Turkish sovereign wealth fund courts China's Belt and Road
ISTANBUL – The Turkey Wealth Fund is looking to China for investment in a number of major infrastructure projects, according to CEO Zafer Sonmez. TWF was established in 2016 as the national sovereign wealth fund and is chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As of the end of 2018, it had $223 billion in assets, including $33 billion in equity. The fund is looking for foreign and local partners, and aims to hit $100 billion in equity value by 2023.
Sonmez told the Nikkei Asian Review of plans to tie Turkey into China's Belt and Road Initiative much more deeply by "creating platforms and institutions that can team up with Chinese institutions." In his view, Turkey is "unfortunately lagging behind" on the Chinese initiative when it could be a key player. Foreign investors in Turkish infrastructure have hitherto been mainly European as well as some Japanese and South Korean, but China has got its toe in the door in recent years. Cosco Group and China Merchants Group jointly invested nearly $1 billion in an Istanbul container terminal in 2015. Shanghai Electric Power, a subsidiary of China's State Power Investment Corporation, is meanwhile investing $2.1 billion in a 1300 megawatt coal-fired power plant in Adana, along with other Chinese and Turkish partners.
In December, Chinese investors agreed to acquire a 51% stake in the third bridge spanning the Bosphorus for $688 million. Turkey has also been in talks with China on nuclear power and high-speed railway systems. To speed matters up, TWF signed a memorandum of understanding with China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation in March that could provide up to $5 billion in insurance support Energy, petrochemical and mining projects are slated as the main beneficiaries. According to Sonmez, TWF will call for engineering, procurement and construction tender this year for a coal-fired power plant in the southeastern Afsin-Elbistan area with roughly a 1600MW capacity. He said the plan is to break ground in the first half of 2021, and that six Chinese companies have shown interest. TWF is also conducting a feasibility study for a $10 billion petrochemical plant in Adana.
As bilateral ties with China improve, relations with the West have slipped. A diplomatic spat with the U.S. in 2018 caused the currency to plummet, and membership of the European Union is looking increasingly like a moon shot. Sonmez became TWF's chief executive two years ago after a six-year stint with Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund. Turkey lacks oil and gas wealth like Saudi Arabia, Norway or Qatar to build up its wealth fund. Sonmez believes TWF should look to Asia and go the asset-backed route, leverage valuable assets under its umbrella to create further value and profit.
Sonmez dismissed criticism from opposition parties that TWF will become a "parallel treasury" for government borrowing. So far, the fund has only received 1 billion euros by a syndicated loan. Industrial Commercial Bank of China was the lead book runner, and Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has also participated in the syndicated loan deal for TWF. As the current cash flow is generated by items like the national lottery and horse racing licenses, the fund is mulling further financing options such as issuing Eurobonds.

This was insane.
Three employees at Smith’s Grocery Store in Cedar Valley, Utah threatened and cursed at a customer who wore a mask as a super hero in their store.
The threats and abuse went on for seven minutes!
The episode was caught on video.
When the man walked away he called the employees sheep and made a sheep sound, “Baaaah.”
FOX13 reported:
“What is the problem here?” a woman, believed to be a Smith’s employee, can be heard saying as she walks up to a group.
“I’m wearing a mask,” a customer replies.
“You’re not wearing your mask properly,” the woman responds.
“It doesn’t say properly,” said the customer.
The quick back-and-forth marked the beginning of a 7-minute video captured inside a Smith’s Food and Drug store in Cedar City, Utah.
“We’re doing our job, what our corporation wants us to do,” the woman continues.
Then, things escalated, sparking a confrontation between three Smith’s employees and the customer, who chose to wear his mask in ‘superhero’ fashion – cutting eyeholes out of a disposable mask and then securing it around his forehead.
“You’re doing it just to be a jerk, we all know this, and so do you so cooperate,” the female employee continues.
Why don’t you get a [expletive] job and get out!” a second male employee shouts.
As the video continues, the employees seemingly take turns throwing out politically charged insults.
“Trumpster, just leave… just leave!” the second employee continues.

