A groundbreaking study conducted by the renowned Cleveland Clinic, ranked as the second-best hospital in the world, has found that a higher number of COVID-19 vaccine doses received increases the risk of infection with COVID-19.

The research, conducted with a large sample size within the healthcare system, capitalized on the early recognition of the need to maintain an effective workforce during the pandemic.

Participants in the trial were all Cleveland Clinic Health System employees working at any Cleveland Clinic facility in Ohio on September 12, 2022, the first day the bivalent vaccine was made accessible to staff.

The study, which has undergone peer review and has been published, stated, “The risk of COVID-19 also varied by the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses previously received. The higher the number of vaccines previously received, the higher the risk of contracting COVID-19.” (See figure below)

Furthermore, the study found that the bivalent vaccines demonstrated an overall effectiveness of about 29% in protecting against infection with SARS-CoV-2 when the Omicron BA.4/5 lineages were the predominant circulating strains. Only 29%. However, this effectiveness decreased when the circulating strains were no longer represented in the vaccine. In the case of the XBB lineages, the study could not establish a significant protective effect.

Special Counsel John Durham released his final report concluding the FBI had no verified intel when it opened the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump in 2016.

In July of 2016, Peter Strzok opened a counterintel investigation into Trump’s camp dubbed “Crossfire Hurricane” on suspicions (based on no evidence) that the Russians had infiltrated Trump’s circle.

The CI investigation was based on lies conjured up by Hillary Clinton and her paid-for fake Russia dossier.

According to John Durham’s report, Hillary Clinton’s plan to link Trump’s campaign to Russia was briefed by former CIA Director John Brennan to Barack Obama and Joe Biden in August 2016!

Durham blasted Hillary Clinton for her “plan to stir up a scandal against US Presidential candidate Donald Trump by tying him to Putin and the Russians’ hacking of the Democratic National Committee.”

Hillary Clinton personally approved of the dissemination of the bogus Trump-Russia Alfa Bank accusations to the media – knowing it was all a lie.

The Gateway Pundit reported back in 2019 that it was a Hillary supporter working with Fusion GPS who created the fake Trump-Russian Alfa Bank accusations.

Despite their central position to the Trump-Russia hoax scandal launched by the Hillary Campaign, Fusion GPS refused to hand over 1,500 documents to the Durham Special Counsel investigation.

And Durham did not take legal action to obtain the documents.

These documents were sought during Durham’s investigation into the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe. Fusion GPS cited attorney-client privilege in their refusal to hand over the documents, a claim that has been contested by many legal experts​.

According to the initial report, Durham did not take legal action to acquire the documents.

The Secretary of State called for Washington to continue to put militarism before diplomacy

The US will focus its efforts on arming Ukraine and not attempting to bring the war to a negotiated settlement, America’s top diplomat said. Secretary of State Antony Blinken laid out a plan to massively expand Kiev’s military before talks begin.

In a speech delivered in Finland on Friday, Blinken stated, "The United States – together with our allies and partners – is firmly committed to supporting Ukraine’s defense today, tomorrow, for as long as it takes." He continued, "We believe the prerequisite for meaningful diplomacy and real peace is a stronger Ukraine, capable of deterring and defending against any future aggression."

Blinken dismissed the idea of even a temporary pause in the fighting. "Some countries will call for a ceasefire. And on the surface, that sounds sensible – attractive, even. After all, who doesn’t want warring parties to lay down their arms? Who doesn’t want the killing to stop?" He said. "But a ceasefire that simply freezes current lines in place and enables Putin to consolidate control over the territory he’s seized…It would legitimize Russia’s land grab. It would reward the aggressor and punish the victim."

The Secretary of State offered an ambitious vision of Kiev’s future military capabilities. "America and our allies are helping meet Ukraine’s needs on the current battlefield while developing a force that can deter and defend against aggression for years to come." He added, "That means helping build a Ukrainian military of the future, with long-term funding, a strong air force centered on modern combat aircraft, an integrated air and missile defense network, advanced tanks and armored vehicles, national capacity to produce ammunition, and the training and support to keep forces and equipment combat-ready."

It is unclear how long it would take to build the deterrence force envisioned by Blinken. American arms stockpiles are dwindling as Washington attempts to transfer Kiev enough military equipment to keep its army fighting. The US additionally has plans to significantly increase arms transfers to Taiwan.

