Four men charged over rape of two teenage girls in Brisbane
Up to 10 men may have been involved in the alleged gang rape of two teenage girls over Christmas in a Brisbane park.
Four men have been charged following the alleged rape of two teenage girls in a Brisbane park. There are concerns 10 men in total could have been involved in the horrific attack.
Police allege the rapes took place in Calamvale, in the city’s south, on 28 December and the teens may have been drugged.
The Courier Mail reported the two 15-year-old girls met up with two of the men at a railway station with the intention to drink and smoke cannabis. They then travelled to Karawatha quarry where another eight men are alleged to have turned up.
Police have alleged the two girls were then repeatedly sexually assaulted at Calamvale District Park.
“Those acts of rape I understand occurred at a park in Calamvale after the two children had asked to be taken home,” Police prosecutor Peri Cardiff told the newspaper.
A 19 year-old, man from Woodbridge, just to the east of Calamvale, and a 20-year-old man from Hillcrest, also close by, were charged yesterday with 40 offences each including rape, indecent treatment of a child under 16, stupefying in order to commit indictable offence, taking child for immoral purposes and assault with intent to commit rape.
Both men appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court today with the 19-year-old remanded in custody until February 1 and the 20-year-old remanded until February 22.
A further two men aged 22 and 21 from Acacia Ridge and Runcorn, in Brisbane’s southern suburbs, have also been charged with 40 offences each and are due to appear in Richlands Magistrates Court on February 1.

You have been calling this a speculative bubble, that GameStop will ultimately crash down to earth, and that the “little guys” are going to get hurt. Jim Cramer wants us to “take your home run” and sell. You use words like “fundamentals” and “valuations” and says that the stock price is not justified.
Here’s the fundamental: I am an ER doctor that trained in inner city Detroit. When I was a resident physician, Obama was president. During his presidency, the quality of life of the predominantly African-Americans in the city did not improve. Despite Obamacare, I saw little improvement in the health outcomes of the patients I worked with. I saw continued proliferation of illicit drugs, overdoses, and gang violence. YOU have left these people behind.
I spent the last several years working in a small town in the Midwest, when Trump was president. During his presidency, the quality of life of the predominantly white Americans also did not improve, and have in fact worsened. I saw continued proliferation of illicit drugs, overdoses, and suicides. These patients I care for are also people whom YOU have left behind.
With the pandemic, I have seen those who are already at the brink of financial solvency lose their jobs and I see lines outside food banks. I see the health outcomes of my patients decline as they forego preventive care. I, on the other hand, kept my job, got a raise, and saw the value of my 401k rise as the economy crashed around me. Going to work every day is a constant and stark reminder of the brokenness and disparity of the economic system and my sheer powerlessness to change it. I realize now that it is not political. It is YOU.
I own GameStop because represents something to me. It is the very embodiment of the millennial generation that you have left behind- a down-and-out aging retailer that you feel is no longer worth investing in. We ARE GameStop. We are not selling because we believe in ourselves and investing in ourselves. We WANT to see it succeed.
I am fully aware that I have benefited from having a 401k and it is what is supporting your industry. But this also means that YOU work for ME. I fully expect you to fuck over my generation to save yourselves by running to the politicians and regulators that you have bought to stop the squeeze and get them to suspend trading on $GME. It is not lost on us that the former Fed chair Ben Bernanke is a senior advisor at Citadel and that you paid Janet Yellen $800,000 in speaking fees. You will tell them that this is a “systemic risk” and that this will “crash the entire financial system”. You will remind them what happened after they let Lehman Brothers fail in 2008. Don’t.
If you are a politician or a regulator reading this, don’t listen to their bullshit. If you intervene, stop trading of $GME, bail out hedge funds and big banks like you have in the past and try to placate us by dragging a few hedge fund managers in front of a congressional hearing, you’ll unite the entire country against YOU. Make sure you are on the right side of this. You work for US too.
This country is broken and fractured. You have goaded us into tearing each other apart for years. This is the first time that I have seen the entire country rally behind a single cause. You have given us a reason to unite- against you and the system you have built and upheld.
I own GameStop not because Diamond Hands. I own GameStop because I AM GameStop. I am choosing to invest in my generation, and selling would be selling myself out.

