Robot Team Builds High-Performance Digital Structure for NASA

Greater than the sum of its parts: NASA tests the capability of a system that includes simple robots, structural building blocks, and smart algorithms to build functional, high-performance large-scale structures, ultimately enabling autonomous deep-space infrastructure.

If they build it, we will go – for the long-term.

Future long-duration and deep-space exploration missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond will require a way to build large-scale infrastructure, such as solar power stations, communications towers, and habitats for crew. To sustain a long-term presence in deep space, NASA needs the capability to construct and maintain these systems in place, rather than sending large pre-assembled hardware from Earth.

NASA’s Automated Reconfigurable Mission Adaptive Digital Assembly Systems (ARMADAS) team is developing a hardware and software system to meet that need. The system uses different types of inchworm-like robots that can assemble, repair, and reconfigure structural materials for a variety of large-scale hardware systems in space. The robots can do their jobs in orbit, on the lunar surface, or on other planets – even before humans arrive.

Researchers at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley recently performed a laboratory demonstration of the ARMADAS technology and analyzed the system’s performance. During the tests, three robots worked autonomously as a team to build a meters-scale shelter structure – roughly the size of a shed – using hundreds of building blocks. The team published their results today in Science Robotics.

“The ground assembly experiment demonstrated crucial parts of the system: the scalability and reliability of the robots, and the performance of structures they build. This type of test is key for maturing the technology for space applications,” said Christine Gregg, ARMADAS chief engineer at NASA Ames.

The high strength, stiffness, and low mass of the structural product is comparable to today’s highest-performance structures, like long bridges, aircraft wings, and space structures – such as the International Space Station’s trusses. Such performance is a giant leap for the field of robotically reconfigurable structures.

“‘Mission adaptive’ capabilities allow a system to be reused for multiple purposes, including ones that adopt hardware from completed activities, decreasing the cost of new missions,” said Kenny Cheung, ARMADAS principal investigator at NASA Ames. “‘Digital assembly systems’ refers to the use of discrete building blocks, as a physical analog to the digital systems that we use today.”

Many people use digital systems to view photos or text on a display, like a smartphone screen. A digital image uses a small set of pixel types to form almost any image on a high-resolution display. You can think of pixels as building blocks for 2D space. The ARMADAS system can use a small set of 3D building blocks – called voxels, short for volumetric pixels – to form almost any structure. Just like digital images, the ARMADAS system is ‘programmable,’ meaning that it can self-reconfigure to meet evolving needs, with the help of the robots.

The voxels used in the demonstration were made of strong and lightweight composite materials formed into a shape called a cuboctahedron. The voxels resemble a wire-frame soccer ball with flat faces and highly precise geometry.

“It’s surprising how strong and stiff these systems are, given how they look,” said Cheung. “Making large structures from small building blocks allows us to use good materials at the lowest cost. The size of the structures that can be made is only limited by the number of building blocks that can be supplied.”

This kind of scalability is revolutionary in comparison to current methods of fabricating spacecraft in factories, or even 3D printing.

Crippled Peregrine moon lander expected to crash to Earth today carrying human remains

The private Peregrine moon lander's long journey is about to come to an end, back on its home planet.

Peregrine will likely slam into Earth's atmosphere over the southern Pacific Ocean today (Jan. 18) around 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT), according to its builder, the Pittsburgh-based company Astrobotic.

"Astrobotic has positioned the Peregrine spacecraft for a safe, controlled re-entry to Earth over a remote area of the South Pacific," the company wrote in an update on Wednesday evening (Jan. 17).

"The team has been continuously monitoring our re-entry analysis with NASA," Astrobotic added, noting that such work has revealed "no anticipated hazards."

Peregrine launched Jan. 8 on the first-ever mission of Vulcan Centaur, United Launch Alliance's powerful new rocket.

The lander is toting 20 payloads for a variety of customers, including NASA, which put five scientific experiments on board via its Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. The lander is also carrying human remains, in the form of memorial payloads manifested by the companies Celestis and Elysium Space.

Peregrine aimed to deliver this gear to the surface of the moon next month, but that plan was scuttled by a fuel leak that cropped up shortly after liftoff. The lander's handlers traced the problem to a ruptured oxidizer tank, which may have been caused by a stuck valve.

