Navalny was the highest-profile Russian critic of the country’s president, Vladimir Putin. Russian authorities say Navalny died after falling ill during a walk at the facility where he was held.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. grants sex abuse victims' request to pause BSA bankruptcy plan

Earlier this month, a group of sex abuse victims asked the justices to place the billion-dollar settlement on hold while they appeal, noting that the justices are considering a similar matter in a different dispute — the legality of third-party releases in the Purdue Pharma bankruptcy case.

The 144 victims asked the high court to prevent the Boy Scouts of America’s bankruptcy plan from being implemented in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, saying the plan would preclude their lawsuits against other parties. They point to the Supreme Court weighing whether bankruptcy plans can authorize third-party releases without consent in the case involving Purdue Pharma and the family behind the opioid OxyContin.

“Abuse Claimants strongly disagree with the district court’s conclusion that they will be fully compensated for their sexual abuse under the bankruptcy plan.” the victims’ lawyers said in the court filing submitted Feb. 9.

Lawyers for the Boy Scouts of America responded in their court filing, saying the court should not pause the deal because many parties have been relying on it — and that many sex abuse victims are awaiting to be compensated.

“The organization has acknowledged that thousands of young people were sexually abused in Scouting — the vast majority (80%) before 1988. [Boy Scouts of America] cannot understate how deeply it regrets that abuse. It has spent more than four years and expended most of its financial resources to prosecute the bankruptcy case and compensate Scouting-abuse survivors,” the filing read.

Donald Trump has been ordered to pay a $355 million fine and has been barred from doing business in New York State for three years. Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay essentially all of his cash reserves of $400 million, which fine if upheld would force Trump to sell some of his real estate holdings to raise cash to live on. Once interest is added on the total fine will rise to $450 million. This is all on top of an $83.3 million fine Trump must pay for allegedly defaming the writer E. Jean Carroll. The fines in total could deprive Trump of between 11% and 13% of his wealth. Trump's adult sons Donald Jr. and Eric have also been fined, and they are barred from doing business in New York State for two years. Ivanka or Melania Trump could legally run the Trump businesses for the next two years, but Judge Engoron appointed retired U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones to continue in her role as an "independent monitor" of the Trump business empire but expanded her authority to review financial disclosures before they are submitted to third parties. Judge Jones can hire an independent director of compliance, and she has the authority to compel Trump to sell some or even all of his businesses down the road. This is all punishment for Trump allegedly committing fraud by falsely in inflating and deflating the value of his real estate assets to pay lower state taxes and to receive more favorable loans from banks.

The New York State laws used to go after Trump have NEVER been used in this way, historically, and while Trump may owe some back state taxes, if Judge Engoron is right, not a single bank claimed that it had been defrauded by Trump in the loans it had made to him. This is truly a victimless crime.

Bankers took the stand at Trump's civil trial testifying that they would have gladly made loans to Donald Trump given his extraordinary success as a businessman. It must also be noted that the banks that made loans to Trump did not take his assessment of the net worth of his assets at face value but made their own independent assessments of the value of Trump's assets. This is apparently standard practice in the New York State real estate market where borrowers often overstate the value of their assets.

The bottom line is that a never before used New York State penalty has been twisted into a tool for a grossly excessive fine and more seriously the completely inappropriate appointment of Judge Jones as an "independent monitor" who can micromanage the Trump business, which she is not competent to do, and to even order the dissolution of the Trump Business in New York State. This outcome was pursued by Letitia James, a politically ambition Democrat, who is the Attorney General of New York State, and who hopes to win a future Democratic primary for Governor of or Senator from New York State.

Ms. James and Judge Engeron have essentially turned a vaguely worded New York State law into a modern day Bill of Attainder targeted at Donald Trump both for political gain and because they despise his political views and desperately want to call his truthfulness into question as he runs for President of the United States inn 2024. In doing this, the have violated Trump's First Amendment right to freedom of speech and of the press; his Fifth Amendment right not to be deprived of liberty or property without due process of law; his Fifth Amendment right not to have property taken away from him except for a pubic use with just compensation being paid; his Eighth Amendment right not to be made to pay an excessive fine; his Article IV, Section 2 right as a citizen of Florida to do make and enforce contracts in New York on the same terms as are other New Yorkers; and his Fourteenth Amendment right to be free to pursue an occupation without unnecessary and burdensome regulation.

