Ukraine accuses Russia of bombing school where civilians were sheltering

Multiple people are trapped under rubble, local authorities believe

Ukrainian officials have accused Russian forces of hitting a school located in the besieged city of Mariupol. The facility was sheltering some 400 civilians, primarily women, children and the elderly, the city’s council alleged on Sunday in a Telegram post.

“Yesterday, the Russian occupiers dropped bombs on an art school No 12,” the council claimed. “It is known that the building was destroyed, and civilians are still under the rubble.”

The council did not estimate the number of potential casualties resulting from the alleged school bombing. No footage from the scene corroborating the claim has emerged either, while the Russian military has remained silent on the matter.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian authorities accused Moscow of bombing the Mariupol Drama Theater, initially claiming that over 1,000 civilians sheltering there had been killed. The Ukrainian account of the events, however, promptly changed as it turned out that over 200 civilians were rescued from the bomb shelter under the destroyed building, while no one was apparently killed in the incident.

The Russian military denied targeting the theater altogether, pinning the blame for the bombing on neo-Nazi fighters with the notorious Azov regiment. Russian military spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said that “reliable information” from locals indicated that the militants blew up the building themselves to frame Russia.

Mariupol became the site of intense urban warfare after the southeastern Ukrainian city was cut off and encircled by Russian regular troops and those of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Moscow attacked its neighbor in late February, following a seven-year standoff over Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia says it’s struck another mercenary base in Ukraine

More than 100 Ukrainian special ops troops and foreign soldiers of fortune were eliminated, according to Moscow

Russian forces hit a Ukrainian special forces training center early on Sunday, killing more than 100 local troops and foreign mercenaries, the Ministry of Defense has said.

A Ukrainian Special Operations Forces training center near the town of Ovruch in the northern Zhytomyr Region, which hosted the mercenaries, was targeted by “high-precision air-launched missiles,” ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said during a briefing.

The airstrike has eliminated more than 100 Ukrainian special ops troops and foreign soldiers of fortune, he added.

A week ago, Russia destroyed another mercenary base at the Yavoriv range in the western Lviv region, saying that up to 180 foreign fighters were killed there.

Kiev disputed those numbers and put the death toll at 35 people. It also insisted that all those who died in the attack were Ukrainian.

However, after the strike, reports emerged of mercenaries fleeing to neighboring Poland in large numbers. Some would-be combatants have complained on social media and in interviews that the conflict turned out not to be what they expected.

Russia has warned that it was aware of all the locations of mercenaries on the territory of Ukraine and promised to continue targeting them “without mercy.”

“All further responsibility for the death of this category of foreign citizens in Ukraine rests solely with the leadership of these countries," who encourage its people to answer to Kiev’s repeated calls for help in the conflict, Konashenkov said last week.

Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine last month following a seven-year standoff over Kiev's failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the breakaway Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

The German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc.

Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it had been planning to retake the two republics by force.

Zelensky orders Ukrainian TV to conduct 'round-the-clock information marathon'

Kiev has ordered the creation of a single “marathon” channel

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law introducing a “unified information policy” that provides for the merger of all national news TV channels into a single “round-the-clock information marathon.”

Citing martial law, the decree signed by the leader on March 19 says the goal is to combat “active dissemination of misinformation by the aggressor state (Russia).”

According to the text of the decision made by the Security and Defense Council, the unified information policy is necessary to “to tell the truth about the war” and is “a priority issue of national security” amid Moscow’s ongoing military offensive.

Martial law was introduced in Ukraine on February 24, the day Moscow launched its military attack against the country, and will be in force until at least the end of April.

The new channel will be known as “Unique News #UArazom,” according to the decree.

The council ordered the merger of “all national TV channels with broadcast grid consisting mainly of information” and analytical programs into one round-the-clock information channel. The new policy came into force immediately after the president’s approval.

Russia and Ukraine have consistently blamed each other for spreading disinformation amid the ongoing war.

The implementation of the “unified information policy” came on the same day that Zelensky, also citing martial law, announced a move to outlaw 11 political parties, including the parliament’s second-largest group, Opposition Platform – For Life, for their “connections” with Russia.

Earlier this month, Russian lawmakers approved legislation banning the dissemination of ‘fake news’ about Moscow’s military operation. Those found guilty under the law could be placed behind bars for up to 15 years. Russia’s media regulator Roskomnadzor also blocked access to several liberal news outlets, including Ekho Moskvy radio, Dozhd TV channel, and the Latvian-based Russian-language website Meduza.

