Americans are sick and tired of hearing that the economy is going ‘just fine’ when they continue to face major challenges to make ends meet every month. The cost of food is still soaring, gas prices jumped to an eight-month high this month, rent and housing costs are taking an even larger share of people’s monthly payments, utilities are more expensive, and somehow we’re still expected to have money left to save for emergencies and our futures at the end of every month. That seems too much to ask for many struggling families. There’s no way everything is ‘just fine’ when the biggest part of our population is going into debt to be able to cover their basic needs while over 30 million people have fallen below the poverty line. No matter what the media or government officials say, what we’re facing on a daily basis is far more real than their numbers and projections about the economy.

They say inflation is going down, but many of us are still seeing the cost of groceries hit new highs everytime we visit the store. We’re paying more for our houses, our rents, our cars, and virtually everything we consume. If that’s what a normal economy looks like, then we’re in far more trouble than we all imagined. Wheather they want to admit it or not, we’re on the middle of a devastating economic downturn, and our population is deeply hurting from it. The most important indicators debunk anyone who says the U.S. economy is in the right direction. For example, last month, employers added just 221,000 jobs, the smallest gain in two and half years. Job openings have also dropped to the lowest level since May 2021.

So far this year, several large companies have announced mass layoffs, such as 3M, which conducted 6,000 job cuts; while Disney slashed 7,000 jobs, Amazon laid-off 18,000 workers, Meta eliminated 11,000 positions, Google reduced its workforce by 6% or 12,000 jobs, and Walgreens just announced that 16% of its staff members will face lay-offs in the coming months. New Morning Consult data finds that Americans are deeply concerned about widespread job losses, with 75% citing those worries in May 2023. The report also revealed that nearly 2 in 5 U.S. adults are concerned about losing their own job, including 17% of baby boomers, 45% of Gen Xers, 56% of millennials, and 52% of Gen Zers.

Meanwhile, from January 2020 to January 2023, the number of job openings for middle-income positions fell by almost 10 percentage points, according to The Pew Research Center. While in early 2020, nearly 25% of job openings offered annual salaries between $58,000 and $99,000, by January this year, only 15% of open positions offered the same pay. Meanwhile, 35% of open jobs offer upper-income salaries of $100,000 or more. Typically, these positions are filled only by high-skilled professionals and college-educated Americans. In contrast, half of open positions in 2023 are for low-wage jobs. Today, we compiled several numbers that prove conditions are getting harder for American workers as the cost of living crisis continues to accelerate.

Deadly cargo ship fire still burning on vessel carrying 500 electric vehicles in North Sea

A fire on a cargo ship carrying more than 3,500 new vehicles was still burning Thursday in the North Sea a day after the Dutch coast guard said one crew member had died in the blaze. The company operating the cargo ship, K Line, was quoted by the Reuters news agency Friday as saying almost 500 of the vehicles on the stricken vessel, the Freemantle Highway car carrier, were battery electric vehicles (EVs).

The Dutch coast guard said Thursday that the cause of the fire was unclear and that only about 25 of the vehicles on the ship were EVs, but in the audio of an emergency call released by Dutch broadcaster RTL, someone can be heard saying "the fire started in the battery of an electric car."

The present invention is directed to a communication system wherein ultrasonic signals can be used as carriers to efficiently produce high fidelity, wide audio bandwidth sound. Exemplary embodiments rely on the airborne transport of an inaudible ultrasonic carrier directly into the ear canal of a user, such that the non-linearities within the ear itself can be exploited to demodulate the ultrasonic carrier without producing audible sounds at the input to the user's ear. The non-linearities of the ear itself, in conjunction with the human brain's perception of audible frequencies generated in response to ultrasonic stimulation, are relied upon to detect audio information. The ultrasound-to-audio-sound conversion in the confined volume of the inner ear appears to be constant pressure, as opposed to constant velocity, such that all frequencies of the audio bandwidth (including low frequency bass signals) are produced with comparable sound intensity.

Ukrainian church rejects Zelensky’s ‘new’ Christmas

The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church says it will keep celebrating the holiday on January 7

The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) has said it will not follow President Vladimir Zelensky’s order to mark Christmas Day on December 25, in line with the Western Christian tradition.

On Friday, Zelensky signed a decree aligning the celebrations of one of the main Christian holidays with the Gregorian calendar.Ukraine has historically marked the birth of Christ on January 7, in accordance with the Julian calendar.

Metropolitan Kliment, spokesperson for the UOC – which has historic ties with the Russian Orthodox Church – told the Strana.ua website on Saturday: “It’s absolutely guaranteed that the vast majority of Ukrainians of various religious denominations will celebrate the next Christmas the same way they did before. Of course, one could have hoped that those people and their traditions would be respected. But we’ve got what we’ve got.”

