New York Governor Kathy Hochul apologizes for remarks she made at a Jewish philanthropy event in New York City that went viral on social media and which suggested Israel had justification to destroy Gaza following the October 7 Hamas terror attack.

“If Canada someday ever attacked Buffalo, I’m sorry, my friends, there would be no Canada the next day,” Hochul said in a portion of her speech on Thursday at an event for the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of New York.

The claims about Russian space-based nuclear weapons unraveled to become a joke. Fortunately, the death of Western-sponsored dissident Alexei Navalny then occurred to enable Western media to go into a frenzy of anti-Russia headlines.

First up was the scaremongering story about Russia allegedly developing a space-based nuclear weapon. Initially, it was dramatically trailed as posing a serious national security threat to the United States. Despite the sensational reporting, the story quickly became a laughingstock. Even some U.S. lawmakers dismissed it as “bullshit” and a blatant attempt by the Biden White House and intelligence agencies to push Congress into passing a new mega military aid bill for Ukraine worth $61 billion.

We’ll get to the Navalny story in a moment. But let’s just first parse the orchestration of the alleged Russian space nukes.

The drama began on Wednesday when Mike Turner, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee (a dodgy source if ever there was one), made public appeals to President Joe Biden to declassify intelligence on “a serious threat to national security”. Turner is a Republican member of the House of Representatives but he is a close ally of the Democrat White House in terms of keenly supporting military aid to Ukraine. The latest bill passed the upper chamber of the U.S. Senate the day before, February 13, but it is unlikely to be approved by the House where many Republican lawmakers are staunchly opposed to it.

Accompanying the “concerns” of the intel committee chairman Turner, media outlets then vented anonymous US intelligence sources “revealing” that the national security threat was from Russian nuclear weapons allegedly under development for destroying American communication satellites in space. The White House then “confirmed” the intel the next day, February 15. It was a flagrant put-up job. But the Biden administration sought to tamp down any public panic by saying that the threat was not imminent and the alleged Russian satellite-killing weapon had not been deployed in orbit, nor would there be any danger to Earth. (So, what was all the fuss about?)

Ironically, derisive comments from incredulous U.S. lawmakers were also echoed by the Kremlin. The latter’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov made a similar assessment that the Biden administration was playing tricks to push through the military funding package for Ukraine.

That bill has been delayed since the end of last year. The Biden administration has been cajoling Congress for months to vote it through. After the Senate finally passed the bill this week, President Biden put pressure on the House, saying that “history is watching you”. The bill has been exalted as having existential importance in defeating “Russian aggression” in Ukraine. The U.S. media have claimed (preposterously) that if the military aid is not supplied then Ukraine’s defeat could result in American troops being deployed to prevent Russian rampaging across Europe.

The American public, as with the European public, has become increasingly skeptical about the relentless funneling of taxpayer funds and weapons to Ukraine. Many citizens in the West – a majority, according to polls – have become critical of fueling a bloody war for the dubious cause of “defending democracy” in a regime dominated by NeoNazis. At a time of deep social and economic hardship in the U.S. and Europe, the Western public is rightly disdainful of hundreds of billions of dollars and euros being wasted on death and destruction and also being siphoned off by a corrupt cabal in Kiev.

The $61 billion in military aid to Ukraine is just the latest tranche that Washington is seeking to throw at the black hole of its proxy war against Russia – a war that is really all about defeating Russia as a geopolitical obstacle to U.S. hegemony. Another driver is the massive profits that taxpayers are subsidizing the military-industrial complex at the rotten heart of Western capitalism.

"MUNICH, Feb 16 (Reuters) - The wife of Alexei Navalny led calls on Friday at a Western security gathering for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be held accountable for the jailed Kremlin opponent's death.

Hundreds of politicians, military officers and diplomats were in the German city of Munich for the three-day annual conference dubbed the "Davos of Defence".

The gathering was expected to be dominated by war in Israel and Ukraine as well as fears over U.S. commitment to defence if former President Donald Trump is re-elected.

But it was jolted by the Russian prison service's report that Navalny fell unconscious and died after a walk at an Arctic penal colony. Organizers broke the schedule to let Navalny's wife Yulia Navalnaya speak.

"I thought for a long time if I should come out here or immediately fly to my children," Navalnaya said, receiving a standing ovation as she came on stage.

"But then I thought what Alexei would do in my place. And I'm sure he would be here, he would be on this stage."