Responding to Ukraine’s banning of political parties on Sunday, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin accused Kiev of trying to “shut the mouths” of people who disagree with it. Meanwhile, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev remarked sarcastically that Zelensky had “taken another step towards the Western ideals of democracy.”

Without canceling flights, European airlines have warned pilots to be on the lookout for faulty data. Signals stretched between Finland, currently holding Nordic War Games, and the Mediterranean Sea have been heavily impacted with many reports of spoofed or jammed GPS information. Fingers point at Russia.

Daily Mail: Since the war erupted on February 24, ‘jamming and/or possible spoofing has intensified in geographical areas surrounding the conflict zone and other areas,’ the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said in an online bulletin Thursday.

‘The effects of GNSS jamming and/or possible spoofing were observed by aircraft in various phases of their flights, in certain cases leading to re-routing or even to change the destination due to the inability to perform a safe landing procedure,’ the agency said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was accused of ordering his military to jam these signals in order to disrupt efforts to navigate the region surrounding Ukraine. While there is no definitive evidence, it is a reasonable accusation since there is, realistically, no one else both capable of and benefiting from the jamming attacks.

This would also not be the first time the Russo-Ukrainian conflict resulted in interference with commercial flight paths. In 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a passenger flight, was shot down by rebels in eastern Ukraine whose equipment was supplied by Russia. Additionally, just a few days ago, Putin has established a no-fly zone over the separatist Donbas region in Ukraine.

However, even if this was not the doing of the Russian military, the agency states that it is “unlikely” that they will need to suspend flights. However, they do request all flight personnel to report any anomalies relating to GPS signals. Pilots have also been warned not to rely solely on satellite-based systems, due to the fact that they may at any time come under spoofing or jamming attacks.

Germany is repeating its past mistake from 1938 when Hitler authorized the Gun Control Act that banned “enemies of the state,” such as liberals and Jews, from owning firearms. Trudeau, Putin, Biden, and most world leaders have recently decried citizens as far-right Nazi extremists without valid proof. Anyone could be declared an extremist if they disobey. Germany is taking it to a new extreme by potentially categorizing the entire Alternative for Germany Party (AfG) as dangerous extremists. This group has been vehemently opposed to COVID restrictions as well.

This will begin the trend of allowing governments to disarm people based on their political beliefs. They only want citizens to have guns when they are used to promote the government’s agenda. Any dissenters will be labeled dangerous extremists who post a threat to national security. This exact event has happened numerous times throughout history and resulted in the government murdering millions (e.g., The USSR in 1929 and China in 1935).

Whitmer jobless benefits scandal: Unvetted workers enabled to disburse $39B in taxpayer funds

Michigan's unemployment agency relied on staffing agencies that employed 47 workers with one or more felony convictions, including embezzlement, illegal sale and use of financial transaction devices, identify theft and armed robbery, according to state watchdog.

Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) failed to screen 5,508 workers before giving them access to software that disbursed $39 billion in taxpayer money since March 2020.

An audit released Friday from the Office of Auditor (OAG) General Doug Ringler marked four "material conditions" — the most severe rating — asserting the UIA failed to take multiple safeguards to prevent employees from looting taxpayer money.

The UIA has fired or penalized at least 18 employees so far after a criminal investigation. The audit explains why. Of 139 departed workers, 63, or 45.3%, continued to have access to Michigan's Integrated Data Automated System (MiDAS) to view and make unauthorized claims for an average of 32.6 days post-departure.

This access cost taxpayers $3.8 million in fraud committed by a former worker who pleaded guilty to fraud in July 2020. If that scheme was successful, it would have netted more than $12 million.

The audit says the UIA and the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) might have "inappropriately released a staffing agency from liability for a $3.8 million in UI fraud."

The audit found that staffing agencies and Michigan Works! Agencies (MWAs) employed 169 workers with one or more misdemeanors and/or felonies, of whom 47 had one or more felony convictions, which included embezzlement, illegal sale and use of financial transaction devices, identify theft, and armed robbery. As of Dec. 31, 2020, 71 people with similar criminal records were working for the UIA, the audit says.

Moreover, the UIA didn't execute data sharing agreements in a timely manner with three staffing agencies and 16 MWAs or ensure completion of confidentiality agreements by two staffing agencies and MWAs.

