Doorbell video shows murder suspects posing as energy workers before allegedly killing jewelry store owner

Doorbell footage has been released showing two suspects pretending to be energy workers calling a house in an upscale Detroit neighborhood before they allegedly murdered a 72-year-old jewelry store owner in the basement while his wife was duct-taped.

The chilling footage, released by police, shows the men in high-vis vests and face masks standing outside a home in Rochester Hills, on Thursday at around 10 p.m., hours before the brutal killing took place, police say.

"We’re DTE, we’re checking for gas leaks," one of the men says before displaying his clipboard to the camera while the other suspect appears to keep watch.

DTE Energy is an energy company based in Detroit, Michigan.

Police say the pair were unable to gain entry on Thursday and returned on Friday at around noon and got into the home, located in the 3700 block of Newcastle.

The victim, who has not been identified at the time of this report, brought the men down to his basement to check for a purported gas leak, the victim’s wife told police. When he didn’t return, she assumed he had been kidnapped.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the man’s wife bound with duct tape and then went down to the basement where they found his body.

Police say they do not know how the man died "because of the gruesome nature of the injuries."

"We're not sure the cause, because quite frankly there was so much blood," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, per Fox 2 Detroit. "We're not sure if it was any kind of gunshot or blunt force trauma. We're not sure. … They said there was a gas leak, they let them in and the husband went with them downstairs to check if and where the gas leak may be, and she never saw him again."

It is unclear if items were stolen from the house. The victim owned a jewelry business in Wayne County.

Police say they are looking for two men who were driving a white pick-up truck with orange cones in the truck bed.

One is described as thin and Black, while the other was heavier and described as being Latino.

Police say the pair should be considered dangerous.

"Lots of times when people are small business owners they become a target for assets or cash that sometimes they bring home," Bouchard said. "We’ve seen that in some of the high-end burglaries. So that’s a possibility we’re looking into as well."

Police released a screenshot of the suspect who called to the door on Thursday.

"Here is a picture of one of our homicide suspects," police wrote on Facebook. "Even though they are attempting to conceal their faces and identity, it’s likely if you know this person you will recognize even with the mask. A reward is possible."

Bouchard encouraged residents to be weary of anyone showing up at their homes unexpectedly claiming to be from a utility company or some other business wanting access.

DTE echoed those warnings in a statement and advised customers to request identification badges from workers who call on homes, noting that DTE employees always carry photo identification.

"Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific and tragic event, and we hope the perpetrators are quickly apprehended and brought to justice," the energy company's statement reads, in part, per Fox 2.

"It is important to note that, before DTE arrives at a customer's home for any service visit, we make every effort to contact them in advance, either through a phone call from our call center or via email or text message. We encourage customers to request to see the identification badge before allowing access to their property."

"If customers want to verify a worker’s identity or confirm that a vehicle is an authorized company vehicle, they should call DTE customer service at 800-477-4747 to confirm the validity of the visit."

Mystery Drones Swarmed a U.S. Military Base for 17 Days

U.S. Air Force Gen. Mark Kelly wasn’t sure what to make of reports that a suspicious fleet of unidentified aircraft had been flying over Langley Air Force Base on Virginia’s shoreline.

Kelly, a decorated senior commander at the base, got on a squadron rooftop to see for himself. He joined a handful of other officers responsible for a clutch of the nation’s most advanced jet fighters, including F-22 Raptors.

For several nights, military personnel had reported a mysterious breach of restricted airspace over a stretch of land that has one of the largest concentrations of national-security facilities in the U.S. The show usually starts 45 minutes to an hour after sunset, another senior leader told Kelly.

The first drone arrived shortly. Kelly, a career fighter pilot, estimated it was roughly 20 feet long and flying at more than 100 miles an hour, at an altitude of roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Other drones followed, one by one, sounding in the distance like a parade of lawn mowers.

The drones headed south, across Chesapeake Bay, toward Norfolk, Va., and over an area that includes the home base for the Navy’s SEAL Team Six and Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval port.

