Kohl’s has become the latest major retailer that shoppers have found selling LGBT pride clothing and products for infants and children.

Among the merchandise for LGBT pride month in June, the department store’s website includes a "Baby Sonoma Community Pride Bodysuit set" for young children from age 3 months to 2 years. The outfit includes a lesbian couple with a dog and three children, one of whom is in a wheelchair, and one of the women is holding an LGBT pride flag.

Additional merchandise includes the "Love Is Love" phrase on pillows, bibs, shorts, candles, a banner, and towels, Fox News reported. There are also shirts with phrases on them such as "Be Proud" and "Ask Me My Pronouns."

Multiple social media accounts highlighted and criticized the merchandise. The Twitter account "End Wokeness" posted pictures of some of the merchandise, with the caption, “Kohl’s is pushing LGBTQ Pride for literal babies.”

TPUSA contributor and influencer Morgonn tweeted a video about the merchandise, captioning it with, “Kohls’s with the PRIDE BABY clothes… stop targeting children it’s gross. #BoycottTarget was the beginning here’s another to add to the list. #PrideMonth.”

Kohl’s became the latest major retailer criticized for LGBT merchandise for kids after calls for boycotting Target began for the same reason.

Target attracted bad press over a week ago for offering LGBT-themed items for children, which include children's clothing, books, and dog toys. Among the most controversial were "tuck-friendly" swimsuits.

Target's shares have since fallen, making the company lose more than $10 billion in market value in just over a week. The stock losses come after the retail giant made headlines for selling Pride-themed items such as children's clothing, dog toys and books.

Kohl's stock has sunk over 50% over the last year, according to Fox News.

In early conversations, the retailer told Carnell that the “Satan respects pronouns,” design would not be a good fit, he said. The designs that ended up for sale are of a more neutral tone, with the phrases “Cure transphobia, not trans people,” “We belong everywhere,” and “Too queer for here.”

Still, Carnell was not surprised when the partnership caused a backlash (though he didn’t expect it to be this bad).

“I’m not naive. I absolutely knew that there would be negativity thrown my way,” he said. “I understand that people are incredibly passionate with their hatred towards LGBT people. And the current political climate is one that tells those people that they are correct to feel that way,” he said.

Special agent in charge of FBI Boston Division to retire

FBI Boston Division’s Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta will be retiring on June 9, ending his 27-year career.

Bonavolonta has served as the special agent in charge for the FBI Boston Division since January 2019. He is also the Director of National Intelligence’s representative for the New England region.

Bonavolonta began his career at the FBI in May 1996 as an investigative specialist in the FBI’s New York Field Office. Four years later became a special agent at the New York Field Office. He has also worked at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Newark Field Office, and the Boston Division.

His father was a special agent in the FBI, serving 24 years, and a key source of inspiration for Bonavolonta to join the law enforcement agency, he wrote in a letter to FBI Boston staff announcing his retirement.

During Bonavolonta’s time at the FBI, he investigated the Bonanno La Cosa Nostra Family, which won him the Attorney General’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance in 2005.

“I have had many positive assignments throughout my career but serving all of you as special agent in charge has been one of the most rewarding,” Bonavolonta wrote in his announcement letter to FBI Boston.

Bonavolonta’s replacement hasn’t been announced but will be appointed by Director Christopher Wray.

“Simply put, it is time to devote more time to the people who have made the most sacrifices on my behalf, and that is my family, and I look forward to pursuing new endeavors in the private sector,” Bonavolonta said.

Scorsese, cinema’s most mainstream Catholic director, angered Catholics globally with his 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ

Martin Scorsese may follow his acclaimed crime epic about the killing of Native Americans in the US in the 1920s with another film about Jesus Christ, reports suggest.

Scorsese, fresh from a rapturous reception for his Killers of the Flower Moon at the Cannes film festival, is currently in Italy attending a series of religious and cinematic events.