Navalnaya said she did not know whether to believe Russian authorities. "But if this is true, I want Putin, his entire entourage, Putin’s friends, his government to know that they will bear responsibility for what they did to our country, to my family, to my husband."

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris also told the conference that if confirmed, Navalny's death would be a further sign of Putin's brutality. "Whatever story they tell, let us be clear, Russia is responsible."

Navalnaya met with both Harris and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinkenon the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The event comes as worries in Europe grow about U.S. commitment to helping Ukraine fend off Putin's full-scale invasion and to defending its allies more broadly.

Trump, frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, has said he would not defend NATO allies who fail to spend enough on defence. And Trump-supporting Republicans in Congress are blocking aid for Ukraine's defence against Russia.

In a serendipitous moment, the sublime night sky view was captured from the resort island of Capri, in the Bay of Naples, on the evening of February 8. Looking across the bay, the camera faces northeast toward the lights of Naples and surrounding cities. Pointing toward the horizon, the meteor streak by chance ends above the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius. One of planet Earth's most famous volcanos, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 AD.

I have an Aerostat out my front window (New Mexico)

I just checked my security cameras from midnight thru dawn 2/17/2023. It was up all night, altitude was steady. I put a marker on-screen to track position. No wind last night. Also it was up at the same altitude last night at 17:55:00 as sun was setting, thru midnight. This is the normal position/altitude when weather is good, low wind. They didn't have the ground lights (perimeter fence area) on last night. Actually I haven't seen those on very often for many months.

Obvious reason why I don't post a pic.

I 've watched this one go up/down for years - if being lowered I know bad weather approaching. I even know someone who was one of the pilots.

Sooooooooooo, since it isn't on your image, could they have a way to cloak when they are up or down?

I'm tracking a lot of illegal activity in the area. This aerostat is very visible and can been seen from > 30 miles away,if you know where to look and depending on lighting. Illegals crossing the border also use the ground lights at the facility as a marker at night time.

We now know exactly how much material OSIRIS-REx captured from its target asteroid Bennu — and, it's a lot.

In addition to the 2.48 ounces (70.3 grams) of sample already collected from the outside of the canister, NASA has finally managed to fully open OSIRIS-REx's sample container to find another 1.81 ounces (51.2 grams) of asteroid Bennu within. In all, the probe collected more than twice what scientists had hoped for.

OSIRIS-REx completed its asteroid sample return mission when the probe parachuted a tightly-sealed container back to Earth on Sep. 24 before embarking on a secondary mission dubbed OSIRIS-APEX, named for its next space rock target, the asteroid Apophis.

With this container came the first pieces of an asteroid NASA has ever captured and returned for further study. The mission launched in 2016, and the safe recovery of the capsule last year was the ceremonious end to an epic seven-year journey through space. However, once NASA technicians got a hold of the sample container, they stumbled upon some complications — it was too difficult to open.

OSIRIS-REx's original mission goal was to collect up to 2.12 ounces (60 grams) of material, which was actually met with even just bits of Bennu spotted across the container's exterior. However, the team knew there had to be much more inside.

So, in order to access the entirety of the Bennu sample, NASA teams started designing a new tool to open the sealed container.

To talk specifics, the container was actually secured inside a larger enclosure, built for protection during the probe's arduous journey. As OSIRIS-REx collected its asteroid samples in space, a portion of the material wound up inside this protective enclosure but outside the designated sample container, gifting scientists some of the Bennu sample before the main canister was unlocked.

Far exceeding their expectations, mission operators managed to collect 2.48 ounces (70.3 grams) before ever opening the inaccessible part of the OSIRIS-REx return capsule. Still, scientists and space enthusiasts everywhere remained waiting to see what OSIRIS-REx's grand sample total would be. And now, the new tool having been derived, scientists have access to all of the probe's asteroid sample, and the results are in.

Combined with the samples already collected, OSIRIS-REx returned a total of 4.29 ounces (121.6 grams) of material from asteroid Bennu — that's more than double the mission's goal and the largest asteroid sample ever collected, according to a recent NASA release. For comparison, the Japanese Aerospace Agency's Hayabusa2 mission only brought back about 0.18 ounces (5 grams) of material from its asteroid target, Ryugu, in Dec. 2020.

Examination of the samples has already begun, and scientists are finding "a whole realm of material" previously inaccessible using samples collected from meteorites, according to Dante Lauretta, principal investigator for OSIRIS-REx. Bennu is believed to be a remnant of the early solar system, and scientists think studying these samples could help unravel some mysteries of early planetary development.

