First Two 'Flurona' Cases Detected In US: Officials

A Los Angeles County COVID testing site confirmed the first local case of “flurona,” or influenza combined with the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus that causes COVID, coming after a teen in Texas confirmed he was diagnosed with the two viruses.

Authorities at the 911 COVID testing site in Brentwood, California, confirmed a child tested positive for COVID and influenza A. The boy’s mother also tested positive for COVID.

“It was a family visiting from Mexico, from Cabo San Lucas,” Steve Farzam, the head of 911 COVID Testing, told KNBC-TV. “Some very mild symptoms, almost could be easily confused with sinusitis."

The pair had recently returned from a vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the company said.

Farzam said the child did not require hospitalization and went home with their parents after the testing was completed.

The Epoch Times has contacted the Los Angeles County Department of Health, which has not yet commented on the diagnosis.

COVID and the flu are two respiratory diseases caused by separate viruses.

In Houston, Texas, a 17-year-old boy told ABC13 that he was diagnosed with both COVID and the flu but said it was mild.

“I ended up getting tested the day before Christmas for strep throat, flu, and COVID,” said Alex Zierlein.

“I didn’t think I had any of the three. It felt like a mild cold."

Reports last week said a pregnant woman in Israel tested positive for COVID and the flu. The unidentified woman was diagnosed with the rare double infection when she arrived last week at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikvah, officials told the Times of Israel.

“She was diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived,” said Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the hospital’s Gynecology Department, told the Hamodia news outlet.

“Both tests came back positive, even after we checked again,” he continued, adding that “the disease is the same disease. They’re viral and cause difficulty breathing since both attack the upper respiratory tract."

Jan 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday revived a lawsuit against AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L), Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and other companies over allegations their contracts with Iraq's health ministry helped fund terrorism that killed Americans during the war in Iraq.

The plaintiffs contend that the militia group Jaysh al-Mahdi, sponsored by Hezbollah, controlled Iraq's health ministry and that the 21 defendant U.S. and European medical equipment and pharmaceutical companies made corrupt payments to obtain medical-supply contracts.

Representatives from the five corporate groups - AstraZeneca, GE Healthcare USA Holding, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) Pfizer and Hoffmann-La Roche Inc said in a joint statement "further proceedings will show the companies are not responsible in any way."

The lawsuit revived by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit was brought by family members of victims of attacks in Iraq by the Mahdi group. A federal trial judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2020.

Lawyer Kannon Shanmugam, who argued the appeal on behalf of the companies, did not immediately comment.

The lawyer for the family members, Joshua Branson, also did not immediately comment.

Lawyers for the companies told the appeals court that they provided the Iraqi government "life-saving breast cancer treatments, hemophilia injections, ultrasounds, electrocardiogram machines, and other medical goods" after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled strongman president Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Shanmugam said in court in September that a ruling against the companies "would have a severe chilling effect on the willingness of companies and non-governmental organizations to conduct essential activities, often at the government's request, in troubled regions

China’s state-run Global Times on Monday gloated that Twitter’s ban of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) proves the Chinese Communist Party’s point that “freedom of speech” is an illusion, so Americans are hypocrites for criticizing China’s vast censorship apparatus.

Rep. Greene’s personal account was permanently suspended from Twitter on Sunday for “repeated violations of our [Chinese coronavirus] misinformation policy,” according to the company. The tweet that prompted Greene’s suspension included a chart of allegedly high “Covid vaccine deaths” that was based on “unverified data” and drawn in a misleading way. Facebook suspended Greene’s page soon after Twitter took action against her.

To the Global Times, these bans – plus Twitter’s suspension of Donald Trump’s account when he was the sitting president of the United States – were proof that America is hypocritical for objecting to China’s supposedly more rational and orderly system of state-imposed censorship:

“From Trump to Greene, the permanent ban on their personal Twitter account indicates that in the US, there is no absolute freedom of speech either. There are clear boundaries on freedom of speech. The voices must conform to laws and regulations and cannot impair national interests,” [China Foreign Affairs University professor Li Haidong] said.

But the US has played the old trick of double standards on freedom of speech. Chinese social media platforms’ suspension of some personal accounts, or the closure of some media outlets in Hong Kong such as the Apply Daily comes from the same considerations taken when Twitter banned Trump and Greene – their contents violated China’s law and regulations and posed potential threats to national security, social stability and normal order.

Ironically, when banning these personal accounts, the US defends its actions with a legitimate explanation; while China adopts similar practices, Washington portrays them as “suppressing speech freedom,” or committing “human rights violations.” Applying double standards in such a way is despicable.

NYU professor of bioethics Arthur Caplan, a guest on CNN Wednesday, said it is time to “shame” and “blame” unvaccinated Americans, adding that society should “penalize” them in a variety of ways, including higher hospital bills and insurance premiums.

“By and large, if you’re vaccinated and boosted, even if you get infected, you’re going to be fine. You’re going to be fine here. It’s the unvaccinated who are going to be hurt so why should anyone who is boosted bother at this point to do anything that makes the unvaccinated more safe?” CNN’s John Berman asked.

“I want us to act as a community. I want us to act as a team. We’re fighting a war and need all hands on deck. I don’t want to reject those who still haven’t done the right thing. I’ll condemn them. I’ll shame them. I’ll blame them, but I don’t want to exclude them,” Caplan replied, before detailing his desire to “penalize” unvaccinated Americans and implement more coercive tactics to corner them into getting the shot.

They’ve got to come around. Were not going to win this war — we’re going to be talking about COVID this time next year if we don’t get more people to do the right thing. So we can’t write them off. We can penalize them more. We can say you will have to pay more on your hospital bill. You can’t get life insurance or disability insurance at affordable rates if you aren’t vaccinated. Those companies should not treat us as equals in terms of what the financial burdens are that that disease imposes.

Berman responded by scolding unvaccinated individuals, contending, “It’s the unvaccinated who aren’t wearing masks. It’s the unvaccinated who aren’t social distancing. It’s the unvaccinated going to crowded indoor events.

“So there’s this bizarre irony where the ones who are behaving are the ones being told to behave 10 times more so,” he added.