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, voted to cancel the annual public holiday on January 7.

Kliment argued that politicians who justified moving Christmas to December 25 “as a departure from the Russian tradition… had inaccurate or incomplete information.”

Marking Christmas onJanuary 7 “does not follow the Russian tradition, but the calendar tradition of the Church in Jerusalem, where the holiest shrines of Christianity are located. There, all the main holidays of the Orthodox Church are, to this day, celebrated in line with the Julian calendar,” he said.

The custom ofmarking birth of Christ on December 25 originated in Turkish Orthodox Christianity, the cleric explained. “It’s hard for me to say why the members of parliament decided that the Turkish traditions are closer to the Ukrainian people than those of Jerusalem and Bethlehem,” he added.

Ukraine has been experiencing religious tensions for years, with two entities claiming to be the country’s true Orthodox Church. Zelensky’s government recognises the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which was created in 2014 and is considered to be schismatic by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Since the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Kiev’s authorities and activists have been seizing UOC’s places of worship and handing them over to the government-backed OCU. Among other things, OCU monks have been evicted from the country’s holiest Orthodox site, the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

One of the leaders of thecanonical church, Metropolitan Pavel, was placed under house arrest in April on accusations of harboring pro-Russian sentiment.Earlier this month, a judge ruled that he should be put in custody.

The non-canonical OCU has already confirmed that it is moving Christmas celebrations to December 25, and entirely switching to the Gregorian calendar.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed that Australia has raised the case of Julian Assange’s continued prosecution, but declared thatWashington will not stop trying to extradite the former WikiLeaks boss and try him for espionage.

Speaking alongside Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Brisbane on Saturday, Blinken said that while he understands “the concerns and views of Australians,” Assange’s alleged actions “risked very serious harm to our national security, to the benefit of our adversaries, and put named human sources at grave risk – grave risk – of physical harm, and grave risk of detention.”

Assange, he said, was “charged with very serious criminal conduct” and had allegedly taken part in “one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of our country.”

An Australian citizen, Julian Assange is currently being held in London’s Belmarsh Prison. He is fighting extradition to the US, where he faces 17 charges under the Espionage Act and potentially a 175-year prison sentence. Human-rights and press-freedom activists have demanded his release, citing his deteriorating mental and physical health, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in May that he was “working through diplomatic channels” to press the US into dropping the case.

The charges against Assange stem from his publication of classified material obtained by whistleblowers, including Pentagon documents detailing alleged US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables exposing the US’ efforts to – among other things – spy on its allies and influence foreign elections.

While Assange did not personally steal these documents, he is nevertheless being prosecuted for espionage. He and his supporters argue that WikiLeaks’ publication of this material is protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

“We have made clear our view that Mr Assange’s case has dragged on for too long,”Foreign Minister Wong said on Saturday.“We’ve said that publicly and you would anticipate that that reflects also the position we articulate in private.”

The extradition from Britain to the US of Assange, who is no 52, was approved in 2020 by then-UK Home Secretary Priti Patel. He lodged his final appeal against the decision in June, after all eight grounds of a previous appeal were rejected by a High Court judge.

Responding to Blinken’s comments on Saturday, Assange’s brother, Gabriel Shipton, said that it is now up to Prime Minister Albanese to make a public appeal for Assange’s freedom during his upcoming visit to the US.

Ukraine using North Korean rockets – FT

The munitions were allegedly “seized” from a ship by a “friendly” country and given to Kiev, the British paper claims

Ukrainian forces have been firing North Korean rockets at Russian positions in Donbass, the Financial Times has claimed.

In its report on Friday, the British newspaper said the munitions in question were shown to its journalist by the Kiev troops operating a Soviet-era Grad multiple rocket launcher near the Russian-held city of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut).

According to the outlet, the markings on the rockets suggested they had been manufactured by Pyongyang in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Ukrainians said the projectiles were “very unreliable” and sometimes did “crazy things.”However, they added that they were still happy to have them amid ammunition shortages experienced by Kiev’s forces. “We need every rocket we can get,” one of the soldiers remarked.

When asked about the origins of the munitions, the troops told the FT that North Korean rockets had been “seized” from a ship by a “friendly” country and handed over to Ukraine.

Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, whom the paper also contacted, suggested that the munitions may have been captured from the Russian military.