Speaking at a conference at the Vatican on Saturday, Scorsese, 80, said: “I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.”

He added: “And I’m about to start making it.”

Representatives for Scorsese told The Guardian they had no further information on the project other than that the director had already provided. Publicists for Mel Gibson recently rejected suggestions that he was about to shoot a sequel to The Passion of the Christ, his 2004 blockbusting depiction of the crucifixion.

Scorsese and his wife, Helen Morris, were in Rome attending a conference entitled The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination and briefly met Pope Francis.

Antonio Spadaro, editor of Jesuit publication La Civiltà Cattolica, who co-organised the conference, reported on its website that Scorsese had mixed references to his films with personal anecdotes, as well as explaining “how the Holy Father’s appeal ‘to let us see Jesus’ moved him”.

It is believed Scorsese reiterated his passion for Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St Matthew during the conference, as well as discussing his own works including 1988’s The Last Temptation of Christ as well as Silence, about the persecution of Jesuit Christians in 17th-century Japan.

In 2016, Scorsese screened the film in Rome and had a first meeting with Pope Francis, who himself joined the Jesuits in the hope of becoming a missionary in Japan.

The encounter marked a thawing in relations between the Vatican and perhaps cinema’s most acclaimed mainstream Catholic director, who himself considered joining the priesthood as a boy.

In 1988, The Last Temptation of Christ angered many conservative Catholics for its depiction of Jesus (played by Willem Dafoe) as a man torn between God and earthly pleasures. The film included a dream sequence in which he has sex with Mary Magdalene.

Covid-19 vaccination can induce multiple sclerosis via cross-reactive CD4+ T cells recognizing SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and myelin peptides

Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can lead to a wide range of acute and also chronic disease manifestations. The rapidly developed vaccinations are highly effective in preventing severe disease courses and have been proven safe. Both natural infection and, to a much lower extent, the mRNAbased vaccinations can be accompanied by transient autoimmune phenomena or onset of autoimmune diseases.

Objective(s) We report here two cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) with clinical and new radiological signs beginning in close temporal relation to spike (S) protein mRNA-based vaccinations.

Aim(s) To establish that the onset of MS in these two cases is very likely caused by CD4+ T cell clones that cross-recognize SARSCoV- 2 S protein-derived peptides and peptides derived from myelin proteins, which have previously been implicated in MS.

Method(s) Spike specific CD4+ T cells from peripheral blood and CD4+ T cells from CSF sample were isolated and expanded for autoantigen screening test. A list of well-known MS-related autoantigens including immunodominant peptides and isoforms from MBP, MOG, PLP, RASGRP2, TSTA3 peptides were included to assess T cell reactivity. CD4+ CFSElow fraction were sorted after stimulate with positive autoantigen pools or SARSCov- 2 Spike protein, followed by expansion and testing with autoantigen peptides and Spike protein. Supernatant from cell culture were further analyzed for IFN-gamma secretion.

Result(s) Self-reactive T cells were detected from Spike specific T cell population in both patients. CD4+ T from CSF also showed reactivity to MBP, MOG, PLP peptide pools. Finally, we found proinflammatory T cell clones that recognize both Spike protein and immunodominant MBP peptides and MOG peptides, which have previously been implicated in MS.

Conclusion(s) Detailed studies of both peripheral blood- and CSFderived CD4+ T cells show that the onset of MS in these two cases is very likely caused by CD4+ T cell clones that cross-recognize SARS-CoV-2 S protein-derived peptides and peptides derived from myelin proteins, which have previously been implicated in MS.

The platform has until August 25 to comply with the bloc’s new disinformation law

Twitter will be banned across the EU if it fails to abide by the new regulations on fighting disinformation, French Digital Transition and Telecommunications Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Monday. The warning comes as the European bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA) is due to fully take effect on August 25.

“Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies,” Barrot told France Info radio. “I hope that Twitter complies with the European rules by August 25. Otherwise, it will no longer be welcome in Europe. Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn’t follow our rules, will be banned from the EU.”