The civil fraud judgment against Donald Trump is a travesty and an unjust political act rivaled only in American politics by the killing of former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton by Vice President Aaron Burr. If the New York State appellate courts do not reverse this judgment, the U.S. Supreme Court MUST grant cert on this case and reverse Judge Engeron's outrageous decisions. National, presidential politics will be permanently altered if a local State's legal system can be used in this way against candidates for President of the United States. This case raises a national issue of profound importance and if the New York State appellate courts do not address it, the U.S. Supreme Court MUST!

While mRNA and adenovirus vaccines are not live vaccines, they function similarly to gene therapy products.

All gene therapy products pose a risk of shedding, according to the FDA.

FDA Documents

In a 2015 document titled Design and Analysis of Shedding Studies for Virus or Bacteria-Based Gene Therapy and Oncolytic Products, the FDA defines shedding as “the release of [viral or bacterial gene therapy products] ... from the patient through one or all of the following ways: excreta (feces); secreta (urine, saliva, nasopharyngeal fluids etc.); or through the skin (pustules, sores, wounds).”

In the same document, the FDA also explains what gene therapy products are: “All products that mediate their effects by transcription and/or translation of transferred genetic material.”

The COVID-19 mRNA and adenovirus vaccines fall into this category. They mediate their effects by inducing the body to translate mRNA genetic information into spike proteins.

Some gene therapy products known to shed include an eye treatment branded as Luxturna. Luxturna uses an adenovirus carrier to deliver eye protein DNA to retina cells in patients.

The Luxturna adenovirus and its DNA have been found in patients’ tears, according to the product’s package insert.

Similarly, mRNA and adenovirus COVID-19 vaccines may cause vaccinated patients to release spike proteins or other vaccine components, Dr. Kory explained.

Just 18% have a positive view of the government’s handling of the border, with 1% claiming that the government is doing a "very good" job.

Notably, there has been an 11% surge in dissatisfaction among Democrats compared to a similar Pew survey conducted less than 8 months ago.

The border is likely to be a major issue in the 2024 presidential election as President Joe Biden runs for reelection.

Are NGOs another example of liberal goody two shoes good intentions going wrong, or are they an organized plot against white countries?

Whatever the answer, NGOs have certainly done enormous harm to white countries. After many years of negligence, Putin finally partially cracked down on Western-financed NGOs that were organizing disruptive events in Russia and creating the image of Putin as a dictator. Putin’s government required foreign-financed NGOs to register as foreign agents.

Documented reports from independent journalists have established that NGOs are spearheading the immigrant-invaders who are overrunning the United States. As I recently reported ( www.paulcraigroberts.org/2024/02/06/america-is-undergoing-genocide/ ), NGOs are actually recruiting “people of color” into the ranks of immigrant-invaders, providing them with transportation, money, and maps of the pathways to the US border that are supplied with accommodation, food, and health care. One of the most important NGOs underwriting the immigrant-invaders seems to be the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), of which the current director of the US Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, himself a Jew, was a board member until December 2020. According to an article on substack, HIAS has received $100,000,000 from the US government in the past three years. If this is true, then the Biden regime is underwriting the immigrant invasion with US taxpayers’ money.

The long-term, ongoing invasion of the EU and UK has benefited enormously from NGOs, especially from the moral support the NGOs provide for the invasion and for their work in conditioning Europeans to accept immigrant-invaders as the moral thing to do. You might remember the reports of the German women whose reward for welcoming the immigrant-invaders was to be raped by them. When the women complained of being raped, they were branded “racists.”

The story is the same in Sweden and Norway.

NGOs are largely a post-1990 phenomena. Recently there have been reports of the impact of foreign-funded NGOs in diversifying Ireland’s population and transforming its culture in Woke directions that elevate the legitimization of sexual perversion above Christian morality.

When Kamala Harris reached the historic milestone of becoming the first Black woman vice president, America also lost its lone Black woman Senator, making that moment bittersweet and highlighting the fact that we still have a long way to go when it comes to Black women's political leadership. That stark reality, and the duality of both progress and continued inequity, are presented in an illuminating new report,Reaching Higher: Black Women in American Politics 2021, fromHigher Heights Leadership Fund, an organization dedicated to building the collective political power of Black women, and theCenter for American Women and Politics (CAWP)at Rutgers University.

“We are pleased to partner with the Center for American Women and Politics for the sixth iteration of this report,” Glynda Carr, President and CEO of Higher Heights, told me. “It is a snapshot on the progress being made to elect Black women to political office and this year's research highlights that while Black women have made strides in representation in elected leadership, there is still a tremendous opportunity for growth.”