Fancelli's donation funded most of the event, which cost $500,000 in total to run.
After being initally arranged by Jones, Fancelli tapped Caroline Wren, a top fundraising official on the Trump 2020 campaign, to organize and fund the rally on her behalf.
According to records, Wren and her fundraising consultancy firm were paid $730,000 by the Trump campaign and a joint GOP committee in the 2020 election cycle.

Spotify Wins Patent to Snoop on User’s Voice to Gauge ‘Emotional State’
Music streaming service Spotify has won a patent that will enable it to snoop on users’ speech and “background noise” in order to choose songs that best suit the listener’s “emotional state.”
Yes, really.
“Spotify has received a patent that will allow it to use speech recognition and sound analysis to assess a user’s demographic attributes, determine their emotional state, and even glean insight into their location,” reports RT. “The information will be used – hypothetically, at least – to pick the perfect song to play without requiring any conscious data input from the listener.”
Spotify applied for the patent back in February 2018 but it was quietly approved earlier this month.
In addition to demographic information, the technology will also scan for “intonation, stress, rhythm and the likes of units of speech” to determine the user’s mood. It will also be able to pick up ambient background noise in order to determine whether the user it at a party, using public transport or on a rural walk.
The technology will utilize the user’s emotional response to tweak its algorithm and perform better suited song suggestions in pursuit of a “positive metadata/emotional state.”
Spotify secured another patent back in October called “methods and systems for personalizing user experience based on [user] personality traits,” while also publishing a paper in July that detailed its plans “to link streaming behavior with brain scanning, genetic, and physiological data.”
The use of in-built microphones of cellphones to spy on users is by no means a brand new technology.
Android and Apple users are routinely asked to give permission to apps enabling them to access cellphone mics.

Morocco accused of blackmailing critics with revenge porn
Moroccan authorities have been accused of silencing critics of King Mohammed VI's court, with reports that in some cases the government has resorted to using revenge porn.
According to an article in The Economist, it has been revealed that one such critic Fouad Abdelmoumni claimed that authorities gained recordings of him sleeping with his partner before sending clips to his relatives' phones.
Mr Abdelmoumni said that dozens of dissidents ranging from liberals to Islamists have faced similar smear campaigns. The kingdom has tried and imprisoned three prominent journalists since 2019 for sexual offences including rape. State-affiliated media has, in turn, sought to frame these convictions with the country's own #MeToo movement.
However, independent journalists believe they are being targeted and tried in kangaroo courts. The report states that several women who testified against the journalists later said their statements were falsified and that at least one of them was jailed too.
Some observers have drawn comparisons with the repression under the monarch's late father, King Hassan II, while others have seen similar tactics used under the late long-time Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.
Since the Arab Spring of 2011, King Mohammed implemented some reforms; however, the press, which was once among the region's freest has now increasingly come under pressure from the royal court – Editors have been imprisoned or forced into exile abroad. Morocco's recent controversial decision to establish relations with Israel has also largely gone unquestioned by the media.
Despite a 2016 ruling that abolished prison sentences for journalistic violations, the report suggests that now the government has once again turned to silence independent journalists with criminal offences or allegations unrelated to their work.

