Rep Louie Gohmert Suggests Federal Electronic Surveillance on Jan. 6 Was Illegal

Speaking as a former prosecutor and three-term District Judge, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) told The Epoch Times, “if you’re going to have electronic surveillance of people there has to be warrants.”

As Gohmert explained, “FISA courts have granted warrants,” with “no particular clarity” and “no probable cause that a crime’s been committed or that this person engaged in a crime.”

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) was established under the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). “Pursuant to FISA,” the FISC website explains, “the Court entertains applications submitted by the United States Government for approval of electronic surveillance, physical search, and other investigative actions for foreign intelligence purposes.”

Regarding domestic electronic surveillance, the Department of Justice (DOJ) website, “Because of the well-recognized intrusive nature of many types of electronic surveillance, especially wiretaps and ‘bugs,’ and the Fourth Amendment implications of the government’s use of these devices in the course of its investigations, the relevant statutes (and related Department of Justice guidelines) provide restrictions on the use of most electronic surveillance, including the requirement that a high-level Department official specifically approve the use of many of these types of electronic surveillance prior to an Assistant United States Attorney obtaining a court order authorizing interception.”

Furthermore, “when court authorization for video surveillance is deemed necessary, it should be obtained by way of an application and order predicated on Fed. R. Crim. P. 41(b) and the All Writs Act (28 U.S.C. § 1651). The application and order should be based on an affidavit that establishes probable cause to believe that evidence of a Federal crime will be obtained by the surveillance. In addition, the affidavit should comply with certain provisions of the Federal electronic surveillance statutes.”

Gohmert surmised: “When you see confirmed judges are just willing to completely abrogate the U.S. Constitution because they’re the star chamber of the secret court, and they figure nobody will ever find out what they’re doing, then you know when you see there’s an Electronic Surveillance Unit, well, something’s not right.”

Gohmert’s concerns with the ESU surveillance are two-fold:

If so, how could a judge approve a warrant for surveillance before a crime has been committed and with no probable cause?

Ward 1 Councilwoman Brianne Nadeau introduced a bill that would protect people coming into the District seeking abortions, saying the council has felt a sense of urgency since the ruling was first leaked. While all 13 council members support this bill, Congress has the final say over legislation introduced here in the District. Bowser expressed her concern and displeasure with the lack of autonomy experienced by the District.

Historic West Virginia Catholic Church Completely Burned to the Ground in Suspected Arson Attack

Pro-abortion extremists called for violence and vandalism against churches in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The St. Colman Catholic Church, better known as the “The Little Catholic Church on Irish Mountain,” was built in 1878 and was declared an official historic site in 1984.

“On 6/26/2022 units from Beaver VFD were alerted to a structure fire at the Saint Colman Catholic Church on Irish Mountain Road in Shady Spring, WV,” the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “Upon arrival we found the structure was already burned to the ground and smoldering. At this time the fire is considered suspicious in nature and is being investigated as arson.”

Anyone with any information regarding the fire is asked to contact the WV State Police, Trooper D. Daniels, the WV State Fire Marshal’s Arson Hotline at 1 (800) 233-3473 or Crime Stoppers of Raleigh County at 304-255-STOP.

Early Monday morning a New York City church was found vandalized with the slogan of pro-abortion extremist group Jane’s Revenge, who has claimed credit for the firebombing of an Oregon pro-life pregnancy center.

In a manifesto posted by Jane’s Revenge on June 15, the group vowed to escalate their attacks and called for others to commit similar acts.

The group expressly took credit for arsons and vandalism at pregnancy centers in “Madison WI, Ft. Collins CO, Reisertown MA, Olympia WA, Des Moines IA, Lynwood WA, Washington DC, Ashville NC, Buffalo NY, Hollywood FL, Vancouver WA, Frederick MA, Denton TX, Gresham OR, Eugene OR, Portland OR, among others.”

They stated, “we promised to take increasingly drastic measures against oppressive infrastructures. Rest assured that we will, and those measures may not come in the form of something so easily cleaned up as fire and graffiti.”

Massive spike in demand for abortion pills as some women say they are 'stockpiling' after bombshell Roe v. Wade SCOTUS ruling

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has led to a huge spike in demand for birth control, emergency contraception and abortion pills.

Women and parents have been stockpiling options over fears that access to family planning resources could be tightened.

Some clinics have reported a fourfold increase in appointments, with nonprofit organization Just the Pill handling 100 requests in the hours after the decision.