Black Women’s Political Successes

In addition to Kamala Harris being the first woman, the first Black person and the first South Asian person to win the vice presidency, Black women found success across other levels of office and played pivotal roles in voter mobilization and voter turnout. More than two-thirds of Black women turned out to vote in the 2020 presidential election—the third highest rate of any race-gender group.

Even though Black women are still largely underrepresented in American politics, the report spotlights promising recent strides for Black women in politics, including:

A record number of Black women ran for and won congressional offices in 2020.

Between 2020 and 2021, Black women’s state legislative representation increased, though not as much as it did after the 2018 election.

Black women reached a record high in state legislative representation in 2021.

Black women now hold the top executive post in 8 of the 100 most populous cities, matching their proportion of the U.S. population, which is 7.8%.

When Biden made his pick for a new Supreme Court justice, he publicly advertised that he would limit the field to only Black women. This was the same as his vice presidential pick. He stated in advance he would look for a Black female. However, Kamal Harris is only 25% Black. (50% Central Asian and 25% White).

This trend has continued. Federal judges can represent a president’s most lasting legacy after he leaves office since these people will be interpreting laws for decades. Biden is clearly choosing people to nominate for federal judgeships based on gender and skin color and not competency.

The Senate has confirmed one hundred of Biden’s nominees for judgeships. However, three of these people have been confirmed twice. Three women appointed to a federal court of appeals were later appointed and confirmed to a higher bench.

Of the 97 total individuals, a staggering 76% are female

Whites, who still represent a large majority of America, are only 37% of Biden’s appointees. Several of these people are Jewish, so White Christians of European ancestry are even less than this.

Blacks are wildly overrepresented at 34%. According to the US Bar Association, only 5% of American lawyers are Black.

From the 1940s to 2016, the percentage of female lawyers has risen from 3% to 38%. However, female lawyers are, on average, ten years younger than male lawyers. So they are less experienced. This is reflected in the average salaries of male and female lawyers.

25.5% of Biden’s picks are Black women, including his pick for the Supreme Court.

Note: Of the 12 Asian judges. Two are East Asian men, six are East Asian women, and four are Central Asian women.

From the moment that Democrat Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis abruptly hurled herself into the court hearing on Thursday, it was obvious what she was there to do. And it’s hard to even blame her because it’s the only option she has left.

Before she was even asked to appear — before it was even clear she would be required to testify in the hearing about her relationship with Nathan Wade that could zero out her criminal case against Donald Trump — Willis entered the scene in a painfully bright pink dress and told the court she was ready for her close up. Her eyebrows frozen in a defiant arch, left hand on hip, she tossed a document onto the desk of her legal team and told the judge, “I’m ready to go.”

She barreled into the witness box and demanded that a series of court filings be placed in front of her. When her own attorney requested a five-minute break so the documents could be located, Willis said, “I’ll sit here and wait for them,” lips pursed, eyebrows still plastered at the height of her forehead.

Willis endured questions for two hours from her legal team and that of Trump’s associates related to the conflict-of-interest charge against her office that she has improperly and unfairly prosecuted the former president and those whom she has accused of aiding him to defraud Georgia voters in the 2020 election. Willis hired a special prosecutor to join her team, a curious choice given that he’s a defense attorney, though she admits to having been involved with him romantically (thus using taxpayer money to benefit both him and, consequently, herself — allegedly).

And the entire two hours were hysterical. Willis, from the start, accused the defense team attorneys of lying and distorting her history with Wade, her now-former boyfriend who continues to oversee the case she’s bringing against Trump and his associates. She refused to answer yes-or-no questions with a single word, and when guided by the defense team or even the judge to remain within the parameters of the interrogation, she insisted she be allowed to characterize the motive and intent of the questions, which, again, she said were dishonest and malignant.

Multiple times, Willis greeted a follow-up question by asking, “Did you hear my answer?” At one point, she held up a stack of papers and screamed, “It is a lie!” before tossing them onto the witness box. Her attorneys then requested a break.

It wasn’t clear that Willis would be compelled to give testimony, but it’s no shock that it turned out this way when she volunteered.The whole point of her performance was to ratchet up news and online commentary about her abrasive conduct and her “Uh-uh, don’t got there” demeanor. It’s a naked attempt to get Trump supporters and right-wing media to please, please, oh-pretty-please call her “angry.” That way she can go on “The View,” plus chat with MSNBC’s Joy Reid to do what she’s already been doing and accuse her critics of being racists who simply can’t stand seeing a black woman of color in power.