However, the paper doubted his claim, saying that “it is highly unlikely that North Korea would provide Ukraine directly with the munitions as Pyongyang has been supportive”of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

Last fall, the New York Times and several other outlets published the findings of a US intelligence assessment, which claimed that Moscow had been purchasing artillery shells and rockets from Pyongyang.

When asked about the issue by journalists at the time, Pentagon spokesman BrigadierGeneral Pat Ryder said "We do have indications that Russia has approached North Korea to request ammunition.” In an interview with CNN, Russian Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizhov rejected those claims, suggesting that the whole story had been invented by the Western media.

The report in the Financial Times comes in the wake of a visit to Pyongyang by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu. During the trip, Shoigu touted the “rich history of cooperation” between North Korea and Russia, expressing confidence that those ties would be boosted further. The defense minister held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and other top officials, inspected Pyongyang’s most advanced weapons, and attended a military parade.

I saw this interview surface and just the headline was enough to pique my interest; so, I watched it, and I’m glad I did.

The interview between James O’Keefe and Robert Kennedy Jr is very interesting {Direct Rumble Link Here}. O’Keefe is a good interviewer, with questions that are not ordinarily asked, and generates a depth in response not often seen. The interview highlights the perspective of Robert Kennedy Jr. as the candidate looks at the total administrative state now assembled in the U.S. government.

I don’t want to lead viewers/readers too much, because the times we are living in require an investment of self in order to evaluate information. However, what RFK Jr says toward the end of the interview, about his ability to win the election is very interesting. The interview is 48 minutes, and it held my interest the entire time.

Quizzically, RFK Jr doesn’t touch on Joe Biden as a political opponent. Kennedy doesn’t mention Biden, nor does he mention the Democrat nomination. Instead, Kennedy jumps immediately to the general election and frames his ability to defeat Donald Trump.

There’s something revelatory about the psyche of a person when asked a question in a comfortable environment and how they respond. I’m not exactly sure what is driving RFK Jr here, but what I can say with some confidence is that he sees the Trump movement as the tribe he can influence.

In Iowa last night I noticed that a little known, failed former Congressman, Will Hurd, is ridiculously running for President. He quit Congress because it would have been impossible for him to win in his district - he did a really bad job. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday said that the United States believes Russia’s defence minister is in North Korea to secure supplies of weapons to aid the stalled invasion of Ukraine.

Following Sergei Shoigu’s arrival on a rare trip to Pyongyang, Blinken said that Russia is scrambling to buy arms from allies across the world.

“I strongly doubt he’s there on holiday,” Blinken told reporters in Australia.

“We’re seeing Russia desperately looking for support, for weapons, wherever it can find them to continue to prosecute its aggression against Ukraine,” he said.

“We see that in North Korea, we see that as well with Iran, which has provided many drones to Russia that it’s using to destroy civilian infrastructure and killed civilians in Ukraine.”

While in North Korea, Shoigu met the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, in what Pyongyang’s state media described as “a friendly talk.”

Russia, a historic ally of North Korea, is one of a handful of nations with which Pyongyang maintains friendly relations.

Worldcoin crypto already under scrutiny in Europe

Less than a week after its launch, the Worldcoin crypto project of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is already under scrutiny by European regulators over its reliance on an eye scan to verify a user’s identity, France’s data protection agency said Friday.

Worldcoin’s launch on Monday comes as the cryptocurrency industry is suffering hard times after the spectacular collapse of FTX and various legal cases against the sector’s biggest players.

Using eye scans, it tries to solve one of the main challenges facing the crypto industry: a level of anonymity so high that makes it vulnerable to scams and spam bots — which AI threatens to make exponentially worse.

But Worldcoin’s collection of biometric data could run afoul of strict data privacy rules in Europe.

“Worldcoin has begun to collect data in France… which seems questionable as does the conservation of biometric data,” France’s CNIL data regulator told AFP.

After conducting an initial review, CNIL said it identified its counterpart in the German state of Bavaria as the lead agency in Europe to conduct a probe into Worldcoin, and said it supports their investigation.

Worldcoin in fact began operating in June in Germany, which is the home country of co-founder Alex Blania.

Bavaria’s data protection agency had no immediate comment when contacted by AFP on Friday.

With its cryptocurrency and identification system Worldcoin aims to create the “world’s largest identity and financial public network,” according to its website.

Altman and Blania said earlier this week in a letter posted to Twitter, which is being renamed X, that the Worldcoin offers “a reliable solution for distinguishing humans from AI online while preserving privacy”.

This will in turn enable Worldcoin as a blockchain-based technology to drastically increase economic opportunity and enable democratic processes.

Blockchains are distributed databases that facilitate the verification and traceability of transactions.

