Thousands of Marines Tested for LSD After Drug Problem Emerges at Infantry Unit

The North Carolina-based 2nd Marine Division has a drug problem.

That's how Maj. Gen. Francis Donovan put it in an unusually blunt Marine Corps news release issued by the service this week. The division has changed up the way it screens for drugs after catching several Marines using lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD.

"We are committed to identifying violators of our ethos," Donovan said in a statement. "The vast majority of Marines within the 2d Marine Division routinely uphold our core values, and they deserve to know that the Marines to their left and right are doing the same."

The division has tested about a quarter of its 16,000 Marines and sailors for LSD since the summer. Previous routine drug screenings did not test that particular drug, but that changed after Marines and sailors were found to be using LSD.

"The number of positive test results is exceedingly small – fewer than a half a percent of those tested," 1st Lt. Dan Linfante, a 2nd Marine Division spokesman, said. "The same trend exists for other drugs as well, with over 55,000 tests administered over the past year."

Half a percent of 4,000 would be about 20 Marines. Still, Linfante added, the Marine Corps has a zero-tolerance policy regarding drugs, so even one positive test is too many.

Anyone who tests positive, he said, will be fully held accountable for their actions under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

"The use of prohibited substances is unfortunately not new," he said. "What's new here is that the 2d Marine Division is now testing specifically for LSD, along with the many other substances we've long tested for – both randomly and in every other way possible."

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service warned this summer about a big spike in LSD use across the Navy Department. Federal agents asked for help tracking down perpetrators, which they said was prevalent on the dark web – a hard-to-regulate section of the internet.

In the first four months of 2020, NCIS saw a 70% increase in investigations relating to alleged LSD offenses, Military.com previously reported.

This is not the first time the 2nd Marine Division has made headlines for bad behavior.

WHO Calls for ‘Global Solidarity’ on World AIDS Day to Beat HIV, COVID-19 Outbreaks

Although Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was first detected more than 40 years ago, the illness continues to infect and kill millions of people around the globe. Its persistence serves as a grim reminder that epidemic illnesses aren’t defeated overnight or without concerted effort.

Health organizations around the globe commemorated World AIDS Day on Tuesday, and commentators called attention to the parallels between the darkest days of that epidemic and the present COVID-19 pandemic. They noted that while the COVID-19 pandemic might have delayed the world’s 2020 AIDS-fighting goals by as many as 10 years, the fight against COVID-19 hasn’t suffered the same challenges of awareness and funding as AIDS has.

2020 Goals Delayed By A Decade

The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that worldwide in 2019, there were 38 million people with HIV, but one-fifth did not know their status. That year, 1.7 million new cases were reported, and 690,000 people died from complications of the illness.

However, the UN-affiliated health agency warns, the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic have placed greater strains on health systems in the developing world, including dominating the concerns of health workers and interfering with supply chains.

“Now is the time for us to once again make a leap in our response to work together to end COVID-19 and get back on track to end HIV by 2030,” the agency wrote. “On World AIDS Day 2020, WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens to rally for ‘global solidarity’ to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19 on the HIV response.”

Those goals are known as “90-90-90” - 90% of people with HIV know their status, 90% of people with HIV are receiving treatment, and 90% of people receiving treatment are achieving viral suppression using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drugs like Truvada, which is made by Gilead Sciences.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) echoed the WHO’s call, warning that “we cannot underestimate the impact of disruptions related to COVID-19 on healthcare system delivery and services particularly in resource-limited settings,” such as sub-Saharan Africa.

“As programs adapted to COVID-19, HIV treatment was prioritized. Now, we must plan for the rapid recovery and resumption of HIV testing and prevention services – in a responsible and safe way given the current landscape and building from what we have learned during this pandemic,” the CDC said in a Monday statement. Testing and treatment programs in the region are heavily funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a 2005 initiative begun by then-US President George W. Bush.

Chinese Company That Bought Australian Island Reportedly Squeezing Residents Out

China Bloom, a Chinese developer company, bought a 99-year lease on a portion of Keswick Island, in central east Queensland, in 2019, according to The Daily Mail. Since that time, reports have emerged that locals have been disappointed with the new management of the island and are concerned about its ecological future.

A Chinese developer has been preventing residents of Australia's Keswick island from setting foot on their home turf after the firm purchased a lease to the land, according to multiple media reports.

Locals are reportedly banned from renting their properties or promoting them on Airbnb, as their access to the beaches has been limited as well. According to reports, families say that the new Chinese owner is killing tourism on the island, restricting boats from approaching the island and aircraft from entering its airspace in what is seen as an attempt to make the island an exclusive tourist spot for visitors from Beijing only.

"I just don't think they want Australians on the island," former resident Julie Willis told Australian news program A Current Affair. "I think that they want to have this island solely for the use of the Chinese tourism market."

