New protest wave sweeps through Germany (PHOTOS)

Joint action by farmers and train drivers has brought transportation in many cities to a near halt

Train drivers in Germany have gone on a large-scale strike, with major transportation disruptions across the country expected to last for several days. The situation is complicated by a similar campaign launched in December by German farmers, who are blocking roads to protest against the government’s agricultural policies.

The Deutsche Bahn (DB) rail operator warned on Monday of “massive restrictions” on its long-distance, regional and commuter routes from Wednesday to Friday due to a strike by Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivfuhrer (GDL), the country’s railway union. It advised passengers to “refrain from unnecessary travel,” noting that only a “very limited basic train service” will be available during this period.

On Tuesday evening, freight transport drivers were the first to begin the protest action, with their passenger sector counterparts joining them at 2am on Wednesday. As a result, around 80% of usual long-distance services were canceled.

Photos from several German cities, including Berlin and Hamburg, show empty platforms that would usually be packed with commuters.

GDL said the strikes hinged on DB’s failure to address its “core legitimate demands.” The union has called for a reduction of working hours from 38 to 35, as well as for a wage increase of €555 ($607) per month, on top of a lump sum payment of €3,000 to compensate for inflation.

DB has rejected the working time demand, saying it would have to hire 10,000 new employees in an extremely tight labor market to fill the gap. However, it offered to negotiate on expanding existing working time models. It also proposed an 11% wage increase and a one-time €2,850 inflation compensation bonus.

The rail strike comes as farmers across Germany started a week-long nationwide protest on Monday, blocking roads and highways with tractors. The uproar stems from the government’s plans to reduce or scrap tax breaks for the agriculture sector, as well as cutting diesel subsidies.

Trump Slams Judge Engoron to His Face in Court after Being Blocked from Speaking

President Donald Trump reportedly unloaded on radical Judge Arthur Engoron during the final day in court for Democrat New York Attorney General Letitia James's politically motivated civil "fraud" trial against the 45th POTUS.'

Trump ripped into the judge presiding over his civil business “fraud” trial during closing arguments on Thursday.

He blasted Engoron in the courtroom even after the judge refused to allow Trump to give his own summation.

As Slay News reported, Trump requested that he make his own closing argument during the trial.

However, Engoron barred Trump from speaking.

On Wednesday, Engoron told one of Trump’s attorneys that since he did not hear from Trump’s team “by the third extended deadline (noon today), I assume that Mr. Trump will not agree to the reasonable, lawful limits that I have imposed as a precondition to giving a closing statement above and beyond those given by his attorneys, and that, therefore, he will not be speaking in court tomorrow.”

But during closing arguments, Trump spoke up anyway.

He reportedly launched into a six-minute-long speech where he slammed both Engoron and NY AGJames, according to the Associated Press.

Trump reportedly blasted the judge after his lawyer, Christopher Kise, asked him once more if his client could speak.

When Engoron asked Trump if we would abide by the specific guidelines proposed to him earlier, Trump began his speech.

“This is a fraud on me,” Trump said.

“What’s happened here, sir, is a fraud on me.

He later accused the judge of not listening to him before Engoron told Trump’s lawyers to “control your client.”

He then gave the 45th president a minute to speak before adjourning for lunch.

“We have a situation where I am an innocent man,” Trump added.

“I’m being persecuted by someone running for office and I think you have to go outside the bounds.”

Before going into the courtroom on Thursday, Trump stood alongside his lawyers outside and called the trial “election interference at the highest level.”

Trump alleges that election interference is “in coordination with the White House and Joe Biden.”

“It is indeed a terrible witchhunt,” Trump said.

“As you know, I want to speak, I want to give a summation.

“At this moment, the judge is not letting me make the summation because I’ll bring up things that he doesn’t want to hear.

“It’s a very unfair trial. Nobody has ever seen anything like this.”

Trump’s civil business fraud trial began after career Democrat James filed a lawsuit against the 45th president and three of his children in September 2022.

The suit alleges that Trump, along with Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump, misled the value of his company’s assets in financial statements “over 200 times in 10 years.”

Initially, James sought $250 million in fines for Trump.

However, James is now asking the judge to fine Trump more than $370 million in “damages,” according to a brief filed last week.

