Sept 9 (Reuters) – Chevron Corp CVX.N started withdrawing contractor workers from its Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Saturday, shortly after staff went on strike at two major projects in Australia, a union coalition said.

“Chevron chartered a special flight this morning to Barrow Island to evacuate 50 blue and white collar contract crew off the Gorgon Project,” Offshore Alliance said in a Facebook post.

The two sides are at odds over issues including pay, job security, rosters and rules around overtime and transfers between Chevron facilities.

“We will continue to take steps to maintain safe and reliable operations in the event of disruption at our facilities,” a spokesperson for Chevron told Reuters.

Workers at Chevron’s LNG projects in Australia started strike action on Friday after talks broke down, potentially disrupting output from facilities that account for over 5% of global supply.

No further talks were scheduled between the unions and the U.S. energy major, according to the website of the Fair Work Commission, Australia’s industrial umpire, which had mediated five days of negotiations.

Australia is the world’s biggest LNG exporter and its main buyers are in Asia.

The dispute over wages and conditions at Chevron’s Gorgon and Wheatstone operations has supported British and European gas prices, as traders anticipate lower Australian supplies would intensify competition from other sources.

On Saturday, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic completed its first space launch in over two years from Spaceport America in Sierra County with the launch of VSS Unity, making New Mexico only the third state to send humans to space.

To mark the occasion, former Gov. Bill Richardson, Branson, and current Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham came together to see the launch. While Richardson was governor, he had the State of New Mexico pump hundreds of millions of dollars into the creation of the Spaceport.

But Branson and Richardson did not likely only know each other from the space launch transaction. They both were included in allegedly slain pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s “little black book.” Epstein was a sexual degenerate and pedophile who used strong-arm tactics to feed the sexual desires of powerful people and latch onto economic wealth.

In a 2016 deposition, Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein sex worker claimed she was instructed “to go to (former U.S. Sen.) George Mitchell, (modeling agent) Jean-Luc Brunel, Bill Richardson, another prince that I don’t know his name. A guy that owns a hotel, a really large hotel chain, I can’t remember which hotel it was.” She claims she was told by Epstein and the billionaire’s “madam” Ghislaine Maxwell to give the former governor “erotic massages.”

Dozens of accusers say they were underage, some as young as 14, when Epstein allegedly sexually abused them.

Although Richardson denies the allegations, the accusations remain.

Epstein purchased a secluded, 10,000-acre Zorro Ranch in southern Santa Fe County, which according to the Santa Fe New Mexican, “he purchased from former Gov. Bruce King in the early 1990s. On that property is a 26,700-square-foot hilltop mansion as well as a small airplane hangar and airstrip.”

Epstein called on Richard Branson and Bill Gates to appear alongside him during a 2014 panel about money’s origins at Arizona State University according to an email from theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss at the time.

According to the Daily Mail, “It was Krauss who revealed this news in a 2013 email to Jim Simons, asking the famed mathematician if he might be interested in a spot on the same panel.

Krauss wrote to Simmons that Epstein was coordinating the panel on the Origins of Money, and said ‘right now he has Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Larry Summers on board.’”

It is unclear if Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham had any connection to the pedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

After the space launch, Lujan Grisham did praise Branson and Richardson in a statement, writing, “On behalf of proud New Mexicans everywhere, I’m incredibly grateful to so many dedicated and visionary collaborators in this effort, not east Sir Richard Branson and former Governor Bill Richardson the entire Virgin Galactic team and Spaceport America team who made this long-awaited day possible.”

When her first husband Gregory Alan Grisham died in 2004 from a brain aneurism, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham encountered the same difficult decisions many people face when their loved ones pass away: what to do next with their remains. In the case of her husband, Grisham was cremated, and “we weren’t ready,” the governor said. “We didn’t have a plot or a family cemetery or a family-unified church relationship. It was very diverse. And I’m going to suggest that’s probably more often the case for families.”

Ultimately, Lujan Grisham’s family chose to use a columbarium—essentially a structure that stores and even displays urns containing cremated remains. “But we didn’t feel as connected as we needed to, and actually going to visit that space was limited,” she said. So, the family worked with a company that transformed a portion of the ashes into gems she and her daughters share. “They still mean something to us,” she said. “They’re environmentally sound, and we can carry them with us when we choose.”

Parting Stone CEO and founder Justin Crowe is well aware of the lack of options for people struggling in the face of loss to deal with human remains. After his grandfather died in 2015, the entrepreneur spent a lot of time thinking about death and mortality and how to improve the cremation industry so people could have more meaningful experiences.