Katie Thomas, 42, said she purchased pills for her 16-year-old daughter after learning that abortion would become illegal in the state.

She told The New York Times: 'Just the thought of something happening to my daughter, whether by force or by her choice, and there's an unwanted pregnancy, I want to be able to handle that.

'If I need to handle that on my own, then I will.'

She said she had already been stocking up on the emergency contraceptive Plan B in case her son, 21, and his girlfriend would ever need it, and she bought more on Friday.

Lauren Frazier, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Southeast in Atlanta, said calls have increased about concerned women wanting to know how many pills they can stockpile.

Other abortion and healthcare providers are warning women not to completely clear the shelves to allow others who need pills now to obtain them.

Hey Jane, a start-up providing telemedicine abortions across six states, said website traffic soared 1,000 per cent on Friday and patient demand doubled after the court decision.

At least 10 people are reported dead and hundreds injured after a gas cylinder was dropped and exploded while being loaded onto a ship at Jordan’s Aqaba port, according to media reports.

Video of the incident shows an ISO cylinder reportedly containing 25 tonnes of chlorine fell as it was being loaded by a shoreside crane onto a ship, causing an explosion of yellow gas that quickly engulfed the ship and pier.

A Jordanian government spokesperson told the AFP that the death toll has risen to ten. Another spokesperson said more than 200 people were injured, while other reports are saying over 250 people injured.

Grand Canyon Reports 118 Cases of Gastrointestinal Illness that Closely Resembles with Highly Contagious ‘Norovirus’

The National Park Service announced that an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has been reported at the Grand Canyon between the months of May and June, with up to 90 individuals experiencing symptoms that closely resemble norovirus.

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis or the inflammation of the stomach or intestines in people. According to CDC, norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain and anyone can get infected and sick with the virus.

The National Park Service Office of Public Health issued an illness alert on May 20 while also advising visitors against using water from the nearby Colorado River, side streams, pools and springs, Fox News reported.

The alert stated, “There may have been a time when it was safe to use such sources, but no longer. Any untreated water has the potential to cause illness if it is not properly and carefully disinfected.”

The National Park Service released another update on the illness alert on Saturday. Below is the excerpt:

The National Park Service Office of Public Health has received reports of gastrointestinal illness among >150 private and commercial river rafters and back-country campers during April and May 2022. Symptoms include nausea, stomach cramping/pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. These symptoms are consistent with norovirus, and we have confirmed norovirus from at least eight rafting trips.

Comprehensive control measures have been implemented, and since early June, there has been a marked decrease in reports of illness. We are continuing to monitor and investigate the situation in collaboration with partners at Coconino County Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus – you can get norovirus from an infected person, contaminated food and water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Norovirus causes sudden-onset vomiting and diarrhea that lasts 1–3 days. On rafts and in camps, norovirus can spread quickly. The best way to prevent norovirus is to practice proper hand washing and general cleanliness and ensure the safety of your drinking water.

Public affairs specialist with the Grand Canyon National Park Service Joelle Baird told Fox News Digital on Thursday that they are trying to determine the source of the outbreak.

“We have a cooperative with NPS Office of Public Healthy, Coconino County Health and Human Services and the CDC all working together to try to understand the disease pathway and looking in particular at river and backcountry trips along the Colorado River,” Baird said. “That’s been the primary focus.”

igital World Acquisition Corp, the special purpose acquisition company planning on merging with Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), announced Monday that each member of its board of directors received federal grand jury subpoenas.

The company said that the subponas, along with the federal investigations from the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), could delay or prevent the merger between Digital World and TMTG.

Digital World board of directors members received the subpoenas from the Southern District of New York jury on June 16. Like the previous SEC subpoena, the grand jury asked for the members to provide "various documents and information regarding, among other things, Digital World’s due diligence regarding TMTG [and] communications regarding and due diligence of potential targets other than TMTG."

The jury also requested information about the company's filings and communications with Rocket One Capital, Digital World stated in the SEC form.

Bruce Garelick, Rocket One Capital's chief strategy officer, according to Reuters, resigned from Digital World's board of directors.

Digital World said last week that it was on track to merge with TMTG, the parent company of Truth Social. This would allow Trump's technology business to be publicly traded.

