Ukraine accuses Russia of blowing up Nova Kakhovka dam near Kherson

The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River, and called for people living downstream to evacuate in the face of catastrophic flooding.

As aerial footage circulated on social media, showing most of the dam wall washed away and a massive surge of water heading downstream, the army’s Southern Operational Command put up a Facebook post accusing “Russian occupation troops” of blowing up the hydroelectric dam.

The governor of the Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said about 16,000 people were in the “critical zone” on the Ukrainian-controlled right bank of the river. He said people were being evacuated for districts upstream of Kherson city and would be taken to bus to the city and then by train to Mykolaiv, and on to other Ukrainian cities.

The disaster happened on the second day of Ukrainian offensive operations likely to mark the early stages of a mass counteroffensive. It could affect any Ukrainian plans for an amphibious assault across the river.

Local Russian authorities in the town of Nova Kakhovka initially denied that anything had happened to the dam, then blamed the collapse on Ukrainian shelling. Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed official from the Kherson emergency services as saying the dam had collapsed from structural weakness under water pressure.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called an emergency meeting of his national security council on Tuesday in the wake of the disaster.

The areas most under threat of flooding are the islands along the course of the river downstream of Nova Kakhovka and much of the Russian-held left bank in southern Kherson. Earlier modelling of such a disaster suggested Kherson city would not take the brunt of the flood, but the harbour, the docklands and an island in the south of the city are likely to be inundated. It is unclear how many people would lose their homes.

There could be two further dramatic side-effects: the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant upstream could lose access to water for cooling as the reservoir drains away, and the water supply to Crimea could be severely affected.

Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka dam in a Russian-occupied part of southern Ukraine “in a panic”, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said on Tuesday.

“The occupiers blew up the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir in a panic – this is an obvious act of terrorism and a war crime, which will be evidence in an international tribunal,” Reuters reports it said in a statement on Telegram.

The British foreign secretary, James Cleverly, who is in Ukraine, blamed the destruction of the dam in southern Ukraine on Russia’s invasion.

“I’ve heard reports of the explosion on the dam and the risk of flooding. It’s too early to make any kind of meaningful assessment of the details. But it’s worth remembering that the only reason this is an issue at all is because of Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” he told Reuters.

“We’ll continue to assess the developing situation, but the best thing Russia could do now is withdraw their troops immediately.”

City of Novaya Kakhovka flooded after dam destruction – mayor

The water level in the Dnieper river has soared by more than 10 meters in the area of Novaya Kakhovka in Russia’s Kherson Region after a Ukrainian strike seriously damaged the local major hydroelectric dam, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Vladimir Leontyev, the head of the local administration, said the attack on Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam could result in the water level rising by as much as 12 meters, but that it is projected to return to normal within three days. “However, we have to survive these 72 hours,” he said.

He also said that local authorities have started to evacuate residents from riverside settlements, including the towns of Korsunska and Dniepriany as well as adjacent territories, with some300 buildings being vacated.

Andrey Alekseenko, the chair of Kherson Region’s administration, said that in total 14 settlements with acombined population of 22,000 peoplecould be flooded.

According to local officials, the key infrastructure was “destroyed as a result of a strike” by Ukrainian forces, which was described by Leontyev as a major “terrorist act.” Local emergency services said that14 out of 28 of the dam's spans had already collapsed, with more expected to follow suit.

However, Ukrainian officials denied responsibility, with Mikhail Podoliak, a top adviser to President Vladimir Zelensky, placing the blame on Moscow and accusing it of creating “the biggest environmental disaster in Europe in decades.”

Hydroelectric dam in Kherson partially destroyed – mayor

The Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam in Russia’s Kherson Region, located on the Dnieper River upstream from the city of Kherson, suffered significant damage on Tuesday morning, according to a local official and several videos shared on social media.

Theupper part of the key infrastructure was “destroyed as a result of a strike,” the mayor of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, confirmed to RIA Novosti. Whileseveral of the dam’s floodgates were damagedand unleashed an uncontrolled stream of water, the underwater structure itself withstood the attack, the official claimed.

Leontyev described the incident as a major “terrorist act” and said the water level downstream had risen by up to 2.5 meters, but added there was no need for evacuations thus far. He noted that the area has seen higher water levels during previous floods caused by heavy rainfall, but emphasized that local officials were focused on helping citizens as they prepare for a worst-case scenario.

“All services work in the city, all administration employees are in place. Electricity, gas, internet, communications are available,” the mayor continued.

The dam was reportedly struck around 2am local time. A video captured from a drone has circulated on Telegram purporting to show the aftermath of the attack, with water seen flowing through the breach.

Moscow has repeatedly blamed Kiev for numerous attacks on the Kakhovskaya dam, warning that a breach could result in the deaths of thousands of civilians. In turn, Ukraine has claimed that Russia was planning to blow up the dam in a false-flag operation aimed at framing Kiev for the flooding.

The persistent threat was cited as one of the main reasons for the evacuation of civilians from certain communities in the area last autumn, and an eventual pullout of Russian forces from the city of Kherson to the left bank of the Dnieper River.

Russian military and civilian officials, including acting Kherson Governor Vladimir Saldo, warned at the time that many areas in the region, including the city of Kherson, could be flooded if the Kakhovskaya dam were destroyed.

Kherson Region was officially declared part of Russiain early October, together with Zaporozhye Region and the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, after people in those territories overwhelmingly supported the move in referendums. Kiev and its Western backers have labeled the votes a “sham” and vowed to recapture the territories using any means necessary.

Ukraine considered blowing up the dam toparalyze Russian forceswho were defending the city of Kherson – andeven “conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates” – a former head of Ukraine’s Operational Command South, Major General Andrey Kovalchuk, admitted in an interview with the Washington Post in December.

This acknowledgement comes after literally years of primarily indy journalists and geopolitical commentators pointing out that yes indeed... Ukraine's military and paramilitary groups, especially those operating in the east since at least 2014, have a serious Nazi ideology problem. This has been exhaustively documented, again, going back years. But the report, which merely tries to downplay it as a "thorny issue" of Ukraine's "unique" "History" - suggests that the real problem for Western PR is fundamentally that it's being displayed so openly. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has boasted about his role in rebuilding his country’s military under the cover of the Minsk agreements. The documents were ostensibly intended to reconcile Kiev with eastern regions that had not endorsed the 2014 Western-backed coup.

“Do you know how many battalions I had north of Kiev when I became president? Zero. What about the state budget? Below zero. What about working tanks? A pittance,” the former leader said, describing the state of Ukraine nine years ago in an interview with Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper published on Monday.