Blinken claimed, "Our support for Ukraine hasn’t weakened our capabilities to meet potential threats from China or anywhere else – it’s strengthened them." In November, the Wall Street Journal reported, "US government and congressional officials fear the conflict in Ukraine is exacerbating a nearly $19 billion backlog of weapons bound for Taiwan, further delaying efforts to arm the island."

At California’s Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the theme park is hosting a “Pride After Hours,” and urged visitors to “Join us for a show unlike any other! Drag Queens across the Bay Area such as Drag Queen Margo will be hosting shows throughout the night!”

Six Flags America, in Maryland, will be hosting its Pride event from June 20 – 25.

Six Flags New England will be holding their Pride events, complete with drag queens, on June 3-4, 10-11, 17-18.

“Being called the ‘PRIDEmosphere,’ the park will be completely transforming from its usual look,” the park announced, according to Explore Western Mass. “Instead, park-goers will be immersed in rainbow decor, balloons, rainbow street performers, interactive rainbow photo opportunities and more. Drummers, stilt walkers and balloon artist in rainbow attire will be present throughout the month of June, filling the park with their best Pride fashion. Musical performances that includes drag shows will also be taking place.”

The report added, “To top off Six Flags New England’s Pride transformation, the park will have seven 20-foot rainbows throughout the park’s Main Street.”

Other Six Flags locations throughout the country are also hosting various LGBTQ events throughout Pride Month.

Far-left Mayor of London Sadiq Khan declared that London needs “more migrants” and that the government should give cities the power to set their own immigration policies.

“I have no hesitation at all saying that we need more migrants in London, ” Kahn told Channel 4, going on to claim that there were social and cultural benefits to the city through mass migration.

Khan went on to claim that there are shortages of labour and skill within the British capital, particularly in areas such as the healthcare system, social care, tech, and hospitality.

Interestingly, while the Conservative government has overseen record waves of migration following Brexit, the hospitality sector has been one of the few sectors to have its labour supply actually restricted, which has resulted in native hospitality workers seeing their wages grow at a significantly faster pace than the national average.

In his interview with Channel 4, the far-left mayor went on to suggest that the government give local authorities, such as himself, the power to determine their own immigration policies.

“Devolve to cities like London, the powers to have a regional shortage occupation list, so I can be in charge of deciding how many people come to London to help our economy,” Khan said.

Khan said that there the “pipeline” of training Londoners for jobs would be insufficient in covering the needed supply of workers, which he claimed could only be filled by foreign labour, despite it presumably being easier to recruit workers from different parts of the UK rather than from abroad.

The importation of foreign workers is often preferable to the business class, however, given that they are often willing to work for less than the native population. People from migrant backgrounds are far more likely to vote for the left-wing Labour Party, which might be a consideration for Khan, who is facing a tough re-election battle coming up next year.

Abstract

Background

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a bivalent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine protects against COVID-19.

Methods

The study included employees of Cleveland Clinic in employment when the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine first became available. Cumulative incidence of COVID-19 over the following 26 weeks was examined. Protection provided by vaccination (analyzed as a time-dependent covariate) was evaluated using Cox proportional hazards regression, with change in dominant circulating lineages over time accounted for by time-dependent coefficients. The analysis was adjusted for the pandemic phase when the last prior COVID-19 episode occurred and the number of prior vaccine doses.

Results

Among 51 017 employees, COVID-19 occurred in 4424 (8.7%) during the study. In multivariable analysis, the bivalent-vaccinated state was associated with lower risk of COVID-19 during the BA.4/5-dominant (hazard ratio, 0.71 [95% confidence interval, .63–79]) and the BQ-dominant (0.80 [.69–.94]) phases, but decreased risk was not found during the XBB-dominant phase (0.96 [.82–.1.12]). The estimated vaccine effectiveness was 29% (95% confidence interval, 21%–37%), 20% (6%–31%), and 4% (−12% to 18%), during the BA.4/5-, BQ-, and XBB-dominant phases, respectively.The risk of COVID-19 also increased with time since the most recent prior COVID-19 episode and with the number of vaccine doses previously received.

Conclusions

The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine given to working-aged adults afforded modest protection overall against COVID-19 while the BA.4/5 lineages were the dominant circulating strains, afforded less protection when the BQ lineages were dominant, and effectiveness was not demonstrated when the XBB lineages were dominant.

The beloved kids' show has been promoting Pride month for several years now

PBS kids’ staple Sesame Street recently published multiple Pride Month posts to Twitter, using several of its kid-favorite puppet characters to "celebrate diversity."

The posts generated a wave a response from users who were supportive of the post, along with users angry that a show appealing to kids as young as toddlers would be touting the LGBTQ agenda.