The DSA mandates that search engines and large platforms, such as Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, enact measures to mitigate “disinformation or election manipulation, cyber violence against women, or harms to minors online.” The European Commission can fine offenders up to 6% of annual worldwide turnover.

EU Internal Markets Commissioner Thierry Breton announced last week that Twitter had pulled out of the bloc’s voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation.

“But obligations remain. You can run but you can’t hide,” Breton said, adding that DSA’s terms will be “ready for enforcement” when the compliance deadline expires in August.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter last year, promised to rid the platform of disinformation and hateful content, but also uphold the freedom of speech and offer more transparency. “This platform is hell bent on being the least untrue source of information,”Musk wrote on Twitter in early May.

At the same time, earlier this month Twitter fulfilled the Turkish government’s request to restrict access to some accounts in the weeks leading up to the presidential and general election in the country. Musk defended this decision by saying that he wanted to avoid Twitter getting shut down entirely in Türkiye.

“We can’t go beyond the laws of a country … If we have a choice of either our people [going] to prison or we comply with the laws, we will comply with the laws,” Musk told the BBC last month.

Multiple sclerosis and myelin basic protein: insights into protein disorder and disease

Abstract

Myelin basic protein (MBP) is an abundant protein in central nervous system (CNS) myelin. MBP has long been studied as a factor in the pathogenesis of the autoimmune neurodegenerative disease multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is characterized by CNS inflammation, demyelination, and axonal loss. One of the main theories on the pathogenesis of MS suggests that exposure to foreign antigens causes the activation of cross-reactive T cells in genetically susceptible individuals, with MBP being a possible autoantigen. While a direct role for MBP as a primary antigen in human MS is unclear, it is clear that MBP and its functions in myelin formation and long-term maintenance are linked to MS. Target VP Was Board Member for K-12 Transgender Advocacy Group

Target’s shareholders lost $9 billion in stock market value because the C-suite mixed its professional duties with its personal agendas, including advocacy for transgenderism.

The poster boy for this high-risk policy is Target’s vice president for brand marketing, Carlos Saavedra. He moonlights as a board member of an advocacy group for K-12 transgenderism and gay status. The group, titled GLSEN, is an acronym chosen by the teachers who formed the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network in 1990.

Target’s website says Saavedra “leads Target brand stewardship & campaign development for initiatives including Holiday, Back-to-School/College, Target Run, Discovery, Inclusive Marketing, and Digital & Social Engagement.”

That description portrays Saavedra as the retail version of Bud Light’s Alissa Heinerscheid, who wrecked the company’s Bug Light business by trying to rebrand the blue-collar beer around transgender advocate Dylan Mulvaney.

But Target’s managers collectively created their own disaster when they hired their deputies and placed pro-transgender and gay advocacy products in prominent displays at the front of the stores.

In response, the company’s core customers of married suburban moms have rationally mobilized against Target.

The mobilization is happening because many people feel increasingly alarmed by elite advocacy for transgenderism by the government, businesses, news media, and commercial entertainment. But the mobilization is also possible because the public now has social media networks that allow anti-elite boycotts to become a shared, profitable, affirming, and amusing middle-class mission.

Target says little about Saavedra, who may carefully segregate his day job at Target from his advocacy at GLSEN.

But Saavedra joined Target in July 2019 after working at PepsiCo for almost 18 years, where he led efforts to sell more products to Hispanics and other cultural subgroups. A 2005 article in SeaCoastOnline.com suggests Saavedra is also an advocate for sexual minorities:

CHICAGO — Carlos Saavedra came out to a colleague soon after he started working at Quaker Foods four years ago, reassured by seeing gay and lesbian employees climbing the ladder at the Chicago company.

“You can bring your whole self to work rather than seeming isolated and distant because you can’t talk about what you do outside work,” said the 25-year-old assistant marketing manager.

