moments before all the power 'went off'.

"All the power went off, it just smelled like burning," she added.

Chilling drone footage captured last night has since revealed the extent of the blaze at the substation, with the fire currently believed to have been caused by a transformer.

London's Metropolitan police service has since confirmed there is currently 'no indication' of foul play at the moment, but added that the force's Counter Terrorism Command would be leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.

"While there is currently no indication of foul play we retain an open mind at this time," the statement read (via BBC).

"Given the location of the substation and the impact this incident has had on critical national infrastructure, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is now leading enquiries."

"It's too early to say what the precise cause of this was, but we'll obviously want to understand the cause and what, if any, lessons can be learned about the resilience of our infrastructure," Energy Secretary Ed Miliband told ITV News.

Meanwhile, a statement from Heathrow Airport warned of 'significant disruption' to air travel in the coming days, with flights diverted to Gatwick Airport, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, and Shannon Airport in the Republic of Ireland.

"We expect significant disruption over the coming days and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens," the statement read.

“We will provide an update when more information on the resumption of operations is available.

We know this will be disappointing for passengers and we want to reassure that we are working as hard as possible to resolve the situation.”

Waterville protesters target Elon Musk at Tesla charging station

Feb. 5---WATERVILLE — About 15 people stood in frigid temperatures Wednesday at one of the city's busiest intersections to protest the government granting the Department of Government Efficiency access to the computer system of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. DOGE, as the department is called, is led by tech billionaire and Tesla owner Elon Musk.

The protesters, set up next to a Tesla charging station at the entrance to Elm Plaza off Main Street, carried signs with messages including "Democracy, not Dictators," and "Arrest Musk."

Beth Schiller of Waterville said she fears for the country since Musk, whom President Donald Trump named to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, sent people into offices to access basic computer systems of the federal government. That data includes Americans' Social Security numbers, banking information, tax payments and other documents. DOGE is tasked with finding wasteful government spending.

"It makes no sense to have an unelected billionaire, the richest man in the world and the greediest man in the world, Elon Musk, running the payment system of our treasury," said Schiller, 68. "He has no authority or qualifications for doing that. It's completely illegal and it removes Congress from having the financial control that is constitutionally theirs."

Schiller's fears and concerns include those for her family, she said.

"My niece works for USAID in Washington and her husband works for the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, both of which are being wiped out, it seems," Schiller said.

She was referring to the U.S. Agency for International Development, which provides humanitarian assistance across the globe and has been targeted for elimination by Musk.

Protest organizer Elizabeth Leonard, 68, of Waterville, was holding a sign that said, "Senators! What are you doing now to stop the coup and restore the constitution, democracy and rule of law?"

An author, historian and professor emeritus of history at Colby College, Leonard said Musk's actions essentially amount to a coup against the government by someone who has no legal right to take it over. And Musk's actions are being allowed, according to Leonard.

"Any American who cares about the government, their privacy, their standing, their future, blackmail --- they should be standing up against this unelected, unvetted monster," she said.

Retired teacher Linda Woods, 73, of Waterville, said she is concerned for people on the margins who are severely impacted by Trump and Musk's actions.

"I thought our country was more humane, and watching this government is scary," Woods said. "We have a clear path of checks and balances that's not being followed. One person is coming in with his buddy and taking over."

Support pours in for Maine bookstore’s drag queen story hour after mayor’s attack

Cara DeRose May 15, 2019

Community members are pushing back against hateful rhetoric targeting Children’s Book Cellar, a locally owned bookstore in Waterville, which in partnership with Central Maine Pride is holding a Drag Story Hour intended to celebrate gender diversity in the state.

Elizabeth Leonard, who’s been a Waterville resident for over 30 years and often brought her own kids to Children’s Book Cellar,is organizing a rally on June 1, hoping to drown out a protest of the inclusive story hour by anti-LGBTQ activists, who say it’s a form of “indoctrination.”

Currently the pro-bookstore event has eight times as many planned attendees on Facebook.

“My own kids had a variety of role models in their regular lives to figure out who they were,” Leonard told Beacon. “I think they would be delighted to know now that this story hour is happening in Waterville, even though they don’t live here anymore, and would certainly come out in support.”

Drag Queen Story Hour was first established in 2015 by San Francisco author Michelle Tea, who organized the event after noticing the lack of diverse readers at the story times she brought her son to.