There are no victims cited in the case and the bank asserts that it was more than happy with its dealings with Trump.

A complaint has just been filed by the people of Colorado against Disgraced sellout “lawyer” Jenna Ellis, who has flipped to be one of Fani Willis’s witnesses against President Trump in Fulton County, Georgia.

If you recall, Ellis scammed and stole $220,000 in donations from Trump supporters with the promise that she would fight her indictment, but instead, she is now working with Fani Willis to take Trump down.

Jenna Ellis is now Facing disbarment, amongst other things as has been laid out in this new complaint.

The complaint accuses Ellis of violating rules that prohibit attorneys from being convicted of felonies, committing crimes, “engaging in professional conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation” and aiding and abetting false statements.

Judicial Watch: Records Show Joe Biden Used Email Alias in Correspondence which Included Hunter Biden and James Biden; Signed Off on Brief Cessation of Secret Service Protection for Hunter and Natalie Biden

Judicial Watch announced today it received 426 pages of records in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that show then-Vice President Joe Biden’s use of an email alias to correspond with family members, including son Hunter and brother James; and that Joe Biden signed off on the cessation of Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden and Beau Biden’s daughter Natalie during an August 2016 trip to Kosovo.

These emails include messages to Jim and Hunter Biden regarding the then-vice president’s schedule and meetings. Some emails show Biden using the alias: robinware456@gmail.com.

The emails also show that Hunter and Jim Biden accompanied Joe Biden on taxpayer-funded trips; and then-Vice President Biden in December 2009 emailing an aide after he forgot the password to his West Wing computer.

The emails were uncovered in a Judicial Watch Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the National Archives for Biden communications (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. National Archives (No. 1:23-cv-01432)).

The records show that Hunter Biden used an email address (hbiden@rosemontseneca.com) from his now-dissolved firm Rosemont Seneca Partners.

The records also show that James Biden used an email address (jbiden@lionhallgp.com) tied to his consulting firm Lion Hall, which had been the subject of an FBI bribery investigation in the 1990s.

There were 210 Biden vice presidential email messages produced related to the lawsuit. Most were redacted due to Presidential Records Act (PRA) restrictions and applicable FOIA exemptions, which specify what material may be released to the public.

Previously, Judicial Watch released five pages of records that show then-Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter received a May 26, 2016, email detailing a scheduled “8:45 am prep for a 9 am phone call with Pres Poroshenko,” who was the president of Ukraine. Joe Biden’s email address is the alias robert.l.peters@pci.gov, Hunter Biden’s email account is disclosed as hbiden@rosemontseneca.com. (Hunter Biden was on the board of the controversial Ukrainian firm Burisma at the time.)

The new records include an August 18, 2016, email sent from his Rosemont Seneca email address to Secret Service Assistant Director of the Office of Investigations Jeremy Sherida, Hunter Biden writes: “Thank you. Both the Vice President and I sign off on the agreed upon requested interruption in protection for Natalie and Hunter.” The interruption in protection was from August 18 to August 22, 2016, during their trip to Kosovo and was to resume up their return to Washington, D.C., on August 22, 2016. The Biden family was in Kosovo where the country erected a statue of and named a highway after Beau Biden. It is not known where Hunter Biden and Natalie Biden went without their Secret Service detail.

A Sea of Red and White: As Much as 200K in Warsaw Demand Release of Polish Political Prisoners – President Duda Vows to Pardon the 2 MPs AGAIN

Tens of thousands of Polish citizens have taken to the streets of capital Warsaw to demand the release of the two ‘political prisoners’ held illegally by Globalist Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The dramatic arrest of the two MPs – former Home Affairs Minister Mariusz Kamiński and his deputy Maciej Wąsik – inside the Presidential Palace, have set fire to the tense political situation in the Eastern European country.

Both men had already been pardoned by President Andrej Duda.

Kaminski has begun a HUNGER STRIKE, and the considerable portion of the population that supports the nationalist PiS party – the most voted in the last election – is showing in no uncertain terms just how dangerous is the game played by former European Commission President, PM Tusk.

MSM has a clear pro-Tusk bias, but could not fail to report such a massive movement. Reuters underplays the number of people describing it as ‘thousands of opposition supporters’, but later in the piece describes how ‘a sea of red and white Polish flags stretched back from the parliament’. That sounds like tens of thousands, maybe more. Organizers estimate as much as 200k protesters.