"TMTG is focused on reclaiming the American people's right to free expression. Every day, our team works tirelessly to sustain Truth Social's rapid growth, onboard new users, and add new features. We encourage-and will cooperate with-oversight that supports the SEC's important mission of protecting retail investors," TMTG said in a press release after the release of the SEC filing.

The American Hebrew Academy will start housing immigrant children at the boarding school campus in July, the Board of Directors announced Friday.

The new leasing deal will give the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families’ (ACF) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) the campus for use as a transitional space.

The Unaccompanied Children program through ORR provides transitional housing for children who have come across the United border alone. The program then works to place the children with family or provide a “vetted sponsro.”

During their time at the Greensboro site, the federal agency will provide schooling, mental and medical services, case management, legal services, and recreational opportunities.

…The school on the 100-acre campus closed in 2019. It will now be leased to the federal government for five years, during which the American Hebrew Academy will provide educational support.

In 2019, the school was valued at $84.5 million. It has 31 buildings, 35 resident staff apartments, an 88,000 square food $18 million dollars athletic center, and a natatorium along with a 22-acre lake.

Up to 800 people will be hired to fulfill functions and provide services at the Hebrew Academy.

Jobs will include administrators, teachers, counselors, medical care professionals, and other workers to oversee the facility and meet the needs of unaccompanied children.

The academy has a particular need for Spanish-speaking workers.

Mr Felton told the inquiry he was admitted to the children's ward at the LGH with pneumonia in 1989 when he was 13.

He said late that night, he asked for a drink of water and a male nurse asked him to follow him to the kitchen.

Mr Felton told the inquiry the nurse gave him a glass of water but proceeded to pull down his pants and touched him inappropriately and made "other gestures that he was going to do things".

"What he did, I'm not going to go into that, it wasn't nice and nobody should ever have to feel like that," Mr Felton said.

"That night changed my life."

Mr Felton told the inquiry he told his parents what had happened and there was a meeting between the family, two nurses, the director of clinical services, Dr Peter Renshaw, and someone they were told was a detective.

He said his father asked for the male nurse — who the commission is calling "George" — to be charged and investigated and, at the end of the meeting, Dr Renshaw told him there would be a full investigation and "hope your son doesn't remember".

CDC Caught Using False Data To Recommend Kids’ COVID Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showcased highly misleading data about the risk of COVID-19 to kids when its expert vaccine advisers voted to recommend vaccines for children under five years old.

The agency featured a pre-print study ranking causes of death in children when it presented data to its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) earlier this month, after which the committee voted to recommend kids aged six months through four years get vaccinated for COVID-19. The study claimed to show that COVID-19 was a leading cause of death for children in the United States during the coronavirus pandemic, but observers quickly pointed out major flaws in the data which rendered it misleading.

The paper ranks COVID-19 as a top six cause of death for age brackets from 0-19, including under one year old, 1-4 years old, 5-9 years old, 10-14 years old and 15-19 years old. It’s unclear why the authors include 18- and 19-year-olds in pediatric data. A majority of the researchers involved in the paper are from the United Kingdom, where the age of majority is 18 in most jurisdictions.

However, one misleading aspect of the paper, as first pointed out by covid-georgia.com, is that it ranks cumulative COVID-19 deaths alongside annual rates for other causes for death. For instance, in the 1-4 age group, the paper ranks cumulative COVID-19 deaths as the 5th leading cause of death, ahead of heart disease and influenza. But further down the list, it ranks annual COVID-19 deaths in eighth. For every single age group, the cumulative COVID-19 death rate is more than double the annualized death rate.

Another big issue with the CDC data presentation is the conflation of deaths caused directly by COVID-19 versus those for which COVID-19 was just a “contributing” factor. The authors state “we only consider Covid-19 as an underlying (and not contributing) cause of death,” but that is false.

Barstool founder Dave Portnoy said it is "too dangerous" to vote Republican

Since the landmark Dobbs decision was handed down, many public figures crawled out of the woodwork to give their takes on why the decision was the wrong one. Some notable examples came from Dave Portnoy and Kevin Clancy of Barstool Sports.

Barstool Sports (Barstool), the wildly popular sports and culture site which contains a network of podcasts, shows, and blogs has marketed itself toward the “common man.”

When outlets like ESPN and Sports Illustrated began to publish openly left-wing opinions and topics that alienated the average sports fan, Barstool provided an alternative.