Willis revealed that she and her partner Robert Lee were told to vacate their property on the island that they have been renting for six years - with China Bloom claiming that they would now have to pay 100,000 AUD ($70,000) as a deposit if they wanted to purchase the property.

"I think they're trying to deter us from buying the property. They don't want us here", Willis observed.

Rayna Asbury, a landlord on the island, told 'A Current Affair' that no tourists have visited the island since September 2019. According to the report, access restriction was extended to the waters of Basil Bay beach and even a national park that covers 80 percent of the island's 550 hectares.

According to reports, China Bloom is excavating on the island, potentially damaging the environment. The Daily Mail noted in its report that Australian agents of China Bloom, Greaton Holdings, is behind several massive construction projects across the country, particularly hotels and residential buildings in Sydney's Darling Harbour, McLaren Vale, Adelaide and Sydney.

The Department of Resources said in a statement, cited by A Current Affair, that its responsibility "is to work with both the head lessee China Bloom and sublessees to ensure all relevant activities are in accordance with the terms of the lease, particularly as China Bloom works to upgrade the island's roads, boat ramps, jetties and marine infrastructure".

Since September, locals have become concerned about the ecological future of the island, arguing that the excavation of the shoreline and restriction of access to the national park raises concerns regarding the Chinese company's environmental footprint.

Asbury, cited by ABC News AU, said she was particularly shocked to discover that Basil Bay, a known turtle nesting location, had been widely excavated.

A Department of Environment and Science spokesperson, however, cited by A Current Affair, claimed that their Department found no evidence of a permanent negative environmental impact to the habitat.

"Officers from the Department of Environment and Science investigated beach areas where island management had conducted works and did not observe any evidence of turtle nests or permanent impact to habitat", the statement reportedly said.

According to reports, the lease to Keswick island territories was purchased by China Bloom in 2019. There have been no official statements released by the Chinese company.

Needless to say, my delight continued when I learned that James O’Keefe of Project Veritas fame — infamy if you happen to be one of O’Keefe’s targets —called into CNN’s morning conference call on Tuesday, which was being led by CNN President Jeff Zucker, and told the embattled Zucker he’d been listening to their morning conference calls for two months and that he’s going to release them tonight. [Cue: pin-drop.]

“Do you still feel you’re the most trusted name in news, because I have to say from what I’ve been hearing on these phone calls, I don’t know about that; we have a lot of recordings that indicate you’re not really that independent as a journalist.”

After a pregnant pause, an obviously startled Zucker said, “Um, thank you for your calls,” as he tried to return to some semblance of control of the call. Then came the following.

“So everybody, I think in light of that we’ll set up a new system and we’ll be back with you. We’ll do the rest of the call later.”

The call was cut off as O’Keefe began to ask another question.

Can you imagine what Zucker did as soon as he abruptly ended the conference call, frantically and angrily trying to get to the bottom of “How in the hell was that bastard O’Keefe able to record our f**king conference calls? For two fking months!!!”

Not to mention everyone else on the call, panic-stricken as they tried to remember what they’ve said on what they believed were secure calls.

Ah to be the proverbial fly on the CNN wall for that meltdown.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Disputing President Donald Trump’s persistent, baseless claims, Attorney General William Barr declared Tuesday the U.S. Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election.

Barr’s comments, in an interview with the The Associated Press, contradict the concerted effort by Trump, his boss, to subvert the results of last month’s voting and block President-elect Joe Biden from taking his place in the White House.

Barr told the AP that U.S. attorneys and FBI agents have been working to follow up specific complaints and information they’ve received, but “to date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.”

The comments, which drew immediate criticism from Trump attorneys, were especially notable coming from Barr, who has been one of the president’s most ardent allies. Before the election, he had repeatedly raised the notion that mail-in voting could be especially vulnerable to fraud during the coronavirus pandemic as Americans feared going to polls and instead chose to vote by mail.

More to Trump’s liking, Barr revealed in the AP interview that in October he had appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham as a special counsel, giving the prosecutor the authority to continue to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe after Biden takes over and making it difficult to fire him. Biden hasn’t said what he might do with the investigation, and his transition team didn’t comment Tuesday.

Trump has long railed against the investigation into whether his 2016 campaign was coordinating with Russia, but he and Republican allies had hoped the results would be delivered before the 2020 election and would help sway voters. So far, there has been only one criminal case, a guilty plea from a former FBI lawyer to a single false statement charge.

r federal regulations, a special counsel can be fired only by the attorney general and for specific reasons such as misconduct, dereliction of duty or conflict of interest. An attorney general must document such reasons in writing.

Barr went to the White House Tuesday for a previously scheduled meeting that lasted about three hours.

Trump didn’t directly comment on the attorney general’s remarks on the election. But his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and his political campaign issued a scathing statement claiming that, “with all due respect to the Attorney General, there hasn’t been any semblance” of an investigation into the president’s complaints.