The demonstration also denounced the attempted takeover of state media by Tusk – a move partially blocked by a Polish court.

“The march reflects mounting tensions in the country as the new pro-European Union coalition government led by Donald Tusk tries to undo the policies of the previous nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party administration.

It also came as President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, said on Thursday he had started proceedings to pardon the two ministers in the last government who were jailed this week for abuse of power, escalating his stand-off with the new government. ‘We have to win this great battle for a sovereign, independent Poland’, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski told the crowd.”

The march culminated in front of the offices of state TV. News channel TVP Info was taken off air before returning in a much altered format.

“The announcement by Duda that he would pardon the two ex-ministers was the latest twist in a saga that has left the country in political turmoil since power passed to Tusk’s coalition after October’s election.”

Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corp. chartered the tanker, which was transporting 140,00 tons of Iraqi SOMO crude. The vessel was en route to Aliaga in western Turkey.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) authority reported hours ago a vessel was boarded by "4-5 armed unauthorized persons" about 50 miles east of Sohar, Oman.

"Unauthorized boarders are reported to be wearing military-style black uniforms with black masks. CSO reports that the vessel has altered its course towards Iranian territorial waters, and communications with the vessel have been lost," UKMTO said.

Reports from the border indicate Gov. Greg Abbott has taken over riverfront land and is denying federal officials access to the illegal crossing point near the international bridge in Eagle Pass.

Shelby Park has been a hotspot for illegal crossings, and now the State of Texas under the governor’s emergency powers has seized all city property along the riverfront.

According to NewsNation reporter Ali Bradley, “All access to the property is limited to state authority only. Border Patrol will be permitted to enter the property to remove their equipment and supplies—Agents will not have access to the area unless there is a medical emergency.”

All individuals who cross the border illegally into Shelby Park are expected to be cited for criminal trespass—which can include a punishment of 180 days in jail if found guilty.

The governor’s spokesperson told Bradley, “Texas is holding the line at our southern border with miles of additional razor wire and anti-climb barriers to deter and repel the record-high levels of illegal immigration invited by President Biden’s reckless open border policies.”

“Texas will continue to deploy Texas National Guard soldiers, DPS troopers, and more barriers, utilizing every tool and strategy to respond to President Biden’s ongoing border crisis,” according to the governor’s office.

However, Executive Director of Citizens for Renewing America Wade Miller says this is just more of the same from Abbott, “Abbott’s actions are often innovative in their approach, but they’re the bare minimum to be able to say that he’s doing something new without actually moving the needle.”

“We just don’t have time to pull around and so Abbott needs to make take some decisive steps and stop dipping his toe in the water,” Miller told Texas Scorecard. “It’s provocative to no real end—like what’s he going to do? Where’s he going to put 5,000 people if you arrest them? He’s not going to put them in jail. They don’t have that much jail space in Eagle Pass.”

“The only real thing that’s going to change the narrative here is if he actually starts taking the additional step of returning these people back into Mexico under an invasion declaration authority,” said Miller.

“I’m not opposed to long term litigation strategy, but it has to be done concurrent to more concrete steps. And if he wants to legally separate these out in different memos so that they’re all legally isolated things that aren’t all tied together and don’t get summarily rejected by some random leftist then that’s fine, but he can’t just do this all for some long term legal strategy. That just won’t work. We don’t have time for it. The problem is critical. It’s there. He has to take decisive and robust steps right now. And he’s talked about it but he has not actually done anything.”

The Army is mourning the unexpected loss of a young soldier-athlete who had her sights set on an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling this summer.

Spc. Estrella “Star” Dorado Marin, 21, died Jan. 3 in Thornton, Colo., of complications from emergency surgery, the Army said in a statement Wednesday.

She had experienced numbness in her upper extremities from blood clots, her family told the Army.

Dorado Marin, whose nickname came from the English translation of her first name, enlisted in the Army in 2020 as a fuel supply specialist and later joined the service’s World Class Athlete Program as a freestyle wrestler.

British Columbia’s Interior Health (IH) has completely withdrawn COVID rapid antigen tests (RAT) from its facilities, citing an internal memo that called them unreliable.