Covid panic grips Europe as Italy makes vaccines COMPULSORY for everyone over-50'

A draft decree revealed the measure on Wednesday while a cabinet meeting on new curbs was still ongoing.

According to the document, which has been seen by Reuters, the measure would be immediately effective and run until June 15.

If confirmed, it would make Italy one of a very few European countries to take similar steps.

AG Letitia James better have good justification for her investigation.

One feature that distinguishes the U.S. legal system from, say, Russia’s, is that prosecutors are charged with pursuing justice—not politically disfavored individuals or families. New York Attorney General Letitia James’s legal pursuit of Donald Trump, his organization and his children, now entering its fourth calendar year, smacks of the latter. She’s now trying to compel testimony from two of the former President’s children, and there had better be rock-solid evidence of significant wrongdoing at the end of this road to justify the corrosive appearance of politicized justice.

Ms. James’s investigation, according to a 2020 court filing, focuses on whether Mr. Trump or others “improperly inflated the value of [his] assets on annual financial statements in order to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits.”

The Attorney General’s recent subpoena of Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, which they are trying to quash, seeks information “in connection with an investigation into the valuation of properties owned or controlled by Donald J. Trump or the Trump Organization, or any matter which the Attorney General deems pertinent thereto.”

A federal lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump seeking to halt the investigation notes that his son Eric already was deposed by Ms. James’s office in 2020, and that the former President has “produced over 8 million pages of documents in response to [Ms. James’s] subpoenas” since 2019.

The lawsuit notes that Ms. James’s 2018 campaign to be New York’s top legal officer was dominated by political attacks on Mr. Trump. She said she’d investigate “anyone in [Trump’s] orbit,” and declared the President “illegitimate.” Even Daniel Goldman, a Democratic ex-prosecutor who would go on to serve on the House 2019 impeachment investigation targeting Mr. Trump, said Ms. James’s campaign could “give the appearance of an individualized political vendetta,” the lawsuit says.

In June the Manhattan District Attorney indicted the Trump Organization and its former chief financial officer for allegedly concealing executive compensation. They’ve pleaded not guilty, and the charges might have been handled by a fine if not for Mr. Trump’s low political standing in New York.

Ms. James’s parallel investigation has yet to produce civil fraud charges. Attorneys General of both parties are increasingly entangled in national partisan politics, but it would take significant findings of fraud by her office to justify the damage to the legal system inflicted by an apparently political probe against an opposition party leader. Unless Ms. James has the goods and can prove them unambiguously, her investigation looks like more evidence of the decline of America’s rule of law.

Austin, Blinken to Testify Before Private Senate Panel About Afghanistan Pullout Disaster

Two top Biden administration officials are set to testify in private before a Senate panel next week as lawmakers seek additional answers about the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan last summer.

The Senate’s Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees have posted an event scheduled for 10 am on January 11 at which Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken will testify. The hearing is closed and will not be webcast, and no further details have been released about the event.

The two men, along with several other leading members of the administration and Pentagon, have already testified before the two Senate committees once, in the weeks after the US completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, 2021. Austin was excoriated for a no-show at a September 14 panel that Blinken also testified at, but appeared two weeks later at yet another hearing with the top diplomat.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) indicated at the time that he was willing to compel Austin to testify about the “fatally flawed” withdrawal, saying that “a full accounting of the US response to this crisis is not complete without the Pentagon - especially when it comes to understanding the complete collapse of the U.S. trained and funded Afghan military.”

“The fact that the Afghan army we and our partners trained simply melted away, in many cases without firing a shot, took us all by surprise,” Austin told the Senate Armed Services Committee on September 28. “It would be dishonest to claim otherwise.”

“We need to consider some uncomfortable truths: that we did not fully comprehend the depth of corruption and poor leadership in their senior ranks, we didn’t grasp the damaging effect of frequent and unexplained rotations by [Afghan] President Ghani of his commanders, we did not anticipate the snowball effect caused by the deals that the Taliban* commanders struck with local leaders,” Austin also said.

However, Austin recently tested positive for COVID-19, and the 68-year-old former Army general has been experiencing “mild symptoms.” His quarantine period ends on Friday, according to new US Center for Disease Control and Prevention rules, although he has been participating in virtual meetings while working from home, as well.

Engagement with news content plummeted last year compared to 2020, and given the ongoing decline in interest in news about COVID-19 and politics, it doesn't look like 2022 will be much better.

Why it matters: The Trump era and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic created a one-of-a-kind media moment that will be hard for news companies to replicate.

With fewer singular storylines capturing America's collective attention, news consumption was more scattered and diverted to sports.

Data shows that the Omicron variant is not jumpstarting Americans' engagement in COVID news like it did at the onset of the pandemic.

By the numbers: Primetime news viewership was down 36% across the three major cable networks, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, with the steepest decline during that time frame happening at CNN, per Nielsen ratings.

Broadcast viewership was also down for broadcast networks' evening news shows, but the declines weren't as drastic, the Associated Press notes.

App downloads for the top 12 mainstream publishers dropped 33%, according to data from Apptopia. Downloads to news apps fell most dramatically during the second half of the year.

Engagement on social media with news articles nosedived, according to data from NewsWhip. Interactions (likes, comments, shares) dropped 65% between 2020 and 2021, despite more articles published.

Website visits for the top-performing news websites in the U.S. tracked by Similarweb in the first 11 months of 2021 dropped 8%.

Yes, but: As Axios has previously noted, traffic to hyper-partisan and political publishers took a severe hit in 2021, while mainstream news publishers did better.

Be smart: The full-year drop in news engagement would have been even more dramatic were it not for the enormous amount of news traffic driven by the Capitol siege in January.

The Capitol riots drove a massive global traffic spike in January 2021, according to Bonnie Ray, the head of data science at traffic analytics company Chartbeat.

Overall, Chartbeat found that amongst 4000+ publishers globally, traffic declined 8% between 2020 and 2021, but when comparing overall traffic for December 2021 to January 2021, it's down nearly 20%.

What to watch: A few landmark events — like the Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2022 midterm elections — could provide some much-needed traffic boosts for publishers looking to hold on to fleeting subscribers.

But even those big events, in addition to tentpoles like Hollywood award shows, the Super Bowl and other sports championships, look poised to sustain TV viewership declines as Americans migrate to streaming.