It’s a desperate, albeit rational attempt to distract from what the rest of Thursday’s hearing demonstrated — that Willis and Wade likely lied to the court about the extent of their involvement, as Willis’ former close friend attested, and that Willis also probably lied about receiving improper gifts from Wade, whom she retained and paid with taxpayer money.

It’s all she has left. If it doesn’t work in the court, she will have lost nothing anyway. “The View” and Joy Reid will still call her a hero.

The Chinese Coast Guard escalated its presence around the Kinmen Islands near Fujian province on Monday in response to an incident on February 14 in which Taiwanese authorities reportedly chased away a Chinese “fishing” vessel, causing it to capsize and killing half the men on board.

The Kinmen Islands are located about 4 miles from the Chinese province of Fujian and close to 190 miles from Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. The Taiwanese government claims them as part of its territory, establishing “prohibited” and “restricted” water in which it bans Chinese vessels entirely or reserves the right to expel them, respectively.

The Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Office, the federal government agency responsible for relations with communist China, insisted following the incident on Wednesday that it was necessary because China has increased the intimidating presence of purported “fishing” ships and other vessels in waters that Taiwan claims as its own, including a growing number of ships that have no name and no formal registration, making it impossible for Taiwanese authorities to ensure they are not a threat.

Singapore-based Channel News Asia (CNA) reported on Monday that at least four Chinese Coast Guard ships appeared to be operating around the Kinmen Islands. The Coast Guard had announced the day before that it would increase patrols in the area in response to what it claimed to be Taiwanese belligerence.

J6 PIPE BOMB: The woman who discovered the pipe bomb at the RNC discovered it within minutes of the pipe bomb at the DNC being discovered.

The timing is curious because both bombs were planted the day before and yet they were discovered at the same time the next day - right as Ray Epps was urging the crowd to enter the Capitol.

Interestingly, we know the name of the woman who discovered the RNC pipebomb - Karlin Younger. When she found the bomb Younger was working for the Department of Commerce on its first responder communication network called FirstNet. I find it interesting that someone who works with first responders was the first person to report the existence of the pipe bomb.

Previously, Younger worked in China as a translator and then did counterterrorism work in London analyzing terror trends and tactics at a firm called Control Risks. I find it interesting that someone with counterterrorism experience just happened to find the pipe bomb.

Four months after she found the pipe bomb Younger began working with the Department of Defense (NSIN and DIA) to commercialize various DoD lab technologies. From the lab she spun out her own startup called FireFlyht that provided autonomous navigation capabilities to unmanned systems for warfighters.

Today Younger is working for a company that leverages AI track the sources of 'harmful narratives' allowing governments to censor and suppress misinformation.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Karlin Younger had ties to the CIA or NSA: China, London, Counterterrorism, Military-ties, Censorship, and Communication Systems.

Every few weeks since late fall, receipts for an $18 Big Mac meal from a Connecticut rest stop go viral online — with social media users lining up with their own staggering drive-thru receipts and searing comments, many of which communicate something along the lines of the title of a similarly-viral TikTok video, “McDonald’s has gotten too cocky.”

Inflation has been a hot-button issue since the early days of the pandemic, stoked both by supply chain disasters and international conflict, but now consumers are desperate for relief. In decades past, fast food has been a reliable source of hot and cheap meals, but even the price of value meal basics are on the rise. In some locations, a single McDonald’s hash brown costs over $3, while comedian Kevin Fredericks recently released a video bemoaning the seeming lack of a dollar menu. “We used to be a proper country,” he lamented. “$4.29 for a McChicken? $3.19 for just a cheeseburger not even a McDouble cheeseburger, just a cheeseburger? This ain’t no McValue! These are just McPrices, these are just regular McPrices.”

Fast food isn't cheap anymore. Here's why that's both a good and bad thing

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski has recently come out and said the company would be focusing on affordability in the next quarter. However, in the meantime, that $18 Big Mac meal has become both a symbol of consumer anxiety — as well as an unexpected economic flashpoint with which Democrats will have to contend in the upcoming election cycle.

It’s not just McDonald’s, of course. Fast food menu prices across the industry rose consistently throughout the pandemic. As reported by CNET, data from Pricelisto, a website that tracks menu prices for United States fast food chains, shows that menu prices were up about 13% from 2021 to 2022. Wendy’s and Chick-fil-A were both on the higher end of price increases, with a respective 35% and 15.6% increase over the previous year’s prices.