"As such COVID-19 RAT testing can no longer be used to direct clinical care or infection prevention and control measures," it said January 8, "and must be discontinued immediately in Interior Health affiliated emergency rooms, hospitals, long-term care facilities [and] outpatient settings."

Dr. Brian Conway, the Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre’s medical director, acknowledged the PCR test is far more accurate. "[The PCR] test […] we have always known is more sensitive and more reliable," he said.

At the end of 2021, the Trudeau Liberals purchased rapid antigen tests in bulk to aid provinces in their pandemic response. However, fewer and fewer people have used them to test for the respiratory virus.

In January 2022, Canadians raised concerns about the probability of false-positive results in rapid antigen tests.

Researchers from the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management uncovered false positives from 462 of 1,103 rapid antigen tests that had data from a PCR test to compare against.

They published their peer-reviewed findings in The Journal of the American Medical Association compiled from over 537 workplaces between January and October 2021 that attribute the false positives to probable issues from the manufacture.

The CPI increased 0.3% in December – up 3.4% year-over-year – “hotter than expected” – and Joe Biden’s incompetent econ advisor said the numbers are “encouraging.”

Prices that consumers pay for a variety of goods and services rose more than expected in December, according to a Labor Department measure Thursday that shows inflation still holding a grip on the U.S. economy.

The consumer price index increased 0.3% for the month, higher than the 0.2% estimate at a time when most economists and policymakers see inflationary pressures easing. On a 12-month basis, the CPI closed 2023 up 3.4%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a year-over-year reading of 3.2%.

By comparison, the annual CPI gain in December 2022 was about 6.4%.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, the so-called core CPI also rose 0.3% for the month and 3.9% from a year ago, compared with respective estimates of 0.3% and 3.8%. The year-over-year core reading was the lowest since May 2021.

Much of the increase came due to rising shelter costs. The category rose 0.5% for the month and accounted for more than half the core CPI increase. On annual basis, shelter costs increased 6.2%, or about two-thirds of the rise in inflation.

CNBC’s Rick Santelli went off after it was reported the CPI index shot up.

The specifics of the question surrounded if President Trump could order SEAL Team Six to assassinate an American citizen (or presidential candidate) and if Absolute Immunity would apply.

President Trump’s attorney was prepared to answer the hypothetical question with a “qualified yes“; however, unfortunately the lawyer was not prepared to give Judge Pan a real-world example of this action that recently took place. It’s not a hypothetical; it was done recently. President Obama did exactly this.

CITATION – “Anwar al-‘Awlaqī; (April 1971 – 30 September 2011) was an American Islamic scholar and lecturer who was killed in 2011 in Yemen by a U.S. government drone strike ordered by President Barack Obama. Al-Awlaki became the first U.S. citizen to be targeted and killed by a drone strike from the U.S government.

President Barack Obama had absolute immunity for ordering the intentional killing of American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaqi. The issue of him being a presidential candidate is a non sequitur.

If Presidents did not have absolute immunity, or if the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals removes absolute immunity from President Trump, then Barack Obama can immediately be charged and arrested for killing al-Awlaqi. There is no statute of limitations for murder. Yes, this is the cold truth of the matter.

Additionally, 16-year-old American Citizen, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, was killed in the same military assassination. Abdulrahman, a child, was standing next to his father; he was never accused of any wrongdoing; he was never charged with any unlawful conduct; he was an innocent bystander.

In 2011 when the Obama administration was questioned about killing the teenager, White House Spokesperson Robert Gibbs said, “I would suggest that you should have a far more responsible father if they are truly concerned about the well-being of their children. I don’t think becoming an al-Qaeda jihadist terrorist is the best way to go about doing your business.”

If the DC Appeals Court removes “absolute immunity” in order to prosecute President Donald J Trump, then the next administration can formally charge President Barack Obama with the specific and unlawful killing of an American citizen, with malice aforethought and specific intent to kill; ie homicide. Additional charges of manslaughter for the killing of the 16-year-old son are easily justified.

There is no statute of limitations for murder.

YEMEN – As the U.S. and “coalition partners” begin military engagement against the Houthi rebels, no one in Western media will draw contrast to the State Dept earlier this year sending another $444 million via USAID (a CIA front group) to Yemen. Factually, the U.S. has spent $5.4 billion, yes that’s with a “b”, in Yemen through the State Dept {link}.