Despite the propulsion anomaly, Peregrine remains operational. The lander made it all the way out to lunar distance recently, then began looping back, on a collision course with Earth. Astrobotic, working with NASA, developed a plan to make the coming impact as safe as possible.

The Peregrine team took two main steps to put Peregrine on the best possible crash trajectory, Astrobotic wrote in Wednesday evening's update. First, they performed a series of 23 small burns with the lander's main engines. (The fuel leak made a single long burn impossible.)

"Secondly, we adjusted the spacecraft's attitude so the force induced by the leaking propellant shifted us towards the South Pacific Ocean," Astrobotic wrote.

"The procedures the team executed were to minimize the risk of debris reaching land," they added. "Astrobotic continues to work closely with NASA and other relevant government authorities to keep everyone informed and to solicit feedback as appropriate."

We should hear more about Peregrine's death plunge soon, and not just via an update on Astrobotic's website. The company plans to host a media telecon on Friday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) to discuss Peregrine's mission and its fate.

Pentagon issues statement in response to ‘jellyfish’ UAP questions

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) released a statement Wednesday in response to questions about a newly surfaced video of an alleged unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP).

What’s now been dubbed a “jellyfish” UAP was allegedly recorded by the U.S. military over a U.S. joint operations base in Iraq around 2018 and released by investigative journalist Jeremy Corbell.

NewsNation has not independently verified this footage.

According to Corbell, the object was officially designated a UAP by the Pentagon, and the footage was taken with thermographic/forward-looking infrared radar.

Sue Gough, spokesperson for the DOD, said in a statement that they “do not comment on the authenticity of alleged DOD material that may have been leaked.”

Gough emphasized the DOD’s commitment to openness and accountability while balancing the necessity to protect sensitive information.

“DOD takes public interest in unidentified anomalous phenomena seriously and is committed to openness and accountability to the American people,” the statement continued. “This commitment must be balanced with the department’s obligation to protect sensitive information, sources, and methods. “

The object, which does resemble a jellyfish, can be seen on video moving through a sensitive military installation before moving over water, where it began what Corbell describes as a controlled descent before submerging.

NewsNation special correspondent Ross Coulthart called the Pentagon’s response “very revealing.”

“I must say it’s very revealing for what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t reveal a categorical denial,” he said. “It’s the last resort of governments and intelligence services when they don’t want to answer a question. Essentially, it’s a neither confirm nor deny.”

Coulthart says the “jellyfish” video “is a very big issue here for the Pentagon.”

“Mr. Corbell is making the direct accusation that this was a designated UAP,” Coulthart pointed out. “That’s not something that’s denied by the Pentagon. I don’t know why it couldn’t be denied if it was untrue. And I think it really does put pressure on the Pentagon to start being more open and transparent with the public.”

Michael Cincoski, a marine who spoke with NewsNation, was an intelligence surveillance recognizance tactical controller at the base in Iraq in 2018. He said he was shown the full video and that soldiers weren’t sure what to make of it.

Cincoski says the video was taken from an aerostat, a big balloon that looks like a blimp and was over the base. It has cameras on it to keep a lookout for threats.

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), part of the United States Office of the Secretary of Defense, investigates unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

Gough said the AARO will provide updates to the public via its website as it resolves UAP cases, “including sharing the analytic approach and method used for each case, as well as imagery, when approved for public release.”

And his hysterical, ill-informed supporters are all too eager to lap up this absurdity, feverishly asking for seconds.

Who can forget the bizarre Hitler-like speech Biden delivered in Philadelphia, behind a blood-red backdrop, flanked by two United States military guards? That speech was such a turnoff that the vast majority of Americans saw it as a divisive tactic to polarize the nation.

A new poll has revealed that a majority of Americans say that Biden’s prime time speech, delivered last week in Philadelphia before a blood red backdrop,was “a threat to this country,” a “dangerous escalation,” and was “designed to incite conflict.”

The poll, conducted by the Trafalgar Group for the Convention of States Action, found that 56.8 percent of likely general election voters said that Biden’s speech in which he designated MAGA Republicans extremists “represents a dangerous escalation in rhetoric and is designed to incite conflict amongst Americans.”

And sadly, Americans might be onto something, because look what happened just one week after that angry, blood-red speech. A young conservative was murdered by a radical left-winger simply because he was a Republican.