The audit "identified 21 (52.5%) workers who reportedly worked between 2 and 329 hours or an average of 47 hours before completing their initial training," the audit found.

When Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shuttered much of the economy in 2020 trying to slow the spread of COVID-19, the UIA wasn't ready to handle the caseload of Michiganders, much less international fraudsters who targeted the state's aging security systems. Michigan's unemployment rate spiked to 22.7%.

In spring 2020, Michiganders out of work and fraudsters filed a peak exceeding 388,000 claims in one week — 77 times more than an average pre-pandemic week — overwhelming the system. The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) approved a majority of the claims, including many of the fraudulent ones.

In an interview with former BlackRock advisor Edward Dowd on “RFK Jr. The Defender Podcast,” Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Dowd discussed the financial and moral implications of fraudulent data from the COVID-19 vaccine trials.

Dowd, a managing director with BlackRock from 2002 to 2012, said, “what tipped me off to the fraud” was when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it wouldn’t release the trial data for 75 years. He knew something wasn’t right.

Dowd told Kennedy:

“The FDA is in on the cover-up, something went down. The other tip for me was in November of last year, a friend of mine from the biotech industry discovered that Pfizer had failed their all-cause mortality endpoint. And that was not available to us when this fanfare occurred in November of 2020, when they all got excited about 95% efficacy.”

Dowd concluded, “the FDA didn’t really look at this clinical trial data” yet rushed it through due to political pressure or “maybe straight-up bribes,” but either way, he said, the vaccines should have never been approved.

Kennedy and Dowd discussed how the trial numbers were skewed to make it seem the vaccines were effective when the real data showed otherwise.

Kennedy said:

“What it really means is you have to give 22,000 vaccines to prevent one COVID death. And if you’re gonna give 22,000 vaccines, you better make sure that the vaccines don’t kill anybody. Because if they kill one person, you’ve canceled out any benefit.”

Kennedy described how the vaccine makers manipulated the data and the news to maximize profits. He asked Dowd why he thinks there will be consequences.

Dowd said:

“I think there’s enough proof for people to investigate fraud in the clinical data and the FDA’s complicity in this … The tragic part of this is we had to wait for real-world evidence. And the real-world evidence is so awful that there’s gonna be a public outcry. And even though the mainstream media is not participating with this yet, they will. You can’t hide this anymore.”

Dowd also told Kennedy, “investors are slowly waking up to the fact that something is not right” and some are selling their shares in Pfizer and Moderna.

He also said that when the insurance industry awakens to the fraud, there will be greater consequences:

Australia will provide temporary humanitarian visas for Ukrainians, along with an extra $50 million in military and humanitarian support, the federal government has announced.

The temporary humanitarian visas will allow Ukrainians who have already arrived in Australia to stay for up to three years with the ability to work, study and access Medicare.

The federal government is also providing a further $30 million in humanitarian aid and $21 million in military support for Ukraine.

"The people of Ukraine have been defiant and they've asked for more help," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

Around 5,000 Ukrainians have been granted visas to travel to Australia, including skilled migrant and family reunion visas, as well as student and tourist visas.

Once in Australia, they will be eligible to apply for the temporary humanitarian visa, which provide more certainty.

So far, 750 Ukrainians have made it to Australia, with more expected to arrive in coming weeks.

The federal government expects most displaced Ukrainians will want to remain in Europe, but has not put a cap on the number of temporary visas it will offer.

"We are prepared to meet the demand. We haven't set a limit on this," Mr Morrison said.

It was a disastrous decades-long social experiment that destroyed already struggling families and left vulnerable children sexually abused, beaten and worked to the bone.

From the 1920s to 1970s, more than 100,000 British boys and girls were sent to Commonwealth countries including Australia as part of an unprecedented child migration program.

The plan had been to gather up Britain's waifs and offer them a brighter future by transporting them across the oceans to help populate its former colonies.

Parents were told if they really loved their children they would ship them off to sunny Australia where the boys could grow up to be farmers and the girls might marry well.

In reality, thousands of these children were forced into labour at remote workhouses run by groups such as the Fairbridge Society where they were physically and sexually abused.

The victims of this misguided scheme have sometimes been described as 'orphans of the empire' but few were actually orphans. They were more often just trapped in poverty or been stranded by broken homes.