Poroshenko took office in June 2014, as the post-coup Ukrainian government was attempting to quash a rebellion in Donetsk and Lugansk Regions with military force.The two Minsk agreementswere adopted with Poroshenko at the helm. They were supposed to de-escalate the conflict and reintegrate the regions into Ukrainian political systems under wide autonomy, but Kiev stonewalled their implementation.

Instead, Poroshenko told the newspaper that his government had opted for amilitary buildup with the help of foreign sponsors.

“==Immediately after the signing, I invited NATO instructors, bought weapons and vehicles. During my presidency we built an army,” he declared.

The former president insisted that this had allowed Ukraine to prepare for the current confrontation with Russia.Moscow cited Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk accords, its continued attacks on Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as NATO’s encroachment into Ukraine as key reasons for the launch of its military operation in February 2022.

Russian officials have claimed that the Minskagreements, which were mediated by France and Germany, werenegotiated in bad faith. Former French President Francois Hollande and ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel have since confirmed that the deals were intended to buy time for Kiev.

Poroshenko suffered a landslide defeat to Vladimir Zelensky, the current president, in the 2019 election. The comedian-turned-politicianpromised to reverse his predecessor’s bellicose policiesand reconcile with Donbass. However, Zelensky performed a U-turn after coming to power, as extremist nationalist forces objected to any attempts to negotiate.

In the interview, Poroshenko endorsed the opinion of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who argued last week thatMinsk and Moscow should have “resolved” the Ukrainian situation in 2014-2015, instead of pursuing diplomacy. Poroshenko implied that his government would have been toppled in that scenario.

The attack on the Novaya Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Russia’s Kherson Region qualifies as a war crime, European Council President Charles Michel has claimed. He insisted that Russia was responsible for the incident.

“Shocked by the unprecedented attack of the Nova Kakhovka dam,” Michel wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “The destruction of civilian infrastructure clearly qualifies as a war crime – we will hold Russia and its proxies accountable.”

Michel said he would raise the issue at the June meeting of the European Council and would propose more assistance to the flooded areas. (This territory is not in the EU, nor is Ukraine, so they will be funding a Russia territory, great idea. Virtue signaling for attention.)

The power plant, which is located on the Dnieper River upstream from the city of Kherson, suffered significant damage on Tuesday morning. Novaya Kakhovka Mayor Vladimir Leontyev claimed that the upper part of the dam and its floodgates had been destroyed as a result of a series of overnight strikes by Ukrainian forces.

The damage has led to the release of an uncontrolled flow of water which now threatens to flood up to 80 settlements in the region, Leontyev said, adding that several areas are without electricity. He also warned of problems with water supplies to the Crimean Peninsula.

The mayor described the extent of the destruction at the power plant as“very serious” and cautioned that it could be beyond repair. Efforts to restore it may effectively involve rebuilding it from scratch, he added.

Leontyev, who branded the incident a major “terrorist act,” alsonoted that the facility had repeatedly come under Ukrainian shellingthroughout the past year. Kiev’s forces have allegedly targeted the dam’s turbines, only one of which was working at the time of Tuesday’s attack, according to the mayor.

Moscow has frequently accused Kiev of attacking the dam and has warned on numerous occasions that a breach could result in the deaths of thousands of civilians. Ukraine, however, has claimed that Russia was planning to blow up the facility in a false-flag operation aimed at framing Kiev.

Kherson Region was officially declared part of Russia in early October, together with Zaporozhye Region and the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, after the local populations overwhelmingly supported the move in referendums. Kiev and its Western backers have labeled the votes a “sham,” and Ukraine has vowed to recapture the territories using any means necessary.

Special counsel Jack Smith was in the room when Mike Pence testified before a federal grand jury investigating Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, CNN reports.

The former Vice President testified for more than five hours last week, according to the report, which cites three sources with knowledge of the events.

Pence and Smith interacted at the courthouse in an exchange a source described as “respectful.”

Pence was expected to testify for the first time about direct conversations he had with Trump ahead of Jan. 6, when the former president reportedly pressured Pence to overturn the 2020 election results, including a private call on the morning of Jan. 6, the report said.

Smith is leading the investigation into efforts to overturn the election.

His appearance, according to CNN “is the first known time the special counsel has attended a grand jury proceeding in the investigation.”

Pence’s testimony followed a federal judge’s ruling compelling the former vice president to describe conversations he had with Trump in which the former president may have admitted wrongdoing, the report said.

According to CNN's report: “Pence’s meeting with investigators comes as he is exploring a possible challenge to Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, with his testimony likely to elicit a strong negative reaction from his former boss.

“As part of his political appearances and a recent book tour, Pence frequently speaks about refusing to do Trump’s bidding on January 6 and instead followed the Constitution. But he had avoided speaking under oath as part of any investigation.”

Moscow has been forced to seek reliable alternatives for settlements with foreign partners, Anton Siluanov has said

Russia never intended to ditch the US dollar in trade, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in an interview with the TV channel CGTN on Monday. Rather, Moscow was forced to look for alternatives because Western sanctions jeopardized use of the greenback in Russia’s foreign trade, according to the minister.

“We are not challenging the dollar, the dollar has challenged Russia, so we are looking for alternative settlement mechanisms between our exporters [and] importers so that it is convenient, reliable and beneficial in trade,” Siluanov stated.

The official also discussed Moscow’s plans for the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). The Shanghai-based entity was established in 2014 by the bloc’s member states – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – with the aim of facilitating payments among themselves and with their trade partners, as well as expanding links and infrastructure projects across the bloc.

Siluanov noted that Russia has already made several proposals to its trade partners with regard to dollar alternatives, and will continue to discuss the matter in the near future. He did not elaborate on what those alternatives are. However, over the past year Russia has been gradually switching from the dollar to other currencies in trade, particularly the ruble, yuan, and rupee.

He said that Russia is a rightful member of the world economy and plans to retain its place in the global market, with no intentions to “isolate itself.”

“Nothing can be done about [countries] that cut off ties with Russia. We will continue to boost our efforts, our trade and mutual investment activity with our other partners,” the minister stressed.

The US has lost the trust it used to have as the issuer of the global reserve currency by violating international rules and abandoning fiscal responsibility domestically, according to Siluanov. By extension, it has undermined trust in the dollar, he believes. He noted that the US debt crisis highlights how “key countries that used to set the tone in global finance” are now only causing problems, such as global inflation and surging interest rates.

“Why are we… developing settlements in national currencies?Because we do not know how these countries will behave next, what their inflation will be, how much their currency will be worth, how much more money they will print... There are a lot of questions for these countries – our task is to go our own way to fulfill the tasks that we have set, and to be less dependent on those countries that have proved unfriendly towards Russia.”

