Britain’s markets watchdog intervened hours before the country leave’s the European Union’s single market on Thursday with a partial climbdown on curbs that risked disrupting swaps trades worth billions of euros.

The City of London’s unfettered access to the European Union, its biggest customer, ends when Brexit transition arrangements expire at 2300 GMT, and without the change of heart UK and EU market participants would have been unable to trade swaps with each other when markets reopen on Jan. 4. Branches of EU banks in London would have been particularly hit as the trade deal agreed by the EU and Britain last week does not cover financial market access. Faced with the EU’s refusal to lift its own ban on trading swaps on platforms in London, Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said it would temporarily allow UK financial firms to use venues in the bloc if they do not have arrangements in place to execute the trade elsewhere, such as in the United States. Industry officials say that some EU clients, such as smaller asset managers, would not be able to switch to a platform in New York. Sterling extended gains versus the euro after news of the three-month grace period.
It means that more swaps trading is likely to leave London for EU-based platforms such as Tradeweb from Monday. The move comes after the Bank of England warned that interest rate swaps worth around $200 billion could be disrupted due to the clash between UK and EU swaps rules, known as the derivatives trading obligation or DTO. Britain took a more accommodative approach to euro denominated share trading by allowing British banks to use EU platforms from Monday, an acknowledgment that liquidity is set to leave London for the bloc. The more restricted easing in derivatives on Thursday is a sign that Britain wants London to maintain its global dominance in swaps trading as far as it can.
Britain is hoping that the trade deal agreed last week will put Brussels in a better mood to grant equivalence in coming weeks to avoid the clash over derivatives trading re-emerging.

A deposition by Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Sy Hersh has been released in which he confirms the FBI had information former DNC staffer Seth Rich was communicating with Wikileaks and requesting payment.
Meanwhile, I’ve been authorized to release the transcript of a July 15, 2020 deposition of Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Sy Hersh, wherein Mr. Hersh is forced to admit that he did speak with a senior intelligence official about an FBI report about Mr. Rich and Wikileaks. As my regular readers know, Mr. Rich was murdered in Washington, D.C. on July 10, 2016, and shortly thereafter Wikileaks published thousands of DNC emails that were very embarrassing to then-Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. On August 9, 2016, Mr. Assange intimated that the DNC emails were obtained from Mr. Rich, not Russian hackers.
If you doubt my source, recall that three weeks ago — after three years of denials — the FBI was finally forced to admit that it had thousands of records about Mr. Rich, as well as his laptop. Meanwhile, virtually no one in official Washington has lifted a finger to help.

Russia is using its vaccine program for soft power diplomacy. On Tuesday, Argentina and Belarus became the first two countries to begin coronavirus vaccinations via the Sputnik V vaccine.
Building on the Sputnik V vaccine's momentum, Russia is now claiming it has successfully developed the world's first "antidote" to COVID-19.
According to RT News, Russia's Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) announced this week that an experimental drug to combat the virus is the world's first direct-acting antiviral antidote if clinical trials are successful.
FMBA head Veronika Skvortsova has claimed that the experimental antidote is more than 99% effective.
"This is the first etiotropic drug that directly affects the virus. In fact, this is an antidote for coronavirus infection," she told Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Wednesday, adding that researchers have concluded preclinical studies that already shown the remedy is "completely safe" and "highly efficient."
Skvortsova told Mishustin that the FMBA is applying for approval to conduct additional testing in the near term.
"If clinical trials confirm the effectiveness of this drug, it will be the first safe, effective, direct-acting antiviral drug that has no analogs in the world," she explained.
The Russian Ministry of Health approved the anti-influenza drug Avifavir for reducing patient recovery times back in May.
If effective, the antidote combined with the Sputnik V vaccine could push Russia ahead in the vaccine race among global superpowers.
Meanwhile, Pfizer published a statement that said there is "no data" to show that a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine will protect from infection after 21 days, according to Axios.
Russia has accused the West of misrepresenting the science behind its Sputnik V vaccine to win market share for its vaccines.

Mask-wearing is ineffective and potentially harmful to health.
Masks are porous. They have to be. Otherwise wearers would suffocate.
Aerosol spores are minuscule. Able to penetrate all masks and concentrate beneath them risks greater harm to wearers than avoiding their use.
Everything ordered or recommended this year for protection did infinitely more harm than good - notably from lost jobs and income during lockdowns and quarantines.