How the Hunt Brothers cornered the Silver Market
Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt — oil company executives, investors and brothers — first began purchasing Silver in the early 1970s at a price of less than $2 per ounce. The Hunt brothers’ fervor for Silver accelerated dramatically following the death of their father in 1974, a Texas oil tycoon known as H.L. Hunt. His passing released a $5 billion fortune to members of the Hunt family.
Fueled by an enormous amount of capital, the Hunt brothers continued stockpiling Silver and purchasing Silver futures contracts. By early 1979, the price of Silver had risen to about $6 per ounce. The Hunt brothers acquired roughly 195 million ounces of Silver, about a third of the world’s total supply. They facilitated their Silver purchases in part by investing in futures contracts through several brokers, including Bache Halsey Stuart Shields, Prudential-Bache Securities and Prudential Securities. By December 1979, the market price for Silver fluctuated between $20 and $25 per ounce.
Silver had become exorbitantly expensive even for practical uses. Doctors struggled to afford X-ray film for patients, families melted down their heirloom Silver flatware, Silver burglaries skyrocketed and Tiffany’s & Co. was forced to drastically raise its jewelry prices. Tiffany’s even took out a full page ad in the New York Times criticizing the Hunt brothers, writing, "We think it is unconscionable for anyone to hoard several billion, yes billion, dollars' worth of Silver and thus drive the price up so high that others must pay artificially high prices for articles made of Silver.”
Silver reached a record high of $48.70 per ounce on Jan. 18, 1980. By some estimates, the Hunt brothers’ entire Silver fortune peaked at a value of $10 billion.
THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 1980
Facing out-of-control Silver prices, COMEX (Commodity Exchange, Inc.), a division of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), acted against the Hunt brothers. On Jan. 7, 1980, COMEX introduced Silver Rule 7, which placed heavy restrictions on the purchase of commodities on the margin.
Following its peak price of $48.70 per ounce, Silver began its decline and the Hunt family’s Silver fortune began to shrink.
On March 27, 1980, known as Silver Thursday, the price of Silver dropped 50% in a single day, from $21.62 to $10.80 per ounce. The Hunt brothers failed to meet several margin calls and about $7 billion in paper assets suddenly turned into a $1.7 billion debt.
The sudden price drop threatened to collapse several investment firms and banks. To prevent widespread financial chaos, multiple banks joined together to issue the Hunt brothers a $1.1 billion line of credit.
SILVER MANIPULATION AFTERMATH
Several years of criminal investigations, hearings before Congress and civil cases followed the Hunt brothers’ Silver manipulation scheme.
In August 1988, a federal grand jury ordered Nelson Bunker Hunt, William Herbert Hunt and a third brother, Lamar Hunt, to pay more than $130 million in damages for conspiring to corner the world's Silver market and for ruining the investments of Minpeco, a mineral marketing company of the Peruvian government. By September 1988, both Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt had filed for personal bankruptcy protection to avoid having to post a $225 million bond required for appealing a federal jury verdict against them. In December 1989, the Hunt brothers reached a settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. They were each ordered to pay fines of $10 million and were banned from trading in American commodity markets.
Members of the Hunt family suffered a huge loss of credibility following the Silver manipulation scheme. Nelson Bunker Hunt eventually sold most of his assets. He died in 2014 under relatively modest circumstances. William Herbert Hunt, however, eventually recovered much of his fortune in the oil industry. As of 2019, Forbes estimates his net worth at about $2.6 billion.

The fatal flaw in this was the overuse of Futures contracts as the CFTC just raised the maintenance requirements higher-meaning the Hunts had to pony up the cash to continue to hold those positions.

Stocks sank Friday, closing out the week and month lower after a volatile stretch of trading.
The S&P 500 shed 1.9%, erasing its gains for January and 2021 to date. The index’s weekly loss came out to 3.3%, its worst since October. During Friday’s session, the Dow shed more than 600 points, or about 2%, to close below 30,000 for the first time in six weeks, and the Nasdaq also sank by 2%.
Shares of some of the heavily shorted stocks that had become popular picks among members of Reddit’s r/wallstreetbets forum surged anew after sliding on Thursday. GameStop (GME) shares rocketed higher by about 70% on Friday after nearly halving on Thursday. The stock closed at $65.01 per share a week ago, but by Friday’s close, was higher by more than 400% to $328.24 per share. Shares of AMC (AMC) also soared Friday after plunging on Thursday, as did shares of BlackBerry (BB), Express (EXPR), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) and Nokia (NOK).
Over the course of this week, trading in these and other heavily shorted names generated historic trading volumes in equity markets, surpassing even the volume of trades taking place at the most volatile points of the pandemic in 2020. More than 23.6 billion shares of U.S.-traded stocks were exchanged on Wednesday this week, according to Bloomberg data, marking the most ever in records spanning back more than a decade.