Joe Biden is laser-focused on convincing Americans that they’re domestic terrorists simply for demanding transparent, secure elections, a secure country, and a robust working class. But as we said earlier, what other platform does Biden have? This was all too clear on January 6th, when Biden delivered yet another nasty and divisive speech labeling Trump as both a “loser” and a “threat to democracy.” That’s a hard pill to swallow, particularly as Trump consistently outperforms Biden in numerous polls.

Charlie Kirk made a great point:regardless of personal opinions on Trump’s rhetoric, his stances on immigration, the economy, and China resonate with the American people. These are three critical areas where Biden’s performance has been lackluster, among countless other issues.

At the end of the day, Americans just want to know they’ve got a meal waiting and they’re living in a country that’s safe and doing well. That’s just not the case under Biden. Instead of fixing things, he’s busy pointing fingers at everyone else. Regardless of his motivations, Jamie’s spot on—this kind of blame game is going to come back to haunt him big time.

Montana Attorney General Blocks Measure to Make Killing Babies in Abortions a Constitutional Right

Attorney General Austin Knudsen of Montana stopped an abortion ballot proposal from going through on Tuesday, claiming it was “legally insufficient,” according to the Montana Free Press.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana launched the ballot initiative in November 2023, which would prevent “the government from denying or burdening the right to abortion before fetal viability,” according to the Idaho Capital Sun. Knudsen dismissed the proposal, arguing in a memorandum that it was “legally insufficient” and “logrolls multiple distinct political choices into a single initiative,” the Montana Free Press reported.

“Ballot Measure 14 creates an express right to abortion but denies voters the ability to express their views on the nuance of the right,” Knudsen wrote.

Knudsen also claimed that the proposal as written would prevent state lawmakers from imposing any restrictions on abortion if it’s deemed “medically necessary,” according to the Montana Free Press.

“This clause makes it so even regulations that serve a compelling state interest and are narrowly tailored to that interest cannot survive,” Knudsen wrote, the Montana Free Press reported.

In addition to prohibiting the government from making laws limiting abortion before “viability,” the ballot initiative would also prevent state officials from enacting any law that would ban abortions in cases deemed necessary to protect the life and health of the mother, according to the Montana Free Press. Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signed a 15-week abortion ban into law in May 2023 that prohibited dilation and evacuation abortions, which typically take place after that point in the pregnancy.

Lawmakers Bring Bill in Response to Capitol Breach

Mr. Markey and Mr. Raskin introduced their legislation just days after the three-year anniversary of the breach at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a point they repeatedly referenced in a press release announcing the bill.

Some individuals have also been charged for having firearms and other deadly weapons on their person while on Capitol grounds that day. In trials against members of the Oath Keepers and other defendants, prosecutors made note of members of the group moving through the crowds in an apparent practiced and organized fashion frequently described as a “stack” formation, as well as wearing tactical gear, and using portable communication devices to stay in contact and coordinate their actions.

“Three years ago, white supremacists affiliated with paramilitary organizations stormed the U.S. Capitol, shattering windows, walls, and the families of five U.S. Capitol police officers,” said Mr. Markey. “Private paramilitary actors, such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, pose a serious threat to democracy and the rule of law, and we must create new prohibitions on their unauthorized activities that interfere with the exercise of people’s constitutional rights. The forces of bigotry, hatred, and violent extremism must be stopped for the sake of our democracy.”

Prior to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, members of the Proud Boys had organized at conservative and right-leaning gatherings and demonstrations and clashed with violent counter-demonstrators—often members of the Antifa extremist group—intent on disrupting those gatherings.

Following the death of George Floyd, a black man, in Minneapolis police custody in 2020, many left-wing groups organized in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and engaged in protests and riots throughout the summer of 2020. At various demonstrations, members of these groups often clashed with police officers. For weeks, rioters also threw fireworks, incendiary devices, and rocks at federal officers guarding a federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon.

During a political rally in support of President Donald Trump in Portland on Aug. 29, 2020, Trump supporters were met with violent counterprotesters. Trump supporter Aaron Danielson was shot and killed while walking to a parking garage following the event. In an interview with Vice News while evading law enforcement, self-described Antifa activist Michael Reinhoel described shooting Danielson while claiming he acted in self-defense. Reinhoel was charged with murder but was shot and killed during a confrontation with federal law enforcement officers attempting his arrest.