Trans Activists Refuse To Publish Unfavorable Data On Trans Youth In Sports Debate

A trio of left-wing organizations refused to publish their full data set on Americans’ opinions on trans youth in sports after admitting that women’s sports advocates “win the debate on trans youth in sports against any and all arguments we have tried,” according to a messaging guide from the organizations.

ASO Communications, a self-defined “progressive” communications firm, published a messaging guide in coordination with the Transgender Law Center and a Democratic research firm, Lake Research Partners. Activists are told to build on the existing “Race Class Narrative” — which dubs anything other than social justice activism as racist — to persuade American voters to favorably view biological men competing in women’s sports.

“This new approach builds on the Race Class Narrative to demand to tell a convincing story of how our opposition uses strategic racism and transphobia to harm us all,” the guide reads.

The guidebook is not available on the Lake Research Partners or Transgender Law Center’s website, though it was archived at a small blog and available on the ASO Communications website.

One portion of the messaging manual admits that transgender activists are losing the debate on trans youth in sports, even among their base, though the trio of organizations has refused to publish the full unfavorable data set.

“Our base and persuadables want to support transgender student athletes, but are extremely susceptible to our opposition’s argument that excluding trans youth is necessary to protect the fairness of women’s sports,” the guide reads.

The Transgender Law Center, ASO Communications, and Lake Research Partners did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.

Of the data that was published, the trio’s research found that the “most effective message” at swaying voters towards supporting trans student-athletes is comparing their struggles to the struggles of black women being asked to wear their hair differently.

As nuclear deal negotiations advance, Biden won't account for every dollar Iran receives as a result of lifted sanctions

Congressional foreign policy leaders slammed the Biden administration's decision to not comply with a legal mandate to detail to Congress how sanctions relief for Iran will bolster the regime's ability to conduct terror attacks.

Republicans in Congress, in comments to the Washington Free Beacon, accused President Joe Biden of obstructing the legislative branch's constitutional oversight role. They say the Biden administration does not want Congress to know how much money sanctions relief provides to Iran's terrorist allies as negotiations with Tehran over a revamped nuclear deal drag into another year.

"President Biden thinks the rules don't apply to him. He thinks he can ignore a statute that mandates he tell Congress how much money he's sending to terrorists," Rep. Jim Banks (R., Ind.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee who helped spearhead the reporting mandates, told the Free Beacon. "Well, he better be ready in 2023. House conservatives will hold him accountable to the law."

Biden, in a statement issued during the Christmas holiday, said he would not fully obey a reporting provision included in the bipartisan spending bill that mandates the administration account for every dollar Iran receives as a result of lifted sanctions. The administration said providing that information would "include highly sensitive classified information, including information that could reveal critical intelligence sources or military operational plans."

The strenuous reporting requirement, written into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), is one of the first of its kind and would have forced the administration to provide an unprecedented look into how the easing of sanctions enriches Tehran's terrorist allies, such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The noncompliance announcement comes as the Biden administration attempts to reenter a nuclear deal with Iran—using sanctions relief as a bargaining chip. The Biden administration waiver also applies to other NDAA provisions requiring a full accounting of the equipment and classified materials abandoned in Afghanistan when the United States left the country last year, as well as a detailed report on joint U.S.-Taliban intelligence-sharing operations.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R., Texas), the primary author of the Iran reporting statute, told the Free Beacon that he and his colleagues will not allow the administration to obstruct congressional efforts to mandate transparency.

"Nobody is above the law, and Joe Biden must follow the NDAA that he just signed into law," Jackson said, adding that Biden is "refusing to comply with the law that he himself signed."

At Least 70 Free-floating Planets Found in the Milky Way

ROGUE PLANETS don’t play by the rules. These free floaters roam the universe on their own without being bound to a host star.

Astronomers know very little about these rebellious worlds, but a recent discovery may help them learn more about free-floating planets. Using data from several telescopes worldwide, a team of astronomers discovered at least 70 rogue planets in the Milky Way, marking the largest group of rogue planets ever found.

A group of researchers detailed its discovery in a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

HERE’S THE BACKGROUND — When scouring the cosmos for exoplanets, astronomers wait for a dip in a star’s light that reflects when a planet is transiting around the star.

NASA launched its Kepler space telescope in 2009 to find Earth-like planets orbiting different stars. But in 2012, the telescope spotted a free-floating planetary-mass object around 100 light years away from Earth.

Planet CFBDSIR2149 was the first rogue planet discovery, and its proximity helped astronomers learn more about these planetary anomalies.

Rogue planets, also known as free-floating, nomad, or orphan planets, wander the cosmos without orbiting a star. In October 2020, astronomers discovered an Earth-sized rogue world in the galaxy, and some scientists believe these planets could even be capable of hosting life, despite all odds.

There may be plenty of rogue planets in the Milky Way, but those nomadic planets are hard to find since they emit virtually no light and don’t transit in front of a star from our view on Earth.

Instead, astronomers usually discover rogue planets through microlensing. This method uses an object in the background as a magnifying lens when a foreground object moves in front of it, bending the light in a way that can reveal a planet’s mass.

WHAT’S NEW — The team behind the recent discovery used data spanning 20 years from several ground-based and space telescopes, including the European Space Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite, combined with tens of thousands of wide-field images.

They observed the motion and luminosity of millions of sources that appeared in the data.

The researchers found at least 70 rogue planets and up to 170 candidate planets. The team found these free-floaters in a star-forming region near the Sun, located within the Scorpius and Ophiuchus constellations.

“We did not know how many to expect and are excited to have found so many,” Núria Miret-Roig, an astronomer at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Bordeaux, France and the University of Vienna, Austria, and lead author of the new study, said in a statement.

The recent discovery suggests there could be a lot more of these planets roaming the galaxy. However, scientists are still not sure of their origin.

Rogue planets could have formed the same way stars do — from a cloud of gas and dust — and just exist on their own, or they could have once been a part of a star system before getting ejected.

Without a star to orbit, these planets go about their business independently, orbiting around the center of a galaxy much as stars do.

WHAT’S NEXT — The team hopes that by studying the large group of rogue planets, they will be able to identify their origins and how they formed and evolved.