His company takes the full remains of both humans and non-human animals and solidifies them into a form that resembles a collection of smooth stones. In 2018, Parting Stone won the BizMIX competition and a $5,000 prize (disclaimer: This writer served as a judge on that panel), and the company has only continued to grow since.

On Aug. 10, Lujan Grisham announced the state is pledging $150,000 from the Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) so Parting Stone can grow from 20 to 109 employees with an average salary of $48,000 at its new Santa Fe facility, where it moved at the start of the year.

“I am really excited about the emotional aspect about what you’ve done for people,” Lujan Grisham said to Crowe during her remarks, ”including what a difference this can make going forward for my family,” she added, referencing the death of her mother, Sonja Lujan, last April, and noting that had the company and its services been available when her husband died, “it would have made a difference in that space.”

The City of Santa Fe will serve as fiscal agent for the funds and has pledged an additional $25,000 of local LEDA economic assistance, pending review and approval by the Santa Fe City Council.

“Every great startup begins with a big idea,” Mayor Alan Webber said during a news conference announcing the award held at Parting Stone. “And the big idea here couldn’t be more profound, and that is that every one of us needs to have a better option for dealing with death than we have had in the past… My experience in entrepreneurship is that all great startups do a number of things: they change the conversation. In your case, you’re changing the conversation about something profound.”

In the years since winning BizMIX, Crowe has also won the Balloon Pitch and Ski Lift pitch competitions; participated in the TechSprint startup accelerator at New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center and developed the technology his company uses with help from Los Alamos National Laboratory through the New Mexico Small Business Assistance Program. Last April, the state awarded Parting Stone $134,000 in Job Incentive Training Program (JTIP) funding for 15 trainees. He has also received significant buy-in from private investors.

“This is a shining star from BizMIX,” City Economic & Community Development Department Director Rich Brown tells SFR. “And we’re very excited about the growth and his ability to leverage the ecosystem.”

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — In a federal lawsuit, 3 former employees of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee claim the insurer violated their civil rights when firing them after they were denied a religious exemption from the company's COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

The plaintiffs are James Abernathy of Davidson County, Tennessee, Heather Click of Sullivan County, Tennessee and Kerrie Ingle of Soddy-Daisy.

In August of 2021, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) announced a company-wide vaccine mandate. All employees were given 6 weeks to either comply and get the shot, or request an exemption.

In each of their respective accommodation requests, Plaintiffs explained their belief that the COVID-19 vaccines—as well as other vaccines—were developed (either directly or through testing) using fetal cell lines derived from aborted fetal tissue and that it would be sinful to interject such products into their bodies,' the lawsuit says. 'They believe a Christian’s body being surrendered to God is a form of spiritual worship. (See, e.g., Romans 12:1). Plaintiff Heather Click additionally believes that the vaccine causes the body to create proteins God did not intend the body to create, which is in itself a form of disobedience to God.

But the lawsuit says

However, as to each and every employee who requested accommodation on religious grounds, Defendant denied the accommodation....Indeed, Defendant instituted a pattern and practice of denying religious accommodations to the entire class of those who requested accommodations based on their sincerely held religious beliefs, irrespective of such person’s position, accommodations requested, religion practiced, or any other differentiating factor.

The 3 plaintiffs were ultimately fired for not complying with the mandate.

We reached out to BCBST for comment.

A spokeswoman told us via email,

“We do not comment on pending or ongoing litigation, but we are confident that the court will make the right decision in resolving this dispute. The vaccine requirement was the best decision for the health and safety of our employees, our members – some of whom are the most vulnerable in the state – and our communities. Because we serve federally funded programs, our decision was also consistent with the latest guidance requiring our employees to be vaccinated. We appreciate our former employees’ service to our members and communities throughout their time with BlueCross.”

We followed up with the spokeswoman to ask if the claim that all requests for vaccine exemption on religious grounds in the company were denied. We're waiting to hear back, and we'll update our story if and when we do.

Undocumented immigrants in Minnesota can apply for driver’s licenses in October

About 81,000 undocumented immigrants in Minnesota can begin applying for a driver’s license next month, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Minnesota’s Driver’s License for All program launches October 1, the department announced at a news conference Thursday.

“We’ll be able to start taking applications for driver’s licenses for all Minnesotans, including those who don’t have lawful presence in the United States,” said Pong Xiong, director of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services.

The state will “no longer require proof of legal presence” starting in October, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said in a news release Tuesday.