Those are things they’re gonna have to force on people, and they are more than willing and eager to force that stuff on you, but they need the power to do it. So they have to go through the motions. The modern-day Democrats have to go through the motions of campaigning, and they have to go through the motions of trying to win the hearts and minds of voters.

But they resent the hell out of it. And in their world, it’s the one thing standing in their way: This need, this requirement to win elections. And I’m just telling you: As soon as they can figure out a way to eliminate elections, they will do it, ’cause they resent the hell out of it. The executive director of the Rainbow Resource Center, a prominent LGBTQ+ support center based in Modesto, has been identified as one of 17 men apprehended on suspicion of attempting to engage in sexual activities with a minor.

The revelation was first reported by the Modesto Bee.

Gerad Slayton, 42, was taken into custody during a sting operation organized by the Turlock Police Department, targeting individuals believed to be seeking illicit encounters with minors. Slayton, recently appointed as the executive director of the Rainbow Center, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing resources for LGBTQ+ individuals across all age groups, faces allegations of pursuing sexual activities with minors.

Secretary Timothy Geithner, Sally Susman Elected Co-chairs of the International Rescue Committee

New York, NY, February 25, 2019 — Today the International Rescue Committee (IRC) announced the election of Secretary Timothy Geithner and Sally Susman as co-chairs of the board of directors. Secretary Geithner and Ms. Susman will succeed Katherine Farley and Tracy Wolstencroft as board co-chairs.

Secretary Geithner has served on the IRC board since 2013, and was most recently the chair of IRC overseers, a group that advises the board of directors on matters of policy, advocacy and fundraising.

Secretary Geithner, whose first exposure to the IRC dates back to 1979, when he visited refugee camps along the Thai-Cambodian border, said, “I am proud to help support this vital organization at this time of extreme humanitarian need in so many parts of the world.”

Mr. Geithner was the 75th secretary of the treasury for the first term of President Barack Obama’s administration, and served as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between 2003 and 2009. He is currently the president of Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm based in New York.

Ms. Susman has been an IRC board member since 2011, and has been a driving force behind the organization’s ever-growing partnership with Pfizer.

“The services that the IRC provides are more critical than ever before, as record number of people are fleeing war and persecution worldwide,” said Ms. Susman. “I am honored at the opportunity to continue supporting IRC’s programs in over 40 war-affected countries, as well as their resettlement work in the U.S.”

Ms. Susman is currently the executive vice president, chief corporate affairs officer for Pfizer, where she leads the company’s global policy, public affairs and communications efforts, and is vice chair of the Pfizer Foundation. She is also on the board of WPP, the UK-based global advertising company.

David Miliband, IRC president and CEO, said, “Secretary Geithner and Sally Susman are committed, thoughtful, innovative supporters of the IRC and we are thrilled to have them co-chair our very strong board of directors. Carole Marie Sonnenfeld and Timothy Franz Geithner, 1983 graduates of Dartmouth College, were married yesterday at his parents' summer home in East Orleans, Mass. The Rev. Thomas Keehn, a United Church of Christ minister, officiated.

Mrs. Geithner, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sonnenfeld of Princeton, N.J., is a research associate for Common Cause, a public-affairs lobbying group in Washington. Her father is a professor of French and comparative literature at Princeton University. Her mother, Portia Sonnenfeld, is conductor of the Chamber Symphony of Princeton.

Mr. Geithner, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter F. Geithner of Larchmont, N.Y., graduated from the International School of Bangkok, Thailand. His father is the program officer in charge of developing countries for the Ford Foundation. His mother, Deborah Geithner, is a piano teacher.

Mary P. Schowalter was maid of honor. Mr. Geithner was best man for his son.

When Timothy Franz Geithner (pronounced GITE-ner), 47, began work at the New York Federal Reserve in November 2003, he was met with quite a bit of resistance. A number of insiders saw him as a poor choice; Tom Schlesinger, executive director of Virginia-based think tank the Financial Markets Center, noted that "there is very little in Geithner's resume that shows experience in regulatory issues," lamenting that his appointment "raises questions about the willingness of the New York Fed to aggressively supervise financial holding companies in its territory."