New York Times Gains Insider Information on Twitter Revenue, Expanded Financials Look Worse Than Former Estimates

The New York Times has gained insider information on the current advertising revenue for the social media platform Twitter. [Article Here] Ignoring the nonsense narrative engineering and just focusing on the data itself, therevenue side for Twitter is half what we previously estimated. This makes the overlay for decisions on platform content even more stark.

According to the data, ad revenue for the month of April was a lackluster $88 million. That’s a pace of just over $1 billion a year. With a pre-Musk operating expense of $4.5 billion, and pre-Musk revenue at $4 billion cited by the Twitter owner as the backdrop, here’s the outlook.

Assuming post Musk labor cost reductions saved $500 million, a decline in revenue to $1 billion/yr would be a $3.0 billion deficit, to wit you would need to add the $1.5 billion in debt service as part of the investor buyout structure.

That puts Twitter into a $4.5 billion loss ballpark per year.

This is the high end of what Musk previously estimated in public statements. Now we see why.

(New York Times) – Twitter’s U.S. advertising revenue for the five weeks from April 1 to the first week of May was $88 million, down 59 percent from a year earlier, according to an internal presentation obtained by The New York Times. (read more)

$1 billion per year in advertising revenue is a whopping 75% loss from the claimed $4 billion in revenue before the Musk purchase. Perhaps the Fidelity estimate of company value at $15 billion is closer to reality.

If the value of Twitter has dropped to the $15 billion level, that meansalmost all of the $30 billion in personal equity Musk put into the company has been lost.

Current investor debt is $12.5 billion, with $1.5 billion in debt service/yr. A valuation of $15 billion would only leave Musk with around $2.5 billion in equity position. If the valuation is accurate, Musk personally would have lost around $27.5 billion in this Twitter platform purchase.

The last time I outlined the Twitter financial position, several people took exception to the data as shared. However, the data is from Elon Musk himself, and I will again post the video at the bottom of the article.

Revenue is now Elon Musk’s #1 priority. All other platform decisions are going through the prism of financial viability…

Mary McCord, knowingly and with specific intent, defrauded the court and broke the law. Mary McCord then went on to join Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler in the construction of the articles of impeachment. She did not recuse herself.

At the time the Carter Page application was filed (October 21, 2016),Mary McCord’s chief legal counsel inside the office was a DOJ-NSD lawyer named Michael Atkinson. In his role as the legal counsel for the DOJ-NSD, it was Atkinson’s job to review and audit all FISA applications submitted from inside the DOJ. Essentially, Atkinson was the DOJ internal compliance officer in charge of making sure all FISA applications were correctly assembled and documented. McCord and Atkinson knowingly submitted a fraudulent FISA application.

Mary McCord, knowingly and with specific intent, lied to the FISA court to support the FBI targeting of Trump.Mary McCord’s husband, Sheldon L Snook, was running the office of the counselor to Chief Justice John Roberts; the office which would intercept any communication from the FISA court to the Chief Justice if the FISA court had any concerns about the false FBI application. No one from the office, or the Chief Justice counselor recused themselves.

Conflicts of interest only surfaceto create personnel changes when those changes meet the interests of the DC administrative state. When those conflicts exist but they are useful to the interests of the DC administrative state, they are ignored.

Former DeSantis Press Secretary Christina Pushaw came directly to the Florida Governor’s officeafter working in Ukraine on behalf of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. There is a clear commonality of interest in the actions of Pushaw both in Ukraine and in Florida. Once the national DeSantis operation was fully constructed and funded, in August 2022 Pushaw left the governor’s office to assemble and coordinate the previously solicited social media influencers for the 2024 operation.

After organizing the operatives, Pushaw is now spearheading a U.S. online influence campaign. In essence, aregistered foreign agent is now working on the social media platform Twitter to construct disinformation on behalf of Ron DeSantis. Elon Musk is apparently a partner in the effort, as the details of the operation begin to surface.

Their intelligence community method is to use operatives within Twitter “community notes” to control any negative opinion of DeSantis. If anything is identified that undermines the DeSantis operation, Pushawtriggers a specific account “@NoteNeeded” whichcontains embed operatives who swarm to her commands and affix labelsto Tweets designated as harmful to the interests of the DeSantis regime.

The DeSantis election influence operation is similar to what the U.S. State Dept (Nuland) and USAID (S Power) do in foreign countries; only in this example, Ms. Pushaw is working to influence domestic U.S. politics through the social media platform Twitter.

Thevarious accounts all carry the same alligator emoji as an identifying characteristic. Here’s an example of the operation at work, as well as an explanation from Twitter that just doesn’t reconcile with the claims.

Twitter claims the notes they affix to the targets identified by Ms. Pushaw are not triggered by complaints. However, what exactly is Ms. Pushaw doing in the bottom example, if not complaining? A heavy dose of pretending is needed to accept the premise of the Twitter platform. MAGA does not pretend; there is no need.

The @NoteNeeded account, has gone private – restricting access as soon as the operation was identified. This seems to be a rather odd move to make, considering the argument of the entire enterprise is based around truthfulness. If the @NoteNeeded account has nothing to hide, then why take the account private permitting visibility only from the approved members.

It is obvious the Ron DeSantis ’24 operation originated on a principle of being fraudulent in purpose to the Florida voter in 2022. What we are seeing today is a billionaire funded scheme to promote Ron DeSantis, and part of that scheme involves deploying online activists, what they call “influencers”, as conscripts for the effort. Ms. Pushaw, a registered foreign agent, is the leading organizer of this assembly. The goal is to elevate the impression of Ron DeSantis and use weaponized platform rules to attack any voice that might rise in opposition to their agenda.

Obviously, as CTH represents the key account that predicted, publicized and then deconstructed the scheme of the Sea Island billionaire class on behalf of DeSantis,our Twitter account is one of the primary targets for the Pushaw operation. I will admit to laughing at them hysterically, because quite frankly they are joyless idiots mired in a profound sense of self-importance, perpetual anger and blame-casting. The entire DeSantis tribe trigger very easily.

All of that said, in thisera where Big Government and Big Tech have merged to control information, block freedom of expression and thought, the intention of the DeSantis operation –which is based entirely on control– speaks rather loudly to what the DeSantis policy handlers would do if he were ever to reach federal office.

DeSantis has already grown the size and power of state government more than any FL governor before him. DeSantis has created all the tools for a weaponized state government as soon as Democrats take power. While ignoring the essential economic needs of the state in order to create the optical legislation for a 2024 presidential run around anti-wokeism, the people behind DeSantis will walk away from Florida having created the state authoritarian boot that will sit upon our neck. Be forewarned.

Tech giant bypasses sanctions to supply Russian market – Kommersant

LG is reportedly exporting devices with Smart TV software from its Polish plant through Belarus

South Korea’s LG Electronics has begun installing software for Smart TV adapted for the Russian marketon television sets manufactured at its plant in Poland, Kommersant business daily reported on Monday citing market sources.