They can offer lower costs and faster data transfer while ensuring secure transactions, although the most famous blockchain that powers the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, is notorious for being slow and expensive as it requires huge computer processing power to validate transactions as part of its system to reward processors with new bitcoins.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Potts, who until weeks ago led the service’s Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, or PEO C3T, died at the scene near 3600 Old Level Road in Havre de Grace, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and media reports.

Potts was the only person in the single-engine plane when it went down in a field July 25. No one on the ground was hurt. Dozens of first-responders were dispatched to search for the wreckage, according to the Level Volunteer Fire Company. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the matter.

Potts, who grew up in Kentucky, planned to retire soon after nearly four decades of military service. He was commissioned as an Army aviation second lieutenant in 1986 and later served in operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He was also an attack helicopter platoon leader in Germany.

Potts most recently helmed PEO C3T, tasked with developing, deploying and supporting battlefield communications gear. Before that, he led PEO Soldier, which deals in everyday equipment, such as uniforms, body armor, night-vision devices and guns. Both roles were considered critical to protecting troops and modernizing the way the Army fights.

Maj. Gen. Robert Collins, who led PEO C3T prior to Potts, in June 2022 described the Kentuckian as “a truly a strategic and critical thinker, a team builder.”

“He understands the modernization instrument and how it runs,” Collins said at the time, “and he certainly understands that the centerpiece of our modernization is our soldiers.”

A 45-year-old man exited the mall along with his female passenger, only to find his Ford truck was missing. The owner approached his truck and displaying a pistol ordered the 34-year-old male driver and the thief's 25-year-old female passenger to step outside and take a seat on the pavement. Two minutes after police were called, the male suspect drew a pistol from his waistband and shot the truck's owner.

The owner returned fire, hitting and killing the shooter and critically wounding the shooter's companion. Clarifying the account at a press conference held at the mall, San Antonio police chief William McManus said, "The bad guy is the one dead, yes. The driver of the stolen vehicle is deceased, shot by the owner of the stolen vehicle."

The Pentagon is investigating what it has called a “critical compromise” of communications across 17 Air Force facilities by one of its engineers, according to a search warrant obtained by Forbes. The document also details evidence of a possible breach of FBI communications by the same employee, who worked at the Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee.

The government had been tipped off by a base contractor that the 48-year-old engineer had taken government radio technologies home, effectively stealing them for his own use, according to the warrant, which alleged the amount of pilfered equipment was worth nearly $90,000.

At least six were killed and over 20 wounded on the evening of 27 July after a massive explosion near the Shrine of Sayyida Zaynab on the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus, coming just one day ahead of Ashura.

“A woman was killed, and her three children were injured by the explosion of a bobby-trapped car which hit a site in front of Sayedat Al-Sham hotel in Sayeda Zeinab city in Rif Dimashq,” the opposition-linked war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), cited an official as saying.

Photos and videos on social media showed chaos on the streets as people carried the wounded.

The explosion came just a day ahead of the tenth day of Ashura commemorations, where Shia Muslims remember the death of the Islamic Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali and the captivity of the Prophet’s granddaughter Sayyida Zaynab in Damascus.

The days leading up to Ashura are a time of mourning, and people make daily visits for prayer at the Sayyida Zaynab shrine.

The brutal attack also comes in the aftermath of regional normalization with the Syrian government, which has stood in the way of Washington’s ambitions in Syria.

Throughout the war on Syria, which began in 2011, western-backed, sectarian-driven extremist groups carried out various bombings and suicide attacks at Sayyida Zaynab shrine.

In 2016, two bombings at the shrine took place within one month of each other, one in January and the other in February. The death toll of both combined attacks was not less than 200.

TEXAS, USA — Editor's note: This story was originally published in the Texas Tribune here. WFAA reached out to U.S. Capitol Police about the potential for an office in Texas. Their response is included in the Tribune story below.

In response to increasing threats against members of Congress, the U.S. Capitol Police is considering opening a regional field office in Texas.

Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger announced the plans at a joint oversight hearing of the Capitol Police Board, describing a 300% increase in threats to members of Congress over the past seven years.

In addition to an office in Texas, the agency plans to open field offices in Milwaukee and Boston, Manger told the committee Wednesday. A Texas location has not yet been determined, a department spokesperson said.

WFAA reached out to U.S. Capitol Police and were given the following statement:

"USCP is exploring options of opening field offices in regions across the country, to include Texas. This is to ensure our department resources are adequately dispersed to safeguard Members of Congress and to investigate threats when in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere. The location and plans for these field offices are still being discussed. These regional locations will have a small number of agents housed in local and state fusion centers and will be investigating threats against Members of Congress."