Since Nov. 21, though, when word leaked that Geithner would be named Treasury Secretary in Barack Obama's Administration, reviews have been somewhat more positive. (See pictures of Barack Obama's campaign behind the scenes.) He's now an insider himself, knee deep in the unfolding economic crisis, who has worked closely with former New York Fed chief Gerald Corrigan, former U.S. Fed chief Alan Greenspan and current Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and head of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke. While some call these relationships a crutch that he relies on too heavily, others credit him for his energy, resilience and broad range of experience. A look at his personal history:

Timothy Franz Geithner (/ˈɡaɪtnər/; born August 18, 1961) is an American former central banker who served as the 75th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013. He was the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2003 to 2009, following service in the Clinton administration. Since March 2014, he has served as president and managing director of Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm headquartered in New York City.[2]

As President of the New York Fed and Secretary of the Treasury, Geithner had a key role in government efforts to recover from the financial crisis of 2007–08 and the Great Recession. At the New York Fed, Geithner helped manage crises involving Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and the American International Group; as Treasury Secretary, he oversaw allocation of $350 billion under the Troubled Asset Relief Program, enacted during the previous administration in response to the subprime mortgage crisis. Geithner also managed the administration's efforts to restructure regulation of the nation's financial system,[3] attempts to spur recovery of the mortgage market and the automobile industry, demands for protectionism, tax reform, and negotiations with foreign governments on global finance issues.[4][5]

Family and education

Geithner was born in Manhattan, New York, to Peter Franz Geithner and Deborah Moore.[6] His father, a German American, was the director of the Ford Foundation's Asia program in New York during the 1990s, after working for the United States Agency for International Development in Zambia and Zimbabwe.[7]During the early 1980s, Geithner's father oversaw the Ford Foundation's microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham Soetoro, Barack Obama's mother, and they met at least once in Jakarta.[8]Geithner's paternal grandfather, Paul Herman Geithner (1902–1972), immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1908 from Zeulenroda, Germany.[9]

Geithner's mother, a Mayflower descendant, belongs to a New England family.[9] Her father, Charles Frederick Moore, Jr., served as vice-president of public relations for the Ford Motor Company from 1952 to 1964, and advised President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as Nelson Rockefeller and George W. Romney, on their respective presidential campaigns. His uncle, Jonathan Moore, served in the departments of Defense, Justice and State, as well as in the United Nations.[7]

Ford Foundation Links Parents of Obama and Treasury Secretary Nominee

In an unusual twist of fate, the parents of Barack Obama and his pick for secretary of Treasury, Timothy Geithner, share a nonprofit connection: they worked at the Ford Foundation at the same time.

Indeed, Mr. Geithner’s father was head of the philanthropy’s Asia grant making for a period in the early 1980s and oversaw the work of Mr. Obama’s mother, who developed the organization’s microfinance programs in Indonesia.

A 38-year-old Quebec man has been found guilty for starting a series of devastating forest fires - which lead to hectares worth of damage and displaced hundreds.

Brian Paré has plead guilty to staring 14 forest fires, including fires in Chapais and Lake Cavan, at a courthouse in Chibougamau in Quebec.

Paré, who has been detained since his arrest, said little during the hearing, only responding 'yes' to a series of questions from the judge.

He had been charged 13 counts of arson and one count of arson with disregard for human life.

It is unclear if the court has already determined his punishment or will hold another hearing.

Prosecutor Marie-Philippe Charron told the court the damage the Paré's actions had caused in the country and how police were able to arrest him.

She told the court that two of the 14 fires set by him had forced the evacuation of around 500 homes in Chapais in June 2023.

It has been reported at the time that around 80 forest fires were burning on June 1, including eight that were 'out of control,' according to SOPFEU, a fire prevention agency.

At a press briefing on the same day, Mayor Isabelle Lessard said the evacuation order is not being lifted 'given that the fire is still uncontrolled and still threatening.'

The young mayor resigned from her position in November after 'suffering the effects of burnout' from handling the wildfires.

One of the largest fires ignited by Paré was in Lake Cavan and burned 873 hectares of forest, she further told the court.

'On May 31 at 8.30pm, the town of Chapais issued a mandatory evacuation order due to the raging fires, in particular the fire at Lake Cavan as well as the airport fire, two fires that are included in the charges and were cause by the accused,' Charron said.