Officials didn’t know if the drone fleet, which numbered as many as a dozen or more over the following nights, belonged to clever hobbyists or hostile forces. Some suspected that Russia or China deployed them to test the response of American forces.

Federal law prohibits the military from shooting down drones near military bases in the U.S. unless they pose an imminent threat. Aerial snooping doesn’t qualify, though some lawmakers hope to give the military greater leeway.

Reports of the drones reached President Biden and set off two weeks of White House meetings after the drones first appeared in December last year. Officials from agencies including the Defense Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pentagon’s UFO office joined outside experts to throw out possible explanations as well as ideas about how to respond.

Drone incursions into restricted airspace was already worrying national-security officials. Two months earlier, in October 2023, five drones flew over a government site used for nuclear-weapons experiments. The Energy Department’s Nevada Nuclear Security Site outside Las Vegas detected four of the drones over three days. Employees spotted a fifth.

U.S. officials said they didn’t know who operated the drones in Nevada, a previously unreported incursion, or for what reason. A spokeswoman said the facility has since upgraded a system to detect and counter drones.

The sightings revealed the dilemma of defending against drones on U.S. soil compared with the ease of deploying or battling them abroad. Drones have become a deadly and cost-effective tool of war, capable of carrying surveillance gear, explosives or lethal chemicals. Yet shooting down suspicious aircraft over the U.S. risks disrupting or endangering the lives of Americans the military is sworn to protect.

Early last year, a suspected Chinese spy balloon crammed with electronic surveillance gear floated across the country for eight days, while military leaders waited for it to reach a spot isolated enough to shoot it down safely. After the balloon reached the Southeast coast, an F-22 jet from Langley punctured it with a missile.

Ten months later, the phalanx of drones appeared at Langley.

Over 17 days, the drones arrived at dusk, flew off and circled back. Some shone small lights, making them look like a constellation moving in the night sky—or a science-fiction movie, Kelly said, “‘Close Encounters at Langley.’” They also were nearly impossible to track, vanishing each night despite a wealth of resources deployed to catch them.

Gen. Glen VanHerck, at the time commander of the U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said drones had for years been spotted flying around defense installations. But the nightly drone swarms over Langley, he said, were unlike any past incursion.

VanHerck, who led the military response to the Chinese balloon, ordered jet fighters and other aircraft to fly close enough to glean clues from the drones. He recommended that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorize a full menu of electronic eavesdropping and spycraft to learn more, though the Pentagon is limited in what it can do on U.S. soil.

“If there are unknown objects within North America,” VanHerck said, the job is “to go out and identify them.”

Solving that mystery, even for the world’s pre-eminent superpower, proved easier said than done. Local police were among the first to try.

For two nights, starting on Dec. 6, Hampton, Va., officers chased the drones, by patrol car and on foot, relaying momentary sightings along with information from Langley over police radios: One was seen in the area of Marshall Street or Gosnold’s Hope Park.

Three more appeared to land but returned to the air before officers could reach them. Another looked like it landed offshore. Police finally gave up.

Gen. Kelly, now retired, said the Pentagon was stumped, too.

What would the U.S. do, he asked, “if this happens over the National Mall?”

This account is based on interviews with more than two dozen government officials and other people familiar with the events, as well as police records, court documents and photographs of the drones.

The drone swarm was reported to the Pentagon office of the National Military Command Center, which is responsible for dispersing emergency messages to U.S. military commanders worldwide.

A report went to the White House Situation Room, and the president learned about it in his daily briefing.

U.S. officials didn’t believe hobbyists were flying the drones, given the complexity of the operation. The drones flew in a pattern: one or two fixed-wing drones positioned more than 100 feet in the air and smaller quadcopters, the size of 20-pound commercial drones, often below and flying slower. Occasionally, they hovered.

They came from the north around 6 p.m. to traverse the base, which sits on a peninsula at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, and continued south, beyond the reach of radar. They repeated the pattern and then disappeared, typically by midnight.