The latest Pride Month post from the decades-old kids TV show featured a colorful image of several of its beloved characters interlocking arms in a display of solidarity for the LGBTQ community. Though users couldn’t see their faces, they could make out several of them based on the colors of their clothing and fur (and feathers).

The drawing in the post clearly depicted Elmo, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, and Oscar the Grouch, among other of the show’s colorful characters.

The caption for Sesame Street’s post stated, "This #PrideMonth, let's celebrate diversity and unity and spread love and acceptance. Together, we can make the world a kinder place for all." It also featured an array of hearts matching the colors of the rainbow, Pride’s official logo.

An Egyptian policeman killed three Israeli soldiers near the Egypt-Israel border and was shot dead, the Israeli military said on Saturday.

Early Saturday morning, two Israel Defense Forces soldiers were shot and killed near a guard post on the border. One of them was identified as Sgt. Lia Ben Nun, 19, a medic from the town of Rishon Leztion; the other as Ori Yitzhak Illouz.

On Saturday afternoon, forces identified the gunman, who had crossed into Israel, and engaged him in a firefight, killing him, according to the military. During the exchange of fire, a third Israeli soldier was killed, the IDF said, whom it named as Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, from Ofakim.

A preliminary probe by the military suggested that the Egyptian officer entered Israel by using an emergency passage in the fence at the border, a few hundred meters away from the guard post. It was not clear whether the soldiers were aware of the existence of this passage. The military said it still doesn't know exactly when the policeman entered Israel, and how exactly.

The soldiers who were killed at their post were required to serve in 12-hour shifts, which are exceptionally long for the IDF, especially in hot weather.

The probe showed that at 2:30 A.M., there was a drug smuggling attempt about three kilometers north of the guard post. At 3 A.M., this was intercepted by troops guarding the border. According to the IDF, at 4:15 A.M., Ben Nun and Illouz were last time they answered a check-in communication.

Sometime around 6 or 7 A.M., shots were heard in the area of the border. Ben Nun and Illouz were found dead at 9 A.M., located a few meters away from each other. The probe found that neither had shot at the assailant. It wasn't immediately clear why there was no attempt to contact the two soldiers between 4:15 and 9.

After their bodies were found, according to the military probe, a drone was launched and located a suspicious individual around a kilometer and a half away from the border. Troops were rushed to the scene, and a gunfight ensued in which Dahan and the policeman were killed and another soldiers was lightly wounded.

An Egyptian military statement said three Israeli security personnel and one Egyptian security personnel were killed in the exchange that took place Saturday morning. According to the Egyptian military spokesperson, the police officer crossed the border while chasing after drug smugglers, leading to an exchange of fire with Israeli forces. Egyptian security sources said that Egyptian and Israeli officials are coordinating an investigation into the event.

In the statement, the Egyptian military sent its condolences to the families of the soldiers, and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.

A political official told Haaretz that Jerusalem "is not expecting a crisis with the Egyptians because of the incident," and that communication is being held on the matter at the military level.

The IDF Spokesperson, Gen. Daniel Hagari, said that this is "a complicated and difficult event that is still under investigation," and added that Israel is examining it alongside Egypt. The IDF and Border Police are increasing their presence in the area.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement calling the incident serious and that it "will be fully investigated." He commended the IDF for "eliminating the terrorist," adding that "our hearts are with the families in their deep sorrow."

In December, IDF forces fired on suspects during a drug smuggling attempt on the Israeli side of the Egyptian border, killing one of the suspected smugglers.

Only full NATO membership can truly protect Ukraine, President Vladimir Zelensky said on Friday as his country continues to seek security guarantees from the West.

“We are not looking for a substitute for NATO, and it is very important that our partners hear us,” Zelensky told reporters after his meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis in Kiev. “That is why we are having so many meetings at the highest level. We are not looking for an alternative.” (Zelensky needs to recognize they are not partners, your country is a sacrifice. They have been doing the political bullshit game a lot longer than he has. Did he really think they like or respect him? If so, too bad, you offered to sacrifice your people to the last man.)

Zelensky argued that the existing commitments of NATO members to defend each other would be “the best security guarantees for Ukraine.” (Of course it would, but your country is the most corrupt in front of Russia, and you have an active war. Ukraine had 17 years to clean up your act to join the EU, NATO won’t take you dude.)

Russia views NATO’s continued eastward expansion as a threat to its security and has cited member states' aid to Ukraine as one of the reasons it launched the military operation in the neighboring state in February 2022. Moscow recently said that Ukraine’s neutrality would be one of key conditions for a lasting peace.