Ariel Quirosis the entrepreneurial force behind Jay Peak ski resort and the $600 million Northeast Kingdom Economic Development Initiative – one of the largest development projects ever attempted in Vermont.

Though the project is high profile, Quiros is not. The international tycoon, though sometimes seen, is seldom heard.

The first generation American stands out at press conferences for his mystique: When he’s not got the ear of the governor, Quiros is most often seen standing uncomfortably before a crowd with pursed lips, staring silently and expressionless, at nothing in particular, through ice blue eyes.

Quiros quietly presides over an integrated set of projects that together constitute the largest private investment Vermont has ever seen: expansions at Jay Peak, development of the newly renamed Q Burke Mountain ski area, the mixed use Renaissance Block planned for downtown Newport, the future site of a biotech firm in the same town, and the promise of a new and improved Newport State Airport in Coventry.

“I make the vision,” he says quietly, a touch of gravel in his voice after 20-plus years of smoking.

His accent, clearly from New York, is also infused with the Puerto Ricanand Venezuelan accents of his mother and father, respectively. He speaks three languages and his English borrows sometimes a tense from Spanish or a cadence from Korean, his wife’s native tongue.

He just sees things, Quiros says. He gets a vision for what can be, ignores all obstacles, and surrounds himself with people who can make it happen.

And they do, which is why Quiros likes to keep to himself. Business risk is thrilling, but trust is a precious commodity for a millionaire. Quiros is generous with friends, but says he hasn’t fought for all he’s built to give it away, much less have it taken.

Yet many in the state who do business with Quiros have never met the man, and most Vermonters may not even know his name.

Quiros would just as soon keep it that way. He has, by design, remained behind the scenes.

The Quiros Family

Quiros’ path as an entrepreneur began long ago, as a boy selling Chiclets chewing gum to classmates for double his cost from a locker at the Catholic Good Shepherd School in New York City. He sold Christmas cards door-to-door, newspapers, even blue jeans from the subway station at 125th Street in Harlem.

“When you have to survive, that’s when you become an entrepreneur,” Quiros says.

As the family legend goes, Ary and his little sister, Nicole, were born in Germany during the time Ariel Quiros guarded Adolf Hitler’s deputy and Nazi party leader, Rudolf Hess. They joke that Ary was born in Cell Block 3.

“It was boring. A lot of paperwork,” Ariel Quiros says of his time at Spandau Prison. Nonetheless, it remains a point of pride. When he wasn’t with Hess, Quiros took turns with British, French and Soviet military personnel guarding the Berlin Wall at Checkpoints Charlie, Alpha, Delta and Bravo.

The Houthis are moving their missiles and drones around in the same fashion that all of the Bowler hatted, wool-coat wearing, Pierce Brosnan look-alikes are doing as they run around the museum exchanging fake briefcases. In the same fashion that the police were frustrated in trying to arrest Brosnan and prevent the theft of a piece of art, the U.S. and U.K. keep launching airstrikes at sites where they think the mobile missile platforms are and still cannot stop Yemen from launching more missiles. Tiny Yemen is frustrating the world’s “greatest” military power in the world.

This would be hilarious were it not for the fact the U.S. and U.K are killing people with no certainty that they are responsible for the actual launch of missiles. The Western world is striving to ignore the purpose behind the Houthi shutdown of the Red Sea — i.e., force Israel to cease killing Palestinians in Gaza. While most world leaders ignore this fact, the Houthi actions are being celebrated by street Arabs and Muslims. In other words, a vast sea of humanity. This is a true David vs. Goliath struggle.

Yemen, based on videos of previous military parades, has thousands of missiles and drones. The International Institute for Security Studies reports:

In parades in 2022 and 2023, the Houthis unveiled additional ASCMs, including what appeared to be two anti-ship versions of the Iranian Quds/351 LACM. One version is allegedly equipped with a radar-homing seeker (Sayyad), and the other has an electro-optical/infrared seeker (Quds Z-0). Based on the range of the original Quds and on Houthi statements, both systems could have a range of at least 800 km.

The parades also featured a variety of anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) and guided rockets employing Iranian infrared or imaging infrared seeker technology. The 450 km-range Asef appears to be a rebranded ASBM version of Iran’s Fateh 313 missile, while the Tankil represents a previously unseen anti-ship version of the IRGC-developed 500 km-range Zohayr. The two designs constitute the heaviest Houthi anti-ship missiles, both with warheads of more than 300 kilograms, and are of Iranian origin.