They have their hopes set on ESO’s upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which is currently under construction in the Chilean Atacama Desert and is due to start observations later this decade.

“These objects are extremely faint and little can be done to study them with current facilities,” Hervé Bouy, an astronomer at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Bordeaux, France, and project leader of the new research, said in a statement. “The ELT will be absolutely crucial to gathering more information about most of the rogue planets we have found.”

NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is set to launch in 2027, will also be equipped with the proper tools to search for these free-floaters.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) shocked many conservatives on Wednesday when he echoed the left’s overwrought January 6 messaging during a Senate Rules Committee hearing, referring to the riot as a “violent terrorist attack on the Capitol,” and offering full-throated support for the Capitol Police, some of whose actions led to the deaths of multiple unarmed Trump supporters. Cruz thanked the police for “defending” the U.S. Capitol and said those who assaulted law enforcement officers should be prosecuted.

“We are approaching a solemn anniversary this week,” Cruz said. “And it is an anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol where we saw the men and women law enforcement demonstrate incredible courage, incredible bravery, risk their lives to defend the men and women who serve in this Capitol.”

“My view is that anyone who commits an act of violence should be prosecuted,” Cruz said during Senate testimony from Capitol Police chief Wednesday. “And anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer should go to jail for a very long time. And I think that’s a principle that is true regardless of the politics of the violent criminal, whether they are right-wing, left-wing or they got no wings at all.”

Cruz asked Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger what could have been done differently to prevent the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“As we reflect on what happened a year ago, it is also worth asking as we have as this committee has as this Congress has, I know you have—what could have been done differently? What could have prevented the breach of the Capitol, what could have prevented the riot getting as far as it did?”

Manger blamed the breach on “clearly documented intelligence failures” and “leadership failures with the Capitol Police Department.”

Multiple Trump supporters appear to have died as a direct result of police brutality on January 6. Ashli Babbitt (35) was shot to death by Michael Byrd, a lieutenant with Capitol police, at near point-blank range just outside the Speaker’s Lobby at 2:43 p.m. on January 6.

Although her autopsy report indicated that Rosanne Boyland (34) died of a drug overdose, evidence suggests she was a victim of law enforcement’s brutal assault on Trump supporters trapped inside the lower west terrace tunnel at the Capitol building. Kevin Greeson (55) died of a heart attack after being repeatedly flash bombed and sprayed with chemical agents. A fourth Trump supporter, Benjamin Phillips (50) also died of a heart attack.

According to American Greatness reporter Julie Kelly, the Trump supporters didn’t start fighting back until the they were attacked.

Police began attacking crowds of protesters peacefully assembled outside the Capitol building around 1:15 p.m. on January 6, shortly after President Trump finished his speech at the Ellipse. Capitol Police deployed tear gas and pepper balls into the crowd while D.C. Metro police threw flashbangs and sting balls filled with rubber bullets, which prompted many of the initial confrontations between police and protesters.

“The minute you call it a ‘violent terrorist attack on the capitol,’ you lose most of your standing when complaining about the DOJ, Dems and Media because they have diff views than you how to handle a “violent terrorist attack on the capitol,” wrote political commentator Yossi Gestetner on Twitter.

“Cruz accepts the narrative that lawmakers were about to be lynched despite the fact that many hundreds calmly walked in the Capitol taking selfies and not moving rope lines. It was mostly calm where PD was not at hand,” Gestetner added in a subsequent tweet.

​Former President Donald Trump holds a commanding lead over other potential Republican candidates in the 2024 presidential election, leading Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis by 43 percentage points, a new poll shows.

Asked who they would support in the 2024 election, 54 percent of ​Republicans picked Trump, while 11 percent chose DeSantis and 8 percent picked former Vice President Mike Pence, a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted last month and released Friday found.

Trump has not officially announced another run for the White House, but he has said he’s “thinking about it.”

“I think a lot of people will be very happy, frankly, with the decision, and probably will announce that after the midterms,” he said in an interview in November.

Nikki Haley, the UN ambassador in the Trump administration, came in fourth with 4 percent of support, followed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) at 3 percent, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott getting 2 percent.

​Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) each finished with 1 percent.

President Biden hasn’t said whether he will run for re-election in 2024 – a rematch of the 2020 contest.

While both have ​high familiarity ratings, Biden has a slight edge over Trump – 99 percent to 98 percent.

The other potential GOP candidates lag behind Trump in the familiarity ratings – with Cruz at 92 percent, Christie at 82 percent, and DeSantis at 76 percent.

Among potential Democratic presidential candidates, Vice President Kamala Harris has a 96 percent familiar rating and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has a 76 percent rating.

Biden’s favorability rating of 52 percent is slightly above Trump’s 44 percent.

Fifty-six percent say they have an unfavorable view of the former president, while 48 percent say that about Biden.

The poll surveyed 4,407 adults between Dec. 13 – 17.

Evidence of systematic ballot harvesting in Georgia’s 2020 general election and the U.S. Senate runoff is now being officially investigated, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger. Raffensberger announced his plans to issue subpoenas on John Solomon’s Just the News broadcast on Jan. 4.

Raffensberger mentioned he had already hired the MITRE Corporation to investigate evidence of ballot harvesting in the state and “found no anomalies.” However, Raffensberger said his office has since received “credible allegations” of systematic ballot harvesting and is now conducting “an ongoing investigation.”

Raffensberger is referring to evidence provided by True the Vote, which reportedly collected “over a petabyte of data” from their ballot-tracking initiative that found evidence of massive and systematic ballot harvesting in Georgia, as previously reported by UncoverDC. The organization collected geospatial and temporal data using cellphone pings and the geofencing of dropbox locations. They collected data in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Raffensberger ensured that ballot harvesting was outlawed when he “took over in 2019.” And in preparation for the 2020 election, the state election board put strict emergency rules to secure absentee ballot drop boxes. The regulations required secure, publicly available government locations, video surveillance, hours of operation, tamper-proof boxes, and collection of ballots from each drop box location at least “once every 24 hours.” Georgia law requires counties to preserve the video footage collected at the drop boxes. The regulation states:

“Video recordings of the dropbox locations must be retained by the county registrars for 30 days after the final certification of the election, or until the conclusion of any contest involving an election on the ballot in the county jurisdiction, whichever is later, and shall be made available to Secretary of State investigators upon request.”

