Philip Morris will wind down manufacturing in the country
One of the world’s largest tobacco manufacturers, Philip Morris International (PMI), said on Wednesday it was reducing production volumes and suspending planned investments in Russia amid ongoing supply chain disruptions and a changing regulatory framework.
The announcement comes as major international businesses are pulling out of Russia due to Western sanctions against Moscow over its military offensive in Ukraine.
The previously planned investments in the country by the tobacco giant included new product launches, as well as commercial, innovation, and manufacturing investments. Philip Morris owns such brands as Parliament, Marlboro, Chesterfield, L&M, Next, as well as Heets sticks for IQOS.
PMI clarified that it will continue to pay the salaries of all of its more than 3,200 employees in Russia.
Earlier, UK-listed tobacco firm Imperial Brands also suspended all operations in Russia, following international sanctions against the country.

Convicted Russian agent Maria Butina told the BBC Thursday that she believes Volodymyr Zelensky is "absolutely" a Nazi, even though the Ukrainian president is Jewish.
Butina also said Russia is not shelling Ukraine but the latter nation's own military is firing on cities and civilians within its borders, The Daily Beast reported. "Russia is not bombing citizens," Butina told the BBC's Nick Robinson. "Russian military troops actually are having humanitarian corridors."
Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused to refer to his assault on Ukraine as a "war" or "invasion." Meanwhile, his country has been cracking down on media outlets in their coverage of the conflict, as well as individuals who spread "fake" information about Russia's armed forces, the BBC reported. Those who put out such information could be jailed for up to 15 years, under a new law, which also makes public calls for sanctions against Russia a criminal offense.
In her conversation with Robinson, Butina insisted that Ukraine, not Russia, is the aggressor in the nearly two-week-long war.
Butina pleaded guilty years ago to conspiring to act as an unregistered foreign agent within the U.S. and was sentenced to 18 months in prison before her release early in October 2019. She was accused of trying to infiltrate several conservative groups, such as the National Rifle Association, and trying to establish ties between the Trump administration and Moscow, NPR reported.
Now back in Russia, she has affirmed her loyalty to Russian President Vladimir Putin and serves in the nation's Duma, the lower house of parliament.
During her conversation with Robinson, she said that she and "the majority of Russians" trust Putin and believe that everything is going "as planned."
Asked why Putin won't call Russia's military invasion a war, Butina said it was "because of the purposes" behind Russia's actions. She said that Russia has been warning the world "that the Nazi mood and the Nazi actions in Ukraine" have been on the rise for "actually many years."
She said that Zelensky's actions lead her to view him as a Nazi. When Robinson pointed out that Zelensky is Jewish, she said that she believes "Nazism is not about just one nation."
"It's about killing, murdering, torturing, alienation—based on their race, their gender, their nationality, country of origin," Butina said.
When an increasingly incredulous Robinson asked if Putin, under her definition, qualifies as a Nazi "because he is currently bombing civilians in cities all over Ukraine," Butina replied that Russia is not bombing Ukrainian citizens.
Butina has remained a staunch supporter of Russia on social media since the invasion began. A February 28 Facebook post showed her and several other individuals wearing black shirts emblazoned with a white "Z," a symbol that has come to represent pro-invasion sentiment.

I have covered plenty of U.S. Presidents in my 35-year career as a photojournalist. Since the days of Ronald Reagan, I’ve captured the Commander in Chief in moments from the steps of Air Force One to the local putting greens.
These intersections of my job and theirs is typically scripted: They show up in town and, handed the assignment, I seek a perch from which to take a picture.
But I was doing one of the more mundane parts of my job, hunting for a slice-of-life photo for the next day’s paper, when I crossed paths with the man who would become the nation’s 45th president.
It was a sticky Monday morning in July 1995, when I pulled out of The Palm Beach Post parking lot and headed south on Dixie Highway.
I was in a Toyota Tercel that had outlived its air-conditioning and ahead of me was a factory-fresh Lemans blue Lamborghini Diablo Roadster.
Eager to pass the slow moving sports car worth some 10 times my ride, I pulled ahead only to realize my photo hunt could be over with the man seated behind the Lamborghini’s wheel: Palm Beach part-timer Donald Trump.
What was his glamorous destination?
I followed him.
His first stop? The Mobil gas station at the corner of Forest Hill Boulevard and Dixie.
Before my eyes an international business tycoon renown for ‘The Art of the Deal’ was about to execute his next purchase: gas.
I approached him, identifying myself as a Palm Beach Post photographer, and asked permission to take his picture.
His polite reply: No problem, but I bet this will end up in the tabloids.
It appeared in the July 4, 1995 edition of The Palm Beach Post.