We are now going to begin military operations against elements within Yemen as part of something called “Operation Prosperity Guardian,” a new international effort deal with Houthi threats.” As this war front is initiated, ask yourself what we spent $5.4 billion to achieve in Yemen, if we are now forced to use the U.S. military.

Given the scale of dedicated U.S. naval and air military resources in the region, direct engagement with Yemeni “terrorists” was always certain. This will expand the overall conflict zone and pull the U.S. into ancillary combat missions. Please pay no attention to the State Dept/CIA assets on the ground in Yemen who are likely coordinating the appearance of direct targeting from the “terrorists.” Yeah, we do that.

As a result of the USA (and any ally stupid enough to believe the effort) shadowboxing ourselves in Yemen, Iran and the various proxies will likely not respond there. However, U.S. military personnel deployed in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq will likely come under fire.

MOLDOVA – Watch this landscape closely.

Ukraine is losing badly, and U.S. led NATO efforts need to change the dynamic. We can anticipate Moldova playing a key role in what comes next.

Watch out for the CIA, DoS, influence over Western NATO allies to create a battlefront against Russia using Moldova. Hey, those pesky EU farmers, truckers and organized railway workers are a bit problematic. We can nip that issue if we create a larger regional crisis.

The basic premise would be for some kind of kinetic action to take place on the Moldova/Ukraine -v- Russia conflict zone (Odessa region), likely created by organized CIA operations, that will then provide the predicate for a second and more direct NATO front against Russia to take the pressure away from direct engagement in Ukraine.

Again, USAID operations (non-pretending, the CIA) have been all over Moldova for the past several months. Something is going to trigger there, and Vladimir Putin can also see it, see the Lavrov statement from November 30.

The Texas Department of Public Safety notified Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas on Wednesday that Shelby Park was being taken over by an emergency order by Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The park covers 47 acres and is right next to a portion of the Rio Grande River. This will give DPS officers control over the area to help stop illegals from crossing into the U.S. The take over is for an indefinite period of time with DPS having total control of the area.

“All access to the property is limited to state authority only. Border Patrol will be permitted to enter the property to remove their equipment and supplies—Agents will not have access to the area unless there is a medical emergency.” – NewsNation reporter Ali Brady said.

The US and UK conducted joint operations to bomb Houthi infrastructure in Sana'a on Thursday.

Shortly after taking office in 2021, President Joe Biden reversed President Donald Trump's designation of the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis as a terror group.

In so doing, Biden spoke about the need to deal with the humanitarian disaster in Yemen at the time. The Trump administration believed that the Houthis had used violent campaigns to destabilize the region. The Houthis took over the Yemeni capital Sana'a in 2014 along with much of the northwestern region of the country. The US and UK conducted joint operations to bomb Houthi infrastructure in Sana'a on Thursday.

Biden claimed that reversing the designation would prevent a humanitarian crisis.

"Our action is due entirely to the humanitarian consequences of this last-minute designation from the prior administration, which the United Nations and humanitarian organizations have since made clear would accelerate the world’s worst humanitarian crisis," a Biden official said at the time.

"The designation did not impact the Houthis in any practical way, but it stopped food and other critical aid from being delivered inside Yemen and would have prevented effective political negotiation," said Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy in praise of Biden's move.

Trump had branded the group as a foreign terror group in order to "deter further malign activity by the Iranian regime," per then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The designation went into effect only one day before Trump ceded the White House to Biden in January 2021.

"If Ansarallah," the formal name for the Houthis, "did not behave like a terrorist organization, we would not designate it as one," Pompeo said. Three of the leaders of the Houthis, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, Abd al-Khaliq Badr al-Din al-Houthi, and Abdullah Yahya al Hakim, were also designated as terrorists. The group are Shiite Islamists.

Classifying them as terrorists prevented any of them from entering the US, made it illegal for any Americans to aid them with "material support or resources," and made it illegal for anyone to do business with the terror group.

The UN was displeased by the designation, saying that it put Yemen " in imminent danger of the worst famine the world has seen for decades."

"I urge all those with influence to act urgently on these issues to stave off catastrophe," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "and I also request that everyone avoids taking any action that could make the already dire situation even worse."