Homeland Security Advisor Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall convened the White House brainstorming sessions. One official suggested using electronic signals to jam the drones’ navigation systems. Others cautioned that it might disrupt local 911 emergency systems and Wi-Fi networks.

One suggestion was to use directed energy, an emerging technology, to disable or destroy the drones. An FAA official said such a weapon carried too high a risk for commercial aircraft during the December holiday travel season.

Others suggested that the U.S. Coast Guard shoot nets into the air to capture the drones. An official pointed out that the Coast Guard might not have the authority to use such a weapon in this instance. Besides, the drones were too difficult to track closely.

Langley officials had called on U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships to keep a watch out for the drones with little luck. They were much smaller than military aircraft and didn’t always show up on radar. Military personnel had to recalibrate their radar systems, which were set to ignore anything that resembled a bird.

Analysts learned that the smaller quadcopters didn’t use the usual frequency band available for off-the-shelf commercial drones—more evidence that the drone operators weren’t hobbyists.

Langley officials canceled nighttime training missions, worried about potential collisions with the drone swarm, and moved the F-22 jet fighters to another base. Base residents shared their sightings at the local Starbucks and posted blurry photos of the drones on private Facebook groups.

Intelligence officials spotted a vessel floating in international waters off the coast of Virginia and suspected a connection. Coast Guard crews boarded the vessel but found no computers or other gear to support the hunch.

On Dec. 23, the drones made their last visit.

In January, authorities found a clue they hoped would crack the case.

During a rainy morning on Jan. 6, Fengyun Shi parked a rented Tesla near 65th Street and Huntington Avenue in Newport News, Va., 11 miles from the Langley base. The car was outside a shipyard run by HII, the company that builds nuclear submarines and the Navy’s newest generation of the Ford Class aircraft carrier.

Shi, a student at the University of Minnesota, told nearby residents around midmorning that he was flying a drone that got stuck in a tree. As he tried to free it using his controller a neighbor called Newport News, Va., police. Officers asked Shi why he was flying it in such foul weather, and they told him to call the fire department for help.

Shi instead returned his rental car an hour later and took an Amtrak train to Washington, D.C. The following day, he flew to Oakland, Calif. By chance, the drone fell to the ground that same day and ended up with federal investigators. FBI agents found that Shi had photographed Navy vessels in dry dock, including shots taken around midnight. Some were under construction at the nearby shipyard.

On Jan. 18, federal agents arrested Shi as he was about to board a flight to China on a one-way ticket. Shi told FBI agents he was a ship enthusiast and hadn’t realized his drone crossed into restricted airspace. Investigators weren’t convinced but found no evidence linking him to the Chinese government. They learned he had bought the drone on sale at a Costco in San Francisco the day before he traveled to Norfolk.

U.S. prosecutors charged Shi with unlawfully taking photos of classified naval installations, the first case involving a drone under a provision of U.S. espionage law. The 26-year-old Chinese national pleaded guilty and appeared in federal court in Norfolk on Oct. 2 for sentencing.

Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leonard said he didn’t believe Shi’s story—that he had been on vacation and was flying drones in the middle of the night for fun. “There’s significant holes,” the judge said in court.

“If he was a foreign agent, he would be the worst spy ever known,” said Shi’s attorney, Shaoming Cheng.

“I’m sorry about what happened in Norfolk,” Shi said before he was sentenced to six months in federal prison.

U.S. officials have yet to determine who flew the Langley drones or why.

“This isn’t a tomorrow problem, this is a today problem,” said Tom Karako, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a national-security think tank in Washington. “It’s not an over-there problem—it’s an over-there, over-here and everywhere problem.”

U.S. officials confirmed this month that more unidentified drone swarms were spotted in recent months near Edwards Air Force Base, north of Los Angeles.