Raffensberger stated that some counties indicated that they “didn’t preserve all their video footage.”:

“There has to be accountability. We work with the counties. They know the rules. We aren’t trying to do it with harshness, but we also want to make sure that they understand that we are going to come back and we are checking. We want to make sure the administrative code is being followed but also voter confidence because we’ve been fighting this issue of voter confidence going back to Stacey Abrams [who] talked about voter suppression, saying she lost by 55,000 votes.”

John Fredericks appeared on Bannon’s War Room broadcast on Wednesday morning. He provided additional information regarding Georgia’s alleged ballot harvesting scheme. Fredericks said that allegedly “240 people have been identified” as having participated in the scheme. He also stated that “what turned this [investigation] around [was the fact] that a whistleblower came forward,” allegedly at the behest of his mother. The whistleblower allegedly reported that:

Fulton County, Pennsylvania has every right to investigate its voting machines. The voting machine company, Dominion, is fighting against this investigation.

We reported yesterday that Dominion was fighting against the inspection of their voting machines in Fulton County, Pennsylvania.

Dominion claims that the investigators looking into their voting machines for Fulton County will damage or destroy their machines when they make forensic copies of their computers. This is simply not true. But it is true that it is harmful to your case to lie to a judge.

Dominion’s remedy for their complaint is to suggest that the only companies to investigate their machines should be related to EAC-approved or cyber-approved companies as listed in their complaint.

The problem that Dominion has is not that their machines will be mishandled or damaged as a result of thorough inspections by independent professionals. Rather. Dominion must be concerned that the court and the County will find out that their machines should not have been certified for use.

The reason this may be the case is because the machines may not have gone through the proper ‘hardening’ process. According to the enterprise networking planet:

System hardening is the process that secures computing systems by reducing the attack surface to make them hack-proof. It consists of a set of tools and methodologies that removes the non-essential services, thus minimizing the security risks to your system as much as possible.

When Dominion machines are shipped to the various locations where they are used they need to go through the ‘system hardening’ process. Any superfluous games, emails, etc. need to be removed from the machines. The guidelines for hardening should be followed and procedures should take place to set up the machines properly.

The client and the machine company should have a checklist that users would go through to address password controls, etc. and the hardening checklist should be signed off on and verified. After the hardening process is complete and the machines are signed off on they should then be put in use, but not before.

It appears clear that the Dominion machines have not been hardened. If they were, they would not have software like SQL server on them. We found this in multiple locations in 2021.

(Reuters) – Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the storming of the U.S. Capitol, Twitter Inc convened a team to prepare the social networking site to address any harmful content associated with the event, the company told Reuters on Tuesday.

Social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook were accused of enabling extremists to organize the siege on Jan. 6, 2021, when supporters of Republican then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to block Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.

Twitter said it “convened a cross-functional working group” comprised of members across its site integrity and trust and safety teams, which is specific to the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol and will watch for risks such as tweets and accounts that incite violence. The company did not say how many people were on the monitoring team.

The company said the effort expands upon its work to monitor the platform around major global events, and added it will continue to monitor trending topics and search results for harmful content.

A spokesperson for Meta Platforms Inc, the company previously known as Facebook, said in a statement on Wednesday: “We’re continuing to actively monitor threats on our platform and will respond accordingly.”

A spokesperson for YouTube, which is owned by Google, said on Wednesday the online video platform had removed tens of thousands of videos for violating its U.S. elections-related policies over the past year, and said it continued to closely monitor for election misinformation on the site.

In March, the chief executives of Twitter, Google and Facebook, testified in a hearing before Congress and were asked by U.S. lawmakers whether their platforms bore some responsibility for the riot.

Then-Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey was the only executive who answered “yes,” but said the “broader ecosystem” had to be taken into account.

Days after the Capitol riot, Twitter announced a permanent suspension of Trump’s account, citing “the risk of further incitement of violence.”

“Our approach both before and after January 6 has been to take strong enforcement action against accounts and Tweets that incite violence or have the potential to lead to offline harm,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.

The company added that over the past year, it has permanently suspended thousands of accounts for violating its policies against coordinated harmful activity.

FBI To Host First Annual Jan 6 Reunion

With nearly 3,000 words of interviews and assorted content, he explores how much money — nearly $25 billion it turns out — was donated by progressive elites to divisive racial endeavors after the May 2020 killing of George Floyd.

Before Floyd’s death, Candid — a website for wealthy “people who want to change the world with the resources they need to do it” — said philanthropic entities provided about $3 billion in “racial equity funding” from 2011-19. Since then, Candid found, “50,887 grants valued at $12.7 billion” and “177 pledges valued at $11.6 billion.”

Among the top funders are the Ford Foundation, at $3 billion; Mackenzie Scott, at $2.9 billion; JPMorgan Chase & Co. Contributions Program, at $2.1 billion; W.K. Kellogg Foundation, $1.2 billion; Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, $1.1 billion; Silicon Valley Community Foundation, $1 billion; Walton Family Foundation, $689 million; The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, $438 million; and the Foundation to Promote Open Society, $350.5 million.

This is the largest amount of philanthropy ever spent on one cause in such a short period — probably by a factor of 10.

This institutional caving-in to bogus theories of racial inequity and victimhood is mind-blowing and also poses a great danger to Democrats because these causes are so far left of where even their voters are, much less where everyday Americans are.

Some liberal strategists worry about unintended political consequences from this surge in virtue signaling.

Matt Bennett, senior vice president of Third Way, a center-left think tank, told Edsall:

“Whether inadvertent or not, some progressive foundations are funding work that is shortsighted and harmful to the long-term progress they hope to achieve. It’s crystal clear that some ideas being pushed by activists and funded by lefty foundations go beyond that paradigm, treading into territory that is flat-out politically toxic and that undermine our collective goals.”

And it’s all failing, too.

“Defund the Police” was voted down in Minneapolis two months ago and performed worst in areas with the largest black populations — where a whopping 61% opposed. Wealthier, liberal strongholds supported the preposterous amendment to disband the city’s police department by a 57-43 margin.