On the surface, there is a non-stop tide of daily diplomatic drama and escalating jawboning between the US and China which - quite theatrically - will be at each other's throat at least until the conclusion of the Nov 3 election. However, behind the scenes, one can discern just who has the upper hand.
According to Bloomberg, China’s largest state-run banks operating in Hong Kong have taken "tentative steps" to comply with US sanctions imposed on officials in the city, seeking to safeguard their access to crucial dollar funding and overseas networks, and putting their financial future above their patriotic duty to defend questionable Hong Kongers who have fallen in the crossfire. As a reminder, last week Trump sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong officials including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of China’s State Council, and Chris Tang, commissioner of the city’s police for their role in implementing a security law in Hong Kong. The officials will have property and assets in the U.S. frozen; they also will be increasingly frozen by their own financial institutions.

Justice Department Releases Report On Modernizing The Administrative Procedure Act
The Justice Department released a report today on the need for Congress to update and improve the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), the 74-year-old statute setting forth the procedures agencies must follow when regulating individuals, businesses, non-profits, and state and local government entities. The report, entitled Modernizing the Administrative Procedure Act, discusses how the administrative state has developed in ways not foreseen by the APA in 1946, how the APA might be legislatively improved, and how this Administration’s improvements to agencies’ regulatory processes could inform modernizing the APA. The Justice Department, which significantly shaped the original APA, hopes that the ideas and insights discussed in the report will encourage and inform much needed action by Congress to modernize the APA.
The report released today is based on a summit held at the Justice Department on December 6, 2019. The summit brought together leading regulatory practitioners, policymakers, and scholars to discuss how best to reform the APA, which remains largely unchanged since its enactment in 1946. These experts offered a variety of ideas, from a variety of perspectives, on how Congress could reform the APA so that regulation better serves the needs of the American people.
“This report aims to disseminate the many good ideas for modernizing the APA offered by participants in the summit,” said Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen. “The Justice Department is eager to build on the many improvements the Trump Administration has already made to the regulatory process by working with leaders in Congress to modernize the APA.”
“This important report contributes to the ongoing dialogue about how to make the American administrative system less burdensome, more accountable to the people, and more respectful of the rights of Americans,” said Paul Ray, Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. “It follows on a number of critical reforms by President Trump and is essential reading for anyone who shares a commitment to vindicating the principles of limited, accountable government and the rule of law in today’s world.”

Since August 2011, the one question is particularly active within U.S. Special Operations community; what really happened to Navy SEAL Team 6? So far, there were numerous theories what happened on that day, which is the worst battlefield calamity in U.S. Navy SEALs history.
On August 6, 2011, Taliban fighter shot down from the sky a Chinook helicopter with 38 persons on board, including 22 members of elite U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6. They were deployed to action in the Tangi River Valley of Afghanistan when a chopper (call sign Extortion 17) suddenly was shot down. 22 U.S. Navy SEALs, 9 U.S. military personnel and seven Afghan soldiers were killed on that day.
A year ago, before they were killed, members of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6 had attained international prominence for one particular reason: They were responsible for the Operation Neptune Spear which resulted with the death of world’s most wanted terrorist, Al-Qaida founder, Osama bin Laden. Since then, there are claims that American heroes were betrayed by their own government. According to online reports, only a few days after the bin Laden operation, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. — in a pathetic attempt to spike the football and gloat — publicly revealed their central role in the raid.
For ordinary people, that was seen as praise for what they did, but for professionals, it meant that his revelations put a giant target on the backs of every Navy SEAL Team 6 member. A top secret unit for cover operations, whose mission is to operate in the murky shadows, was exposed as the group that eliminated al Qaeda’s chief mastermind. Mr. Biden’s reckless actions — followed by President Obama’s own words acknowledging the secret unit’s operation — jeopardized their safety. All kind of scum bags bent on revenge and began an intense manhunt. It’s the situation when situation changes and the hunters became hunted.
Upon hearing of Biden’s disclosure, Navy SEAL members were shocked. Many of them immediately contacted family members, warning them to eradicate all personal information from social-media sites. Aaron Vaughn, one of the SEALs eventually killed in the ambush, told his mother, Karen Vaughn, to delete every reference to SEAL Team 6 from her Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Abiotech entrepreneurdropped $57 million on 2 adjacent homes in a Colorado ski resort town, shattering real estate records
Biotech entrepreneur Kevin Ness just scooped up two adjacent properties in Vail, Colorado for $57.25 million, per Sotheby's International Realty.
The purchase completely obliterated the ritzy ski town's previous real-estate record, almost doubling it. The previous record was set by a $28.7 million sale in 2017.
The two homes, which make up an 11-bedroom duplex on roughly 15,000 square feet, were previously owned and built by Alejandro Rojas, a Mexican investor, who built them in 2017. They sit in the center of Vail, with sweeping views of Vail's Gore Range.
Tye Stockton of LIV Sotheby's International Realty represented Ness in the purchase.
Ness, who is the CEO ofgene editing technology company Inscripta, told the Wall Street Journal he plans for it to be a "generational home."