"We are planning to put in place measures to reduce their impact on certain humanitarian activity and imports into Yemen," Pompeo said.

Texas state officials on Wednesday took control of a riverfront public park in Eagle Pass as part of the state’s effort to arrest illegal aliens under Operation Lonestar. Federal officials will be prohibited from the site, where large groups of illegal aliens frequently enter the U.S., as Texas officials argue that they actively encourage unlawful immigration.

Texas has frequently clashed with the Biden Administration over border control, with the administration asserting that it has full control over enforcement. Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to sidestep the president with a number of border control measures, however, including the construction of barriers and using Texas law enforcement personnel to arrest illegal aliens.

This has resulted in a number of competing lawsuits with neither side showing any signs of slowing down.

On Thursday, the stand-off escalated when Texas law enforcement assets and national guard troops seized control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass.

“The Texas Military Department confirms the TX National Guard has seized control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass (city property where mass illegal crossings are), and is restricting Border Patrol from accessing the area, saying the Feds ‘perpetuate illegal crossings,'” reported Fox News border correspondent Bill Melugin. “This is the area where Border Patrol has been cutting TX razor wire. Razor wire and fences are now deployed to block the area off from the public and federal government.”

In a statement of their own, the Texas Military Department stated that it has maintained a security presence at Shelby Park since 2021. “The current posture is to prepare for future illegal immigrant surges and to restrict access to organizations that perpetuate illegal immigrant crossings in the park and greater Eagle Pass area,” the statement continued, according to Melugin.

The department did not disclose how long the park will remained close, meaning that planned festivals and other activities scheduled for this spring could be postponed.

“Texas will continue to deploy Texas National Guard soldiers, DPS troopers, and more barriers, utilizing every tool and strategy to respond to President Biden’s ongoing border crisis,” Renae Eze, a spokesperson for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, said in a statement to the New York Post.

Billionaire Chen Tianqiao, founder, chairman and CEO of Shanda Group, owns around 200,000 acres of land in Oregon, according to Land Report. His involvement with the CCP ranges from membership to executive roles in CCP-linked organizations, the DCNF reports following a review of Chinese-language media reports

In 2015, Chen acquired 198,000 acres in Oregon, according to Land Report. The $85 million purchase made the Chinese national the 82nd-largest property owner in the U.S. and the second-largest foreign U.S. land owner, Bloomberg reported, second only to a Canadian family who owns over 1 million acres of Maine.

Oregon’s Bull Springs Skyline Forest accounts for approximately 33,000 of Chen’s acreage, according to Land Report. The forest is located west of Bend, Oregon, and is home to springs, creeks, timberland and wildlife, according to the Bull Springs Skyline Forest website.

Oregon Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer said she was “deeply concerned that individuals tied to the Chinese Communist Party are buying up timberland, which is one of our most precious and finite resources.” -Daily Caller

"Foreign ownership of United States lands is a serious problem that has rightfully sparked unease among farmers, ranchers and foresters across the country," said Chavez-DeRemer.

The taxpayers of Maine have just funded the construction of several brand new apartment buildings for people who illegally crossed our border.

People who were lucky enough to get these homes will live there RENT FREE for two years while they apply for work permits.

Town of Brunswick celebrates new apartments for unhoused asylum seekers

For years, the former naval air station base in Brunswick has been undergoing renovations. Businesses have slowly moved in, and housing developments are continuing to pop up on once-barren streets. That includes new apartments that, for the next couple of years, will be serving asylum seekers.

On Monday, dozens of people gathered at Brunswick Landing to celebrate 60 new apartment units going up in five buildings. Twenty-four of them are already complete. These units are designed to house asylum seekers, as they wait to receive work permits. That process can often take a while, since asylum seekers can’t even file for a permit until at least six months after filing their initial asylum applications.

This program is happening through the Maine State Housing Authority. MaineHousing will essentially pay the rent for these asylum seekers for up to two years. After that, they will be converted to a mix of market-rate and affordable housing, unless the state says the program needs to be extended.

Tesla’s stock drops as reported China price cuts signal continued economic concerns

Tesla Inc. reportedly has reduced prices on two models in China, where it faces stiff competition from rivals such as BYD Co. Ltd. and is grappling with a continued difficult economic backdrop.