After my phone call with an obviously traumatized man on the same day, 8-9-2024, he started telling me the story but had to stop. I responded to him telling him I knew it was difficult. He had told me on the phone things that were horrific. Initially, I was skeptical, I could not find and Indigo Girls concert in March of 95 in Nebraska, when I looked up their tour dates, they were all in Michigan. I would later find I was looking in the wrong place. On 8-10-24 I sent this email and RECORDED doing it.

You can see what I wrote, you can see the submission but most importantly, you can see that I put the Vice President of the United States on notice and if you read the bottom it says "these messages are being captured and archived in compliance with the Presidential Records Act or the Federal Records Act"

Therefore, the VP and the Harris Campaign were put on notice on 8-10-2024 and by law, are required to keep on record the message. The top of the form is required to fill out all personal information. You can see this sit by simply searching "send an email to the Vice President" I also took a screenshot at the end of the video to document the "submission received"

Why is this important? On 8-10 they were put on notice that I had information about an inappropriate relationship. At this point, I thought I would have a hard job proving the Walz relationship still. But something would happen 11 days later that would shock me to my core.

You are probably correct about this. The only reason I even read anything from Austin Steinbart is that I had a friend who did believe him. She was beautiful, smart, and a little bit tricked by that man. She was shot dead recently.

I have been told that there are 10 people that have posted as Q, Something like a Q cell. I know a couple of them. I don't know all of them. I do know for certain that Mr. Steinbart is NOT one of them.

Every man has a hobby or two. Some, like stamp collecting or bowling, reveal very little about his character. Others ... well, let me point you in the direction of Donald Barr, father of former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr.

When Donald wasn’t doing his 9-to-5 work as headmaster at the exclusive New York City private school Dalton, he was busy writing some rather peculiar science fiction. His 1973 novel, "Space Relations: A Slightly Gothic Interplanetary Tale," envisions a universe where the elite indulge in the most depraved of activities.

On the planet Kossar, trafficking, sexual debauchery, and the enslavement of human beings are the norm. The ruling oligarchs treat people as commodities, breeding sex slaves and subjecting them to hormone manipulation to satisfy their perverse desires.

Criminally unqualified

This reads very much like a sci-fi version of Jeffrey Epstein’s real-life empire of exploitation, with all manner of perversions facilitated by his connections to powerful elites.

I mention Epstein for a very specific reason. You see, shortly after writing his rather eccentric novel, Barr inexplicably hired the sexual predator to teach at his school. Epstein, a college dropout with no teaching experience, was criminally unqualified for the role.

Remember, this is the Dalton School we are talking about, one of the most prestigious private institutions in the United States. It has long been a breeding ground for the children of the wealthy and powerful, boasting alumni who go on to attend Ivy League universities and hold influential positions across various fields.

Such an august reputation makes the hiring of an unqualified individual like Epstein all the more baffling — until you realize that dad Donald had worked for the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA. Now, things look a little clearer. But also considerably darker.

Was Jeffrey Epstein an intelligence asset? A better question might be, how could someone without intelligence connections operate with such impunity for so many years?

The formative years

As for Donald’s son, it’s difficult to know where to begin.

The former U.S. attorney general has longstanding ties to the CIA. Early in his career, Bill Barr worked for the CIA while attending law school, specifically in the intelligence analysis and law divisions. Throughout his legal career, Barr maintained connections with the intelligence community, evident during his tenure as attorney general under George H.W. Bush, a former CIA director.

Most readers know that Bill Barr's connection to Epstein traces back to 2019, when, as U.S. attorney general, he oversaw the Justice Department during the pedophile's arrest in Florida. But again, as most readers know, appearances can be very deceptive.

Bosom buddies

Barr and Epstein go way back. As the excellent investigative reporter Nick Bryant has shown with photographic evidence, Barr and Epstein clearly attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts, a renowned arts education institution in northern Michigan, when they were kids. At the very same time.

However, when Bryant looked through the school's yearbook, he found that none of the photos had names listed. A yearbook without names is not just uncommon. It’s unheard of. Something is off.