About 10,000 British children were sent to 26 child migrant centres in six Australian states. One of those was Fairbridge Farm School near Molong in central western NSW, which from 1938 to 1974 took in about 1,000 children as young as four.

The Fairbridge Society was the brainchild of South African-born Rhodes scholar Kingsley Fairbridge who set up his first farm school in Western Australia in 1913.

He was supported by the British government which highlighted the choice between 'begging, thieving, disease, prostitution and early death in the British Isles, or learning farming or domestic skills in Australia'.

But the unwitting parents who believed the promises and signed over their sons and daughters were betrayed and their children's free labour was ruthlessly exploited.

I Got Vaccinated Against COVID-19. Here’s Why. | Team Rubicon

I walked through the balmy North Carolina winter into our offsite vaccination center. I bared my arm and took the jab. It was over in seconds. Little pain, so much gain.

As the Chief of Disaster Medicine and a frontline ER doctor at Atrium Health’s Carolina Medical Center I was one of the first people in North Carolina to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. I had helped lead teams during the MERS, Ebola, and now COVID-19 responses. Over the past nine months, I have seen COVID-19 wreak so much devastation that I would have waited in the cold and dark all night to hold my place in line to show the importance of the vaccination.

Even today, up to 50% of Americans are not sure about whether to get the vaccine. I get it, this whole pandemic and the vaccine development process is really complex. And, honestly, I was a little anxious about taking a new type of vaccine too. But the science is solid. By all accounts the process was rigorous. The FDA, CDC and pharmaceutical companies provided transparent information on side effects and efficacy. And, at the end of the day, we have to be able to make decisions without knowing all of the information. This is what we do in crisis and must be what we do to survive in a modern world. I know the exceedingly dangerous consequences of COVID-19, and they are far worse than anything reported with the vaccine.

The fact is that the COVID-19 vaccine is game-changer. It means we are rounding a corner and we can see the dawn slowly coming up over the horizon. It means I get to have more teaching moments with my kids. It means that we have the opportunity to not lose 3,000 Americans a day to this damn virus. It means that if we are smart and if we come together as a community to get all Americans vaccinated, we can get back to the business of living our lives.

I wanted to be first in line for this vaccine to show that I believe in this vaccine is safe and will save lives. Period. So on December 17, four days after my 47th birthday, I rolled up my sleeves, took a bit of ribbing about my lack of “guns,” and got the first of the two shots.

It was less painful than the flu shot and certainly way better than the Anthrax vaccine I got prior to heading to the Middle East. I actually had no pain during the shot and my arm only ached a little for a day. That shot felt way better than wearing an N95 or respirator for eight hours on shift. Hell, it felt better than wearing it for an hour.

For a brief moment, I was excited. But mostly, I felt thankful. Thankful for all of the people who put thousands of hours into developing the vaccine. Thankful to the staff who built an amazing plan to vaccinate our community despite having very little information. Thankful to all of our healthcare workers who stand on the frontlines of this battle and say “not today, not on my shift.” And, thankful to be part of the Greyshirt Nation, filled with so many servant leaders.

I also felt a kind of weary hope. The vaccination marks the beginning of our path to recovery. But it will be a very long road, and I know that we are not out of the woods yet. I just hope people can shelve the contempt and come together as a community. It is the only way we as a nation will survive. Right now, this vaccine is our road out. Americans need the opportunity to earn a paycheck again and to get back to life. The COVID vaccination is the only way that ultimately, we can get our kids back in school, our businesses open, and our communities back on their feet.

For disaster relief volunteers like Team Rubicon’s Greyshirts, the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine will also mean it is time to step back into the arena. As Greyshirts we have a vital role in building trust around the vaccine and will play an important role in scaling vaccination delivery across the country. So, put on your boots, mask up, and get ready to serve.

When you have the chance, get vaccinated yourself. Then motivate your friends and families to get in line. This is the first step in our recovery. But it is only the first step. For the foreseeable future, we still need to wear our masks, physical distance, and wash our hands. We can’t let up. We have to continue those actions straight through this pandemic, even after many of us have been vaccinated. I know it’s a pain in the ass, but you—we—can do it.

While I’ve had the first round of the vaccine now, I still mask in public, I still go max PPE when caring for ill patients, and still confine my social life to virtual happy hours, physically distanced outdoor meetups, and only hang out within my quarantine bubble.

The pandemic is a suck. And it will be a suck until we are all vaccinated. So, let’s step up and get through this together. Take your shot.