The devices supplied through a parallel imports scheme are pre-installed with Russian online cinemas and support the Alisa virtual assistant, the outlet said. TVs that are not adjusted for the Russian market do not support Smart TV functions, it added.

Russian retailers procure devices from other countries via parallel imports, a practice by which a non-counterfeit product is imported without the permission of the intellectual property owner via alternative supply channels. Russia legalized the mechanism to provide the market with goods that Western companies stopped delivering or producing in Russia because of sanctions.

Televisions are imported fromLG's plant in Poland to Belaruswhere an assembly line for TVs destined for the CIS market has been created in the town of Mlava. From there, the devices are sent to Russia, a source told Kommersant.

By adapting the devices for Russia at its Polish plant, LG formally does not violate Western sanctions, but such actions could create problems for the company according to a lawyer at the EMPP Law Office, Mergen Doraev. (Interesting how all the countries are enemies they don’t stop providing services!)

"If the Polish unit further provides Russian consumers with consulting services for software support, the company may face problems – from fines to criminal charges," he said.

LG Electronics suspended all shipments of goods to Russia last year due to the disruption in global maritime logistics in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine.

The company's share of Russia's TV set market slumped from 19.1% in January 2022 to 4.2% in January this year, the outlet said.

Ukraine blew up Kakhovka dam as revenge for failed offensive – Kremlin

The act of sabotage may lead to “very serious consequences,” Dmitry Peskov has warned

Ukrainian forces sabotaged the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Russia’s Kherson Region in abid to deprive Crimea of drinking water and distract from Kiev’s faltering counteroffensive, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed on Tuesday.

The dam was partially destroyed early on Tuesday morning, sending torrents of water downstream and flooding towns and villages along the path of the Dnieper River.

“We are talking about a deliberate sabotage by the Ukrainian side,” Peskov told reporters. “This sabotage could potentially lead to very serious consequences for several tens of thousands of inhabitants of the region, environmental consequences and consequences of a different nature, which have yet to be established.”

Peskov claimed that one of the key goals of the attack was to deprive Crimea of water. Crimea’s 2 million residents largelyreceive their water from the North Crimean Canal, which is fed from the reservoir above the Kakhovka dam.

“This sabotage is also connected with the fact that, having launched large-scale offensive operations two days ago, the Ukrainian armed forces are not achieving their goals,” Peskov continued. Russia’s Defense Ministry has said it repelled several large-scale attacks in the southern sector of the front in recent days. These “offensive actions are choking,” Peskov stated.

Ukrainian officials and their European backers have accused Russia of blowing up the dam, with European Council President Charles Michel calling the attack “a war crime.”Moscow “strongly rejects” the accusation, Peskov said.

While the flooding now makes it difficult for Ukrainian forces to cross the Dnieper and attack Russia’s defensive lines, thedestruction of the dam also appears to aid a number of Ukraine’s key objectives. The flooding mostly threatens the eastern bank of the river, where Russian troops withdrew to last year amid concerns that the Ukrainian military would blow up the dam.

With the dam destroyed, thelevel of the Dnieper has fallen further upstream, including at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. Ukrainian troops made several attempts to cross the river to recapture the plant from Russian forces last year, andlowering the water level would remove a major obstacle to future attempts. Additionally, the Soviet-era plant depends on water from the Dnieper to cool its reactors and its spent fuel rods.

TheUkrainian military conducted a test strike on the damusing an American-supplied HIMARS launcherlast year, Ukrainian General Andrey Kovalchuk told the Washington Post in December.

Two months earlier, Russia’s envoy to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, warned the UN Security Council that Kiev’s forces were considering a “reckless” attack on the dam with sea mines or missiles. “The authorities in Kiev and their Western backers will bear full responsibility for all the consequences of such a devastating scenario,” Nebenzia cautioned.

More than 2,000 families suing social media companies over kids' mental health

When whistleblower Frances Haugen pulled back the curtain on Facebook in the fall of 2021, thousands of pages of internal documents showed troubling signs that the social media giant knew its platforms could be negatively impacting youth, and were doing little to effectively change it. With around 21 million American adolescents on social media, parents took note.

Now, families are suing social media. Since we first reported this story last December, the number of families pursuing lawsuits has grown to over 2,000. More than 350 lawsuits are expected to move forward this year against TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, Roblox and Meta - the parent company to Instagram and Facebook.

Tonight, you will hear from some of the families suing social media. We want to warn you that some of the content in this story is alarming, but we thought it was important to include because parents say the posts impacted their kids' mental health and, in some cases, helped lead to the death of their children.

Kathleen Spence: They're holding our children hostage and they're seeking and preying on them.

Sharyn Alfonsi: Preying on them?

Kathleen Spence: Yes.

The Spence family is suing social media giant Meta. Kathleen and Jeff Spence say Instagram led their daughter Alexis into depression and to an eating disorder at the age of 12.

Kathleen Spence: We realized that we were slowly losing her. We really had no comprehension to how severe social media had affected our daughter. She was being drawn into this hidden space and this dark world.

It began after the spences, both middle school teachers from Long Island, New York, gave 11-year-old Alexis a cell phone to keep in touch with them after school.

Kathleen Spence: We had very strict rules from the moment she had the phone. The phone was never allowed in the room at night. We would keep the phone in the hall.

Jeff Spence: We checked the phone. We put restrictions on the phone.

Alexis Spence: I would wait for my parents to fall asleep, and then I would just sit in the hallway or I would sneak my phone in my room. I wasn't allowed to use a lot of apps and they had a lot of the parental controls on.

Sharyn Alfonsi: And so how quickly did you figure out a way around the restrictions?

Alexis Spence: Pretty quickly.

Hoping to connect and keep up with friends, Alexis joined Instagram. Instagram policy mandates users are 13 years old. Alexis was 11.

Sharyn Alfonsi: I thought you had to be 13?

Alexis Spence: It asks you, "Are you 13 years or older?" I checked the box "yes" and then just kept going.

Sharyn Alfonsi: And there was never any checks?

Alexis Spence: No. No verification or anything like that.

Sharyn Alfonsi: If I had picked up your phone would I have seen the Instagram app on there?

Alexis Spence: No. There were apps that you could use to disguise it as another app. So, you could download like a calculator, 'calculator', but it's really Instagram.

Jeff Spence: There was always some work-around.

Sharyn Alfonsi: She was outwitting you.

Jeff Spence: Right, she was outwitting us.

Kathleen Spence: She was addicted to social media. We couldn't stop it. It was much bigger than us.

Now 20, Alexis says an innocent search on Instagram for fitness routines led her into a dark world.

Alexis Spence: It started as, like, fitness stuff. And then I guess that would spark the algorithm to show me diets, it then started to shift into eating disorders.