In 2023, the numbers only continued to climb; a report from the National Restaurant Association shows that menu prices in September rose by 6% over the same period in 2022.

It’s worth noting that while McDonald’s franchisees set their prices, there are a few factors underpinning the larger surge. The cost of commodity goods

— including beef cattle and grain, the basic ingredients of a burger — rose globally. Supply chain disruptions during the pandemic meant that certain drive-thru staples, like paper napkins, coffee cups, straws, and to-go containers, were low on the ground and even more expensive for chains to procure. Additionally, the price of minimum-wage labor, which has supported the fast-food industry for decades, is finally on the rise.

“Even though we’re pushing through pricing, the consumer is tolerating it well,” Kempczinski said in an October analyst call regarding the rising prices on the menu in the U.S., which increased by as much as 10% in 2023.

However, as CNN Business reports, the burger chain is now reporting “weaker-than-expected sales at its US stores,” and a key reason why seems to be that the chain is losing customers

— particularly customers making less than $45,000 a year, which has historically been a key demographic for the fast-food industry — due to pricing. “We actually saw that cohort decrease in the most recent quarter,” Kempczinski said in an earnings call on Feb. 5.

“You're seeing that eating at home is becoming more affordable,” he continued. “That I think is putting some pressure from a IEO [Informal Eating Out] standpoint on that low-income consumer.”

Data about customer attitudes reflects Kempczinski’s assertion. The State of Personal Finance in America survey

— which was taken in the second quarter of 2023 — reveals that as essentials have become more expensive, 31% of those who responded reported cutting back on non-essential activities like dining out.

Unease about the current state of the economy goes deeper than just tightening up expenses; per the survey, approximately approximately 49% of Americans report that financial concerns heavily impact their well-being, with 2 out of 5 Americans having experienced anxiety attacks due to money stress. Fifty-nine percent are specifically anxious about affording inflated prices.

The Republican Party has been quick to politicize rising fast-food prices, tying them to pushes for a higher minimum wage. For instance, as Vox reported, in June 2021, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC)

— the body responsible for electing a GOP House majority — released “an official statement blaming Joe Biden’s ‘socialist stimulus bill’ for the fact that Chipotle was raising its menu prices by 4 percent in order ‘to cover the cost of increased employee wages.’”

“Despite the inflation hangover keeping prices elevated, the economy, by almost any measure, should be one of the biggest feathers in President Joe Biden’s cap over the past three years,” she wrote. “But American voters keep telling pollsters that they aren’t feeling all the good news that economists are seeing in the data.”

Publications, including the New York Post and Washington Examiner, have linked the high cost of a McDonald’s meal to “Bidenflation”

(or as the Examiner put it, “McFlation: Big Mac's price soars in Biden's economy”). As such, it’s growing more and more possible that questions regarding Big Macs will be on the debate menu this year, but in the meantime, it looks like McDonald’s customers could have some relief.

In last week’s earnings call, CEO Chris Kempczinski indicated the company would be broadening the options on their D123 menu

Kathy Hochul’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) modified its Safety Net Assistance (SNA) program’s parameters in 2023, making migrants who have filled out asylum application forms eligible to receive even more taxpayer dollars. A memo quietly sent out to New York welfare office workers from the Hochul administration on May 12, 2023, carefully revised the standards needed to qualify for SNA, expanding them to include “non-citizens who are considered permanently residing under color of law (PRUCOL).”

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican has been trying for years to debunk the idea that its vaunted secret archives are all that secret: It has opened up the files of controversial World War II-era Pope Pius XII to scholars and changed the official name to remove the word “Secret” from its title.

But a certain aura of myth and mystery has persisted — until now.

The longtime prefect of what is now named the Vatican Apostolic Archive, Archbishop Sergio Pagano, is spilling the beans for the first time, revealing some of the secrets he has uncovered in the 45 years he has worked in one of the world’s most important, and unusual, repositories of documents.

In a new book-length interview titled “Secretum” to be published Tuesday, Pagano divulges some of the unknown, lesser-known and behind-the-scenes details of well-known sagas of the Holy See and its relations with the outside world over the past 12 centuries.

In conversations over the course of a year with Italian journalist Massimo Franco, Pagano delves into everything from Napoleon’s sacking of the archive in 1810 to the Galileo affair and the peculiar conclave — the assembly of cardinals to elect a pope — of 1922 that was financed by last-minute donations from U.S. Catholics.