Because of this, Barstool was often the object of derision from the far left. The Daily Beast has referred to Barstool’s brand as “white male grievance culture”, calling Portnoy, the founder and president of Barstool, a “misogynistic troll-king”. The article also focuses on allegations of sexual harassment made by several female writers at the site toward several male colleagues, suggesting that the brand promotes a culture of misogyny.

Some on the political right even coined the term “Barstool Conservatism“, referring to the culture promoted by Barstool. The idea is that the culture war would be fought on a different front than it had been in the 80s and 90s, but on “vague concerns about political correctness and “SJWs,” opposition to the popularization of so-called critical race theory, sentimentality about the American flag and the military, the rights of male undergraduates to engage in fornication while intoxicated without fear of the Title IX mafia.”

Oddly enough, Barstool and The Daily Beast seem to have the same opinion on the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

While Barstool’s most forward-facing personalities lamented the Dobbs decision, this is not the first time that they have at least paid lip service to woke causes. In a recent video, Barstool’s Kevin Clancy discussed the recent winner of Maxim’s ‘Sexiest Woman Alive’, golfer and model Paige Spiranac (also affiliated with Barstool).

Clancy echoed many of Barstool’s center to center-right fans by mentioning that “sometimes it’s nice to have a good old throwback definition of sexy”. However, Clancy went on to qualify his statement by adding that “trans women are beautiful”. It seems as if “Barstool conservatism” longs for the days where political correctness wasn’t so rampant, but is always compromising with the same people who seek to damage their reputations.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A lawyer who aided former President Donald Trump’s efforts to undo the 2020 election results said in a federal court filing Monday that federal agents seized his cell phone last week.

John Eastman said the agents took his phone as he left a restaurant last Wednesday evening, the same day federal law enforcement officials conducted similar activity around the country as part of broadening investigations into efforts by Trump allies to overturn the election results. Eastman said the agents who approached him appeared to be serving a warrant from the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General.

The action was disclosed in a filing in federal court in New Mexico in which Eastman challenges the legitimacy of the warrant, calling it overly broad, and asks that a court force the federal government to return his phone. The filing does not specify where exactly agents seized his phone, and a lawyer for Eastman did not immediately return an email seeking comment.

Federal agents last week served a raft of subpoenas related to a scheme by Trump allies to put forward alternate, or fake, slates of electors in hopes of invalidating the election won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Also Wednesday, agents searched the Virginia home of Jeffrey Clark, a Trump Justice Department official who encouraged Trump’s challenges of the election results.

A spokeswoman for the inspector general declined to comment.

Eastman has been a central figure in the ongoing hearings by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, though he has not been among the witnesses to testify.

Voicemail indicates Joe Biden knew of Hunter deals with ‘spy chief of China’

Joe Biden called his son Hunter in late 2018 to discuss a New York Times article detailing the younger Biden’s dealings with a Chinese oil tycoon accused of economic crimes – telling him, “I think you’re clear,” according to a report Monday.

The voicemail, discovered on a cell phone backup contained on Hunter Biden’s infamous discarded laptop, would appear to contradict President Biden’s continued denial that he ever talked with his disgraced 52-year-old son about his overseas business transactions — and was aware they could be improper.

“Hey pal, it’s Dad,” Joe Biden said, the Daily Mail reported. “It’s 8:15 on Wednesday night. If you get a chance just give me a call. Nothing urgent. I just wanted to talk to you.”

Biden then made his intentions clear.

“I thought the article released online, it’s going to be printed tomorrow in the Times, was good,” Biden continued. “I think you’re clear. And anyway if you get a chance give me a call, I love you.”

During a campaign appearance in Iowa in September 2019, Joe Biden said, “I have never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings.” His former press secretary, Jen Psaki, and his chief of staff, Ron Klain, have both repeatedly echoed that sentiment.

The unearthed voice message renewed calls for a probe of the now-president’s handling and knowledge of his son’s overseas dealings.

“Joe Biden said he ‘never spoke’ with Hunter about his business dealings. That is simply not true. We need to know what Joe Biden knew and when he knew it,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, told The Post Monday.

“This voicemail is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the evidence mounting against the Biden Crime Family. When Republicans take back Congress, we will use our Congressional power of oversight to uncover the truth for every American as a matter of national security.”

Former White House Staffer Confirms Jan. 6 Committee Lied About DOJ Attorney

Over the weekend, former Department of Justice lawyer Ken Klukowski called on the Jan. 6 Committee to release the full transcript of his deposition testimony to correct the lies they told about him to the American public. Now The Federalist has exclusively obtained a statement from a former White House staffer confirming Klukowski’s claims.