Russia investigates use of conscripts in Ukraine operation
A number of conscripted soldiers have been taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces, Russia’s Defense Ministry has confirmed
Russia’s military acknowledged involvement of conscripted troops into the ongoing operation in neighboring Ukraine on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, we have discovered several facts of the presence of conscripts in the units of the Russian Armed Forces participating in a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, has said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that only professional soldiers have been involved into the operation. Ukrainian officials and Western media alike, however, have claimed that the invasion force had a vast number of conscripts in its ranks.
Nearly all the conscripted troops have already been withdrawn from Ukraine, Konashenkov said, adding thatthe military is currently investigating how they ended up participating in the operation in the first placeto make sure that it would not happen again. He also admitted that the conscripted troops sustained casualties during the conflict, with some of the servicemen ending up captured by the Ukrainian troops.
“A saboteur group of a nationalist battalion attacked one of the units performing the logistical support tasks.A number of servicemen, including conscripts, were captured,” Konashenkov stated without providing any specific figures.
Russia launched its large-scale military operation in neighboring Ukraine in late February, explaining it was the only option left to protect Donetsk and Lugansk. President Putin also outlined that the aim was to “denazify” and “demilitarize” the country. Kiev branded the attack “unprovoked”, claiming it had no plans to re-take the regions by force.
Donetsk and Lugansk split from Ukraine back in 2014 following the Maidan coup in Kiev, which ousted the country’s democratically elected government. The new Ukrainian leadership launched a military operation to quell the rebellion that ultimately devolved into years violence in Ukraine’s east.

President Trump’s plane made an emergency landing on Saturday after one of the aircraft’s four engines failed.
Trump had just left a Republican National Committee-hosted donor retreat in New Orleans when his private pilot was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing.
Politico reported:
Former President Donald Trump’s plane made an emergency landing on Saturday evening following his speech at a Republican National Committee-hosted donor retreat in New Orleans, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The plane was in the air for between 20 and 30 minutes before one of the engines failed and the pilot of the private plane decided to turn around and return to the New Orleans airport, one of the sources said. The plane was en route to Palm Beach, Fla., where Trump resides at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Audio of the communications between the pilot and the air traffic control tower revealed that the landing was described as “emergency in nature,” according to the source, who had been briefed on the recording.
Once the plane was on the ground, the RNC scrambled and reached out to a donor and found the former president another plane. Trump eventually landed in Palm Beach around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Trump-endorsed Arizona Gubernatorial Candidate Kari Lake filed an amicus brief in the Arizona Supreme Court in the AZGOP’s lawsuit against Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs to protect Arizona’s elections.
The Gateway Pundit reported on the lawsuit to ban unconstitutional drop boxes and no-excuse mail-in voting in Arizona.
The lawsuit was filed in the Arizona Supreme Court on Friday, February 25th, seeking to ban unconstitutional drop boxes and no-excuse mail-in voting. It will also require the Arizona Secretary of State to include signature verification guidelines in the Arizona Elections Procedures Manual.
Lake’s amicus brief serves to assist the court by providing more insights into how no-excuse absentee voting and absentee drop boxes can be abused by the unscrupulous.
The Arizona Constitution clearly states that voting must take place in person, at the polls, on a fixed date, and this was previously found by the court to be true.
Lake further provides clear evidence that no excuse mail-in voting and drop boxes are unconstitutional, unnecessary, and provide unique opportunities to rig our elections.
The case for this brief was built citing legal precedents and examples of mail-in ballot abuse in other states, including Wisconsin, where hundreds of thousands of illegitimate ‘indefinitely confined’ votes were counted under the guise of COVID.
Banning drop boxes and no excuse mail-in ballots will remove avenues that are used to pressure and intimidate voters, replacing them with confidential in-person voting on election day. It also removes the potential for other forms of fraud or abuse, including overzealous solicitation of absent electors who may prefer not to participate in an election.

Phoenix, Arizona – Kari Lake has just filed an Amicus Brief with the Arizona Supreme Court, urging them to hear the case against the state’s unconstitutional voting system organized by a member of the Arizona Republican Party.
“Voters have made it very clear that they are demanding nothing less than completely secure elections and we’re going to give it to them come hell or high water,” Lake said.
A forensic investigation earlier this year, along with a canvass of absentee voters which uncovered tens of thousands of irregularities with ballots cast in the 2020 general election, has compelled Lake to file her brief this morning. Voters have also been reaching out by the thousands to the campaign asking for help in securing elections in 2022 and beyond, which is why Lake is fighting against the unconstitutional voting practices that have plagued Arizona for years.
The brief was filed around noon on Wednesday March 9th with the Arizona Supreme Court. The original lawsuit was filed on February 25th, 2022 and is awaiting a hearing.