Three smaller ASBMs – the 140 km-range Faleq, the Mayun and the Bahr al-Ahmar – strongly resemble Iranian design philosophy and seeker technology but do not precisely match known Iranian systems. They could either be Iranian systems not observed before and smuggled to Yemen, or Houthi-produced rockets combined using Iranian guidance kits, not unlike developments made by another Iran proxy, the Lebanese Hizbullah, in its precision-guided surface-to-surface missile programme. Finally, the Houthis have presented an S-75 (SA-2) surface-to-air missile, likely from pre-war Yemeni army stocks, modified for an anti-ship role using an Iranian guidance kit.

This means the United States and the United Kingdom will be embroiled in a lengthy, costly campaign with no guarantee of success. Fear of depleting U.S. Naval supplies of air defense missiles is the reason the U.S. is relying on fixed-wing aircraft to deliver bombs. The U.S. is being very sparing about using Tomahawk cruise missiles because the inventory is being rapidly depleted:

Raytheon builds Tomahawks at a facility in Arizona. Each missile costs the Navy more than $1 million. In 2020 the Navy has around 4,000 Tomahawks. But that number is set to fall as the fleet upgrades some missiles and disposes of others.

While this means Raytheon will profit from new USG contracts to build more Tomahawks until an alternative becomes available, the U.S. cannot produce enough cruise missiles to sustain a rate of fire that uses up 20 missiles a week. DOD also has to keep a reserve for contingencies in Iran and China. The United States is like the Big Bad Wolf huffing and puffing at the brick house. For all of its bluster it cannot close the deal and shutdown Yemen.

Global Positioning System (GPS) disturbances detected across NATO member Poland on Tuesday have sparked speculation of Russian involvement, following a similar incident in the region this month. When New Hampshire voters cast their ballots in Tuesday’s first-in-the-nation primary, many will do so using scanners that are at least 15 years old — with some potentially dating back to Bill Clinton’s presidency.

Election experts say the aging AccuVote ballot tabulators in use across roughly half the state’s towns and cities don’t pose additional security risks. The concern is their age.

With a dwindling supply of replacement parts, breakdowns could create Election Day headaches for local election officials, who might be forced to count ballots by hand — a process that could delay reporting their results. Malfunctions and ballot-counting delays in other states in recent years have sometimes been used to promote conspiracy theories that undermine public confidence in the vote, despite no evidence of any widespread problems with voting machines.

Franklin, a small city about 20 miles north of the state capital, has no wiggle room if something goes awry with its scanners.

“We have three machines and three polling places. That’s it, no backup,” said Olivia Zink, a member of the Franklin City Council who also is executive director of the voter advocacy group Coalition for Open Democracy. “If one goes down, we hand count.”

Zink, who will be working at her local polling place Tuesday, said she is less worried about hand counting even if turnout is robust among the 4,500 registered voters because the ballot contains only the presidential primary. She urged everyone to be patient if results are delayed. One potential glitch: If it’s snowy or rainy, damp ballots can mess up a ballot scanner.

For the first time at the Moon, a laser beam was transmitted and reflected between an orbiting NASA spacecraft and an Oreo-sized device on ISRO’s (Indian Space Research Organisation) Vikram lander on the lunar surface. The successful experiment opens the door to a new style of precisely locating targets on the Moon’s surface.

At 3 p.m. EST on Dec. 12, 2023, NASA’s LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) pointed its laser altimeter instrument toward Vikram. The lander was 62 miles, or 100 kilometers, away from LRO, near Manzinus crater in the Moon’s South Pole region, when LRO transmitted laser pulses toward it. After the orbiter registered light that had bounced back from a tiny NASA retroreflector aboard Vikram, NASA scientists knew their technique had finally worked.

Sending laser pulses toward an object and measuring how long it takes the light to bounce back is a commonly used way to track the locations of Earth-orbiting satellites from the ground. But using the technique in reverse – to send laser pulses from a moving spacecraft to a stationary one to determine its precise location – has many applications at the Moon, scientists say.

“We’ve showed that we can locate our retroreflector on the surface from the Moon’s orbit,” said Xiaoli Sun, who led the team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, that developed the retroreflector on Vikram as part of a partnership between NASA and ISRO. “The next step is to improve the technique so that it can become routine for missions that want to use these retroreflectors in the future.”