Designed to show children that sexuality and gender expression are not necessarily set in stone, hundreds of Drag Story Hours have taken place across the country, including one held in Portland in 2017, one in Lewiston in 2018, and another scheduled for June 1 in South Portland.

Support for the Waterville event grew after the town’s mayor, Nick Isgro, who has a history of bigoted statements and social media posts, claimed the story hour is an attempt at “scandalizing the children in our community.”

Kratos Reveals Secret Hypersonic Drone Program

March 19, 2025

Kratos is developing a hypersonic drone, adding to a growing portfolio of high-speed vehicles, CEO Eric DeMarco told Aviation Week in a March 18 interview.

All further details of the project---including the design, performance and schedule—cannot yet be released, DeMarco said.

The mystery vehicle can be supported by the Hypersonic System Indiana Payload Integration Facility (IPIF) that the company broke ground on in Crane, Indiana, on March 18.

Asked if the IPIF would support only payloads for hypersonic glide vehicles powered by solid rocket motors, DeMarco said vehicles with air-breathing propulsion technologies also are possible.

DeMarco previously has hinted at interest by Kratos in turbine-based hypersonic propulsion. In a 2019 press release announcing the acquisition of Florida Turbine Technologies (now Kratos Turbine Technologies, or KTT), DeMarco included a cryptic statement.

“Beyond traditional turbojet and turbofan engines, we are also focused on developing advanced, affordable engines for a new class of hypersonic propulsion system,” DeMarco said.

DeMarco has never elaborated on that statement. However, as its name implies, KTT specializes in air-breathing, turbine-based propulsion systems, not the solid rocket motors that boost hypersonic glide vehicles to hypersonic speed.

Kratos already has built a hypersonic portfolio with a pair of hypersonic glide vehicles called Erinyes and Dark Fury. Both can be powered by Kratos’ new Zeus rocket, an offshoot from the company’s Oriole sounding rocket.

Hypersonic technology---and air-breathing propulsion in particular—remains mainly at the developmental stage in the U.S. industrial base, with the operational Lockheed Martin/Leidos Long Range Hypersonic Weapon for the U.S. Army being the sole exception.

Despite the advanced nature of the technology, Kratos remains committed to avoid crossing the “bleeding-edge” of capability in new products.

The company prefers to work on fixed-price contracts, and the risk of overruns with inventing new technology are too high for Kratos, with its $1.1 billion of annual sales, to bear.

“Bleeding edge---something that’s never been done before—those are the types of fixed-price contracts that we tend to stay away from because it’s never been done before,” DeMarco said at the McAleese Defense Programs Conference outside Washington on March 18.

“We don’t have the size or the scale like a Boeing to be able to absorb and get the thing done for an amount of money. That’s just crazy. We just can’t do it.”

Trump eyeing Crimea as ‘international resort’ -- Hersh

The renowned American journalist has claimed that the US president wants to do business with Putin

US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering lifting sanctions against Moscowin order to turn Russia’s Crimean Peninsula into a major international resort, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has reported, citing a White House official.

Since his inauguration in January, Trump has pursued direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict in Ukraine. Hisadministration has indicated that it is open to recognizing Moscow’s sovereignty over Crimea and some of the Donbassas part of a potential peace deal.

The Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol officially joined Russia in 2014 following public referendums; they were followed in 2022 by the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye. Kiev continues to claim the territories as its own and has vowed to take them back, butMoscow has insisted that their status is non-negotiable.

In a post on his Substack blog on Thursday, Hersh reported thatTrump’s broader aim is to improve US-Russia relations through economic cooperation. The president, he says, is seeking to lift sanctions imposed since 2014 and 2022 and “form a partnership with Putin aimed at turning Crimea into a major international resort.”The official sourcecited in Hersh’s report added that“they might do the same in Donbass.”

The journalist noted that Trump’s approach is markedly different from that of the administration of Joe Biden, with his unnamed sourcedescribing the current president as an “economic winner.” Trump’s reported interest in Russian energy and natural resource assets includes oil, gas, and unmined rare earth metals.

Since taking office in January, Trump has reversed several foreign policy positions on Moscow. Following a phone call with Putin in February, US and Russian delegations met in Saudi Arabia, with both sides agreeing to restore diplomatic ties and explore joint business ventures after the Ukraine conflict is resolved.

Trump and Putin held another phone call on Tuesday to discuss a US-proposed ceasefire. According to statements from both sides, the conversation was productive, with Russia agreeing to a one-month halt on strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure as talks continue.