Interlochen is a prestigious fine arts preparatory school in northern Michigan, and Jeffrey Epstein attended Interlochen “camp” in 1967 as a teenager. Frank Sinatra had to beg for his life after the New York mafia took out a hit on him in the early 1970s, according to a new book.

Mafia Takedown, written by former FBI agent Mike Campi, reveals the singer had so enraged the Genovese crime family that he was summoned to a secret meeting in an East Harlem basement by ruthless mob puppet master 'Fat Tony' Salerno.

It was here that one of Campi's informants, the Genovese 'soldier' George Barone, was instructed to kill Sinatra.

The crooner's ties to the mafia are the stuff of Hollywood legend - so much so that the character of Johnny Fontane in The Godfather is said to have been based on his life.

'Rumors long circulated that he was close to gangsters and that they boosted his career from the outset,' writes Campi - who led one of the most successful attacks on organized crime in the US.

'There is abundant evidence to support this claim.'

For one thing, Sinatra's godfather was the infamous New Jersey wise guy Willie Moretti.

But the connections don't end there.

'Sinatra's name and home address was once found by Italian authorities in Charles 'Lucky' Luciano's possession, and Sinatra was alleged to have once delivered a suitcase stuffed with cash to Luciano in Cuba,' writes Campi.

He adds: 'Sinatra was also good friends with Louie 'Dome' Pacello, a longtime Genovese soldier who operated out of an office above Veniero's Bakery in New York City. Pacello once refused to answer under oath whether he even knew Sinatra, citing his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination.

Enough was enough. Genovese street boss 'Fat Tony' Salerno summoned Sinatra to a meeting in a basement in East Harlem. Barone was told to get there early and, when Tony gave the signal, he was to kill Sinatra.

But when the singer was confronted with his fate, he 'cried like a baby' and begged for his life.

Fat Tony, it seems, took pity on him.

'Sinatra... was reprimanded, and committed not to violate his relationship with the Genovese,' or he would be a dead man.

For now, 'his life was spared.'

Sinatra wasn't the only star to be associated with the mafia.

Sri Lanka busts Chinese cybercrime racket

Sri Lanka's police have arrested 198 Chinese men on suspicion of operating a cybercrime ring from the South Asian nation, a police spokesperson said Sunday.

Deputy Inspector-General Nihal Thalduwa said the men were taken into custody at four locations during raids carried out since October 6, with 129 arrested in one location Saturday.

Thalduwa said that a large number of mobile phones and laptop computers were also seized.

"We suspect that they were operating online scams from these locations," Thalduwa told reporters in the capital, Colombo.

"Their victims include people in Sri Lanka as well as those overseas."

He said investigations were moving slowly due to language issues in questioning the suspects, but the authorities have sought help of officials from the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

Forensic experts were analyzing the electronic devices that were seized, he said.

In June, police arrested another 200 suspects, mainly Indians, who were also accused of operating online financial scams.

Thalduwa said the suspects had entered the island as tourists and, in most cases, were overstaying their visas.

Taiwan reported China's Liaoning aircraft carrier group sailing to the island's south. The sighting came hours after the Chinese military put out a video saying it was "prepared for battle."

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said Sunday it was "on alert" after a Chinese aircraft carrier was detected to the south of the island.

The incident comes three days after Taiwan's president angered Beijing during a speech to mark the self-ruled island's National Day.

China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and tensions between the two have spiked in recent years over the near-constant deployment of Chinese ships to waters near the island.

What did Taiwan say about the latest Chinese maneuver?

"China's Liaoning aircraft carrier group has entered waters near the Bashi Channel and is likely to proceed into the western Pacific," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The Bashi Channel connects the South China Sea and the Pacific and separates Taiwan from the Philippines.

"The Taiwanese military is employing joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems to closely monitor related activities and remains on alert, prepared to respond as necessary," the ministry added.

The maneuver came hours after China's military put out a propaganda video on social media entitled "Fully prepared and biding one's time before battle."