The Capitol Police department, which is responsible for protecting Congress and its members, opened its first field offices in Florida and California after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. The offices have helped his officers respond to threats more quickly and efficiently, Manger said.

“Due to the increased threat environment, our protective responsibilities have increased, requiring additional protection details, increased coverage of CODELs [official travel by members of Congress] and field hearings, as well as other enhancements to our current protective details,” he said in his written testimony to the committee.

According to the police department, the new offices will “ensure our department resources are adequately dispersed to safeguard Members of Congress and to investigate threats when in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.”

Recent attacks on lawmakers, their families and staffers have made threats more visible.

“We had, tragically, a Senate staffer repeatedly stabbed in broad daylight here in Washington, D.C., just a couple blocks from this hearing room,” U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said during the hearing, raising concerns about the “explosion of threats of violence against members of both parties.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked in their California home last October, and U.S. Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minnesota, was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in February.

Manger said his agency is addressing threats by expanding intelligence-gathering operations, increasing the number of investigative agents and working with state and local law enforcement.

“We need to do a better job at protecting members when they’re home, their families,” Manger said. “We’ve got to make sure that we’ve got security measures in place in home district offices, in homes, so that it raises everybody’s level of security.”

Tennessee Officials Disclose New Information on Death of Former Gov. Larry Hogan Official Roy McGrath: A Simultaneous Self-inflicted Gunshot and FBI Fire

Roy McGrath, a former high-ranking aide to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan who had fallen from grace, died from a headshot wound inflicted simultaneously by himself and an FBI agent, Tennessee prosecutors confirmed.

The Gateway Pundit reported on March 14th, U.S. District Court Judge Deborah Boardman issued an arrest warrant for Roy McGrath who previously served as the Chief of Staff for Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

The arrest warrant stemmed from McGrath failing to appear in Federal Court on Monday to face fraud and theft charges.

Roy McGrath is facing an 8-count federal indictment.

“Charges include wire fraud, including securing a $233,648 severance payment equal to one year of salary as the head of Maryland Environmental Service. He also faces fraud and embezzlement charges connected to roughly $170,000 in expenses. McGrath has pleaded not guilty.” – Fox News reported.

The FBI raided McGrath’s home two days after he failed to appear in court, but lawmakers found no sign of him. McGrath’s wife was home at the time of the raid.

After being a fugitive for over two weeks, the FBI placed McGrath on their Most Wanted List.

Per its site, the FBI offers a $10,000 reward for any information leading to McGrath’s arrest.

On April 4, McGrath was found by authorities in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area and was killed during a confrontation with federal agents.

It was initially unclear whether McGrath’s fatal injury was self-inflicted or came during an exchange with FBI agents.

While average Ukrainians suffer amid NATO’s proxy war against Russia, business is booming for the surrogate baby industry, which requires a steady supply of healthy but financially desperate women to lease their wombs to affluent foreigners.

Surrogates “have to be from poorer places than our clients,” explained the medical director of Kiev’s largest “baby factory.”

Ihor Pechonoha of the Swiss-based BioTexCom says the business model that has helped him build one of the most profitable surrogacy companies in the world is simple exploitation: “We are looking for women in the former Soviet republics because, logically, [the women] have to be from poorer places than our clients.”

It is no surprise then that BioTexCom has turned to Ukraine for an almost endless pool of young women willing to sell their wombs to ease their financial distress. Eight years of civil war followed by a proxy war between NATO nations and Russia has plunged Ukraine into economic disaster. As its citizens sank into poverty, the country swiftly emerged as the international epicenter for surrogacy, and now controls at least a quarter of the global market. With the rise of the burgeoning industry, a seedy medical underworld filled with patient abuse and corruption has taken root as well.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his team have actively encouraged the Western plunder of their war-torn country, inking an investment partnership with the global asset management firm Blackrock, stripping workers of labor protections, and handing state owned companies over to private firms.

But less attention has been paid to Ukraine’s surrogacy industry, which brought over $1.5 billion into the country’s economy in 2018 alone. Since then, the global market for surrogate babies has more than doubled. The industry was valued at over $14 billion last year, and it’s projected to grow by around 25% every year going forward, according to an analysis by Global Market Insights.

As more countries slam the door on the surrogacy industry, Western officials appear to be turning a blind eye to the abuse-ridden business flourishing in a deregulated, politically unstable Ukraine.

Emma Lamberton is a Master of International Development candidate at the University of Pittsburgh who published a paper in Princeton’s Journal of Public and International Affairs on the risks posed to Ukrainian women by the country’s surrogacy industry.

