Gavin Newsom: A Vote for Larry Elder is a Vote Against ‘Diversity’ and ‘Racial Justice’
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) rallied supporters in Long Beach on the final night of campaigning in the California recall election, telling them that a vote for his main opponent, Larry Elder, is a vote against “diversity” and “racial justice.”
Elder, who is African American and was born and raised in Compton, would be the state’s first black governor.
However, Newsom, devoting most of his speech to attacks on Elder — as he has throughout the last month of his campaign — said that Elder’s views on race and gender were out of touch with the left-wing views that California Democrats hold.
The governor has said nothing to criticize racial attacks against Elder in recent weeks — including a violent assault in Venice, where a white woman wearing a gorilla mask pelted Elder and his security detail with eggs. Newsom also remained silent when a Black Lives Matter leader said that Elder was the “black face of white supremacy.”
But Newsom was voluminous in attacking Elder, recycling debunked attack lines he has used in his stump speech, including the false claims that Elder believes climate change is a “myth” (he does not) and that women are not as smart as men. (Elder — writing in 2000 — had cited a University of Pennsylvania study, run by a female researcher, that measured women’s and men’s knowledge of current events (she called her findings “perplexing”).
He also claimed Elder believed that slave owners should be paid reparations for their freed slaves. (Elder, in a discussion of reparations with Candace Owens, mentioned that the United Kingdom had compensated its slave owners when it abolished slavery to avoid conflict over the issue, using that example to make the point that reparations was a complicated topic.)
Both diversity and racial justice were “on the ballot,” Newsom said.
Newsom delivered his closing message ahead of remarks by President Joe Biden, who flew to California to campaign with the Democratic governor, after visiting fire-damaged regions further north in the state.
The final day of voting is Tuesday, Sep. 14.

DENVER (KDVR) — An independent investigation into sexual assault claims against Denver Schools Board Member Tay Anderson is complete and will be made public this week.
The 96-page report, conducted by the Investigative Law Group, has been delivered to the school board’s lawyer and will be given to the board on Monday night.
“The allegations made against Director Anderson were serious and warranted a thorough, independent review to ensure the safety of the DPS community and a fair process for Director Anderson,” the board stated in a press release Monday evening.
Anderson will receive a redacted version of the report on Tuesday. The board’s counsel is redacting the names of students who participated in the investigation.
On Wednesday, the report and a statement from the board will be released to the public on the board’s website.
Allegations against Anderson first surfaced in March, when a local organization claimed multiple women had sexual assault claims against him. More allegations came out in May, when someone alleged Denver students had made sexual assault claims against him.

The White House has begun planning for boosters later this month, if both the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agree. Advisers to the FDA will weigh evidence about an extra Pfizer shot Friday. The U.S. already offers an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to people with severely weakened immune systems.
Polis credited the Donald Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed for dispensing with bureaucracy to quickly incentivize vaccine development. He said it’s time the Joe Biden administration did the same for booster shots and young children’s vaccines as the nation’s schools have reopened with the delta variant raging.
“This is a moment where similar leadership is needed by the Biden administration to make sure that the FDA does not succeed in using ivory tower circular reasoning to further delay the life-saving booster,” Polis said.
Polis said Monday that Colorado is ready to formally launch a booster-shot program as soon as Sept. 20, beginning with residents and staff of senior residential facilities and frontline workers, pending FDA and CDC approval. Some Colorado residents with weakened immune systems have already gotten the booster shot.
As for COVID-19 vaccines for children, those 12 and over are eligible. But with schools reopening and the delta variant causing more infections among kids, many parents are anxiously wondering when younger children can get the shots.
The FDA’s vaccine chief, Dr. Peter Marks, told The Associated Press Friday the agency will rapidly evaluate COVID-19 vaccinations for younger children as soon as it gets the needed data. Pfizer is expected to turn over its study results by the end of September.Marks said he was “very, very hopeful” that vaccinations for 5- to 11-year-olds will be underway by year’s end.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has cited delta’s growing threat to children in urging a faster decision.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Cal Fire said that they have arrested 44 people suspected of arson in the first four months of 2021.
In a tweet Thursday, Cal Fire said that the number of arson arrests averages out to one arrest every three days.
According to a graphic, the arrests are already over a third of the total arrests for arson by Cal Fire law enforcement officers in 2020 and more than half of the total arrests the four years before that.

The California wildfires that led to ex-professor’s arson arrest
The warrant affidavit (embedded below) that was filed Aug. 8 concerning Gary Stephen Maynard, 47, mentions five fires believed to be arson, in July and August. He has been formally accused of setting just one, on Aug. 7, but his proximity to the earliest of them prompted tracking of his movements.
In addition to the approximate locations of the five fires, the map above indicates by blue dots places where the complaint says Maynard was known to be over the course of two weeks.
The first two fires, Cascade (1) and Everitt (2), began on July 20 and 21 on the southern flank of Mount Shasta. At that time, the lightning-sparked Lava Fire, which caused extensive evacuations near the city of Weed, had been burning for almost a month on the other side of the mountain.
The Cascade Fire was reported by mountain bikers who attempted to keep the flames contained for 45 minutes until firefighters arrived.

Mission planning 30-years ago consisted of paper maps and cardstock lineup cards. Flying was far less automated and correcting for dive angle and airspeed was a must. Direct hits were annotated with a grease pencil on the inside of the canopy and battle damage assessments were written on the walls of the debrief room upon return. There is a theoretical expectation that some types of vaccines could prompt the evolution of more virulent (“hotter”) pathogens. This idea follows from the notion that natural selection removes pathogen strains that are so “hot” that they kill their hosts and, therefore, themselves. Vaccines that let the hosts survive but do not prevent the spread of the pathogen relax this selection, allowing the evolution of hotter pathogens to occur. This type of vaccine is often called a leaky vaccine. When vaccines prevent transmission, as is the case for nearly all vaccines used in humans, this type of evolution towards increased virulence is blocked. But when vaccines leak, allowing at least some pathogen transmission, they could create the ecological conditions that would allow hot strains to emerge and persist. This theory proved highly controversial when it was first proposed over a decade ago, but here we report experiments with Marek’s disease virus in poultry that show that modern commercial leaky vaccines can have precisely this effect: they allow the onward transmission of strains otherwise too lethal to persist. Thus, the use of leaky vaccines can facilitate the evolution of pathogen strains that put unvaccinated hosts at greater risk of severe disease. The future challenge is to identify whether there are other types of vaccines used in animals and humans that might also generate these evolutionary risks.

'This is an excellent example of the work our officers do every day,' said Operational Services Bureau Deputy Chief Jason Bell. 'We are proud of these officers for their vigilance.'