Shares of Tesla were falling more than 3% in premarket trading Friday. Investors were also grappling with news of a temporary shutdown of production facilities in Germany.

Tesla TSLA, -2.87% cut starting prices on its Model 3 sedan by 5.9% and its Model Y sport-utility vehicle to 2.8%, according to reports Friday from Reuters, Bloomberg News and social-media accounts tracking the automaker.

China’s economy has struggled to fully get back on its feet after the global pandemic, with consumers slow to spend even amid government stimulus efforts. Official data released Friday showed consumer prices dropping 0.3% in December for a third straight month of declines.

Shares of Tesla are down over 8% so far this year — the stock has seen just one positive session since Dec. 28. Those losses come as the automaker reported forecast-beating fourth-quarter deliveries at the start of the month, but was knocked off its pedestal as the world’s leading EV seller by Berkshire Hathaway-backed BYD 002594, -0.46%.

China’s EV market is largely dominated by local companies, with Tesla not only facing BYD , but Li Auto Inc. 2015, -3.52%, Nio Inc. NIO, -0.13% and Xpeng Inc. XPEV, -1.21% as well.

Geopolitical tensions hit EV maker

Separately Tesla appears to have also been dragged into the Middle East conflict, with media reports saying the EV maker will halt the majority of its auto production near Berlin for two weeks due to “a lack of components.”

“The armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the associated shifts in transport routes between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope are also having an impact on production in Grünheide,” Tesla said in a statement on Thursday, according to Reuters and other media outlets.

The Red Sea is a crucial shipping avenue for cargo travel through the Suez Canal, with some $1 trillion in goods estimated to pass through it each year.

Many shipping companies have been forced to reroute due to ongoing attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels that were launched after the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October. The alternate route is longer and often incurs more costs for companies involved, while global shipping rates have been spiking due to those attacks.

Analysts at Baird surmised that the Berlin factory produces 5,000 to 7,000 vehicles a week, “due to the factory not always reaching full utilization and other factors.” The shutdown would result in a 10,000 to 14,000 hit to first-quarter deliveries, said analysts Ben Kallo and David Sunderland in a note.

“While the length of the conflict in the region is uncertain, we are wary of further impacts to [Tesla’s] supply chain and/or shipping routes for international deliveries,” they added. Specifically, they note that Tesla’s Shanghai factory deliveries to several regions, including Australia and Europe.

“No delays have been cited, however, we speculate that disruptions in the Red Sea may lead to longer wait times as supply chains are rerouted,” they said.

MarketWatch has reached out to Tesla for comment.

In an extremely rare natural phenomenon, two different cicada broods will explode from the ground at the same time this year.

Some species of cicadas are periodical, spending most of their lives underground in their nymph life stage before emerging from the ground as adults to feed and mate. Millions of cicadas within the same brood can emerge at the same time, but this occurs only once every13or17years.

One brood—named Brood XIII—emerges every 17 years, while another, named Brood XIX, emerges every 13 years. This year, they will emerge at the same time, for the first time in 221 years.

Hannah Fry, a science communicator and mathematician, said in an Instagram video describing the phenomenon: "There's one type that lives for 13 years, then there's another one that lives for 17 years. It spends almost all of that time underground. The thing is, for extra drama, all of the cicadas are completely synchronized with one another, so every single 13-year-old cicada emerges from the ground, simultaneously flies around, has a massive party, sheds their exoskeletons, makes a massive mess, then dies."

Fry said they do this because it helps to evade predators.

"There's so many of them simultaneously that there's no way the predators could eat all of them, so a massive proportion of them survive to the next generation," she said. "Thirteen years and 17 years are special because they're both prime numbers, which means it's really hard for a predator to have a cycle that syncs up with them.

"Also, they almost never synchronize with each other—13 and 17—kind of missing each other, except for once every 221 years—13 times 17—when they'll all appear simultaneously. The last time this happened was in 1803," Fry said.

The United Nations healthcare agency — the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) — has given transgender activists a majority of the seats in a panel that is drafting healthcare policies for children.

One of the supposed experts displays a “Be Gay, Do Crimes” tattoo.