A supervising detective involved in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s Donald Trump prosecution has been suspended for his contact with the former president’s ex-lawyer and bitter adversary Michael Cohen, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Jeremy Rosenberg, who investigates financial crimes for Bragg, had his gun removed recently for his interactions with Cohen, the sources claimed.

Reportedly, the transgender people who are trying to leave the state of Florida are doing so because of a slew of “anti-LGBTQ+” laws that have been passed in recent years. Trans Activists, Anti-Child Castration Groups Draw Battle Lines Around Definition Of ‘Child Abuse’

A new battle line has emerged between transgender activists and those who oppose sex change procedures for minors. The winner will get to decide what constitutes “child abuse.”

Should the term become codified according to either side’s definitions, doctors could end up in jail and kids from parents on either side could end up in state care, some experts tell the Daily Caller.

Transgender activists argue that without medical intervention to change a child’s sex, or at least delay their puberty, gender dysphoric children could commit suicide. Advocates on the other side of the issue argue that children do not have the mental maturity to make the decision to change their sex, citing medical research indicating that such procedures are irreversible and may not have the mental health benefits some activists claim they have.

The Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth issued recommendations to the state government in May which include classifying a parent’s refusal to provide sex changes to their children as child abuse. In the same month, Texas launched an investigation into a children’s hospital in the state for what the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services considers “child abuse” for allegedly providing sex change procedures to minors.

“With the significant rise in transphobia across the state, the Commission has serious concerns about the wellbeing of trans and gender expansive youth in the home, and advises that the state examine current laws around child abuse and welfare to ensure the unique situations faced by LGBTQ Youth are being addressed,” the commission’s guidelines argued.

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz weighed in on the debate over transgender-identified minors, arguing in April that sex change operations for kids are “child abuse.” Cruz made the comments after Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin was also placed under investigation for allegedly performing sex changes on children as young as eight and nine-years-old.

“I think it’s totally wrong to be charging parents with child abuse,” psychotherapist Dr. Joseph Burgo told the Daily Caller. “If they transition their children because they’re just following medical advice, I think that any parent is going to turn to the experts and ask for guidance when they’re frightened and confused. That just feels cruel and partisan in the worst way to go after the parents.”

“The medical doctors are different, the medical authorities are a different matter,” Burgo continued. “I’m totally in favor of criminalizing pediatric gender medicine because these doctors ought to know better.”

Jack Smith: Highly political and extremely ambitious

Richard Grenell was one of the Donald Trump administration’s brightest stars. The former spokesman to the UN in the George W. Bush administration, Grenell was named ambassador to Germany in 2018, and in 2020 became acting director of National Intelligence where he declassified information that helped expose the Department of Justice’s anti-Trump plot. Lesser known is the role that Grenell played mediating between once warring sides in the Balkans as special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations. And it was in that post where Grenell first came across Jack Smith.

At the time, the special counsel named to investigate the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination was chief prosecutor for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers at the Hague, Netherlands. The international court is charged with investigating crimes committed during the wars that set the former Yugoslavia ablaze during the 1990s. In 2020, as the Trump White House was on the verge of brokering historic agreements between Serbia and Kosovo, Smith arrested the sitting Kosovar president, Hashim Thaci. And now some European leaders are up in arms about the allegedly phony charges against the man Joe Biden once called “the George Washington on Kosovo.”

As Grenell explains, it's a complicated story, but absolutely essential background for understanding the character and the methods of the man the DOJ has designated to lead the 2024 leg of its ongoing campaign to Get Trump. Here’s an edited transcript of my interview with Ambassador Grenell for my Epoch TV show Over the Target.

RG: A lot of Western media outlets are starting to pay attention to this story because the prime minister of Albania was speaking before the Council of Europe and chastising it for allowing the president of Kosovo to remain in jail on trumped-up charges. He's in the Hague. And the president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, has been there for years and the charges are weak and the prosecutor who put him there is Jack Smith.

This is a very dense case. It's not super sexy, it's not going to be able to be told in 30 seconds. You're not going to understand it in one minute. But there's a long history of what's been happening. And I've been involved in it for a very long time.

It seems likely that former President Donald Trump will allege that he declassified the documents that he took to Mar-a-Lago before he left office.

If that claim is presented to the courts, either by legal pleadings or testimony, it will raise several related issues. The first is a question of law, the second is an issue of evidence, and the third is one of procedure.

Let’s begin with the law.