The first person he told at work was the former chair of EQUAL-Quaker, the company’s affinity group. Now he chairs that group as well as its umbrella organization, EQUAL-PepsiCo.

He works alongside Jennifer Breeden Okun, the senior vice president for design and packaging at Target. She touts her identity as a pro-transgender “She/Her” on LinkedIn, where she also displays the merged symbols of Target and gay advocacy.

But the pro-transgender advocacy is also coming from the top of the company.

Imagine this.

A woman, for the sake of my story, is in a marriage with a partner who does not respect her. He insults her regularly, belittles her efforts to improve herself or her situation, and minimizes her feelings.

In fact, when she tries to stand up for herself, things get even worse. The partner calls into question her memories of the event. He dismisses the way things made her feel, calling the emotions “ridiculous” or “stupid.” He convinces her she’s overreacting and that he was only trying to do what was best for her. When she brings something up, he completely rewrites the event, causing her to doubt what actually happened because she’s in a vulnerable state due to the constant abuse.

In a situation like this, the abused partner often feels powerless, confused, and unable to leave the situation. They are at a disadvantage because they’ve been influenced to doubt their own reality. This leaves them trapped deeper and deeper in the abusive scenario. They feel unable to escape because they’re really not sure what actually happened. Were they blowing things out of proportion? Are they, in fact, stupid, forgetful, and inept?

Abusive relationships follow a pattern. There’s a period of breaking the victim down, isolating them from their support systems, and making them dependent on the abuser. Then, the abused partner is maneuvered into the belief that she can’t get by on her own.

This master manipulation is how people become trapped in abusive relationships.

And, as I’m about to show, not all abusive relationships are one-on-one romantic relationships.

What is gaslighting?

Medical News Today defines gaslighting.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse in which a person or group causes someone to question their own sanity, memories, or perception of reality. People who experience gaslighting may feel confused, anxious, or as though they cannot trust themselves.

The term “gaslighting” comes from the 1944 classic film (and before that, the play), Gaslight. In the story, a husband tries to make his wife believe she is suffering from a mental illness. Starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, it’s well worth a watch.

Two Italian intelligence agents and a retired Israeli security forces member were among four victims of Sunday's boating disaster on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, local officials say.

They named the Italians as Claudio Alonzi, 62, and Tiziana Barnobi, 53. The Israeli was identified as Shimoni Erez, 50.

Anya Bozhkova, the 50-year-old Russian wife of the boat's captain, also died.

The vessel with more than 20 tourists and crew sank in strong winds.

According to Italian news outlets, the boat had been carrying about 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake, later turning into a "small hurricane".

The 16m (52ft) long boat capsized and sank on Sunday evening between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona.

Everyone onboard went into the water, but many of the passengers swam ashore or were rescued by other boats.

Rescue divers and a helicopter scrambled to help with the search at the lake's southern end, and several ambulances and an air ambulance attended the scene.

A video shared by firefighters showed chairs and other debris floating in choppy waters.

Five people were taken to hospital.

Lake Maggiore - on the south side of the Alps - is shared by Italy and Switzerland and is a popular destination for tourists.

The area has recently seen poor weather, with Italy's meteorological service issuing thunderstorm warnings.

China rejects Pentagon meeting request

The US has been trying to arrange a face-to-face conversation between Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu

China has rejected Washington’s proposal that their respective defense chiefs meet this week, the Pentagon said on Monday. The news comes amid a renewed diplomatic spat between the two countries.

“Overnight, the PRC informed the US that they have declined our early May invitation for Secretary [Lloyd] Austin to meet with PRC Minister of National Defense Li Shangfu in Singapore,” the Pentagon said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

“The Department believes strongly in the importance of maintaining open lines of military-to-military communication between Washington and Beijing to ensure that competition does not veer into conflict,” the statement read.

The WSJ cited an unnamed US defense official as saying thatChina’s dismissal was “an unusually blunt message.”