Sharyn Alfonsi: What were you seeing?

Alexis Spence: People would post photos of themselves who are very sickly or just very thin, and using them to promote eating disorders.

These are some of the images that were sent to Alexis through Instagram's algorithms – which process the user's browsing history and personal data, then push content to them they never directly asked for.

Sharyn Alfonsi: What did you learn from looking at these pro-anorexic websites?

Alexis Spence: A lot. Learning about diet pills and how to lose weight when you're 11 and going through puberty and, like, your body is supposed to be changing. It's hard.

Sharyn Alfonsi: When did that stop being something that you looked at and start being something that you were doing to yourself?

Alexis Spence: Within months.

Sharyn Alfonsi: Did it normalize it for you? Did you think, "Oh, well, other people are doing this"?

Alexis Spence: Yeah. Definitely. Like, they needed help. I needed help. And instead of getting help, I was getting advice on how to continue.

By the time she was 12, Alexis had developed an eating disorder. She had multiple Instagram accounts and says she would spend five hours a day scrolling through the app, even though it often made her feel depressed.

She drew this picture of herself in her diary crying, surrounded by her phone and laptop, with thoughts reading, 'stupid, fat...kill yourself.'

Alexis Spence: I was struggling with my mental health. I was struggling with my depression and my body image. And social media did not help with my confidence. And, if anything, it made me, like, hate myself.

It all came to a head her sophomore year when Alexis posted on Instagram that she didn't deserve to exist. A friend alerted a school counselor.

Kathleen Spence: That was the scariest day of our lives. I got a call to come to the school. And I went there and they were just showing me all of these Instagram posts of how Alexis wanted to kill herself and hurt herself. And if Instagram is really &ndash; has all the software to protect them, why was that not flagged? Why was that not identified?

This previously unpublished internal document reveals Facebook knew Instagram was pushing girls to dangerous content.

It says that in 2021, an Instagram employee ran an internal investigation on eating disorders by opening up a false account as a 13-year-old girl looking for diet tips. She was led to content and recommendations to follow 'skinny binge' and 'apple core anorexic.'

Other memos show Facebook employees raising concerns about company research that revealed Instagram made 1-in-3 teen girls feel worse about their bodies and that teens who used the app felt higher rates of anxiety and depression.

Sharyn Alfonsi: What was it like when you saw those Facebook papers for the first time?

Kathleen Spence: Sickening. The fact that I was sitting there, struggling and hoping to save my daughter's life. And they had all these documents behind closed doors that they could've protected her. And they chose to ignore that research.

Attorney Matt Bergman represents the Spence family. He started the Social Media Victims Law Center after reading the Facebook papers and is now working with more than 1,800 families who are pursuing lawsuits against social media companies like Meta.

Matt Bergman: Time and time again, when they have an opportunity to choose between safety of our kids and profits, they always choose profits.

This summer, Bergman and his team plan on starting the discovery process for the federal case against Meta and other social media companies, a multi-million dollar suit that he says is more about changing policy than financial compensation.

Bergman spent 25 years as a product liability attorney specializing in absestos and mesothelioma cases. He argues the design of social media platforms is ultimately hurting kids.

Matt Bergman: They have intentionally designed a product that is addictive. They understand that if children stay online, they make more money. It doesn't matter how harmful the material is.

Sharyn Alfonsi: So the fact that these kids ended up seeing the things that they saw, that were so disturbing, wasn't by accident; it was by design?

Matt Bergman: Absolutely. This is not a coincidence.

Sharyn Alfonsi: Isn't it the parents' job to monitor this stuff?

Matt Bergman: Well, of course it is. I'm all for parental responsibility. But these products are explicitly designed to evade parental authority.

Sharyn Alfonsi: So what needs to be done?

Matt Bergman: Number one is age and identity verification. You know, that technology exists. You know, if people are trying to hook up on Tinder there's technology to make sure that the people are who they say they are. Number two would be turn off the algorithms. You know, there's no reason why Alexis Spence, who was interested in exercise, should have been directed toward anorexic content. Number three would be warnings so that parents know what's going on. Let's be realistic, you're never gonna have social media platforms be 100% safe. But, you know, these changes would make them safer.

Right now, the Roberts family says social media is not safe for kids. Englyn Roberts was the baby in a large family, the center of her parents Toney and Brandy's world.

But Englyn's life online told a different story. As the pandemic played out, Englyn wrote about struggles with self-worth, relationships and mental health.

One August night in 2020, just a few hours after Toney and Brandy kissed their 14-year-old smiling daughter goodnight, Brandy received a text from a parent of one of Englyn's friends who was worried about Englyn and suggested they check on her.

Toney Roberts: We went upstairs, and we checked, and her door was locked. That was kinda odd, so I took the key from the top and we opened the door and no Englyn. And when I turned around that's when I found her. When you find your child hanging, and you are in that moment in disbelief. It's just no way. Not our baby. Not our child. And then ultimately, I fault myself.

Sharyn Alfonsi: Why do you fault yourself?

Toney Roberts: Because I'm dad. I'm supposed to know.

Sharyn Alfonsi: Prior to that night you had no idea that she was depressed?

Toney Roberts: Not. Not even close.

Like the Spence family, Toney Roberts started connecting the dots after the Facebook papers came out and began digging through his daughter's phone for answers. He found an Instagram post sent to Englyn from a friend.

Toney Roberts: There was a video. And that video was a lady on Instagram pretending to hang herself, and that's ultimately what our child did. Cause, you ask yourself, how did she come up with this idea? And then when I did the research, there it was. She saw it on Instagram. It was on her phone.

Brandy Roberts: If that video wasn't sent to her, because she copied it, she wouldn't have had a way of knowing how to do that certain way of hanging yourself.

Nearly a year and a half after Englyn's death, that hanging video was still circulating on Instagram, with at least 1,500 views. Toney Roberts says it was taken down in December 2021. The Roberts are suing Meta, the parent company to Instagram.

Toney Roberts: If they so call monitor and do things, how could it stay on that site? Because part of their policies says they don't allow for self-harm photos, videos, things of that nature. So, who's holding them accountable?

Report: CIA Was Warned of Ukraine Plan to Sabotage Nord Stream Pipeline

The Biden administration was forewarned through the CIA that the Ukraine military planned a covert attack on the undersea Nord Stream pipeline a full three months before the sabotage took place, a report Tuesday claims.

According to the Washington Post an elite six-man team of divers who reported directly to the commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces was responsible. They used a chartered yacht gained through fake passports and left a port in Germany before planting explosives that severed the pipelines.