“It’s the first time and it will also be the last because I’m about to leave,” Pagano, 75, said in an interview with The Associated Press in his archive office, ahead of his expected retirement later this year.

Pope Leo XIII first opened the archive to scholars in 1881, after it had been used exclusively to serve the pope and preserve documentation of the papacies, ecumenical councils and Vatican offices dating from the 8th century.

With 85 kilometers (53 miles) of shelving, much of it underground in a two-story, fireproof, reinforced concrete bunker, the archive also houses documentation from Vatican embassies around the globe as well as specific collections from aristocratic families and religious orders.

While often the source of Dan Brown-esque conspiracies, it functions much as any national or private archive: Researchers request permission to visit and then request specific documents to review in dedicated reading rooms.

Pagano keeps a close eye on them from a giant television screen perched to the side of his desk, which provides a live, closed-circuit feed to the reading rooms downstairs.

Most recently, scholars have been flocking to the archive to read through the documents of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII, the wartime pope who has been criticized for not having spoken out enough about the Holocaust.

Pope Francis ordered the documents of his pontificate opened ahead of schedule, in 2020, so scholars could finally have the full picture of the papacy.

The Vatican has long defended Pius, saying he used quiet diplomacy to save lives and didn’t speak out publicly about Nazi crimes because he feared retaliation, including against the Vatican itself.

Pagano is no apologist for Pius and stands out among Vatican hierarchs for his willingness to call out Pius’ silence. Specifically, Pagano says he cannot square Pius’ continued reluctance to publicly condemn Nazi atrocities even after the war ended.

“During the war we know that the pope made a choice: He could not and would not speak. He was convinced that an even worse massacre would have happened,” Pagano said. “After the war, I would have expected a word more, for all these people who went to the gas chambers.”

Pagano attributes Pius’ continued, post-war silence to his concerns about the creation of a Jewish state. The Vatican had a long tradition of supporting the Palestinian people and was concerned about the fate of Christian religious sites in the Holy Land if the territories were turned over to the newly created state of Israel.

Any word from Pius about the Holocaust even after the war “could have been read in political terms as a support for the foundation of a new state,” Pagano said.

In the book, Pagano doesn’t hold back about his disdain for the incomplete research behind Pius’ sainthood cause, which is now apparently on hold as scholars dissect the newly available documentation.

The two Jesuit researchers who compiled Pius’ sainthood dossier, the late Revs. Peter Gumpel and Paolo Molinari, relied only on the partial, 11-volume compilation of the papacy’s documents that was published in 1965, Pagano revealed.

“Neither Father Gumpel nor Father Molinari ever set foot in the Apostolic Archive,” he says in the book. He said he believed Pius’ sainthood cause should have waited until the full archive of the pontificate was cataloged and available, and scholars had time to draw conclusions.

“Written documents must weigh heavily on the life of a servant of God, you can’t ignore the archives,” Pagano told Franco, the journalist. “But the postulation by the Jesuits wanted to bypass it.”

Aside from the well-known stories of Vatican intrigue, the book also reveals some novelties, including the origins of the important financial relationship between the U.S. church and the Vatican that continues today and dates back to the 1922 conclave.

Pagano said that after Pope Benedict XV died, the camerlengo — the cardinal in charge of the papal treasury and accounts — went to his safe and discovered it was “literally empty. There wasn’t a paper, bank note or coin.” It turns out Benedict wasn’t terribly responsible fiscally, and left the Holy See somewhat in the red when he died on Jan. 22 of that year.

Papal coffers were always used to fund the conclave to elect a new pope, meaning the Holy See was in a cash crunch at a time when Europe was still reeling financially from World War I.

The book, for the first time, reproduces the encrypted telegrams in which the Vatican secretary of state asked his ambassador in Washington to urgently wire “what you have in the safe” so that the vote could take place.

According to the telegrams, the Vatican embassy sent what U.S. churches had collected from the American faithful, down to the cents: $210,400.09, allowing the vote that eventually elected Pope Pius XI.

Pagano suggests that Francis’ 2019 decision to remove the word “Secret” from the archive’s name and rename it the “Vatican Apostolic Archive” was perhaps another financial nod to the wealthy U.S. church — a rebranding to remove any negative connotations and thus encourage potential donations, primarily via “Treasures of History,” a new U.S.-based foundation that supports the archive.