Edsall later quotes New Republic editor Michael Tomasky, who recently wrote, “It’s an undeniable fact that Democratic Party elites, progressive activists, foundation and think-tank officials, and most opinion journalists are well to the left of the party’s rank and file.”

Correct, and white guilt elites still refuse to understand that the most moderate Democrat voters are disproportionately Latino and black.

“For leaders of the Democratic Party, these developments pose a particularly frustrating problem because they pay an electoral price for policy proposals and rhetoric that are outside party control,” Edsall aptly concluded.

As they salivate over tomorrow’s Jan. 6 anniversary, the left conveniently forgets that Jan. 20, 2017, was a very violent and dangerous day with hundreds charged.

Many Democrat politicians also refused to accept the result of the 2016 presidential election. A number of left-wing congressmen objected to the tally of Electoral College votes, including Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, who led the second Trump impeachment trial.

To his credit, then-vice president Biden wasn’t tolerating shenanigans and conspiracies, nor was then-vice president Mike Pence in 2021.

However, five years ago wasn’t the first time in recent memory when Democrats tried to obstruct the certification of a Republican presidential victory.

In 2005, Kamala Harris’s U.S. Senate predecessor, Barbara Boxer, objected to Pres. George W. Bush’s electoral win in Ohio, forcing lawmakers to waste time debating whether to reject the Buckeye State’s electoral votes.

Yet following the objections to certifying the 2020 result, the Washington Post reports that some Democrats refused even to speak with Republican colleagues. They also engaged in other infantile measures to demonstrate their displeasure like voting against any legislation whose main sponsor was a Republican opposed to certifying Biden’s election last year.

Delaware Sen. Chris Coons reportedly went more than six months without saying a single word to Senate Republicans who voted against signing off on Biden’s win. Another phony, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, claims she thinks about Jan. 6 “every time I see or work with” someone who didn’t sign off.

Is it a big deal?

So the parties have hostility and irreconcilable differences about where America should go from here. Given this large ideological and cultural divide, should we expect members of one party to get along with members of the other? Probably not.

My only disagreement, however, is Democrats’ preposterous claim that somehow their party now favors “democracy” and Republicans are its enemy. That’s mythical and vacuous. The two parties differ fundamentally. That’s all. Don’t expect their conceptions of “democracy” to be compatible.

GETTR Shadow Bans Reporter Who Queried Ban of America First Streamer, Has 'Nothing More to Say'

Elijah Schaffer, the Blaze reporter who queried the GETTR ban of America First streamer Nick Fuentes has been shadowbanned on the platform.

As National File previously reported, Nick Fuentes, the host of popular nightly show America First, was permanently banned from GETTR last month for seemingly no reason:

Fuentes attempted to rejoin the platform multiple times on Tuesday evening, but was banned shortly after each time, even as viewers watched on his live stream.

“If I go on there, and they ban me for being me, well what is that? It’s arbitrary, it’s discretionary, and when they ban groyper, that takes it to a different level,” Fuentes said on his stream, referring to previous reports from the Daily Beast and others that GETTR had banned the term “groyper” from their platform, a name used to describe supporters of Fuentes.

Schaffer, a reporter for The Blaze, was one of the first in the media to question Fuentes’s ban from GETTR, and received confirmation from the Alt Tech site that Fuentes had allegedly broken their terms of service, but they did not respond to his inquiry as to what rules Fuentes specifically broke, or what posts.

“My inquiry was extremely professional and predicated on the basis that the public deserves the right to know GETTR’s threshold for banning users, largely in part due to their users joining to avoid the very censorship practices they seem to be implementing,” Schaffer added, saying that the obtuse nature of Fuentes’s banning made him “suspicious” of the platform.

Eventually, Schaffer received a response from a GETTR spokesperson, who said that they had “nothing more to say” on Fuentes’s ban, other than highlighting that GETTR founder Jason Miller “has been on record many times talking about how [GETTR does] not tolerate hate speech, racism, discrimination, or recruiting for white nationalism [sic] causes” on the site.

Schaffer also included a screenshot of a search on GETTR for his name, which returned no results, despite the fact that he has an account on the platform.

National File was able to confirm through various tests that Schaffer is indeed a banned search on GETTR, something not even rolled out for Fuentes, who can still be looked up on GETTR, despite being permanently banned.

National File also confirmed that despite Shaffer’s apparent GETTR shadow ban, his on-screen “You Are Here” co-host Sydney Watson is searchable on the platform.

Police shoot, kill burglary suspect in Seattle, officer also injured

SEATTLE - Seattle Police say an officer responding to a burglary call in the 2200 block of S Eddy St shot a suspect who was believed to be armed with a knife or machete.

Police say officers were on their way to the scene when they saw the suspect. Police attempted to chase the suspect when he reportedly turned around and stabbed to death a police dog. The police dog's trainer was stabbed in the face.

According to Seattle Police, a second officer then shot and killed the suspect

Of all the questions asked, words spoken, and ink spilled on the so-called “Capitol Siege” of January 6, 2021, none hold the key to the entire event quite like what Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked of Christopher Wray.

The Democrat from Minnesota asked the Trump-appointed FBI Director: Did the federal government infiltrate any of the so-called “militia” organizations claimed to be responsible for planning and executing the Capitol Siege?

Christopher Wray is able to uncomfortably weasel his way out of answering the question directly, partially because Klobuchar does him the courtesy of not asking him the question directly. Klobuchar instead asks the FBI director if he wishes he had infiltrated the militia organizations allegedly involved in 1/6 — assuming from the outset that there was in fact no infiltration, thereby providing the FBI director an easy way to avoid addressing the question one way or another.

Revolver News is willing to address the matter directly in the following three questions:

In the year leading up to 1/6 and during 1/6 itself, to what extent were the three primary militia groups (the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, and the Three Percenters) that the FBI, DOJ, Pentagon and network news have labeled most responsible for planning and executing a Capitol attack on 1/6 infiltrated by agencies of the federal government, or informants of said agencies?

Exactly how many federal undercover agents or confidential informants were present at the Capitol or in the Capitol during the infamous “siege” and what roles did they play (merely passive informants or active instigators)?