Disinformation researcher and Boston University professor Joan Donovan wasreading the news a few weeks ago when she came across the story of a grassroots protest at a Tesla charging station in Waterville, Maine.

About 15 people had gathered to show their opposition to Tesla chief executive Elon Musk’s efforts on behalf of the Trump administration to slash staffing at federal agencies without first seeking congressional approval. The protesters carried signs reading, “Democracy, not dictators,” and, “Arrest Musk,” according to a report in the Waterville Morning Sentinel that Donovan saw.

The anti-Musk protest that frozen morning in Maine had been organized by another scholar ---Colby emeritus history professor Elizabeth Leonard. “I was thinking it would be good to do something making it clear there’s a problem with this person being in our government and doing all this mischief,” Leonard told the Globe on Tuesday. “I said to a friend, ‘It’s kind of a shame we don’t have a Tesla dealership here,’ and she said, ‘We do have a charging station.’”

Donovan, who had been growing increasingly concerned about the Trump administration, said the idea of using a Tesla backdrop to protest Musk appealed to her, and so she decided to organize a similar action in Boston.

“Get inspired by these folks in Maine,” she wrote in a late evening Feb. 8 post on the social network Bluesky. “Take a few friends to a Tesla dealership and picket on the sidewalk. All social change starts small and snowballs over time.”

The post took off and in follow-up posts, Donovan added a flyer promoting a picket line on Feb. 15 at Tesla’s Back Bay showroom and coining the hashtag #TeslaTakeover. She also cited the inspiration of the successful 2014 consumer boycott of supermarket chain Market Basket over the treatment of workers.

The posts got the attention of film director and activist Alex Winter, who has more than 170,000 followers on Bluesky. He contacted Donovan, and with her approval, started spreading the message to a wider audience and building online tools to organize more protests. Winter’s site --- teslatakedown.com — currently lists about 60 upcoming protests at Tesla facilities from California to Florida and even spreading abroad to London and Lisbon, Portugal.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk’s high-profile advocacy for Trump’s policies and his extreme political posts on X, the social network he owns, have already been hurting Tesla sales, analysts said. Last week, Musk stirred more controversy by vowing to fire federal workers who don’t respond to an email asking them to list five things they accomplished.

Sales of Tesla vehicles dropped 45 percent in Europe in January, even as sales of all brands of electric cars jumped 37 percent, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Data are not available for the US market yet.

But in the United States, the problem for Tesla is that Democrats are much more likely than Republicans to buy an electric vehicle, according to analyst Stephen Gengaro at brokerage firm Stifel. Tesla’s favorability rating among consumers is close to an all-time low in survey data going back to 2018, Gengaro noted in a report this month.

And Tesla’s stock price has dropped more than 25 percent over the past month, amid growing concern over the company’s sales slump. Tesla automotive sales declined 8 percent in the fourth quarter and operating income dropped 23 percent.

Donovan said she will be out protesting again on Saturday.

“It was important to me to show federal workers that the rest of us are paying attention,” said Donovan, who works at Boston University but said she is protesting as a private citizen. “The grievances really do come through at the protests, where people share information about what is happening in Gaza, Ukraine, to the rights of LGBTQ people, the rollback of civil rights in the form of policies against DEI, and so much more.”

Judge Theodore D. Chuang has barred Jeremy Lewin, a former DOGE team member, from becoming Deputy Administrator of USAID.

Instead of letting the administration make its own staffing decisions, Judge Chuang decided Lewin’s loyalty to Trump disqualified him.

Government lawyers asked for clarity --- the judge flat-out denied it and warned he could expand the ban if they try any workarounds.

In effect, one judge is now acting as the self-appointed HR department for the federal government...

Czech President Petr Pavel arrives in Kyiv after drone attack in Odesa

March 21, 2025 2:58 PM

zech President Petr Pavel arrived in Kyiv on March 21, the Office of the President of the Czech Republic announced in a statement.

"On the morning of Friday, March 21, President Petr Pavel arrived in Kyiv, where he will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal," it said.

As part of his two-day visit to Ukraine, Pavel on March 20 met with Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba in Odesa, along with the leadership of the Odesa Oblast, and representatives of the cities of Mykolaiv and Kherson.

During his visit to Odesa, Russia launched three groups of Shahed-type drones at the city, Kuleba said on March 20.

"The entire civilized world should see Russia's crimes against Ukraine," Kuleba added.

Three people were injured during the attack, and civilian infrastructure was damaged, Odesa Oblast Governor Oleh Kiper said.