Xiong said Thursday that he understands “how important it is to have a driver’s license and what that means to being able to access all of Minnesota’s resources from employment to medical care to … just enjoying all the natural resources that Minnesota has to offer.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed the bill allowing for the expansion of driver license applications in March, according to a release from his office.

“With an estimated 81,000 undocumented immigrants in Minnesota, the bill will increase safety across Minnesota by ensuring that all drivers are licensed, insured, and have taken driver’s education courses,” the March release stated.

At the time of the signing, the governor said the program “makes sure that our children and families can come out of the shadows and that all Minnesotans have opportunities to thrive, succeed, grow and live their fullest lives in our state.”

Minnesota has more undocumented immigrants than about half the numbers reported in other individual states and Washington, DC, and most of Minnesota’s undocumented immigrants come from Mexico and Central America, according to data from the Migration Policy Institute.

California has the largest population of undocumented immigrants in the US with more than 2.7 million, the institute reported.

The two states are among 19 as well as DC that have enacted laws allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

A Minneapolis resident and DFL vice chair has apparently reversed her anti-law enforcement stance following a brutal carjacking in her driveway.

Violent attack spurs a welcome change of heart

Earlier this week, in broad daylight, Shivanthi Sathanandan was violently attacked and carjacked by a group of armed young men in the driveway of her Minneapolis home. The attack left Sathanandan with a broken leg, and cuts and bruises over much of her body. Her children witnessed the assault, and her neighbors who tried to come to her aid were allegedly robbed by the assailants as well. According to reports, Sathanandan’s car was abandoned and later recovered by the Minneapolis Police Department.

Notably, Sathanandan is the vice chair of the Minnesota DFL party, which for years has taken a soft on crime, reform based, public safety stance. It’s also the party that has endorsed the likes of local prosecutors and city council members who have championed soft on crime reforms and have openly advocated for the defunding of police and the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Sathanandan herself has been a vocal advocate of the “Defund the Police “movement. In 2020 she posted on her Facebook page with Minneapolis City Councilmen Jeremiah Ellison and Phillipe Cunningham.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department. Say it with me. Dismantle. The. Minneapolis. Police. Department.”

Not surprisingly, after the carjacking, Sathanandan has taken on a less than progressive tone.

“I’m now part of the statistics. I wasn’t silent when I fought these men to save my life and my babies, and I won’t be silent now. We need to get illegal guns off of our streets, catch these young people who are running wild creating chaos across our city and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PROSECUTE THEM.”

Those who support law and order, and the value of holding criminals accountable, welcome Sathanandan’s change of position, and honestly wish her well. Perhaps something positive can come out of this tragic situation. It’s frustrating that tragedy must strike before eyes are opened to the value that strong unwavering support for law and order offers society.

Also notable is that this story comes on the heels of yet another attempt by many on the left to suggest “crime is on the decline” in Minneapolis. Just this past weekend, the Star Tribune ran a story, shared on social media by the mayor and others, that parsed out crime data in an attempt to persuade readers that crime in Minneapolis was on its heels.

The truth of the matter is that the crime data in Minneapolis doesn’t accurately quantify or qualify the crime problem in 2023. Crime today has taken on a randomness and heightened level of violence that we’ve never experienced in the past.

Throughout our history, it has been relatively easy to avoid becoming a crime victim in Minneapolis, by avoiding certain areas and avoiding certain activities at certain times of the day. All of that is out the window in 2023, and it has become a reality that doing things that have been traditionally safe like pulling into your garage with your children, walking your dog, going to the grocery store, or doing yard work is just not as safe as it once was — and no chart can change that.

Many DFLers and other advocates of the public safety reform movement have been effective in their efforts to undermine law enforcement and pressure criminal justice system partners to reduce accountability for criminal offenders. Their efforts have brought about a recruitment and retention crisis in local law enforcement, which can accurately be described as defunding the police through attrition.

The Minneapolis Police Department is down nearly 300 officers since 2020 and continues to lose more officers each month than it can attract to the job. That is an unsustainable situation that makes the kind of attack Sathanandan suffered more likely to happen to others — and the fault lies squarely on the shoulders of those who have been so determined to undermine law enforcement.

Of course, the people who bear the brunt of violent crime in our state aren’t often DFL leaders, they are people of color living in some the worst situations our state has to offer. Their plight never seems to be enough to counter the war on cops effort. Perhaps Sathanandan’s attack will serve as a catalyst for those on the left to place more value on strong law and order strategies. Time will tell.

The U.S. Justice Department has disrupted a multimillion-dollar shipment of crude oil by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a designated foreign terrorist organization, that was bound for another country.

