Argentina convicts vice-president of corruption

De Kirchner faces 6 years in prison and lifelong ban on holding public office

Argentina’s sitting Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was found guilty of corruption on Tuesday and sentenced to six years in prison, along with a lifelong ban on holding public office going forward. She will remain free until the end of her term, however, due to immunity.

The federal court in Buenos Aires rendered the verdict after three and a half years of proceedings involving more than 100 witnesses. Kirchner, 69, was accused of taking bribes and having an “illicit association” with a construction magnate during her 2007-2015 presidency. Prosecutors had sought a 12-year sentence.

Kirchner has been vice president and head of the Argentinian senate since December 2019, and can only be stripped of immunity with an unlikely two-thirds vote in the chamber. She also has the option to appeal the verdict to the supreme court.

Tuesday’s verdict is the first time a sitting vice president in Argentina was sentenced for wrongdoing while in office. Kirchner’s Vice President Amado Boudou, as well as Presidents Carlos Menem and Fernando de la Rua, had all been convicted after leaving their posts.

Kirchner had denied all charges and called the process politically charged and ridden with irregularities. Within minutes of the verdict, she said it went beyond “lawfare.”

Kirchner succeeded her late husband Neastor (2003-2007) as president, and was suspected of directing millions in public works funds to Lázaro Baez, a businessman who was a friend of the couple.

After Kirchner left office in 2015, she was also charged with setting a fraudulently low price for dollar-denominated futures, but later acquitted. Another indictment charged her with treason, but was later dropped, while a claim that she had made a secret pact with Iran to protect the alleged perpetrators of a 1994 terrorist bombing was thrown out by another federal court in October 2021.

President Alberto Fernandez backed Kirchner, calling the investigation into her “political” in nature. The next presidential election in Argentina is in 11 months, and it was widely believed Kirchner would run for the post again, though no official announcements have been made.

Kirchner is seen as the most influential figure inside Argentina’s ruling Justicialist Party, founded by Juan and Eva Peron in 1946. Her son Maximo leads the ruling majority bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Argentinian parliament.

Senators urge investigation into alleged trafficking of underage border crossers

Following whistleblower testimony, three Republican U.S. Senators sent a letter to the chairman of the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee calling on him to investigate claims that migrant children are being put in the hands of human traffickers.

Last week, the investigative journalism outlet Project Veritas spoke with Tara Lee Rodas of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity & Efficiency (CIGIE), an agency set up to address integrity, economic, and effectiveness issues within the federal government.

In 2021, Rodas volunteered to assist the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with the processing of unaccompanied minors caught trying to enter the U.S. and was deployed to an emergency intake center in Pomona, California.

“We’re looking at taxpayer-funded child trafficking,” Rodas told The National Desk (TND) in a separate, sit-down interview. “If I hadn’t seen it myself, I couldn’t believe it.”

Rodas told TND sex trafficking, labor trafficking and even organ harvesting are all points of concern for migrant children put in the custody of criminal actors.

Rodas said she can’t independently verify whether organ trafficking was indeed taking place through the U.S.’s sponsorship program for unaccompanied minors, but she concluded “we don’t know what’s happening to these children.”

U.S. Senators Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., Rick Scott, R-Fla. and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., penned a letter sent to Rep. Gary Peters, D-Mich., on Monday, calling on him to conduct a hearing looking into the allegations put forth by Rodas.

“The most reprehensible claim by Ms. Rodas occurred when she raised concerns to command center executives about placing another unaccompanied child in a questionable home,” the senators noted in their letter to the Homeland Security Committee chairman. “According to Ms. Rodas, someone told her, ‘I think you need to understand we only get sued if we keep kids in care too long. We don’t get sued by traffickers.’”

The senators said that after Ms. Rodas’s whistleblowing, the Senate Homeland Security Committee cannot let the Biden administration continue to “dodge scrutiny over its inhumane border crisis.”

According to Rodas, “all of the evidence exists” for HHS to look into these suspicious sponsors.

“HHS has all of the evidence of where all of the sponsors are, what they’re addresses are,” Rodas told TND.

Rodas added that data can help indicate where this trafficking might be taking place.

“[W]e sent many children to Houston, Texas – I believe it was more than 600 children to Houston alone – and we had a very high-level suspected trafficking case, where we sent many children to Gulf Freeway,” Rodas said. “And that’s where they went and looked, and we know for sure based on the data in the UAC portal, which is their database, that there are over 300 children in a few square miles and that’s where the one child said, ‘I’m getting pimped out by my aunt.’”

“When we have the child safely in our care, it is our responsibility to whom we give this child,” Rodas insisted.

Democrats Attempting to Pack Defense Bill with ‘Grab Bag’ of Unrelated Policies

Democrats are trying to load up a defense bill with unrelated items, jeopardizing the passage of legislation that has passed for more than 60 years on a bipartisan basis.

“The real inside story here is what Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are doing to try to hold this defense bill hostage. We pass it every year,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on Fox News on Tuesday.

“We pass it every year for 60 years. It’s vital for our national security and for our troops. They want to add on all kinds of extraneous non defense measures like a payoff for liberal media companies to form a cartel to work with Big Tech that’ll hurt center-right media outlets, or allowing marijuana distributors to engage in the banking system, or paying off Joe Manchin for his vote for their trillion dollar bill spending bill this summer,” he added.

“None of these have anything to do with our troops in it. The Democrats insist on adding these extraneous measures to the defense bill,” he added.

The National Defense Authorization Act — known as the NDAA — is a yearly bill that Congress passes to authorize the activities, policies, and spending by the Department of Defense.

It is seen has yearly “must-pass” legislation, since it authorizes the DOD to conduct its day-to-day business, including everything from paying troops, beginning new weapons programs, and carrying out policy.

It has passed for 62 years without fail — one of the rare pieces of legislation to do so. However, this year, Democrats see the bill as a last-ditch vehicle to push through policies and reforms it will not be able to once Republicans take the House beginning January 3, 2023.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also blasted Democrats for their attempt to fill the bill with unrelated items in what is known as a “Christmas tree” bill.

“House and Senate Democrats are still obstructing efforts to close out the NDAA by trying to jam in unrelated items with no relationship whatsoever to defense, we’re talking about a grab bag of miscellaneous pet priorities,” McConnell said on the Senate floor.

“My colleagues across the aisle need to cut their unrelated hostage taking and put a bipartisan bill on the floor,” he said.

Democrats are trying to include the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which would allow mainstream media outlets to form a cartel to negotiate with Big Tech, to the detriment of independent and conservative media outlets.

Another item is the SAFE Banking Act, pushed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), backed by some Republicans. The bill would let cannabis companies access banking institutions and create grants for state expungement of past marijuana convictions, according to Axios.

Another is the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, sponsored by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), which seeks to “eliminate discrimination and promote women’s health and economic security” for workers limited by “pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition; and for other purposes.”

Democrats are also trying to attach a permitting bill sponsored by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) that would change the permitting process for energy infrastructure and transport natural gas from his home state to Virginia.

Cotton urged his fellow Republican senators to filibuster the bill if the unrelated items are not stripped.