Last Thursday, the Jan. 6, 2021 show trial continued, with the Democrat-stacked committee presenting testimony concerning a draft letter Jeff Clark, a former assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice, proposed sending to the Georgia legislature.

That draft letter, dated December 28, 2020, stated the Department of Justice was investigating the 2020 election and recommended the Georgia legislature convene a special session to “evaluate the irregularities in the 2020 election including violations of Georgia election law,” and “determine whether those violations show which candidate for President won the most legal votes in the November 3 election.” The draft letter then suggested the General Assembly could appoint an alternative set of electors based on its findings.

The draft letter’s signature line included spaces for Clark, Acting Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen, and Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue. But when Clark pitched the idea of sending the letter to Georgia officials, Rosen and Donoghue rejected the idea out of hand, because it was “not the department’s role to suggest or dictate to state legislatures how they should select their electors,” and “for the department to insert itself into the political process this way,” Donoghue told the committee, “may very well have spiraled us into a constitutional crisis.”

Donoghue was blunter with Clark in person, with Donoghue testifying he told Clark, “What you are doing is nothing less than the United States Justice Department meddling in the outcome of a presidential election.”

While last Thursday’s hearing by the Jan. 6 Committee centered on Clark and his efforts to have the letter sent to the Georgia legislature, the committee connected another DOJ attorney to Clark’s efforts, Klukowski—and did so by blatantly lying to the American public.

The Jan. 6 Committee Is Lying

Klukowski called out the Jan. 6 Committee’s fraud over the weekend in a public statement that began: “The January 6 Committee falsely accused me on Thursday of being a go-between in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election. That accusation is false both in its broad outlines and its details. Since the Committee first contacted me, I have cooperated without hesitation, provided it with hundreds of documents, and sat for many hours of recorded depositions. The information produced from those efforts fully contradicts the Committee’s statements regarding my actions, yet the Committee has chosen to keep such information to itself rather than share it with the public.”

The former DOJ lawyer then detailed in his public statement four false accusations levied against him by the Jan.6 Committee. First, Klukowski exposed Rep. Liz Cheney’s false portrayal of him as being sent by John Eastman to work under Clark. While Cheney fraudulently told the country that Klukowski “was specifically assigned to work under Jeff Clark,” Klukowski provided the committee documents establishing that his transfer to “the Civil Division of the DOJ was in the works since July 2020, long before Jeff Clark was the acting head of that Division.”

Rudy Giuliani’s alleged attacker walks free after charges downgraded

The ShopRite worker arrested for allegedly hitting Rudy Giuliani on the back inside a Staten Island supermarket walked free from court Monday after his charges were downgraded.

Daniel Gill, 39, who was still dressed in his ShopRite uniform following his Sunday arrest, kept his head down and refused to answer questions as he left Staten Island Criminal Court after his arraignment Monday.

His charges were downgraded to third-degree assault, third-degree menacing, and second-degree harassment over the caught-on-camera attack inside the supermarket.

Gill, who had no priors, was initially charged with second-degree assault involving a person over age 65.

Judge Gerianne Abriano refused the Staten Island DA’s Office’s request for supervised release and instead let Gill go on his own recognizance.

Sri Lanka Suspends Fuel Sales Amid Economic Collapse; Asks Russians For Help

A broke and extremely cash-strapped Sri Lanka halted all fuel sales except for essential services in a desperate attempt to manage a severe fuel shortage – allowing the government to buy some time and send two government officials to Russia to negotiate a fuel deal.

"From midnight today, no fuel will be sold except for essential services like the health sector, because we want to conserve the little reserves we have," government spokesman Bandula Gunawardana said in a pre-recorded statement, obtained by AFP News.

The Sri Lankan government announced only essential services would operate and be allowed access to fuel until July 10 because of a fuel shortage

"Sri Lanka has never faced such a severe economic crisis in its history," Gunewardena added.

The move comes less than a week after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the debt-laden economy of the island nation has "completely collapsed:"

"We are now facing a far more serious situation beyond the mere shortages of fuel, gas, electricity, and food. Our economy has faced a complete collapse.

Pennsylvania Drag Queen Faces 25 Child Pornography Charges

The arrested drag queen counseled children at a "safe haven" for LBGT youth

A drag queen who counseled children at a “safe haven” for LBGTQ youth has been arrested charged with 25 counts of child pornography, according to a report from Penn Live.