But Guevara's fans might not be aware of just what their idol did and said. Here’s a look back at the history.
Guevara said he killed people without regard to guilt or innocence
In 1962, the official Cuban newspaper Revolución reported that Guevara said, “in times of excessive tension we cannot proceed weakly. At the Sierra Maestra, we executed many people by firing squad without knowing if they were fully guilty. At times, the Revolution cannot stop to conduct much investigation; it has the obligation to triumph.”
In his own diaries, Guevara waxed poetic: “I see it printed in the night sky that I ... howling like one possessed, will assault the barricades or the trenches, will take my bloodstained weapon and, consumed with fury, slaughter any enemy who falls into my hands.”
He later wrote in one of his diaries about how he shot a peasant who admitted leaking information to the enemy. “He gasped for a little while and was dead,” Guevara wrote. “To execute a human being is something ugly, but [also] exemplary.”
Thousands were killed by the Cuban regime, with many killings linked to Guevara.
WHAT DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM REALLY MEANS
“He was directly responsible for at least 124 killings,” Maria Werlau, author of the book “Che Guevara’s Forgotten Victims,” who has spent years documenting the specific people killed at Guevara's orders, told Fox News.
His defenders say he did what was necessary for a revolution.
“Yes, my father killed – but revolutions are almost always violent,” Guevara's daughter, who lives in Cuba, said in a speech in England in 2012.
Guevara created system that put gay people in labor camps
In Guevara’s diaries, he wrote of one man who, “apart from being homosexual and a first-rate bore, had been very nice to us.”
But Guevara's diary quip also spilled into reality.
“The regime that Che Guevara co-founded is the only one in modern history in the Western Hemisphere to have herded gays into forced labor camps,” Humberto Fontova, author of “Exposing the Real Che Guevara,” told Fox News.

I can only speculate about the cause of the FDA’s recalcitrance. Hydroxychloroquine is an inexpensive, generic medication. Unlike certain profit-generating, patented medications, which have been promiscuously touted on the slimmest of evidence, hydroxychloroquine has no natural financial constituency. No one will get rich from it.
Further, it seems quite possible that the FDA, a third of whose funding comes from drug companies, is under intense pressure from those companies to be extremely conservative in its handling of hydroxychloroquine. If hydroxychloroquine is used widely and comes to be recognized as highly effective, the markets for expensive and patented COVID-19 medications, including intravenous drugs that can only be used in the hospital, will shrink substantially.

Philippines Looking to Kick Off Clinical Trials for Russian COVID-19 Vaccine in October
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte previously stated that he is ready to be a test subject for the Sputnik V vaccine, developed by Russia's Gamaleya Research Institute.
The Philippines is looking to launch clinical trials for the Russian coronavirus vaccine in October, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said on Thursday. Phase three clinical trials in the Philippines are due to run from October 2020 to March 2021, after an expert panel finishes its review on the results of the trials in Russia, he added.
According to the official statement, President Duterte may get vaccinated as early as May 2021.
The vaccine registered as Gam-COVID-Vac and dubbed Sputnik-V (in reference to the first satellite, launched by the USSR in 1957), has already undergone a two-month trial. The volunteers who took the drug developed immunity to the coronavirus, which, according to medics, could provide them with at least two years of protection.
Russian Direct Investment Fund CEO Kirill Dmitriev announced the phase 3 trials this week, stating they would be held in the country, as well as abroad - in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The first batch of the coronavirus vaccine is set to be delivered to hospitals in the coming weeks and is expected to become available to the wider public starting 1 January 2021. According to the authorities, its total output is expected to reach 500 million doses in the first 12 months, and later it may be exported - but only after demand in the country is met.