About a quarter of the Bennu sample will remain with researchers on the OSIRIS-REx research team. NASA also plans to preserve at least 70 percent of the sample for study by scientists worldwide, as well as for future generations of researchers.

Egypt is levelling land and building a wall near its border with Gaza ahead of a planned Israeli offensive on Rafah, satellite images analysed by the Associated Press have shown.

Egypt has not publicly acknowledged the construction but has repeatedly warned Israel not to forcibly expel the more than one million displaced Palestinians now in Rafah into its territory.

Israel's defence minister said Israel has "no intention" of pushing Palestinian civilians across the border into Egypt.

However, preparations on the Egyptian side of the border in the Sinai Peninsula suggested Cairo was preparing for such a mass ejection.

The scenario could threaten a 1979 peace deal with Israel that has been a linchpin for regional security.

The Egyptian government did not respond to requests for comment on Friday from the AP.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on February 11 warning Israel about the possible Rafah offensive and its "displacement of the Palestinian people".

The satellite images, taken by Maxar Technologies on February 15, showed ongoing construction on the wall, which sits along the Sheikh Zuweid-Rafah Road some 3.5 kilometres west of the border with Gaza.

The images showed cranes, trucks and what appeared to be precast concrete barriers being set up along the road.

Those satellite images corresponded to features seen in a video released by the London-based Sinai Foundation for Human Rights on February 12.

The group's video showed a crane lifting concrete walls into place along the road.

NASA is seeking applicants to participate in its next simulated one-year Mars surface mission to help inform the agency’s plans for human exploration of the Red Planet. The second of three planned ground-based missions called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) is scheduled to kick off in spring 2025.

Each CHAPEA mission involves a four-person volunteer crew living and working inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The habitat, called the Mars Dune Alpha, simulates the challenges of a mission on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. Crew tasks include simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercise, and crop growth.

NASA is looking for healthy, motivated U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are non-smokers, 30-55 years old, and proficient in English for effective communication between crewmates and mission control. Applicants should have a strong desire for unique, rewarding adventures and interest in contributing to NASA’s work to prepare for the first human journey to Mars.

The deadline for applicants is Tuesday, April 2.

Crew selection will follow additional standard NASA criteria for astronaut candidate applicants. A master’s degree in a STEM field such as engineering, mathematics, or biological, physical or computer science from an accredited institution with at least two years of professional STEM experience or a minimum of one thousand hours piloting an aircraft is required. Candidates who have completed two years of work toward a doctoral program in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, completed a medical degree, or a test pilot program will also be considered. With four years of professional experience, applicants who have completed military officer training or a bachelor of science degree in a STEM field may be considered.

Compensation for participating in the mission is available. More information will be provided during the candidate screening process.

As NASA works to establish a long-term presence for scientific discovery and exploration on the Moon through the Artemis campaign, CHAPEA missions provide important scientific data to validate systems and develop solutions for future missions to the Red Planet. With the first CHAPEA crew more than halfway through their yearlong mission, NASA is using research gained through the simulated missions to help inform crew health and performance support during Mars expeditions.

Under NASA’s Artemis campaign, the agency will establish the foundation for long-term scientific exploration at the Moon, land the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar surface, and prepare for human expeditions to Mars for the benefit of all.

NASA has officially bid adieu to its Spacecraft Fire Safety Experiment (Saffire), fittingly having the last one burn up in the Earth's atmosphere following six successful missions involving controlled fires in orbit.

The agency's sixth and final experiment dubbed Saffire-VI traveled to the International Space Station in August, safely tucked inside an uncrewed Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft.

Last month, the capsule burned up while reentering the atmosphere, putting an end to a series of experiments that have provided invaluable insights into how fire behaves in space and how to enhance the safety of future space exploration missions.

The first Saffire mission took place in 2016, with scientists lighting a sample of a cotton-fiberglass blend inside a roughly three-by-four-foot enclosure, dwarfing the previously largest fire experiment in space, which was roughly the size of an index card, per NASA.

The mission, as well as the five subsequent experiments, were designed to probe important questions when it comes to crew safety.

"How big a fire does it take for things to get bad for a crew?" said Saffire principal investigator David Urban in a NASA statement. "This kind of work is done for every other inhabited structure here on Earth — buildings, planes, trains, automobiles, mines, submarines, ships — but we hadn’t done this research for spacecraft until Saffire."

For Saffire-VI, scientists cranked up the concentration of oxygen and lowered the pressure compared to previous experiments.

In other words, NASA really let it rip for its grand finale.