The champagne and caviar days in Davos are over. Or at least the caviar.
The World Economic Forum has put on ice its relationships with Russia, including strategic partnerships with conglomerates run by oligarchs. A Kremlin-backed research center in Moscow and an advisory council led by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic adviser have also been torpedoed.
“We are not engaging with any sanctioned individual and have frozen all relations with Russian entities,” Amanda Russo, a WEF spokesperson, told POLITICO.
Frozen perhaps, but not dead: WEF is leaving open the possibility of serving as a bridge-builder between Russia and Ukraine once active conflict is over.
The 800-pound gorilla of the elite global conference circuit has walked a tightrope for decades when it comes to Russia: basking in the Kremlin’s attention while cringing over oligarch antics.
The Forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab, prides himself on making his annual meeting in Davos open to all comers, including via a personal relationship with Putin dating back to the early 1990s.
Putin and his predecessor as president, Dmitry Medvedev, have addressed WEF five times from 2007 to 2021. Putin was even invited to speak in January 2015, in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, but he turned down the invitation.
Introducing Putin to a virtual Davos gathering in January 2021, Schwab called Putin’s voice “essential” in world affairs, echoing a comment from 2009 that he could not think of a single issue of global importance that could be solved without Russia’s involvement. The pair last met in mid-2021, when Schwab told Putin of the “particular importance” he attaches to Russian representatives taking part in Davos events.
Schwab, via a spokesperson, chose not to directly comment on his relationship with Putin.
But the tides have turned. Not only is sucking up to Putin suddenly déclassé, but WEF is now forced to comply with U.S., EU and Swiss sanctions against Russia, which not only means cutting ties with Russian banks and oil companies — but juggling the sensitivities of the Belgium-based SWIFT international finance transfer system (a WEF six-figure “partner”), from which Russian entities are now banned.
SWIFT did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
The dancing bears
Even before Putin’s presidency, Davos loomed large in the minds of Russian elites. An invitation to WEF was the ultimate stamp of global legitimacy for post-Soviet business leaders — and a chance to throw their weight and euros around.
The star turn of Gennady Zyuganov, the head of Russia’s Communist Party, at the 1996 WEF annual meeting, prompted Russian business leaders including Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Boris Berezovsky to form the “Davos Pact” — a plan to finance the presidential campaign of Boris Yeltsin, then polling in single digits, to prevent Communists returning to power.
Throughout the ‘90s, Russians partied hard in Davos, and the Russian delegation ballooned. By the time Putin and Medvedev began to speak on stage, it was common to find a dozen or more billionaire oligarchs in Davos.

Whether they will be missed is an open question, but the absence of Russians from Europe’s highest altitude town will certainly be noticed.
Oligarch parties in Davos were legendary and notorious.
In 2008, Olympic champion figure skaters performed under fireworks. By 2016, mining magnate Oleg Deripaska was importing costumed Cossack dancers to perform for his guests, as models dressed as flight attendants toured a chalet with massive bowls of black caviar: spoonfed to guests via a spatula, followed with vodka chasers.
Guests at Deripaska’s parties ranged from American CEOs to members of Britain’s House of Lords. Throngs of young women lacking Davos accreditation badges — the universal status system of the town during WEF meetings — mixed among the crowd, claiming to be translators.
By 2018, Deripaska’s partying had drawn the ire of locals, and his parties moved from residential zones and into public venues. He responded by putting on a concert by Enrique Iglesias.
In between the late night parties, the focal point for Russian activities was Russia House — an initiative of the Roscongress Foundation — which took a prominent position on the Davos Promenade.
More than 2,000 participants from 85 countries joined events at the venue in 2020, including billionaire hedge fund manager Ray Dalio and a disgraced former U.N. Assistant Secretary-General, Fabrizio Hochschild.
First Covid, then Kyiv
This has already been a crunch year for WEF, with the pandemic forcing the organization into something of a crisis moment.
WEF has relied on its Strategic Partners, which pay upwards of $640,000 to join the Forum’s most elite partnership tier. That grouping includes a number of Russian banks, which have helped to account for some of the 70 percent of its $340 million budget in 2021. But its inability to collect fees for holding in-person events, such as its annual meeting in Davos, blew a $45 million hole in its budget.
With Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, the Swiss-headquartered Forum will need to eat an even larger check: the Forum’s elimination of links to its Russian stakeholders has been total.
At least six Davos regulars are now subject to personal or organizational sanctions from Western governments.
Herman Gref — chief executive officer of Sberbank, which has been sanctioned by the U.S., U.K. and Canada — is no longer listed as a member of WEF’s board of trustees.
Chrystia Freeland, deputy prime minister of Canada, sits on WEF’s board and led the push to eject Russian banks from SWIFT.