New Zealand Takes A Page Out Of China's Book, Blames Latest Outbreak On Imported Goods
Remember when local CCP officials and top party health officials in Beijing tried to blame multiple COVID-19 outbreaks on imported shrimp (then later, salmon)? Well, looks like New Zealand - which arrogantly declared "victory" over COVID-19 in June before flinging its borders wide open, only to detect 4 new cases tied to the same Auckland family yesterday - is trying a similar approach.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern responded to the new cases by ordering a 3-day lockdown, and now New Zealand officials - eager to find a scapegoat - are investigating the possibility that the virus was "imported" via freight.
However, as Reuters pointed out, this line of investigation is something of a last resort, as the outbreak has "baffled" health officials, which suggests the only explanation is probably that it has been spreading slowly, and asymptomatically, this whole time. After all, NZ's outbreak was never very large, and there are only 26 active cases in the whole country. Most cases detected recently involved travelers screened while entering the country. Of course, there's always the possibility that some of them slipped through.
But somehow, despite all this, investigators have apparently traced the outbreak to a "questionable" refrigerated container owned by Americold Corp, a multinational that's big in the shipping business. Apparently, one of the infected patients worked for the company.

The source of the outbreak has baffled health officials, who said they were confident there was no local transmission of the virus in New Zealand for 102 days.
"We are working hard to put together pieces of the puzzle on how this family got infected," said Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.
Investigations were zeroing in on the potential the virus was imported by freight. Bloomfield said surface testing was underway at an Auckland cool store where a man from the infected family worked.
"We know the virus can survive within refrigerated environments for quite some time," Bloomfield said during a televised media conference.
The New Zealand unit of Atlanta, U.S.-based, Americold Realty Trust, a refrigerated storage specialist with operations in the United States, Canada, Argentina and Australia as well as New Zealand, identified itself as the owner of the cool store.
Americold NZ Managing Director Richard Winnall told the NZ Herald newspaper the infected man had been on sick leave for several days and all employees had been sent home for tests.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen in a video statement at a U.S. think tank event in Washington on Wednesday touted the strength of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship amid a growing threat from China.
“As effective our military is, we cannot stand alone without support from the community of like-minded democracies. I am proud that the relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. has never been closer,” Tsai said in her statement at the Hudson Institute.
“Across the board, we share a high degree of mutual trust and a common strategic picture of how we can work together to protect and preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific,” she added.
Both Taiwan and the U.S. are concerned by growing China’s growing aggressiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S. opposes what it considers excessive Chinese territorial claims in international waters important for global trade as well as China’s increasing bullying of its neighbors — many of whom are U.S. allies.
China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, instead of a separate country, despite its more than 50 years of self-governance and its status as a robust democracy today. China has threatened to retake the island, including by military force, by 2049.
Amb. Bi-khim Hsiao, Taiwan’s new representative to the U.S., noted at the event that there are “recent trends of a more belligerent and aggressive” Chinese military in the region.
“China seems to have less regard for the public opinion and norms of the international community. With daily intrusions into Taiwan’s [air defense identification zone], as well as lately crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, there’s an increasing risk of miscalculation and accidents,” Hsiao added.
“So, close coordination with the United States and allies in the region is needed [to forge] a joint threat picture and response to acts that upset the status quo in the Indo-Pacific region,” she added.
Tsai called for “peace, parity, democracy, and dialogue” with China.
“We will always be willing to work together in the interest of peaceful coexistence and to prevent a downward trend in cross-strait relations,” she said. “And we will never stop believing that there can be a better future ahead where both sides can share in each other’s successes and accomplishments.”
However, she added, “We must also be realistic and take stock of our differences. Taiwan has become a full-fledged democracy. Our 23 million people have the right to determine our own futures, which is antithesis to the position Beijing has taken.”
She said upholding Taiwanese democracy meant being able to defend Taiwan against “coercive actions” and that Taiwan has just unveiled its “largest ever defend budget, reaching 2.3% of our GDP.”