Over 19 different runs, scientists ignited a roaring flame on a number of materials, including plexiglass, cotton, a flame-resistant fiber called Nomex, and other fabrics, specially designed to resist fire.

Thanks to cameras inside the container, scientists watched as the flames roared, gathering crucial data in the process.

"You’ve got a heat release rate and a rate of release of combustion products," said project manager Gary Ruff in the statement. "You can take those as model input and predict what will happen in a vehicle."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, fire in space habitats is really bad news. In 1997, the six crew members on board Russia's Mir space station were shocked to discover a fire that ignited in an oxygen-generating system. The flame burned bright for several minutes, filling the station with smoke.

Fortunately, crew members acted quickly enough and managed to extinguish the flames.

We've come a long way since then, in large part thanks to NASA's Saffire experiments.

In September, two fearless astronauts on board China's Tiangong space station even lit a candle with a match during a live broadcast, a symbolic vote of confidence in our ability to control fire and create safe environments in space.

The second time was the charm for Japan's new H3 rocket.

The H3 reached orbit and successfully deployed a satellite this evening (Feb. 16), rebounding from a failure on its debut flight last year and getting back on track to becoming Japan's workhorse rocket of the future.

"I was so moved!" a commentator said during a webcast of today's launch provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). "The story of H3 will begin from today." (The original comments were in Japanese; JAXA provided an English translation in real time.)

JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have been developing the H3 for the past decade. The expendable, medium-lift rocket will take the reins from the nation's venerable H-2A, which has been flying since 2001 and is set to retire later this year.

The two-stage H3 stands either 187 feet or 207 feet (57 or 63 meters) tall, depending on the choice of payload fairing. The first stage is powered by either two or three liquid hydrogen-liquid oxygen LE-9 engines, which were newly developed for the H3. The upper stage features a single LE-5B-3, an advanced variant of the upper-stage engine on Japan's H-1 and H-2 vehicles.

The H3 can be outfitted with two or four solid rocket boosters to increase its thrust. In its burliest configuration, the new rocket can haul more than 7.2 tons (6.5 metric tons) of payload to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), according to its JAXA spec sheet. The H-2A, by comparison, can deliver about 4.4 tons (4 metric tons) to GTO. The H3 will also be significantly cheaper to build and operate than its predecessor, according to JAXA officials.

The H3's debut was originally targeted for 2020, but the timeline slipped substantially, partly due to difficulties in the development of the LE-9. The new rocket finally launched for the first time on March 6, 2023, on a mission that aimed to send the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-3 (ALOS-3), also known as DAICHI-3, to orbit.

Things did not go well that day, however. The H3's second-stage engine failed to ignite due to an electrical issue, and the satellite was lost.

It took nearly a year for the H3 to get off the ground again. The rocket lifted off from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center today at 7:22 p.m. EST (0022 GMT and 9:22 a.m. Japan Standard Time on Feb. 17).

H3 carried two small Earth-observation satellites, called CE-SAT-IE and TIRSAT, on its mission today. The main payload, however, was a 5,900-pound (2,600 kilograms) mass simulator, which stood in for a big-ticket spacecraft.

"The primary purpose of this mission is to evaluate the performance of the H3 rocket and its payload deployment mechanism," EverydayAstronaut.com wrote in a mission description.

The early stages of the launch went entirely according to plan; the H3 notched all of its required milestones on time — most notably, considering what happened last March, the ignition of its upper-stage engine a little more than five minutes after liftoff.

The upper stage reached orbit, then deployed CE-SAT-IE about 17 minutes after liftoff — again, right on schedule. The success elicited applause and high-fives from team members in mission control.

TIRSAT and the payload simulator will be deployed later in the flight, but we'll have to wait to hear how those events went; JAXA ended the webcast shortly after CE-SAT-IE's separation. The agency will hold a press conference later to discuss the flight, commentators said during today's launch.

Their enthusiasm, and that of the folks in mission control, suggests that JAXA will regard today's mission as a success no matter what happens with those other two payloads. The H3 has successfully deployed a satellite, after all, so it has earned its wings.

India successfully launched a new generation meteorological satellite early Saturday.

The 51.7-meter-long, three-stage Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) lifted off at 7:05 a.m. Eastern Feb. 17 (1205 UTC; 5:35 p.m. local) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

The INSAT-3DS meteorological satellite separated from the launcher around 19 minutes later. The satellite entered geosynchronous transfer orbit and subsequent orbit-raising maneuvers will take the satellites to 74 degrees East in the geostationary belt, 35,786 kilometers above the equator.