The report, complied by Shane Harris and Souad Mekhennet, claims the intelligence information was widely shared within the White House and beyond. It states:

Details about the plan, which have not been previously reported, were collected by a European intelligence service and shared with the CIA in June 2022. They provide some of the most specific evidence to date linking the government of Ukraine to the eventual attack in the Baltic Sea, which U.S. and Western officials have called a brazen and dangerous act of sabotage on Europe’s energy infrastructure.

The European intelligence reporting was shared on the chat platform Discord, allegedly by Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira. The Washington Post obtained a copy from one of Teixeira’s online friends.

The Post story goes further to pinpoint more sources for the leak that set out how the Russia-to-Germany natural gas project was sabotaged by Ukraine.

It builds on claims made back in February that no evidence exists that Moscow was involved in the demise of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, as Breitbart London reported.

A three-judge federal appeals court in Georgia has rejected an administration request for permission to keep releasing illegal migrants into Americans’ society via the parole pathway.

The rejection is a win for Florida’s Attorney General — Ashley Moody — because it narrows the parole gateway that President Joe Biden’s pro-migration border chief is using to let poor economic migrants compete against Americans for jobs, housing, and school attention.

But the win will likely be appealed by the administration to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit declared:

The Department of Homeland Security1 (“DHS”) has filed a motion to stay two orders pending its appeal in this case: (1) the March 8, 2023, order that vacated DHS’s Policy on the Use of Parole Plus Alternatives to Detention to Decompress Border Locations (the “Parole+ATD policy”); and (2) the May 16, 2023, order enjoining DHS’s Parole with Conditions in Limited Circumstances Prior to the Issuance of a Charging Document memorandum (the “PWC policy”).

DHS therefore has failed to establish one of the two “most critical” factors …. we do not find a stay pending appeal to be warranted as to either of the district court’s orders.

The decision is good, said Andrew Arthur, a former immigration judge who now works with the Center for Immigration Studies. “They released 130,000 illegal migrants [via parole] in just the month of December … but [only] one last month” after Florida won its lower-court case in March, he told Breitbart News.

But the rejection is also a step closer to blocking the bigger asylum loophole — and other loopholes — that Mayorkas is creating as he tries to resettle millions of migrants into U.S. cities and towns, said Arthur.

Florida has also expanded its lawsuit by asking the judge to block other releases via parole — which likely would block the release of migrants who are trying to use the asylum loophole.

“The Florida Attorney General … is playing a game of Whac-a-Mole” with Mayorkas and his loophole-creating lawyers, Arthur said.

For example, Mayorkas and his deputies are already allowing job-seeking white-collar illegals to fly into the United States on B-1/B-2 visitor visas, they are preparing to resettle very many migrants via the president’s uncapped refugee program, and they are planning to welcome 100,000 left-behind children and wives of illegal migrants from Central America...

In recent decades, there has been an unexplained and alarming growth in the prevalence of chronic illnesses and health problems, especially in children. We’ve seen a stunning rise in autism, auto-immune disorders, obesity, infertility, serious allergies, and respiratory challenges.

It is time to ask: What is going on?

Is it the food that they eat? The environment that we live in? The over-prescription of certain medications? Is it the toxins and chemicals that are present in our homes?

Every year, we spend hundreds of billions of dollars to treat these chronic problems rather than looking at what is causing them in the first place. Too often, our public health establishment is too close to Big Pharma—they make a lot of money, Big Pharma—big corporations, and other special interests, and does not want to ask the tough questions about what is happening to our children’s health. If Big Pharma defrauds American patients and taxpayers or puts profits above people, they must be investigated and held accountable.

When I am back in the White House, I will establish a special Presidential Commission of independent minds who are not bought and paid for by Big Pharma, and I will charge them with investigating what is causing the decades-long increase in chronic illnesses. I understand Big Pharma, I believe better than anyone else. I know where they’re coming from. And then, I will ask them to publish recommendations for how every American child can have a safe and healthy childhood.

This is a conversation that is long overdue—and it’s a conversation that American families deserve. American families must have this conversation, and they must have a leader—a president—who can do something about this problem. And I will do that.

The U.S. Air Force is issuing $50,000 bonuses to experienced pilots who opt to renew their contracts in the midst of a severe shortage of personnel to fill its highest-skill officer positions.

The program applies to certain pilots whose active duty commitment expires in 2023, bumping up the usual bonus they would receive for extending their Air Force careers from $35,000 to $50,000, according to an Air Force press release. Applications opened on Tuesday for the boosted Legacy Aviation Bonus Program to help the Air Force retain so-called “rated” officers as the force has struggled with a severe pilot shortage in recent years, according to Military.com.

“Reliable personnel forecasts allow the Air Force to continue executing the warfighting mission,” Maj. Gen. Albert Miller, Air Force Training and Readiness director, said in the statement. “Our experienced aviators are uniquely qualified to succeed in a combat environment and these incentives are necessary to maintain that talent and competitiveness with our pacing challenge,” referring to China.

Remote piloted aircraft pilots, air battle managers and combat systems officers are eligible to apply through Sept. 15, according to the press release. However, pilots who have received a bonus through a previous contract agreement will not be able to negotiate and the extra bonus will not be offered next year.

Fiscal year 2023, which ends Sept. 31, “will be a transition year

In the last decade, the Air Force has fallen somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 pilots short of requirements each year, Military.com reported. Recruiting numbers worsenedacross the military in 2022 amid what officials called the most difficult recruiting environment in decades.

“We do have a [pilot] shortage,” Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall said at a budget briefing in March, according to Military.com, adding that the Air Force is trying out several routes including bonuses to mitigate the problem. “We’re having to try to improve the efficiency of the pipeline to get more people in. The reserve and Guard equation is a little more complicated, but we do have some shortages there that we’re trying to address as well.”

Kendall separately said the service expects a 10% recruiting shortfall for active-duty airmen in 2023 at an Air and Space Force Association summit in March. The Guard and Reserve forces could see up to a 30% new recruit shortage, Air Force Recruiting Service Commander Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas told the outlet in May.

Other armed services are doubling down efforts to meet recruiting goals as it becomesincreasingly less certain the post-COVID challenges hampering their ability to attract new troops have abated.

The Army plans to expand its pre-boot camp training program, the original Future Soldier Preparatory Course (FSPC), in June and add a separate pilot program for new recruits whose ASVAB scores are even lower than the minimum to qualify for the FSPC, which was introduced in August, according to Military.com.

An earthquake shook parts of western Haiti on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring more than two dozen others, civil protection authorities said.

The magnitude 4.9 quake occurred in the isolated Grand’Anse department nearly 300 kilometers (185 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.

The New York Times has been forced to very, very belatedly deal with something which had long been obvious and known to many independent analysts and media outlets, but which has been carefully shielded from the mainstream masses in the West for obvious reasons.