According to the report, the Pentagon had wanted the meeting to take place on the sidelines of theannual Shangri-La Dialogue security forum. Li will speak at the event as part of his trip to Singapore from May 31 to June 4, the Chinese Defense Ministry said.

The Pentagon said last week that attempts to establish contacts with their Chinese counterparts in recent months have failed.

The Financial Times reported this month that Beijing told Washington that there was“little chance” for a meeting between Li and Austinbecause of thesanctions placed on the Chinese defense minister over his alleged role in the purchase of Russian weapons. Li was appointed to his current position in March, replacing Wei Fenghe.

Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry cast doubt on the sincerity of Washington’s willingness to engage in dialogue while simultaneously “seeking to suppress China through all possible means” and imposing restrictions on Chinese officials and entities.

At a summit in Hiroshima, Japan earlier this month, the G7 released a joint statement with alitany of accusationsagainst China, including “economic coercion,” human rights abuses, and the inciting of tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Beijing accused the US-led group of countries of trying to impose their will on others and meddling in China’s domestic affairs.

Is this what will become of our Sun? Quite possibly. The first hint of our Sun's future was discovered inadvertently in 1764. At that time, Charles Messier was compiling a list of diffuse objects not to be confused with comets. The 27th object on Messier's list, now known as M27 or the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula, one of the brightest planetary nebulae on the sky and visible with binoculars toward the constellation of the Fox (Vulpecula). It takes light about 1000 years to reach us from M27, featured here in colors emitted by sulfur (red), hydrogen (green) and oxygen (blue). We now know that in about 6 billion years, our Sun will shed its outer gases into a planetary nebula like M27, while its remaining center will become an X-ray hot white dwarf star. Understanding the physics and significance of M27 was well beyond 18th century science, though. Even today, many things remain mysterious about planetary nebulas, including how their intricate shapes are created.

A new crew of three astronauts is on its way to China's Tiangong space station.

A Long March 2F rocket launched the Shenzhou 16 crew spacecraft from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert today (May 29) at 9:31 p.m. EDT (0131 GMT; 9:31 p.m. local time on May 30). Spacecraft separation occurred around 10 minutes later, according to the China National Space Administration, which declared the launch "a complete success."

Jing Haipeng (the mission's commander) and rookies Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao —  the first members of a third astronaut selection group to fly to space  —  are set to spend six months aboard the Tiangong space station. CNSA officials announced the crew just one day before launch.

Jing Haipeng is a veteran of the Shenzhou 7, 9 and 11 missions, while Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao are heading to orbit for the first time. Zhu is a spaceflight engineer and was selected in China's third batch of astronauts in 2020. Gui is also from the third astronaut group and will be China's first payload specialist to fly to Tiangong.

"It is a great honor for me to serve as the commander for the third time. This time, I am mainly responsible for organization and coordination, including space-Earth communication and mission command," Jing told reporters in the press conference. "In particular, I have to ensure the safety of the mission and our crew."

After reaching orbit and docking with Tiangong, the crew will be greeted aboard the space station by the outpost's current Shenzhou 15 crew. Mission commander Fei Junlong and crewmates Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu have been aboard Tiangong since November and will hand over control of the space station to the new crew before returning home in early June.

China completed its three-module Tiangong in late 2022 and aims to keep the orbital outpost permanently occupied for at least a decade. The station is about 20% as massive as the International Space Station, according to Chinese space officials.

The country is also looking to see foreign astronauts travel to Tiangong, as well as open the space station to potential tourist visits.

Earlier this month China also launched the Tianzhou 6 cargo spacecraft to Tiangong to deliver supplies for the six-month-long Shenzhou 16 mission, as well as science experiments, equipment and propellant for the space station to maintain its orbit.

The lawsuit is from a woman who says a former boyfriend posted sexually explicit videos on her when she was a minor. She says she alerted Reddit only to see the videos reposted days later.