News outlets, pundits, politicians, and other social media blue checkmarks pushed a viral video with claims that Hurricane Hanna had knocked down part of a border wall in Texas. The claim was debunked by U.S. authorities and the Mexican public official who first published the video has deleted it from her account.
The fake news began on Monday when Yadith Valdez, a former journalist and the current spokeswoman for the Nuevo Leon Attorney General’s Office tweeted a video that showed sections of a border wall under construction collapsing from strong winds. In her now-deleted tweet, Valdez claimed the collapse was caused by Hurricane Hanna, which struck the Rio Grande Valley over the weekend. Valdez’s video gained traction in Mexico where news outlets took her claims as factual and published stories without consulting with U.S. or Mexican border officials.
After the video became viral, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement saying they were not aware of any wall panels falling down in the Rio Grande Valley. The agency claimed the video appears to be from June in New Mexico when strong winds knocked down unanchored wall panels.

The Youth Liberation Front is credited with organizing protests in Portland last week that extended into the early morning hours and turned violent, The Seattle Times and the Associated Press have reported. Portland police declared riots on multiple nights throughout the week.
The radical group’s goals extend far beyond changing policies and even beyond abolishing the police, as noted in a July 8 tweet: “we don’t want to be led, and we don’t want to lead, we just want to destroy the United States of America.”
“Abolish the United States of America,” the group wrote on Twitter in October. YLF has more than 32,000 followers on the social media platform.
“Members of our group report that watching the senate hearing on Antifa was very inspiring. Countless times the movement was referred to as being well organized, and it was conceded that ‘they are winning’ on various occasions. We will succeed in abolishing amerikkka!” YLF wrote on Twitter on Aug. 4, following a Senate hearing on Antifa violence.
YLF has applauded violence and explicitly rejects peaceful protesting.
A July 25 tweet from the group cheered agitators in Seattle who set fire to trailers at a proposed juvenile detention center. “Seattle starting off the day strong!” the tweet said.

Trump Administration Inks $1.5 Billion Deal with Moderna for 100 Million Vaccine Doses
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration entered into an agreement with American biotech company Moderna for 100 million doses of its experimental coronavirus vaccine, the White House and the drugmaker announced on Tuesday.
“I’m pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Moderna to manufacture and deliver 100 million doses of their coronavirus vaccine candidate,” Trump told reporters. “The federal government will own these vaccine doses; we’re buying them.”
Moderna Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel welcomed the deal in a statement issued Tuesday.
“We appreciate the confidence of the U.S. government in our mRNA vaccine platform and the continued support,” he declared.
Moderna’s vaccine is reportedly estimated to cost about $15 per dose.
According to the company, the government will provide the vaccine to the U.S. public free of charge.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) explained on Tuesday:
If these doses are used in a COVID-19 [coronavirus disease] vaccination campaign, the vaccine would be available to the American people at no cost. As is customary with government-purchased vaccines, healthcare professionals could charge for the cost of administering the vaccine.
Under the agreement, the government will reportedly have the option to buy up to an additional 400 million additional doses.
“With the latest deal, the U.S. has agreed to spend more than $9 billion for the shots,” the Wall Street Journal noted on Tuesday. “It has also invested in vaccine research and development, as well as supplies like vials and syringes.”
The agreement marked the sixth vaccine-related deal by the U.S. government, which has already secured over 500 million doses from other drugmakers as part of Operation Warp Speed, including Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Pfizer and Sanofi, and AstraZeneca.
President Trump has promised to develop and deliver a safe and effective vaccine in record time (by January 2021) through his administration’s multi-billion-dollar Operation Warp Speed, a public-private partnership.
“In creating a vaccine portfolio for Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration is increasing the likelihood that the United States will have at least one safe, effective vaccine by 2021,” HHS Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement on Tuesday.
Moderna is co-developing the vaccine with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), an HHS component.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., warns Americans could die if Congress fails to pass the unduly delayed fourth coronavirus relief package by September.
On Wednesday, Pelosi told reporters at the Capitol she hopes the laborious and fruitless talks on coronavirus relief won't drag on until September.
“People will die,” she said.
There have been no person-to-person talks between the House and the Senate since talks collapsed Aug. 7. On Wednesday, however, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Pelosi spoke on the phone. Pelosi later said nothing was achieved during the phone call.
In a joint statement with Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, released later, Pelosi said they're against holding further discussions until Republicans offer to increase the amount of money they’re willing to spend to combat the raging COVID-19 pandemic. As of Wednesday, the pandemic had inflicted 5.6 million cases and 169,000 deaths in the United States.
Schumer and Pelosi said they're making this demand after Mnuchin rejected their offer to find a middle ground between the Democrats’ $3 trillion HEROES Act passed May 15 and the GOP’s $1 trillion HEALS Act revealed July 27.
“We have again made clear to the Administration that we are willing to resume negotiations once they start to take this process seriously,” they said.
The intractable logjams hindering any progress are the weekly payments to jobless Americans and aid for state and local governments.
Democrats want to retain the $600 weekly aid provided in their CARES Act signed into law on March 27. Republicans want to either do away with the aid or rerduce it to a smaller amount. They also oppose aid to states, claiming this will allow Democrat governors to escape whatever financial mess it is they're in.
Pelosi also said no progress has been made on reaching a compromise on money for food aid, rental assistance and schools. Specifically, the Democrats want $60 billion for food assistance while the GOP says $250,000 will be sufficient.
Despite the discord, Pelosi is confident Republicans will see it their way.
"As a practical matter, they're going to have to come to the table," she asserted.