“The main concern of advocates on the ground in Ukraine is that legislators and even news organizations aren’t looking at this as a human rights violation,” Lamberton told The Grayzone.

Last year alone, 19 African countries applied for BRICS membership because they wanted completely new economic relations, Morozov revealed on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit.

After the US and the EU seized Russia’s forex reserves, the world realized that it is not only a “political weapon,” but an instrument of financial pressure on the external and internal policy of any country and any continent, according to Morozov. DARPA aims to develop an integrated end-to-end platform that uses nucleic acid sequences to halt the spread of viral infections in sixty days or less

Over the past several years, DARPA-funded researchers have pioneered RNA vaccine technology, a medical countermeasure against infectious diseases that uses coded genetic constructs to stimulate production of viral proteins in the body, which in turn can trigger a protective antibody response. As a follow-on effort, DARPA funded research into genetic constructs that can directly stimulate production of antibodies in the body.1,2 DARPA is now launching the Pandemic Prevention Platform (P3) program, aimed at developing that foundational work into an entire system capable of halting the spread of any viral disease outbreak before it can escalate to pandemic status. Such a capability would offer a stark contrast to the state of the art for developing and deploying traditional vaccines—a process that does not deliver treatments to patients until months, years, or even decades after a viral threat emerges.

“DARPA’s goal is to create a technology platform that can place a protective treatment into health providers’ hands within 60 days of a pathogen being identified, and have that treatment induce protection in patients within three days of administration. We need to be able to move at this speed considering how quickly outbreaks can get out of control,” said Matt Hepburn, the P3 Program Manager. “The technology needs to work on any viral disease, whether it’s one humans have faced before or not.”

Recent outbreaks of viral infectious diseases such as Zika, H1N1 influenza, and Ebola have cast into sharp relief the inability of the global health system to rapidly contain the spread of a disease using existing tools and procedures. State-of-the-art medical countermeasures typically take many months or even years to develop, produce, distribute, and administer. These solutions often arrive too late—if at all—and in quantities too small to respond to emerging threats. In contrast, the envisioned P3 platform would cut response time to weeks and stay within the window of relevance for containing an outbreak.

Key to this undertaking are nucleic-acid-based technologies—those that are centered on DNA and RNA—including some developed under DARPA’s Autonomous Diagnostics to Enable Prevention and Therapeutics (ADEPT) program. Using these tools, scientists can identify protective antibodies from recovering patients and then, through a biological version of reverse engineering, manufacture genetic constructs that, when delivered, can instruct an individual’s body to produce similar protective antibodies. Significant quantities of these nucleic acid “blueprints” can be rapidly manufactured compared to state-of-the-art antibody production methods.

Moscow does not want a conflict with the Western-led bloc but is ready for any outcome, Russian president says

Russia is “always ready for any scenario,”President Vladimir Putin told journalists on Saturday, commenting on a potential direct confrontation between the Russian and NATO militaries. The president was answering a question about recent near-collisions involving Russian and American aircraft in Syria.

“No one wants that,”the president added, pointing to the existing conflict-prevention lines that allow Russian and US officers to talk directly about “any crisis situation.” That fact that these lines still work shows that no side is interested in a conflict, he added.“If someone wants it – and that’s not us – then we’re ready,”Putin added.

The Russian military has reported a total of23 dangerous incidentsinvolving Russian aircraft and those of the US-led coalition since early 2023, said Admiral Oleg Gurinov, the head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria. Most incidents took place in July, he added.

In 11 cases the Russian pilots recorded being targetedwith Western aircraft-targeting systems. Such actions on the part of the US-led coalition led to the automatic engagement of onboard defense systems, which saw Russian aircraft releasing decoy flares, the admiral told journalists. (So is admitting 12 were the Russians targeting the US)

Moscow has also repeatedly warned Washington and its allies about the risks of a potential direct conflict between Russia and NATO, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Continued Western arms supplies to Kiev only extend the hostilities and make its Western backers engage in the conflict even deeper, Russia said.

The conflict between Moscow and Kiev cannot be resolved on the battlefield, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said

Conditions for negotiations to end the Ukrainian conflict will only worsen, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto predicted in Budapest on Friday.The two sides, he believes, wouldn’t be in a better position for talks than now.

At present, Moscow is prepared to seek a diplomatic solution to the crisis, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Kiev and its backers, including the US and NATO, are still refusing to enter such talks.

“There will be no better conditions for peace negotiations than the present,” Szijjarto told journalists on Friday following his meeting with the Turkish foreign minister, Hakan Fidan. “Yesterday’s conditions were better than today’s, and tomorrow’s conditions will be worse than today’s,” the Hungarian minister added.