The footage showed Chinese fighter jets and warships operating together, mobile missile launchers being moved into place and amphibious assault vehicles.

Speech by Taiwanese president ruffles feathers in Beijing

During his National Day speech, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te vowed to "resist annexation" of the island, and insisted Beijing and Taipei were "not subordinate to each other."

Lai said China had no right to represent Taiwan, but that the island was willing to work with Beijing to combat challenges like climate change.

The speech struck both a firm and conciliatory tone but drew anger from Beijing, which labels Lai as a "separatist."

China warned after the speech that Lai's "provocations" would result in "disaster" for the people of Taiwan.

Lai and his government reject Beijing's sovereignty claims, but he has repeatedly offered talks with Beijing, which have been rebuffed.

Brief history of Taiwan

The dispute between China and Taiwan dates back to a civil war in which the nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek were defeated by Mao Zedong's communist fighters and fled to Taiwan in 1949.

While Taiwan has its own government, military and currency, it has never declared formal independence from mainland China.

China has not ruled out using force to retake Taiwan and Beijing has sought to erase Taipei from the international stage, blocking it from global forums and poaching its diplomatic allies.

You are probably correct about this. The only reason I even read anything from Austin Steinbart is that I had a friend who did believe him. She was beautiful, smart, and a little bit tricked by that man. She was shot dead recently.

Go outside at sunset tonight and see a comet! C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) has become visible in the early evening sky in northern locations to the unaided eye. To see the comet, look west through a sky with a low horizon. If the sky is clear and dark enough, you will not even need binoculars - the faint tail of the comet should be visible just above the horizon for about an hour. Pictured, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was captured two nights ago over the Lincoln Memorial monument in Washington, DC, USA. With each passing day at sunset, the comet and its changing tail should be higher and higher in the sky, although exactly how bright and how long its tails will be can only be guessed.

Key facts: Improper payments — money sent by the federal government to the wrong person, for the wrong reason or in the wrong amount — totaled over $800 billion from 2021 to 2023, adjusted for inflation.

That’s $450,000 every minute. In the roughly five seconds it takes to read this very sentence, the government will have wasted $37,500 on mistaken payments.

Medicaid and Medicare accounted for 43% of improper payments last year, but problems were found across the board. Dead people received $295 million, mostly from pension benefits the Office of Personnel Management sent to former federal workers who had passed away. Prisoners were paid $171 million.

The Internal Revenue Service spent $25 billion doling out fraudulent and mistaken tax credits, with some IRS programs reporting mistake rates above 30%.

The issue is not new, but it is getting progressively worse. Barack Obama wasted roughly 4% of his spending on improper payments in his second term. Donald Trump wasted roughly 5%, and Biden is approaching 6%.

Background: Even California Democrats have realized that the mistake rate is out of control. SpaceX and NASA Europa Clipper Mission

October 14th 12:06 p.m. ET

SpaceX is targeting Monday, October 14 for launch of NASA’s Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter’s icy moon Europa from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The instantaneous launch window opens at 12:06 p.m. ET. If needed, a backup opportunity is available on Tuesday, October 15 at 11:58 a.m. ET.

A live webcast of this mission will begin on NASA’s website around one hour prior to liftoff.

This is the sixth and final flight for the first stage side boosters supporting this mission, which previously launched USSF-44, USSF-67, USSF-52, Hughes JUPITER 3, and NASA’s Psyche mission exactly one year ago.

Europa Clipper is the largest spacecraft NASA has ever developed for a planetary mission with solar arrays spanning more than 100 feet (~30 meters) when deployed and weighing nearly 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms) at launch.

Powered by 24 engines, Europa Clipper will make nearly 50 flybys of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, surveying for conditions suitable to support life after scientists predicted that a salty ocean lies beneath Europa’s icy surface which has more water than Earth’s oceans combined.

It will take five years to reach Europa, with an anticipated arrival in 2030.