This marks the first-ever criminal resolution involving a company that violated sanctions by facilitating the illicit sale and transport of Iranian oil, and over 980,000 barrels of contraband crude oil have been seized.

The operating company of the vessel carrying the contraband cargo, Empire Navigation, agreed to cooperate and transport the Iranian oil to the United States, and the contraband cargo is now the subject of a civil forfeiture action in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

On April 19, Suez Rajan Limited pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and was sentenced to three years of corporate probation and a fine of almost $2.5 million. Empire Navigation agreed to cooperate and transport the Iranian oil to the United States, incurring the significant expenses associated with the voyage.

The U.S. began unloaded the cargo from the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, Suez Rajan, last month via ship-to-ship transfer after waiting two-and-a-half months off the coast of Texas to discharge. The U.S. seized the tanker in April while it was en route to China, prompting Iran to take the Chevron-chartered tanker, Advantage Sweet. Iran has threatened retaliation against any company unloading Iranian oil from the seized tanker.

The U.S. filed a forfeiture complaint alleging that the oil on a vessel is subject to forfeiture under US terrorism and money laundering laws.

The complaint alleges that multiple entities affiliated with Iran’s IRGC and IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) were involved in a scheme to sell and transport Iranian oil to a foreign customer through ship-to-ship transfers, falsified documents, and other means, while attempting to disguise the origin of the oil. The charterer of the vessel used the U.S. financial system to facilitate the transportation of the oil.

According to the complaint, oil profits are used to support the IRGC and the IRGC-QF, designated foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S., and facilitate money laundering. The profits also support activities such as weapons proliferation, terrorism, and human rights abuses.

Abdulkadir Nur Salah, 36, of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, federal programs bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering. Abdulkadir Salah was an owner and operator of Safari Restaurant, a site that received more than $16 million in fraudulent Federal Child Nutrition Program funds.

Ahmed Sharif Omar-Hashim, 39, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, federal programs bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering. Omar-Hashim created a company called Olive Management Inc., a site that received approximately $5 million in fraudulent Federal Child Nutrition Program funds.

Abdihakim Ali Ahmed, 36, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, federal programs bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering. Abdihakim Ahmed created ASA Limited LLC, a site that received approximately $5 million in fraudulent Federal Child Nutrition Program funds.

Two men arrested under Official Secrets Act

Two men have been arrested under the Official Secrets Act, police have confirmed, amid claims a parliamentary researcher was spying for China.

The Sunday Times reported one of the men, in his 20s, was a researcher with links to several Tory MPs.

He and another man in his 30s were arrested in March, the Met confirmed.

On Sunday morning, No 10 said Rishi Sunak had expressed concerns about Chinese interference to a senior official from China.

A spokesperson said the prime minister had met Chinese Premier Li Qiang during a G20 summit in India, and "conveyed his significant concerns about Chinese interference the UK's parliamentary democracy".

Chinese President Xi Jinping is not attending the summit.

The arrested man is alleged to have had links to security minister Tom Tugendhat and foreign affairs committee chairwoman Alicia Kearns, among others.

Several other government sources declined to comment on security matters.

The Metropolitan Police said: "A man in his 30s was arrested at an address in Oxfordshire and a man in his 20s was arrested at an address in Edinburgh.

"Searches were also carried out at both the residential properties, as well as at a third address in east London."

Both men were taken to a south London police station, and were subsequently released on police bail until a date in early October, it said.

The Met's Counter Terrorism Command, which oversees espionage-related offences, is investigating.

What is this person doing? In 2012, an annular eclipse of the Sun was visible over a narrow path that crossed the northern Pacific Ocean and several western US states. In an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is too far from the Earth to block out the entire Sun, leaving the Sun peeking out over the Moon's disk in a ring of fire. To capture this unusual solar event, an industrious photographer drove from Arizona to New Mexico to find just the right vista. After setting up and just as the eclipsed Sun was setting over a ridge about 0.5 kilometers away, a person unknowingly walked right into the shot. Although grateful for the unexpected human element, the photographer never learned the identity of the silhouetted interloper. It appears likely that the person is holding a circular device that would enable them to get their own view of the eclipse. The shot was taken at sunset on 2012 May 20 at 7:36 pm local time from a park near Albuquerque. Next month, on October 14, a different narrow swath across North and South America will be exposed to a different annular solar eclipse, if the sky is clear. Simultaneously, cloud-free observers almost anywhere on either continent will be able to see a partial solar eclipse.