“I’m very happy to announce the successful accomplishment of the mission GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS,” said S Somanath, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in remarks after the launch. “The spacecraft has been injected into a very good orbit.”

“Let me congratulate the teams who built the payloads, the satellite and also the launch vehicle for this acceleration this year,” S Somanath added.

Tomy Joseph, mission director, said that the GSLV rocket, dubbed “Naughty Boy” in reference to six of 15 of its previous launches ending in failure or partial failure, has now become “a very obedient and disciplined boy.”

INSAT-3DS is the sixth in the INSAT series and had a mass at liftoff of 2,274 kilograms. INSAT-3DS carries four payloads: a six-channel multispectral imager, a 19 channel sounder payload, Data Relay Transponder (DRT) and Satellite Aided Search & Rescue transponder (SAS&R). The mission is funded by India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The satellite is expected to operate until at least 2030.

Mission objectives encompass monitoring Earth’s surface and oceans across meteorological spectral channels, providing vertical atmospheric profiles of meteorological parameters, collecting and disseminating data from Data Collection Platforms (DCPs), and offering Satellite Aided Search and Rescue services, according to ISRO.

These goals aim to enhance understanding of environmental dynamics, improve weather forecasting, ensure efficient data usage, and support emergency response efforts through advanced satellite technology.

The launch of INSAT-3DS was India’s second of 2024, following the launch of the XPoSat X-ray astronomy satellite Jan. 1 (UTC).

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) announced earlier that month that the country is aiming to conduct 30 launches across a 15-month period. India’s busiest year for launch so far was eight launches conducted across 2023.

Among the key tasks of the year will be a series of test flights for its Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. ISRO launched an uncrewed capsule on a suborbital flight to test its launch abort system in October last year.

The agency will also launch the European Space Agency’s Proba 3 dual coronagraph and occulter technology demonstration spacecraft late in the year.

ISRO announced Feb. 16 that its Cartosat-2 high-resolution imaging satellite had reentered Earth’s atmosphere Feb. 14. ISRO said it had lowered the satellite’s orbit from 635 km to 380 km by early 2020 to underscore the agency’s commitment to sustainable space exploration.

Viasat announced it completed the first satellite broadband upgrade on board a Military Sealift Command ship, and expects to update 105 vessels over the next year. The work is part of a $578 million contract that Inmarsat won in 2022 before it was acquired by rival satellite operator Viasat.

The U.S. Navy’s sealift organization, responsible for providing ocean transportation to the Department of Defense, operates a fleet of approximately 125 civilian-crewed ships that replenish Navy vessels at sea, transporting military equipment and personnel, and strategically positioning cargo around the world.

Viasat is revamping the ships’ satellite network from Ku-band to the company’s Global Xpress Ka-band and the ELERA L-band systems.

Steve Gizinski, managing director of Viasat Government Services, said the company is providing a fully managed service to the Military Sealift Command. It relies on Ka band as the principal broadband connection, backed up by L band service in areas where Ka band signals might not be available.

Gizinski previously ran Inmarsat Government Services, which is now Viasat Government Services, based in Reston, Virginia.

The Military Sealift Command needs reliable coverage and high data rates for ships around the world, he said. “In places where perhaps in the past they did not have Ku-band coverage, they were forced to be on L-band. Now, no matter where they go, they have Ka-band access,” Gizinski told SpaceNews.

The upgraded broadband requires two terminals, a Ka-band that Viasat is acquiring from Cobham, and an L-band terminal built internally by Viasat.

The MSC contract, worth $578 million over 10 years, was awarded in 2022 to Inmarsat Government to upgrade broadband on ships, maintain and operate the command’s communications infrastructure, teleports and terrestrial services.

Lockheed Martin is experiencing a growth spurt in an unexpected corner of its business: small satellites. While traditionally known for its expertise in GPS and giant geostationary (GEO) satellites, the company has quietly built a backlog of 100 smallsats on order from Department of Defense and intelligence customers.

“This is probably a different picture than many of you may have in our minds” about what the company does, Johnathon Caldwell, head of Lockheed Martin’s military space business, told a military conference Feb. 14.

Speaking at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Warfare Conference in Aurora, Colorado, Caldwell said a greater focus on small satellites began with the company’s pursuit of Space Development Agency contracts. SDA is building a proliferated mesh network of satellites in low Earth orbit for the Defense Department, and unlike traditional cost-plus defense programs, the agency demands fixed-price bids from satellite manufacturers.