Budapest still believes that “there is no [military] solution” for the conflict, Szijjarto said.

Hungary has emerged as one of the most active advocates of a negotiated solution to the ongoing conflict.

Hungarian officials, including Szijjarto and Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and peace deal in Ukraine, and have criticized the EU for sending arms to Kiev. Budapest has also been adamant that anti-Russia sanctions hurt Europe more than they hurt Moscow. In June, Orban told German tabloid Bild that a Ukrainian victory on the battlefield is “impossible.”

This week the prime minister also said thatKiev had virtually “run out of strength” and the only thing keeping Ukraine “alive” was Western financial assistance.

Moscow has repeatedly signaled that it is ready for peace talks with Ukraine. It has also blamed Kiev for the lack of progress in diplomacy, citing a decree signed last year by President Vladimir Zelensky that prohibits talks for as long as Russia’s Putin remains in power.

Last month the Ukrainian leader reiterated his stance, that talks with Moscow could only start after Russian forces withdraw from all Ukrainian territory within its 1991 borders, including Crimea. Russia has rejected such demands as unrealistic.

Speaking at the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg on Friday, Putin said that the ongoing conflict is rooted in threats posed to Russia’s security by NATO. Washington and its allies “reject negotiations on the issues of assuring equal security,” he added.

The heavy armor has stopped an attack by two tanks and several military vehicles, Russian media have said

A single Russian tank supported by artilleryhas stopped a Ukrainian attack that involvedaround a dozen armored equipment pieces, Russian media reported on Saturday. A video of the battle first appeared on some Telegram channels and was then posted by RIA Novosti.

The fighting took place in Zaporozhye Region, where the Ukrainian troops sought to assault Russian defensive positions, the news agency reported. Russia’s aerial reconnaissance detected a Ukrainian column moving towards the frontline. “We had an armor piece in this area,” a Russian unit commander told RIA Novosti, adding that thetank’s crew was ordered to intercept the enemy and “engaged in a battle.”

Footage purportedly showing the battle showed the Russian tank attacking the Ukrainian column moving along a road while using a tree belt area for cover. The tank’s crew can be seen actively maneuvering while constantly firing on the enemy. Retaliatory fire returned by the Ukrainian forces does not appear to have caused any significant damage to the Russian armor.

The tank managed to destroy a total of seven Ukrainian equipment pieces on its own, the unit commander said, adding that some other Ukrainian armor pieces were also hit by Russian anti-tank missile crews and artillery. The tank did not suffer any serious damage during the encounter, he added.

According to the Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Ukrainian column includedat least two tanks and five US-made MRAP M1224 MaxxPro vehicles. The Russian tank crew forced the Ukrainian group to enter a minefield, where some of their equipment pieces were blown up, the media outlet reported.

The battle came amid Kiev’s attempts to breach Russian defenses during its much-touted counteroffensive. The operation, which started on June 4, has failed to bring about significant changes on the battlefield, almost two months after it was launched.

Ukrainian troops have suffered heavy losses, including Western-supplied heavy armor, during their largely unsuccessful attacks on Russian defenses. According to Western media, Kiev’s backers have also been frustrated by the slow pace of the operation.

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that theUkrainian troops had already lost “almost a fifth of NATO kit”provided for their counteroffensive. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the difference between the losses of the two sides as “colossal.” Ukraine lost ten times more soldiers than Russia during the battle, he claimed.

The microscopic organism belongs to a previously-undiscovered species

Scientists in Russia have successfully revived a female roundworm that laid dormant in Siberia for 46,000 years. The worm sat in suspended animation for tens of thousands of years longer than any specimen studied to date, and began to have babies once thawed out.

The worm – a previously unknown species of soil nematode – was found in a soil sample from near the remote settlement of Chersky in northeastern Siberia, Russian Academy of Sciences researcher Anastasia Shatilovich wrote the current PLOS Genetics journal. Taken from40 meters below the surface, the soil had not thawed since the late Pleistocene period, between 45,839 and 47,769 years ago.

Shatilovich’s team managed to revive the nematode, which then began reproducing via a process calledparthenogenesis, which doesn't require a mate.

While scientists have long known that certain species can survive essentially indefinitely by switching off their metabolisms, they have previously only been able to revive soil nematodes frozen for several dozen years. Efforts to revive other species have proven more successful, with the previous record set in 2021, when ancient bdelloid rotifers, microscopic multicellular animals, were resurrected after 24,000 years in the Siberian permafrost.

The nematode is no longer alive, but Shatilovich and her team have raised 100 generations from its offspring.