There could be little dispute that a president, while in office, has the power to declassify any previously classified documents or material. As the head of the executive branch, he has the last word on what remains classified or declassified. It is possible, though not beyond dispute, that Congress could constrain that power if it enacted clear legislation.

Some would argue that the Constitution precludes the legislative branch from limiting the power of the executive, but that is moot at the moment because Congress has not enacted statutes that specifically prevent the president from declassifying material.

Some think they should, as a matter of policy, formalize the declassification process so as to make it transparent. But absent such legislation, it seems clear that the authority to classify and declassify is an executive function, and the president is the executive. So if Mr. Trump did declassify documents that were then moved to Mar-a-Lago, mere possession of such documents would not be a crime.

The next question is, did Mr. Trump in fact declassify these documents? If he claims he did, it will be up to the government to challenge that assertion. It could do so in several ways. It could offer evidence designed to disprove Mr. Trump’s claim. But proving a negative — in this case, that he did not declassify the documents — is always difficult.

Theoretically, there could be evidence that Mr. Trump told an associate that he was taking classified material with him, knowing it was still classified. It is extremely unlikely, however, that any such evidence exists.

The government could also claim that absent any evidence either way, it must be presumed that a document once classified remains classified. But that ignores the fact that a statement by Mr. Trump to the contrary, if given under oath, would be evidence. And if Mr. Trump decides not to testify, there may be no admissible evidence either way.

In addition, the government could argue that the circumstantial evidence, especially the failure to announce any declassification until the criminal investigation began, can be weighed against his allegation. This is a weak argument, especially if there is no requirement in the law that declassification be announced or recorded.

These factual disputes would have to be resolved by 12 jurors if the government were to present sufficient evidence to warrant its submission to a jury.

A supervising detective inManhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s case against President Trump has been suspended for his ties to Trump’s former lawyerMichael Cohen.

Jeremy Rosenberg, a detective who investigated financial crimes for Bragg’s office, was suspended for his contact with Cohen, The New York Post reported.

Michael Cohen turned on Trump and testified against the former president to the grand jury.

It is unclear if Jeremy Rosenberg’s suspension will have an impact on the case against Trump.

A supervising detective involved in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s Donald Trump prosecution has been suspended for his contact with the former president’s ex-lawyer and bitter adversary Michael Cohen, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Jeremy Rosenberg, who investigates financial crimes for Bragg, had his gun removed recently for his interactions with Cohen, the sources claimed.

“The office is conducting a review of an investigator’s compliance with internal office protocols,” a Bragg spokeswoman said.

A law enforcement source said Bragg’s office is looking at how Rosenberg shared communications about Cohen with the office.

Cohen’s attorney, Lanny J. Davis said: “The interactions between Mr. Rosenberg, Michael Cohen, and myself were always professional and focused on Mr. Cohen’s personal security, which we appreciated.”

Trump was hit with 34 felony counts in March after Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg sought to ‘get Trump’ in an effort to derail his 2024 presidential bid.

Trump was hit with a criminal charge for every payment he made to his former lawyer Michael Cohen in connection with the ‘hush payments’ to the two women.

Trump was charged with 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records and conspiracy.

The indictment said the payments to the two women were to silence them about the affairs ‘in order to avoid those accounts harming his chances of winning the election over Hillary Clinton.’

The prosecutors said Trump’s so-called ‘crimes’ undermined the 2016 election.

President Trump’s lawyers are trying to move the Stormy ‘hush payment’ case from a state court to a federal court.

Trump’s lawyers believe a move from a state court to a federal court will allow for a more diverse jury pool.

86% of people in Manhattan vote Democrat.

A federal judge will then have to approve whether the case can be moved.

Critics ripped the suspension as an “extremely political” move by soft-on-crime Bragg.

“The only other place I could compare this to is the FBI,” said retired Detective Investigators Association President John Fleming.

Rosenberg also assisted in the prosecution of Steve Bannon in the alleged $15 million border-wall fundraising scam, for which Trump pardoned him. He did not return a call for comment.

And he worked on recent investigations into cryptocurrency and drug dealing on the dark web, Bragg’s office said in an earlier news release.

Bragg indicted Trump earlier this year for a $130,000 hush payment he allegedly made to former porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump a decade earlier.

Cohen turned against Trump and cooperated with Bragg’s investigation into Trump after he went to prison and served home confinement for campaign finance crimes and lying to Congress.

Trump called the indictment “political persecution and election interference at the high levels in history” and referred to Bragg as “a disgrace.” Trump has since sued Cohen for $500 million, alleging he “spread falsehoods” about him and violated a confidentiality agreement.