Harvey Risch says treatment effective in helping people in early stages of disease, especially those with higher risks.
Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic Yale School of Public Health epidemiology professor Harvey Risch is asserting that the drug hydroxychloroquine, in conjunction with zinc and appropriate antibiotics, can help high-risk patients recover from COVID-19.
Risch draws a distinction between two stages of the illness, noting that while the treatment will likely work quickly during the first stage, it is not effective in helping people who have advanced to the more serious second stage.
"At the first stage, it is a flu-like illness. That illness will not kill you. If you are a high-risk patient and begin treatment immediately, you will almost certainly be done with it in a few days. When not treated, high-risk patients may progress. The virus then causes severe pneumonia and attacks many organs, including the heart. In this second stage, hydroxychloroquine is not effective," he explains in a Washington Examiner opinion piece.
Risch says that people in the high-risk category should be provided treatment even before they receive the results of their coronavirus test.
"The second thing to know is that most low-risk patients survive without treatment. Low risk means you are under age 60 and have no chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, have no past treatment for cancer, are not immunocompromised, etc. High risk means you are over 60 or you have one or more of those chronic conditions. High-risk patients need immediate treatment when they first show symptoms," he said.
"It is a serious and unconscionable mistake that the FDA has used inpatient data to block emergency use petitions for outpatient use. Further, already back in March, the FDA approved the emergency use of hydroxychloroquine for hospitalized patients, for whom it is demonstrably less effective than for outpatients," he said. "If hydroxychloroquine satisfied the FDA criteria for emergency inpatient use in March, it should more than satisfy those criteria now for outpatient use, where the evidence is much stronger."

At least 3% of COVID-19 deaths involve injury, poisoning, or other adverse events, CDC says
'It seems that these are largely cases where someone hospitalized with a non-fatal injury has contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital and subsequently died,' a spokesman for CDC's National Center for Health Statistics says.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites numerous "adverse events" such as intentional self-harm, drownings and exposure to earthquakes as contributing factors in over 4,000 of its recorded COVID-19 deaths.
In the CDC's weekly provisional death counts for COVID-19, the agency attributes just over 145,378 total deaths to the virus in the U.S. through Aug. 8. Of those, 4,401 — about 3% — are listed as involving "intentional and unintentional injury, poisoning and other adverse events."
The agency lists numerous International Classification of Diseases codes used to categorize the factors associated with those deaths. Among those codes are narcotics poisoning, alcohol poisoning, pedestrian injuries, helicopter accidents, suicide, and numerous other incidents far removed from the actual COVID-19 disease.
Also among the listed codes are deaths from tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning, "exposure to sunlight," "cataclysmic storm[s]," and other forces of nature.
What is not ascertainable from the listed codes is the specific coding for each death; a comprehensive list of the deaths and their associated codes is not present on the website.
Jeff Lancashire, a spokesman for the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, told Just the News on Wednesday that the agency "do[es] not have a breakdown of those codes at this time."
"From looking at some of these records," he said, "it seems that these are largely cases where someone hospitalized with a non-fatal injury has contracted COVID19 while in the hospital and subsequently died."
"As more data come in, we will take a closer look at these deaths," he added.
The CDC lays out the provisional numbers as part of its survey of "conditions contributing to deaths where COVID-19 was listed on the death certificate."
The agency states that provisional death counts "deliver the most complete and accurate picture of lives lost to COVID-19."
The numbers "are based on death certificates, which are the most reliable source of data and contain information not available anywhere else, including comorbid conditions, race and ethnicity, and place of death," the agency explains.