Lockheed Martin last year opened a new smallsat assembly facility near Denver, Colorado, with capacity to manufacture 180 spacecraft per year. Most of Lockheed’s smallsats are made with buses from Terran Orbital.

Caldwell said the smallsat business has to operate with the mentality of a startup. Taking advantage of the new production line, the company is funding its own space missions to demonstrate technologies that it believes the government will want to buy.

In 2022 it launched a satellite-servicing demonstration mission and most recently in December an antenna experiment that ended up in the wrong orbit.

The next experiment, called Pony Express 2, is scheduled to launch on SpaceX’s upcoming Transporter 10 smallsat rideshare. Two Terran Orbital Renegade-class cubesats will attempt to form a Ka-band mesh network in space.

“They will demonstrate a handful of interesting new technologies that we’ve been investing in through our venture fund,” said Caldwell.

These include open standards mesh networking and autonomous tasking of satellites. He said the company will allow military units to use the satellites in wargames and exercises.

Greece legalises same-sex marriage

Greece has become the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage.

Same-sex couples will now also be legally allowed to adopt children after Thursday's 176-76 vote in parliament.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the new law would "boldly abolish a serious inequality".

But it has divided the country, with fierce resistance led by the powerful Orthodox Church. Its supporters held a protest rally in Athens.

Many displayed banners, held crosses, read prayers and sang passages from the Bible in the capital's Syntagma Square.

The head of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop Ieronymos, said the measure would "corrupt the homeland's social cohesion".

The bill needed a simple majority to pass through the 300-member parliament.

Mr Mitsotakis had championed the bill but required the support of opposition parties to get it over the line, with dozens of MPs from his centre-right governing party opposed.

"People who have been invisible will finally be made visible around us, and with them, many children will finally find their rightful place," the prime minister told parliament during a debate ahead of the vote.

"The reform makes the lives of several of our fellow citizens better, without taking away anything from the lives of the many."

The vote has been welcomed by LGBTQ organisations in Greece.

"This is a historic moment," Stella Belia, the head of same-sex parents' group Rainbow Families, told Reuters news agency. "This is a day of joy."

Fifteen of the European Union's 27 members have already legalised same-sex marriage. It is permitted in 35 countries worldwide.

Greece has until now lagged behind some of its European neighbours, largely because of opposition from the Church.

It is the first country in south-eastern Europe to have marriage equality.

It is important to begin with the end in mind. Perhaps some people are unaware that internet services, meaning the actual experience of using theinternet for communication and commerce, are not the same in every nation. In fact, it is quite a different experience depending on where on the globe you are located. The differences are driven by internal controls, the intranet of the regional internet per se.

The internet in China is not the same as the internet in Europe, which is not the same as the internet in Australia, which is not the same as the internet in North America, which is not the same -at all- as the internet that now exists within Russia. Even in some continents, theinternet traffic flows are controlled at different levels within each nation. The “world wide web” is a format, but when you get down to the national level, things change.

This baseline helps to understand thatinternet freedom is defined by access to information and commerce.

To the extent the information or commerce is defined as against the interests of the authority structure, or potentially athreat to the national securityinterest of the government therein, the internetcontent is filtered, modified, censored, removed or just simply blocked from view. This isone layerin the information control system.

Another layer is the flow of commerce that floats atop the flow of information. This is where advertising, product sales, purchasing and general e-commerce takes place. This layer represents another option for control; therefore, this e-commerce layer should be considered running in parallel to the information, albeit perhaps indirectly attached.

When western government applied economic sanctions against Russia via financial restrictions writ large, the layer of internetcommerce control merged with the information and national security controlsystems of the internet.

Russian citizens were blocked from e-commerce access, specifically from western nations in alignment with the sanctions, and the mechanisms of online purchasing were restricted. However, the entire world did not participate in the sanctions, and there is a massive amount of e-commerce that takes place, even with the systems of western control financial blocks in place.

Additionally, there is alarge black-market systemfor commerce and financial transactions that started organically in the aftermath of the Russian sanctions. Crypto currency, as a financial transaction mechanism, was predictable; however, over time people became even more strategic and alternate transfer systems were created. You can purchaseadvertising in Russia, but are you really purchasing advertising– or are the purchasers really just transferring funds? Think about it.

I share that Russia example, because I do not want people to get too disheartened inwhat is going to happen here in the United States. There will always be a market for information, regardless of the control systems that are created to stop it. Additionally, there will always be smart rebellious people who think of ways to subvert the intents of the control mechanisms.Freedom may be diminishedfrom a raging fire to a small burning flame,but it will never be fully extinguished. WE just need to learn to adapt.