At the end of the interview, Pagano proudly showed visitors one of the archive’s prized possessions, which he keeps in an otherwise nondescript wooden armoire near the entrance of his office. There, behind plate glass and illuminated with special lights, is the original 1530 letter from British nobles urging Pope Clement VII to grant King Henry VIII an annulment so he could marry Anne Boleyn.

As is well known, the pope refused and the king went ahead and got married, breaking with Rome.

“You can say that here we are at the birth of the Anglican Church,” Pagano says as he holds up a light-tipped pointer to show off the red wax seals of some of the signatories.

Pagano delights in revealing how the document survived: When Napoleon Bonaparte famously seized the Vatican archives in 1810 and carted them off to Paris, Pagano’s predecessor as chief archivist rolled up the 1530 letter and hid it inside a secret drawer in a chair in the archive antechamber.

“The French never found it,” Pagano says proudly, keenly aware that an archivist’s main job is to preserve the archive.

A Massachusetts charter school ended a girls’ varsity basketball game at halftime on February 8 after multiple players were injured by a trans-identified male on the opposing team.

The coach of the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell Girls’ Basketball Team made the decision to end the game against KIPP Academy "after watching a third player injured in the game," a press release from the school states.

Attorney for George Floyd's family recommends redefining crime to accommodate 'black culture' in MSNBC program

Benjamin Crump, an attorney who has at one time or another represented the families of George Floyd, Jacob Blake, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Malcolm X, and Ahmaud Arbery, has come up with a radical solution to the problem of crime in America: rather than fight crime, the powers that be ought to simply redefine it.

Crump made the case for redefining crime to accommodate "black culture" in a new race-centered program that debuted on MSNBC earlier this month entitled "Black Men in America: Road to 2024."

According to the network, the program highlights "the intersection of society, race and culture to provide a candid and intimate look at America through the eyes of an overlooked voting block [sic] — Black men."

In one scene, Crump tells MSNBC contributors Charles Coleman Jr., Trymaine Lee, and Al Sharpton during a distracted game of pool, "We can get rid of all the crime in America overnight, just like that. And people ask, 'How, attorney Crump?' Change the definition of crime."

"Of course," responded Charles Coleman.

"If you get to define what conduct is going to be made criminal, you can predict who the criminal's gonna be," added Crump.

The Daily Caller noted the stunning proposal came about after the pool-table panelists broached the subject of the criminal justice system under President Joe Biden.

Coleman, a former prosecutor, bemoaned the "circular argument" concerning authorities going "where the crime is."

"I tell people all the time, if you looking for something, you gonna find it," said Coleman. "So it becomes self-fulfilling in terms of, 'Well, we go where the crime is.' No, you're going and you're finding crime. And if you went somewhere else, guess what? You find it there too."

After Trymaine Lee aborted his attempt to make the case that black men are treated as criminals simply on account of their skin color, Crump suggested that American laws were created to specifically target black citizens.

"They made the laws to criminalize our culture, black culture," said Crump. "So when I think of Eric Garner, I would think of stuff like that."

"They come up with things to profile us for," continued the attorney, citing baggy pants and garbage-littered front lawns as supposed examples of racially-specific causes for interventions by the law.

Crump suggested further that profiling was involved in the case of George Floyd when he allegedly attempted to buy cigarettes with counterfeit money — an act that would have been unlawful for men of all races.

Hungary's Government Declines Offer to Meet US Senators Seeking Approval for Sweden's NATO Bid

A bipartisan delegation of U.S. senators made an official visit to Hungary's capital Sunday and called on the nationalist government to immediately approve Sweden's request to join NATO.

Hungary is the only one of NATO's 31 existing members not to have ratified Sweden’s bid. The Hungarian government faces mounting pressure to act after delaying the move for more than 18 months since admitting a new country to the military alliance requires unanimous approval.

The visiting senators announced they would submit a joint resolution to Congress condemning alleged democratic backsliding in Hungary and urging the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to lift its block on Sweden’s trans-Atlantic integration.

“With accession, Hungary and your prime minister will be doing a great service to freedom-loving nations worldwide,” Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, said during a news conference at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest.

The resolution, first reported early Sunday by The Associated Press, was authored by Tillis and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat. Joining them in the delegation to Budapest was Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut.

Shaheen said it was “disappointing” that no members of the Hungarian government had accepted invitations to meet the delegation but she was “hopeful and optimistic” Sweden’s accession would be submitted for ratification when Hungarian lawmakers reconvene on Feb. 26.

Murphy said the refusal of Orbán’s government to meet was “strange and concerning,” but that the onus was on the long-serving leader to push for a vote.