The Atlantic magazine has declared that the world would be a “boring and sterile” place without the art created by pedophiles, and we should appreciate and support pedophiles who produce good art by buying their books and tickets to see their films.

The article by Judith Shulevitz asserts that it is “Okay to Like Good Art by Bad People” – citing pederasts and pedophiles such as Oscar Wilde and Roman Polanski as those who need representation.

The article even concludes that the depraved behavior is inseparable from the art and that “Art will become sterile, and Beauty will pass away from the land” if we place more importance on morality than art.

In her analysis, Shulevitz primarily explores the book “Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma” by Claire Dederer, which delves into the question of whether people should still appreciate the creations of morally flawed individuals.

The readers are confronted with the notion that art can surpass the moral character of its creators, no matter how corrupted and evil they may be.

Shulevitz specifically focuses on Oscar Wilde, the Anglo-Irish author and libertine, who is often celebrated as an LGBTQ icon due to his conviction for “gross indecency” relating to his involvement in homosexual activities with underage boys.

To her at least partial credit, Shulevitz concedes that Wilde was more than an innocent victim of Victorian bigotry, as he did not just “sleep with men” but with “rent boys” and what she dubiously describes as “teenage boys picked up for brief trysts.”

The detail is more unpleasant than she wishes to disclose, however, with Wilde accused at trial of having been caught with a 14-year-old boy in his bed at the Savoy Hotel, of “seducing” a boy aged 16, and of taking advantage of a serving boy the same age – Wilde’s defense in court was that the servant in question was “very ugly” – among other depredations.

“Fifteen and most sweet… every day I kissed him behind the high altar,” he said of one of his child lovers, Giuseppe Loverde, in a lecherous letter penned in Sicily not long before his death aged 46.

Polanski and the “13-year-old party girls”

Shulevitz also discusses Roman Polanski, the French-born three-time Oscar winner, who has been a fugitive from the American justice system since the 1970s, when he plied a 13-year-old girl with alcohol and drugs at Jack Nicholson’s house and sodomized her.

Hollywood coddled the 89-year-old pedophile for decades, with Quentin Tarantino, for example, saying he did not believe “13-year-old party girls” should be considered victims as recently as 2003.

In conclusion, Shulevitz returns to the words of Wilde himself to justify indulging in the works of such men, whether unquestionably guilty or under a cloud of suspicion.

“I don’t believe you can separate [Wilde’s] aestheticism or his buoyant writing from his role as a sexual nonconformist,” Shulevitz says – a curious way to reframe his pedophilic taste in underage boys – and recommends we “heed his warning about the consequences of a triumph of morality over art: ‘Art will become sterile, and Beauty will pass away from the land.’”

Several drones tried to attack Crimea – local leader

A crashed UAV has damaged property in the city of Dzhankoy in the north of the peninsula, Sergey Aksyonov says

Five drones were shot down overnight over Russia’s Crimea, and four others were interceptedby means of electronic warfare and forced to land, the region’s leader Sergey Aksyonov has said.

One of the destroyed UAVs crashed in the city of Dzhankoy in the north of the peninsula, Aksyonov said. Windows were shattered in three homes and several cars as a result, he added.

Anotherunexploded unmanned aircraft was discoveredon the territory of a private house, according to the Crimean leader. Some 50 people had to be evacuated from the area before the drone was deactivated, he wrote.

“There were no casualties or injuries as a result of the overnight attack. I ask everyone to remain calm and trust only reliable sources of information,” Aksyonov said.

Crimea and its largest city, Sevastopol, which hosts Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, have been frequently targeted by Ukrainian aerial and naval drones since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022.

A week ago, six UAVs were intercepted using electronic warfare, or shot down above the peninsula. In early May, at least ten drones targeted Sevastopol, but the assault was repelled by Russian forces.

Several UAVs were shot down in Dzhankoy in March, an incident that left one person wounded and caused damage to property. Back then, Aksyonov’s aide Oleg Kryuchkov insisted that there were no military installations near the affected area.

For months, Ukraine has been building up to a major counteroffensive that it claims will seek to recapture all territories lost to Russia, including Crimea, which overwhelmingly voted to join the Russian state in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev.

US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland claimed a few months ago that Washington was “supporting”Ukrainian attempts to strike targets in Crimea. The peninsula has been turned into a military base with command posts, logistics depots and airfields by Moscow and has to be “demilitarized,” she insisted.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as deputy head of the country’s Security Council, earlier suggested that threats against Crimea by Ukrainian officials were just “propaganda.”