Brice Williams, who worked at the “safe haven” in Harrisburg, PA, is charged with 25 counts of child pornography for at least 49 photos and 25 videos of naked, prepubescent boys. According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Williams, a Chambersburg native, downloaded the photos between May and December 2020.

According to reports, some of the extremely graphic images depicted adults performing sexual acts on minors. Authorities said the victims were under the age of 18, but did not provide more details.

The affidavit said the photo and video downloads were linked to Williams’ email and home addresses.

The child pornography was downloaded under the name “Ana D,” the affidavit further said. The arrested drag queen reportedly performs under an “Anastasia Diamond” stage name.

In July 2021, Williams sat down for an interview with Penn Live to discuss the “safe haven” for LBGTQ youth. GLO Harrisburg offers a “safe space” for “LBGTQ youth of color to do HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness work.”

“I feel as though this is so important because I know there are little kids like me who are queer who are Black who are still not able to look up to anyone,” Williams told PennLive. “So that’s the reason why I got into this line of work. I wanted to make … a big impact for folks in my community.”

In 2020, the LGBT Center of Central PA gave Williams the 2020 Rising Star Award.

Williams is currently being held on $100,000 bail, though he has reportedly been unable to pay. He will be held at the Franklin County Correctional Center, officials said.

More than 200 injured as substance believed to be chlorine gas leaks from vessel damaged in transport

At least 10 people died and more than 250 were injured on Monday, when toxic gas leaked from a tank in the Jordanian port of Aqaba, state media has reported.

The death toll is expected to rise, officials said, with hospitals in the port city at maximum capacity.

The leak happened after a tank filled with a substance reported to be liquid chlorine fell during transportation, said Amer al-Sartawi, the spokesperson of the Public Security Directorate.

Footage circulating on social media showed the spread of the gas leak.

The southern beach in the governorate of Aqaba was evacuated before the leak was brought under control, the official said.

"The area was immediately isolated, and specialists began to deal with the accident. Meanwhile, the Civil Defence transferred a number of injuries to the hospital, and they are all under treatment," the spokesman added.

The injured were taken to Prince Hashem Military Hospital in the city of Iba'a, as well as the Islamic Hospital, and a third private hospital, in addition to those treated at a temporary field hospital.

The Jordan Social Security Corporation said it was maintaining a close eye on the condition of the injured in case of air evacuation to other hospitals.

Jordanian Prime Minister Bishr al-Khasawneh has ordered an investigation, to be headed by the minister of interior.

An environmental official was quoted by Jordanian media as saying "the impact of gas is currently declining, and there is no harm to public health as a result of the accident".

The head of the chemical industries sector in the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Ahmed al-Bas, said the gas was "liquid chlorine", which he described as a basic industrial substance used as a steriliser.

Al-Bas said high concentrations of the gas were toxic, but low concentrations were not harmful.

He stressed that the impact of Monday's leak "will fade within a very short time with the spread of gas in the atmosphere, especially since the place is open".

"In the first moments of leakage and explosion, the gas is fatal, and after a short period it becomes harmful and causes a coma, then when it vanishes in the air it becomes without effect," he said.

Al-Bas added that "within hours" of the leak, there would be no risk to humans from the gas.

NBC News anchor Chuck Todd said on Friday that the Supreme Court overturning the landmark abortion decisions Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey proved that the 2016 election was the “most consequential election in more than 100 years.”

Todd lamented about “the trust in the court and the erosion of that and making it be viewed as an extraordinarily partisan institution.”

“We already have that in the House and the Senate and I think now particularly what happened this week, particularly how Donald Trump appointed the Supreme Court, how he went about it, particularly in the whole Scalia thing with McConnell and all that,” he continued, referring to then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) not filling the Supreme Court vacancy in 2016 when Justice Antonin Scalia died. Trump, having won that year’s election, picked Neil Gorsuch to succeed Scalia. Gorsuch was in the majority in Friday’s ruling.

Todd echoed the sentiments of those who are against Friday’s decision.

“There really is a lot of people who believe this is a rigged court. This court’s makeup isn’t ‘fair and square.’ It really isn’t representative of where the country is and even was. And I think that is only going to add to cynicism. It’s only going to add to that.”

Todd remarked that the ruling is in part due to Trump’s election as president.