The surprising Monday Times headline said that "Nazi Symbols on Ukraine’s Front Lines Highlight Thorny Issues of History." This acknowledgement comes after literally years of primarily indy journalists and geopolitical commentators pointing out that yes indeed... Ukraine's military and paramilitary groups, especially those operating in the east since at least 2014, have a serious Nazi ideology problem. This has been exhaustively documented, again, going back years. But the report, which merely tries to downplay it as a "thorny issue" of Ukraine's "unique" "History" - suggests that the real problem for Western PR is fundamentally that it's being displayed so openly. Ukrainian troops are being asked to cover those Nazi symbols please!&ndash;as Matt Taibbi sarcastically quipped in commenting on the report.

The authors of the NYT report begin by expressing frustration over the optics of Nazi symbols being displayed so proudly on many Ukrainian soldiers' uniforms. Suggesting that many journalistic photographs which have in some cases been featured in newspapers and media outlets worldwide (typically coupled with generally positive articles on Ukraine's military) are merely 'unfortunate' or misleading, the NYT report says, "In each photograph, Ukrainians in uniform wore patches featuring symbols that were made notorious by Nazi Germany and have since become part of the iconography of far-right hate groups."

The report admits this has led to controversy wherein news rooms actually must delete some photos of Ukrainian soldiers and militants. "The photographs, and their deletions, highlight the Ukrainian military’s complicated relationship with Nazi imagery, a relationship forged under both Soviet and German occupation during World War II," continues the report.

So it's merely "thorny" and "complicated" we are told. Below is a small sampling of the kinds of patches that appear on Ukrainian military uniforms with "some regularity" - in the words of The New York Times:

The New Hampshire globalist is the latest Never Trumper to rear his head once again ahead of 2024.

Globalist New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu announced that he would not run for president because he wants all never-Trump Republicans to rally behind a candidate to stop Trump from winning the GOP Primary. Sununu recently said some very nice things about Ron DeSantis during the Florida Governor’s Trip to New Hampshire, signaling that DeSantis is the candidate that Sununu is talking about.

In the WAPO, Sununu attacked Republicans aiming to be Trump’s VP, writing, “Too many other candidates who have entered this race are simply running to be Trump’s vice president. That’s not leadership; that’s weakness. Too many candidates are afraid to confront Trump, surrendering to his attacks. I will have more credibility speaking out against Trump as a non-candidate to help move the conversation toward the future I believe the Republican Party should embrace.”

Sununu wrote that Never Trump Republicans must rally around a candidate to beat Trump “No one can stop candidates from entering this race, but candidates with no path to victory must have the discipline to get out. Anyone polling in the low single digits by this winter needs to have the courage to hang it up and head home.”

Sununu recently praised Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during his visit to New Hampshire, saying, “I actually thought it was a pretty darn good speech. It’s not just about the woke stuff. He talked about fiscal discipline. He’s talking about doing things in Washington that folks haven’t gotten done, and whether that’s Ron or all the candidates, that’s what we have to be talking about.”

In 2016 Ted Cruz and John Kasich combined forces in an attempt to stop Trump from winning the nomination. GOP Primary polls show that Trump is still crushing Ron DeSantis in a head-to-head match-up, meaning that Sununu’s plan looks to fail just like Kasich’s did in 2016.

Nike Marks Pride Month With Doc Who Does Kids’ Gender Surgeries, Leaked Email Shows

Nike will celebrate Pride Month by hosting a panel discussion with a surgeon who said he performed “gender affirming mastectomies” on minors, a leaked email obtained by The Daily Wire reveals.

The email begins by stating, “This year’s theme is Together We Are Undeniable. The LGBTQIA+ community continues to fight for equality – their fight to be themselves.”

It goes on to explain that the theme “centers around determination; celebrating icons of the community and the progress we have and will continue to make in light of recent attacks and restrictions on the community and their allies.”

The Portland-based corporation will host a panel discussion with Dr. Blair Peters, a surgeon at the Oregon Health and Science University, who has admitted to performing “gender affirming mastectomies” on minors.

“Join the Human Rights Campaign, Portland Community Football Club’s Kaig Lightner, and OHSU Trans Health Program’s Dr. Blair Peters for a panel and Q&A to discuss policies impacting the transgender community,” the leaked email says, advertising the July 11 event.

In a now-deleted tweet from last year, Peters said he had “performed gender affirming mastectomies (top surgeries) for 3 young adults and adolescents” in one day.

CCP Had ‘God Credentials’ To Access User Data Collected By TikTok Parent Company, Ex-Exec Says

A former high-ranking employee of ByteDance, the parent company of video platform TikTok, alleged that agroup of members within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had special credentials to access U.S. user data, according to a legal filing, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Former executive Yu Yintao alleged that CCP committee members targeted Hong Kong civil rights activists and protesters in 2018, obtaining TikTok data containing network information,SIM card identification and IP addresses to track and identify them, according to the filing, the WSJ reported. Moreover, CCP members inside ByteDance had access to a “superuser” credential or “god credential” tosee every piece of information the company received, and had a “backdoor channel” to obtain U.S. user information.

These allegations arose as part of a recent submission in a wrongful termination lawsuit Yu filed in May in San Francisco Superior Court, according to the WSJ. Yu, a California resident, was head of engineering for ByteDance from August 2017 to November 2018 and was based at ByteDance’s Menlo Park, California, office and worked at the company’s Los Angeles and Beijing offices, according to the WSJ

“I have seen no evidence that the Chinese government has access to that data,” =•TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said in his March testimony==. “They have never asked us. We have not provided.”

Yu’s lawyer Charles Jung, a partner at law firm Nassiri & Jung, told the WSJ that Yu was inspired to reveal the allegations because he viewed Chew’s testimony as deceptive.

“My client is placing himself at risk by telling his story in court,” Jung said. “But the truth is powerful, and telling the truth is what’s needed to bring social change.”

“We plan to vigorously oppose what we believe are baseless claims and allegations in this complaint,” a ByteDance spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Mr. Yu worked for ByteDance Inc. for less than a year and his employment ended in July 2018. During his brief time at the company, he worked on an app called Flipagram, which was discontinued years ago for business reasons.”

“It’s curious that Mr. Yu has never raised these allegations in the five years since his employment for Flipagram was terminated in July 2018,” the spokesperson added. “His actions are clearly intended to garner media attention.”

A Biden invitation means the ties are good; no invitation means they are bad.

Many people reduce the state of US-Israel ties to when US President Joe Biden will invite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House.

A Biden invitation means the ties are good; no invitation means they are bad. The longer Biden delays, according to this way of thinking, the more this indicates that the relationship between Jerusalem and Washington is in the doldrums.