However, he warned that if the peninsula is actually attacked, it could become “the basis for the use of all means of protection, including those provided for by the fundamentals of the doctrine of nuclear deterrence.”

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius wants Beijing to end its alleged policy of recruiting ex-Bundeswehr pilots

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said that he warned his Chinese counterpart, General Li Shangfu, against using former Bundeswehr pilots to train the Chinese military.

“I have made it clear that I expect this policy to be stopped immediately,” Pistorius told reporters at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore on Saturday, as quoted by Reuters.

Berlin’s defense chief claimed that Li did not deny the practice of hiring former German pilots, but downplayed its significance. According to Der Spiegel magazine, the meeting between Pistorius and Li, which was scheduled to last 30 minutes, went on for more than an hour.

German media previously reported thatformer Bundeswehr service members have been finding jobs in Chinathrough companies in South Africa and New Zealand and werebeing paid large salariesto pass their knowledge to Chinese pilots.

Der Spiegel described one such supposed case on Friday. According to the publication, a retired officer referred to as Alexander H., who used to train pilots to operate the Eurofighter Typhoon in Germany, was thought to have moved to China, where he allegedly trained pilots at an air base in Qiqihar.

“The fact that former Air Force officers are training fighter pilots in China is an outrage. We can’t accept this,” Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the parliamentary defense committee, told Der Spiegel.

Beijing has not commented on the matter. However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin denied knowledge of such employment last year when responding to similar allegations made by the UK.

In 2022, Britain’s defense ministry said it would take measures against potential employment of former RAF service members in China.Australia said last year that it would investigate reports of its own retired Air Force pilotstraining Chinese military personnel.

Relations between China and NATO have deteriorated significantly in recent years as both sides accuse each other of stoking tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The US-led alliance has described Beijing as a threat, while China accused the West of having a “Cold War mentality.”

Igor Zhovkva urges EU countries to do more to help Kiev in the fight against Moscow

Ukraine needs more weapons and ammunition to be able to carry out a successful counteroffensive against the Russian forces, the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky’s office has said.

In an interview with British newspaper The Times on Saturday, Igor Zhovkva was asked why the much-anticipated operation by Ukraine, aimed at retaking land lost to Russia, still hasn’t been launched.

“If you want to start a successful counteroffensive you need everything at your disposal, including artillery, armored vehicles and tanks,so probably we don’t have enough,”he replied.

“More weapons is the No 1 topic in each and every conversation” that Zelensky had during his numerous foreign trips over the past month, Zhovkva, who is also the Ukrainian president’s top foreign affairs adviser, stressed.

“Every country knows what kind of weapons we need from them, to protect our territory, stop the rockets,” the official added.

He also suggested that Russia has intensified its missile and drone campaign across Ukraine in recent months in a bid to deter the offensive by Kiev’s troops, which was expected to begin in spring.

The UK “now is one of the leading countries in showing real incentive and courage in how to really bring victory to my country,” he stated, adding that other nations need to do more to assist Kiev.

“Sorry, but the European countries are still too slow and not doing enough with sanctions”against Russia, Zhovkva insisted.

Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal on Saturday that the Ukrainian military was“ready” for the counteroffensive, but did not say when exactly it will start.

He also pointed out that Kiev would have wanted to see more weapons provided by the West, but that “we can’t wait for months” to launch the assault.

Among other things,Ukraine needs 50 US-made Patriot air defensebatteries to sufficiently protect its cities and troops on the battlefield ahead of the counteroffensive, Zelensky said.

With the price ofa single Patriot battery estimated at $1.1 billion, the overall cost of the demand would be around $55 billion, which is more than the total amount of American military aid allocated to Kiev since the start of the conflict.

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that Russia’s air superiority would leaveKiev’s troops exposed and “a large number of soldiers will die” during the counteroffensive.

Kiev’s aircraft, radar installations and ammo depots have been hit, the Russian military says

Russia conducted airstrikes overnight targeting Ukrainian military airfields, and delivering significant damage to aircraft and facilities, Moscow’s Defense Ministry has said.

The attack, which was carried with the use of“long-range precision-guided air-launched weapons,” achieved its goal, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

“Command posts, a radar installation, Ukrainian aviation equipment, and storage facilities with weapons and ammunition were hit,” the statement read.

In another strike, near the city of Dnepropetrovsk on the Dnepr River, a Ukrainian drone assembly workshop was destroyed, the ministry said.