“The percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza at clinical laboratories is” one-10th of 1%.
It’s practically nonexistent.
For the three-month period in the US ending in late December, findings were virtually the same.
There’s almost no seasonal influenza showing up this year because their outbreaks are called covid.
Overall worldwide, seasonal influenza is around 98% lower this year than in earlier flu seasons.
WHO spokesperson Dr. Sylvie Briand recently claimed that “literally there was nearly no flu in the Southern Hemisphere” in 2020, adding:
“We hope that the situation will be the same in the Northern Hemisphere” at end of this flu season.
If the current trend continues as is highly likely, the incidence of seasonal influenza will be minuscule compared to previous years in northern and southern hemispheres. At the same time in the US nationwide and worldwide, high numbers of covid are reported.
If accurately identified, they’d be called influenza that shows up annually in the US and abroad like clockwork.

Claiming “lockdowns stopped flu in its tracks, (outbreaks) plummet(ting) by 98% in the United States” ignored that what’s called covid is seasonal influenza.
The great 2020 disappearing flu passes largely under the mass media’s radar.
Media proliferated mass deception and power of repetition get most people to believe that what’s harmful to health and well-being is beneficial.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Supervisor Janice Hahn Wednesday announced that she wrote Gov. Gavin Newsom a letter requesting that he work to bring Army National Guard medical personnel and the U.S.N.S. Mercy hospital ship to Los Angeles County amid a surge in COVID-19 patients.
Hahn declared her support for the Southern California Public Service Workers union's request for additional healthcare workers to be sent to all hospitals in the county to help them handle the surge.
Hospitals specifically need registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses and respiratory care practitioners with the Army National Guard, according to Hahn.
"Our SEIU healthcare workers are exhausted and our hospitals are overwhelmed. They need backup," Hahn said in the letter sent Tuesday. "This surge is the crisis that we dreaded all along. We need as much support as we can get for our healthcare workers, and we need the U.S.N.S. Mercy back in the Port of Los Angeles."
According to Hahn's office, Los Angeles County hospitals may have to ration care if COVID-19 hospitalizations keep rising and surpass the capability of staff and resources.
The 1,000-bed U.S.N.S. Mercy arrived at the Port of Los Angeles on March 27 to provide relief for Southland hospitals that were preparing for an anticipated surge of coronavirus patients in April. The ship was not brought in to treat COVID-19 cases, but to handle other patients and free up hospital beds for virus treatment.
It departed on May 15 for its home port in San Diego.
"I also ask that you call on our federal partners to bring back the U.S.N.S. Mercy with accompanying medical staff to the Port of Los Angeles," Hahn said in her letter.
"Our public health experts warn that the worst is yet to come with the anticipated incoming Christmas and New Year's holiday surge, so I urge you to act now and equip our hospitals with additional healthcare workers and resources to save as many lives as possible."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 196.92 points, or 0.65%, to 30,606.48, the S&P 500 gained 24.03 points, or 0.64%, to 3,756.07 and the Nasdaq Composite added 18.28 points, or 0.14%, to 12,888.28. The Nasdaq Composite registered its best annual gain since 2009, up 43.6%, FactSet data show. Global stocks added around $15 trillion in market cap in 2020 (pushing above $100 trillion for the first time ever). The US Dollar's 6% drop in 2020 is the worst year since 2017 (but this misses the fact that the world's reserve currency has collapsed by 14% from its spike highs in March)-cap #4
Dollar's collapse helped spark gold's best year since 2010 (and new record highs above $2000 in the year) And Bitcoin screamed higher (up around 300% on the year - its best since 2017), but Ethereum was 2020's biggest winner, up over 470%... For the year, the S&P 500 gained about 16%, the Dow roughly 7% and the Nasdaq more than 43%, which marked the biggest yearly gain for the tech-heavy index since 2009. Eastern Caribbean Issues Rare Volcano Alert

Rarely do we hear about volcanoes in the eastern Caribbean, but this week, rumblings from down under prompted officials to issue volcanic alerts in Martinique and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
On Tuesday, warnings were issued for La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines after tremors, powerful gas emissions and a new volcanic dome were observed.
The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) said that scientists observed an "effusive eruption within the crater, with visible gas and steam."
CDEMA issued an "Orange" alert for the surrounding area around the La Soufriere volcano due to the threat of increased volcanic activity.
"Monitoring systems, satellite imagery and visual observations have confirmed increased seismic and fumarolic activity, strong gas emissions, emergence of a satellite dome on the SE of the existing volcanic dome and changes to the crater lake.
"An effusive eruption within the crater, with visible gas and steam, was also observed on 29th December 2020," CDEMA wrote in an update.

NYSE to Delist Chinese Telco Giants on U.S. Executive Order
The New York Stock Exchange said it will delist three Chinese companies to comply with a U.S. executive order that imposed restrictions on companies that were identified as affiliated with the Chinese military.
China Mobile Ltd., China Telecom Corp Ltd., China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd will be delisted between Jan. 7 and Jan. 11, according to a statement by the exchange.