Robinhood was fined $65 million last month for misleading its users about how the company makes money.
Only one month prior to the meteoric rise of GameStop, AMC, and other “meme stocks”, the trading platform Robinhood received a $65 million fine from the SEC after the government agency determined that the trading platform mislead its users from 2015-2018 regarding how the platform makes money.
Per the SEC on December 17, 2020, “between 2015 and late 2018, Robinhood made misleading statements and omissions in customer communications, including in FAQ pages on its website, about its largest revenue source when describing how it made money – namely, payments from trading firms in exchange for Robinhood sending its customer orders to those firms for execution, also known as ‘payment for order flow.'”
In short, this means Robinhood did not give its users the best price for the stock purchases they made, and did not disclose this to the users.
“As the SEC’s order finds, one of Robinhood’s selling points to customers was that trading was ‘commission free,’ but due in large part to its unusually high payment for order flow rates, Robinhood customers’ orders were executed at prices that were inferior to other brokers’ prices,” the SEC explained. “Despite this, according to the SEC’s order, Robinhood falsely claimed in a website FAQ between October 2018 and June 2019 that its execution quality matched or beat that of its competitors.”
Shockingly, the SEC believes that Robinhood “provided inferior trade prices that in aggregate deprived customers of $34.1 million”
CBS News notes that Robinhood has used a series of “game” tactics to attempt to persuade young retail investors to use its platform, essentially treating the stock market like a video game.
One example from the suit: To further coax customers on its platform into trading, Robinhood rewards users “with colorful confetti raining down their screens after executing trades,” according to court documents. These and other tactics are Robinhood’s way of turning serious investing into a “game,” Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin said in a statement. The alleged tactic is “not only unethical, but also falls far short of the standards we require in Massachusetts,” he said.
Robinhood said it disagrees with what Massachusetts alleged and intends to fight state officials in court.

According to a report from Politico, the Biden administration is struggling mightily to deliver on its promise to get a handle on the COVID-19 pandemic, and may have even lost track of as many as 20 million vaccine doses that were sent to the states.
The report notes that Biden officials are learning that a seamless, perfect pandemic response is easier to promise than deliver, and notes that the administration has largely jettisoned its ballyhooed coronavirus response plan as they discover that the challenges they face in getting the pandemic under control may have been more serious than they anticipated.
One administration official was even quoted as saying, "It's the Mike Tyson quote: 'Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.'"
The report also indicates that the Biden administration cannot locate about 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine that have been sent to the states, and is concerned that "the crucial supply is boxed away in warehouses, sitting idle in freezers or floating elsewhere in the complex distribution pipeline that runs from the administration to individual states."
Biden administration officials blamed this problem on the Trump administration, which they claim was not tracking what happened to the vaccines after they were sent to the states.
The report also notes that administration officials have discovered that the available stockpile of vaccine is "mostly empty," and that they are struggling to find ways to boost production in order to even meet the administration's initial goal of 100 million vaccination doses in the first 100 days, which was widely criticized as being too modest and not even an improvement on the rate of vaccine delivery during the final days of the Trump administration.
The shortage of vaccine supply is said to have caught the Biden administration by surprise, and according to the Politico report, the shortage may not be alleviated even by as late as this summer, meaning that the administration's plans to help America return to normal activity may be much more stymied than previously anticipated.