The officials discussed maritime security, post-war reconstruction, and community development.

Kuleba highlighted the urgent need for de-mining efforts, also noting that since summer 2023, Russia has fired more than 450 missiles at Ukraine's port infrastructure.

Kuleba invited Pavel to attend the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine, which is set to take place in Rome this summer.

Border Patrol Issues Warning Amid Cartel Drone War

Mar 21, 2025 at 8:11 AM EDT

The U.S. Border Patrol chief has issued a warning to Mexican crime syndicates amid a cartel-on-cartel drone war.

"We have seen cartel-on-cartel violence that involves drones. We prepare and train to be ready to fight the enemy on any ground," Chief Mike Banks told NewsNation.

"We're impacting the cartels' ability to make billions of dollars."

Cartels have carried out attacks against rival syndicates over territory and trafficking routes. Donald Trump signed an executive order designating Mexican drug cartels and other Latin American criminal groups as terrorist organizations.

Trump's order states that these groups "threaten the safety of the American people, the security of the United States, and the stability of the international order in the Western Hemisphere."

Banks said that tackling the cartels is a top priority for the Border Patrol under the Trump administration.

He warned that the threat of cartel violence spilling into the U.S. from the southern border is very real. Border agents have received several memos cautioning them about potential attacks.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, there have been two shootouts at the border, according to NewsNation.

There have also been drone incursions from the southern side, however, the agency has the technology to counter these drones.

Agents are handling an average of 250 encounters per day, marking a 95 percent decline of over 95 percent during the Trump administration.

There has been a string of alarming activity involving the cartels along the southern border in recent months.

A 74-year-old farmer was killed by an improvised explosive device in February. Authorities said a cartel planted an IED that killed a Texas rancher and another individual and injured a third person.

Suspected Mexican cartel members fled to Fronton Island after a gunfight with U.S. Border Patrol agents near the southern border in January.

Meanwhile, Congressman Keith Self, a Republican from Texas, has called for a more aggressive stance against the cartels operating along the U.S.-Mexico border, arguing that the United States must go on the offense rather than remain defensive.

President Trump has floated the possibility of deploying American troops into Mexico to combat the country's powerful and influential drug lords, saying it "could happen."

The Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Cártel del Noreste, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, the Gulf Cartel, and Cárteles Unidos have been designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration.

Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua is viewed by Trump as an invading force and the President has invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a seldom-used 1798 law that allows him to deport "noncitizens" during wartime.

His administration is sending members to a prison in El Salvador amid a federal judge's efforts to ban the deportations.

Banks told NewsNation: "We will get operational control of the United States border, absolutely."

Speaking on cartel violence, Representative Richard Hudson, a Republican from North Carolina, told Newsweek: "These cartels control our southern border.

They've moved back and forth with impunity, and they are very dangerous. They're flooding our neighborhoods and streets with fentanyl and deadly drugs.

They've got violent gangs running their networks inside the United States. It's a real threat to the American people, and so I'm glad the president is taking us on and very serious about it. It's a major priority."

Speaking on increased action against cartels, Representative Keith Self told Newsweek: "We don't need to be cowering in our holes. We need to be threatening the cartels, like I tried to do, to tell them, 'You do not want to go to war with the United States."

Alex Nowrasteh, vice president for economic and social policy studies at the Cato Institute, previously told Newsweek: "The Trump administration's policies are all wrong.

Cartels will only be put out of business by legalizing drugs and immigration, not by declaring war on them. If the government crushes one cartel and drug prices rise, a new cartel will enter the market to earn those higher profits.

The U.S. Border Patrol will continue efforts to deter cartels from smuggling drugs across the border.

US Justice Department moves to protect Trump from January 6 lawsuits

The Department of Justice asked to remove President Donald Trump as a defendant in lawsuits related to Jan. 6, 2021, and replace him with the U.S. government, multiple outlets reported---a move that could protect him from civil lawsuits from police and lawmakers trying to hold him accountable for the riot.

Broken promises and burned pipelines: Why diplomacy with Kiev is a dead end

Ukraine blew up a Russian gas facility just days after a mutual agreement not to do just that. As if anyone expected something different.

By Nadezhda Romanenko, political analyst

In a brazen act of duplicity, Ukrainehas once again demonstrated that it is not a reliable partner for diplomacy -- let alone peace.