Finally, of all of the unindicted co-conspirators referenced in the charging documents of those indicted for crimes on 1/6, how many worked as a confidential informant or as an undercover operative for the federal government (FBI, Army Counterintelligence, etc.)?

From now on, all discussion of 1/6 must give way to a laser-like focus on the questions above, with an unwavering persistence at obtaining the answers.

If the narrative about 1/6 does not conform to the questions above, the American people will never learn the most important truth about what 1/6 is, and what kind of country they’re really living in.

If it turns out the federal government did in fact have undercover agents or confidential informants embedded within the so-called militia groups indicted for conspiring to obstruct the Senate certification on 1/6, the implications would be nothing short of seismic. Especially if such agents or informants enjoyed extremely senior-level positions within such groups.

One of the key consensus points among the FBI-DOJ and the regime media is the idea that, while 1/6 is primarily the fault of Trump-supporting QAnon-infused “domestic terrorists,” it is secondarily the fault of so-called “intelligence failures.”

Klobuchar’s own question at the March 2, 2021 FBI hearing (above) reinforces this “intelligence failure” narrative, but she is not alone. A five-month “bipartisan” Senate investigation recently arrived at the very same “intelligence failure” narrative to explain the breach of the Capitol and associated events on 1/6:

A bipartisan Senate investigation of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection found security and intelligence failures at every level of government that led to the breach of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob as lawmakers in a joint session were certifying the 2020 election.

The 95-page report, a product of a roughly five-month, joint probe by the Senate Homeland Security and Rules Committees, found significant breakdowns ranging “from federal intelligence agencies failing to warn of a potential for violence to a lack of planning and preparation by (U.S. Capitol Police) and law enforcement leadership.” There was no overall operational or staffing plan for that fateful day, a total failure of leadership, according to the committees. The commandant’s office called on Almaty residents "to remain calm and render assistance to the law-enforcement agencies in establishing the Constitutional order and public security"

The law-enforcement personnel have launched a special counter-terror operation in Almaty where looting continues, the Almaty commandant’s office reported on Wednesday.

"A special counter-terror operation has been launched in the city to establish order," the statement says.

The commandant’s office also called on Almaty residents "to remain calm and render assistance to the law-enforcement agencies in establishing the Constitutional order and public security."

As the statement says, "radically-minded supporters of riots have caused huge damage to the city, put up resistance to the legitimate actions of law-enforcement agencies for establishing order and providing security."

The commandant’s office also reported that "the extremists are on a looting spree, causing damage to business." Moreover, "they are endangering the lives and health of civilians, obstructing the work of medical workers and causing damage to polyclinics and hospitals."

"Bandits who are on the rampage in Almaty are highly organized, which is evidence that they were seriously trained abroad" and "their attack on Kazakhstan is an act of aggression and an attempt to disrupt the state’s integrity," the statement says.

Protests have been raging in Kazakhstan for the fourth day in a row. On January 2, crowds took to the streets in the cities of Zhanaozen and Aktau in the Mangistau region in the country’s southwest, protesting against fuel price hikes. Two days later, riots erupted in Almaty (in the country’s southeast) where police used stun grenades to disperse crowds and also in other cities, in particular, in Atyrau and Aktobe (in the west), Uralsk (in the northwest), Taraz, Shymkent and Kyzylorda (in the south), Karaganda (in the northeast) and even in the capital of Nur-Sultan.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev earlier declared a state of emergency in the Mangistau and Almaty regions and also in Almaty and Nur-Sultan for two weeks. After that, a state of emergency was declared on the entire territory of Kazakhstan. On January 5, the head of the Kazakh state dismissed the government. Its members continue discharging their duties until a new Cabinet is approved.

White House says ‘crazy Russian claims’ of US instigating civil unrest in Central Asia are ‘absolutely false’

President Joe Biden’s spokeswoman has denied that the US government is behind the violent protests that have rocked Kazakhstan this week, claiming that unnamed “Russians” have falsely accused Washington of triggering the tumult.

The White House is monitoring the protests in Kazakhstan and supports “calls for calm, for protesters to express themselves peacefully and for authorities to exercise restraint,” Jen Psaki told reporters on Wednesday.

There are some crazy Russian claims about the US being behind this, so let me just use this opportunity to convey that is absolutely false and clearly a part of the standard Russian disinformation playbook.

Psaki didn’t specify who in Russia has alleged a American role in the Kazakhstan unrest. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said that it’s closely monitoring the protests and has called for a peaceful solution. The Kremlin has warned against foreign interference in the conflict and said Kazakhstan can handle its own problems. Neither of the statements mentioned the US.

Progressive lawmakers are pushing to pack the U.S. Supreme Court by adding four more justices to the bench.

The membership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus has voted in favor of backing the Judiciary Act of 2021, which would raise the number of justices from nine to 13.

"After thoughtful consideration, the Progressive Caucus membership has determined that the urgent work to restore American democracy must include expanding the Supreme Court,” Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said in a statement.

"The current bench was filled by a partisan, right-wing effort to entrench a radical, anti-democratic faction and erode human rights that have been won over decades. In recent years, this court has gutted the Voting Rights Act and public sector unions, entrenched unconstitutional abortion bans, and failed to overturn the blatantly discriminatory Muslim Ban. As a co-equal governing body, Congress cannot sit by while this attack on the constitution continues unchecked. I am proud that our Caucus is joining the fight to expand the court and restore balance to the bench," she said.

The quantity of seats on the court has been fixed at nine for more than 150 years.

"The number of Justices on the Supreme Court changed six times before settling at the present total of nine in 1869," according to the Supreme Court's website.

A Morning Consult/Politico poll of registered voters conducted in April 2021 found that the idea of expanding the number of seats on the high court was not very popular. When selecting which came closest to their view, just 26% indicated that they thought Congress should approve a law permitting more than nine justices to serve on the high court, while 46% indicated that the nation's legislature should only allow nine members on the high court.

Former Space Company Executive Alleges Serial Lawbreaking By Democratic Governor

A former aerospace company executive accused embattled Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday, as well as several of her appointees, of retaliating against him after he filed a whistleblower complaint.