Forget that senators and members of Congress from both sides of the aisles come here regularly, as do governors. Forget that the head of Centcom General Michael “Erik” Kurilla is a frequent visitor. Forget that Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi were in Washington this week for talks.

None of that matters. None of that attests to a robust relationship. According to those interested in highlighting differences between the US and Israel, the only true gauge is whether Biden wants to see Netanyahu in the Oval Office.

If the president does not want Netanyahu as a guest—as Biden unceremoniously said on March 28, at least not in the “near term”—then Netanyahu’s political opponents and the heads of the anti-judicial overhaul movement use that as proof that Netanyahu and the overhaul are seriously damaging Israel’s relationship with its greatest ally.

But then along comes US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who throws a wrench in this love-on-the-rocks narrative. On Sunday, Blinken delivered a warm pro-Israel address to an American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) gathering in Washington.

The US-Israel partnership “touches on every aspect of our lives, from security to business, from energy to public health,” Blinken said. “And the depth and breadth of that partnership between our governments are matched only by the strength of the ties between our peoples. This partnership between the United States and Israel is indispensable.”

Or consider this: “The US-Israel relationship is underwritten by the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security. That commitment is non-negotiable; it is ironclad.”

Or this: “This year, we have more joint [military] exercises scheduled than at any point in our history.”

Or this: “America is more secure when Israel is strong.”

Those words give testimony to the strength and breadth of the relationship and run contrary to the feeling that the lack of a Netanyahu-Biden powwow in Washington is the be-all and end-all sign of a strong relationship. (The UN General Assembly meeting begins on September 20. Don’t be surprised if Netanyahu and Biden meet then as part of Netanyahu’s likely trip to New York to address the UN.)

Is a Biden invitation to Netanyahu important? Undeniably, becuase chemistry and the personal relationship between leaders have a huge impact on the tenor of ties. It is also essential in that it sends a message to Israel’s friends and enemies alike about the intimacy of the relationship.

But is such a meeting all-important? No, the relationship between the two countries is wide enough and deep enough to withstand a year without a prime ministerial visit to Washington.

The bulk of Blinken’s 3,000-word speech to AIPAC was positive. One paragraph dealt with Blinken reiterating Washington’s more than five-decade-old policy of opposing settlement growth. Predictably, however, that paragraph was highlighted in many reports about the speech.

Why? Because that paragraph underlined where the countries disagree, and in the US-Israel relationship, the news is where there is disagreement, not agreement

Target market cap down over $13 billion amid Pride backlash

More than 200 LGBTQ groups angered by Target's decision to pull Pride merchandise from shelves are demanding the company "denounce extremists" and restock all the Pride merchandise in stores and online.

The Human Rights Campaign, along with GLAAD, GLSEN and other groups, released a statement asking Target and other businesses like Anheuser-Busch to "reject and speak out against anti-LGBTQ+ extremism going into Pride Month." More than 200 other progressive and LGBTQ organizations signed on to the statement, which argued that showing support for their community was good for business.

The organizations laid out a three-part demand that calls on Target to restock all the Pride merchandise both in stores and online, ensure the safety of Target employees and release a statement "reaffirming their commitment to the LGBTQ+ community" within 24 hours.

"When it comes to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion, there is no such thing as neutrality," the LGTBQ coalition said.

The coalition suggested they would continue to support Target and other businesses who rejected criticism from consumers.

"Target, and all businesses, can leverage the support of LGBTQ+ organizations to navigate this hate, so that together, we can let extremists know unequivocally that, just as with every other failed anti-LGBTQ+ campaign of the past, fear will not win," the statement reads.

Target displays LGBTQ-themed apparel annually leading into June. However, the retail giant came under increased scrutiny after consumers noticed stores selling "tuck-friendly" women's bathing suits for transgender people and Pride apparel for children and infants.

The company responded to widespread backlash over the Pride merchandise by moving some Pride products to less prominent sections of the store and removing other merchandise altogether. Target said it moved the products to ensure employees' safety.

By satisfying an extremist religious constituency, Ramzy Baroud says the prime minister is turning Israel into a country with leaders determined to institute a religious war.

After signing a military decree on May 18, allowing illegal Israeli Jewish settlers to reclaim the abandoned Homesh settlement located in the northern Occupied West Bank, the Israeli government has informed the Biden administration it will not turn the area into a new settlement.

The latter revelation was reported by Axios on May 23. This contradiction is hardly surprising. While Israel’s far-right ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, know precisely what they want, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to perform an impossible political act: he wants to fulfill all the wishes of Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, but without veering off the U.S. political agenda in the Middle East, and without creating the circumstances that could eventually topple the Palestinian Authority.

Moreover, Netanyahu wants to normalize with Arab governments while continuing to colonize Palestine, expand settlements and have complete control over Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Palestinian Muslim and Christian holy shrines.

Worse still, he wants, per the insistence of Ben-Gvir and his extremist religious constituency, to repopulate Homesh and create new outposts while avoiding an all-out armed rebellion in the West Bank.

Concurrently, Netanyahu wants good relations with the Arabs and Muslims while constantly humiliating, oppressing and killing Arabs and Muslims.

Indeed, such a feat is virtually impossible.

Netanyahu is not a novice politician who is failing at appeasing all his target audiences simultaneously. He is a right-wing ideologue who uses the Zionist ideology and religion as the foundation of his political agenda. Anywhere else, especially in the Western world, Netanyahu would have been perceived to be a far-right politician.

Diplomatic Engagement

One of the reasons that the West is yet to brand Netanyahu as such is that if there is a general agreement that Netanyahu is an affront to democracy, it would be difficult to engage with him diplomatically.

While the likes of Italy’s far-right government of Giorgia Meloni hosted Netanyahu last March, U.S. President Joe Biden is yet to meet the Israeli leader in person, months after the latter composed his latest government of far-right religionists.

Netanyahu is aware of all these challenges and that his country’s reputation, even among allies, is in tatters. The Israeli leader, however, is determined to persevere for his own sake.

It took five elections in four years for Netanyahu to assemble a relatively stable government. New elections carry risks, as the opposition leader, Yair Lapid, is slated to win a majority of seats if a sixth election is held.

But satisfying Ben-Gvir and others is turning Israel into a country governed by populist, nationalist leaders determined to institute a religious war. Judging by the evidence on the ground, they might get what they want.

The impoverished Central Asian country with ties to Russia and China has seen three presidents resign over political crises fuelled by corruption, nepotism and disputed votes since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The GKNB state security agency said it dismantled the preparations of a group of people planning to organize riots “in order to seize power by force,” adding that more than 30 people were arrested on Monday.

The arrests come just days after a visit to Kyrgyzstan by European Council President Charles Michel, during which President Sadyr Japarov pledged his “readiness to work hand in hand with the European Union.”