“I don’t think we can fully ever appreciate the 2016 presidential election is going to turn out to be perhaps the most consequential election in more than a 100 years. The fallout from that election, right, particularly you look at courts,” he said. “We can go through a whole thing… But just think about what has changed in America, in culture and society, due to the results of the 2016 election.”

The court said on Monday it found deficiencies within Credit Suisse both with regard to the management of client relations with the criminal organisation and with regard to the monitoring of the implementation anti-money laundering rules.

"These deficiencies enabled the withdrawal of the criminal organisation's assets, which was the basis for the conviction of the bank's former employee for qualified money laundering," the court said.

"The company could have prevented the infringement if it had fulfilled its organisational obligations," the presiding judge said in handing down the verdict, adding that the former employee's superiors had been "passive".

Credit Suisse said the case arose from a investigation that dated back more than 14 years.

"Credit Suisse is continuously testing its anti-money laundering framework and has been strengthening it over time, in accordance with evolving regulatory standards," the bank said.

"Generating compliant business growth in line with legal and regulatory requirements is key for Credit Suisse."

Credit Suisse was fined 2 million Swiss francs ($2.1 million). The court also ordered the confiscation of assets worth more than 12 million francs that the drug gang held in accounts at Credit Suisse, and ordered the bank to relinquish more than 19 million francs – the amount that could not be confiscated due to internal deficiencies at Credit Suisse.

The court handed the former employee, who cannot be named under Swiss privacy laws, a suspended 20-month prison sentence and a fine for money laundering.

The presiding judge said she had failed to fulfil her role in the bank's "first line of defence".

The former banker's attorney said she would appeal against the "unfounded and unfair decision", noting she had not made any financial gain.

"This judgment places the responsibility for money laundering on people without any serious training or experience," her attorney said.

Corruption and money laundering experts had said the fact that Switzerland had taken legal action against a global banking player like Credit Suisse could send a powerful message in a country famous for its banking industry.

"This has the potential to be a watershed moment for Switzerland," Mark Pieth, a money laundering expert at the University of Basel, said on the eve of the trial.

"What is significant about this case is that Switzerland is taking legal action against a company and not just any company - Credit Suisse is one of the jewels in the Swiss crown."

Swiss private banks have adopted tougher anti-money laundering checks after an international regulatory crackdown to prevent money laundering.

Under Swiss law, a company can be held liable for inadequate organisation or failing to take all reasonable measures to prevent a crime from happening.

In the Credit Suisse case, prosecutors alleged the former relationship manager helped to conceal the criminal origins of money for clients through more than 146 million Swiss francs in transactions, including 43 million francs in cash, some of it stuffed into suitcases. read more

The relationship manager, who left Credit Suisse in 2010, was not in the courtroom on Monday.

During court hearings in February, the former relationship manager said Credit Suisse learned of murders and cocaine smuggling allegedly connected to the Bulgarian gang but continued to manage cash that became the focus of the trial.

The former banker said during the hearings she informed her managers about events, including two murders, associated with the clients, but that they decided to pursue the business nonetheless.

Credit Suisse has disputed the illegal origin of the money, saying that a former Bulgarian wrestler and his circle operated legitimate businesses in construction, leasing and hotels.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Biden’s ICE Nominee, Withdraws

Harris County, Texas, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, President Joe Biden’s pick to run U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), withdrew Sunday.

Biden nominated Gonzalez in April 2021 and he quickly faced questions from Republicans who voiced concerns that he had opposed an ICE screening database. The voluntary database allows for inmates to be screened to determine immigration status, and Gonzalez ultimately opted to end the program for his office in 2017, the Houston Chronicle reported at the time.

Gonzalez wrote Biden a letter detailing his decision to withdraw from consideration for the position, The Washington Post reported on Monday. In addition to questions over his decisions as Harris County sheriff, Gonzalez’s nomination was stalled amid unconfirmed allegations of domestic violence, ABC 13 reported.

“I arrive at this difficult decision with the understanding that the challenges of preserving both the integrity of America’s borders and our country’s global standing as a beacon of light for those seeking freedom and opportunity have never been greater,” Gonzalez wrote to Biden, according to The Post.

Melissa Gonzalez, his wife, has denied ever making a complaint against him, The Hill reported. Melissa Gonzalez wrote in March that “any suggestion that I filed or made a complaint against my husband is false and defamatory,” The Hill also noted, referencing the unverified allegations of domestic violence.