Mere days after a US-brokered agreement saw Moscow and Kiev commit to a mutual moratorium on targeting each other’s energy infrastructure, Ukrainian forces reportedly launched a deliberate strike on a gas metering station in Russia’s Kursk region. This was no accident, no miscommunication, and no unfortunate timing---it was a calculated breach of trust and yet another glaring signal that Ukraine cannot be reasoned with.

The agreement in question was a result of a bold and rare diplomatic effort led by President Donald Trump, who had secured direct conversations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.

Despite the immense complexities of this long-running conflict, Trump managed to extract a commitment from both sides: a 30-day freeze on attacks against energy infrastructure. It was a starting point -- modest, but meaningful.

And yet, even that modest agreement was too much for Kiev to honor.

Russia, for its part, not only adhered to the ceasefire but did so with a level of discipline and self-restraint that should have been headline news across the globe. In a show of integrity seldom seen in modern warfare, Russian forces actively intercepted and shot down their own drones -- already airborne and en route to targets – because those drones had been launched prior to the agreement’s announcement. That is a serious country taking a serious peace process seriously.

Contrast that with Kiev’s conduct. According to reports from the ground and satellite imagery, a Ukrainian strike targeted the gas infrastructure facility near Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region. The attack caused a fire, damage to critical energy infrastructure, and sent a clear message: Ukraine is not interested in honoring its word, and it certainly isn’t interested in diplomacy -- only escalation.

This latest incident is not occurring in a vacuum. It is part of a long and well-documented pattern of deception and provocation, especially in the face of good-faith overtures by Russia.

Let’s go back. In 2014, the Minsk agreementswere hailed as the roadmap to a peaceful resolution in the Donbass. Russia backed them, and Western leaders nodded approvingly. But years later, former Western officials themselves openly admitted that Minsk was never intended to be implemented -- it was merely a ploy to buy time for Kiev to rearm. In other words, a lie from the very beginning.

In 2022, there was another real opportunity. Talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators reportedly came close to a viable ceasefire. But just as Kiev was nearing a deal, then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson intervened, reportedly urging Ukraine to walk away from the table. The result? Thousands more lives lost and the door to peace slammed shut once again.

Military personnel, journalists killed in drone attack on presidential palace in Khartoum, Sudan

19:46 UTC+8, 2025-03-21

Some military personnel and journalists were killed in a drone attack targeting a military and media gathering inside the Republican Palace in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, according to a military source.

The incident came after official Sudan TV reported that the Sudanese Armed Forces regained control of the Republican Palace, or the presidential palace, which had been held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023.

The RSF vowed Friday in a statement that the battle for the Republican Palace is "not over yet," stressing its forces remain in the vicinity and continue to fight.

Now, in 2025, with yet another window of opportunity pried open through diplomacy -- this time led by Trump– Ukraine has apparently chosen to burn it down. Literally. The Kursk attack is not a deviation from Ukraine’s diplomatic record; it is the continuation of it.

To President Trump’s credit, his efforts thus far have been the most realistic of any Western leader since the conflict began. Unlike the performative moralizing of his predecessor or the reckless interference of EU and UK heads of state,Trump’s approach has been grounded in pragmatism: reduce civilian suffering, de-escalate the war incrementally, and restore a framework for diplomacy. But those efforts require a willing partner.

Russia has signaled, time and again, that it is ready. Even now, despite this attack,Moscow has not withdrawn from the agreement. It is attending talks. It is engaging. It is showing up to the table. But the table is increasingly starting to look like a trap, set for anyone naive enough to believe Kiev’s promises.

And that is the central, bitter truth: Kiev has shown not just unreliability, but outright duplicity. It will sign agreements, only to break them. It will smile for the cameras, only to sabotage talks behind the scenes. It will invoke Western values while acting in direct opposition to the very foundations of diplomacy and peace.

For Washington -- especially President Trump – this should be the wake-up call. The Kursk strike wasn’t just an attack on Russian infrastructure; it was an attack on diplomacy itself. It was an attack on the possibility of peace.

The world has now seen, repeatedly, who honors their word and who discards it the moment it’s politically convenient.Russia has shown that it is willing to pause, to restrain, to negotiate. Ukraine has shown that it will exploit every agreement, twist every olive branch into a weapon, and backstab at every opportunity.

There can be no more illusions. No more Minsk-style traps. No more Istanbul disappointments. If there is to be peace, it cannot be built on the quicksand of Kiev’s promises. Any further negotiations must be predicated on reality -- not hope – and the reality is this: one side is showing maturity, consistency, and openness. The other is showing that it cannot be trusted, or even talked to.
