China Rejects U.S. Calls To Release Hong Kong Fugitives

The Chinese Communist Party has rejected U.S. calls for the immediate release of 12 Hong Kong fugitives.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Consulate in the southern city of Guangzhou made that demand in a statement, saying “China will stop at nothing to prevent its people from seeking freedom elsewhere.” The spokesperson added that the “only so-called crime was to flee tyranny.”
The trial for ten out of the 12 pro-democracy activists began on Monday. The fugitives were accused of attempting to flee from the Chinese territory to Taiwan back in August. Two are facing additional charges for allegedly organizing the escape.
Later on Monday, Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rejected the U.S.’s demands. Lijian insisted that America should stop interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
“The U.S. side’s remarks disregard the fact and confuse right and wrong,” Lijian stated. “China firmly opposes these remarks. China is a country under the rule of law where the laws must be followed and violations must be punished.”
He went on to insist the Chinese judicial body is handling the case in accordance to the law. However, supporters of the defendants are questioning these claims, accusing the government of holding a secret trial.
“The unfair court proceeding is evidence of an obvious, draconian political persecution,” pro-democracy activist Owen Chow said. “They have denied the access of families, lawyers, journalists and diplomats to attend the trial on the grounds that the auditorium was full, which renders the trial a de facto secret trial.”
Relatives explained the trial has ended and the verdict will be handed down at a later date. Authorities said they face up to a year in prison for illegal border crossing and up to seven years if convicted of organizing the trip.
The two other defendants, both minors, will face a separate hearing.

TRANSITION FACTS

President Trump took decisive action last month to protect American investors and pension holders from funding Communist Chinese military companies (CCMCs) through Executive Order (13959) Addressing the Threat from Securities Investments that Finance Communist Chinese Military Companies. The Trump Administration is coordinating closely to counter the threat these companies present to the economy and national security of the United States.
Today, the Treasury Department noted that Executive Order 13959 prohibits the ownership of any CCMC shares by exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and index funds, as well as any of their 50 percent or greater majority-owned subsidiaries that have been publicly listed by the Treasury or Defense Departments. This ensures U.S. capital does not contribute to the development and modernization of the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) military, intelligence, and security services.
The Executive Order applies to all transactions by U.S. persons, including individuals, institutional investors, pension funds, university endowments, banks, bond issuers, venture capital firms, private equity firms, index firms, and other U.S. entities, including those operating overseas. This should allay concerns that U.S. investors might unknowingly support CCMCs via direct, indirect, or other passive investments including those linked to educational, ETFs, venture funds, private equity, Real Estate Investment Trusts, commodities, endowments, pensions, or any other investment funds tracking bonds, loans, lease lines, debt or equity indices that include securities of CCMCs or subsidiaries publicly listed by the U.S. government.
Beginning on January 11, 2021, U.S. investors will no longer be able to transact in publicly traded or private market debt or equity securities, or any securities that are derivative thereof, regardless of the percentage ownership of CCMCs, with full divestment required by November 11, 2021.

Good afternoon, frens.
Not much to report concerning visible traffic, will drop a few caps here to just exemplify the very little I'm seeing.
Military traffic is mostly not visible. 1st cap is San Diego - odd that you never see ANY mil traffic, but that's what is on scope r/n.
Flashpoint areas are a mixed bag. 2nd and 3rd caps show the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, respectively. Nothing particularly unusual about the traffic, except that the middle of the Taiwan Strait seems to be a little more empty than normal. Traffic seems to be more interested in staying a little closer to the coast.
Same thing seems to be the case with the South China Sea. Traffic seems to be a little bit more motivated than normal to stay away from the Paracels and Spratlys. Scarborough Shoals in the northeast circle is also sorta true - there is shoal water there, though, so a lot of vessels steer clear just on general principles.
Last part of the report - yachts of the bitch and shameless.
As previously reported a week or so (I think) ago, most of the yachts have moved to warmer climes. Remember, many of these are "rented out" working assets, it just costs upwards of $5 mil a week to ride on the larger megayachts.
One of the more prime destinations is, of course, the Carribean, and it's in the Leeward Islands where they mostly seem to be concentrated. Took a long sweep through, checking vessel names (lots and lots and lots of damn names) and some of the bigger players popped up…
4th cap shows ULYSSES, owned by Graeme Hart, off the W coast of Guadaloupe. What about a mile or so due N of her, by the way, is Sheldon Adelson's QUEEN MIRI.
Some more examples: a little farther north, at anchor just off Gustavia, is ECLIPSE, owned by Roman Abramovich. And hanging out off the coast of St. Johns in the BVI, the RISING SUN, owned and occupied by that rat bastard David Geffen.
No sightings of ChiCom ships sneaking around off the coast or anything else that would be of interest for now. We'll keep looking. Who knows, maybe we'll find the needle in the haystack.
Hope my buddy is around who has a better handle on suspect merchants than I do, maybe he has more to share. He's got a better track list than me by a lot, a credit to how long he's been doing this.