“By adapting to cope with extreme conditions, such as permafrost, for short periods of time, the nematodes might have gained the potential to remain dormant over geological timescales,” read an announcement from PLOS Genetics.

Siberia’s frozen landscape alsohosts an unknown number of ancient viruses, one of which a team of researchers last year managed to revive after 48,500 years. Russia has warned that the continued thawing of the permafrost caused by climate change could unleash these dormant pathogens upon the world. Thawing soil that has been deeply frozen for centuries or even millenniacould still contain “some viable spores of ‘zombie’ bacteria and viruses,” Nikolay Korchunov, a senior Russian representative at the Arctic Council, told RT in 2021.

US President Joe Biden is following a“suicidal” course in Ukraine and may drag the US “stupidly into a confrontation” with Russia, acclaimed director Oliver Stone said during a recent podcast appearance.

Speaking on an episode of British commentator Russell Brand’s ‘Stay Free’ podcast released on Friday, Stone blamed the conflict in Ukraine on the "neoconservative movement who started the war in Iraq," and who still occupy prominent positions in Biden’s government.

“Biden is an old Cold Warrior, and he really hates the old Soviet Union which he confounds again with the Russian Federation, which is not communist,” Stone continued. “It seems that he’s dragging us stupidly into a confrontation with a power that is not going to give. This is [Russia’s] borders. This is their world. This is NATO going into Ukraine. This is a whole other story.”

Stone revealed that he voted for Biden in 2020, a decision that he now considers “a mistake.”

“I was thinking he was an old man now that he would calm down, that he would be more mellow and so forth,” Stone said, adding that he now sees “a man who maybe is not in charge of his own administration. Who knows?”

Back in 2016, Stone produced a documentary, ‘Ukraine on Fire’, explaining the role of the US in the 2014 overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically-elected president, Viktor Yanukovich. The film was highly critical of NATO’s eastward expansion, the US’ sponsorship of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, and the war on Donetsk and Lugansk waged by Yanukovich’s US-backed successor, Pyotr Poroshenko.

The Euromaidan coup, he told Brand, “was a very deep plan to penetrate the Russian Federation.”

Stone has repeatedly expressed this sentiment in the years since ‘Ukraine on Fire’ was released. “Since 2014, Ukraine was no longer neutral but anti-Russian, and that’s what disrupted the balance,” he told the Serbian daily Politika in December, adding that “every war has causes and consequences.”

Though Stone was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and voted for his Democratic opponent in 2020, his views on the Ukraine conflict align with Trump’s. The former president and 2024 Republican frontrunner has also named the same neoconservativesas key architects of the conflict, while accusing Biden of dragging the US into “a third world war.”

Ukraine wants its women back – deputy minister

Kiev is calling for refugees to return home as GDP slid almost 30% last year

Kiev encourages Ukrainian women who have fled the conflict-torn country to come back home, Deputy Economy Minister Tatyana Berezhnaya has said. Her comments came amid warnings that a disproportionate population exodus could have a devastating effect on the nation's economy.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg published on Monday, Berezhnaya said that “for me personally, victory is when Ukrainian families unite in Ukraine, not abroad.” The minister added that Kiev’s priority is “to make everything possible so that women with children come back to their husbands.”

Shortly after Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, Kiev announced a general mobilization, banning most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. This led to a large gender gap among Ukrainian adult refugees, with at least 70% of them being women, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Ukraine was already struggling with demographics even before the onset of the conflict, with a fertility rate of just 1.16 as of 2021, and the large-scale hostilities have only exacerbated the situation.

According to Alexander Isakov of Bloomberg Economics, if Kiev fails to persuade 2.8 million Ukrainian working-age women to return, it could cost the country 10% of its annual pre-conflict GDP. In the worst-case scenario, Ukraine will lose $20 billion a year, Bloomberg’s analysis claims.

Speaking to the outlet, Oleg Gorokhovsky, chief executive of Ukraine-based Monobank, stressed that women have a disproportionate impact on consumer demand as they are key decision-makers when it comes to buying household items.

“Without them, it will be super hard,” he added, commenting on prospects for the recovery of the Ukrainian economy that saw a 29.1% GDP decline in 2022. In 2023, it is projected to rebound by only 0.5%, according to the World Bank.

In total, according to UN data, more than six million Ukrainian refugees have fled the country, with the majority of them staying in European countries.

Berezhnaya’s comments contrast with the stance of authorities on the issue in the autumn of 2022. At the time, numerous Ukrainian officials urged their fellow citizens not to come back from abroad in winter, citing issues with power generation caused by recurring Russian strikes. Moscow intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in response to a deadly bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October 2022.