On Wednesday night, Trevor Noah took aim at Marjorie Taylor Greene, a woman who recently won the Georgia Republican primary and will surely be elected to Congress in her heavily-red 14th congressional district.
“Congress is about to get a lot crazier,” offered Trevor Noah.
Greene, 46, has a long history of racism and pushing conspiracy theories. She’s recently called the Jewish businessman George Soros a “Nazi”; compared the elections of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to Congress to “an Islamic invasion”; said minorities find themselves unemployed because they are “lazy”; accused the Democratic Party of keeping Black people in “a modern-day form of slavery”; and said that Black people should be “proud” of Confederate monuments. She’s also been endorsed by a number of prominent white supremacists.

Colombian Electoral Council Opens Formal Investigation Of President Duque For Illegal Campaign Financing
The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Colombia announced today that it has opened a preliminary investigation against President Iván Duque and his political party Centro Democrático (CD). The party allegedly failed to comply with electoral regulations on electoral financing during the campaign of 2018 in which Duque was elected president.
The CNE explained that the investigation is related to alleged contributions from the Venezuelan businessman Oswaldo Cisneros for a total value of US$300,000.
According to the Colombian Constitution, national electoral campaigns are prohibited from receiving donations from abroad. Cisneros is a businessman linked to the oil industry and his family is among the richest in Venezuela.
The starting point for the investigation was wiretapping requested by the Colombian Public Ministry. The people involved in the conversations were: Nubia Stella Martínez, director of CD; María Claudia Daza, who was an advisor to former president Alvaro Uribe and is now out of the country; and José “Ñeñe” Hernández, a cattle rancher who was murdered last year in Brazil during a robbery.
María Daza spoke with both about the alleged contributions of the Venezuelan businessman Oswaldo Cisneros. In the conversation between Martínez and Daza, published by the newspaper El Tiempo, Uribe’s former adviser asked, “What happened with the Venezuelan?”, to which the director of the president’s political party replied, “Yes. Do you know how much he gave us? $300,000.”
However, the CD director herself tried to justify her words by arguing that she suffered a ‘lapse’ when speaking with Daza. “It was not ‘gave’, but ‘offered to give’ (…). I said that sum because it was the one the businessman used. But one thing is what people offer in the campaigns and another is what they actually end up giving,” Martinez explained to the Colombian newspaper.
The CNE summoned both to testify, as well as Luis Guillermo Echeverri, campaign manager of current president Ivan Duque. In addition, the electoral council sent a letter in which the “CD is asked to send a copy of the accounting supports of the electoral campaign of the then candidate Dr Iván Duque Márquez, in order to determine the origin and amount of the contributions consigned in the income report and expenses of the campaign to the Presidency.”

The former head of Boston’s police union was reportedly arrested Wednesday in connection to child rape allegations.
Patrick Rose, the one-time president of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association and retired cop, has been charged with multiple counts of indecent assault on a child under 14, a law enforcement source told the Boston Globe.
Rose’s charges pertain to accusations that he raped a minor, according to a local ABC affiliate, WCVB.
“I am deeply disturbed by these horrific allegations, which must be investigated to the fullest extent of the law,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement to WCVB.
Rose joined the Boston Police Department in 1994 and was elected union president in 2016, the station reported. He retired from the force in 2018.
The former union leader is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