Fed extends Main Street loan program as last-minute applications surge
The Federal Reserve on Tuesday said it had extended the end date for its Main Street Lending Program by eight days to process a rush of applications submitted since the Trump administration said it was terminating the emergency credit facility and several others set up by the U.S. central bank. The program, targeted at small- and mid-sized businesses in need of credit to get through the recession triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, will remain open until Jan. 8 rather than closing on Dec. 31, as originally announced by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in November, the Fed said in a statement.
The extension, which the Fed said was approved by Mnuchin, will give the central bank the time needed to process and fund loans submitted to the lender portal on or before Dec. 14.
The program proved one of the most challenging for the Fed to get rolling among the clutch of emergency programs it set up to support the economy and credit markets earlier this year. It established the Fed as a creditor to everyday businesses as opposed to its traditional role as a backstop to financial markets and lender of last resort to banks and Wall Street firms.
In a bid to boost participation that was nearly non-existent in its early months, the Fed tweaked the program several times, dropping the minimum loan size to $100,000 and opening the door to nonprofit groups. The program - initially announced as a $600 billion facility - generated just $5 billion in loans in its first five months. But since its termination was announced by Mnuchin, volumes have surged, Fed data showed. As of Dec. 23, there were $14.59 billion in loans in the facility, nearly three times the amount from four weeks earlier.
The rise in demand coincided with a slowdown in the economy after an initial rebound from late spring through the summer. A surge in coronavirus cases across the country is once again weighing on consumer spending and forcing renewed business closures. A number of economists are now forecasting employment to have fallen in December after seven months of gains that had recouped a bit more than half of the roughly 22 million jobs lost in March and April.
Mnuchin’s decision to shutter the Fed’s programs has been assailed by Democrats, who see it as hindering the ability of President-elect Joe Biden to support the economic recovery. Mnuchin asserts he is following the letter of the law that authorized the programs last spring.

Trump attacks ‘weak and tired’ GOP leaders for allowing override of his defense bill veto
Monday, the House of Representatives voted to override Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by a 322-87 margin, setting the stage for a vote in the Senate on Tuesday. If the Senate follows in the footsteps of the House, it would be the first time that Congress has ever overridden one of Trump’s vetoes during his four years in Washington.
“Weak and tired Republican ‘leadership’ will allow the bad Defense Bill to pass,” the president tweeted Tuesday morning. “Say goodbye to VITAL Section 230 termination, your National Monuments, Forts (names!) and Treasures (inserted by Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren), 5G, and our great soldiers […] being removed and brought home from foreign lands who do NOTHING for us.”
“A disgraceful act of cowardice and total submission by weak people to Big Tech,” he added. “Negotiate a better Bill, or get better leaders, NOW! Senate should not approve NDAA until fixed!!!”
Last week, Trump vetoed the NDAA, opposing provisions that would slow down his planned pullback of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and mandate that military bases named after Confederates be renamed. The latter legislation was introduced by a frequent target of the president’s ridicule, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), whom he has repeatedly called “Pocahontas.”
On top of that, Trump also demanded that the annual spending bill should include a repeal of Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which provides social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter liability protections.
The Hill reports that the Senate is likely to vote on the action sometime later this week.
For Congress to override Trump’s veto, two-thirds of members in both the House and Senate need to vote in favor of overriding. The House passed the NDAA by a 335-87 margin and then the Senate approved it 84-13, with both being veto-proof margins.
However, it is uncertain how many Republican senators who had initially supported the NDAA will vote this week to overturn the outgoing president’s veto or fall in line with the commander-in-chief.

Russia Pushes Ahead On Gas Link to Europe Before U.S. Sanctions
Russia is stepping up work on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline before the U.S. tightens sanctions against the controversial project designed to feed more natural gas into Germany.
Construction of the 1,230-kilometer (764-mile) reached a milestone on Monday with the completion of pipe-laying in German’s exclusive economic zone, the project operator said. Among the next steps resuming work in Denmark’s part of the Baltic Sea, where the bulk of the remaining sections of the 157 kilometer link will be located.
“There are approximately 120 kilometres in Danish waters and approximately 30 kilometres in German EEZ to be laid,” Nord Stream 2 said in an emailed reply to questions on Tuesday. “We are not in a position to deliver further construction details. We will inform about further offshore construction activities in due time. Progress on the link is a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the nation’s gas export champion, Gazprom PJSC. When complete, the project will allow Russia to expand deliveries of gas to Europe and circumvent the traditional transport corridor through Ukraine. The U.S. and Eastern European nations say Nord Stream 2 will make Germany and the European Union too reliant on Russian gas.
Work on the 9.5 billion-euro ($11.6 billion) project stopped a year ago by U.S. sanctions and resumed only earlier this month when Gazprom found its own ship to lay the pipeline. Nord Stream 2 can use the vessel Fortuna to carry out the work starting Jan. 15, assisted by construction vessels Murman and Baltiyskiy Issledovatel and other supply ships, the Danish Maritime Authority said last week. Based on the Danish permit, the operator must submit an updated schedule to the nation’s Energy Agency prior to carrying out the works. So far, the regulator hasn’t received the updated plan, the agency said. The Fortuna vessel can lay as much as 1 kilometer of pipes per day. At that rate, analysts estimate Nord Stream 2 could start operations as soon as the end of 2021 under an optimistic scenario. The. U.S. meanwhile is maneuvering to tighten sanctions, extending penalties to companies that provide technical certification and insurance for the work. That legislation was part of a broader defense bill that passed congress but was vetoed by President Donald Trump. The House of Representatives voted to override the veto. If that’s endorsed by the Senate, which is dominated by Trump’s Republican Party, the new measures could come into force in the next few weeks.
Should the Senate override Trump’s veto on the defense bill, “the new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 will turn into reality,” said Mateusz Kubiak, a senior analyst at Warsaw-based energy consultant Esperis. “It might be just an another factor that will make it more difficult for the Russians to effectively and timely restart works” in the Danish waters in January, Kubiak said. “All of the additional pipe-laying activities will now be sanctioned, including suverying, trenching and rock placement,” he said. The U.S. maintains that Nord Stream 2 gives Russia too much leverage over Europe and that American liquefied natural gas supplies are a better alternative. Nord Stream 2 benefits the economies of Germany and Europe since the price of Russian pipeline gas is 20% lower than that of U.S. LNG, according to Putin.
U.S. sanctions can complicate the completion of Nord Stream 2, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters last week. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told the state TV channel Rossiya 24 on Monday that the pipeline will be completed because good for European business.