Gonzalez cited increased crime in Houston as reason for the withdrawal as well, telling Biden that he “must devote” his “full, undivided attention and energy toward fulfilling the duties that the people of Harris County elected me to perform.”

ICE will now face its sixth year in a row without a confirmed leader, The Post noted. The withdrawal coincides with a border crisis that has plagued the U.S. since Biden took office. The president has faced criticism from Republicans and some Democrats over his handling of the situation at the border.

House Democrats are working on legislation to protect people's period tracker data

In a letter posted on her official website, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has revealed that House Democrats have been working on legislation to protect personal data collected by reproductive health trackers. It's one of the three avenues the lawmakers are exploring following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. "Many fear that this information could be used against women by a sinister prosecutor in a state that criminalizes abortion," she explained, though she didn't expound on how the lawmakers plan to protect people's personal data.

Users have been swapping their period trackers for others they believe can offer them more privacy ever since the Supreme Court decision dropped. It's not unusual for companies to sell user information or to cooperate with law enforcement, and people are concerned about the possibility of investigators using that data to identify them if they ever seek an abortion. As TechCrunch reported, a number of reproductive health apps enjoyed a surge of new signups over the weekend.

One of those apps is Flo, which announced that it plans to launch an anonymous mode shortly after the Supreme Court decision came out. The mode is supposed to remove one's personal information from their account so that they can't be identified, but Flo has yet to reveal when it will become available. It's worth noting that Flo's average daily installs has been on the decline, based on Apptopia numbers cited by TechCrunch, likely because it has a history of sharing private data with third parties.

Back in 2019, The Wall Street Journal listed Flo as one of the apps that had been giving Facebook access to people's sensitive data. Two years later, Flo settled with the FTC over allegations that it was sharing information with the social network, Google and other third-party companies. As part of that settlement, Flo now has to explicitly ask for user consent before it can give external services access to their personal health information.

Despite the House Speaker's announcement that House Democrats are working "to protect the health and freedom of American women," there's no guarantee that the legislation they're cooking up would be signed into law. It's always smart to take a closer look at how apps are protecting user data by reading their "nutritional label" on iOS or their "safety section" in the Play Store on Android. But for those who want to be truly safe, perhaps the best solution is to not use a period tracking app at all.

"COLOMBO, June 28 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka will allow companies from oil-producing countries to import and sell fuel, the power and energy minister said on Tuesday, ending a duopoly as it tries to overcome a shortage of petrol and diesel that is exacerbating an economic crisis.

The Cabinet decision came as the minister, Kanchana Wijesekera, headed to Qatar and a colleague was due to arrive in Russia on Sunday for talks on energy deals with officials there.

Sri Lanka is suffering its worst economic crisis since its independence, with foreign exchange reserves at a record low of $1.92 billion, according to the Central Bank, though analysts estimate a lower level of useable funds.

The island of 22 million people is struggling to pay for essential imports of food, medicine and, most critically, fuel.

The government closed urban schools for about two weeks from Tuesday and allowed fuel supplies only to services deemed essential like health, trains and buses as stocks would only last only a week or so based on regular demand.

"Cabinet approval was granted to open up the fuel import and retail sales market to companies from oil-producing nations," Wijesekera said on Twitter.

"They will be selected on the ability to import fuel and operate without forex requirements from the CBSL (central bank) and banks for the first few months of operations."

The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) controls about 80% of the fuel market and Lanka IOC LIOC.CM, a unit of Indian Oil Corporation IOC.NS, the rest.

The Cabinet also allowed bunkering companies already registered with the government to import jet fuel.

Sri Lanka needs about 1.2 million litres of so-called A1 jet fuel a day to supply airlines but the CPC has been unable to meet the requirement, the government said in a statement.

"The Cabinet made this decision to ensure that flights are not disrupted due to the fuel shortage," it said.

Wijesekera flew to Qatar late on Monday night while Education Minister Susil Premajayanth is due to arrive in Russia on July 3.

Wijesekera hopes to find a long-term fuel supplier in Qatar who is "willing to work with Sri Lanka's foreign exchange and other challenges", said a ministry official, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to media.

Wijesekera told reporters on Sunday Sri Lanka had been in talks with various countries, including Russia, for weeks on buying fuel.

Traffic was light on Tuesday on the streets of the main city of Colombo, with city schools shut and most public and private sector employees working from home.

But buses and trains were running and shops were open for groceries and other essentials."