Over the past 24 hours, Russian air defenses have shot downtwo UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles, 14 rockets fired from US-made HIMARS and Soviet-era Uragan multiple rocket launchers, as well as two Tochka-U tactical missiles, fired by the Ukrainian forces, according to the statement.

Atotal of 21 drones have also been interceptedin Russia’s Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the country’s Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, and over the Black Sea, the ministry added.

In a recent document dump delivered to the presiding judge, more than 250 extra gigabytes of files related to the surveillance of the founder of WikiLeaks were included — far more than what was initially presented by police

David Morales — the owner of the Spanish security company that spied on Julian Assange during his prolonged stay at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London — kept the work he did for the CIA on his laptop. It was all marked under the initials of the U.S. intelligence agency, according to a new examination of his MacBook, to which EL PAÍS has had access to. The word “CIA” appears several times on a Western Digital-branded external hard drive, on which Morales kept the projects and operations that his company — UC Global, S.L. — was contracted to deliver.

Morales’ personal files, which were previously unknown to investigators, builds on the allegations and evidence that Morales — a former Spanish soldier — spied on the meetings that the WikiLeaks founder and his lawyers held at the Embassy of Ecuador to the United Kingdom, and sent that information to the U.S. intelligence agency. These files were stored on a number of folders marked with the terms “CIA,” “Embassy” and “Videos,” along with other labels.

The appearance of this new evidence has been a surprise in the case against Morales in Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional. None of these computer records previously appeared in the initial copy made by the police, when officers categorized the material seized from the security contractor when he was arrested in September 2019. All of this material was uploaded to a cloud storage system within the judicial systems, so that all parties involved in the case could review it. The arrest and indictment of Morales took place weeks after an investigation by EL PAÍS revealed the videos and audios that UC Global employees had recorded while the Australian was preparing his defense with his lawyers.

The discovery of these new clues about the CIA’s spying on the cyberactivist — who remains imprisoned in a London jail — is no accident. Assange’s lawyers found problems when downloading the records uploaded to the cloud. They managed to get Judge Santiago Pedraz — who is overseeing the case — to authorize a second copy of the material seized by the agents. A new digital document dump offered a clear picture that the police had not pieced together. Now, a report by the experts called by Assange’s lawyers credits the appearance of “a very relevant volume of material, which was not included in the original [police] copy.” Forensic analysis describes the copy of the hard drive as containing “multiple pieces of evidence.” In this second dump, the mentioned folders have appeared, including the one that UC Global labelled as “CIA.”

The work has helped in the development of mRNA coronavirus vaccines and the first approved covid drug.

In May, the longtime coronavirus researcher Ralph Baric found himself at the center of the swirling debate over gain-of-function research, in which scientists engineer new properties into existing viruses. And during a congressional hearing, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky implied that the National Institutes of Health had been funding such research at both the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Baric’s University of North Carolina lab, and that the two labs had been collaborating to make “superviruses.”

Baric released a statement clarifying that according to the NIH, the research in question did not qualify as gain-of-function, none of the SARS-like coronaviruses he’d used in the experiments were closely related to SARS-CoV-2 (the original virus behind the covid pandemic), and his collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology had been minimal.

Yet that did little to quell questions about the role Baric’s research may have played in furthering scientists’ ability to modify coronaviruses in potentially dangerous ways. Such questions have dogged Baric since 2014, when he became the reluctant spokesperson for gain-of-function research after the NIH declared a moratorium on such experiments until their safety could be assessed, temporarily halting his work.

Baric believes such research is essential to the development of vaccines and other countermeasures against emerging viruses, a project he has been engaged in for more than 20 years. That work has made him the country’s foremost expert on coronaviruses, and his high-security UNC lab has been a center of the US response to the pandemic, testing numerous drug candidates for other labs that lack the biosafety clearance or the expertise.

His research laid the groundwork for the first approved anti-covid drug and helped speed the development of the mRNA vaccines that have proved so pivotal. Recently, his lab announced the creation of the world’s first pan-coronavirus mRNA vaccine.

Yet Baric also pioneered the reverse-genetics techniques that have allowed other researchers, including those at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, to engineer viruses with altered functions. Some scientists fear that the technique, which allow coronaviruses to be recreated from their genetic code, could engender a future pandemic, and other critics, like Senator Paul, imply they might have led to the creation or release of SARS-CoV-2.

MIT Technology Review recently asked Baric to explain what constitutes a gain-of-function experiment, why such research exists, and whether it could have played any role in the pandemic. The interview has been edited and shortened for clarity.
