Washington is set to withdraw from a European campaign aimed atprosecuting alleged aggression, the newspaper has reported

The administration of US President Donald Trump isretreating from initiatives aimed at investigating and prosecuting alleged Russian crimes linked to the Ukraine conflict, the New York Times reported on Monday.

According to sources cited by the newspaper, the US Department of Justice (DOJ)will withdraw from the EU-backed International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine(ICPA), established to investigate Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Iran for the “alleged crime” of international aggression.

The US became the only non-European ICPA member when it joined in 2023. Sources told the NYT thatWashington had informed European partners about its imminent exitahead of a formal announcement.

Administration officials reportedlyjustified the withdrawal by citing a broader reduction in government expenditures. The DOJ had pledged $1 million to support European investigators when US participation was initially announced.

Additionally, Washington iscurtailing operations of a DOJ team known as WarCAT, formed in 2022 to train Ukrainian prosecutorson charging andtrying Russians for alleged war crimes, according to NYT sources. (Everything Kiev accuses of Russia and others, they do themselves.)

Last week, reports emerged that theUS had cut funding for a Yale-based research groupsearching for Ukrainian children “abducted” by Russia. Moscow has dismissed Kiev’s allegations of state-orchestrated kidnappings of thousands of minors as politically motivated mischaracterizations of its evacuation efforts in war-affected areas.

Trump is aiming to normalize bilateral relations with Russia, viewing a resolution of the Ukraine conflict as a crucial step. He and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to have a direct phone conversation this week.

Trump unveils date for next call with Putin

The Kremlin has yet to confirm plans for the next conversation between the two leaders

US President Donald Trump has announced thathe expects to hold a phone conversationwith his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin,on Tuesday to discuss the prospects of a peaceagreement in the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he plans to speak with Putin on March 18, according to the AP.

“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end.We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” Trump was quoted as saying. (Currently Russia had taken control over the only power plant in Ukraine, Kiev have attempted to bomb it, get it back, but the plant is in Russian territory of areas that joined Russia)

US special envoy Steve Witkoff previously stated that Trump and Putin were expected to hold a telephone conversation this week to discuss efforts toward establishing a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. Witkoff, who recently met with Putin in Moscow, described the discussions as “positive” and indicated that both Russian and Ukrainian parties are now “a lot closer” in negotiations.

“I expect that there’ll be a call with both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage and have conversations with the Ukrainians,” Witkoff said.

On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a separate phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during which the two top diplomats discussed further steps to reestablish direct communication between their countries.

The first formal telephone conversation between the Russian and US leaders in years took place on February 12, 2025. It was followed by high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, where Washington and Moscow agreed to assign teams to work on resolving the Ukraine conflict, restore embassy operations, and address other points of contention in bilateral relations. Since then, additional discussions have been held in Istanbul, focusing on diplomatic funding and a proposal from Moscow to reinstate direct flights.

Following negotiations in Jeddah last week, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. Shortly after, Witkoff traveled to Moscow on Thursday to present Putin with the details of the proposal.

The Russian president welcomed the ceasefire in principle but insisted on addressing several key issues first, including the fate of Ukrainian troops encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region. While the details of Witkoff’s meeting with Putin have not been made public, Trump hinted at progress, stating that the White House had received “some pretty good news” regarding the ceasefire efforts and that US-Russia meetings over the past several days had been “very productive.”

The proposal was reportedly outlined by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at a virtual meeting of the so-called ‘coalition of the willing’ on Saturday.

Starmer first announced plans for the coalition alongside France earlier this month, aiming to rally nations willing to continue military support for Ukraine amid concerns over potential US aid cuts. At a press briefing following Saturday’s meeting, Starmer said “dozens” of partner nations back the idea of deploying a peacekeeping force, with UK Defense Secretary John Healey set to meet with military chiefs in London this week to discuss details, including troop numbers and deployment timelines.

According to The Times, the force could comprise up to 30,000 troops, with the UK and France supplying the majority. An unnamed senior official said the British deployment in particular would be open-ended.

“It would be a long-term commitment, we are talking about years. As long as it takes to preserve a peace deal and deter Russia,” the official added.