Other administration officials who have come out forcefully against Trump’s allegations of voter-fraud evidence have been fired. But it’s not clear whether Barr might suffer the same fate. He maintains a lofty position with Trump, and despite their differences the two see eye-to-eye on quite a lot.

Still, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer quipped: “I guess he’s the next one to be fired.”

Last month, Barr issued a directive to U.S. attorneys across the country allowing them to pursue any “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities before the 2020 presidential election was certified, despite no evidence at that time of widespread fraud.

That memorandum gave prosecutors the ability to go around longstanding Justice Department policy that normally would prohibit such overt actions before the election was certified. Soon after it was issued, the department’s top elections crime official announced he would step aside from that position because of the memo.

The Trump campaign team led by Giuliani has been alleging a widespread conspiracy by Democrats to dump millions of illegal votes into the system with no evidence. They have filed multiple lawsuits in battleground states alleging that partisan poll watchers didn’t have a clear enough view at polling sites in some locations and therefore something illegal must have happened. The claims have been repeatedly dismissed including by Republican judges who have ruled the suits lacked evidence.

But local Republicans in some battleground states have followed Trump in making unsupported claims, prompting grave concerns over potential damage to American democracy.

Trump himself continues to rail against the election in tweets and in interviews though his own administration has said the 2020 election was the most secure ever. He recently allowed his administration to begin the transition over to Biden, but he still refuses to admit he lost.

The issues they’ve have pointed to are typical in every election: Problems with signatures, secrecy envelopes and postal marks on mail-in ballots, as well as the potential for a small number of ballots miscast or lost.

But they’ve gone further. Attorney Sidney Powell has spun fictional tales of election systems flipping votes, German servers storing U.S. voting information and election software created in Venezuela “at the direction of Hugo Chavez,” – the late Venezuelan president who died in 2013. Powell has since been removed from the legal team after an interview she gave where she threatened to “blow up” Georgia with a “biblical” court filing.

Barr didn’t name Powell specifically but said: “There’s been one assertion that would be systemic fraud and that would be the claim that machines were programmed essentially to skew the election results. And the DHS and DOJ have looked into that, and so far, we haven’t seen anything to substantiate that.”

In the campaign statement, Giuliani claimed there was “ample evidence of illegal voting in at least six states, which they have not examined.”

“We have many witnesses swearing under oath they saw crimes being committed in connection with voter fraud. As far as we know, not a single one has been interviewed by the DOJ. The Justice Department also hasn’t audited any voting machines or used their subpoena powers to determine the truth,” he said.

However, Barr said earlier that people were confusing the use of the federal criminal justice system with allegations that should be made in civil lawsuits. He said a remedy for many complaints would be a top-down audit by state or local officials, not the U.S. Justice Department.

“There’s a growing tendency to use the criminal justice system as sort of a default fix-all,” he said, but first there must be a basis to believe there is a crime to investigate.

“Most claims of fraud are very particularized to a particular set of circumstances or actors or conduct. … And those have been run down; they are being run down,” Barr said. “Some have been broad and potentially cover a few thousand votes. They have been followed up on.”

Facebook Says It Will Provide The "Authoritative Information" On COVID Vaccines

No sooner did we just get finishing penning a piece about how the British Army is being used to fight "anti-vaccine" protests and vaccine "disinformation" - including by "work[ing] closely with social media companies" - than Mark Zuckerberg has also thrown his hat into the fray.

The Facebook CEO has said he wants to provide platform users with "authoritative information about Covid-19 vaccines," according to CNBC. The company has "already reached out to the Biden administration," Zuckerberg has said. We don't know about you, but we already feel safer and more informed…

Meanwhile, "authoritative" is a great word choice.

On a livestream with Dr. Anthony Fauci this week, Zuckerberg said: “There’ll be a few important things that we can do together. We’re already planning a push around authoritative information about the vaccines.”

He did not clarify on how he planned on distributing the information, but if it's anything like how Facebook informed its users on how to vote, it will be a non-stop bludgeoning of banners, alerts and messages that will completely override what little true "user experience" is left on Facebook, between the ads.

Recall, we also wrote hours ago that the British Army's Information Warfare Unit is being deployed to deal with "anti-vaccine propaganda" heading into the rollout of the vaccine overseas. Some in the country have said they will refuse the vaccine and will do the same for the children. Others have called it a "mass sterilization program". Other Brits simply "feel the Government is wielding too much power," the Daily Mail noted.

The U.K. is also launching a probe into "vaccine disinformation", including an investigation into (of course) Russia.

A U.K. Cabinet Office spokesman said late last week: "As we edge closer to a vaccine we continue to work closely with social media companies and other organizations to anticipate and mitigate any emerging anti-vax narratives and promote authoritative sources of information."

We're sure the Biden administration will do the same and anoint Facebook as its official Covid press secretary.