Eleven members of the W.H.O.’s 21-member panel have no formal medical training, seven are transgender, and just ten have a medical background, according to a report by Daily Mail.

One of them is reportedly a controversial Canadian trans activist who has a strong influence on the Chinese app TikTok and says puberty blockers should be prescribed to all children, regardless of their gender identity, so they can “choose” their gender rather than being assigned one by society.

Another of the W.H.O.’s committee members says that transitioning causes no health problems and claims the only “actual side effects” of getting a sex change are a “significantly improved quality of life … and trans joy.”

The rest of the panel members are a mixture of activists, social justice advocates, human rights lawyers, STD researchers, and policy advisers, Daily Mail reports.

Another committee member, Ashley — a biological male who identifies as female and goes by the pronouns “they/them that bitch” — has a tattoo that reads, “Be Gay, Do Crimes.”

Ashley, who has co-written a study that claims puberty blockers and hormone therapies “ought to be treated as the default option” for children with gender dysphoria, has a significant following on TikTok where he calls for mental health checks on trans children to be scrapped before they are given puberty blockers and hormone drugs.

“Is there any reason to ask people to go through a lengthy and complex gender assessment in order to access gender-affirming care, or is that useless and should the time best be put in supporting decision-making,” Ashley reportedly said.

“And what our article concludes is that there’s really no evidence that gender assessments work — it’s just a lengthier process for no real reason,” he added. “Gender assessments are really an unnecessary form of gatekeeping that trans communities have been opposing for a while.”

Meanwhile, W.H.O. spokesperson Tarik Jašarević insists the guidelines on trans issues would focus on “adults only” and not the use of hormones, suppressants and surgeries on children.

“WHO guidelines are always based on balancing of available evidence, human rights principles, consideration of harms and benefits and inputs of end users and beneficiaries,” Jašarević said.

Nonetheless, some W.H.O. committee members are vocal about their support for letting children — some as young as 13 — undergo such medical procedures.

Reem Alsalem, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on violence against women, told Daily Mail that the new W.H.O. panel is too “one-sided” and that she believes the committee contains “significant unmanaged conflicts of interest.”

“Stakeholders whose views differ from those held by transgender activist organizations do not appear to have been invited,” Alsalem said.

“Such stakeholders include experts from European public health authorities who have taken the lead on developing an evidence-based and consequently cautious approach to youth gender transitions (eg England, Sweden and Finland),” she added.

Meanwhile, the W.H.O. group will set global guidelines for the ways that healthcare workers around the world can increase access “and utilization of quality and respectful health services by trans and gender-diverse people.”

“The WHO panel is made up mostly of social justice and human rights lawyers who believe the gender affirmative approach is the only option,” Stella O’Malley, psychotherapist and executive director of Genspect, told Daily Mail.

“[They] will determine care guidelines for trans people, yet they do not have anyone to represent critical balance on their panel,” she added. “The gender affirmative approach is presumed by WHO to be the only way forward and thereby dismisses conventional psychotherapy.”

“This is a narrow minded and heavily biased approach,” O’Malley affirmed. “The WHO are making a grave mistake, they should pause this process and consult with the many professionals who hold different approaches.”

CALL TO DIG INTO THE COLONY HOTEL, KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE

This poast reminds me of the time I stayed in Kennebunkport, Maine, at The Colony Hotel, a place from which the apparently heavily fortified Bush Compound was clearly visible.

The thing about The Colony Hotel that impacted me was that its staff seemed to be all illegal aliens, and all very young.

Very young.

Very, very young, and very brown.

We learned that many of the staff workers were Haitian "immigrants."

Hmmmm.

The odd staff was notable enough the colleagues with whom I was attending a meeting at The Colony Hotel commented repeatedly about how creepy the staff seemed, not because of who the staffers were, but simply because of how YOUNG and how vulnerable they all seemed to be.

My colleagues and I, who traveled there from a fancy Boston office, vowed to never return to The Colony Hotel again. I knew nothing, then, that I know now, but I never forgot that creepy place because there were so many seemingly indentured youths waiting on us, and it felt awful.

Now, knowing moar, I wonder if there were any tunnels leading from The Colony Hotel over to the Bush Compound, where people like Peter Nygard and the Bushes could partake of young, brown, illegal aliens shipped over from The Colony Hotel.