Only 2 inches, or 5 centimeters, wide, NASA’s tiny but mighty retroreflector, called a Laser Retroreflector Array, has eight quartz-corner-cube prisms set into a dome-shaped aluminum frame. The device is simple and durable, scientists say, requiring neither power nor maintenance, and can last for decades. Its configuration allows the retroreflector to reflect light coming in from any direction back to its source.

Retroreflectors can be used for many applications in science and exploration and, indeed, have been in use at the Moon since the Apollo era. By reflecting light back to Earth, the suitcase-size retroreflectors revealed that the Moon is moving away from our planet at a rate of 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) per year.

This new generation of tiny retroreflectors has even more applications than their larger predecessors. On the International Space Station, they’re used as precision markers that help cargo-delivery spacecraft dock autonomously.

In the future, they could guide Artemis astronauts to the surface in the dark, for example, or mark the locations of spacecraft already on the surface, helping astronauts or uncrewed spacecraft land next to them.

But there’s more work to do before retroreflectors can light up the Moon. The biggest hurdle to their immediate adoption is that LRO’s altimeter, which has operated for 13 years beyond its primary mission, is the only laser instrument orbiting the Moon for now. But the instrument wasn’t designed to pinpoint a target; since 2009, the altimeter – called LOLA - has been responsible for mapping the Moon’s topography to prepare for missions to the surface.

“We would like LOLA to point to this Oreo-sized target and hit it every time, which is hard,” said Daniel Cremons, a NASA Goddard scientist who works with Sun. It took the altimeter eight tries to contact Vikram’s retroreflector.

LOLA works by dispatching five laser beams toward the Moon and measuring how long it takes each one to bounce back (the quicker the light returns, the less distance between LOLA and the surface, and thus the higher the elevation in that area). Each laser beam covers an area 32 feet, or 10 meters, wide, from a 62-mile, or 100-kilometer, altitude. Because there are large gaps between the beams, there is only a small chance that the laser pulse can contact a retroreflector during each pass of the lunar orbiter over the lander.

Altimeters are great for detecting craters, rocks, and boulders to create global elevation maps of the Moon. But they aren’t ideal for pointing to within one-hundredth of a degree of a retroreflector, which is what’s required to consistently achieve a ping. A future laser that slowly and continuously rakes the surface without any gaps in coverage would help tiny retroreflectors meet their potential.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration has released new images of M87*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87, using data from observations taken in April 2018. With the participation of the newly commissioned Greenland Telescope and a dramatically improved recording rate across the array, the 2018 observations give us a view of the source independent from the first observations in 2017. A recent paper published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics presents new images from the 2018 data that reveal a familiar ring the same size as the one observed in 2017. This bright ring surrounds a deep central depression, “the shadow of the black hole,” as predicted by general relativity. Excitingly, the brightness peak of the ring has shifted by about 30º compared to the images from 2017, which is consistent with our theoretical understanding of variability from turbulent material around black holes.

“A fundamental requirement of science is to be able to reproduce results,” says Dr. Keiichi Asada, an associate research fellow at Academia Sinica Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan. “Confirmation of the ring in a completely new data set is a huge milestone for our collaboration and a strong indication that we are looking at a black hole shadow and the material orbiting around it.”

The prospect of Trump, who is the front-runner to gain the Republican nomination in the upcoming election,winning a second term in the White House has been a hot topicat the gathering of political and business leaders in Switzerland this week.

“What’s the way out for him? He either winds up in prison or he winds up in power, he’s not going off on some beach somewhere and retiring.”

Most polling in recent months has put Trump ahead of Biden across key swing states, though numbers published last week by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, in partnership with The Telegraph, showed those leads narrowing in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Soros insisted the incumbent president still has a “pretty good map,” and backedBiden to hold onto Arizona and Georgia, where he claimed the particular brand of “extremism” promoted by Trump and his allies is considered “really toxic” to many voters.

“But, actually, if you want to look at one state which willreally test where the election is, it’s Wisconsin, because if Joe Biden’s able to win Wisconsin, it should mean thathe’s won Pennsylvania and Michigan,” added Soros, son of billionaire philanthropist and Open Society Foundations founder George Soros.