U.S. Will Build Five New Military Bases for Somali National Army, Costing Over $100 Million

The U.S. Embassy in Somalia has announced that the United States will build five new military bases for the Somalia National Army Danab Brigade.

In a statement, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee stated the Somalia National Army is “a centerpiece of our ongoing security cooperation with Somalia.”

Phee continued that the new bases “reflects our recognition of the success of our joint efforts to build a capable, professional, and accountable force.”

In total, the new bases will cost over $100 million.

Per ABC News:

The U.S. will build up to five military bases for the Somali army in a project that seeks to bolster the Somalian national army’s capabilities amid ongoing threats from an extremist group.

Somalia’s defense minister and the U.S. charge d’affaires signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

The agreement comes at a time when the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as ATMIS, is scaling back its presence in Somalia.

The new bases will be associated with the Somali military’s Danab Brigade, established in 2017 following an agreement between the U.S. and Somalia to recruit, train, equip and mentor 3,000 men and women from across Somalia to build a strong infantry capability within the Somali army. The brigade has been pivotal as a quick-reaction force in efforts to repel the extremist group al-Shabab.

The move by the United States comes around the same time many Army barracks across the United States are causing American soldiers to be sick due to black mold.

Spanning 80-acres, "Forward Operating Base Eagle" will house upwards of 1,800 Texas National Guard soldiers supporting Operation Lone Star, and will be expandable to house 2,300. Texas Maj. Gen. Thomas Suelzer said the camp will have 300 beds by mid-April, and will add another 300 beds every month after that.

“Before this effort here, they had been living in conditions that were atypical for military operations,” Abbott said at a press conference in Eagle Pass. “Because of the magnitude of what we're doing, because of the need to sustain and actually expand our efforts of what we're doing, it's essential that we build this base camp for the soldiers.” As it is, soldiers are housed all over the area, varyingly living in hotels, tents and even some private houses. Some bear long commutes.

"Illegal crossings are down and, coincidentally, razor-wire barrier is up," said Abbott. "We will continue to muster the efforts are needed to make sure that Texas does the job that the United States Congress has mandated. The United States Congress has mandated for barriers to be built on the border. Biden is not building those barriers."

Eagle Pass has been in the national spotlight in recent months, a flashpoint in the ongoing battle between Texas and the federal government over border security, including state authority to enforce immigration laws. Earlier this year, Texas seized control of a 47-acre park in the city, a park that has been a major avenue of illegal immigration. The Texans also began barring US Border Patrol agents and watercraft from the property, which they've used as a staging area for processing migrants.

The new base, located about 6 miles south of the park, will include a 700-seat dining facility, workout equipment, a recreation center and laundries, vehicle maintenance bays, weapons storage rooms and a helipad. Soldiers will have individual rooms.

In January, the US Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could proceed with removing razor wire installed by Texas at the Eagle Pass border. However, a defiant Gov. Abbott not only slammed the order and barred federal agents from accessing the razor wire, he also added even more.

EU "Suicide Pact" Threatens To Flood Continent With 75 Million More Migrants

The EU has passed a migration pact dubbed “the suicide of Europe” which could lead to the continent being flooded with as many as 75 million new migrants.

The European Parliament’s LIBE committee passed the act on Wednesday, which formalizes the distribution of migrants to member states and punishes those that refuse to take them.

Because cultural enrichment and diversity is “our greatest strength,” countries that try to maintain their national identity without being subsumed by migrants will be hit with severe financial penalties.

Marine Le Pen, the leader of National Rally’s parliamentary wing, previously said the pact would lead to “the suicide of Europe,” adding that it was a deal with the devil and represents an “organized plan of submersion of Europe and the nations which compose it.”

Member states will be forced to accept migrants or pay a massive financial penalty of €25,000 per migrant.

This makes little sense given that we’re constantly reminded of how mass migration is such an economic boon and is both inevitable and vital to maintaining GDP levels.

However, it makes total sense when you understand that such claims are completely fraudulent.

“The next question is how many they will force on us. Now they are deciding that. So they are creating rules that give Brussels the right to say how many migrants they will distribute,” said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán last year.

“So, several countries have indicated that they do not agree. We do not want to implement it. In the end, we are facing a very unpleasant turn of events here.”

Orbán questioned why, if accepting migrants was so financially profitable, are western European nations trying to offload them onto Hungary.