Zach DeGregorio, the former Chief Financial Officer of Spaceport America, alleges that one of Grisham’s political appointees, Alicia Keyes, encouraged him to falsify an economic impact study. He also alleges that Keyes mishandled a bond refinancing for the purpose of defrauding the state. When DeGregorio attempted to report the wrongdoing, he claimed, he was threatened with investigations and a firing.

DeGregorio resigned from his position at the company in June 2020, shortly after he filed a complaint alleging that Spaceport America Executive Director Daniel Hicks violated several state laws, which led to “possible waste and abuse of taxpayer funds.” In the lawsuit, DeGregorio adds that Hicks attempted to break into his email account and accessed emails DeGregorio sent to Keyes about Hicks’ involvement in alleged procurement fraud.

After tracking software was placed on DeGregorio’s tech devices, he claims, he resigned.

A spokeswoman for Spaceport America declined the Daily Caller’s request for comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

The lawsuit also alleges that Spaceport America’s chief client, Virgin Galactic, and its CEO, Richard Branson, bribed Lujan Grisham in exchange for “essential business” status during COVID-19 shutdowns. The governor’s office met with Virgin Galactic shortly before Grisham “ma[d]e changes to the NM Spaceport Authority board,” “ma[d]e staffing changes at the NM Spaceport Authority,” and “made operational changes at the NM Spaceport Authority that benefited Virgin Galactic at the expense of other customers and the NM taxpayers,” according to the lawsuit.

Lujan Grisham’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment from the Daily Caller.

The governor later appeared at a launch party for Virgin Galactic’s spaceship, VSS Unity. Branson became the first billionaire to launch into space in July 2021, beating SpaceX’s Elon Musk and Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos.

DeGregorio is requesting $200 million in relief, citing a loss of future earning capacity, emotional distress and back pay.

Disney+ actress Kim Mi-soo has died at the age of 29, her agency confirms.

Mi-soo had recently appeared in the Disney+ series "Snowdrop" in a supporting role.

"Kim suddenly left us on Jan. 5," her agency Landscape said in a statement on Wednesday, according to Variety. "The bereaved are deep in their sorrow at the sudden sadness. Please refrain from reporting false rumors or speculation so that the family can mourn in peace."

The outlet reported the statement was translated by Joongang Daily. A cause of death has not been revealed.

"Snowdrop" was originally produced by JTBC Studios and Drama House, but it appears as a Disney+ original everywhere but Korea. The series premiered on the streaming service on Dec. 18.

The series takes place in South Korea in 2987 and follows the pro-Democratic movement. South Koreans criticized the series for glamorizing and distorting historical facts, outlets reported at the time.

JTBC Stuidos released a statement claiming the concerns over historical distortion were just a misunderstanding.

"Most of the misunderstandings regarding concerns of historical distortion and disparaging the democratization movement, criticized by many people, will be settled through the progress of the drama’s plot," the statement said (via Forbes).

"The drama includes the production team’s intent of hoping for no repetition of an abnormal era in which individual freedom and happiness are oppressed by unjust power. Although we unfortunately cannot reveal much of the plot ahead of each episode, we ask that you watch over the future progress of the plot."

A petition to have the series canceled circulated in South Korea and gained hundreds of thousands of signatures, according to Variety. Brands sponsoring the Disney+ series also revoked their sponsorship at the time, the outlet reported.

Russian-led military troops will be deployed to help "stabilise" Kazakhstan amid anti-government demonstrations.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for support from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) as nationwide unrest escalates.

The protests were first sparked by rising fuel prices, but have broadened to include other political grievances.

President Tokayev claimed the unrest was the work of foreign-trained "terrorist gangs".

However, Kate Mallinson, an expert on Central Asia at the foreign affairs think tank Chatham House in London, said the protests are "symptomatic of very deep-seated and simmering anger and resentment at the failure of the Kazhak government to modernise their country and introduce reforms that impact people at all levels".

The president has imposed a nationwide state of emergency that includes an overnight curfew and a ban on mass gatherings and has vowed a tough response to the protests.

In a televised speech in the early hours of Thursday, he said he had sought help from the CSTO - a military alliance made up of Russia and five ex-Soviet states to help stabilise the country.

Later on Wednesday the CSTO's chairman, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, confirmed in a statement on Facebook that the alliance would send peacekeeping forces "for a limited period of time".

The US State Department said it is "closely following" the situation in Kazakhstan, with a spokesman urging restraint by authorities and protesters alike.

BACKGROUND: Kazakhstan country profile

CONTEXT: Rare protests in a country that bans dissent

President Tokayev is only the second person to lead Kazakhstan since it declared independence in 1991. His election, in 2019, was condemned by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) as showing scant respect for democratic standards.

Much of the anger on the streets, however, seems to have been aimed at his predecessor, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has held a powerful national security role since stepping down. On Wednesday, he was fired in a bid to subdue the growing unrest.

Protesters had been heard chanting Mr Nazarbayev's name, while a video showing people attempting to pull down a giant bronze statue of the former leader has been shared online. According to BBC Monitoring, the now-dismantled monument appears to have stood in Taldykorgan, Mr Nazarbayev's home region.

Staff at Kazakhstan's main airport had to flee anti-government demonstrators, who have also targeted government buildings.

Protesters gathered at the mayor's office in Almaty before eventually storming it. Videos on social media showed a plume of smoke rising from the building, while gunfire could also be heard.

The city's police chief, Kanat Taimerdenov, said "extremists and radicals" had attacked 500 civilians and ransacked hundreds of businesses.

Water cannon were used against protesters in the western city of Aktobe. There are reports that security forces have sided with protesters in some places.

However, getting a clear picture of what is happening in the central Asian nation is proving difficult. The interior ministry released figures of reported casualties among the security forces, but there were no equivalent reports of any injuries or deaths among protesters amid what monitoring groups have described as a "nation-scale internet blackout".

Other attempts to end the protests, which began on Sunday when the government lifted the price cap on liquefied petroleum gas which many people use to power their cars, causing it to double in cost, have been made.

As well as Mr Nazarbayev's dismissal, the entire government has resigned.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev plans to announce the resignation of the country’s government amid massive protests. About this in his Telegram channel reports the portal Zakon.kz with reference to information from its own sources on Wednesday, January 5.

“The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, plans to announce the resignation of the government in the morning,” the message says.