Democrats are testing the waters for a national gun grab. On Friday in New Mexico, the governor, a Second Amendment foe, tried to take legal guns away from one of her cities. Flashback: NM Governor Michelle Grisham Caught Using Taxpayer Money to Pay for Her Groceries, Whiskey and Tequila

In March of 2020 New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham locked down her state due to the coronavirus threat. New Mexico was ranked 39th out of the 50 states in coronavirus cases at that time.

But after Grisham locked down the state she made a private call to her favorite jewelry store to make a purchase. Of course, she was able to do this because she is the Democrat governor.

But she got caught and started changing her story.

Then in 2021 the far left governor was caught using taxpayer money to pay for groceries, whiskey and tequila.

Records show Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham spent nearly $13,500 over a six-month period in 2020 on items such as groceries, dry cleaning and alcohol, the Sante Fe New Mexican reported.

The booze spending included a purchase in September of more than $200 for five bottles of tequila, two bottles of vodka, two bottles of Merlot and single bottles of whiskey and gin, the report said.

In the same report, the newspaper disclosed that Grisham was hosting in-person staff meetings at the governor’s mansion at the same time that she was urging the public against mixing households in order to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

About half the $13,500 went toward food for the governor’s Cabinet members and staffers during those meetings, Grisham spokesman Tripp Stelnicki told The Associated Press. moar

A seven-year-old girl has found a 2.95-carat golden brown diamond in a state park in Arkansas.

The girl, Aspen Brown, was celebrating her birthday on September 1 at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, when she made the shocking discovery.

According to a press release from the park, “Brown’s find is the second-largest registered by a park guest this year, topped only by a 3.29-carat brown diamond discovered in March.”

“A contracted company dug a 150-yard trench in August to help manage erosion on the north side of the search area,” said Caleb Howell, park superintendent. “Several tons of unsearched diamond-bearing material were exposed and it’s very possible that this diamond and others were uncovered as a result. “

The park explained that Brown was at the park with her father and grandmother when they made their way to the north side of the 37.5-acre diamond search area.

To better understand the mechanisms involved in TBI-induced inflammation, we examined the nature of macrophages responding to TBI in mice. In this model, brain macrophages were increased >20-fold the day after injury and >77-fold four days after injury in the ipsilateral hemisphere compared with sham controls. TBI macrophage subsets were identified by using a reporter mouse strain (YARG) that expresses eYFP from an IRES inserted at the 3′ end of the gene for arginase-1 (Arg1), a hallmark of alternatively activated (M2) macrophages. One day after TBI, 21±1.5% of ipsilateral brain macrophages expressed relatively high levels of Arg1 as detected by YFP, and this subpopulation declined thereafter. Arg1+ cells localized with macrophages near the TBI lesion. Gene expression analysis of sorted Arg1+ and Arg1- brain macrophages revealed that both populations had profiles that included features of conventional M2 macrophages and classically activated (M1) macrophages. The Arg1+ cells differed from Arg1- cells in multiple aspects, most notably in their chemokine repertoires. Thus, the macrophage response to TBI initially involves heterogeneous polarization towards at least two major subsets.

There is a great clinical need to identify the underlying mechanisms, as well as related biomarkers, and treatment targets, for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Neuroinflammation is a central pathophysiological feature of TBI. NLRP3 inflammasome activity is a necessary component of the innate immune response to tissue damage, and dysregulated inflammasome activity has been implicated in a number of neurological conditions. This paper introduces the NLRP3 inflammasome and its implication in the pathogenesis of neuroinflammatory-related conditions, with a particular focus on TBI. Although its role in TBI has only recently been identified, findings suggest that priming and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome are upregulated following TBI. Moreover, recent studies utilizing specific NLRP3 inhibitors have provided further evidence that this inflammasome is a major driver of neuroinflammation and neurobehavioral disturbances following TBI. In addition, there is emerging evidence that circulating inflammasome-associated proteins may have utility as diagnostic biomarkers of neuroinflammatory conditions, including TBI. Finally, novel and promising areas of research will be highlighted, including the potential involvement of the NLRP3 inflammasome in mild TBI, how factors such as biological sex may affect NLRP3 activity in TBI, and the use of emerging biomarker platforms. Taken together, this review highlights the exciting potential of the NLRP3 inflammasome as a target for treatments and biomarkers that may ultimately be used to improve TBI management.

I’m one of those who believes that what stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Sometimes, that good guy is a police officer, and sometimes, the good guy is a civilian. Leftists claim that the good guys’ contribution is so inconsequential that it doesn’t justify honoring citizens’ Second Amendment to keep and bear arms. New Mexico governor Michelle Grisham certainly agrees with that viewpoint.