Starmer noted,however, that the troops would be sent only after Moscow and Kiev agree on a peace deal with the aim of monitoring and upholding it. Russia has categorically rejected any Western military presence in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that the idea is “completely unacceptable to Russia”due to security risks. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the current deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, warned on Sunday that thedeployment of NATO forces, even under a peacekeeping mandate,would trigger direct war between Moscow and the military bloc.

The de facto Yemeni authorities have vowed retaliation for the ongoing deadly bombing campaign

The US has reportedly launched new airstrikes targeting the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah after the leader of the Houthi movement, Sayyed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, delivered a fiery speech condemning the attacks and threatening direct military action against American naval forces.

US President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagonto carry out a “decisive and powerful” operationon Saturday, aiming to dismantle the Houthi leadership and their ability to disrupt vital shipping lanes in the region. The first round of US strikes overnight killed at least 53 people, including women and children, and left nearly 100 injured, according to Yemen’s Houthi-run Health Ministry.

In his speech on Sunday, al-Houthi urged the Yemeni people to mobilize to confront the American “escalation with escalation,” insisting that Yemen will not be pressured into submission.

“The American aircraft carrier and warships will be our target, and the decision to ban navigation will include the US as long as it continues its aggression,” he declared.

The Houthis claimed to have targeted the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in the northern Red Sea with a volley of 18 ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, earlier on Sunday.

A senior US defense official told Fox News thatapproximately a dozen attack drones were intercepted and neutralized before posing a serious threatto the carrier group, leaving the Truman and its accompanying vessels unaffected.

The Ansar Allah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, has controlled a large part of war-torn Yemen since the mid-2010s. The group launched dozens of strikes on international shipping assets in late 2023 as part of a campaign staged in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. Initially blocking only Israeli-linked maritime traffic, theHouthis later expanded their targets to include American and British commercial and military shipsafter a series of joint US-UK strikes on Yemen.

The group put its campaign on hold in January after Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas reached a fragile US-mediated ceasefire. However, last week, they pledged to resume attacks on Israeli ships, accusing West Jerusalem of ignoring the terms of the deal and “starving” people in Gaza.

The latest warning adds US military vessels – but not commercial ships– to the list of potential targets by the group, which was recently redesignated by the Trump administration as a terrorist organization.

On Sunday night, the US reportedly launched another series of strikes targeting Hodeidah,which houses an international airport and three vital ports, according to the Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV and other local media.

Without listing the targets of the latest sorties, the US Central Command confirmed that its forces “continue operations against Iran-backed Houthi terrorists.” Washington has indicated it has no intention of stopping its campaign until the Houthi threat is eliminated.

The minute the Houthis say we’ll stop shooting at your ships, we’ll stop shooting at your drones, this campaign will end. But until then, it will be unrelenting,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

More than 20 people have been arrested for assaulting police officers and causing property damage in the Serbian capital

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has praised police for handling a crowd of over 80,000 protesters “responsibly,” ensuring order and public safety during an anti-government rally in the Serbian capital that turned violent, resulting in 56 people being injured and 22 arrested.

The authorities estimated that 88,000 to 107,000 people took part in Saturday’s rally, described as one of the largest in Serbia’s recent history. Vucic accused instigators within the largely peaceful crowd of attempting to stage a color revolution, alleging foreign influence aimed at destabilizing the country.

Violence erupted when “several dozen people in an intoxicated state” attempted to attack policeofficers and others outside the presidential building in Pionirski Park, Vucic said. Security forces arrested 22 individuals for assaulting officers and damaging property.

The Serbian leader said he is proud that most of the protesters remained peaceful and that those responsible for the violence had been arrested.

“I realized that these young people did not want to participate in the violence after the first incidents. They left the gathering when they realized that they no longer had control,” Vucic said.

During a televised address from the Palace of Serbia, Vucic confirmed that 56 people were being treated at local hospitals following the clashes. He noted that despite “enormous and negative energy, and anger and rage expressed towards the authorities,”there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

The president commended the police for their restraint. “I am especially proud of our police and security services. They ensured safety for all participants,” he wrote on social media, adding that despite the unrest,law enforcement exercised restraint and did not use force.