Róbert Gönczi, an analyst at Hungary’s Migration Research Institute, pointed out that migrants distributed to Hungary normally end up leaving for Sweden or Germany, where they receive far bigger welfare payments.

“The redistribution system could also create intra-EU flows from the countries where these migrants have been relocated to the countries where they actually want to leave, as typically the destination countries have not changed,” said Gönczi.

“However, it would now be necessary for other EU countries to welcome these migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, he added. The real problem is that the reinforcement of the EU’s external borders would be less or not at all, which is what is really needed.”

Biden Admin Removes Acting Deputy Chief Of The U.S. Border Patrol For ‘Misconduct’

The Biden administration removed its second-in-command of the U.S. Border Patrol this week for an alleged misconduct violation.

The administration confirmed the removal of Acting Deputy Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol Joel Martinez, a 31-year Border Patrol veteran, in a statement late on Thursday.

“We do not tolerate misconduct within our ranks,” the statement said. “When we discover any alleged or potential misconduct, we immediately refer it for investigation and cooperate fully with any criminal or administrative investigations. This is the case whether the alleged misconduct occurs on or off duty. Federal privacy laws prohibit discussion of individual cases.”

The Washington Post reported that Martinez, who has held multiple leadership positions within the U.S. Border Patrol, was not under arrest.

Martinez’s removal comes just days after U.S. Border Patrol Academy Chief Ryan Landrum was also relieved of his command and placed on administrative leave.

The Border Patrol gave an identical statement on Landrum.

The removal of the two Border Patrol officials comes as the Biden administration’s policies at the border have triggered what many have referred to as an “invasion” — millions of illegal aliens flooding into the U.S., overwhelming border states and cities across the country.

A new poll released by Pew Research Center this week found that only 18% of Americans believe that the federal government is doing a good job handling the border, a disastrous number for President Joe Biden heading into the November elections, while 80% of Americans believe that the government is doing a bad job.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens said in an interview earlier this month that the agency was stretched so thin due to the scale of the crisis that he has serious concerns about the types of illegal aliens that are able to evade capture and sneak into the U.S.

“And those are the numbers [hundreds of thousands of known gotaways] that really, for us, keeps us up at night because if you know that all you need to do is turn yourself in to the Border Patrol and go through the process, what possible reason would you have for wanting to evade capture and put yourself in danger to cross through the desert or be in a stash house or lock yourself in the back of a tractor trailer?” he said. “Could it be that those are the folks that probably have criminal intent, that have bad intent, that represent a possible threat to the people of this country? That’s the kind of thing that keeps us up at night.”

‘Suspicious Reversal:’ DOJ Backs Down from Massive Fraud Case Against Dem Megadonor Dish CEO, BlackRock

FCC insiders are raising concerns over the Justice Department’s sudden push to settle a multi-billion dollar fraud lawsuit against Democratic megadonor Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network and BlackRock, just before they were set to be deposed.

Last year, Elon Musk tweeted that Dish Network CEO and major political donor Charlie Ergen “is trying steal” wireless internet through his lobbying. He previously accused Ergen of engaging in “sneaky moves” at the FCC. Musk was criticizing Ergen’s failed lobbying and lawfare efforts to have the government punish SpaceX who was competing for spectrum.

A Senior FCC official told Breitbart News he is raising alarm bells over what he calls “a suspicious reversal by the Justice Department” to protect Ergen, as well as executives at Blackrock, to prevent them from testifying about allegedly fraudulent conduct in a wireless auction.

Under FCC regulations, the agency grants discounted “bidding credits” to small businesses called “designated entities” in wireless spectrum auctions. In 2015, Dish Networks — hardly a small business with a valuation over $25 billion at the time — with backing from BlackRock-financed Northstar Wireless and SNR Wireless who went on to win the auctions, describing themselves as “”very small businesses”. These credits were worth $3.3 billion dollars and pushed out legitimate smaller businesses out of the auction.

Northstar and SNR disclosed they received financing from Dish but claimed to act independently. After the FCC further reviewed the arrangements, then Chairman Ajit Pai determined Dish and its “shell bidders want this spectrum at a taxpayer-funded discount” and Dish had “de facto control” over the companies and denied the credits.

The FCC and Justice Department also endorsed a False Claims Act qui tam which VermonTel, a smaller company pushed out by Dish, filed in 2015. The suit has alleged the entire bidding process was fraudulent. Qui tam actions allow certain private parties to litigate fraud cases on behalf of the U.S. government.