“We are wise enough about politics here to know that if Prime Minister Orbán wants this to happen, then the parliament can move forward,” he said.

Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat and chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, raised the prospect of imposing sanctions on Hungary for its conduct, and called Orbán “the least reliable member of NATO.”

In the resolution, obtained by the AP, the senators note “the important role Hungary can have in European and trans-Atlantic security,” but point out its failure to keep earlier promises not to be the last NATO ally to sign off on Sweden's membership.

Hungary, the resolution says, “has not joined all other NATO member states in approving the accession of Sweden to NATO, failing to fulfill a commitment not to be last to approve such accession and jeopardizing trans-Atlantic security at a key moment for peace and stability in Europe.”

Orbán, a staunch nationalist who has led Hungary since 2010, has said that he favors making Sweden part of NATO but that lawmakers in his party remained unconvinced because of “blatant lies” from Swedish politicians on the state of Hungary's democracy.

But in a state of the nation speech in Budapest on Saturday, Orbán indicated that Hungary’s legislature might soon relent.

“It’s good news that our dispute with Sweden is nearing a conclusion,” he said. “We are moving toward ratifying Sweden’s accession to NATO at the beginning of the spring session of Parliament.”

The state’s 20th Police Commissioner announced she was standing down from the role on Tuesday, confirming her last day will be March 1.

The decision to leave comes after facing increasing pressure to resign after a Gold Coast police officer was stood down this month.

The officer had been stood down from his duties after he claimed he helped catch armed offenders by authorising officers to ram a stolen car on the Gold Coast.

The decision had led many police officers to threaten to walk off the job in support of their colleague, who they claim was just trying to keep the community safe.

Queensland’s Police Union president Ian Leavers had slammed lashed the decision to stand the officer down, saying he had been punished for “doing his job”.

“He did what the community expected him to do and he has tremendous community support,” Mr Leavers said.

The threat of revolt comes as police officers have aired their frustrations about having to take on too many responsibilities outside of their dedicated roles within the police service.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Carroll said it had “been an honour and a privilege to not only serve as a police officer, but to lead an organisation of more than 17,000 amazing staff”.

Capital One To Acquire Discover Financial Services

Credit card issuer and Warren Buffet-backed consumer bank Capital One, will acquire the credit card lender Discover Financial Services, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

The reported move is expected to be finalized on Tuesday as Capital One has been working with advisers to negotiate a deal to buy Discover. Bloomberg reported on Monday that Capital One was considering making an offer for Discover.

“Discover has done a better job of bringing in a lot of deposits and [has] access to a lot of institutions to run the debit card network and provide service. So it gives them a lot of deposit gathering ability, which particularly in the current market is enormously important,” said David Schiff, West Monroe’s head of consumer retail and banking.

Discover has a market value of roughly $28 billion and The Wall Street Journal reported that an acquisition would be expected to value it at above the $28 billion. Meanwhile, Capital One’s market value is just over $52 billion.

Additionally, in January, Discover and Capital One reported declines in fourth-quarter profits of 62% and 43%, with bank declines resulting from bad loans as rising interest rates have caused consumers to default on credit card debt and mortgages at a higher rate.

Capital One uses Visa and Mastercard but plans to also offer some of its cards through the Discover Network, according to the report. The company also bought digital concierge service Velocity Black, which is a premium credit card and luxury market platform, in June of last year.

“It’s a good example of the risk we’re seeing in the market, where the competing interests from regulators for increased control and rigor balance against the competitive demands that are being made quite clearly, in terms of the overall market,” Schiff said.

The latest merger would be one of the biggest deals announced so far this year. Synopsys bought Ansys for $35 billion in January and Diamondback Energy’s $26 billion deal to buy privately held oil and gas producer Endeavor Energy was announced last week.

🚨BREAKING: Yemen's Houthis have just released footage showing the downing of a second U.S. MQ-9 Reaper Drone as the Red Sea Crisis escalates.

The $30 million American drone was shot down with a $10,000 missile.

Simultaneously, a British cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden met a similar fate—sunk and abandoned by its crew following a Houthi attack.

Expressing gratitude to "God Almighty," a Houthi spokesperson reported, “In Hodeidah, the Yemeni air defenses were able to shoot down an American aircraft (MQ-9) with a suitable missile.”

The Houthis previously shot down an MQ-9 Reaper in November off the coast of Yemen.

The U.S. and UK have carried out a number of joint strikes in Yemen, vowing to continue if the Houthis do not cease their attacks.
